Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to World View Matters, discussing controversial issues, discerning current events,
- 0:10defending biblical Christianity, no topic, off limits.
- 0:16And now, here's your host, David Firazzo.
- 0:19Hello, friends, family and Christ.
- 0:22God bless you.
- 0:23Thank you so much for tuning into another episode of World View Matters.
- 0:26I just want to thank one of our most loyal listeners and friends, Nina, from Charlottesville,
- 0:33Virginia.
- 0:34She always does the handwritten notes.
- 0:36God bless you for that.
- 0:38And she sent Ephesians 3, 20 now unto him who was able to do exceeding abundantly above
- 0:45all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.
- 0:50Of course, that's the Holy Spirit.
- 0:52Thank God.
- 0:53We have that deposit.
- 0:54We have sealed.
- 0:56We have that assurance.
- 0:57We have that.
- 0:58He will guide us into all truth.
- 0:59We are so blessed.
- 1:01God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.
- 1:03So anyway, thank you for your prayers for this ministry and we're just moving through,
- 1:08moving through on all these great topics, a lot of great guests.
- 1:11Today is no different.
- 1:12We've got Adam Rasmussen back with us with the Cultural Research Center and over in Glendale,
- 1:18Arizona.
- 1:19They've got some great, great information on all the studies they do.
- 1:23We're going to talk about just a little bit of what they do and some recent findings that
- 1:26I found to be just very interesting in light of what happened last year after the assassination
- 1:33of Charlie Kirk.
- 1:34So I want to bring Adam and brother, good to see you again.
- 1:37Thanks for your time.
- 1:38Thank you, David.
- 1:39It's wonderful to be with you.
- 1:41Yeah.
- 1:42It's always a blessing.
- 1:43I love the conversations as you and I both.
- 1:44I think we are probably on the exact same page when it comes to worldview and how important
- 1:50that is and what telling signs we have in America and specifically in the Christian
- 1:56Church.
- 1:57So before we dive in to this recent research, could you speak to just what you sense?
- 2:04Are we changing our things, getting better?
- 2:06Are they getting worse?
- 2:08Have we bought them out?
- 2:09Could it get better?
- 2:11I mean, I love their most recent movie, a great awakening on the life of George Whitfield.
- 2:17That was that convicted me.
- 2:20And I'm just hoping things like that will reach Christians and maybe we'll see some change.
- 2:26But what's your take on where we're at right now, Adam?
- 2:29Well, I love that verse, your listener hand wrote to you and I agree that God can do far
- 2:36more than we could ever imagine and to have a revival, to have a renewal, to see people
- 2:41coming to know Jesus, that's why you and I are here.
- 2:45And one of the things that we absolutely agree on, David, is that worldview is a way
- 2:50to measure that.
- 2:52So what we've done at the Cultural Research Center for the last six years, excuse me, and
- 2:57George Barna, since 1994, is we've measured biblical worldview.
- 3:04And that is, what do people believe and how do they behave based on biblical commands and
- 3:10principles?
- 3:11And your question are things better or worse?
- 3:14They look about the same.
- 3:15Charlie Kirk was murdered on September 10th.
- 3:19He lived in Glendale.
- 3:20He had been on our campus at Arizona Christian University, many of our faculty and students
- 3:25knew him personally.
- 3:26I've heard him speak a couple of times.
- 3:28And that tragic event did bring out a lot of these anecdotal story and their good around
- 3:38our country.
- 3:39And we can talk about those.
- 3:40But as it comes to measuring biblical worldview, that is, what do people believe in?
- 3:44How do they behave based on scripture?
- 3:47That's the same.
- 3:48It's at 4% that was before the events that we're talking about and today.
- 3:54Gosh, just to hear you say that again, I know it's true, 4% the biblical worldview in
- 4:00America.
- 4:01Oh my goodness.
- 4:02But let's go back.
- 4:03But there's something in the at the beginning of this research that you guys did.
- 4:09It says although 12% of American adults had a biblical worldview in 1994, that number
- 4:17was half to 6% by 2020.
- 4:22And then 2023 it dropped to 4.
- 4:24And that's where it remains, 4%.
- 4:27But Adam, explain this from a, help me make sense of this.
