Ep. 221. Summers Family Tree · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:10
Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and all the nerds in between.
• 0:12
My name is Megan with vigilante vibes and usually I come to you
• 0:16
with a character breakdown, but today I want to do a family tree
• 0:19
breakdown. I want to talk about the Summers
• 0:21
family, easily the strongest family line in Marvel Comics.
• 0:25
So of course we have to talk about them.
• 0:27
Families are already pretty messy, and when it comes to the
• 0:30
X-Men, it's even messier. But even by mutant standards,
• 0:34
the Summers family is on another level.
• 0:37
We're talking clones, secret siblings, kids from three
• 0:40
different alternate realities, time travels, space empires,
• 0:44
that the whole thing, whole enchilada.
• 0:47
Scott Summers family tree doesn't just branch out, it
• 0:51
stretches across time, space, and half the multiverse.
• 0:55
And through it all, the summer's clan has reshaped galaxies,
• 0:59
rewritten futures, and changed mutant history more than once.
• 1:03
So let's breakdown Cyclops family tree, focusing on the
• 1:07
major players who've spent serious time in the main Marvel
• 1:11
Universe. Scott Summers and Jean Grey
• 1:13
first met as teenagers in Uncanny X-Men Number One by Stan
• 1:16
Lee and Jack Kirby as two of Professor X's original students.
• 1:21
They grew up together as Cyclops and Marvel Girl, and they fell
• 1:25
  in love. Their relationship survived,
• 1:28
Jean bonding with the cosmic Phoenix Force, her apparent
• 1:31
death like a bunch of deaths, Scott marrying her clone, Jean
• 1:35
dying again and again, and even Scott's long relationship with
• 1:40
Emma Frost before Jean's eventual return.
• 1:43
And I got to be honest with you guys, Emma Frost was his best
• 1:47
relationship. That's all I need you to know.
• 1:50
But that's OK. Scott and Jean officially
• 1:53
married and X-Men #30 but hanging over their lives for
• 1:57
decades have been Mr. Sinister, A twisted geneticist obsessed
• 2:01
with their DNA. He believed their child could
• 2:04
one day defeat Apocalypse. When Jean was believed dead,
• 2:08
Sinister created her clone, Madeline Pryor.
• 2:11
It's also should be mentioned that he was taking DNA from all
• 2:15
of the X-Men and he could never get to Jean.
• 2:19
He can never get her DNA. So he made Madeline Pryor to
• 2:24
make sure that powerful Gray summer genetic combo did not go
• 2:27
to waste. Madeline Pryor, Maddie the
• 2:29
baddie, the Goblin Queen, Scott fell for her, married her, and
• 2:33
they had a son named Nathan. All without knowing she was
• 2:37
Jean's clone, which is messy. And then Jean came back.
• 2:42
Scott left Madeline and baby Nathan to reunite with Jean, and
• 2:45
things spiraled very fast. After learning the truth about
• 2:49
her origins and being manipulated by demons and
• 2:51
sinister, Madeleine became the Goblin Queen and launched the
• 2:55
demonic crossover Inferno. More recently, she took control
• 2:59
of Limbo and eventually made peace, or at least an uneasy
• 3:03
truths, with Scott and Jean. Scott's younger brother, Alex
• 3:08
Summers Havoc debuted in Uncanny X-Men number 54 after the Shire
• 3:14
abducted their parents and caused the plane crash that
• 3:17
separated them. Scott and Alex grew apart when
• 3:20
they reunited on the X-Men. They clashed almost as often as
• 3:26
they work together, but also should point out that Sinister
• 3:29
had a hand in separating Alex and Cyclops too, to the point
• 3:35
where Sinister was so desperate for Scott to not have a great
• 3:41
life that he took out some potential adoptees that were
• 3:47
interested in Scott. So Sinister is like the thorn in
• 3:51
their side. From the beginning, Havoc has
• 3:54
led the X-Men, X Factor, and Avengers Unity division.
• 3:58
He's also spent plenty of time brainwashed into villainy, and
• 4:01
in one alternate reality, he was a major hero.
• 4:05
Romantically, he's had a brief fling with the Wasp and a long,
• 4:10
messy relationship with Polaris, who is Magneto's daughter and
• 4:14
who is one of my favorite people in the Marvel Universe.
• 4:19
And Madeline Pryor, which is weird.
• 4:23
Their father, Christopher Summers, started out as a pilot
• 4:26
before becoming the space pirate Corsair.
• 4:29
He and his wife Catherine were abducted by the Sheer Empire
• 4:32
when Scott and Alex were kids. After Sheer Emperor Deken killed
• 4:38
Catherine, Corsair escaped and joined the Star Jammers, a band
• 4:43
of space outlaws which has the funniest name of all time.
• 4:47
He debuted an Uncanny X-Men number one O 4.
• 4:51
At first, Corsair kept his identity a secret from his sons.
• 4:55
Eventually, he reunited with Scott and Alex, who both briefly
• 4:59
served on the Star Jammers. He's also in a long term
• 5:03
relationship with Hepzibah, his feline alien crewmate to the
• 5:09
state. The Star Jammers remain some of
• 5:11
X Men's closest cosmic allies. And then there's Gabriel
• 5:15
Summers, Vulcan, the brother Scott and Alex didn't even know
• 5:18
existed for years. Born in Shiar space, this Omega
• 5:22
level mutant ended up on Earth under the care of Meyer Mctagger
• 5:26
and Professor X. When the original X-Men were
• 5:29
captured in Krakoa, Vulcan seemingly died trying to rescue
• 5:33
them and Professor X erased Scott's memory of him.
• 5:36
Because Professor X is a villain and I will not hear any
• 5:39
  different. Except Vulcan survived.
