- 0:01Hey, welcome to the Integrate This EdTech podcast.
- 0:04I'm David Berner and I'm joined by Becky Keane,
- 0:08author of AI Optimism and CEO of Fidgetal Labs.
- 0:12I'm super excited to talk about Becky. We have
- 0:13a bit of a history because we've been at conferences
- 0:15together here and there. We've got photos. Yeah,
- 0:18you did our AI symposium, tons of stuff. So we've
- 0:21run into each other quite a bit. So I wanted
- 0:24to ask you right off the bat, what's great about
- 0:27being at this conference at ISTE? The vibe, the
- 0:32buzz, the energy is always really high. It's
- 0:36so big that you never run out of something to
- 0:40do. You could drop into anything at any time.
- 0:43There is literally always something going on.
- 0:45There's no downtime. Which is a good and a bad,
- 0:47depending on how you feel about that. Yeah, and
- 0:49we talked about that yesterday too. It's like
- 0:51there's a lot of stuff. You will not make it
- 0:53to everything. You should probably check if something's
- 0:55all the way across the conference center. Start
- 0:58walking early. Yeah, yeah. So, and you just had
- 1:01a session this morning. I did. I came straight
- 1:03here from that. Yeah, what was that on and how
- 1:07did it go? It was from shortcut to scaffold,
- 1:10how AI supports student thinking. Which is perfect
- 1:14because that's what everyone is talking about
- 1:16right now. It seems like is okay. We have this
- 1:18tool. It's been out in the wild for a few years
- 1:20But then what like people are so worried about
- 1:24it being a replacement You know students are
- 1:27outsourcing their thinking and the session was
- 1:28really about the free tools It was specifically
- 1:31sponsored by Microsoft education. So we're looking
- 1:34at study and learn study guide co -pilot notebooks
- 1:37Learning activities all the things that are free
- 1:40built -in accessible available that don't outsource
- 1:44student thinking. They're meant to build student
- 1:47comprehension and understanding and mastery.
- 1:50So yeah, that's what we're talking about. Yeah,
- 1:51and then you have some more sessions coming up
- 1:53over the next day here. And then you have some
- 1:57digital labs. I got some sessions, too, of other
- 2:00people leading those. So what does all Fidgetal
- 2:03Labs have going on at the conference? Oh, goodness.
- 2:05So I am so fortunate to have an amazing team
- 2:08of educators who have a wide range of capabilities.
- 2:12So of course, we're talking about AI, but we're
- 2:14also talking about critical thinking and student
- 2:16podcasts and game -based learning and infusing.
- 2:21edgy protocols, things like that. It's really
- 2:24a wide range of just great pedagogy with the
- 2:27ed tech tools that are available. Cool. And you
- 2:29mentioned the vibe here. Yeah. So connecting
- 2:32with people. Who are you looking forward to connecting
- 2:34with? And maybe even like someone you only have
- 2:36known online, but you're going to see them in
- 2:38first. Right. Okay. Well, check, check that box
- 2:41off this morning. I've already seen so many people.
- 2:45that that's the case. But honestly, this is my
- 2:47favorite place to meet new people. So I've been
- 2:51keeping an eye on LinkedIn and noticing people
- 2:55who are maybe a second level connection to me,
- 2:58right? I haven't interacted with them before.
- 3:00They're a new name, a new face to me. And I'm
- 3:02like, this person looks interesting. I want to
- 3:05check them out. I want to get to know them. I
- 3:06want to hear what they're all about because...
- 3:08I want to learn from new people. And I think
- 3:11that sometimes we tend to get a little echo chamber
- 3:13going on where we hear the same things over and
- 3:16over. And I am a person that highly values fresh
- 3:19perspective. So I'm someone that gets excited
- 3:22about meeting someone for the first time and
- 3:24then staying connected so I can learn from them.
- 3:26Yeah, absolutely. And there's no shortage of
- 3:30like opportunities where you can, like there's
- 3:32the people you meet, but then also like the things
- 3:34that you might experience. I know Jeremy and
- 3:37I have talked about like unexpected things that
- 3:38have happened, like even like meeting Manal Herrera
- 3:43and the sketching thing, talking about that.
