- 0:21Speaker 1: and supercars approving once again that Australian motorsport chaos is
- 0:25Speaker 1: alive and well. We'll break down at the biggest headlines,
- 0:29Speaker 1: the wildest rumors, the best performances, and the stories that
- 0:32Speaker 1: made every group chat explode this week. So whether you're
- 0:36Speaker 1: here for Nie Slider's pit stops or burnouts, buckle up
- 0:39Speaker 1: because you're in for a wild ride. This episode of
- 0:42Speaker 1: Pit Talk is brought to you by Shannon's Insurance. I'm
- 0:44Speaker 1: your host, Rinita Vmuelin and adjoining me is pit Talk's
- 0:48Speaker 1: four Wheel Chaos coordinator Michael Lamonado. Michael, welcome back. How
- 0:54Speaker 1: are you going good?
- 0:56Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm chaotic enough to live up
- 0:57Speaker 2: to that one. I'm going to have to just derail
- 0:59Speaker 2: this podcast at various points. My kids could run in
- 1:03Speaker 2: at any time. That'd be pretty chaotic. But it's good
- 1:05Speaker 2: to be here after I mean, obviously from the F
- 1:07Speaker 2: one side of things. Actually having some racing has been
- 1:10Speaker 2: a really pleasant change of pace.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's been it's been great, and it's
- 1:14Speaker 1: been phenomenal. But not only have we had F one,
- 1:17Speaker 1: we've had supercars and also we have had MotoGP And
- 1:21Speaker 1: if there's a man who's got the Moto GP paddock
- 1:25Speaker 1: drama covered, there's chances that he's already written about it
- 1:28Speaker 1: before he's had hiss Breakfast is Matt Clayton. Matt, We've
- 1:32Speaker 1: got a lot to discuss as well.
- 1:34Speaker 3: We sure do. Hello, Anita, Halene Michael. It's bizarre that
- 1:38Speaker 3: you know, you always like to plug my ability to
- 1:41Speaker 3: weave a stat into every single conversation, So I do
- 1:43Speaker 3: have one for you here. I think this is the
- 1:45Speaker 3: one hundred and eleventh episode of this podcast, and I
- 1:48Speaker 3: believe it's the first one all three of us have
- 1:49Speaker 3: been on together. So there's a stat for you that
- 1:51Speaker 3: you won't read anywhere else but other than on this
- 1:52Speaker 3: particular platform. But I was particularly proud of that. I
- 1:55Speaker 3: can't believe it's taken us this long, but I'm happy
- 1:57Speaker 3: we're all here.
- 2:00Speaker 1: We are all here as well. Now before we get
- 2:02Speaker 1: into everything, Meto GP in two wheels. We need to
- 2:05Speaker 1: start with four wheels because this weekend we had at
- 2:08Speaker 1: the Canadian at Grand Prix, which I know you both
- 2:10Speaker 1: covered intensely, but I want to start with Mercedes because
- 2:14Speaker 1: it really felt like Canada was just a movie script.
- 2:17Speaker 1: You know, we had the teammate battles to sprint, contact tensions,
- 2:20Speaker 1: Russell retiring, Antonelli winning. What did we learn from this weekend, Michael?
- 2:25Speaker 1: What was the biggest storylines to come out of there?
- 2:28Speaker 2: Well, this was we talked about this obviously on last
- 2:30Speaker 2: week's podcast. Not a must win race for George Russell,
- 2:33Speaker 2: but a really indicative one because this has become something
- 2:37Speaker 2: of a Russell circuit in the last couple of years
- 2:39Speaker 2: as he's grown in statute and also variously when Mercedes
- 2:42Speaker 2: has been able to contend for the podium in the
- 2:44Speaker 2: last couple of years. So how he did this weekend,
- 2:47Speaker 2: having been defeated in the previous three Grand Prix in
- 2:49Speaker 2: Miami quite heavily by his teammate Andre Kimi Antonelli was
- 2:52Speaker 2: going to be important in this narrative that we're still
- 2:55Speaker 2: developing because they've been so few Grand Prixs so far
- 2:58Speaker 2: this year, so very much still the narrative of where
- 3:01Speaker 2: this championship was going, plus other teams, which we might
- 3:04Speaker 2: get onto a little bit later on. And Russell upheld
- 3:07Speaker 2: his part of the bargain, which is what complicates, I guess,
- 3:10Speaker 2: the dissection of this a little bit. He was clearly
- 3:11Speaker 2: very quick, at least had an at least fifty to
- 3:15Speaker 2: fifty chance of winning the Grand Prix before his retirement,
- 3:17Speaker 2: did win the sprint, got both pole positions, but Matt
- 3:20Speaker 2: anton nally was right there the entire time in qualifying,
- 3:24Speaker 2: in both qualifying sessions exactly the same margin less than
- 3:27Speaker 2: a tenth of a second, had at least an equal
- 3:30Speaker 2: shot of winning the sprint. Made a mistake, but then
- 3:34Speaker 2: of course that battle with Russell, different perspectives on who
- 3:37Speaker 2: was right and who was wrong in so much as
- 3:38Speaker 2: anyone was right or wrong, And then in the Grand
- 3:40Speaker 2: Prix obviously won it and they were trading places a lot.
- 3:43Speaker 2: That for me felt just as important that he was
- 3:46Speaker 2: at a Russell track as good arguably my opinion, interested
- 3:50Speaker 2: in your one to take on this as well, Matt
- 3:52Speaker 2: maybe slightly quicker than Russell in the races.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Yeah, it definitely felt like that, and I think this
- 3:57Speaker 3: is one of those rare weekends where both things can
- 3:59Speaker 3: be true. I think, you know, Russell needed to elevate
- 4:01Speaker 3: his game based on what we've seen in the previous
- 4:03Speaker 3: few rounds, and it did feel like he did that now,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and whether that's a confluence of circuit characteristics and just
- 4:10Speaker 3: a need to kind of put him put his flag
- 4:13Speaker 3: in the sand a little bit and really stand up
- 4:14Speaker 3: for himself. Conversely, Antonelli, you know, we all know this
- 4:18Speaker 3: is a Russell track, as you put in air quotes before,
- 4:20Speaker 3: because it has been historically. Antonelli's got such a limited
- 4:24Speaker 3: set of records here because he's only in his second season.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I thought, I thought he really elevated his game over
- 4:30Speaker 3: the course of the weekend. He absolutely took it to
- 4:32Speaker 3: Russell at a Russell track, And it felt over the
- 4:35Speaker 3: course of the weekend, even though Russell took the polls
- 4:38Speaker 3: and won the sprint, it did feel like Antonelli was
- 4:41Speaker 3: the quicker driver over the course of the weekend of
- 4:43Speaker 3: the two of them. Now, quicker doesn't always translate to results,
- 4:46Speaker 3: because I think there was maybe a little less refinement
- 4:49Speaker 3: in what he was doing. But I do wonder how
- 4:52Speaker 3: much of that extra aggression and the way he raced
- 4:55Speaker 3: Russell over the course of the weekend. You can do
- 4:57Speaker 3: that when you've got a championship lead. And I do
- 4:59Speaker 3: want under what the narrative leading into the race weekend
- 5:02Speaker 3: played out in terms of how he approached the weekend,
- 5:04Speaker 3: because I wouldn't say it's nothing to lose weekend for Antonelli,
- 5:08Speaker 3: but it was one of those weekends where he could
- 5:10Speaker 3: probably afford to be a little bit more feisty simply
- 5:13Speaker 3: because he came in with a statistical high ground. I
- 5:15Speaker 3: thought both of them came out of this weekend naturally
- 5:17Speaker 3: with their reputations in hearts frontally enough, even though the
- 5:20Speaker 3: championship gap is wide and as I'm sure we'll get to,
- 5:22Speaker 3: but it was just interesting in the way that it
- 5:24Speaker 3: played out. And I guess the other factor in all
- 5:26Speaker 3: of this that we'll get to, because it is a
- 5:28Speaker 3: one team, two driver fight right now. Everyone else is
- 5:31Speaker 3: just there to sort of make up the minor placings
- 5:33Speaker 3: and just you know, give us a nice shot at
- 5:35Speaker 3: the starting grid. It was just super interesting to see
- 5:37Speaker 3: how these races played out another sprint race weekend, but
- 5:40Speaker 3: just the level of aggression between these two five rounds
- 5:43Speaker 3: into the season was quite something.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I thought you mentioned that the Sorry Michael, I was
- 5:49Speaker 1: just going to say the points gap, and I think
- 5:51Speaker 1: just for listeners, you don't know it is a forty
- 5:53Speaker 1: three point lead now for Antonelli over that. Before you continue,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I just want to know, are we really seeing like
- 5:59Speaker 1: this whole change of the guards situation happened at Mercedes? Now?
- 6:04Speaker 2: I think this is I mean, this is obviously the
- 6:06Speaker 2: question of the year, right because if Antonelli wins the title,
- 6:10Speaker 2: even if he takes it right down to the last
- 6:11Speaker 2: race and you know it's lost in a fifty tixo
- 6:13Speaker 2: or whatever, that does feel generationally significant. And we shouldn't
- 6:17Speaker 2: forget that he's at Mercedes at such a young age
- 6:20Speaker 2: because the team believes he's the next superstar, not just
- 6:25Speaker 2: you know, with no disrespect to George Russell, who knows
- 6:26Speaker 2: where Georg Russe is gonna end up in multiple years,
- 6:28Speaker 2: but you know, no, respective Georg Russell not a Russell
- 6:31Speaker 2: level superstar like a Hamilton Verstapam level multiple title win,
- 6:35Speaker 2: a generational defining talent. And I mean the step is
- 6:39Speaker 2: taken from year one to year two certainly suggests that
- 6:41Speaker 2: they were on the right path and thinking that and
- 6:44Speaker 2: you know, I thought multiple times over the course of
- 6:47Speaker 2: this weekend, sometimes a little bit of a stretch. But
- 6:49Speaker 2: you think of the step that Piastre made year two
- 6:51Speaker 2: to year three. Well, Antonelli has done that a year earlier.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And that's not to talk down Piastre. The circumstances obviously
- 6:56Speaker 2: very different. But the other element that I thought was
- 6:59Speaker 2: an interesting contrary example or contrast or parallel with McLaren
- 7:04Speaker 2: was that you talked about the aggression. That's something McLaren
- 7:07Speaker 2: didn't allow to happen last year. Yes, a little bit
- 7:10Speaker 2: of that is the characters are different, right, Like Piastri
- 7:13Speaker 2: is very I mean this in a very positive way,
- 7:15Speaker 2: by the way, very low wattage as a as a character,
- 7:18Speaker 2: I guess, like everything he just takes in his stride.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Even Lando Norris, I think is a little bit like that.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Plus there was this heavy hand of McLaren pressing down
- 7:25Speaker 2: on any sign of controversy. Who knows if we say,
- 7:28Speaker 2: he's going to allow it to continue this way, but
- 7:30Speaker 2: it was gloves off, and really important it was gloves
- 7:33Speaker 2: off in the sprint, and then they were allowed to
- 7:35Speaker 2: continue being gloves offs in the race. You know, if
- 7:37Speaker 2: we saw the race that they were much more relaxed
- 7:39Speaker 2: than we'd say. Okay, someone's had a bit of a
- 7:41Speaker 2: talking to here, but it sets the tone more than anything.
