Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to that take. I welcome to the Conversation Corner.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Documentary filmmaker Alex Holder, who spent the last few years
- 0:06Speaker 1: following Lindsay Graham, sharing with US and others behind the
- 0:09Speaker 1: scenes videos of his time recording the late South Carolina
- 0:13Speaker 1: Republican Centator. Here is one of them, showing Graham on
- 0:16Speaker 1: a call with Israeli Prime Minister d'atignell.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Hey, Bb, Lindsay, I couldn't. I'm just so impressed, glad
- 0:27Speaker 2: to be your friend.
- 0:31Speaker 3: You are friend.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I'm going to meet with the President this weekend. I'm
- 0:34Speaker 2: going down to Durrl. I'm going to try to get
- 0:37Speaker 2: him to join with y'all in Lebanon to maybe fly
- 0:40Speaker 2: some with you.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I'm joining out by Alex Holder for more on his
- 0:44Speaker 1: time filming with Senator Graham. And Alex heard about the tavern,
- 0:47Speaker 1: said hey, can I have a drink in the conversation corner?
- 0:49Speaker 1: I said, Alex, of course, you can have a drink
- 0:50Speaker 1: in the conversation corner, So drink.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Up, enjoy it.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I want to play for my audience another sound bite
- 0:55Speaker 1: which I think is really important. It's right after the
- 0:57Speaker 1: US Israeli war on Iran is law, and here's Graham
- 1:01Speaker 1: and you're with him.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Let's play it. We've done it.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I almost cried, Yeah, I mean, like, how long have
- 1:09Speaker 2: we been pushing this?
- 1:10Speaker 3: I mean, you've been pushing this for years?
- 1:13Speaker 2: Is here?
- 1:13Speaker 3: I thought, Trump this born Jack.
- 1:17Speaker 2: He's the best thing I've ever done.
- 1:19Speaker 3: He loves wall and stuff up.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So you know, there are a lot of people inside
- 1:26Speaker 2: didn't want to do it. So I've had my challenges.
- 1:30Speaker 1: What does that encounter there tell you?
- 1:35Speaker 3: It was a pretty extraordinary moment.
- 1:36Speaker 4: I mean the access that we got on this project
- 1:39Speaker 4: was unparalleled. And you know, there'll be days we will
- 1:42Speaker 4: be in his office filming and not many things will happen,
- 1:45Speaker 4: and then on some days we'll get a moment where
- 1:47Speaker 4: he is getting a phone call from the is ready
- 1:50Speaker 4: Prime Minister or remarking on you know, the initial bombing
- 1:54Speaker 4: campaign against Iran. This was the culmination of basically, I
- 1:57Speaker 4: mean decades of him wishing to in his words, eradicate
- 2:02Speaker 4: the Mothership of terror. I mean, he was really pushing
- 2:06Speaker 4: on this Iran campaign. And you know Trump then launched
- 2:10Speaker 4: this this these bombing strikes, and you know, Senator Graham
- 2:13Speaker 4: was very very overjoyed.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I say, and I want to play something that also
- 2:19Speaker 1: comes from your behind the scenes access, where in this
- 2:23Speaker 1: moment of confronting Iran, Graham compares Trump and bb NET
- 2:28Speaker 1: and Yahoo.
- 2:29Speaker 3: To other historical figures. Let's listen.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I said last last night that Trump and bb are
- 2:37Speaker 2: like Roosevelt and Churchill. I mean, they're the right to
- 2:41Speaker 2: guys to confront this evil alex.
- 2:45Speaker 1: That suggests that Graham perceived that this ultimately would relate
- 2:51Speaker 1: would result in the defeat of Iran.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not where we are now.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And there were times, I understand we expressed some misgivings
- 2:58Speaker 1: to you about directionality of where this was all heading.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Absolutely, yeah, I mean he really was very gung ho
- 3:04Speaker 4: at the start. He thought that President Trump was going
- 3:06Speaker 4: to prosecute this war in line with his thinking, are
- 3:09Speaker 4: you Senator Graham's thinking.
- 3:10Speaker 3: I meaning regime change? Absolutely yeah, regime change. You know,
- 3:14Speaker 3: it will all be what was of.
- 3:15Speaker 1: The Iranian Revolutionary Guard and remake Iran thereby remake the region.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Absolutely, And it was all going to take about three
- 3:22Speaker 4: weeks or so in his estimation.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Obviously that hasn't been the case.
- 3:26Speaker 4: He was getting very frustrated with the way the war
- 3:29Speaker 4: was being prosecuted by President Trump, and he was pushing back,
- 3:33Speaker 4: I think against a lot of others in the in
- 3:34Speaker 4: the administration that were cautioning, you know, to pause or
- 3:38Speaker 4: to allow the diplomatic efforts to work out. So yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 4: he was struggling with that over the few weeks once
- 3:47Speaker 4: the war started.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Absolutely, what's your takeaway of who Lindsey Graham was based
- 3:51Speaker 1: on all this close up observation.
- 3:53Speaker 4: I think, look, we were with him for four and
- 3:55Speaker 4: a half years, so there was, you know, a real
- 3:57Speaker 4: broad amount of geopolitical events that were taking place during
- 4:00Speaker 4: this time, Ukraine, Russia, the Israel Gaza War. You know,
- 4:05Speaker 4: he was trying to build a piece deal between Israel
- 4:08Speaker 4: and Saudi Arabia, and then obviously the Iram War itself.
- 4:11Speaker 4: I think he had a enormous impact in geopolitical issues,
- 4:16Speaker 4: far more than people actually think. I think in some
- 4:19Speaker 4: respects what this documentary will show it will prove the
- 4:22Speaker 4: oversized impact that he had. It will also show the
- 4:26Speaker 4: enormous respect that world leaders had with him. You know,
- 4:29Speaker 4: I was in the room with him and the Crown
- 4:31Speaker 4: Prince of Saudi Arabia and you see the deference that
- 4:34Speaker 4: the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia has to a US senator,
- 4:38Speaker 4: specifically Lindsay Graham, which was fascinating to see and I
- 4:41Speaker 4: think in some respects he also didn't realize or sometimes
- 4:45Speaker 4: he would say how he doesn't really understand why he
- 4:48Speaker 4: gets that kind of respect. You know, he's the centator
- 4:50Speaker 4: from South Carolina. But he did build these relationships over
- 4:54Speaker 4: a period of time. So he was a very very consequential, complicated,
- 4:58Speaker 4: controversial plant and very quick.
- 5:00Speaker 1: It wasn't just because he was good friends with Trump.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Great is something on his own?
- 5:03Speaker 4: Oh yeah, he did stuff under the Biden administration.
- 5:06Speaker 3: As well, Alex Holder. Great.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Great to have you with the important stuff. I appreciate
- 5:10Speaker 1: you sharing them with us. Please enjoy the scotch.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Thank you very much,