• 5:43
He returned an X-Men deadly genesis #1 furious and unstable.
• 5:48
Understandably so, after battling the X-Men, he conquered
• 5:52
the Shiar Empire and sparked an interstellar war.
• 5:55
He was eventually defeated by Black Bolt, cast into a
• 6:00
  space-time rift called The Fault.
• 6:03
Later, he resurfaced on a Rocco and the mutant planet formerly
• 6:08
known as Mars. Rachel Summers is the daughter
• 6:12
of Scott and Jean from Earth 811, the dystopian Days of
• 6:16
Future Past timeline where Sentinels nearly wiped out
• 6:20
mutants. She debuted an Uncanny X-Men
• 6:23
#141 Using her immense telepathic powers, she sent
• 6:28
Kitty Pride's mind back in time to try to change history.
• 6:32
After encountering the Phoenix Force herself, Rachel gained a
• 6:36
portion of its cosmic powers and traveled to the main Marvel
• 6:40
Universe. She joined the X-Men and
• 6:42
Excalibur, built real relationships with Scott and
• 6:45
Jean, and split her destiny. Part of her became Mother Scani
• 6:49
in the far future to guide Cable, and the other part
• 6:52
remained with the X-Men. Nathan Christopher Summers, the
• 6:56
son of Scott and Madeline, was born in Uncanny X-Men number two
• 7:02
O 1 and as a baby he was infected by the Techno organic
• 7:06
virus and sent into the future ruled by Apocalypse.
• 7:11
Raised with help from mother Ascani and even time travelling
• 7:14
versions of Scott and Jean, Nathan became the warrior
• 7:18
Ascani's son as the time travelling Cable he debuted in
• 7:24
New Mutants number 87. Cable turned the New Mutants
• 7:27
into X Force and dedicated his life to preventing catastrophic
• 7:31
futures all while embracing this his summer roots.
• 7:37
After the Scarlet Witch D powered most mutants during the
• 7:40
House of M, Hope Summers became the first mutant born debuting
• 7:44
in X-Men number two O 5 during the Messiah Complex crossover.
• 7:48
Multiple factions haunted her like Mystique Mr. Sinister, but
• 7:54
Cable took her into the future and raised her across different
• 7:57
timelines. He trained her as a soldier
• 8:00
while protecting her from threats like Bishop.
• 8:04
When she returned, she helped reignite the mutant population
• 8:07
and later became one of the five who resurrected mutants on
• 8:10
Kirkoa. In the future where Cable grew
• 8:13
up, he and Aaliyah Genscott had a son named Tyler Dave Spring.
• 8:18
Tyler was brainwashed into serving Apocalypse and later
• 8:22
traveled to the present as an arms dealer Tolliver in Ex force
• 8:26
#5, renaming himself Genesis. Which is.
• 8:32
I feel like you have to have a really big ego to take that
• 8:33
name, but that's fine. He tried to claim Apocalypse's
• 8:37
legacy, but was taken out by Wolverine during a failed
• 8:40
attempt to bond him with adamantium.
• 8:43
When baby Nathan was sent to the future, he was cloned as a
• 8:46
  backup. That clone became Strife.
• 8:50
Raised by Apocalypse to be his heir, Strife grew to hate Cable.
• 8:55
He debuted alongside Cable in New Mutants 87 and later led the
• 8:59
Mutant Liberation Front, Unleashed the Legacy Virus,
• 9:04
battled Cable and the X-Men in events like Executioner Song and
• 9:09
Messiah War. Nate Gray X-Men, his name is
• 9:14
X-Men comes from the Age of Apocalypse timeline where
• 9:18
Professor X died early and Apocalypse conquered the world
• 9:22
created by Sinister using Scott and Gene's DNA.
• 9:25
He debuted in X-Men #1 With overwhelming telepathic power
• 9:30
that strained his body, Nate moved to the main Marvel
• 9:33
Universe, bonded with Cable like a brother, and maintained
• 9:36
complicated ties to Gene, Scott and Madeleine.
• 9:39
During Age of X-Men. He even created a mutant
• 9:43
paradise reality where before sending everyone home.
• 9:47
And finally, there's Adam X. The Xtreme introduced an X Force
• 9:52
annual #2 he's the half brother of the Summer siblings,
• 9:56
genetically engineered using DNA from the Shiar, Emperor Deken
• 10:00
and Catherine Summers as part of a royal breeding experience
• 10:03
experiment, which is gross. Raised as a farmer, Adam
• 10:08
developed the ability to ignite blood, which is gross.
• 10:13
After eventually learning the truth about his Shiar and
• 10:16
Summers heritage, his memories were erased and he drifted back
• 10:20
into the fringes of the X Men's world.
• 10:22
So yeah, the Summers family isn't just complicated, it's a
• 10:26
cosmic level soap opera filled with clones, demon Queens, time
• 10:31
traveling warriors, mutant messiahs, alien emperors, and
• 10:36
multiple apocalypses. But they are still one of the
• 10:39
most important families in mutant history.
• 10:42
And honestly, what I wouldn't give for a movie.
• 10:47
A Summers family movie. Not Summers as in the Jean Grey
• 10:51
side. I want Havoc, Cyclops, Vulcan,
• 10:55
Corsair. I want that whole dynamic in one
• 10:59
movie. I don't know how it's going to
• 11:01
work out. It's probably not, but that is
• 11:04
what I want. So that is the Summers family.
• 11:07
That is the Summers family tree. They are easily the strongest
• 11:11
family in the X-Men world. I would say so, unless I'm
• 11:17
forgetting someone, but I don't think I am.
• 11:19
So yeah, I hope you enjoyed this episode, I hope you will like
• 11:23
and subscribe, and I hope you have a marvelous day.
