- 0:11Five minutes past the hour. It is the first show in the month of
- 0:16November, Show thirty nine of The Morning Show with Preston Scott. That's Grant
- 0:21Allen over there in Studio one A. I'm here in Studio one B.
- 0:24I'm joined by co founder Talent Training Group, co host Talent Outdoors, and
- 0:32my friend Jad Johnson. Hello, sir, good morning. I think there's
- 0:35three of us here together now that love the season. Man put my jacket
- 0:40on this morning. Hey, yeah, buddy, this makes me happy.
- 0:45Yes, sir, we've been talking about and you heard coming in, we
- 0:50were discussing the trial of Charlie Edelson, and I just want to touch on
- 0:57what happened to Dan Markel being surveilled and finding himself unprepared and he was killed
- 1:03as a result of it. But it seems to me that in the nine
- 1:07years that have happened, we're seeing more people being followed home, not necessarily
- 1:11for those reasons and all of that. But you know, we were talking
- 1:15about, you know, most people don't have a reason to think that they'll
- 1:21be targeted, right They don't until they are, until until it's too late.
- 1:25You know, It's it's kind of easy to uh, it's easy and
- 1:29pleasant to be oblivious, uh to things like that. You know, we
- 1:34we would we would all rather just not even think about evil existing in the
- 1:38world. That's a that's a pretty happy existence. Unfortunately, it's also uh
- 1:44it's fantasy. It's a fantasy world. You know, they're there are evil
- 1:47people in the world that do bad things for a lot of different reasons.
- 1:52But most of the time it's not a professional hit, you know, like
- 1:57in the Mark Mark. Ok. It's it's greed or them wanting to take
- 2:04what you have. That's that's the primary, you know, the primary reason
- 2:08for a lot of those crimes that you're talking about where somebody gets followed home
- 2:12from the bank or followed home from a shopping trip where they walked out of
- 2:15them all from they want what you just bought at the store, they want
- 2:21your money. You know. Home invasions, we see a lot of those
- 2:24now they you know, they want the drugs. There are a lot of
- 2:27times home invasions are you know, involving the drug trade. So that's the
- 2:32primary cause of this stuff. But people that are going about their daily lives
- 2:38and going to the bank and taking out cash for the weekend, or or
- 2:44you know, going to the bank from their store or whatever to deposit large
- 2:49sums of cash. That's those times like that when you're obviously, whether intentionally
- 2:55or by necessity, displaying wealth, you better be paying attention because if you
- 3:02do it often enough and you become predictable enough, somebody else is The more
- 3:08you do it, the more likely somebody else is going to notice it and
- 3:10pay attention to it. And that's putting yourself You're you're putting yourself in a
- 3:15bad situation. When someone makes the decision that they need to take more responsibility
- 3:22for their personal safety and that of their family, what are the first obstacles
- 3:25that they have to overcome? You know? The I think the first obstacle
- 3:30is having the having the mentality too. It's difficult for a lot of people
- 3:38to come to realization that they may have to hurt somebody else. Does that
- 3:44makes sense? It's it's a mental it's a mental thing that a lot of
- 3:47people have a hard time dealing with it that I you know, I just
- 3:50don't know that I could ever hurt somebody else to protect myself. And that's
- 3:54a that's that's human nature. We're not we're not programmed to beol towards one
- 4:00another. In nature, Can a sheep become a sheep dog? Absolutely,
- 4:04it's just a matter of the sheep waking up sometimes. You know, I'm
- 4:09saying, I'm not. I realize that I'm a sheep, and I need
- 4:12to I need to grow some teeth, you know that. And I need
- 4:15to be able to take care of myself. As a long term law enfessment
- 4:19enforcement professional, you still interact and intersect with the industry all the time with
- 4:25former colleagues. Is it fair to say, yes, we've always had sin,
- 4:30we've had evil, et cetera, et cetera, but it is more
- 4:32prevalent now. I think it's fair to say that in today's world. I'm
- 4:38just and that's just from my personal experience. It's it's you know, there
- 4:43is less value on human life right now, at this time, at this
- 4:47moment in time, moment in history. There's probably we haven't seen this low
- 4:53of a value on human life in hundreds, if not thousands of years.
