Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Very very very very severely beaten, to the point that
- 0:04Speaker 1: a piece of her tooth was found in her stomach.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Oh God.
- 0:08Speaker 3: The Berserker mushrooms were named after the Vikings who would
- 0:13Speaker 3: take these specific mushrooms before they went into battle. And
- 0:16Speaker 3: that's where we get the work berserk, because they would
- 0:19Speaker 3: just go crazy. The first thing I did was I
- 0:21Speaker 3: collected all the guns. But there were many demons she
- 0:24Speaker 3: was possessed. There was candle wax found all over the
- 0:27Speaker 3: place on her body, in her hair that she seems
- 0:31Speaker 3: like police work. One oh one announcing the wrong victim.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Hi.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I'm Julie Golden and I'm Kim Kanner, and we.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Are the producers and hosts of the true crime podcast
- 0:52Speaker 2: American Hustlers, and today we are introducing to you a
- 0:55Speaker 2: news show that we are producing and hosting called.
- 0:59Speaker 1: American Hustlers Crime Gone Viral.
- 1:02Speaker 2: This show's about us unpeeling the layers about binge worthy
- 1:05Speaker 2: TV shows and movies that everybody is talking about at
- 1:08Speaker 2: the water cooler when there was a water cooler, but
- 1:11Speaker 2: now there is no water cooler, So we're here to
- 1:13Speaker 2: bring back water cooler culture.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And then this is the really cool part that you
- 1:18Speaker 2: will not see anywhere else out there in the patosphere.
- 1:22Speaker 2: We're going to bring in the showrunners, the creators, the directors,
- 1:25Speaker 2: the talent behind the show.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Correct. So we're here to tell stories and unpacks why
- 1:32Speaker 1: other people who have told stories have told those stories
- 1:35Speaker 1: and the way they've told the stories.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I like that.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Huh yeah, yeah, that was good?
- 1:39Speaker 3: Good?
- 1:39Speaker 2: All right? Did anyone write that down? Oh we're recording this.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Good So, Kim y'ah, you're up, man, I am. What
- 1:53Speaker 2: story are you bringing to the true crime binge worthy?
- 1:56Speaker 2: Everyone talking about it in the zeitgeist potosphere? What do
- 2:01Speaker 2: you bring in?
- 2:02Speaker 1: Brand new series came out on Paramount Plus called Sin
- 2:06Speaker 1: City Jigglow A murder in Las Vegas.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Oh my, murder again, murder again. I had to go
- 2:10Speaker 2: right for the murder, right for the murder.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 1: And there's a few reasons that this story is all
- 2:18Speaker 1: over La La Land at the moment. One of them
- 2:21Speaker 1: has to do with the billboards that are all over town.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Oh oh hello, sorry, No, don't be sorry. I haven't
- 2:31Speaker 2: seen anatomy like that maybe ever. I mean, so, okay,
- 2:37Speaker 2: So we've got six gorgeous shirtless men with white jeans
- 2:40Speaker 2: walking through a dusty desert. What's happening here? Who are
- 2:44Speaker 2: these men? Why do they look like they don't eat carbs?
- 2:49Speaker 1: Which is why a lot of people are talking about this,
- 2:51Speaker 1: because this is on buses, at bus stops, and on billboards.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Which bus are these guys on? Just so I can
- 2:57Speaker 2: fully get into this.
- 2:59Speaker 1: I don't know, the big blue bus in Santa Monica.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Well, I mean, are these gay men or straight men? Oh?
- 3:04Speaker 1: No, no, no, they're they're they're straight. Okay, all right, yeah,
- 3:07Speaker 1: they're straight. The reason this Paramount plus series exists is
- 3:11Speaker 1: because back in twenty ten, a series on Showtime called
- 3:17Speaker 1: Jigglos only just Jigglos was about about five jigglows who
- 3:24Speaker 1: were jigglos in Vegas. They covered their real life, their
- 3:27Speaker 1: jigglow life, their party life, any their family life, any
- 3:32Speaker 1: part of these guys' lives were covered on this documentary
- 3:35Speaker 1: that was on Showtime. The first guy, you won't have
- 3:39Speaker 1: a problem with this guy. The first guy tattooed.
- 3:42Speaker 2: All long hair. Yep, okay, yep.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Unfortunately murdered the girl who's peaking above them.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Oh that's the murderer.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah, his name is Ash Kubiak. Out of all of
- 3:55Speaker 1: these guys.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, he was the most.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Like then chill into like massage and seemed to be
- 4:05Speaker 1: very grounded.
- 4:06Speaker 2: And who's the woman on top?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Our victim is twenty nine year old her Lean Doly.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Her parents were Asian Indian immigrants. Uh huh they but
- 4:15Speaker 1: she was born here. She moved to Vegas on her
- 4:18Speaker 1: own and was looking into going back to school to
- 4:23Speaker 1: get her master's degree. And then how she met Ash
- 4:27Speaker 1: is a point of debate, for sure. Some people think
- 4:30Speaker 1: it was on Instagram. Some people think it was because
- 4:36Speaker 1: he was an escort. We're not really sure yet.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So talk about the death. What happened?
