- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Jim Moore of the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 0:03Speaker 1: A couple of quick, big picture things Jim around the country.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I am a little disturbed at how many coaches have
- 0:11Speaker 1: been fired mid season on the college football scene. I
- 0:15Speaker 1: mean eight of them. I know they're owed all kinds
- 0:18Speaker 1: of money one hundred and sixty nine million dollars something
- 0:20Speaker 1: like that, but why is this happening? And I don't
- 0:23Speaker 1: think it's good for the football programs at these places.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I don't see why people are changing coaches in midstream.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I mean, and very good coaches, right Brian Kelly among others.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It just got fired at LSU. I mean, this is
- 0:37Speaker 1: something we have not seen in college football.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it's just it's it's kind of the
- 0:44Speaker 2: new world of football college football. You know, there's a
- 0:46Speaker 2: lot of money involved, and there's a lot of money involved.
- 0:48Speaker 2: There's high expectations, you know. I don't like to see
- 0:53Speaker 2: it happen either. I think it's very disruptive for the program.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I think it's disruptive for the kids on a football team.
- 0:58Speaker 2: You know, the loss of ability in their lives it crucial,
- 1:02Speaker 2: a crucial point in their lives makes it tough, you know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I just I feel for the coaches, their families. I
- 1:11Speaker 2: know that there's you know, huge payouts and so people
- 1:14Speaker 2: are where they're getting paid a lot. The head coach is,
- 1:17Speaker 2: the assistants aren't, and the assistants are going to have
- 1:19Speaker 2: to move, and families are gonna have to move, and
- 1:21Speaker 2: you know, the kids are gonna have to leave the
- 1:23Speaker 2: schools and the friends that they're in now and go
- 1:25Speaker 2: to other ones. And that's common in our world. I mean,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know, it's not just football. It happens, but it's
- 1:29Speaker 2: just it doesn't make it fun. So yeah, I don't
- 1:32Speaker 2: I'm not a fan of it, but I know I'm
- 1:34Speaker 2: not privy to why they're happening, why those things are
- 1:37Speaker 2: happening to each school. And quite frankly, I while I
- 1:40Speaker 2: feel bad for those people, my focus has to be
- 1:45Speaker 2: on this football team right here, and so that's that's
- 1:47Speaker 2: where I spend the majority of my energy is thinking
- 1:50Speaker 2: about this football team and not what's happening elsewhere in
- 1:53Speaker 2: the in the country.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, Joe Finnano had another big day thirty
- 1:58Speaker 1: two throught ball forty eight times three forty four three touchdowns.
- 2:02Speaker 1: He continues to be you know, error free on a
- 2:06Speaker 1: lot of levels. That is something that we don't see
- 2:09Speaker 1: very often. I mean, quarterbacks throw the ball that much.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Someone picks it off once in a while, but he
- 2:15Speaker 1: has been really clean in that category. I don't think
- 2:19Speaker 1: he'd asked for much more from a QB.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Can you I like how you carefully worded that. Yeah,
- 2:28Speaker 2: I think can we ask for more? Yeah, We're gonna
- 2:32Speaker 2: always ask for more. Okay, Joe's playing at a high
- 2:36Speaker 2: level right now. And the reason that Joe's playing at
- 2:38Speaker 2: a high level is because he works very hard at it.
