- 0:34six so eight five three five forty three forty three. That's five three five
- 0:38four three four three. I think it's officially spring, isn't it, Andrew?
- 0:43As far as like the people at SO, what does that mean for
- 0:48us? Big picture stuff? Andy? Andrew I called you Andy, by
- 0:51the way, you told us a couple of weeks ago that they use Yeah,
- 0:55I'm sorry, Andrew. I like Andrew sounds it's a very fitting fitting
- 0:59name. What does that be for for us homeowners and folks that have their
- 1:03casas? What what does spring mean to them? And what should we be
- 1:07thinking about when it comes to taking care of our house. You know what's
- 1:11funny is are you getting a revert? I'm not. I don't think you
- 1:15won't be anymore either. Cool, So, uh, you know it's funny
- 1:22is I heard you chuckle when that song played and I was like, oh
- 1:26my gosh, is my webcam on? Can he see me dancing? Because
- 1:30I was totally dancing. You know, it's funny as you say, all
- 1:34right, it's spring, and you know what I thought, I said,
- 1:37I thought today. You know, I don't want to just talk about gutters
- 1:38and roofing and insulation, even though it's like my favorite three things in the
- 1:42world. Uh, you know, it's spring. What are some important home
- 1:49maintenance tips for spring? What are the things we should check after winter?
- 1:53Even though we didn't really have much of a winter, we've had some some
- 1:57very odd weather. I see northern Wisconsin just been getting hammered with snow and
- 2:01we got a bunch of much needed rain earlier this week. So that's all
- 2:06good. And you know, Sean, I can't make this up. So
- 2:08I actually I know what I think is really important, but I wanted to
- 2:13get some information from another expert, and I went on HGTV dot com with
- 2:19fifteen home maintenance tips for spring, and the first one that comes up is
- 2:25inspect your shingles. Oh yes, I didn't make that up. That was
- 2:30on their website, but it is very important because after winter with ice and
- 2:35snow and ice damming cold wind, it is important to check the shingles.
- 2:40And that's something that we we offer that you know, that's part of our
- 2:45roof restore or roof repair program. Because I've mentioned this many times that we
- 2:50run into a lot of roofs that just they're not that old, you know,
- 2:53ten twelve years old, and they just weren't done properly. The details
- 2:59weren't done, so they get leaks when they shouldn't. But the shingles aren't
- 3:01bad. So you know, we have a restore program and we don't just
- 3:05like to say repair because you know, a repair would be like, hey,
- 3:08i've got a pipe boot leaking, you know, where event comes through
- 3:14the roof. We'll just throw some you know, blackjack on there, throw
- 3:16some cock on there. That's a repair that's not going to last that long.
- 3:21We want to restore, so we want to check the entire roof,
- 3:23do a free sixteen point inspection and let you know about all it. Lets
- 3:27you know about the fiberglass matting. Lets you know about granular loss. How
- 3:30are your valleys looking? How is all the flash how are all the fat
- 3:34flashings looking? How is your ventilation? What does your attic look like?
- 3:38How's your chimney doing? We want to check all of that stuff, all
- 3:40the major leak points, all the important things that go wrong before the shingles
- 3:46are actually ready to be torn off and thrown in a landfill. So that
- 3:50was number one. Inspect your roof. Number two was actually again I can't
- 3:58make this up. Your gutters. It's really like played into what I wanted
- 4:03to talk about. But check the gutters. Make sure that after the weight
- 4:08of ice and snow in the winter, they haven't sagged, They're not misformed,
- 4:12they're still sloping properly. The ice didn't fall and create any any holes
- 4:16in the gutters. We see that all the time. We'll see it where
- 4:19the snow and ice slid off the roof and actually will rip the gutters off
- 4:24the roof or hit the front of it and make it. We call it
- 4:27a bird beak. It bird beaks out. So now every time it rains
- 4:30heavy, that's where the gutters overflow. So that's the importance of our gutter
- 4:33shutter system and why we replace the entire thing, because if we're just to
- 4:39put a cover over the top of your existing gutters, it doesn't mean that
- 4:42your existing gutters necessarily work properly. So we want to put the whole system
- 4:46up. We know it's going to work right. We also guarantee We also
- 4:49guarantee it won't be damaged from the weight of ice or snow just because it
- 4:53is that thick, that big, and that strong. Next next on their
- 4:59list was examine your chimney, which I believe kind of goes along with the
- 5:01roofing because it is part of the roofing system. But that's something that we
- 5:04check. We checked chimneys. Chimneys are a major leak point. Typically aren't
- 5:11flashtright chip typically don't have crickets behind them. Cricket is just a it's almost
- 5:16like a little mini roof that goes behind a chimney that channels water away from
- 5:20the back of it. So you imagine all the water that can pile up,
- 5:24or snow and ice that can pile up behind the back of a chimney.