- 4:43Speaker 1: So Herlene had gone to Ash's house, they did some mushrooms. Okay,
- 4:50Speaker 1: they were chilling, and again, what happened after that, we
- 4:55Speaker 1: don't know. But here's what he said on the nine
- 4:58Speaker 1: to one one call. Okay, come exactly what happened.
- 5:02Speaker 5: We took mushrooms together last night, we set our prayers together,
- 5:07Speaker 5: we put on Avatar together. And I don't know if
- 5:10Speaker 5: you've ever done mushrooms before, but I started like I
- 5:13Speaker 5: was no longer like in this reality anymore. I was
- 5:16Speaker 5: like in trance, different reality. I lost my mind.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Is that from the documentary.
- 5:24Speaker 1: No, I put that dramatic swell music under there myself
- 5:28Speaker 1: this morning.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I even know if that was the Avatar score. It
- 5:31Speaker 2: was a lot of music.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah. So that's why that's why I was four minutes
- 5:35Speaker 1: late today, is because I was very busily scoring and I.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Would it's a little big, I would down a little bit,
- 5:41Speaker 2: yeah cubic, Yeah, it's a little on the news.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Wow.
- 5:46Speaker 2: So he claims he was just hallucinating and that's why
- 5:48Speaker 2: he killed her, like he know, he knew not what
- 5:50Speaker 2: he was doing.
- 5:51Speaker 1: He claims he blacked out, uh and woke up to
- 5:55Speaker 1: a to Herlene, who had passed by his side.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And what does that look like? What had he done
- 6:01Speaker 2: to her?
- 6:02Speaker 1: Horrible? Blunt force trauma and strangulation were the causes of
- 6:07Speaker 1: death and means of death.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Where was the blunt force trauma was on her face
- 6:13Speaker 2: or head?
- 6:14Speaker 1: Or yes? And yes, keep going. She was very very
- 6:18Speaker 1: very very severely beaten, to the point that a piece
- 6:22Speaker 1: of her tooth was found in her stomach.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Oh god, I know, it's awful.
- 6:27Speaker 1: It's so awful, Hama said. Came in, they did their
- 6:30Speaker 1: crime scene investigation, they did autopsy, obviously, they did toxicology
- 6:36Speaker 1: they you know, found the things in her system to
- 6:39Speaker 1: knew to know that at least some of his story
- 6:42Speaker 1: was true, whether he blacked out or not, only he knows.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Ash claims he pled guilty to spare her Lene's family
- 6:52Speaker 1: from a trial.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Oh, because he changed his tune.
- 6:56Speaker 1: He did. He changed his tune. He was like, I'm
- 6:57Speaker 1: going to turn myself in for this, blah blah blah.
- 6:59Speaker 1: The came arrested him through a moment in the thing.
- 7:02Speaker 1: As soon as he was behind bars, he was like,
- 7:04Speaker 1: just kidding, not guilty. So changes pleading not guilty, then
- 7:08Speaker 1: changed again to Okay, I am guilty. I will plead
- 7:12Speaker 1: guilty because I want to spare Herleane's family at trial.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And because he didn't flee, because he basically turned himself in,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and because he pled guilty his sentence for and also
- 7:27Speaker 1: it was involuntary manslaughter. It's not like he plotted, you know,
- 7:32Speaker 1: plotted this. It seems like it came out of a
- 7:35Speaker 1: rage of some sort. It was involuntary manslaughter in Nevada.
- 7:39Speaker 1: That's eight to twenty years.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Oh wow, yeah, eight.
- 7:44Speaker 1: To twenty years. So in well, what he's been in jail,
- 7:48Speaker 1: what five years now? Yeah, it's been in jail, so
- 7:50Speaker 1: in three years he's eligible for parole, which seems nuts
- 7:53Speaker 1: to me.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Oh my god, Kim again, why do you keep getting
- 7:56Speaker 2: us involved with the people that could be out or
- 7:59Speaker 2: that are still to actively Oh, we're fine, we're fine.
- 8:04Speaker 2: This is what we always fine. Yeah, we're fine, We're fine.
- 8:07Speaker 1: He has way bigger fish to fry than you and I.
- 8:09Speaker 2: That's literally what you said every time I was terrified
- 8:12Speaker 2: in American Hustlers. I just can't wait to talk to
- 8:15Speaker 2: Jay to find out kind of how he approached everything
- 8:18Speaker 2: the original show, how he approached the documentary. And I
- 8:22Speaker 2: have so many questions about this case and the people
- 8:24Speaker 2: in it that I hope he can answer.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and just to tell you a bit about Jay. So,
- 8:28Speaker 1: Jay Bloomfield is part of the Jay and Tony Show.
- 8:31Speaker 1: That's the name of their production company. They produced the
- 8:34Speaker 1: Showtime docu series back in the day, and they also
- 8:39Speaker 1: were interviewed for the Paramount Plus series. So they were
- 8:42Speaker 1: wind the scene, Yeah, behind the scenes on the Showtime
- 8:44Speaker 1: show and in front of the camera on the Paramount Plus.
- 8:47Speaker 1: All right, so we'll bring in Jay after the break.
- 8:50Speaker 1: How's that sound?
- 8:51Speaker 2: That sounds fabulous?