- 7:44Speaker 2: The generational question is a good one, but I think
- 7:45Speaker 2: it's a longer term one. The tone here of how
- 7:48Speaker 2: they're going to go about the battle for the year
- 7:50Speaker 2: is what I think was defined, and I think it's
- 7:52Speaker 2: good news for us.
- 7:54Speaker 3: The tone. Can I just say eight or two things,
- 7:56Speaker 3: A thank God we're actually going to allow to be
- 7:58Speaker 3: based to fight each other for something. But I still
- 8:01Speaker 3: can't look at a Papyra in the supermarket without regrettive
- 8:05Speaker 3: last year because of the papy rules and everything that
- 8:07Speaker 3: went on last year. We could have had this last
- 8:10Speaker 3: year and it would have been completely justifiable. And your
- 8:13Speaker 3: comment that you made there before about the differing personality
- 8:16Speaker 3: types of perhaps the two underdogs or less herald of
- 8:20Speaker 3: drivers in these particular situations. I don't want to get
- 8:23Speaker 3: all sky sports get your black armband on here because
- 8:25Speaker 3: it is a British driver that it is a British
- 8:28Speaker 3: driver that's being attacked from both quarters here. But what
- 8:31Speaker 3: you said before about the personality, it's so true in
- 8:33Speaker 3: that anthimally, can I wouldn't say get away with it,
- 8:36Speaker 3: but you can understand it more simply because it's a
- 8:39Speaker 3: product of the youth that he's inexperienced. The guy's not
- 8:42Speaker 3: even twenty years old yet he is ahead of schedule,
- 8:44Speaker 3: as you mentioned before. But it was just nice to
- 8:47Speaker 3: see two drivers in clearly demonstrably the fastest car in
- 8:52Speaker 3: the field, actually being able to fight one another and
- 8:55Speaker 3: being treated like adults. And it just made me probably
- 8:58Speaker 3: resent what happened last year more quite frankly, in retrospect.
- 9:01Speaker 3: But I don't want to think about twenty twenty five anymore.
- 9:04Speaker 3: That's in the bin, that's all past history. But if
- 9:06Speaker 3: this is going to be what we get in terms
- 9:07Speaker 3: of a sporting spectacle for the rest of the season,
- 9:09Speaker 3: then I don't honestly care who wins, but more of
- 9:12Speaker 3: what we saw in the sprint in the first what
- 9:14Speaker 3: twenty five to thirty laps of Canada on Monday morning
- 9:17Speaker 3: our time. Bring it on, because if nothing else, it
- 9:20Speaker 3: was fantastic TV and yeah, real edge of the seat stuff,
- 9:23Speaker 3: and it won't be the last time we see it either.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Ironic that one of the drivers they're treating as an
- 9:28Speaker 2: adult is in fact not an adult here, so.
- 9:30Speaker 3: In certain parts of the world, No, but very true.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Well, yes, that's true in me. I think Canada, Canada,
- 9:35Speaker 2: what's the age of it as an eighteen or twenty
- 9:37Speaker 2: one there?
- 9:38Speaker 3: What kind of ship was he spraying? Given that America
- 9:41Speaker 3: it's twenty one, is probably eighteen, just despite the Americans.
- 9:43Speaker 3: The Canadians don't like to do things the way the
- 9:44Speaker 3: Americans do them, so look, it's probably eighteen. They're a
- 9:46Speaker 3: good cobble wealth country. Will make it eighteen.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Let's go from the highs of Mercedes and Kimmy winning
- 9:54Speaker 1: to the lows of McLaren because you mentioned it there
- 9:57Speaker 1: and the whole disastrous score Sunday that sided with both
- 10:01Speaker 1: cars being put on wet tires on a dry track. Okay,
- 10:06Speaker 1: is there clearly deeper problems going on here back at
- 10:10Speaker 1: McLaren that we are just not seeing to the average viewer.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I think, you know, it's funny. It's not the first
- 10:18Speaker 2: time we've talked about McLaren in twenty twenty five, but
- 10:21Speaker 2: it does feel like there's a little connection here. And
- 10:23Speaker 2: I'm always a little bit cautious, and I think we
- 10:25Speaker 2: have on the podcast as well, been mad about being
- 10:27Speaker 2: too critical of McLaren because they did in the last
- 10:29Speaker 2: two Constructors Titans. So you can only be so critical
- 10:32Speaker 2: in the results of it and last year's Drivers Championship,
- 10:35Speaker 2: But we saw multiple times over the last couple of
- 10:37Speaker 2: years that strategically, I think a not as sharp as
- 10:40Speaker 2: they should be, but then also as part of that,
- 10:44Speaker 2: just more conservative than they probably should be for a
- 10:47Speaker 2: team that you would think in every other facet is
- 10:49Speaker 2: coming into this Purple Pats technically various, two great drivers,
- 10:52Speaker 2: very effective team managers, all that kind of thing, but
- 10:55Speaker 2: just aren't willing to be in the way that Red
- 10:58Speaker 2: Bull Racing, as one example, historically always like very much
- 11:00Speaker 2: on the front foot, but also Mercedes has been I
- 11:03Speaker 2: think we're going to see that probably over the course
- 11:04Speaker 2: of the year as they're asked to respond to more questions.
- 11:08Speaker 2: But then even then, you know, what were intermediate tires conservative?
- 11:13Speaker 2: Is that letting them too much off the hook? Do
- 11:14Speaker 2: you think that or is it just a mistake with
- 11:17Speaker 2: no real explanation other than you know, to be fair
- 11:20Speaker 2: to them. The way that the track was drying very
- 11:23Speaker 2: slowly meant for half an hour, it was in between
- 11:25Speaker 2: two compounds, and they made the wrong call. But then
- 11:28Speaker 2: no one in the top ten made that call either correct.
- 11:30Speaker 3: If Authosaurus has the word wrong next to the word conservative,
- 11:34Speaker 3: then yes, they can be the same conversation. And what
- 11:36Speaker 3: surprised me about it is, yes, you know they are
- 11:39Speaker 3: on the side of conservatism. And when you thought of
- 11:42Speaker 3: which of the leading teams would probably do something like this,
- 11:45Speaker 3: this was the team you probably had tab for doing it.
- 11:48Speaker 3: What I did not understand, and god knows, let's hope
- 11:51Speaker 3: this is not because of some sort of condition of
- 11:53Speaker 3: fairness or something. If you're not sure and the rest
- 11:56Speaker 3: of the grid is certainly going in one direction, then
- 11:58Speaker 3: why didn't they split them? And you know you have
- 12:01Speaker 3: one car and one strategy in one on the other
- 12:03Speaker 3: It was really interesting in the post race comments that
- 12:05Speaker 3: I mean we heard Piastre in the moment questioning the
- 12:08Speaker 3: decision multiple times, and that it was interesting in the
- 12:11Speaker 3: aftermath of the race that Norris said, you know, the
- 12:14Speaker 3: decision was proven to be incorrect, but I played a
- 12:16Speaker 3: part in that, so he was more prepared to the
- 12:19Speaker 3: team decided this, that I was part of that decision. Now,
- 12:22Speaker 3: Piastre did not necessarily not say that, but he made
- 12:25Speaker 3: his feelings about what was going on at the start
- 12:27Speaker 3: of that race pretty clear over the radio. So I
- 12:29Speaker 3: wonder if we're going to go down this path of
- 12:32Speaker 3: let's be completely even handed here, which you know, from
- 12:35Speaker 3: a position of advantage they were in last year, that
- 12:37Speaker 3: made complete sense. You're the underdog. Now you're the team
- 12:40Speaker 3: that needs to actually do something different, but not wrong different.
- 12:44Speaker 3: You've got to split the strategy. You've got to split
- 12:46Speaker 3: the strategies in this situation because if you both do
- 12:49Speaker 3: the same thing, you're going to end up in the
- 12:50Speaker 3: same place anyway. And you could argue that what happened
- 12:53Speaker 3: to McLaren after starting the race on the wrong tires,
- 12:55Speaker 3: there was just a snowball effect, particularly with Piastre. I
- 12:57Speaker 3: think with what happened there wasn't the day to be conservative.
- 13:01Speaker 3: You're in a really good grid position, you look like
- 13:04Speaker 3: you had a chance to upset the established order, but
- 13:08Speaker 3: you don't do it like that. And just as you
- 13:11Speaker 3: said before, it was I don't know about you, but
- 13:14Speaker 3: I read the decision of Audi to start the race
- 13:16Speaker 3: on the intermediate tires was probably more a function of
- 13:19Speaker 3: how rubbish they are getting off the starts on normal
- 13:21Speaker 3: tires at the same time, so anything that would provided
- 13:23Speaker 3: any other grip from the fifth or sixth row of
- 13:25Speaker 3: the grid. That was about the most meaningful contribution Audy
- 13:28Speaker 3: made to the entire race. But that's another discussion. But
- 13:30Speaker 3: I just didn't think that if a team needed to
- 13:32Speaker 3: make that decision, it was McLaren and they kind of
- 13:35Speaker 3: snookend themselves before the race even started, and then, as
- 13:37Speaker 3: you said, Rodita, we saw what happened after that. They
- 13:39Speaker 3: left with absolutely nothing.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Do you think, though, that there's pressure for them from
- 13:45Speaker 1: McLaren to live up to the standards of what they
- 13:48Speaker 1: achieved last year, that they are just trying too hard
- 13:50Speaker 1: and there's no harmony working within that team environment, because
- 13:54Speaker 1: that's really key. It's key to have some sort of
- 13:57Speaker 1: balance there. And from every I'm reading online and the
- 14:01Speaker 1: rumors and whatnot, it seems like there's almost it's like
- 14:03Speaker 1: the Magnets are pushing against each other. I might be
- 14:06Speaker 1: totally wrong here, but this is just the vibe I'm
- 14:08Speaker 1: picking up.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I think if there's pressure at McLaren, it's that times
- 14:13Speaker 2: running out on this season is and I know it's
- 14:15Speaker 2: weird to say that for only five races, the car
- 14:18Speaker 2: is close but not enough. They've got the power unit
- 14:21Speaker 2: the Mercedes has, but it's the points they lost in
- 14:24Speaker 2: the first three rounds. I guess before Miami obviously, because
- 14:28Speaker 2: that was they walked away with the most points there.
