- 0:00Well,
- 0:02welcome back everybody to the Daily Ripples podcast.
- 0:07I'm Pastor Mike and we have with us Corey.
- 0:10And Corey has already told me that he's not going to be the host or
- 0:13the co-host today. He said he's just going to be here. So with all that
- 0:17being said, we're going to jump right in to August 3rd, Shaped for Service.
- 0:21And our devotional starts with the stone. God's work in my
- 0:25life is not only for my benefit but for the good of those around
- 0:28me. Ripple 1 is practical. Today, I will look for
- 0:32opportunities to be useful rather than noticed. I will serve where I can,
- 0:36remembering that even small acts of kindness can reflect God's love
- 0:40to others. Ripple 2, spiritual. The Father calls me into a life
- 0:44of love and service. Jesus shows me that greatness is found
- 0:49in serving others. The Holy Spirit equips me to love people
- 0:52well and to be useful wherever God places me.
- 0:56And as always, we'll save our prayer for the end
- 1:01of our episode. Now, I'll start today,
- 1:04Corey, with a Bible passage. We'll jump into that
- 1:08right off the wham because this part about being of service,
- 1:12and especially in the spiritual ripple about greatness found in serving
- 1:16others, I mean, that comes straight out of the Gospel of Mark
- 1:19in the 10th chapter, and it's verses 43
- 1:23through 45. And essentially what it says is the passage about whoever
- 1:27wants to be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven must become the least and
- 1:30must be a servant to all. Right. And so, I mean, the Bible affirms
- 1:34that whether we're talking about our life of faith,
- 1:37whether we're talking about our work in recovery, just life in general,
- 1:40I mean, God is calling us to be of service to other people.
- 1:44Right. And, you know, as it kind of talks about, I mean,
- 1:47it, it, The title itself is Shaped for Service, but for me,
- 1:51I think about the fact of my experience, right?
- 1:54And my experience in the program and my experience in my life of faith has
- 1:58been that whenever I just go
- 2:01wherever God calls me and serve whoever God
- 2:05puts in front of me, because I think you say this all the time,
- 2:08we're all God's kids, right? Which means that everybody's my brother and
- 2:11sister, no matter what they look like, no matter what they talk about, no matter
- 2:15if they share the same faith that I do. If somebody's in need
- 2:18and I have the ability to meet that need in any way,
- 2:22then I need to be willing to do that. And that when I do,
- 2:25and this is where the experience comes in, I find my soul strengthened.
- 2:30I found my spirits uplifted even. You know, it's hard
- 2:34to describe the joy, you know, that we experience by just
- 2:39sitting down and talking to another dude about this stuff. You know, you've talked about
- 2:41that many times. What do you got for us? Well, you know,
- 2:45in here it says, you know, and this is one of the things,
- 2:49like, I think when we word things, we want
- 2:52it to be appealing to others versus what it really is. And that's like
- 2:56the paradox, right? That's kind of like what a paradox is anyways. Like, it's almost
- 3:01a lighter form. So like when you put in here, God's work in my life
- 3:05is not only for my benefit. Well,
- 3:10I think we're talking about the exact
- 3:13thing we're talking about, but when I think about it like that, it's almost like
- 3:17I'm trying to convince you to convince somebody, hey, go help somebody,
- 3:20right? Because that's what we're— in these recovery
- 3:24rooms, for some reason, it's turned in from people walking
- 3:27in and let's try to convince them, hey, you want to try to
- 3:32convince them this way of life rather than them being hopeless and saying,
- 3:35hey, this is what I do. And there's
- 3:40no wiggle room. This is just what I do, and if you want what I
- 3:43have and are willing to go to any length to get it,
- 3:46you'll just do this. That's the thing that's always said. If you want what we
- 3:50have, do what we do. Right. So it's like, and I think we've been accustomed
- 3:54to say things like this. So first,
- 3:58it's complimenting me, right? God's work in my life is
- 4:01not only for my benefit. So it's complimenting me first, right?
- 4:06But for the good of those around me. And I think, you know, I try
- 4:09to— the way I talk to dudes, I'm always talking like
- 4:12that, right? Trying to do this convincing. And, you know,
- 4:16and this is going to probably sound a little convincing too, but, you know,
- 4:19the only place in the literature of Alcoholics Anonymous
- 4:23that I have found so far where it talks about emotional
- 4:27sobriety, is in the first page of the 12-step.
- 4:32And that's interesting, right? The only place in all the literature— in the 12-step,
- 4:36in the 12 and 12? In the 12 and 12. It doesn't say those words
- 4:39in the— right, right. Big book at all. It's definitely more of a modern concept.
- 4:43Yeah, I know that. But so like, you know, but it stands
- 4:47true. Like, you know, to benefit— when I give of
- 4:50myself, I do benefit. But you know, my significant
- 4:55other said it last night, and you know, I've been thinking about this today.
- 4:58Where, you know, when I call you, I'm not just calling you,
- 5:02I'm calling to seek God. Yeah. When I'm helping somebody, I'm not
- 5:06helping someone for anything else but to seek God. And if I can
- 5:09keep that more in my peripherals, like, you know, I guess
- 5:14like in my sight versus— I was talking to a dude today about this,
- 5:17like, man, like if I'm in the results business,
- 5:22I'm not gonna get the results I want. But if I'm in the God business,
- 5:26and I want to just seek God through going to these meetings,
- 5:29helping people, calling someone, helping someone on the side
- 5:33of the road versus what it looks like as a man versus,
- 5:38hey, I'm just doing this for God. I'm just trying to seek God
- 5:41through this, trying to grow my relationship closer with God versus,
- 5:46hey, I want to look cool. Hey, I want to make
- 5:50sure people see me on the side of the road changing this old lady's tire.