- 8:57Speaker 1: Jay Bloomfield. Hello, thank you for joining today anytime, one
- 9:02Speaker 1: half of the Jay and Tony Show.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Correct.
- 9:05Speaker 2: My first question, honestly, is about the original show. This
- 9:08Speaker 2: is based on what made you think doing a show
- 9:12Speaker 2: about male jigglows. I don't even know how to finish
- 9:16Speaker 2: that sentence. How did you get.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Involved with sell would air would go on to do
- 9:21Speaker 1: six seasons? Six seasons?
- 9:24Speaker 2: Personally curious about the subject matter, like, how did you
- 9:26Speaker 2: get involved with that original show?
- 9:28Speaker 3: It's a weird beginning to that show. I don't know
- 9:32Speaker 3: if you remember a guy named Richard Grico. Yeah, he was.
- 9:37Speaker 3: I think he was once like on the cover of
- 9:39Speaker 3: Time as like sexiest man of the Year in like
- 9:42Speaker 3: nineteen eighty eight or something. Richard Grigo comes to us
- 9:45Speaker 3: with a couple other guys and says, just out of
- 9:48Speaker 3: the blue, well, he had been in a scripted movie
- 9:50Speaker 3: about a jigglo. He is the sexiest man in show,
- 9:56Speaker 3: so kind of makes and then he said, you know what,
- 10:02Speaker 3: I met some of these guys and they're really cool.
- 10:06Speaker 3: And he sort of was pitching us a scripted show,
- 10:09Speaker 3: and we didn't know how to do a scripted show
- 10:11Speaker 3: because we were unscripted doc guys, and when we talked
- 10:14Speaker 3: to him, he basically said, Hey, I met some of
- 10:16Speaker 3: these guys in Vegas. They're really interesting and blah blah blah.
- 10:21Speaker 3: And then we're like, screw the scripted show, let's go
- 10:24Speaker 3: meet these guys in Vegas. This sounds like a reality show.
- 10:27Speaker 3: So showtime, we're like, what do you have? And we
- 10:29Speaker 3: hadn't done any research. We just had a meeting with
- 10:32Speaker 3: Griico and we're like, we got this great show. We've
- 10:35Speaker 3: about these jigglo guys.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And then wait, that was your answer when you said
- 10:39Speaker 1: what do you have next, even though you didn't have shit? Correct,
- 10:41Speaker 1: we had nothing, So you're spinning.
- 10:42Speaker 3: And so we went into that. We had one rehearsal
- 10:45Speaker 3: with Richard, who's an actor, and he's like, don't worry,
- 10:48Speaker 3: I got this. And he just stood up and told stories,
- 10:52Speaker 3: and then in his stories I was there, so he's like,
- 10:55Speaker 3: remember Jay, when we went into that strip club and
- 10:57Speaker 3: we met this guy, and I'm like yeah, and he
- 10:59Speaker 3: smoked in the pitch meeting, which I don't.
- 11:01Speaker 5: I don't.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I've never seen anyone do that. Like what this was,
- 11:06Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Well, it must have been like two thousand and nine,
- 11:08Speaker 1: two thousand.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Yeah, somewhere around there. And uh. And so he did
- 11:12Speaker 3: a great job of pitching something that didn't exist, and
- 11:15Speaker 3: they bought it in the room, which never happens anymore.
- 11:18Speaker 3: And then once they bought in the room, we had
- 11:20Speaker 3: to go meet the guys and find them and figure
- 11:23Speaker 3: out the show. So we did that, and we met
- 11:26Speaker 3: these guys, and there's your there's your story.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I have a question, what would you say to the
- 11:30Speaker 2: viewers who have not seen the original Jigglows What was
- 11:33Speaker 2: the balance of like sex versus characters.
- 11:37Speaker 3: What we found was showing the sex was boring after
- 11:41Speaker 3: like ten seconds, okay, and but showing the comedy of sex,
- 11:45Speaker 3: whether it's so. For instance, I remember on one of
- 11:48Speaker 3: the first shoots on Jigglos, the I was looking in
- 11:52Speaker 3: the monitor and the people were having sex, and she
- 11:56Speaker 3: was screaming, oh my god, oh my God, and he
- 11:59Speaker 3: sort of panned up through her face saying oh my God,
- 12:03Speaker 3: and then back to her the back of her arm,
- 12:06Speaker 3: and it's it was like a tattoo of Jesus. And
- 12:09Speaker 3: it was sort of perfectly timed shot, and I was like,
- 12:12Speaker 3: that's the show we got to be making, Like it
- 12:13Speaker 3: had nothing to do with nudity or porn. It was
- 12:18Speaker 3: the sort of juxtaposition of the kind of weirdness of
- 12:22Speaker 3: sex and then the other thing, which we always tried
- 12:25Speaker 3: to teach people, to teach our producers and editors, which
- 12:28Speaker 3: it's really hard to do because sex is so loud.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Sex is so all encompassing. When you're trying to shoot
- 12:34Speaker 3: it right, it's so like, holy crap, like people are
- 12:37Speaker 3: having they're naked, things are flying around, it smells weird.