- 4:58And that's all over the world. That's not just that's not just us,
- 5:00that's that's look look at the news. I mean, there is just so
- 5:04little value placed on on human life and the moral fibers of our world have
- 5:12started to loosen up so bad that it's just, you know, it's it's
- 5:15it's I hate it. It's not the world I want my kids to live
- 5:18in or to leave behind. But that's where we are back with Jade Johnson
- 5:27of the Talent Training Group again. Talent Outdoors. All kinds of ways to
- 5:30interact and oh, by the way, in the month of November, we
- 5:33do have a fifth Wednesday, which means Q and A and uh and so
- 5:40we'll have an opportunity to take calls. You guys need to talk about that
- 5:43on the show the week before. Yeah, that if you want to ask
- 5:46us questions, here we go. We have to have both of you asking
- 5:50a lot of us. We got to have both of you in on that
- 5:55Wednesday because you guys don't get to take calls. You have to guess,
- 6:00but you don't get to take calls. And I think it would be hilariously
- 6:01fun. I think we had to do it. I'm down all right.
- 6:05The shooting in Maine, as you and I have discussed off air, lots
- 6:11of questions, lots of questions. We'll just leave that there. What others
- 6:15have pointed out, though, is that It's interesting. Maine is, surprisingly
- 6:20being in the northeast, a very gun friendly state, open carry, constitutional
- 6:26carry the whole nine yards, and a lot of folks in that state know
- 6:30how to handle a firearm, very prevalent there. But no one in two
- 6:33different locations was either prepared or was carrying because liquor was served, I believe
- 6:41in both of those locations. Yep. And that's you know, that makes
- 6:46it a soft target no matter how you cut it. Now, I'm not
- 6:48saying we should allow open carry in the bars. What about concealed carry in
- 6:54the bars? You know, because bad guys are gonna do whatever they're gonna
- 6:59do. Are But then you're also running the risk of mixing alcohol and firearms,
- 7:04and that's never a good idea either. No, buts let's go to
- 7:10the butt thing, because here's what I've said. I don't go to those
- 7:14types of places. But there are restaurants that serve alcohol, and you can
- 7:16be sitting in a chili somewhere having a meal and the bar is right there.
- 7:21So by law, you're not supposed to carry correct incorrect, No,
- 7:26you can sit in the restaurant, you can go to chili's armed conceal carry
- 7:32sit not at the bar and order dinner. Perfectly legal. You can't sit
- 7:38at the bar at Chili's. But the way chilis using Chili's as the example,
- 7:43they have half of the thing as a restaurant, but the other half
- 7:46they have tables and they serve food right by the bar. That's correct,
- 7:51and so that's okay. You're fine not sitting in the bar section. So
- 7:57you ask the hostess, can I please sit on this side? You don't
- 8:01have to give her an explanation. I don't want to sit over there.
- 8:03I want to sit over here. I don't want to sit at the bar.
- 8:07Or you take an Applebe's or something that kind of has the bullpen in
- 8:09the middle, or well, that's what I'm saying, because well, for
- 8:13example, there are restaurants that are closing that half the food the restaurant half,
- 8:18and they're serving food in the bar half because they don't have enough staff
- 8:20eat somewhere else. I mean, that's just that. But if I can't,
- 8:24if I can't carry in the restaurant, I'm not going to go to
- 8:26the restaurant. So you can't see I would go ahead and carry or that
- 8:33and make an explanation that hey, I'm not sitting at the bar having a
- 8:37drink. I'm sitting at the table because the other side closed. Yeah,
- 8:41because the other side was closed, and I'm drinking sweet tea. Because the
- 8:43spirit of that law is to keep somebody from walking in a bar sober,
- 8:50carrying a gun and getting getting plowed at the bar. And now you're armed,
- 8:54and your faculties are not all with you, and you're armed, and
- 8:58that's not a good idea. So you're okay with there being a prohibition inside
- 9:03an establishment that is a bar, Well, yeah, i am, because
- 9:09that's generally why people go to the bar is to drink, and a lot
- 9:13of people drink to excess. And even if they're not drinking to excess,
- 9:20you have to admit you don't drink, but your faculties or inhibitions are lowered.
- 9:26Your faculties are lessened, and your decision making is usually not great.