- 4:31What happened in the wake of Charlie Kirk's assassination last September, there was widespread
- 4:36discussion about a possible eruption of spiritual renewal, revival, awakening if you want to
- 4:43use that word.
- 4:44I know there were pockets of excitement in there.
- 4:47I love what I saw take place on some college campuses where Christian football players,
- 4:53for example, were preaching the gospel and baptizing kids, college kids.
- 4:57And I love what the younger generation Gen Z all of a sudden was saying, hey, I'm an
- 5:02atheist, never went to church, but after this, I'm going to go check it out.
- 5:05But now where we at now, we're in 2026 and some of those kids did go to church and I call
- 5:11them kids because we're older, I'm allowed to do that.
- 5:14Some of those kids did go to church, yeah, yeah.
- 5:17Some of them did pick up a Bible, maybe, but did they find the right church and with
- 5:22they pick up a Bible, where did they start reading?
- 5:23If they started reading in Leviticus, I'm not sure how long they'll stick with it.
- 5:27So share your thoughts on that because there were some exciting things happening.
- 5:31There were some signs that this could be a catalyst, but I'm not sure we are seeing that
- 5:36now in 2026, your thoughts.
- 5:39Yeah, I would like to talk about three data points that are very interesting that look
- 5:43good.
- 5:44And then after that, I'll answer why we haven't seen the uptick yet.
- 5:48But I mean, when we look at people and Bible sales, for example, they're at the all-time
- 5:55high, 21% up, okay?
- 5:59And last year, it was the highest it's been in 2024, 12% over the last year.
- 6:06So we see this trend of people buying Bibles, downloading Christian music, streaming, different
- 6:12things, more than ever, okay?
- 6:15So that's good, right?
- 6:17And then people going to church, we saw pockets, especially in areas like Pennsylvania, Ohio,
- 6:24Michigan, Illinois, Colorado, and then thirdly, turning point, USA, went from the pre-assassination
- 6:30baseline of roughly 800 college chapters to now over 3,500.
- 6:35So these are good, these are good things.
- 6:40But if your listeners and viewers want to look at this Federalist article that George
- 6:47Barna and I were interviewed for in September of 2025, we predicted what would happen today.
- 6:53And in it, I basically said that if this generation is going to understand Jesus Christ
- 6:59as proclaimed in scriptures, a lot of questions are going to need to be answered.
- 7:05And they have a need to ask these questions in a safe place.
- 7:10And it takes a while to get through those questions, which is what, here's the word, the
- 7:14Cypleship is.
- 7:15And then Marna in that same article said that most churches are not prepared for the surge
- 7:22of individuals coming in with clear and deep questions about purpose and meaning and
- 7:28spirituality and eternity and evil, big questions in life.
- 7:32So it's going to take some time, David, and people need to be discipled up.
- 7:37Yeah, let's talk about churches being prepared for a moment.
- 7:43We've got operations that you have to put in Eric quotes churches in America.
- 7:50We've got seeker sensitive churches.
- 7:52We've got big CEO corporate entertaining churches.
- 7:56And then we've got some smaller churches and not that all big churches are bad.
- 8:00I'm not saying that.
- 8:01But the remnant of true Bible believing churches that seem to get the importance of sharing
- 8:07the gospel and discipleship, I hate to say, but I believe it's true that it's such a minority
- 8:14and that it's not an exaggeration, I don't believe.
- 8:19So what kind of churches are these young people, kids, or even adults?
- 8:23Some adults were really affected by Charlie Kirk's assassination, too.
- 8:28And I think that woke a lot of people up generally, even in the church, people that were
- 8:32just playing church, maybe one foot in the world, one foot in Christianity, well, you
- 8:36can't live that way.
- 8:37You've got to make a commitment.
- 8:39So then the question goes, what church did they end up going to or checking out?
- 8:45And if more people flock to some of these churches as we heard, numbers went up.
- 8:49Same thing that happened after 9, 11, 2001, six months later, it tapered off.
- 8:55But were these churches prepared?
- 8:57And I think you just answered that.
- 8:59Not all churches were prepared because they don't understand how to disciple and really
- 9:04answer those tough questions about evil in the world about gender ideology, about life
- 9:09and in the womb, about marriage, family, God being creator and all that.