- 5:27It's kind of like putting a wall up. That's the wall of that
- 5:30chimney. We want a channel water away from it. So that's all something
- 5:34that we would do with our free sixteen point inspection. The next maintenance issue
- 5:41on the list was check the attic. Again, I am not making this
- 5:46up. Anybody can google this, but it was check the roof, check
- 5:50the gutters, check the chimney, check the attic. These are things that
- 5:53we all handle. Why do you think, you know, why would you
- 5:57want to check the attic. Well, when our house is all closed up
- 6:01in the winter and we're cooking and we're cleaning, and we're bathing and we're
- 6:08heating our home, that hot air rises. Whereas in the summer and in
- 6:13the spring we have our windows open a lot more so we have a lot
- 6:15more airflow. But in the winter everything's closed up and all that warm,
- 6:18hot, moist air goes up into the attic. So we want to check
- 6:20our attic to make sure that we've got proper ventilation, to make sure that
- 6:25we're not creating mold issues, because that's something that we see very very regularly
- 6:30when a roof got done or an attic got redone and they didn't make sure
- 6:35there was proper ventilation. Now, all that warm moist air gets trapped up
- 6:39there and it's just the perfect conditions to start seeing mold, which is not
- 6:45good for anything. Mold eats wood, Mold makes people sick. It's bad.
- 6:49So making sure those gutters are working properly, making sure we're checking our
- 6:55roof. We didn't lose shingles in the winter, we didn't create leaks.
- 6:59Just making sure that they're going to make it through another season, and then
- 7:01checking the attic, making sure we've got got proper ventilation and we didn't create
- 7:08a mold issue during the winter months. So these are some of the more
- 7:12important things to get done right away, and these are all things that we
- 7:15can take care of for anyone listening. One of the things that's really impressive
- 7:20about working with your guys at our Stop Services. Of course, you guys
- 7:25redid our roof a number of years ago. It still looks If anyone drives
- 7:29by, you will know it looks like it just was done. It looks
- 7:31it still looks absolutely amazing. One of the things that I love that you
- 7:36guys do is we talk about some of these areas for the spring inspection,
- 7:41whether the roof of the gutters, chimney. The attic is your gun,
- 7:45and God bless them for doing it. Like it wasn't like like when they
- 7:49went up in the attic. It wasn't just like I'm gonna poke my head
- 7:53up there and just scan the flashlight and kind of do an assessment, like
- 7:58went up in our attic and it's like, our roof is in our attic
- 8:03space isn't particularly tall. Like crawling through there, like looking in like the
- 8:09little court, like the little nooks and crannies between the woodwork and the and
- 8:13looking at the inslation, I thought, what is good? There is?
- 8:18There is not a corner cut there, Andrew there is? It is literally,
- 8:22yeah, people all the time, you know, well, why do
- 8:26you need to look at my attic? Look, we don't need to every
- 8:28time, but we want to. Some attic accesses are not the greatest.
- 8:35Some people don't have attic access. But what we like to tell people is
- 8:39that we can tell a lot about how their roof is working by looking up
- 8:41in their attic. We can see leaks that they haven't seen yet. We
- 8:46can see rotten wood that people haven't seen yet. I mean, one of
- 8:48the most important parts of your roof is your decking. What is the roof
- 8:52decking like? Is it in good shape? Is it planks? And we
- 8:56run into a lot of older homes that are you know that ninety hundred years
- 9:01old. Well, they didn't have plywood back then. They didn't have osb
- 9:05to put on roofs. They used wood planks like one by sixes or two
- 9:09by sixes whatever they wanted to put up there. Because when those homes were
- 9:15built, they used cedar shakes, so they didn't need a full surface,
- 9:18and they had gaps in them. Well, here's here's the deal. A
- 9:24lot of people get new roofs put on and then they tear that roof off
- 9:28and go, oh darn it, you have planks. This roof's gonna cost
- 9:33you an extra four thousand dollars. Now, I mean, what a kick
- 9:35in the shorts. Right. We want to be upfront with all of that
- 9:39stuff. So if we can see it from the underneath, we can say,
- 9:43okay, there's planks up there, and they're spaced out more than an
- 9:46eighth of an inch. We have to redeck this, and the reason being
- 9:50because asphalt shingles, there's so many nails that go in there that with that
- 9:54spacing there's just a certain percentage of nails that they're not going to hit anything.