- 14:30Speaker 2: But from that moment they needed to be at least
- 14:33Speaker 2: scoring equal to Mercedes and then hoping that over the
- 14:35Speaker 2: course of the year. Development means they can start out
- 14:37Speaker 2: scoring them similar to the way they beat Red Bull
- 14:39Speaker 2: Racing two years ago. Yes, losing as many points as
- 14:42Speaker 2: this just means that that comeback is so much more significant.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So I don't think it's less about do they have
- 14:49Speaker 2: the right ingredients, because I think for the past couple
- 14:50Speaker 2: of years they've proven they have. They haven't really lost
- 14:52Speaker 2: many of those ingredients of anything. They're adding to them
- 14:54Speaker 2: with other high profile staff from other teams. It's just
- 14:58Speaker 2: this pressure of where the clock's expired really quickly on
- 15:01Speaker 2: this season because Mercedes is making so few mistakes, scoring
- 15:04Speaker 2: so heavily, and McLaren's had now so many races. I mean,
- 15:07Speaker 2: China didn't even start the Grand Prix. It's pretty much
- 15:09Speaker 2: a repeat of that, and there are too many races
- 15:11Speaker 2: where they walked away with practically nothing.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Well, McLaren's basically done sixty percent of the season so far,
- 15:16Speaker 3: because there's been two races that they may as well
- 15:18Speaker 3: not turn up to because China neither car got on
- 15:21Speaker 3: the starting grid, and then after what happened on the
- 15:23Speaker 3: starting grid in Canada, they may as well have not
- 15:24Speaker 3: shown up for that one as well. So when you're
- 15:26Speaker 3: coming at a position of performance disadvantage, you can't afford
- 15:30Speaker 3: to effectively just throw two out of the first five
- 15:32Speaker 3: rounds in the bin. And because they have now done that,
- 15:36Speaker 3: I think it changes the expectations of what we can
- 15:38Speaker 3: imagine that their goals are for the rest of the season.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Now it feels like the Mercedes horse has bolted. So
- 15:43Speaker 3: then what are you actually playing for. If you're playing
- 15:45Speaker 3: to be best of the rest and perhaps narrow the
- 15:47Speaker 3: gap over the course of the season, that's fine, but
- 15:50Speaker 3: that's not what you come into the season as a
- 15:52Speaker 3: two time Raining Constructors Champion and the reigning World Drivers Champion.
- 15:56Speaker 3: That's not your goal at the start of the season.
- 15:58Speaker 3: And here we are five rounds in and it feels
- 15:59Speaker 3: that the goals changed.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Already, got to bring back drop points, don't they drop round?
- 16:04Speaker 2: That was popular war, wasn't it?
- 16:05Speaker 1: Well?
- 16:06Speaker 2: They need but they know I'm constantly confused when I
- 16:10Speaker 2: read about it.
- 16:10Speaker 3: There's so many rounds in Formula the one that we
- 16:12Speaker 3: could probably afford. I mean, we've dropped Bahrain and Saudi
- 16:15Speaker 3: until they stitched together back into the calendar when you
- 16:17Speaker 3: do six consecutive Rodbery weekends in November, and like, good
- 16:20Speaker 3: luck to that. But yeah, right now they'd like to
- 16:23Speaker 3: be able to drop a couple because they've just basically
- 16:25Speaker 3: not turned up for two of them.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Let's move on to maxwithstaff and quietly grabbing red Bull's
- 16:33Speaker 1: first podium of the season. But what's the latest on
- 16:37Speaker 1: his future? Are we seeing ideas that maybe he's wanting
- 16:42Speaker 1: to say and he's wanting to keep continuing with this
- 16:45Speaker 1: whole rule change that's happening.
- 16:48Speaker 2: It depends which day you asked him. I think on
- 16:52Speaker 2: Thursday he was very much on board with staying in
- 16:54Speaker 2: Formula one, And then I think what happened is the
- 16:57Speaker 2: impression I got anyway that as it became clear over
- 17:00Speaker 2: the weekend that the agreement that everyone said that they'd
- 17:03Speaker 2: reached about changing next to year's rules wasn't actually there
- 17:06Speaker 2: was no agreement. That nothing's been agreed and they may
- 17:08Speaker 2: not agree on anything he became increasingly pessimistic about whether
- 17:12Speaker 2: or not it's going to be Formula one was a
- 17:14Speaker 2: quote I wish i'd written it down, Matt, you might
- 17:15Speaker 2: have it off the top of your head better remember
- 17:17Speaker 2: than me. It's mentally not feasible to continue or emotionally
- 17:21Speaker 2: not feasible, he said on after qualifying, which is of
- 17:24Speaker 2: course the worst part of the weekend for him with
- 17:26Speaker 2: these engines. So I think, you know, he looked very
- 17:28Speaker 2: happy on Sunday being on the podium, as he would
- 17:30Speaker 2: be got on the podium. I think Max is also aware,
- 17:33Speaker 2: though you know, that that was a big result for
- 17:35Speaker 2: the team and also for Ford, depending on how much
- 17:38Speaker 2: you think Ford is involved in making that engine. So
- 17:41Speaker 2: it was doing the right thing politically, But then clearly
- 17:44Speaker 2: said after interviews, while adding you know, I don't want
- 17:46Speaker 2: to be negative in this moment, that actually he was
- 17:49Speaker 2: still feeling pretty negative about Formula one. So it's all
- 17:51Speaker 2: going to depend on what those rule changes. If they
- 17:54Speaker 2: are agreed, they need to be done pretty quickly. I
- 17:57Speaker 2: think by around Monaco, maybe Monaco be the crunch weekend,
- 18:00Speaker 2: because by then it's already June, so we'll no sooner
- 18:03Speaker 2: rather than later. But I thought it was also interesting
- 18:05Speaker 2: that he said if he does go, this is not
- 18:07Speaker 2: a sabbatical. This is not a you fix it while
- 18:10Speaker 2: I'm gone, This is this is it? So potentially we
- 18:12Speaker 2: are talking about the last year of Max Vstappen as
- 18:15Speaker 2: a Grand Prix driver, which is just it feels increasingly
- 18:18Speaker 2: real despite these steps towards keeping him. It also feels
- 18:21Speaker 2: like if it could happen, it feels more tangible.
- 18:25Speaker 3: You've always been a fan of the word sabbatical, like
- 18:27Speaker 3: I've just weave that in there. But you mentioned that
- 18:30Speaker 3: he was all optimistic on Thursday and then he had
- 18:32Speaker 3: to drive the car on Friday a room. But how
- 18:34Speaker 3: it was, it wasn't as much fun as driving the
- 18:37Speaker 3: driving the Mercedes in the nurburg Green twenty four hour.
- 18:39Speaker 3: But look, I think your point about him being happy
- 18:43Speaker 3: for the team as much as anything else, and presenting
- 18:46Speaker 3: a unified outward front on Sunday. It's a big achievement
- 18:49Speaker 3: for Red Bull to be producing their own engines in
- 18:52Speaker 3: house and to get on the podium. Now there's all
- 18:54Speaker 3: sorts of asterisks. There's no McLaren's in the race, there's
- 18:56Speaker 3: a Mercedes not finishing the race. You know caveats as
- 19:00Speaker 3: they are, they still manage to get on the podium.
- 19:02Speaker 3: But the agreement in inverted commas that we were talking
- 19:06Speaker 3: about there, I mean, the clock is ticking so loudly
- 19:08Speaker 3: on this thing, and there's a number of knock on effects.
- 19:11Speaker 3: It's not just the Max is a headliner here if
- 19:14Speaker 3: he decides that he is going to walk away because
- 19:16Speaker 3: the sport is just not something that he can stomach
- 19:18Speaker 3: fe in its current form for twenty twenty seven onwards.
- 19:21Speaker 3: But there is a real knock on effect here. And
- 19:24Speaker 3: this is a really interesting case for me with what
- 19:26Speaker 3: does Formula one want to be next year? Like who
- 19:29Speaker 3: are we trying to appease here? Who is it most
- 19:31Speaker 3: important to a pease the other thing that? And Michael,
- 19:35Speaker 3: we're guilty of this because we live in this Formula
- 19:37Speaker 3: one bubble and all the people covering it and what
- 19:39Speaker 3: have you. Try and explain what's going on now to
- 19:42Speaker 3: someone who's only partially interested in Formula one and they're
- 19:44Speaker 3: sort of hearing bits and pieces about what's going on
- 19:46Speaker 3: with the sport. The sport actually needs to get its
- 19:49Speaker 3: head out from under the doner for once and actually
- 19:50Speaker 3: look at how this is being perceived by the wider world. Here,
- 19:54Speaker 3: the average fan could not care less about how we
- 19:57Speaker 3: get to a conclusion with the way these engines are
- 19:59Speaker 3: just distributed. What they are going to care about is
- 20:01Speaker 3: if a four time world champion and the best driver
- 20:04Speaker 3: in Formula one decides to leave the sport while he's
- 20:07Speaker 3: still in his prime, and we maybe we're losing sight
- 20:10Speaker 3: of the bigger picture here. Formula one will carry on
- 20:13Speaker 3: as it always has when prominent drivers have left, maybe
- 20:16Speaker 3: too early or whatever it is. You can't lose a
- 20:19Speaker 3: four time world champion like him in the prime of
- 20:22Speaker 3: his career and he's still the best driver in the
- 20:24Speaker 3: sport over something that is as fixable as this, And
- 20:28Speaker 3: there needs to be a bit of a sensible will
- 20:30Speaker 3: because the bad pr that would come from a stap
- 20:33Speaker 3: and leaving Formula one, I don't think we've probably quite
- 20:35Speaker 3: grasped the gravity of that. It would be a really,
- 20:39Speaker 3: really poor thing for the sport, a really poor look.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Yeah, we just poorly move on. We've got so much
- 20:44Speaker 2: to cover in other categories. But I just think there's
- 20:45Speaker 2: an interesting something I've been thinking about this weekend, because
- 20:48Speaker 2: you're right, the Maxwistappen nuclear threat is real, even if
- 20:52Speaker 2: he's not doing it just for the purpose of his
- 20:54Speaker 2: own betterment, like he wants the same formula on whatever
- 20:56Speaker 2: him walking away net negative for the sport. It'll move on,
- 20:59Speaker 2: but publicity wise not good. We've just had the Canadian
- 21:03Speaker 2: Grand Prix, which I think actually was quite a good
- 21:05Speaker 2: Grand Prix in a non engine sense, very entertaining, felt
- 21:09Speaker 2: very traditional, like a very traditionally good race. We've got
- 21:12Speaker 2: Monaco next, which is all okay. Typically Sunday not great,
- 21:16Speaker 2: but it is going to be one again. We don't
- 21:18Speaker 2: talk about the engines because it's such a slow track.
- 21:21Speaker 2: The engines are not going to play a role. These
- 21:22Speaker 2: two races are in that decision making window. Whereas after
- 21:26Speaker 2: Japan there was that great impetus because that was such
- 21:29Speaker 2: an obviously bad race for a track of that majesty.
- 21:35Speaker 2: These two races are not going to be like that.
- 21:37Speaker 2: There's not going to be that pressure of Wow, these
- 21:39Speaker 2: races are not doing what we like them to do.
