- 1:27Speaker 1: hear to believe. Then grab your popcorn because there is more.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I'm the popcorn moment. I was there at the listening
- 1:37Speaker 1: session in terre Hote, which some people are telling me
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm pronouncing wrong.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Am I not supposed to call it terre Hote? Is
- 1:45Speaker 2: it terra Hate? I've done it both ways.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I'm not trying to do it wrong, but hey, some
- 1:51Speaker 1: people want to be pronunciation people. Uh, if you've got
- 1:54Speaker 1: the better way to pronounce it. I always thought it
- 1:55Speaker 1: was tara Hate. I guess maybe it's terra Hote. You
- 1:58Speaker 1: tell me, I'll do it your way. Senator Gregory good
- 2:04Speaker 1: greg good Goode had a listening session about redistricting. This
- 2:09Speaker 1: is the idea that legislators get to draw the maps
- 2:12Speaker 1: of congressional districts, and you can draw the map any.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Which way you choose.
- 2:16Speaker 1: It is a completely legal process, a political process that
- 2:20Speaker 1: any party that has power can engage in.
- 2:24Speaker 2: It is not unconstitutional. Oh that one. Let me at
- 2:30Speaker 2: least set the scene. Drive down Saturday to Vigo County,
- 2:34Speaker 2: drive down and park and.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I realized, while there's a line to get in, where's
- 2:40Speaker 1: the where's the fanfare?
- 2:43Speaker 2: I was?
- 2:43Speaker 1: I was concerned. I was expecting crowds. I was expecting
- 2:46Speaker 1: a thing. There's nothing. I'd asked the question, where was
- 2:51Speaker 1: turning for USA? They put out the the graphics about it. Hey, everybody,
- 2:56Speaker 1: listening session. I'm sorry, I thought this mattered. I don't
- 3:01Speaker 1: know where you were. I don't know where the Republican
- 3:04Speaker 1: Party was. Vigo County had some kind of Republican breakfast.
- 3:08Speaker 1: They had Diego Morales speaking there. Oh good lord, guys.
- 3:12Speaker 1: But no one showed up to the thing, to this
- 3:15Speaker 1: listening session. Because I was in the room now, I
- 3:17Speaker 1: heard that some other people got thrown out, other reporters
- 3:20Speaker 1: weren't allowed in.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I got there and something one.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Person knew who I was, and they were like, hey,
- 3:26Speaker 1: we've already got some media inside. The New York Times
- 3:28Speaker 1: was inside, The Endee Star was inside.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I was inside. Sinner good shook my hand.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I had spoke for a few minutes with the mayor,
- 3:36Speaker 1: Brandon Sackbun, young guy, nice enough guy. And I sat
- 3:41Speaker 1: down and I listened from ten thirty to one o'clock.
- 3:45Speaker 1: That was the time of the session. That's how long
- 3:47Speaker 1: I stayed. I'd say a couple hundred people showed up. Now,
- 3:54Speaker 1: not a couple hundred people spoke, right, some people they
- 3:57Speaker 1: just filled out a form and that was it.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Now. You weren't a to bring cell phones in by
- 4:01Speaker 2: I guess media was allowed. So we did have a laptop.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I didn't have my.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Phone on me or anything like that. And one by
- 4:06Speaker 1: one people came in to a person between them. For
- 4:11Speaker 1: the time that I was there, none of them were
- 4:13Speaker 1: in favor of redistricting, not a single person. And you
- 4:17Speaker 1: could take it at that and be like, well, you
- 4:19Speaker 1: see there it is. They don't care about redistricting, they
- 4:22Speaker 1: don't want it. That crowd was absolutely not representative of Indiana.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I'm going to say that clearly.
- 4:30Speaker 1: That crowd was over the age of sixty, and that
- 4:32Speaker 1: crowd was mostly women.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Of course, it was that crowd.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Also, you could argue, very nice they called Trump a pedophile.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Not all of them, they constant references to Orange Man bad.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I know a fascist when I see one. There was
- 4:55Speaker 1: a lot of that crap. There was a lot of
- 4:59Speaker 1: talk about the shutdown, and of course everything was Trump's
- 5:04Speaker 1: fault and Republican's faults and Republicans this and Republicans that,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and I don't know where the Republicans were to make
- 5:13Speaker 1: their case, and I thought it was pretty ignorantly stupid
- 5:17Speaker 1: of them not to be there.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You could have a breakfast that morning but not show up.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe they din't show up because they
- 5:23Speaker 2: had jobs to go to afterwards. Maybe they didn't show
- 5:25Speaker 2: up because they had football to watch. I don't know
- 5:28Speaker 2: why they didn't show up. But if the Republicans want.