- 12:40Speaker 3: So everyone who is drawn the energy in the room
- 12:42Speaker 3: is like, this is what we're watching. And the truth
- 12:45Speaker 3: is after two seconds of that, it's boring, and then
- 12:48Speaker 3: it goes on for like another half hour if you're lucky.
- 12:53Speaker 3: And so what we would have to do with I
- 12:55Speaker 3: mean these were well that was jigglos. They were medically enhanced.
- 13:02Speaker 3: But the but the point being then it would stop.
- 13:06Speaker 3: They'd have a cigarette put on their socks or whatever,
- 13:08Speaker 3: and our camera guys would have a cigarette put down
- 13:10Speaker 3: the camera and I'm like.
- 13:11Speaker 4: No, like take your break while they're fucking yes, because
- 13:15Speaker 4: the the interesting stuff is the awkward I can't find
- 13:19Speaker 4: my shoe like under the bed, or trying to light
- 13:23Speaker 4: the cigarette or whatever that awkward.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Post sex conversation is is the show. It took a
- 13:30Speaker 3: little while for us to realize, Like the show is
- 13:33Speaker 3: when the energy in the room changes.
- 13:35Speaker 2: It's kind of like the Shark and Jaws. Unless you
- 13:38Speaker 2: see it.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Correct, it's like the Shark and Jaws exactly like.
- 13:44Speaker 1: That Paramount Plus show. Yes, how did that come about?
- 13:49Speaker 3: Okay, so the murder happens. Yes, that's a start to
- 13:55Speaker 3: a true crime. It's pandemic time where I remember I'm
- 14:01Speaker 3: on set shooting with mister Jason Sadaikis on a show
- 14:06Speaker 3: called Tournament of Laughs, having a fun comedy time, and
- 14:10Speaker 3: a camera guy that worked on Jigglos comes up to
- 14:13Speaker 3: me and says, did you hear about this? And he
- 14:15Speaker 3: shows me the TMZ article and was like, whoa, what happened?
- 14:20Speaker 3: There's no way that could be ash like something that's do.
- 14:22Speaker 1: You remember what the article said, Like the headline said
- 14:25Speaker 1: attention like.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Ash from Jigglos kills woman or something something like that.
- 14:31Speaker 3: And so that's the first I heard of it, and
- 14:34Speaker 3: then I just sort of got depressed. And then more
- 14:37Speaker 3: and more people were like, Hey, do you hear about this?
- 14:39Speaker 3: And then I kind of ignored it. For a while.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Question, Yes, when you read about the murder, were you
- 14:45Speaker 2: shocked about Ash? Or were you like that? Tracks like,
- 14:47Speaker 2: were you how.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Completely shocked about Ash? Ash was the least likely of
- 14:52Speaker 3: all the Jigglos to do anything murderous. Why because, Okay,
- 14:59Speaker 3: his per personality, which we enhanced because we're TV producers,
- 15:03Speaker 3: But his personality was he's chill. He's from Japan, he
- 15:08Speaker 3: grew up in a zen garden or something. He does
- 15:11Speaker 3: massage like, he's mister like wellness guy. Like that was
- 15:16Speaker 3: his stick and it was kind of who he was. Now,
- 15:19Speaker 3: could he get angry, Yeah, everyone can, but I'm just saying, like,
- 15:22Speaker 3: of all of those guys, he was pretty chill.
- 15:24Speaker 1: So wait, was it his stick or was it who
- 15:27Speaker 1: he was?
- 15:27Speaker 5: Like?
- 15:27Speaker 1: Was he like a grounded dude? From your personalitive?
- 15:31Speaker 3: It felt like he was. I mean, of all the Jigglows,
- 15:34Speaker 3: he was probably the most grounded, which is not the
- 15:36Speaker 3: bar was pretty low for grounding for those guys. But
- 15:40Speaker 3: he was pretty chill. Yes, what we do as TV
- 15:44Speaker 3: producers is let's figure out who this guy is and
- 15:48Speaker 3: then turn it up to eleven. So we figured out
- 15:50Speaker 3: who he was and turned him up to eleven. In
- 15:52Speaker 3: the zen world. So it's And what I find is,
- 15:56Speaker 3: you do a couple of seasons of a show and
- 15:58Speaker 3: the person starts to become who you're making them anyway,
- 16:03Speaker 3: They start to go, oh, I'm the Zen guy and
- 16:05Speaker 3: then he starts giving more massages and talking more about meditation.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Is that real? Or is that because he's on the show? Like,
- 16:12Speaker 3: very hard hard to understand. We created something. Now, I
- 16:18Speaker 3: don't think that we creating that led directly eight point
- 16:23Speaker 3: A to point B to a murder, but it makes
- 16:25Speaker 3: you think would a life exist still if we hadn't
- 16:31Speaker 3: done that show? And the answer is probably yes, And
- 16:34Speaker 3: that's a I can't just avoid thinking about that.
- 16:38Speaker 1: So yeah, speaking of the life that was lost, what
- 16:42Speaker 1: the tell me about the victim? Herleane Duly. She's twenty
- 16:46Speaker 1: nine years old.