- 10:00Now we can't give a wind rating, you're gonna have easier blowoffs.
- 10:03When the cedar shakes were put on, it was totally fine. They spaced
- 10:07them how they needed them. So we want to look up in the attic
- 10:09make sure the underdecking is good. Sometimes we can get up there and we
- 10:13can see problems because we can see daylight. We can see daylight where we
- 10:18shouldn't be able to see daylight where flashing should be. So it's very important
- 10:22to look up in the attic. And there's a lot of roofers I'm sure
- 10:26that don't. We just don't want to have any surprises. Also, a
- 10:30roofing system works well when the insulation and air ceiling is done properly. So
- 10:35if we've got proper insulation, air ceiling, and ventilation, that's all part
- 10:39of the roofing system in my book, it is in our company's book.
- 10:43We want to make sure that's all done properly. So if we're going to
- 10:46get up there and inspect the roof, we want to check out the attic
- 10:50as well, and we'll give recommendations. A lot of times we get up
- 10:54there and say, hey, you know what, you've got air ceiling,
- 10:56you've got great insulation and great ventilation, perfect, and the under decking looks
- 11:00good. All we're going to need to do is replace this roof. There
- 11:01should be no surprises. But if we see wood that looks rotten or moldy,
- 11:07and we see improper ventilation with no air ceiling, we're going to say,
- 11:11hey, all right, we've got some rotten wood. A lot of
- 11:15times that rotten wood is not because the roof is leaking. A lot of
- 11:18times it's because of the conditions up in the attic with no air ceiling,
- 11:22with improper ventilation and insulation. So we'll say, hey, this roof needs
- 11:26to be replaced, but we're also going to have to replace a bunch of
- 11:28decking. And here's why, because we have we need to fix the ventilation
- 11:35and we need to fix the air ceiling. Otherwise, this moisture is just
- 11:37going to keep coming up there, condensing on the wood, creating mold and
- 11:41creating rot. So we want to fix it right the first time and create
- 11:46something that lasts a lifetime for the homeowners we work with. And when you
- 11:50look at the warranty, you look at the type of workmanship, you look
- 11:52at everything and get with large Storme Services, you definitely want to make sure
- 11:56you're having your your an. How is the time here to get that roof
- 11:58inspect that have you gutters checked out as well? And of course home performance.
- 12:01Larsen Home Services they can do all of those things for you. All
- 12:05I got to do this morning, pick up the phone, give Andrew and
- 12:07the team a call their telephone number six so eight five three five forty three
- 12:11forty three. That's five three five forty three forty three. Trust me when
- 12:15I tell you this, you will be absolutely impressed by what they do with
- 12:18Larsen Home Services. Me mentioned we talk about, you know, getting up
- 12:22in the attic and stuff. One of the things I really like too is
- 12:24getting like a very detailed you know, before we went to contract, before
- 12:28we started anything, your guys came and gave me a very detail. This
- 12:33is what this is what we saw, this is what's going to need to
- 12:35be replaced, this is what's part of the part of the project. And
- 12:37as you were talking there and talking about some of the you know, some
- 12:41of the decking and the boards that are up there is a part of me
- 12:43wonders, and I wonder if there's probab. There's probably if I go back,
- 12:46and there's probably a note on it. I think part of why they
- 12:50were going so far into the attic was I think there was a spot and
- 12:54if it maybe maybe it did hang in. It's so long ago, Andrew.
- 12:56Again, I believe that, Sean, I believe that we'd have to
- 13:00replace some Ronnie. Yeah, and I think that was what they Yeah,
- 13:03what they were doing. So that was again this is we talk about your
- 13:07home, you talk about your investment, and you talk about something that's going
- 13:09to last long time. Again, I like to point out it's long enough
- 13:13that I don't remember all the details. But again, if you drive by
- 13:16the house, you can you would think that it was just put on yesterday.
- 13:18It's an amazing job. That's a great thing about working with Andrew and
- 13:22the team today today. Pick up phone, give him a call six eight
- 13:24five three five forty three forty three. That's five three five four three four
- 13:28three for Larsten Home Services. Andrew, it's always great chatting with you,
- 13:31my friend. You enjoy this fantastic day you as well. We'll talk next