- 21:42Speaker 2: This might actually be one of the better Monaco grandri
- 21:43Speaker 2: who's seen recently. In fact that I wonder if that
- 21:46Speaker 2: plays a rong these races actually coming at the wrong time.
- 21:49Speaker 2: To clarify minds in the way they were during that
- 21:51Speaker 2: long April break and wait and see what the decision
- 21:53Speaker 2: ends up being. But I wonder if that's going to
- 21:56Speaker 2: play a role.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I'm really interesting to see how the Verstappen plays out,
- 22:02Speaker 1: because Matt, you brought up something that I was going
- 22:05Speaker 1: to talk about, and I'm really glad you did. Is
- 22:08Speaker 1: having a big name, as is someone who works in
- 22:11Speaker 1: the social side of things, having a big name to
- 22:13Speaker 1: drive people to the sport. Is Now we're talking about
- 22:16Speaker 1: Max potentially leaving. When he does leave, what is the
- 22:19Speaker 1: ripple effect that happens elsewhere? And I think that is
- 22:23Speaker 1: going to be huge as someone who's not necessarily on
- 22:25Speaker 1: the technical side but the fandom side of things. So
- 22:29Speaker 1: I'm really interested to see if things play out there,
- 22:33Speaker 1: how that goes, because I think what happens, like with
- 22:36Speaker 1: the Lewis Hamiltons, and like those sorts of situations where
- 22:39Speaker 1: you see this from a Max and then what's happened.
- 22:42Speaker 1: We've seen it in Moto GP and on the bike
- 22:44Speaker 1: side of things with a Valentino Rossi and how long
- 22:47Speaker 1: he ended up saying. So now we've got the opposite.
- 22:51Speaker 1: But you mentioned Monaco just for the listeners. Monico grandfri
- 22:54Speaker 1: is Sunday, the seventh of June. So back to the
- 22:58Speaker 1: European time zones for the Aussies. You're welcome, love that
- 23:02Speaker 1: for you guys to stay up nicer late. Let's move
- 23:06Speaker 1: on from Formula one to the Aussie's side of things.
- 23:10Speaker 1: And we had on the weekend the supercars were at
- 23:13Speaker 1: Tasmania for the Tasmanian Super for forty and there was
- 23:18Speaker 1: exciting because we had three different winners across the weekend.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And we know that Brock's now got a ninety point
- 23:24Speaker 1: lead heading into Darwin where he dominated last year. Michael,
- 23:29Speaker 1: we know the situation, we know the outcome from last year.
- 23:32Speaker 1: We know Brock and his mindset coming into this season.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Do you think he is head down full gas. He
- 23:39Speaker 1: wants to rewrite what happened last year.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Yeah, head down, full gas, full beard is the motto
- 23:45Speaker 2: for I think that's the indicative element for me. It
- 23:48Speaker 2: feels very twenty twenty five to me. In fact, in
- 23:52Speaker 2: I guess from his perspective the positive way so far, obviously,
- 23:54Speaker 2: because it was exactly this moment Tasmania where he hid
- 23:58Speaker 2: his straps. I think it was his first round victory
- 23:59Speaker 2: last year. It's his first out round victory this year,
- 24:02Speaker 2: tied with Matt Payne the first round in Sydney. He's
- 24:06Speaker 2: also said, and he says this every year, I think,
- 24:08Speaker 2: but he's emphasized it this year that this is when
- 24:09Speaker 2: the season really starts, because you have a bit of
- 24:11Speaker 2: a weird start with Sydney Grand Prix, then those two
- 24:14Speaker 2: rounds in New Zealand long breaks. Now we've got a
- 24:16Speaker 2: pretty regular schedule of all pretty typical Australian circuits that
- 24:20Speaker 2: everyone knows very well. This is where you make or break,
- 24:23Speaker 2: or you will traditionally would anyway, your championship campaign is
- 24:26Speaker 2: where you make or break your Sprint Cup. I guess
- 24:28Speaker 2: this is the case now last year I've just brought
- 24:31Speaker 2: up my stats record here. Five round victories in a
- 24:34Speaker 2: row for him, so that and they are all the
- 24:36Speaker 2: same five rounds coming up Tasmania, Perth, Darwin, Townsville, Ipswich.
- 24:39Speaker 2: He won all of them and that's why he became
- 24:41Speaker 2: such a championship favorite. And you know, Tasmania felt very
- 24:45Speaker 2: much in that mold because it took a little bit
- 24:47Speaker 2: trim to get started practice. Triple A didn't look like
- 24:49Speaker 2: they were on form and is the team that's won
- 24:51Speaker 2: more than any other at Simmons Planes, but built up
- 24:53Speaker 2: to it and then obviously he took care of the
- 24:55Speaker 2: rest and Will Brown was thereabouts in the way he
- 24:57Speaker 2: has been all year. Still waiting to see him really
- 25:00Speaker 2: this year, but nonetheless he was not like he was
- 25:02Speaker 2: a million miles off and this was just a Phoene special.
- 25:04Speaker 2: He's everything clicking again, So it feels very much like
- 25:07Speaker 2: that to me. I wouldn't be surprised if he just
- 25:09Speaker 2: swept through the rest of the Sprint Cup. Notwithstanding though that,
- 25:13Speaker 2: I think Matt Pain's definitely closer this year. Grove Triple
- 25:17Speaker 2: eight still thinks Grove is the form forward team, this
- 25:20Speaker 2: being of course the first year of Triplet and the
- 25:22Speaker 2: Ford Stable, so there's some interesting storylines to come out
- 25:25Speaker 2: of that over the next couple of races. Grove didn't
- 25:27Speaker 2: feel totally convinced about the way they executed this weekend,
- 25:30Speaker 2: but nonetheless, Matt Payne was right there on that final
- 25:33Speaker 2: race in second place, and he's the closest challenger. He's
- 25:35Speaker 2: the one who's ninety points off, which is in the
- 25:38Speaker 2: Supercar's points system, not that far really, it's only I
- 25:42Speaker 2: can't even remember the number of players, but it's not
- 25:44Speaker 2: that far. But it does feel it certainly feel like,
- 25:46Speaker 2: to come back to your point, it feels like Phoenie's
- 25:48Speaker 2: taking this one again much like he did last year
- 25:50Speaker 2: by the reins, and it's kind of up to him
- 25:52Speaker 2: where he wants to end up at the end of
- 25:53Speaker 2: the Sprint Cup. But as we learned last year, it's
- 25:57Speaker 2: not just about the Sprint Cuff.
- 26:00Speaker 1: It's not We've got that final series that's happens at
- 26:03Speaker 1: the end of the year. For those who haven't necessarily
- 26:05Speaker 1: been following along, there's all those changes in that drama,
- 26:07Speaker 1: which you guys can relive over on KO at any
- 26:10Speaker 1: time you like. But in Tasmania we saw Toyota had
- 26:15Speaker 1: their first supercars win. That's massive for the brand that's
- 26:18Speaker 1: just stepped in to supercars and Andre Himgartner he won
- 26:22Speaker 1: for BJR. Do you think there's changes the momentum for
- 26:26Speaker 1: Toyota and what they're able to achieve now now that
- 26:29Speaker 1: they've got that first win under their belt. Okay, now
- 26:31Speaker 1: we can go for two, and then we can go
- 26:33Speaker 1: for three, and then ultimately they can be fighting for
- 26:35Speaker 1: that championship.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been a much better first season so far
- 26:40Speaker 2: for Toyota than I expected. Maybe then they expected as well.
- 26:44Speaker 2: And it's not only just that they've clocked up a
- 26:46Speaker 2: few victories now, which plays a big role in that obviously,
- 26:50Speaker 2: and we should acknowledge as well. Chasmust winning on Saturday too,
- 26:53Speaker 2: a bit of a turnaround from really what we've been
- 26:55Speaker 2: seeing for most of the season from the defending champions,
- 26:58Speaker 2: strangely enough outclass by Ryan Wood for a lot of
- 27:01Speaker 2: the year. But then Andre Himgartner, as he said after that,
- 27:03Speaker 2: it's the fact that as well, Toyota is doing better
- 27:06Speaker 2: than Chevrolet is, which is really I think one of
- 27:09Speaker 2: the more remarkable stories of this season, somewhat predictable considering
- 27:12Speaker 2: that if you look at the stats last year, I
- 27:14Speaker 2: think we wrote this on the Fox Sports website, it
- 27:16Speaker 2: really was Triple eight that was doing most of the winning,
- 27:19Speaker 2: almost all of the winning in fact, for Chevrolet, and
- 27:22Speaker 2: them defecting to Ford has completely changed the complexion of
- 27:24Speaker 2: that brand in the sport, and they're scrambling a little
- 27:28Speaker 2: bit to try and figure out how to do that.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Some improved form this weekend from Team eighteen in particular
- 27:32Speaker 2: with some homologation changes, which was positive This is a
- 27:36Speaker 2: very particular track though super short, less than sixty seconds
- 27:38Speaker 2: a lapse, so it's not the perfect test of that.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Should also acknowledge that GM has historically always been very good,
- 27:44Speaker 2: even if Triple eight's been a big part of that
- 27:46Speaker 2: at this track. So we wait and see some more circuits,
- 27:49Speaker 2: but it's the fact that Toyota's come in and has
- 27:51Speaker 2: has beaten GM over the course of however many weekends
- 27:54Speaker 2: we've had so far, four or five rounds is still
- 27:57Speaker 2: distant from Ford. Ford is still really running the show,
- 27:59Speaker 2: but now more wins than what General were just still
- 28:02Speaker 2: waiting for its first win this year more polls, I
- 28:04Speaker 2: think is at four poles to one off the top
- 28:06Speaker 2: of my head, so that's really interesting. There's still a
- 28:09Speaker 2: question mark about Toyota's engine performance, yes, but reliability in
- 28:14Speaker 2: particular didn't have any problems off the top of my
- 28:15Speaker 2: head this weekend, but did in previous weekends. That more
- 28:18Speaker 2: power sensitive tracks we'll see. That's obviously a big question
- 28:21Speaker 2: as we get down the road, places like Bathist even
- 28:23Speaker 2: the ben considering using the long layout of that one.
- 28:26Speaker 2: But I mean, I think if you're Toyota, you're looking
- 28:28Speaker 2: at this and going Wow, this is pretty good. This
- 28:30Speaker 2: is working out a lot better. And in terms of
- 28:32Speaker 2: that championship question, well, the final system means that who possibly,
- 28:35Speaker 2: who knows. As long as you're in the ten, anything
- 28:37Speaker 2: could happen. But realistically, looking at next year, suddenly you think, well,
- 28:41Speaker 2: if you sort out those reliability problems, everything's betted in
- 28:43Speaker 2: a little bit more, next year could look very normal
- 28:46Speaker 2: in the sense of you can be right up there.