- 16:47Speaker 3: The hard part is the family, with good reason, did
- 16:53Speaker 3: not want to have anything to do with us, and
- 16:56Speaker 3: we reached out several times over the years, talked to
- 17:00Speaker 3: some of her friends, and we really tried to include
- 17:04Speaker 3: her story as much as possible, but it was hard
- 17:08Speaker 3: because the family basically wouldn't take our calls.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Can you talk to us a little bit more about
- 17:14Speaker 2: the birthing of the idea for the documentary.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Yea, So the same camera guy who told me about
- 17:21Speaker 3: this started calling me and saying, hey, he lives in Vega.
- 17:25Speaker 3: The camera guy lived in Vegas. Hey, Ash's mom has
- 17:29Speaker 3: been talking to me and she thinks there's things about
- 17:32Speaker 3: the case that aren't coming through and would you mind
- 17:36Speaker 3: talking to her? And I was like fine, and I
- 17:38Speaker 3: talked to her and sort of fell in love with her.
- 17:41Speaker 3: She was just this sweet, honest Indian woman who was
- 17:46Speaker 3: living in She moved to Vegas to be closer to
- 17:49Speaker 3: her son after the crime and go visit him, and
- 17:52Speaker 3: we just we got along and she was telling me
- 17:55Speaker 3: things about the case, and she was she wanted to
- 17:57Speaker 3: tell more of the story and tell people that her
- 18:00Speaker 3: son wasn't a monster. And so we sort of built
- 18:03Speaker 3: a relationship over a year and then I was like, Okay,
- 18:09Speaker 3: this kind of makes sense. Now let's let's try to
- 18:12Speaker 3: let's try to make something of this. And so it
- 18:15Speaker 3: was really through his mom that that I decided to
- 18:19Speaker 3: really try to turn it into something. I think it
- 18:22Speaker 3: came out really well. I think it was a good
- 18:26Speaker 3: honest representation what happened. I've heard from Ash's family after
- 18:31Speaker 3: and they're not happy with it, and that makes me
- 18:35Speaker 3: feel kind of terrible. But it wasn't a surprise because
- 18:39Speaker 3: I think, look, it's hard when when a trauma happens
- 18:44Speaker 3: to somebody in your family. And I don't know if
- 18:47Speaker 3: they believe he was fully innocent or it just didn't
- 18:50Speaker 3: happen the way the police said. I'm not sure, because
- 18:52Speaker 3: they would never tell me exactly what they thought. I
- 18:55Speaker 3: think they maybe delusionally thought we're going to open up
- 19:00Speaker 3: the case and find some new evidence, and I don't
- 19:03Speaker 3: know that. There were some things that we found that
- 19:05Speaker 3: didn't make sense, and the police work was terrible, and
- 19:07Speaker 3: there was an extra shoe print, and there was all
- 19:10Speaker 3: these things that led me to think, huh, maybe something
- 19:13Speaker 3: different happened than this, but not enough to I don't
- 19:18Speaker 3: think anyone was ever going to overturn the verdict.
- 19:22Speaker 1: What was uncovered in pre pro that surprised you the
- 19:26Speaker 1: most about the case.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I think the faulty police work was mind blowing. And
- 19:32Speaker 3: I'm almost afraid to say this because I still like
- 19:35Speaker 3: going to Vegas, and the police there are not going
- 19:38Speaker 3: to They already hated us because we were doing a
- 19:41Speaker 3: hit show about illegal escorts in their town. So I
- 19:46Speaker 3: know the police were not happy with the show, and
- 19:49Speaker 3: I think that may have been part of the reason
- 19:51Speaker 3: why they were just so ready to say this guy's guilty.
- 19:56Speaker 3: They got the victim wrong. There was shoeprints in the
- 19:59Speaker 3: blood that were not anybody who was there, The forensics
- 20:04Speaker 3: was kind of faulty. There's stuff about the coroner's report
- 20:07Speaker 3: that was just off. So I can't believe just how
- 20:13Speaker 3: lame the police were. And I mean, even if they
- 20:17Speaker 3: assumed that this was the guy who did it, like
- 20:20Speaker 3: do your job, kids like it, it seemed it just
- 20:24Speaker 3: seemed like, oh, this is the guy.
- 20:26Speaker 1: And what was the most glaring thing that you feel
- 20:28Speaker 1: the police screwed up?
- 20:30Speaker 3: Well, I think announcing the wrong victim is pretty glaring,
- 20:34Speaker 3: and that too. Sure. Look the for the first twenty
- 20:40Speaker 3: four to forty eight hours, I don't remember the exact timing,
- 20:42Speaker 3: they announced that the victim was this woman named Tia,
- 20:47Speaker 3: who was Ash's ex girlfriend that he lived with, that
- 20:50Speaker 3: he lived with in that con where the dead person
- 20:53Speaker 3: was correct, and they and she looks nothing like the
- 20:58Speaker 3: real victim, just call her hair, different body type, And
- 21:03Speaker 3: for twenty four hours everyone assumed it was her. They
- 21:05Speaker 3: announced it on the news. They did a press conference.
- 21:07Speaker 1: They held a press conference within I think, I want
- 21:10Speaker 1: to say, four hours after they were called to the scene,
- 21:13Speaker 1: which is unheard of. Like that's pretty you don't know
- 21:16Speaker 1: much at four hours after the scene, including the victim's name.