- 9:31And as inspiramuto watching others, their bravery index goes up. Yeah, you
- 9:35get ten foot there's a reason ten foot tall and bulletproof is a saying,
- 9:39So you know, So it's just it's a bad idea, and just don't
- 9:43put yourself in the situations that's that's easy. That's an easy out. WU
- 9:48f l A on your phone with the iHeart Radio app and on hundreds of
- 9:52devices like Alexa, Google Home, Xbox and Sonos and Ihearts Radio season personal
- 10:01Defense segment here in the Morning Show with Preston Scott first and third Wednesdays,
- 10:05and when there's a fifth we do a little Q and A. So we
- 10:07got we got all three of them this week or this month. We've got
- 10:11J. D. Johnson here, Charlie Strickland in the next visit. And
- 10:15then hopefully if I can twist their arms, both of them when our fifth
- 10:18Wednesday rolls around. But a couple more stories in the news. I was
- 10:22sharing the story with you in Portland road rage incident. Guy taps on a
- 10:26guy's window because he's blocking traffic and he finally kind of gets fed up with
- 10:31it, and the guy rolls down the window shoots him in the chest.
- 10:35Another guy witnessing it comes out videotapes the shooter. He gets shot. So
- 10:41the good news is we've got someone arrested. The bad news is this was
- 10:45all over somebody tapping somebody on his windows saying hey move yeah. Yeah,
- 10:50that's that's obviously from the story you read read to me there on the on
- 10:56the break. That guy's got problems the shooters. He's claiming self defense and
- 11:01all this, and he don't have a prayer. I mean, that's just
- 11:05it. It was a homicide. So you know, you can't justify shooting
- 11:09somebody because they tap on your wind and say, hey the light turned green.
- 11:13Go And he admitted the man was unarmed. Yeah, and then you
- 11:18can't say, well, I felt menaced by the guy videotaping me, so
- 11:20it shut him too. Well, yeah, okay, you've got problems.
- 11:28He's going to go to prison. Rules of engagement, though, are such
- 11:31that we are again we're in a different era and road rage is becoming more
- 11:37and more and more prevalent. Oh yeah it is. And you just have
- 11:41to also sit back and go what's motivating this person's behavior. When you're seeing
- 11:48outlandish behavior, you have to sit back and go, what's motivating them?
- 11:52What's going on? And is it worth me risking my life because I'm angry,
- 11:58you know, keeping control olier. You know, we all get angry.
- 12:01There's that's that's very human. You know, Sometimes it's time to say
- 12:07take a step back and go is it worth being angry over is it outside
- 12:11of my control? When the guy that that's now dead because he felt what
- 12:16the need to go tap on the guy's window, probably could have just driven
- 12:20around him and kept on going and go yeah, you idiot and whatever,
- 12:22and you know, the whole finger giving the finger back and forth and all
- 12:26that. Just just don't go down. That the only real way, it
- 12:31doesn't matter whether it's a fistfight or a gunfight. You the only way to
- 12:37avoid getting your knuckles bloody, and either one of those is to not have
- 12:41it at all. If you can possibly avoid it. You don't ever want
- 12:46to engage in that. If you're reacting to save a life, that's one
- 12:52I'm here. If if the if someone else is already started, the life
- 12:56threatening, the the substantial life threatening. Even claims like this guy claims self
- 13:01defense, it's not gonna stand up because you have to convince twelve reasonable people
- 13:07on a jury that it was your actions were reasonable and necessary. That's that's
- 13:13sadly for him, he's already sworn out in a statement and he's doomed himself.
- 13:16He's done. Yeah yeah, yeah my gun jammedor I would have shot
- 13:20him twice. Yeah, So he's got no reasonable defense. But you know,
- 13:26it's just sometimes it's better to walk away, be the bigger person,
- 13:31walk away, avoid the fight, because that way we know we're gonna win
- 13:33if we can avoid it. If we can avoid the fight, that's a
- 13:37guaranteed I'm gonna win and walk away from this uninjured. You know, you
- 13:41say win, And it occurs to me that, you know, because I
- 13:45get annoyed people that drive recklessly and dangerously and aggressively on the roads anytime.
- 13:50Me too, But I'm learning that right now, and really in general,
- 13:54that's a lot like trying to win an argument on Twitter, Facebook or anywhere
- 13:58else. You're not gonna change anybody's mind, that's correct, And if you
- 14:03think of it that way, you just say, yeah, I'm not wasting
- 14:05my time exactly, And that's exactly the attitude to have. I'll yell and
- 14:09scream inside the car by myself. Charlie makes fun of me because I will
- 14:13talk so bad about somebody driving stupid around me. But I don't do a
- 14:18lot of hand gesture. I don't do hand gestures, and I don't roll
- 14:20the window down, and I don't slam on brakes, and I don't you
- 14:24know, engage further in it. I might talk, you know, really
- 14:28bad about them and their entire lineage, but I'm not gonna do anything to
- 14:33pick a fight, because that's just not smart. If an accident does happen
- 14:37and you're dealing with somebody that was driving aggressively and this could escalate and get
- 14:43bad, you get on the horn with police right away. Absolutely, and
- 14:48everybody, you know, if you got to everybody's got hands free stuff on
- 14:52their phone, and it's it's a real easy you know, hey, whatever
- 14:56your device is, and your call nine to one one, you know,
- 15:00and the car will call nine one one for you or hit the on star
- 15:03button or hit the whatever the help me button. Yeah, immediately if this
- 15:09is going on now, you know, and if it's it's a if it's
- 15:11a passing, fleeting thing, just let it go and take take a right
- 15:16to you know, make a series of you know, a right and some
- 15:18lefts and move on, move on. You know, nothing to see here.
