- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo! I'm Lucas, and as always, I'm here with Luna. Luna: Hey everyone! Ready to dive into another episode? I've been practicing my market phrases, Lucas. Lucas: I love that. And today we're going to add another ingredient to your market vocabulary. We've done chicken, ginger, turmeric, tofu... now, shallots. Luna: Oh, shallots! In Malay, that's 'bawang merah', right? I remember 'bawang' is onion. Lucas: Exactly! 'Bawang merah' literally means 'red onion'. Shallots are smaller and sweeter. So the first phrase: 'Saya mahu bawang merah.' Luna: Saya mahu bawang merah. Lucas: Perfect. 'Saya mahu' — I want. 'Bawang merah' — shallots. Now, the seller will probably ask how much you want. So we need: 'Berapa harga sekilo?' Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? How much per kilo? Lucas: Yes. And you might want to comment on the quality. 'Bawang merah ini manis' — these shallots are sweet. Luna: Bawang merah ini manis. That's a nice compliment. I can imagine saying that to the seller. Lucas: Then you specify the amount: 'Saya mahu setengah kilo.' Half a kilo. 'Setengah' is half. Luna: Saya mahu setengah kilo. Got it. Lucas: And if you want the seller to pick good ones for you: 'Boleh tolong pilihkan yang besar?' — Can you please choose the big ones? Luna: Ooh, that's useful. 'Pilih' is choose, right? Boleh tolong pilihkan yang besar? Lucas: You've got it. Let's put them all together in a little scene. Imagine you're at the market. Luna: Okay. Seller: 'Nak apa, dik?' I say: 'Saya mahu bawang merah.' Seller: 'Berapa kilo?' I say: 'Berapa harga sekilo?' Seller: 'Lima ringgit sekilo. Ini manis.' I say: 'Bawang merah ini manis. Saya mahu setengah kilo.' Then: 'Boleh tolong pilihkan yang besar?' Seller: 'Boleh. Tunggu sebentar.' Lucas: That was excellent, Luna! You used every phrase naturally. Luna: Thanks! It feels good to have a full conversation. You know, if someone finds these episodes helpful, they might want to support the show. Lucas: That's true. Repeat after me: Saya mahu bawang merah. Luna: Saya mahu bawang merah. Lucas: Berapa harga sekilo? Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: Bawang merah ini manis. Luna: Bawang merah ini manis. Lucas: Saya mahu setengah kilo. Luna: Saya mahu setengah kilo. Lucas: Boleh tolong pilihkan yang besar? Luna: Boleh tolong pilihkan yang besar? That's a mouthful, but I got it. Lucas: You did great. So next time you're at a market in Malaysia, try using these phrases. The sellers will appreciate it. Luna: And you'll get better shallots! Thanks, Lucas. See everyone next time!