- 21:20Speaker 1: But I feel I don't know this, This is just
- 21:23Speaker 1: me speculating. I feel that they did that to tamper
- 21:27Speaker 1: this down so that it didn't blow out into this
- 21:30Speaker 1: like the TMZ article, you know, and possible, yeah, I
- 21:34Speaker 1: don't know, yeah, but like fishing, No.
- 21:36Speaker 3: It's possible. They were worried about it be becoming a
- 21:39Speaker 3: bigger story, But naming the wrong victim is still not
- 21:44Speaker 3: that's that's she's not excuse and.
- 21:46Speaker 1: She did so her His girlfriend's name was Tia. Tia
- 21:50Speaker 1: did show up to the scene within Again I don't
- 21:54Speaker 1: know the exact but that day, like after the press conference,
- 21:58Speaker 1: she showed up, so they very quickly knew it wasn't her,
- 22:01Speaker 1: but the press conference had already happened.
- 22:04Speaker 3: That she seems like police work one oh one. I mean,
- 22:08Speaker 3: announcing the wrong victim, like like there's enough problem, there's
- 22:12Speaker 3: enough pain going around. That's that that just seems horrible.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Am I picking up on the You're not saying you
- 22:18Speaker 2: think Ash is innocent, but you feel like perhaps it's
- 22:21Speaker 2: there's some unanswered questions.
- 22:24Speaker 3: I think there are a lot of questions whether he's
- 22:28Speaker 3: fully innocent. I think it's possible some something else happened.
- 22:32Speaker 3: I think it's also possible that she was attacking him
- 22:36Speaker 3: and it was self defense, which sounds kind of hilarious
- 22:39Speaker 3: because he's a big guy. But they were both on
- 22:42Speaker 3: a lot of drugs. He claims she was possessed and
- 22:44Speaker 3: she started attacking him, and there was candles and he
- 22:47Speaker 3: was and there is some evidence that that there that
- 22:51Speaker 3: she was being violent toward him. But I think in
- 22:55Speaker 3: their mental state, it's really hard to tell what really happened.
- 22:59Speaker 1: And the amount of injuries on his body versus her
- 23:04Speaker 1: body are incomparable.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Yes, well one of them lift well.
- 23:11Speaker 1: But even even even if she lived, even if she
- 23:14Speaker 1: were still breathing, like right, just the quantity of.
- 23:18Speaker 3: It's it's pretty pretty dark.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Steroids I know came into play.
- 23:23Speaker 3: He was, Yeah, look, they both were taking a lot
- 23:26Speaker 3: of drugs that night. Definitely, these these mushrooms that sort
- 23:30Speaker 3: of are known to make you slightly violent.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Oh wait, really, can we hear more about this, because
- 23:35Speaker 2: when I think of mushrooms, I think of like University
- 23:37Speaker 2: Wisconsin medicine and just eleven exactly.
- 23:39Speaker 3: And there's a lot of controversy because most of the
- 23:43Speaker 3: time mushrooms are very peaceful. There's some controversy because the
- 23:48Speaker 3: type of mushrooms that they were taking that night were
- 23:52Speaker 3: called berserker mushrooms, and Ash had never taken them before.
- 23:56Speaker 3: And berserker mushrooms were named after the vice kings who
- 24:01Speaker 3: would take these specific mushrooms before they went into battle,
- 24:04Speaker 3: and that's where we get the word berserk because they
- 24:07Speaker 3: would just go crazy. So these were new kind of
- 24:10Speaker 3: mushrooms that he hadn't take, I mean, not new in general,
- 24:13Speaker 3: but new for him, and they had taken these mushrooms.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Now I believe they were also taking other drugs that night,
- 24:20Speaker 3: and I believe he had a history of using steroids.
- 24:23Speaker 3: There's some reporting that says when you use steroids and
- 24:27Speaker 3: mushrooms for a long period of time, it can sometimes
- 24:31Speaker 3: make you violent. So there's a lot of questions about
- 24:35Speaker 3: the drugs, but there's also questions about those berserker mushrooms
- 24:39Speaker 3: were left on the site. Okay, so when meaning the
- 24:45Speaker 3: police didn't find they were right there. And Whitney, who
- 24:50Speaker 3: we could talk about, who was Ash's friend, went to
- 24:53Speaker 3: try to see what she could find and she just
- 24:55Speaker 3: found evidence that the cops should have taken and scene.
- 25:00Speaker 3: So were they just put there? Like? It was weird.
- 25:04Speaker 3: There's a lot of weirdness. When we started doing the research,
- 25:08Speaker 3: I went to Vegas and started talking to some of
- 25:09Speaker 3: the other jigglows and I sat down with Bradley, who
- 25:15Speaker 3: you see in the Paramount Plus doc and yeah, and
- 25:19Speaker 3: he well, it's interesting because he called me up at
- 25:23Speaker 3: first and said I have some things to tell you
- 25:25Speaker 3: that nobody knows. I'm like, great, what do you got?
- 25:28Speaker 3: And He's like, I have to tell you in person,
- 25:31Speaker 3: And I was like, guess I gotta go to Vegas.