- 5:53Yeah. Right? And if they don't, I'm going to take a photo and put it
- 5:56on Facebook. I'm going to make sure to tell somebody about it right after it.
- 5:59And I'm gonna say, hey, you know, I'm gonna make it sound very humble
- 6:02too. Yeah. Not like— that's a weird way to say that,
- 6:06but no, it made perfect sense. Um, so I was
- 6:09thinking about what, you know, she was talking about last night. And she, you know,
- 6:13she was talking about on page 46 of the Big Book. And she
- 6:16was talking about, we found that God does not make too hard turns
- 6:20with those who seek him. And I've been
- 6:23thinking about that all day today, actually, because like,
- 6:28I'm looking at it from a completely different view today because what
- 6:32is seek? I could have used to tell you that seeking would've meant
- 6:37seeking out literature, seeking out knowledge.
- 6:40And when me and this dude were talking today,
- 6:44he was like, I don't want to waste my time. And I told him,
- 6:47I said, hey man, do you think you're wasting your time on your knees praying?
- 6:50Do you think you're wasting your time with a pen and paper or reading?
- 6:54Because it's the same concept. And I'm seeing that today as one.
- 6:58And I've kind of always seen it as one, but I'm seeing it completely as
- 7:01one today, a little bit better. And I don't know, that's what I was thinking
- 7:04about. Well, I think it gets into the
- 7:08root of, and you were talking kind of all around this,
- 7:11what are our motivations when it comes to service
- 7:15work or working with others or what have you? What is motivating me? If I'm
- 7:19working with a newcomer or somebody who's trying to get
- 7:23sober from alcohol or drugs, right?
- 7:26And if I'm doing it because I want to accomplish
- 7:30their sobriety, you know what I mean? Like, I want a
- 7:34success story, right? So that I can feel like I'm
- 7:39a good sponsor, right? That's the wrong motivation.
- 7:42But that's the motivation I think that you were kind of speaking to or around.
- 7:45And, but if I'm saying I want to be a good sponsor for
- 7:49this person, because I find God when I do
- 7:53that. That's a totally different set of motivations. And the problem is,
- 7:56and the reason why it's so natural to slip into, even when I wrote
- 8:00The Stone that way about not only being for my benefit, for the good of
- 8:04those around me, because yeah, I mean, there are, we're built
- 8:08as human beings to not put forth any effort
- 8:12unless we can see a benefit. And if I don't see a benefit,
- 8:16to it, you know, in my own life and my own spirit, then I
- 8:20don't even want to start on it. But the thing is,
- 8:24if I stay in that place, I'm never going to do anything.
- 8:28Right. You know, I'm— and if I didn't do anything,
- 8:31then I wouldn't receive that benefit. You know, I wouldn't receive that
- 8:34connection with my higher power because, you know, you brought up about,
- 8:38you know, seeking God. And usually when I think about seeking God,
- 8:41I think about, you know, going to church or spending time in prayer and meditation.
- 8:45But the thing is, I mean, and you rightly pointed it out
- 8:49again, you were kind of dancing around it, right? In Matthew 25
- 8:55is when Jesus, you know, and we talked just last week,
- 8:59I think last Thursday on our podcast, you know, I think I read
- 9:03the whole parable of the talents, you know, out of the Message translation.
- 9:07And right after that is when Jesus talks about, you know,
- 9:11in the kingdom come, the sheep will be separated from the goats. And that's when
- 9:14he gives one of the most famous passages in the Bible, which is that anytime
- 9:18you fed the hungry and clothed the
- 9:22naked and served those in need, basically all these things
- 9:25you have done for the least of these, you have done for me.
- 9:29And so it is about seeking God,
- 9:32really is about being of service. It's not about—
- 9:36yes, you can seek God in prayer and in worship, but you also need to
- 9:40be seeking God in service to others. You know,
- 9:43on page 130 of the Big Book, it says, and this
- 9:47is one of my favorite paragraphs in this book because it
- 9:51kind of summarizes what we're doing. It says, those of us who have spent much
- 9:55time in the world of spiritual make-believe have eventually seen
- 9:59the childishness of it. This dream world has
- 10:02been replaced by a great sense of purpose, accompanied by a growing consciousness
- 10:06of the power of God in our lives. We have come to
- 10:10believe he would like us to keep our heads in the clouds with
- 10:14him, but that our feet ought to be firmly planted on earth.
- 10:18That is where our fellow travelers are, and that is where our work must be
- 10:21done. Absolutely. And like, you know, so that, you know, that if
- 10:26I look, the way I look at that is so, it's just spot on,
- 10:30right? And I can't explain it any better than that.
- 10:34Well, and the book also tells us, and again, I know you
- 10:38got to be proud anytime that I bring out a passage of the book,
- 10:41and especially if I list a page number, right? So on page
- 10:4577, and you probably already know where I'm going with this, the Big Book
- 10:49tells us that our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be of maximum service
- 10:54to God and the people about us, to God and the
- 10:58people about us, which is just another way of saying back in 1939,
- 11:02or when this was published, of love God and
- 11:06love your neighbor as you love yourself. Yeah. And that's what the whole thing is
- 11:09all about. I think that's— I don't think we could say anything else
- 11:14on it. You know, sometimes it's just one of those times when, when you're done,
- 11:16you're done. Yeah. And it's just time to pray, right? So let's pray,
- 11:20and everyone can enjoy some music for the rest of their drive-in this morning.
- 11:24Father God, make me useful to you and the people around
- 11:28me. Through your Holy Spirit, help me serve with humility and love.
- 11:32Shape my life through the example of Jesus. Amen.
