- Brad Peters: Welcome to the Recipe for Results. This is your podcast extra for certification in the hotel, restaurant, and bar industry, brought to you by HRB Universal. This is the brief on the Columbia SC Serve Safe Food Protection Manager course. You know, this HRB Universal event is really the gold standard certification you need to keep your restaurant's doors legally open and your customers completely safe. First, let's talk about the why behind this August 26, 2026 event in Columbia, South Carolina. Well, the FDA food code actually mandates that the person in charge on duty must be a certified food protection manager. Since this course is ANCCFP accredited, you're getting exactly what the law requires. Think of it kind of like a driver's license for a commercial kitchen. If you don't have it, you literally can't legally operate the vehicle. Second, let's break down the logistics and the cost. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It costs $129 if you just want to knock out the two-hour exam at 2 p.m., or $179 for a fast-paced four-hour review lecture plus the exam. So can you just show up to the four-hour review, wing it, and pass? Finally, to answer that question, absolutely not. Self-study is strictly required before you arrive, utilizing their training portal and free mobile app. It's really a flipped classroom approach where the hard studying happens at home and the on-site time is just for fine-tuning and testing. The exam itself is fully electronic, so bring your own device or they'll provide an Amazon Fire tablet, though paper exams in multiple languages do require at least 20 days' notice. Ultimately, getting your restaurant compliant simply requires booking a ticket, doing your homework on the app, and showing up ready in Columbia on August 26th.