- 25:33Speaker 3: So I go to Vegas. I have a drink with
- 25:36Speaker 3: him and he starts telling me some crazy stuff about
- 25:40Speaker 3: the night. He starts telling me that when he got there,
- 25:43Speaker 3: Ash was talking about the next morning, right, well, interesting
- 25:48Speaker 3: sort of the next morning or late that night, depending
- 25:50Speaker 3: on how he Bradley got there before the police, which
- 25:54Speaker 3: the police had no way, yes.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Which I was like, the did you just invite the
- 25:59Speaker 1: whole cast?
- 26:00Speaker 3: He invited the whole cast. He either did a murder
- 26:04Speaker 3: or somebody got murdered.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Jesus.
- 26:05Speaker 3: His first call is to the other Jigglows, which makes
- 26:09Speaker 3: me feel warm and cuddly, because like, we we made
- 26:12Speaker 3: these guys friends. They're the ryder dies. They call each
- 26:15Speaker 3: other after they murder someone. That's cool. So he calls.
- 26:20Speaker 3: He calls Bradley, Bradley's former military Bradley goes through the house.
- 26:24Speaker 3: According to what Bradley told me, which blew my mind,
- 26:26Speaker 3: he's like, well, first thing I did was I collected
- 26:29Speaker 3: all the guns, like you collected what what? So I
- 26:33Speaker 3: guess you know, it's Vegas and it's America. There's a
- 26:36Speaker 3: bunch of AK forty seven's or whatever around the house,
- 26:41Speaker 3: just for fun. And he put them all in a
- 26:43Speaker 3: bag and took them away.
- 26:44Speaker 1: And even though the victim was not shot, she was
- 26:47Speaker 1: not shot. There were zero gunshots fired.
- 26:49Speaker 3: No guns. This was not a gun murder nothing. In fact,
- 26:53Speaker 3: there was no weapon, but there was no gunshots. But
- 26:56Speaker 3: you know, he knows the cops might show up and
- 26:58Speaker 3: there's a lot of guns around. Probably probably a smart move.
- 27:01Speaker 3: He does his little military thing and like investigates and whatever,
- 27:05Speaker 3: does a sweep yes, he does a sweep, puts the
- 27:08Speaker 3: guns in a bag. Brace comes over because Ash called him.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Brace looks around, smells the worst smell he's ever smelled.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Brace says, and he says this in the in the dock,
- 27:19Speaker 3: something like, you know, I just knew it was horrible,
- 27:22Speaker 3: and I'll never forget the feeling I got when I
- 27:26Speaker 3: looked in, I looked, I turned around, I left, And
- 27:31Speaker 3: so maybe he wasn't the best friend, but but Bradley
- 27:34Speaker 3: stayed anyway. In fact, Bradley is the person who told Ash, okay,
- 27:40Speaker 3: you got to call nine one one now. And Bradley
- 27:43Speaker 3: was sitting next to Ash when he called nine one one,
- 27:46Speaker 3: And if you listen really carefully on the call. At first,
- 27:50Speaker 3: Ash says, can you please send the police, and Bradley,
- 27:53Speaker 3: in the very background says like ambulance, not polof and
- 27:58Speaker 3: so then Ash says, I need an ambulance. Uh. And
- 28:01Speaker 3: then those guys got the hell out of Dodge before
- 28:04Speaker 3: the cops got there.
- 28:06Speaker 1: But Bradley and Bradley and Brace split correct.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Correct. So I'm talking to Bradley Evan or drink about
- 28:12Speaker 3: what he learned, and he said Ash. All Ash was
- 28:15Speaker 3: talking about was demons He's like, there were demons all around,
- 28:19Speaker 3: and they were they were trying to kill the dog,
- 28:21Speaker 3: and so I had to kill the demons. And then
- 28:24Speaker 3: she was possessed. And then and Bradley was telling me
- 28:27Speaker 3: this like it wasn't weird, like like this is reality
- 28:32Speaker 3: in some way. Now, probably a bad trip, but I
- 28:37Speaker 3: mean a really bad trip. I've taken many trips in
- 28:41Speaker 3: that way, good and bad. Never seen demons, but also
- 28:45Speaker 3: never killed anyone, So what are you gonna do? But
- 28:49Speaker 3: so there were many demons, she was possessed, There was
- 28:52Speaker 3: candlewax found all over the place, there were the candles
- 28:56Speaker 3: on her body. So some weird happened. And so I
- 29:02Speaker 3: think there are things that may have happened that didn't
- 29:05Speaker 3: fully come out in the trial and the pill.
- 29:08Speaker 1: There was no trial right right, There actually wasn't a trial.
- 29:12Speaker 1: He pled guilty and there was a sentence in hearing.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Well, and according to him and his family, he was
- 29:19Speaker 3: railroaded into taking an alpha plea, which is that plea
- 29:24Speaker 3: where you plead guilty but you don't admit doing it.
- 29:27Speaker 3: So and he didn't want to do that plea for
- 29:31Speaker 3: a while, and then they finally said, look, if you don't.