- 3:46As far as the conference itself, how many have
- 3:51you been to so far? This is my 12th. Okay, so
- 3:54it's 12 years. Yeah, I haven't missed in 12 years.
- 3:57What do you wish somebody told you before like
- 4:00your first year? What do you wish you knew? So
- 4:02many things. So fortunately, I was not new to
- 4:05ed tech conferences. It was just my first ISTE,
- 4:09right, which is bigger, obviously. So I'm going
- 4:12to add to your question because I'm that kind
- 4:14of girl. I wish the first ed tech conference
- 4:18I ever went to Someone would have helped me explain
- 4:21or help me understand the format. I walked in
- 4:24I saw an expo hall and Honestly, no one had told
- 4:28me about the sessions and I know that sounds
- 4:30wild For those of us that have been dead tech
- 4:32conferences, but I was like so I wander around
- 4:35and get sold to like What are we doing here?
- 4:38I can't afford this stuff. I'm the first -year
- 4:39teacher. Like I was so confused. So I No one
- 4:44sat down with me inside like plan ahead, look
- 4:47for things that you want to go see, plan a schedule,
- 4:51like no one had given me any guidance. So before
- 4:54my first ISTE, I had that background coming in.
- 4:58But what I didn't know was the size of the Convention
- 5:02Center, and you already said it, to plan time
- 5:04to get from place to place. And now I'm so blessed
- 5:10and honored to have so many connections here
- 5:12that I have to add... lots of extra time for
- 5:15hallway hugs, which is like the best part. But
- 5:19it takes me like a solid half an hour to get
- 5:21from one place to another, because I'm doing
- 5:24lots of hallway reunions and that's awesome.
- 5:26But just planning time and not trying to pack
- 5:29it in back to back. The other tip, if you can
- 5:33swing it, I'm a big fan of breakfast, so I eat
- 5:36a big... Solid breakfast and then I bring like
- 5:39a bar and an apple to make it through the day
- 5:41because I don't have time To like me even go
- 5:43get a lunch. No one has time for that But I want
- 5:46to keep my energy up. So and then I I hit a good
- 5:49dinner at the end of the day Okay. Yeah, so no
- 5:51no back to back so much water, right? No back
- 5:54-to -back sessions for you unless they're in
- 5:56the same room like like I mean, you don't get
- 5:59a choice. Yeah, but I really try at one conference
- 6:03this year a collaboration I had really wanted
- 6:09me to be somewhere at a certain time. And it
- 6:11was really tight. And I asked them to send me
- 6:14an escort, which sounds like a total diva -moo.
- 6:18But I said, honestly, if you need me to make
- 6:20this happen in 10 minutes, like from my session
- 6:23to your booth, bring me an escort. And they're
- 6:26like, OK. So they stood at the door of my session.
- 6:29And they just very kindly said to everyone, follow
- 6:31us if you want to keep talking to her. And we
- 6:34brought everyone with us to the booth. That's
- 6:36not why they have a diva. I was like, I was like,
- 6:39so embarrassed. But I said, listen, I love to
- 6:44give hallway hugs. And so if you need me there,
- 6:46this is what's going to make it work. Yeah. And
- 6:48it did work. They did it twice for me. Nice.
- 6:50Yeah. So we want to ask you, we've been asking
- 6:53our guests, who are who someone or a few people
- 6:56that we should have on the podcast that we have
- 6:58not had on the podcast before they're doing great
- 6:59things, amazing things that you've seen. Steven
- 7:02Reed. from Endless Access. He's VP of Learning.
- 7:06They are doing the coolest stuff with community
- 7:11-based gaming. So it's where kids are joining
- 7:15a platform and they're building the game as a
- 7:18community. They're contributing actual content.
- 7:20And that's where we need to be going in education,
- 7:23not where kids are consuming content, right?