- 28:48Speaker 2: We know Walkinghaw is a great team, obviously won the
- 28:50Speaker 2: title last year with chats Why not.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. You always need that first year to iron
- 28:56Speaker 1: out those like teething problems you see in anything. But
- 28:58Speaker 1: for them to already be on top step this little
- 29:01Speaker 1: into the season so far, I think is a phenomenal
- 29:04Speaker 1: confidence boost for them and overall with what they're bringing
- 29:07Speaker 1: to the Australian Supercars Championship. So we've got the positives
- 29:11Speaker 1: from Andre and Toyota, and then we go over to
- 29:15Speaker 1: the man who I thought might have been a little
- 29:17Speaker 1: bit higher up in the standings. We've got Brodie Casseki
- 29:20Speaker 1: and he's suddenly just fallen apart in what seems like
- 29:23Speaker 1: a few races. This is kind of brutal to ask
- 29:26Speaker 1: but do you think his title fine is basically done already.
- 29:30Speaker 2: I think Sprint Cup he's getting close. But then by
- 29:33Speaker 2: saying that that kind of means the only people in
- 29:35Speaker 2: content in a Brocken map, which doesn't seem right because
- 29:39Speaker 2: we are only halfway through it. But I think that
- 29:41Speaker 2: almost that kind of realistically, is it? Like that's where
- 29:43Speaker 2: the form is both for the drivers. I don't think
- 29:46Speaker 2: Brodie's in too bad form, but there's still this like
- 29:50Speaker 2: he hasn't clicked that final one percent with Dji yet,
- 29:53Speaker 2: Like there's still a little bit to gain from that partnership. Look,
- 29:56Speaker 2: some of the points loss have clearly not been his fault.
- 29:58Speaker 2: At the previous round, the incident with Mostard lost points
- 30:01Speaker 2: I wasn't his fault. Clearly. This weekend Sunday's pace just
- 30:04Speaker 2: totally disappeared. They don't really understand why. They know why
- 30:07Speaker 2: the pit stop was slow, that was refueling issue, but
- 30:09Speaker 2: the pace just disappearing is where that like final one
- 30:12Speaker 2: percent of can you do this consistently? Just remains to
- 30:15Speaker 2: be answered. But you've been pretty good in the season
- 30:17Speaker 2: before that. But I mean to come back to even
- 30:20Speaker 2: where we started with brock is he out of the championship.
- 30:22Speaker 2: He he just has to be there at the end
- 30:24Speaker 2: of the year, doesn't he. That's the only important thing.
- 30:26Speaker 2: And I can't see him dropping out of the top ten.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I mean, the gap to the gap down to tenth
- 30:29Speaker 2: is pretty massive now and he's actually mostedt who's sitting tenth,
- 30:32Speaker 2: which is remarkable. But Brodie's already nearly three hundred points
- 30:35Speaker 2: clear of tenth place, which you'd think. I mean, notwithstanding
- 30:38Speaker 2: anything can happened in the durance races considering how big
- 30:40Speaker 2: the points are there. But he'll be in the tent.
- 30:43Speaker 2: I'm confident he'll be in the tent. We also know
- 30:44Speaker 2: he's pretty good at least at the Gold Coast. That's
- 30:46Speaker 2: where I think he won his first DJR race there
- 30:48Speaker 2: memory serves a couple years ago, so you know, we
- 30:51Speaker 2: know he's gonna be good there. And then you know
- 30:53Speaker 2: we've got Adelaide and Sandown after that. So finals, No,
- 30:56Speaker 2: he's got a lot of time. You know, as again
- 30:58Speaker 2: Most and walking Shaw. What they were known last year
- 31:01Speaker 2: WU proved is that you can focus on those races
- 31:04Speaker 2: as long as you get into the top ten, then
- 31:06Speaker 2: just be really good at the last three and you
- 31:08Speaker 2: can win the title, so I think he's very much
- 31:10Speaker 2: in it, and we know how intimidating is on track,
- 31:12Speaker 2: and I'd love to see a Feenie Casteki battle and
- 31:15Speaker 2: Matt Pain in there as well, obviously, because I just
- 31:18Speaker 2: think that, I mean, the way Kostecki does his business
- 31:20Speaker 2: is obviously so intimidating, but I think Phoene's kind of
- 31:22Speaker 2: taken a bit of a step in that direction. I'd
- 31:24Speaker 2: love to see them really fight extensively. But I think
- 31:27Speaker 2: they are certainly emerging as the top three title contenders,
- 31:30Speaker 2: aren't they. I think they're the ones we're going to
- 31:31Speaker 2: be keeping an hour and by the time we get
- 31:32Speaker 2: to the end of the season.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I think this was, like I said in the intro,
- 31:36Speaker 1: so because are really bringing it this year. We're bringing
- 31:38Speaker 1: They're seeing more of that on track action, elbows out,
- 31:42Speaker 1: wheel to wheel stuff, and that's what the sports needs
- 31:44Speaker 1: and that's what us as fans we love because we
- 31:46Speaker 1: want to be on the edge of our seat watching
- 31:48Speaker 1: these guys. But you mentioned there earlier. Darwin is the
- 31:52Speaker 1: next race, so there's a little break, but supercars headed
- 31:55Speaker 1: to Darwin for the triple crown from the nineteenth to
- 31:57Speaker 1: the twenty first of June and that is also going
- 32:00Speaker 1: to be live on KO and just for our listeners
- 32:05Speaker 1: if they want to stay upstate with any of the
- 32:06Speaker 1: news that you guys have been talking about so far
- 32:09Speaker 1: with a Formula one also because you guys can do
- 32:11Speaker 1: so on our website at Fox sports dot com dot
- 32:14Speaker 1: au forward slash Motorsport to read any of Michael and
- 32:17Speaker 1: Matt's articles over there. But that pretty much wraps up
- 32:21Speaker 1: four wheel side of things. Now. One thing, Michael, you
- 32:24Speaker 1: have the esteem dignity of hosting the Move of the Week,
- 32:30Speaker 1: no pressure, but there's been a lot of action, So
- 32:32Speaker 1: come on, give us, give us the goods.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Yes, move with the Week of course, brought to you
- 32:37Speaker 2: by Shaddons as it is every week. And you know what,
- 32:39Speaker 2: I'm almost a little bit disappointed because I've Matt, I've
- 32:41Speaker 2: come to enjoy when we do this segment and there's
- 32:44Speaker 2: been no racing as there often has been over the
- 32:46Speaker 2: last month. Particularly Matt's very good at coming up with
- 32:49Speaker 2: plentier left field moves of the week. I'm willing to
- 32:53Speaker 2: give you the fields again, Matt, because we do have
- 32:55Speaker 2: plenty to choose from this weekend, but I'm hoping that
- 32:58Speaker 2: it's not just on track.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Unfortunately it is this time because I've actually got something
- 33:02Speaker 3: to talk about on track. I've had to get super
- 33:04Speaker 3: lateral this year because this Formula One thing where they
- 33:07Speaker 3: just like don't race for a month at a time
- 33:08Speaker 3: has been kind of challenging. But I'm going to I'm
- 33:12Speaker 3: going to go for the old guys. Still got it,
- 33:15Speaker 3: I think move for the week this week seeing Lewis
- 33:18Speaker 3: Hamilton get to the best result of his Ferrari career
- 33:21Speaker 3: by overtaking old mate Max Fistapp and towards the end
- 33:24Speaker 3: of the Canadian Grand Prix in a clearly better car.
- 33:27Speaker 3: But it was nice to see. I thought it was
- 33:30Speaker 3: just summed up the whole Lewis weekend for me in
- 33:32Speaker 3: that he was energized. He was back to sort of
- 33:34Speaker 3: Lewis in his happy place and everyone was smiling and
- 33:37Speaker 3: his mom was there. He had a great result, you know,
- 33:39Speaker 3: SkySports mentioned that one hundred and seventy five times. But
- 33:42Speaker 3: it was nice to see and energized Lewis Hamilton towards
- 33:45Speaker 3: the front end of a race that, let's be honest,
- 33:47Speaker 3: everyone was playing four second place once Geord Russell's car
- 33:50Speaker 3: broke down, not thirty laps in or whatever it was.
- 33:52Speaker 3: But to see Hamilton like this, and you have to
- 33:55Speaker 3: keep reminding yourself at the age and stage of his
- 33:58Speaker 3: career that he's in and the act that you know,
- 34:01Speaker 3: the Ferrari move hasn't really borne the fruit for him
- 34:03Speaker 3: yet that he and we thought that it would as
- 34:06Speaker 3: as a spectacle in the sport. But I guess the
- 34:09Speaker 3: big takeaway for me, maybe the move of the week
- 34:11Speaker 3: is him not getting in the simulator before Montreal because
- 34:14Speaker 3: he said he didn't. He said he didn't bother getting
- 34:16Speaker 3: in the simulator before Montreal, and he's gone out and
- 34:18Speaker 3: Uncorkedy's best Ferrari performance yet. So perhaps that's the move
- 34:21Speaker 3: of the week after all. But as as it normally
- 34:24Speaker 3: happens with this particular section here, I'm the one that
- 34:27Speaker 3: goes off the reservation a little bit with whatever it
- 34:29Speaker 3: is that I choose. Michael is usually far better at
- 34:31Speaker 3: this and far more sensible. So I am going to
- 34:33Speaker 3: pass the ball to you, and nothing left field.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Please, I'll keep it straight forward. I was going I
- 34:43Speaker 2: was thinking of trying to think of a left field one,
- 34:44Speaker 2: but you know what, there's plenty of good racing. I
- 34:46Speaker 2: was going to choose something between Antonelli and Russell, but
- 34:49Speaker 2: I think we've talked about them plenty, so I'm going
- 34:51Speaker 2: to go with speaking of old mates, Oscar Piastre making
- 34:54Speaker 2: that actually the reverse. I guess the old guy's still
- 34:57Speaker 2: got it. In the sprint, it was Ferrari pace fading
- 35:01Speaker 2: a little bit the end, Oscar trying to get pasted him.