- 9:14Take to that Adam before we dive back into the research.
- 9:17Right.
- 9:18And going to church doesn't make you a Christian.
- 9:21I mean, true.
- 9:22Having, you know, being in a church building does not make you a Christian any more than
- 9:26sitting in a garage makes you a car, okay?
- 9:30And just attending church or even listening to a sermon, a lot of sermons are not focused
- 9:36on the gospel, which has to do with sin, a holy God, repentance, and faith in Jesus Christ
- 9:42alone for salvation.
- 9:44So I've always defined ministry as relationships around the Bible.
- 9:49It doesn't matter if it's a mom and dad teaching their children or a group of neighbors gathering
- 9:56in a home or a youth group or a church.
- 9:59If it's not centered on the Bible with Jesus Christ himself, the center character, the
- 10:05triune God and the rescue of people, how are people going to be saved?
- 10:10What is the value proposition of these churches?
- 10:13It has to come back to what we do that the rest of the world doesn't, which is to proclaim
- 10:17the gospel.
- 10:18And the gospel is not going to change.
- 10:20Yeah.
- 10:21Amen.
- 10:22Okay.
- 10:23Before we get to your research, I want to ask you about these three segments, three categories
- 10:28I should say, but other research came out from the gallop, which was really interesting
- 10:34and what we're talking about, that the poll found a sharp rise in young men calling religion
- 10:40very important.
- 10:42And they called it a sharp rise, 42% of men under 30, now profess that religion is very
- 10:50important to them.
- 10:52I know your answer, and yet we just talked about some of the issues.
- 10:56Well, yes, it's very important, but how do you define religion?
- 10:59What do they mean by that?
- 11:00Your thoughts on that survey, Adam.
- 11:04I'm slightly more confident in finding good material if they're going to choose the word
- 11:09religion over spirituality, because that might tip the hat towards more traditional things.
- 11:16And in America, by and large, it would be Christianity.
- 11:20However, that's not what we measure.
- 11:22What we measure at the Cultural Research Center is biblical worldview.
- 11:26So not just religion, not just quote Christianity.
- 11:29We want to measure what are the beliefs and behaviors squared against basic doctrine
- 11:35in Scripture.
- 11:37And what we found is 4% of adults in America have an integrated worldview, it's cohesive,
- 11:44it lines up with the Bible.
- 11:45And then David, this is an interesting segment.
- 11:49We call these emerging followers.
- 11:52So I would assume if people are latching on to Jesus and faith in Jesus of some sort,
- 11:58they may have salvation actually, they may believe in Him alone, but they've got huge
- 12:02gaps in their understanding.
- 12:04There's about 10% of adults in America right now that would fit in that category.
- 12:09The sad thing is it's down, it's been half in the last decade.
- 12:13So it used to be about 20% of Americans.
- 12:15Now it's 10% or about 25 million Americans would be in what we would call emerging followers.
- 12:22And I think this is probably, if you and I are going to talk about people going to Christian
- 12:26or biblical churches on the wake of a Charlie Kirk in that incident, they're probably in
- 12:33that category where they have some faith, but it needs to be matured.
- 12:38It needs to be grounded in Scripture through all of what God has to say.
- 12:43Isn't that what Jesus told us to do to make disciples?
- 12:46And then the rest, the 85% or so are world citizens.
- 12:50And that group is outpacing the church really right now.
- 12:56But we want to see that turn around, we want to see that turn around.
- 13:00That's not going to take much work, right?
- 13:02I'm kidding.
- 13:03So we've got integrated disciples, emergent followers and world citizens.
- 13:09And I think the one that is interesting is the word emergent.
- 13:15Years ago, this was in the 80s, 90s, I don't know if you remember hearing about the emergent
- 13:20church.
- 13:21Well, that was a movement that was getting away from the inerrancy of Scripture and
- 13:27the true traditional biblical worldview and maybe more progressive and maybe reinterpreting
- 13:33certain doctrines that I'm thinking, wow, when I hear emergent followers, to me, that
- 13:39doesn't sound good.
- 13:40But you define each one of those, I understand integrated disciples, I understand world
- 13:44citizens.
- 13:45Is it too simplistic to say worldly of the world?