- 15:24It's just yourself away from this person and let them keep driving crazy.
- 15:28And it doesn't hurt to call the police say you got a reckless drivers.
- 15:31This is the making model and tag number, and you know, make a
- 15:33report. It's you know, it's it's no country for old men. Live
- 15:39for another day, not to advertise the movie, but it's it's really we're
- 15:43living in no country for old men. It's it's just you know, sign
- 15:48of the times, thirty six minutes past the hour, it's Wednesday on the
- 15:52Morning show. It is November first, just saying it feels cooler. But
- 15:58that change of the weather around Halloween happens every time, maybe a week or
- 16:02so, but and I know we'll have some warmer temperatures back, but it
- 16:04sure feels good today. All Right, I said the words, and I
- 16:08could almost hear your brain. People do buy firearms for Christmas gifts, yes,
- 16:17sir, and oftentimes it's husband buying for wife. Bad idea, guess
- 16:22I know, I know, And so I'm gonna tee you up because it's
- 16:26November. First, choose purses and pistols, fellas, don't do it?
- 16:33Explain first? Why not? Before we get to some of the things to
- 16:38consider under the why it's the one not is that it doesn't really matter what
- 16:47you think she should have. Guys, you need to let her choose because
- 16:52everybody's hands are different, everybody's feelings are different. Everybody's got you know,
- 17:00see it all the time at the store. Once fired, twice fired,
- 17:07you know, bringing them in. If you guys take guns back, the
- 17:11old trade ends and yeah we do. What are you trade for? I
- 17:14don't know yet, but my wife got the she doesn't like this. You
- 17:18know. How often is it? And I'm maybe I'm stereotyping unfairly, but
- 17:23it seems to me, based on the stories that I've heard, that guys
- 17:30tend to think the little lady wants or needs a revolver yep? Is that
- 17:36the common decision. Absolutely, And it's probably the dead opposite of the type
- 17:41of guns she should have. And snubnose thirty eight special revolvers breaker wrist are
- 17:45the most horrible things to shoot, even for us big guys. They're they're
- 17:52just the most atrocious choice for most people. Now, there are some people
- 17:56that just that's what they want. They are comfortab with it, They're fine
- 18:00with it, and I'm fine with it. It's not you know, it's
- 18:03a very formidable, functional gun. It's about you, and guys tend to
- 18:11not think of their wives sometimes as being the best way I can put it,
- 18:17is mechanically capable because the wife always gets him to get up off the
- 18:21couch to go fix things. Wives can run can openers. Guys they run
- 18:25sewing machines. I can't run the can opener at my house. I have
- 18:30to I just men and the can opener just don't speak the same language.
- 18:33And I don't mean to I'm not trying to tell you I'm an idiot.
- 18:37I'm just saying my wife can get that can opener to go to town with
- 18:41it, and I fight with that thing every time. But so women are
- 18:45very capable, and most women, given the choice, once they understand the
- 18:48mechanics, once they under get some training. You know, they tend to
- 18:53do very well with semi automatics. And some automatics are not what you think
- 18:59they are. Some guys you know from years and years ago, where they're
- 19:03unreliable and that they jam all the time. There's there that's definitely not the
- 19:07case. And little guns are more punishing on the hand and harder to shoot
- 19:12than bigger guns. So they always get them. Let's get them a cute
- 19:15little I want to get them a little little something thing carry in their purse.
- 19:21They got a purse if it's anything like you know, my mom and
- 19:23my wife, whatever else. They can put the kitchen sink in there.