- 35:03Speaker 2: But it was a move through the chicane, a final chicane,
- 35:06Speaker 2: which is such a high risk move. You don't make
- 35:09Speaker 2: that move there if you're not confident. You clearly had
- 35:11Speaker 2: the feeling in the car. Hamilton also showed him the respect,
- 35:14Speaker 2: which you absolutely need trying to pull off a move
- 35:16Speaker 2: like that. You could contrast that to I guess neither
- 35:19Speaker 2: Antonelli nor Russell managing to make a move on each
- 35:22Speaker 2: or the other through that chicane. How much respect is
- 35:24Speaker 2: the interesting question, but I love to see that. I
- 35:26Speaker 2: mean ask you didn't have very many highlights at all
- 35:28Speaker 2: this weekend, sadly, nor did McLaren have too many, but
- 35:32Speaker 2: I enjoyed his contribution to the highlight reel there one
- 35:35Speaker 2: though I think the tragically television cameras didn't catch live,
- 35:40Speaker 2: which is another good reason to bring it up here.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Let's go the reverse move of the week the TV
- 35:46Speaker 3: production of the Canadian Grand Prix, like Oscar Piastree moves
- 35:50Speaker 3: that went wrong when he clattered into Alex Albon early
- 35:52Speaker 3: in the race. I think it took us about forty
- 35:54Speaker 3: five minutes to get a replay of that. And yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 3: I don't know what was going on there. We're just
- 35:58Speaker 3: fully asleep at the wheel there. I don't know. There
- 36:00Speaker 3: was a lot of things that seem to just not
- 36:02Speaker 3: get shown in the action main race on the Monday morning,
- 36:05Speaker 3: or shown dramatically later than they should have been for
- 36:08Speaker 3: a live sporting event. So I'm not quite sure what
- 36:10Speaker 3: was going on there. But yeah, when you when you
- 36:12Speaker 3: mentioned oskopyastri off the top there, I thought, oh God,
- 36:14Speaker 3: don't tell me easy to start talking about the Alex
- 36:16Speaker 3: Albod move, because yeah, that was that was that was
- 36:20Speaker 3: That was a move, but that was not the move
- 36:22Speaker 3: of the week. Yes, it was a move of the week,
- 36:24Speaker 3: but not the it was. It was a move of
- 36:26Speaker 3: someone's week, but not that one.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Yes, I don't know if you want to contribute a
- 36:30Speaker 2: left field suggestion here, Anise, and I don't know if
- 36:33Speaker 2: you've come up with any observations from drivers doing something
- 36:36Speaker 2: a miss off the track that might be a candidate here.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Look, I'm going to go against every female who's a
- 36:43Speaker 1: fan of motorsport and I'm going to I'm going fully
- 36:46Speaker 1: off track with this one. But this is probably not
- 36:49Speaker 1: the podcast, but the Lewis Hamilton Kim Kardashian situation is
- 36:53Speaker 1: not doing anything for me. I'm just going to throw
- 36:55Speaker 1: that out there.
- 36:57Speaker 3: That we haven't contribut You did that at all this year,
- 37:03Speaker 3: so you and I saw not in this space. I mean,
- 37:06Speaker 3: Nita's already brought something to the Move of the Week
- 37:08Speaker 3: that one hundred and nine previous episodes have gone nowhere near.
- 37:11Speaker 3: So I'm impressed with this. You're invited back, Grinita.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Thank you so much. But I'm sure the comments below
- 37:17Speaker 1: on YouTube and not going to unnecessarily agree with me
- 37:20Speaker 1: on that. But look, you know what we've had Lewis.
- 37:24Speaker 1: We've had him at the Mecca, or we've had him
- 37:26Speaker 1: rocking up to the Canadian Grand Prix on a bike,
- 37:28Speaker 1: like there's all these things that I go, Okay, he's
- 37:30Speaker 1: Lewis Hamilton, but there's this line that I'm during, but hey,
- 37:33Speaker 1: maybe she's the one who's bringing this good luck at
- 37:35Speaker 1: the moment. Maybe she's helping him. So if that's the case,
- 37:38Speaker 1: go Kim, keep going.
- 37:40Speaker 3: I just don't have absolutely nothing to contribute to this
- 37:43Speaker 3: conversation at this point.
- 37:44Speaker 1: I'm so sorry you guys. I'll go back to being
- 37:46Speaker 1: someone someone someone up.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Eventually someone had to bring it up, but it certainly
- 37:51Speaker 3: wasn't going to be anyway. Moving on.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Well, let's move on now, because we do have more
- 37:55Speaker 2: racing this weekend, not on four wheels, but onto is
- 37:58Speaker 2: the Italian motorcy called Grand Prix in Belllord, one of
- 38:02Speaker 2: the greatest circuits in the world, one of the most picturesque.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Wi Shaw almost someday that there'd be another obviously not
- 38:08Speaker 2: mass health crisis, but I'd love to see FORMUDA one
- 38:10Speaker 2: back there for any reason at all. But Moto GP
- 38:12Speaker 2: against the Honor, and what a great race it will be.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Before we get on to what we're expecting from this weekend,
- 38:17Speaker 2: some updates I think people will be interested to hear about. Obviously,
- 38:21Speaker 2: the last couple of races we've had really quite a
- 38:23Speaker 2: spate of serious injuries. In Moto GP. We had Mark
- 38:25Speaker 2: Marquez in Lemon, then Alex Marquez and Joanzaka and Barcelona.
- 38:29Speaker 2: What's the latest on these recoveries, Matt, because it seems
- 38:31Speaker 2: like it's going to be pretty varied about when we're
- 38:33Speaker 2: going to see any or even all three of these
- 38:35Speaker 2: writers back one day.
- 38:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, as far as we know and
- 38:39Speaker 3: at time of recording, it looks like Mark Marquez is
- 38:41Speaker 3: the most will certainly the most likely of those three
- 38:43Speaker 3: to participate at Magello this weekend. Confirmation of his arrival
- 38:48Speaker 3: on the starting group. We're not one hundred percent sure yet,
- 38:50Speaker 3: but it's tracking in the correct direction. Alex Marquez and
- 38:54Speaker 3: Jean Zarco, they are going to be a while, I think.
- 38:56Speaker 3: I mean, we've got a back to back here with
- 38:57Speaker 3: Magello and Hungary talk about the best circuit in motor
- 39:00Speaker 3: and the worst Insane Fortnite. But that's fine. But Alex, Look,
- 39:04Speaker 3: Alex Marquez had a colbone fracture which was plated and
- 39:08Speaker 3: also had a fracture to the C seven vertebrae. So
- 39:12Speaker 3: basically one the one that you stick your thumb in
- 39:14Speaker 3: right at the back of your neck if you're old
- 39:15Speaker 3: and you've got a saw back like me, So that's
- 39:17Speaker 3: the one. It's quite it's quite, it's quite satisfying. Try
- 39:21Speaker 3: it at home. It's quite satisfying. So he's got a
- 39:25Speaker 3: fracture there, so that's going to keep him out for
- 39:27Speaker 3: a while. The Zarko won. As much as the accident
- 39:30Speaker 3: wasn't as just abjectly violent as the Marquez one, the
- 39:34Speaker 3: Zarko one's trickier because we saw that he got his
- 39:38Speaker 3: left leg caught between the rear the seat unit and
- 39:41Speaker 3: the tire of Pecabana's bike because it went through the
- 39:43Speaker 3: gravel there it turned one at Cattaloonya. There's still so
- 39:46Speaker 3: much swelling there in that knee that they almost need
- 39:48Speaker 3: to wait a bit longer for that to subside to
- 39:50Speaker 3: really look at the extent of the damage, because you're
- 39:53Speaker 3: thinking it's going to be it's probably a media in there.
- 39:56Speaker 3: There's all sorts going on with that knee, and you
- 39:58Speaker 3: do wonder, and I don't want to get to doom
- 40:02Speaker 3: and gloom here. But he's already contracted for twenty twenty seven, right,
- 40:05Speaker 3: he's also the oldest guy in motor GP. He does
- 40:08Speaker 3: not need to rush back to prove himself to get
- 40:11Speaker 3: a contract for next year. He already has one of those,
- 40:14Speaker 3: and so perhaps he would probably be better off prioritizing
- 40:18Speaker 3: just walking a normal freedom range of movement rather than
- 40:22Speaker 3: trying to be back in three races four races. This
- 40:24Speaker 3: strikes me as a really long absence because we still
- 40:27Speaker 3: don't completely know the extent of the damage yet. But
- 40:30Speaker 3: the good thing from his perspective, he's not a championship
- 40:33Speaker 3: contender anyway. He has a contract for next year. There's
- 40:35Speaker 3: no need for him to rush back. I guess the
- 40:38Speaker 3: question for Honda Rena, I don't know what you've heard
- 40:41Speaker 3: about this, but who do they bring in? Like they
- 40:44Speaker 3: they've got a million guys as test writers, Elisias Bargo
- 40:47Speaker 3: is the only guy that's probably motor GP speed and
- 40:50Speaker 3: relevant at the moment to bring in. He's also coming
- 40:52Speaker 3: back off his own accident because he had a pretty
- 40:54Speaker 3: major off in a private test at Sepang where he
- 40:57Speaker 3: did some damage to his back. So I'm not sure
- 40:59Speaker 3: if you've read in the last couple of days. He
- 41:01Speaker 3: strikes me as the most logical replacement, but it might
- 41:03Speaker 3: need to be for a while, and I do wonder
- 41:06Speaker 3: how that's good effector in.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I mean, they do also have Takanakagami, but he is
- 41:11Speaker 1: still focused heavily on the eight fifties, and like you said,
- 41:14Speaker 1: I don't necessarily think he's bike fit, And that's such
- 41:16Speaker 1: a crucial key when it comes to these test writers
- 41:19Speaker 1: or fill in writers jumping in with regards to Zako.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Just for let listeners at home, anybody who understands a
- 41:28Speaker 1: ligament injury think maybe if footy or netble or something
- 41:32Speaker 1: like that. You know, it's not like a bone where
- 41:34Speaker 1: it's just healed in six weeks. It can take a
- 41:36Speaker 1: lot longer, or it can fully affect a career. That's
- 41:39Speaker 1: speaking from personal history with my brother and his nine
- 41:43Speaker 1: is very very similar there, so we know that that
- 41:46Speaker 1: technology is there, But like you said, it's a case
- 41:48Speaker 1: of they actually need the situation to calm down itself
- 41:51Speaker 1: before they can actually analyze what's going on then start
- 41:53Speaker 1: the rehab process you mentioned you know he's got that
- 41:57Speaker 1: contract signed for next year. I think it's a case
- 41:59Speaker 1: of now Zako almost putting this shit out of his mind,
- 42:02Speaker 1: coming back when he feels ready. If there's anything we
- 42:05Speaker 1: know from from like Mark Marquez, Joge Martin is this
- 42:10Speaker 1: seems to be the common denominator. Come back when you already,
- 42:12Speaker 1: don't come back when you want to come back, you know,
- 42:15Speaker 1: so I think that would be the advice that he's
- 42:18Speaker 1: currently being given. But then we're going to the other side,
- 42:21Speaker 1: We're going Mark Marquez. There's all these rumors right now
- 42:23Speaker 1: on social media saying, well, his names come up on
- 42:26Speaker 1: the entry list for Magello. So he hasn't said anything
- 42:29Speaker 1: on his socials. We've spoke about it, how much he's
- 42:31Speaker 1: posting at the moment of Phisio and look what I
- 42:34Speaker 1: can do with my shoulder, Look how heavy weights I
- 42:37Speaker 1: can lift that. I think it would not surprise me
- 42:41Speaker 1: if we do see Mark Marquez back this weekend. But
- 42:44Speaker 1: then what does that mean, Like, what's he what's he
- 42:46Speaker 1: going to be able to achieve at ju Caddie end,
- 42:49Speaker 1: especially this race for du.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Caddi is yeah, yeah, I don't want to leinker on
- 42:56Speaker 3: the Marqueess thing for too long because it's unknown and
- 42:58Speaker 3: it could all change by the time people listen to this.