- 13:50Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:52And thanks for differentiating that the emergent church is not something we hear a ton
- 13:57about anymore.
- 13:58That's kind of a language of the 90s, but DA Carson has a wonderful book on that about
- 14:03being conversant with the emerging church.
- 14:05And that is not what we mean at all.
- 14:08What we mean are probably true blue believers in Jesus, but very immature probably in their
- 14:16understanding of a genesis to revelation, understanding of Scripture.
- 14:21So we're always coming back to what does the Bible say?
- 14:24So you've got the integrated disciples where they have a pretty cohesive world view.
- 14:29They're emergent.
- 14:30They're not quite there yet.
- 14:31That's about 10%.
- 14:33And then these world citizens, I think you and I may have talked about this before, David.
- 14:37These are synchrotists.
- 14:40What that means is that very subjective and they'll take a little bit of Jesus when he
- 14:44talks about love, but they reject him when he talks about judgment.
- 14:47And they'll take a little bit of karma and a little bit of maybe Marxism or whatever's
- 14:53in the world.
- 14:54They are world citizens.
- 14:56They can call themselves Christians, but based on what the Bible says, they're more like
- 15:01you said, worldly or their world view is actually coming from what's in the world, the
- 15:07prince of the power of the air, things like that.
- 15:10Yes.
- 15:11So let's go back to an explanation of that in the research that says in 2020, I believe
- 15:16that segment was 69% and then it jumped to 85% of US adults in the world citizen category.
- 15:27I mean, you do this all the time.
- 15:29You work with numbers and all these surveys.
- 15:31That seems like a pretty huge jump for five or six years, no?
- 15:36It is.
- 15:37And COVID did us no good.
- 15:39And we were told by these mandates that we cannot be in church together and many people,
- 15:45they just have a conditioned response that, you know, authority says something.
- 15:49We're going to do that.
- 15:50Everybody else is doing that.
- 15:51I don't want to rock the boat on a Christian.
- 15:53I need to be nice and all that.
- 15:56Well, when people are separated, it's almost like a fire, right?
- 16:02If you separate all the logs, it won't take long for it to die out.
- 16:06Christianity is a team sport.
- 16:08There are a lot of one and others in there.
- 16:10And so we saw a 33% decrease in just 18 months.
- 16:16We went from 6% to 4% and we haven't recovered from that yet.
- 16:23So there's a quote in here that's pretty sobering.
- 16:27And I believe it was Dr. Barna who said, the fate of our nation hangs in the balance.
- 16:33The national divide is an indication of the spiritual battle for the soul of America.
- 16:40What was he talking about the national divide?
- 16:42Well, I think it's pretty clear that we have people constantly getting shoved to one side
- 16:50or the other of the political spectrum instead of having more representative values that
- 16:56we can share together, values, not interests.
- 17:00It got their own personal interests like Francis Schaeffer said, personal peace and affluence.
- 17:06But what we need to do is come back together on values that we find to be important, such
- 17:11as faith, religious liberty, freedom of speech, honoring people that are different than we
- 17:18are, those kind of things.
- 17:19And unfortunately, if you take the Bible and the basics of loving God and love your neighbor
- 17:27out of the equation, all that you're left with is yourself and your team.
- 17:33And that's not what Jesus called us to.
- 17:35He called us to love our enemies, pray for those who persecute us, to love our neighbors
- 17:40as ourselves.
- 17:41And the founding fathers understood this.
- 17:44Thomas Jefferson, who was not a Christian, but he had what was known as the Jefferson Bible,
- 17:50right?
- 17:51He took all of the writings of Jesus and he called them the most sublime ethic ever given
- 17:56to us.
- 17:57And if we don't have the Bible and if we don't have faith in things that are eternal,
- 18:02we're just going to continue to be divided.
- 18:04And one other thing, David, is we would maintain at the Cultural Research Center that all
- 18:10of the physical symptoms we see of children being born out of weblock, of the divorce rate,
- 18:17of people dropping out of college, of abortion, of, you know, people more and more evaporating
- 18:24from the, what we call the demographic, middle class, all of these things and the shrinking
- 18:31of respect and honor towards one another.
- 18:34All of these physical symptoms are part of a spiritual problem.
- 18:40Right down the middle, we've abandoned the gospel.
- 18:42Yeah.