- 2:40Speaker 2: He studies the game, he's smart, he's experienced. He has
- 2:43Speaker 2: a lot of trust in the calls coming in from
- 2:46Speaker 2: coach Samus, and he has a lot of trust in
- 2:48Speaker 2: the way he's coached by coach Tracy. And he has
- 2:51Speaker 2: tremendous trust in his offensive line and the guys he's
- 2:53Speaker 2: throwing the ball to. So, you know, as long as
- 2:56Speaker 2: he continues to work hard and we do a good
- 2:58Speaker 2: job of supporting him and trying to best we can
- 3:00Speaker 2: to put him in a position to be successful, then
- 3:03Speaker 2: then he will play well. And you know, with Joe,
- 3:06Speaker 2: you don't have to worry about him being prepared and
- 3:08Speaker 2: him working hard. That's just his personality and it's really
- 3:12Speaker 2: fun to see a guy who's having success just keep
- 3:15Speaker 2: driving to be better and better and better. And that's
- 3:18Speaker 2: what Joe's doing.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what you want your players to do. Overtime,
- 3:23Speaker 1: they started at the twenty five yard line. I always
- 3:25Speaker 1: wonder it looks like people try to run the ball.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Different teams first try to set it up like a
- 3:31Speaker 1: normal let's get a first down, get closer to the
- 3:33Speaker 1: end zone. But does it become more more of a
- 3:37Speaker 1: more pressure and a sense on the QB and the
- 3:40Speaker 1: offense to put it in the end zone. Because a
- 3:42Speaker 1: couple of times this year syrahcuse this one against Rice,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you had to settle for field goals and that ended up,
- 3:48Speaker 1: you know, turning the game around in overtime. So I'm
- 3:52Speaker 1: just getting I guess my question is, what's the philosophy.
- 3:54Speaker 1: What do you try to accomplish in overtime or double
- 3:58Speaker 1: overtime when you get the ball score touchdowns?
- 4:01Speaker 2: You hit it on the head is you have to
- 4:03Speaker 2: score touchdowns in the red zone and specifically in overtime,
- 4:07Speaker 2: and when you don't, you put yourself at risk of
- 4:09Speaker 2: losing the game and that's what happened to us. So
- 4:12Speaker 2: you know, we put tremendous amount of emphasis on red
- 4:15Speaker 2: zone offense and defense, and we've got to get better
- 4:19Speaker 2: at it, and we will just continue to work out
- 4:22Speaker 2: it and we will get better at it.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Is that I got to get this one in because
- 4:28Speaker 1: I saw North Carolina played Virginia. They're a ranked team
- 4:31Speaker 1: last weekend. They went to overtime. Bill Belichick when they
- 4:35Speaker 1: scored went for two points to try to win the game.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Is that something that crosses your mind when you get
- 4:41Speaker 1: in that situation. I don't know why he did it,
- 4:43Speaker 1: but they failed. They missed by half a yard and
- 4:46Speaker 1: lost the game. But I wonder sometimes going for two
- 4:51Speaker 1: is that the way to end this thing?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean I thought about it. You always think
- 4:55Speaker 2: about it. There's just a lot of variables that turn
- 5:00Speaker 2: and whether or not you want to do that. And
- 5:02Speaker 2: I've had several people ask me why didn't you go
- 5:04Speaker 2: for two when you scored on the first one to
- 5:07Speaker 2: end it? Well, because I thought we could stop on
- 5:10Speaker 2: defense and score again. And that's why, you know, and
- 5:13Speaker 2: I didn't want to. We're a five and two football
- 5:16Speaker 2: team that's playing really good on offense and I didn't
- 5:19Speaker 2: want it to come down to one play. You know,
- 5:23Speaker 2: in retrospect, would I do do the same thing, Yes,
- 5:26Speaker 2: I would, you know, and people can argue that it's
- 5:29Speaker 2: right or wrong. I just feel like it was the
- 5:33Speaker 2: right decision, and I'd make the same decision again. I'd
- 5:36Speaker 2: hope for a different result, but I'd make the same decision.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But I do understand, like with coach and I'm not,
- 5:42Speaker 2: I'm not. I don't. I don't know what Coach Belichick did.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I didn't see the game, you know, I didn't even
- 5:47Speaker 2: know it came and went to overtime. But I I think,
- 5:49Speaker 2: you know, if I were to have a take a guess,
- 5:53Speaker 2: I'd say, well, he's a team that's struggling. Was a
- 5:56Speaker 2: game at Virginia? Was it?
- 5:58Speaker 1: You at North Carolina at home?
- 6:01Speaker 2: And you're a struggling football team playing a ranked team.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Help with it. Let's go, let's go get it right now.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Let's go try to win this game right now.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I like that thought definitely. All right, back
- 6:13Speaker 1: with the Jimura, we continue one final segment on the
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yukon Football Coaches Show on liar Field