- 42:59Speaker 3: But it strikes me the fact that we do have
- 43:02Speaker 3: a doubleheader here, we're at two tracks the next two
- 43:04Speaker 3: weeks where he won last year. This strikes me as
- 43:08Speaker 3: he's a long way behind in the championship, but it's
- 43:11Speaker 3: a strange championship and that you've got manufacturers and positions.
- 43:14Speaker 3: They're not ordinarily there. The Ducati is not quite the
- 43:17Speaker 3: bike it was last year, but he will be confident
- 43:19Speaker 3: that he's the guy that could take it back into
- 43:21Speaker 3: championship contention. He just needs to get through Migello and Balloton,
- 43:26Speaker 3: score some points, not now rightly go for race wins,
- 43:30Speaker 3: but just chip away, get some more points in the
- 43:32Speaker 3: bank here. Then you have a week to reset. I
- 43:35Speaker 3: think sitting out for these two back to backs would
- 43:37Speaker 3: almost put the championship in the impossible category for him,
- 43:40Speaker 3: if he can get back and just get something out
- 43:42Speaker 3: of it and not hurt himself. Again. We knew he
- 43:45Speaker 3: was going in to get the shoulder done anyway after Cattalogia.
- 43:48Speaker 3: That was planned in the week off, and he just
- 43:49Speaker 3: brought it forward a week after he broke his foot
- 43:52Speaker 3: at Leamont, So I would be very surprised if he's
- 43:55Speaker 3: not there. But man, I don't know how you go
- 43:58Speaker 3: to somewhere like Migello and say I'll just ride at
- 44:00Speaker 3: nine tenths, because that is not a nine tenths racetrack,
- 44:03Speaker 3: is it.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Well, I'm just thinking as well. Lead test writer, as
- 44:06Speaker 1: you mentioned there, say if Mark and Alex are both out. Well,
- 44:09Speaker 1: there's only one Mikaylee Piro who scheduled in. Oh thumbs up. Hey,
- 44:12Speaker 1: guys scheduled in to fill in for Alex Marquez. Are
- 44:17Speaker 1: they going to call Nikolo Bulliga to come back and
- 44:19Speaker 1: ride for Mark on the factory bike? Like, how is
- 44:22Speaker 1: that going to work as a whole? As well?
- 44:24Speaker 3: There's a clashes and there with Superbike, so it's cut
- 44:26Speaker 3: even they can't even bring Bullivar. You're back in for
- 44:28Speaker 3: this weekend, So yeah, I guess Mikauyley Piro will be
- 44:31Speaker 3: there either in some Grassini overalls or factory Ducati overalls
- 44:35Speaker 3: and riding very very slowly at the back because I
- 44:37Speaker 3: last that is Macauley Piro's a lot these days. He
- 44:39Speaker 3: is a man on a bike racing around a track
- 44:41Speaker 3: just to fill the grid up. But yeah, it's it's
- 44:44Speaker 3: funny with Ducatti and I am going to ride about
- 44:46Speaker 3: this for Fox Sports dot Com. That are you during
- 44:47Speaker 3: the week in that Magello was just you know, you
- 44:50Speaker 3: think of the success that bad Yaya had there and
- 44:52Speaker 3: Marquez last year, and it's been a Ducatti festival for
- 44:55Speaker 3: the best part of the last five years. Really different
- 44:58Speaker 3: picture this year, and yeah, I'm sure we'll get on
- 45:00Speaker 3: to Magello at a sec but they're the picture is
- 45:02Speaker 3: really really different this year because they're beaten up and
- 45:04Speaker 3: they're not informed and they don't have the great pike either.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's going to be interesting from the Mark Marquez angle.
- 45:11Speaker 2: We should move on from that. But it's a good
- 45:14Speaker 2: week potentially for my favorite praise in Moto GP. Writer
- 45:17Speaker 2: declared fit. But let's move on from old mate Ben
- 45:21Speaker 2: Screw's Mark Marquez and look at the Italian field at
- 45:24Speaker 2: the Italian Grand Prix. Obviously in Italian leading the championship
- 45:28Speaker 2: with Marco Betzeki didn't have a great weekend in Barcelona though,
- 45:30Speaker 2: so there's that element of it. Who did have a
- 45:32Speaker 2: great weekend was Pabi in chan Antonio who won the
- 45:34Speaker 2: Grand Prix, consolidated third on the title standings, and then
- 45:37Speaker 2: as you mentioned, Matt Peco Banyai also got on the
- 45:39Speaker 2: podium in Barcelona. No small achievement, but historically has been
- 45:43Speaker 2: quite good. In Migello. Italians always have a habit of
- 45:47Speaker 2: lifting for the home Grand Prix. How big a role
- 45:50Speaker 2: is that going to play between these riders and deciding
- 45:52Speaker 2: whether or not they're going to get all of the podium,
- 45:54Speaker 2: and what do you think about their prospects generally here.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Yeah, it's interesting the Bazechi store, simply because he's doing
- 46:01Speaker 3: things this year that we've never seen him do before.
- 46:03Speaker 3: So I'm not really playing a heap of attention to
- 46:06Speaker 3: pass history with him, because I think he's completely rewriting
- 46:09Speaker 3: his career this year. Clearly got a very very good bike.
- 46:14Speaker 3: Whether he's able to get that to the real sharp
- 46:17Speaker 3: end at somewhere like Magello. I still I wouldn't say
- 46:20Speaker 3: I have my reservations about him necessarily, but I just
- 46:22Speaker 3: wonder about the combination of bike rider, crowd, atmosphere, all
- 46:26Speaker 3: of that. The one I'm actually most confident about, bizarrely,
- 46:30Speaker 3: of those three that you just mentioned there is actually
- 46:32Speaker 3: de jan Antonio is in fantastic form. He's very very
- 46:35Speaker 3: good at Magello, knock Banyairo off the podium last year
- 46:39Speaker 3: when that bike was clearly not really up to it
- 46:40Speaker 3: and he was not in the form that he's in now.
- 46:43Speaker 3: He is the best Ducatti rider on the grid this year.
- 46:46Speaker 3: And that's not a sentence I thought we would have said,
- 46:48Speaker 3: given that you've got Mark Marquez, you've got Peco Banay,
- 46:51Speaker 3: Alex Marquees was second in the championship last year. There's
- 46:54Speaker 3: a lot of depth in that Ducati stable. He wouldn't
- 46:57Speaker 3: have been the guy that I would have predicted would
- 46:58Speaker 3: have been their leading rider after six rounds, and there's
- 47:00Speaker 3: all sorts of storylines to go with that, of course,
- 47:02Speaker 3: but he is in really, really good form right now.
- 47:06Speaker 3: It's a track where he goes well at and having
- 47:10Speaker 3: got the win at cataloonya bizarre as that race was,
- 47:13Speaker 3: there's no longer this well, you haven't had a win
- 47:15Speaker 3: since the end of twenty twenty three. Question. I expect
- 47:18Speaker 3: he'll be super super strong. You may remember going back
- 47:21Speaker 3: he took an absolutely out of the box pole position
- 47:24Speaker 3: there in his rookie season back in twenty two, where
- 47:28Speaker 3: no one expected that from him. So he is super
- 47:31Speaker 3: rapid there, and of those three that you just mentioned,
- 47:33Speaker 3: he'd be the guy that I'd be most confident of
- 47:35Speaker 3: probably having the best showing this weekend.
- 47:38Speaker 1: I think I'm so glad you mentioned twenty twenty two
- 47:40Speaker 1: because I was going to bring that up the year
- 47:42Speaker 1: he took the pole. He took the win an Italian manufacturer, Okay,
- 47:45Speaker 1: it was Grissini, no Promac, no Grissini Grissini.
- 47:51Speaker 3: I remember watching the Purple for Purple the color.
- 47:54Speaker 1: But I think the fact that there's Italian, Italian Italian that
- 47:58Speaker 1: is definitely going to be on the cars today. And
- 48:00Speaker 1: then imagine if it's the VR forty six duo, the
- 48:03Speaker 1: VR forty six with Antonio, who's living that. I mean
- 48:08Speaker 1: for the listeners and people who maybe don't fall inim
- 48:11Speaker 1: a gp as in depth. This is the round where
- 48:14Speaker 1: we get to have the liveries, the exciting liveries, the
- 48:17Speaker 1: like last year you Caddy did something. Renaissance is very interesting,
- 48:22Speaker 1: da Vinci.
- 48:23Speaker 3: Last year it was yeah, it was, That's what it was.
- 48:27Speaker 1: That one was rubbish. But the year before Peco Banyaia
- 48:30Speaker 1: with the kiss theme Helman and the Blue and the
- 48:33Speaker 1: was phenomenal. But I reckon VR forty six. We know
- 48:36Speaker 1: they're going to be on for a livery as well
- 48:38Speaker 1: this year, so I agree with you, digr if that happens, phenomenal.
- 48:42Speaker 1: But also imagine Marco but Zeki here with a privier
- 48:46Speaker 1: winning an Italian track. Look, I'm already in the hands.
- 48:49Speaker 3: You're already yeah, it would be it would be a
- 48:53Speaker 3: real changing of the guard. Related there's two things I
- 48:55Speaker 3: love about this Grand Prix. It's the best TV shot
- 48:58Speaker 3: of the year on the first lap of the race
- 49:00Speaker 3: where the bikes all come over the crest and appear
- 49:03Speaker 3: into view after they come off the start line, and
- 49:05Speaker 3: then they all fan out to try and get through
- 49:08Speaker 3: Term one, which is just a phenomenal TV shot at
- 49:10Speaker 3: any time. That's fantastic. The other thing I love about
- 49:13Speaker 3: this track as a man who likes quarters that have
- 49:17Speaker 3: good names, and Michael Amonato does not. Michael Lemonato likes
- 49:20Speaker 3: turn one, two, three, four and five. I am very
- 49:23Speaker 3: much a fan of Casanova Savelli Arabato. Let's just go
- 49:27Speaker 3: through all of the absolutely iconic corner names of Migello.
- 49:33Speaker 3: I love this place. And one of the things that
- 49:36Speaker 3: I loved so much about the bizarre twenty twenty Formula
- 49:39Speaker 3: one calendar that we had, even though it was for
- 49:41Speaker 3: the wrong reasons, is that I always had this thing.
- 49:43Speaker 3: I wanted Formula one cast of race around Magello because
- 49:45Speaker 3: I just thought it would be an incredible combination of
- 49:48Speaker 3: machinery and performance and race track because it is a
- 49:51Speaker 3: breath taking racetrack and yeah, some of the best TV
- 49:54Speaker 3: shots of the year, and if you get an Italian
- 49:56Speaker 3: in the mix for a race win there you mentioned
- 49:59Speaker 3: before about the VF four forty six side of it,
- 50:00Speaker 3: how many yellow flares will be let off? If did
- 50:03Speaker 3: You is able to win on Sunday, you will not
- 50:04Speaker 3: be able to It'd just be this haze of yellow
- 50:07Speaker 3: floating across the Tuscan Hills. It'll be fantastic, Like for.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Everyone at home, you know, I always watch it, watch
- 50:13Speaker 1: the Grand Prix at home, watch it on Fox and
- 50:15Speaker 1: KO like and get to Fillipilon if you can, to
- 50:18Speaker 1: support our Aussies. But if there's one Grand Prix that
- 50:20Speaker 1: you know absolutely can make it too, honestly, go to Migello.