- 18:43Yeah.
- 18:44Absolutely.
- 18:45Absolutely.
- 18:46We're seeing as spiritual at its core because if you abandon God as creator, then you
- 18:52got to do whatever you want when it comes to marriage, family, gender, civil society and
- 18:59how you do government throughout, you know, God as any kind of authority.
- 19:03But I want to talk to you about something else that Dr. Barnett said, after all the years
- 19:08of research and all the numbers and the declining biblical worldview and the news that just
- 19:14doesn't seem to be good, it appears that Dr. Barnett is still an optimist and I want
- 19:18to quote him and get your response at him.
- 19:21He said, the fact that we have not plumbed new depths since then, hopefully suggests that
- 19:27we have bottomed out and are in line to experience positive growth in biblical thought and action.
- 19:36So apparently Dr. Barnett rejects the argument that further decline is inevitable and perhaps
- 19:44even irreversible.
- 19:46Ah, I'm having a hard time keeping up with with his optimism, but Adam, go ahead, help
- 19:51me.
- 19:52Right.
- 19:53So we don't believe in cause, cause, effect.
- 19:58We don't believe that.
- 19:59We believe in agent cause, effect that as human beings, we have been given free will,
- 20:05we can make a choice and God is on his throne and he has changed culture before.
- 20:11The way God changes culture is God changes the church and the church changes culture.
- 20:16So we've even seen this.
- 20:17We started this in 1994 with 12%, the construct hasn't changed.
- 20:24We've been measuring the same thing, okay, and it went down pretty rapidly to 7%, but
- 20:30then there was an uptick in 2000 to 10%, there was an uptick again to 11% in 2005.
- 20:41We've seen this in the great awakenings.
- 20:43We've seen this before and I got to say this, David.
- 20:45The gospel is not going to change.
- 20:47God's offer for redemption of individuals, families, churches, societies, nations, cultures
- 20:56is the same and it's always the same.
- 20:58There's a little story about this ship that sent a message to a light it saw at sea.
- 21:05Change your course 15 degrees.
- 21:07The light came back and said, no, you change your course 15 degrees.
- 21:13And then the ship said, I am a warship.
- 21:17Change your course 15 degrees.
- 21:19And then the other message came back, I am a lighthouse, make your decision.
- 21:28And God's word is not going to change.
- 21:30God is not going to change.
- 21:31But what needs to change is you and me.
- 21:33We have to say Jesus, you died to take away the sins of the world, you sent your spirit
- 21:41to revive the church.
- 21:43Amen.
- 21:44I'm not Lord.
- 21:45You are.
- 21:46And if we can do that, we can see pockets happen.
- 21:48Can I tell you a little bit about something we've seen at ACU?
- 21:50Well, yeah, I was on a Christian.
- 21:51I was just going to ask you about that because I'm seeing this 833% increase by the students
- 21:58there in developing a biblical world.
- 22:00That's fascinating.
- 22:02How can we do that around the country?
- 22:03Go ahead Adam.
- 22:04Yeah, I'm glad we're talking about it because we're kind of numbers freaks a little
- 22:11bit.
- 22:12If you go to culturalresearchcenter.com, you can plumb the depths there.
- 22:16We've got all kinds of topics on family and the elections and church attendance and pastors
- 22:23and all of that.
- 22:24So we practice what we preach.
- 22:27Every student at ACU does a student worldview inventory.
- 22:31It's very similar to what we're doing across the nation with a few changes on things
- 22:36that we want at this age, at this particular place.
- 22:40And we've just released our first five-year longitudinal study.
- 22:45So what this means is they've done this for five years and you're right.
- 22:50Students come in basically the same as their peers.
- 22:52They are Christians because we have what people call a covenantal school where every faculty
- 22:58member, every employee, every student says, I want to follow Jesus, okay?
- 23:02Thank you.
- 23:03But they're pretty much the same as their peers.
- 23:05By the time they graduate, they've had 833 percent growth in biblical worldview.
- 23:11Here's one more stat.
- 23:12They are 28 times more likely to have a biblical worldview than those aged 21 to 24.
- 23:21And your question is, how do we do it?
- 23:23It's very simple.