- 5:32Speaker 1: To call a special session for redistricting and then not
- 5:36Speaker 1: engage some support for a state senator who you want
- 5:40Speaker 1: to come your way who was having a listening session, Yeah,
- 5:44Speaker 1: great work on the planning. The people there had three
- 5:51Speaker 1: basic arguments. The cost unconstitutional empower grab. The cost of
- 5:59Speaker 1: a special session doing so and changing the district is
- 6:03Speaker 1: unconstitutional in power grab. I'm gonna get through these quickly
- 6:07Speaker 1: for the sake of time here on the show. You
- 6:10Speaker 1: could argue that there's a cost to a special session.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Since no one would have an issue with the cost
- 6:17Speaker 1: of a special session regarding property taxes, we're not actually
- 6:20Speaker 1: bothered by the concept of cost, and I also favor
- 6:23Speaker 1: a special session on property taxes or doing it in
- 6:26Speaker 1: the next session.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Everybody who looks at the special session saying it.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Should have been called now understands we have something called
- 6:33Speaker 1: precedent to work with. But very often people can't actually
- 6:37Speaker 1: engage in strategy. They're so busy being angry and foaming
- 6:40Speaker 1: at the mouth. It's a valueless proposition. I would suggest
- 6:44Speaker 1: not doing it. I dismissed the cost conversation because we're
- 6:49Speaker 1: now talking about costs and what it is we spend. Oh,
- 6:52Speaker 1: I got a lot of places to save. I start
- 6:55Speaker 1: with Micah Beck with csuv unconstitutional. I heard that a
- 7:03Speaker 1: lot at this listening session, and what I learned is
- 7:09Speaker 1: that America needs a Civics lesson. Yes, the Constitution discusses
- 7:14Speaker 1: a census every ten years. It does not say you
- 7:18Speaker 1: can only engage in a redistricting once every ten years.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Neither does the Indiana State Constitution.
- 7:24Speaker 1: The number of people who simply don't know how to
- 7:27Speaker 1: read or purposely got it wrong or were just genuinely confused.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Was through the roof. We have failed in the very
- 7:35Speaker 1: concept of educating. Hoosiers don't feel good.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Those of you who teach higher ed don't feel good
- 7:41Speaker 2: at all.
- 7:43Speaker 1: This was a resounding expose of your failures.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It is non unconstitutional to redistrict in mid decade.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It is well within the rights of the state to
- 7:55Speaker 1: do so, which brings us to the idea of power grab.
- 8:01Speaker 1: There were some people who noted that seven to two
- 8:03Speaker 1: was unfair. They would like to see more democratic districts,
- 8:08Speaker 1: which brings us, of course, to the point, why does
- 8:10Speaker 1: everyone think seven to two is okay? Seven to two
- 8:13Speaker 1: meaning seven Republicans two Democrats who control the nine congressional
- 8:17Speaker 1: seats in Indiana has it's a made up number. It's
- 8:20Speaker 1: a made up number. Well, Tony, we've drawn the districts
- 8:25Speaker 1: to be fair. You've drawn the districts the way you
- 8:27Speaker 1: drew the districts.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You drew the.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Districts so you can have the appearance of fairness. This
- 8:34Speaker 1: is my argument with the former governor Mitch Daniels. I
- 8:37Speaker 1: am not interested in the appearance of anything. District drawing
- 8:43Speaker 1: is in and of itself a political process. We take
- 8:48Speaker 1: a look at the shutdown, and we have Democrats saying
- 8:52Speaker 1: we will not negotiate unless you do this for us,
- 8:56Speaker 1: meaning the Obamacare subsidies, and we'll let people go hungry.
- 8:58Speaker 1: We'll have air traffic controller not get fed. They're utilizing
- 9:03Speaker 1: their power to try and get what they want. Guys, Hoosiers,
- 9:08Speaker 1: welcome to the world of politics. I'd appreciate it if
- 9:11Speaker 1: everybody grew up right now and stop telling me about
- 9:14Speaker 1: how it's unfair. Cut out the nonsense. If Democrats had
- 9:19Speaker 1: what it took to win statewide elections, do you or
- 9:23Speaker 1: could you imagine what they would do with the power.
- 9:27Speaker 1: One of the reasons I put forward to you we
- 9:28Speaker 1: should engage with distancting because I've seen what the political
- 9:31Speaker 1: left does.
- 9:31Speaker 2: With power and I simply disagree with it.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Part of our problem in this conversation is a lot
- 9:41Speaker 1: of people are acting like children, screaming and yelling into
- 9:45Speaker 1: the wind or on social media or anywhere else, and
- 9:48Speaker 1: it does no good. They are not planning, they are
- 9:51Speaker 1: not focused. Nothing about what I heard and saw in
- 9:55Speaker 1: terre HOAt has changed my mind, and I do hope
- 9:58Speaker 1: Senator Good recognize it. There are many people who were
- 10:01Speaker 1: not there, and he favors and votes for the redistricting.
- 10:05Speaker 2: It doesn't excuse the Republicans. It didn't show up. What
- 10:07Speaker 2: the hell is wrong with you?
- 10:10Speaker 1: This is why you deserve to lose the supermajority because
- 10:14Speaker 1: you act like somehow you ain't affected or it's beneath you.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Get your lazy asses out of bed.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Where is your leadership and why don't they demand better?
- 10:27Speaker 1: Maybe it's because you have breakfast with Diega Morales and
- 10:30Speaker 1: think you're doing something.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I think I'm done yelling at you guys. Sorry I
- 10:36Speaker 2: was yelling at them. I didn't mean to yell at you.
- 10:40Speaker 1: But there's not an argument against redistricting I have heard
- 10:43Speaker 1: so far that is anything more than emotional.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Vote for it. Republicans, do it now,