- 50:26Speaker 1: The vibes, the atmosphere, the intensity. Actually there's probably three harassed,
- 50:31Speaker 1: Laman and Majello. But there's just something about hearing those
- 50:35Speaker 1: monogp bikes roar down that that's straight, like you said,
- 50:38Speaker 1: at three hundred and sixty kilometers per hour. We try
- 50:41Speaker 1: and post clips of it in socials. It just does
- 50:43Speaker 1: not do it justice. But to see these machines up
- 50:45Speaker 1: close and personal and see what they do is like,
- 50:48Speaker 1: I got goose bumps. It's it's insane. So yeah, I
- 50:52Speaker 1: love it. But if you can't be there, tune in.
- 50:55Speaker 2: You can't go to Migello. You can always go to
- 50:58Speaker 2: Balloton Park after that. Now we've got to very briefly
- 51:00Speaker 2: before we wrap up, of course, to Australian corner. Jack
- 51:05Speaker 2: Miller and Yamaha. This being such a top speedchack, as
- 51:08Speaker 2: you said, it's no good. But you talked last week
- 51:11Speaker 2: obviously on the podcast and Matt you also wrote for
- 51:13Speaker 2: the website that Jack Miller's futures on I think to
- 51:16Speaker 2: put it like the extremely shaky ground at the moment
- 51:18Speaker 2: in Moto GP, and if he does happen to cling
- 51:20Speaker 2: onto a Motor GP seed, it's not going to be
- 51:22Speaker 2: a Yamaha. What does every race mean now for Jack?
- 51:25Speaker 2: Is it all crunch races? Is more about now gliding
- 51:29Speaker 2: to perhaps the end of his Motor GP career this season.
- 51:33Speaker 3: I would say there crunch races him potentially trying to
- 51:36Speaker 3: get a good ride in another series for next year.
- 51:39Speaker 3: It feels like to me the Motor GP doors closed
- 51:42Speaker 3: through a look partially faulted Jackson, partially a faulted the
- 51:46Speaker 3: machinery you mentioned before, the Yamaha straight line speed deficit.
- 51:50Speaker 3: They may as well start the coming out of the
- 51:52Speaker 3: final quarter now, like literally as we're speaking, because they
- 51:55Speaker 3: might get to turn white ahead of any other bike
- 51:56Speaker 3: on the grid right now, it's going to be a
- 51:58Speaker 3: massive struggle for them. I always come armed with a
- 52:00Speaker 3: stat for you. If you're looking for Miller optimism corner,
- 52:03Speaker 3: this is it. This is the worst track of every
- 52:06Speaker 3: racetrack that's been on his career, on the grid for
- 52:09Speaker 3: his entire career. He has scored twenty five total points
- 52:11Speaker 3: in Bajello in his career. Unbelievably, it's a pretty grim
- 52:15Speaker 3: track for Jack, even on a particularly good bike, and
- 52:17Speaker 3: not certainly not a twenty twenty six Yamaha. But look
- 52:20Speaker 3: in terms of where this goes for the future, it
- 52:22Speaker 3: does very much feel like this is going to be
- 52:25Speaker 3: the final season. It's hard to see how any of
- 52:28Speaker 3: the other seats that might come up here are going
- 52:30Speaker 3: to swing his way. Something pretty dramatic would have to happen,
- 52:33Speaker 3: but all the reports coming out of Spain suggests that
- 52:35Speaker 3: Eas sant Guavara is going to come up from Moto
- 52:37Speaker 3: II to take that final seat within YAMAHAF for next year.
- 52:40Speaker 3: We discussed the last week's show that it's probably the
- 52:42Speaker 3: right time to blood a Motor two rookie for next year.
- 52:46Speaker 3: And you do wonder if this is sort of Jack's
- 52:49Speaker 3: sign off tour of Moto GP and hopefully something becomes
- 52:53Speaker 3: of getting into the World Superbikes Padic and doing very
- 52:55Speaker 3: well there, which I think he will do. But it
- 52:58Speaker 3: does feel like the journey's getting to the end of
- 53:00Speaker 3: the beginning.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Let's say, I'm really curious though, to see with what
- 53:06Speaker 1: Jack's achieved so far this time coming over to Yamaha
- 53:09Speaker 1: with the development side, I'm curious to see if he
- 53:12Speaker 1: doesn't end up becoming a test writer postically working alongside
- 53:16Speaker 1: or Gusto Fernandez at Yamaha or something like this, you know,
- 53:19Speaker 1: to really keep developing that bike, if that's something he's
- 53:23Speaker 1: interested in. If anybody knows races, you know that they
- 53:27Speaker 1: just want to go and keep racing, like to make
- 53:29Speaker 1: them stop is like pulling teeth. So it also would
- 53:32Speaker 1: not surprise me if he does go to World Superbikes,
- 53:34Speaker 1: and especially now that he is getting older. And it's
- 53:38Speaker 1: funny to say because he's in his early thirties, right,
- 53:40Speaker 1: but there's the old age for a Moto GP writer.
- 53:43Speaker 1: But that's not to say we don't have those up
- 53:45Speaker 1: and comers because we spoke about it on the pod
- 53:48Speaker 1: and something we regularly try and promote center ageis he's
- 53:51Speaker 1: our next in line to come to Moto GP. We've
- 53:53Speaker 1: got Joel Kelso hopefully stepping up. We've got so many
- 53:56Speaker 1: Aussies over here in the European Championships as well progressing through,
- 54:00Speaker 1: especially with the Talent Cup. So as bittersweet as it
- 54:03Speaker 1: is to not have Jack on the grid, if that's
- 54:06Speaker 1: the case for twenty twenty seven, I think we're still
- 54:08Speaker 1: going to be in good hands because we've got that
- 54:10Speaker 1: Ossie flag that's going to be represented on the world
- 54:13Speaker 1: stage no matter what. If we go to the Yamasi
- 54:16Speaker 1: Yamaha side of things, and for this weekend, I can
- 54:18Speaker 1: guarantee you Fabia Couaduro will be wearing some form of
- 54:21Speaker 1: a pearl necklace and he will definitely be frustrated on
- 54:24Speaker 1: the cameras. At some stage we will see that, no doubt.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Well, I will hit you because the next stage is predictions.
- 54:32Speaker 2: So maybe that's one of your first predictions of this week.
- 54:35Speaker 3: I've got a great prediction. Carry on, get going.
- 54:38Speaker 2: Well, this is where before we can't wrap up the podcast,
- 54:40Speaker 2: I was into we predict this weekend's race outcome. It
- 54:42Speaker 2: is only Moto GP in terms of our top three
- 54:44Speaker 2: motorsports this weekend, it is a great track. We've already
- 54:48Speaker 2: made some vague predictions about what's going to be happening,
- 54:50Speaker 2: but now this is the time to really write them down,
- 54:52Speaker 2: set them in stock, and so what do you think
- 54:54Speaker 2: is going to happen this weekend?
- 54:55Speaker 3: Well, what's going to happen is we're talking about special
- 54:58Speaker 3: liveries before. I actually think that Fabio Quatro is going
- 55:01Speaker 3: to wear a special liveried set of leathers for the weekend,
- 55:04Speaker 3: and the front of them is just going to be
- 55:05Speaker 3: like his bare chest because he very rarely gets around
- 55:09Speaker 3: He very rarely gets around without a shirt on anyway,
- 55:12Speaker 3: So why don't we just have the leathers with just
- 55:14Speaker 3: like Fabio's bare chest, like an open zipper on his leathers,
- 55:17Speaker 3: because that's how he usually wears them. Anyway, Let's just
- 55:20Speaker 3: do that. That's not a prediction, that's just a wish
- 55:22Speaker 3: list just to satisfy my bizarre sins of humor prediction
- 55:27Speaker 3: for the weekend. All right, you said it before. How
- 55:30Speaker 3: about we go all Italian podium to jan Antonio Bozeki
- 55:33Speaker 3: Bangay podium on Sunday and Midyello will be absolutely ablaze
- 55:38Speaker 3: with flares on Sunday nights. I'm all for it.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Oh that's spicy, that's a spicy.
- 55:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, take a week off for that.
- 55:50Speaker 3: Yeah, they will.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Hands to take a week off. My only thing is
- 55:53Speaker 1: is imagine if it's a Martine or or a Mark
- 55:57Speaker 1: mark as if he is racing, who does take the victory?
- 55:59Speaker 1: Heres on Italian manufacturers. It is like a replay of
- 56:05Speaker 1: last year with Gigi there. We're like pointing to the shirt, going.
- 56:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it'll be a win strike.
- 56:16Speaker 2: I think if one of them.
- 56:17Speaker 3: Gets it'll be weeks something.
- 56:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely the way the Italians are having a week
- 56:22Speaker 1: off no matter what.
- 56:24Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the common thing.
- 56:26Speaker 2: I like that one. I like it a lot. I'm
- 56:28Speaker 2: going to go slightly left field and I think Joe
- 56:30Speaker 2: Martin and Ralph and Indees are gonna bury the hatchet.
- 56:33Speaker 2: They're going to have a public hug and say all
- 56:35Speaker 2: is forgiven. Enough no problems here about the title camp
- 56:38Speaker 2: and nothing's gone wrong. No shove, what shove? What are
- 56:41Speaker 2: you talking about? There was no shoving in the garage.
- 56:44Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to the next chapter of this most
- 56:47Speaker 2: bizarre and unusual rival right already that shouldn't exist, But
- 56:50Speaker 2: there we go. I think there's going to be the
- 56:52Speaker 2: next chapter in that.
- 56:55Speaker 3: I can't see. I can't see those two going out
- 56:59Speaker 3: for coffee any time soon.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Let's say, well, as Michael said, that MotoGP is back
- 57:06Speaker 1: this weekend after a break at the iconic Magello Circuit
- 57:10Speaker 1: and that is going to be ed live. You can
- 57:12Speaker 1: watch every practice, qualifying, sprint, and Sunday's Grand Prix on
- 57:17Speaker 1: Fox Sports and KO Sports. But that pretty much wraps
- 57:21Speaker 1: up everything across the world of motorsport right now. We
- 57:24Speaker 1: had Formula Under delivering chaos in Canada, Supercars shaking up
- 57:28Speaker 1: the championship in Tasmania, and MotoGP is heading into what's
- 57:31Speaker 1: going to be a massive weekend ahead of their double headers.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Big thank you as always to Shannon's Insurance for sponsoring
- 57:39Speaker 1: this episode of Shannon's Roundup. Like I said, you can
- 57:42Speaker 1: watch every practice, every qualifying, every sprint, every race, every