- 23:25It's what it says in Deuteronomy 6, Ephesians 6, we just make all of life about Jesus in
- 23:31the classroom when we, you know, in student life through all the sports.
- 23:38And we really dive into those big questions about who am I, what's important in life.
- 23:43We look at Western civilization, we do all of those things from an intellectually rigorous
- 23:49place.
- 23:50And that's what needs to happen.
- 23:51There's one other thing people can do.
- 23:53All of our research is free.
- 23:55But if somebody wants to take this worldview inventory for themselves, they can do that.
- 24:00And it's on our website.
- 24:02And I think it's like $10.
- 24:03It's not expensive.
- 24:05But if people want to see, okay, how does my small group or how does my family or how
- 24:09does my church?
- 24:10Or if there's a K-12 teacher or administrator out there, we've articulated it to 4th, 8th
- 24:18and 12th grade students.
- 24:20So it can come right alongside what they're doing with their state testing at those Christian
- 24:26schools.
- 24:27Okay.
- 24:28That's another thing people can do just to see, okay, here's a gap in my understanding.
- 24:32I'll talk to my pastor or my mentor and we're going to, we're going to work on that.
- 24:36So that's brand new.
- 24:38Thanks for letting me put that out there for sure.
- 24:41That's great.
- 24:42Again, the website culturalresearchcenter.com, I love what you guys do.
- 24:47I want to just share the end of this article, the description there about the research
- 24:54at the end, if we lose another generation to secular humanism, postmodernism, Eastern
- 25:00mysticism, Marxism and all the other unbiblical philosophies of life, we will lose America
- 25:07itself.
- 25:09So you guys say in this parents, grandparents, teachers and pastors need to get on top
- 25:14of this now.
- 25:16So Adam in the last two minutes, just speak to, for example, parents of young children
- 25:22and hopefully there's some pastors watching to them.
- 25:25Sure, their grandparents watching, what can we and they do about the young people in their
- 25:31own sphere of influence?
- 25:33Well, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his mind.
- 25:38What we have to do, as it says in Deuteronomy 6, hero is hero, the Lord you've got, the
- 25:43Lord is one, these words should be on your heart.
- 25:47So that's the first thing, pastors, parents, teachers, we have to ask, am I living this
- 25:55myself because more is caught than taught, right?
- 25:59People will see that hypocrisy.
- 26:01So we have to start with ourselves and every day keep coming back to the Lord and growing,
- 26:05but then each one needs to teach one.
- 26:07We need to be serious about this.
- 26:10I can't think of anything more serious in our lives than to love God and love others
- 26:15and to share the gospel.
- 26:17It's not about your job, it's not about your occupation, it's about your preoccupation.
- 26:22Like, everything else is details.
- 26:24The reason we are here is to grow in Christ's likeness and have other people join us.
- 26:30This is pre-life, that is life.
- 26:34So what we want to do is get people ready to meet Jesus.
- 26:38Paul said in Colossians, I work at this with all of my might.
- 26:41So be of good cheer, turn back to the Lord, have that strength, and let's bring whoever
- 26:47we can.
- 26:48It's a wonderful life.
- 26:49Do that.
- 26:50It's great.
- 26:51Amen.
- 26:52I love that.
- 26:53Time is short, friends, and we don't know how much time each of us has.
- 26:56Nothing's guaranteed, but we do know the urgency of the gospel message, and there are
- 26:59people that aren't going to be in a good place unless they hear, unless they have seeds
- 27:04planted or seeds watered of the gospel.
- 27:07I just, that's another reason I love that movie, a great awakening.
- 27:10The passion and the commitment and the boldest and the intentionality, George Wilhat and
- 27:16his work ethic, I could go on and on, but really inspiring, friends, that's, we need to
- 27:21be about the gospel ourselves and about the Word of God so that we can then, it'll, it'll
- 27:25be outflow.
- 27:26It'll be a natural outflow from our heart, out of the abundance, out of the abundance
- 27:30of the heart, the mouth speaks, and getting all excited here, Adam.
- 27:33Hey, thanks so much for your time today, Lord willing, we'll do this again in the near
- 27:36future.
- 27:37Appreciate all the work you do, brother.
- 27:39Thank you.
- 27:40God bless you, friends, and as always, keep speaking the truth about things that matter.