- 19:26Yeah, you know, they could just about put an sbo's a short belt,
- 19:30right, But it's that fallacy that a small little firearm is going to
- 19:34be easier to handle when it's absolutely the dead opposite. It is the dead
- 19:40opposite. So get them a gift card, get them some training, get
- 19:44them some time at a range. Let them try it for themselves, and
- 19:48you will be You will think me later. So this segment of the radio
- 19:51program was dedicated to all of you thinking about buying your sweetheart a firearm,
- 19:57even if it's wives buying some one thing you think your husbands will like.
- 20:00Don't do it, no, because it's gonna be something wrong with it too.
- 20:03Yes, let him, let him pick it out. It's a personal
- 20:07decision. I don't want my wife buying picking my guns and tell you that
- 20:10I got you it is you're gonna get because then I'm gonna feel obligated to
- 20:11carry you. Right right, Holiday season is upon us, and many of
- 20:18you are gonna be shopping for firearms. The rules have changed, The laws
- 20:25have changed in Florida. If you are a Floridian listening to this program,
- 20:29if you're in another state, check with your state laws on stuff like that.
- 20:33But we're talking about the things you think about before buying somebody a gun.
- 20:37And the general rule of thumb is, unless you're buying a collector firearm
- 20:41that you know someone's looking for and they'll appreciate for their collection, get them
- 20:45a gift card, or say I'm gonna go with you pick out what we
- 20:48want. But still it goes back to shooting first and trying different firearms.
- 20:53Absolutely. I tell people all the time standing at the gun counter, you
- 20:59know, when they never like Look, I can show you everything there is
- 21:03that we have. I can explain the differences. I can tell you the
- 21:07pluses and the minuses, and the pros and the cons or whatever else.
- 21:10But you're not gonna know for sure until you put your hands on it,
- 21:15go pull the trigger on it at a target. You know. I can
- 21:18tell you what I think you might like. I can probably give you four
- 21:22or five that you probably will like. One of those four or five you
- 21:26may not, just so many time. I'm guessing at it now, all
- 21:29honesty. There's so many variables. Yeah, hand strength, hand size,
- 21:33what you want it for, right, Absolutely, And that's usually the first
- 21:36question. In somebody's I'm looking for a gun, Okay, for what purpose?
- 21:38We're shooting armadilla's in the yard, or we deer hunting, or we
- 21:44looking for something for self defense, right, you know, because they're very
- 21:47different things. Let's talk about kids, because there was a time, I
- 21:52mean, movies, classic iconic movies have been made about BB guns, all
- 21:56right. Is that the best place to start a young person with the old
- 22:03bbgun that you pick up at the big box store, as long as it's
- 22:07treated as a firearm. Understood, Yes, I'm fine with bbguns. I
- 22:11started my kids on I actually started my kids on twenty two rifles. But
- 22:15BB guns, Impella guns can still do real dad. Absolutely, that's what
- 22:18I'm saying. I mean, it's just, you know, they have to
- 22:22be treated not like a toy. That makes sense. Be beguns are not
- 22:26toys. They're not toys that you give to a seven year old unless that
- 22:32seven year old eight year old has a really strict set of rules and somebody's
- 22:34watching out the kitchen window while they're in the backyard shooting. Uh, every
- 22:38time they target, every time. It's got to be treated like a firearm
- 22:42that is capable of inflicting death or great bodily injury. Can you shoot a
- 22:48b begun inside your fence? I mean it can be done safely. Yes.
- 22:56They make bullet traps for them be beguns. Now, pellet rifles are
- 23:02a different story. I'm talking about a Daisy red rider. Yep. The
- 23:04big thing you have to worry about is you'll put your eye out, kid.
- 23:10They BB's are made out of steel, and if you shoot a hard
- 23:12target, it can or a piece of wood or a tire. I learned
- 23:18my lesson about that when I was a kid. I shot a tractor tire
- 23:21and it bounced back and hit me in the leg, and I was like,
- 23:25do that again. But it could have been my eye, and so
- 23:29the same rules apply as far as eye protection and so forth. Absolutely,
- 23:32you have to treat it like its a firearm. So I didn't start my
- 23:34kids on b beguns. I started my kids on real guns with the understanding
- 23:40that you know, it is treated treated with respect and it is not to
- 23:47be taken lightly. If someone makes that decision ideally A twenty two Yeah,
- 23:52absolutely they make there's several companies that make kid size, kid friendly side.
- 24:00They're really they're little rifles that are too small for you and I to shoot.
- 24:03For the best part, each one of my kids has one of those.
- 24:07We made a big deal about it, and we were very reverent with
- 24:11the introduction with it, you know, and they all learned to shoot that