- 7:25That's where we get all this concern that they're
- 7:27outsourcing their cognition is because we're
- 7:29just giving them excuse me, but mind -numbing
- 7:33stuff, right? It's like, oh, memorize this list
- 7:35of events. No. They're doing things where kids
- 7:39are highly engaged and interacting, and they're
- 7:44building something together. And the game that
- 7:47they use is called Threadbear. It's completely
- 7:49developed by Endless Studios. It's award -winning
- 7:52from Games for Change and Game Development Council.
- 7:55It's really good stuff. He's here to see... And,
- 8:00you know, he's often at these types of events
- 8:02talking about what they're doing. And they really
- 8:05focus on bringing those experiences to kids in
- 8:09high -need demographics who wouldn't get access
- 8:11to great coding and game -based instruction otherwise.
- 8:15Awesome. Yeah. And that's a lot of areas that
- 8:17we serve too, rural areas and things like that.
- 8:20So awesome. So one last question for you. Where
- 8:23can people follow you for one, but then what
- 8:25does Vigital Labs have coming up and what do
- 8:27you have coming up? for projects, different things
- 8:29that people can expect. Okay. So you can find
- 8:33me, hopefully you drop this in a caption or something,
- 8:36but if you Google my name, it's me. I'm just
- 8:40super fortunate that way. So Becky Keene's, it's
- 8:43also beckykeene .com. That's easy. Fidgetal Labs
- 8:47is the intersection of physical and digital learning.
- 8:50So we are huge fans of... getting kids outside,
- 8:55building a structure, sketching by hand, right?
- 8:58Like all these interpersonal interactions that
- 9:02make learning happen, and then we complement
- 9:04that with digital resources and digital experiences.
- 9:08That's something I've believed in for a very
- 9:10long time, and that's kind of what we're about.
- 9:12We deliver a lot of professional learning for
- 9:15educators all over North America. More worldwide,
- 9:19but like primarily North America, right, is our
- 9:21audience. And we just announced, so you're the
- 9:26first time I've gotten to say this aloud. We
- 9:29just announced our new AI Playbook series. So
- 9:33that's launching in July next month. It's a six
- 9:37week, so like every other week series on using
- 9:42AI in your classroom, little teeny like bite
- 9:45sized immediately applicable ways. Teachers who
- 9:49sign up are gonna leave with like a playbook
- 9:52a PDF from every session of like what to go do
- 9:55right away And we're hoping that that can reach
- 9:58educators everywhere who don't get ISD PD experiences
- 10:03who don't you know who couldn't join your event
- 10:05who who aren't in these spaces and just are honestly
- 10:09at home, you know in in their own bubble, maybe
- 10:13they've got a team with them, but They're looking
- 10:16to grow in a way that hasn't been supported by
- 10:18going to a big event. And so we can come alongside
- 10:21that. And for just a very, very small fee, get
- 10:25them the PD that they need. Okay. And will that
- 10:27connect to the book in some way or? Okay. So
- 10:33I also have the book, right? AI Optimism. I like
- 10:37to think that everything we do connects to AI
- 10:40Optimism, right? To the framework. To bringing
- 10:44transformative practice to education. In fact,
- 10:47did you catch the ISTE announcement of the rename?
- 10:50Yes. Yes. Did you notice it's now transforming
- 10:53education? Yeah. So I'm thrilled with that because
- 10:56I'm like, oh, they listen. We've been talking
- 10:58about that for a while, right? So it's not explicitly
- 11:03aligned with the book because, you know, Fidgill
- 11:06Labs is more than just me, right? We've got a
- 11:08whole team of people who deliver amazing experiences,
- 11:11but everything we do has AI optimism in mind.
- 11:15And it also has immediately applicable, safe
- 11:19for education. You know, all of that is kind
- 11:22of our core belief. Okay. Anyway, so. Awesome.
- 11:25Well, yeah, we'll be sure to include everything
- 11:27in the show notes. So if you want to access Becky's
- 11:30website or the digital labs or any of the things
- 11:33that she has going on, you'll be able to do that
- 11:37via our show notes. Integrate this podcast, Apple,
- 11:41Spotify, YouTube. Check it out. And thanks, Becky.
- 11:45Yeah. Thanks for having me, David.