- 29:34Speaker 3: This is the end of your life forever. You should
- 29:37Speaker 3: do this and maybe you'll get out in like ten
- 29:39Speaker 3: years or whatever. It was. So I feel like he
- 29:42Speaker 3: was pushed, and I think that's a common thing in
- 29:45Speaker 3: many crime cases where just to save the time and
- 29:49Speaker 3: money on court hearings, they kind of railroad you into
- 29:52Speaker 3: taking a plea. So he never really got his day
- 29:56Speaker 3: in court, and he's never really there's a lot of
- 30:00Speaker 3: one and answered questions about what exactly happened.
- 30:03Speaker 1: So right now you obviously visited Ash. He's serving his term.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Where is he He's in Nevada.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Summer Nevada High Desert State Prison.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Like how far outside of Vegas?
- 30:16Speaker 3: Was that like forty five minute drive in the middle
- 30:20Speaker 3: of nowhere. If anyone escapes, they're dying on the on
- 30:23Speaker 3: the walk home. Okay, So it's it's a pretty dismal place.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Okay. So he was sentenced to eight to twenty for
- 30:30Speaker 1: his involuntary mounslaughter. So he's it's twoenty twenty five, so
- 30:33Speaker 1: he's like five four or five years into his sentence.
- 30:36Speaker 3: Yep.
- 30:36Speaker 1: So he's up for parole in three years.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I believe.
- 30:40Speaker 1: So yeah, Okay, So that's where he is.
- 30:44Speaker 3: So brace now is living between Michigan and Vegas. I'm
- 30:49Speaker 3: not exactly sure what he's doing. Last I talked to him,
- 30:52Speaker 3: he told me to buy gold. So, uh okay, Yeah,
- 30:56Speaker 3: that's that's him. Yeah, he's always got tips. Okay, I
- 31:00Speaker 3: think I think he's he should be an actor and
- 31:03Speaker 3: I would love to put him in something.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So yeah, I actually do too.
- 31:06Speaker 3: He's great.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Yeah, he is great. And I really liked him in
- 31:09Speaker 1: this doc like he I really liked him. I mean
- 31:14Speaker 1: I didn't, you know, I didn't watch Jiggy's at the time.
- 31:16Speaker 1: It wasn't you know, wasn't my jam.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Thanks?
- 31:26Speaker 2: Time for our final segment.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Yes, we have a button.
- 31:28Speaker 2: We have a button. It's very exciting.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Jay.
- 31:31Speaker 2: I am about to give you your next piece of
- 31:33Speaker 2: business for you to feed your kids with. Okay, here's
- 31:36Speaker 2: what we do. Whoever presents the story the other person
- 31:38Speaker 2: then pitches a true crime story fresh hot off the
- 31:41Speaker 2: presses that we think is next to be adapted, either
- 31:45Speaker 2: descripted or unscripted. Oh okay, I like, so I'm gonna
- 31:47Speaker 2: put you back in Vegas too. My story that I'm
- 31:49Speaker 2: pitching is about Aurora Phelps, forty three year old woman
- 31:52Speaker 2: from Las Vegas, your favorite place, who lured older men
- 31:57Speaker 2: over the interwebs with fake alias, seduced them, drugged them,
- 32:02Speaker 2: took them all to Mexico and stole tons of money
- 32:05Speaker 2: from them, and killed them.
- 32:07Speaker 1: As crazy as this story is, we want you to
- 32:10Speaker 1: know that, at the time of taping, all charges against
- 32:13Speaker 1: Aura Phelps are still pending and she is presumed innocent
- 32:16Speaker 1: until proven guilty. Like how old were these dudes?
- 32:20Speaker 2: Like eighties? Oh shoot, yes, yeah, that's the not fun
- 32:23Speaker 2: part of this.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I mean, none of it's good.
- 32:26Speaker 3: I think for the TV or movie version. The guys
- 32:29Speaker 3: are younger, Okay, much better story.
- 32:31Speaker 2: And they're they're bastards.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Yeah, they're bastards, but they're but they're complicated.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Yeah yeah. When one case, she used a victim's bank
- 32:41Speaker 2: account to buy a gold coin days after the victim
- 32:43Speaker 2: had been found dead.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Maybe she heard from brace.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Perhaps in another case, she sold around three point three
- 32:49Speaker 2: million dollars in applestock belonging to a different victim. She's
- 32:52Speaker 2: also married and the husband had no idea about it.
- 32:54Speaker 2: We like to figure out who would be cast in this,
- 32:58Speaker 2: any ideas for who would play Aurora fel.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Okay, she's got to be attractive because she's convincing guys
- 33:06Speaker 3: to hang out with her. Yes, but she's sort of
- 33:09Speaker 3: a little nefarious.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Yes, Jennifer Coolidge just kidding. That would just be funny.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Jennifer Coolidge, Yeah no.
- 33:17Speaker 1: But what about the girl in the second season.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Of White Loads, Aubrey Plaza.
- 33:22Speaker 1: There, we got her name.
- 33:25Speaker 2: That's definitely see it coming. Though Aubrey is not going
- 33:29Speaker 2: to be you'll see it coming.
- 33:30Speaker 3: But Aubrey she'll give drugs, yeah for sure.
- 33:35Speaker 2: All right, So you're welcome.
- 33:36Speaker 3: This is fun. You guys are great. I hope this
- 33:39Speaker 3: podcast becomes the new Joe Rogan so.
