- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Wednesday.
- 0:15It's the 5th of February. And would you know it, the first
- 0:19Wednesday in February every year is actually World Read Aloud
- 0:24Day. This is a day that was developed
- 0:2715 years ago that encourages all of us to read aloud because
- 0:32there is something glorious about not just literacy, but
- 0:35about reading things out aloud. And this is to help raise our
- 0:40awareness that there are many parts of the world where
- 0:42literacy is not something that is shared by everyone.
- 0:46Many parts of Africa, the female literacy rate particularly, it's
- 0:49still below 50%. And that's something that the
- 0:53world is working on to try and improve.
- 0:55And one small thing that we can do today is celebrate the gift
- 1:00that we have of being able to read.
- 1:01So grab a book, maybe grab a child, but not just any random
- 1:05child, one that you know, otherwise you'll get arrested.
- 1:08And then that one here and read a book.
- 1:11Read a book to them. Celebrate the joy of writing.
- 1:15Well, that's what we are going to do today.
- 1:17Friends. This is like low hanging fruit
- 1:19for me right now because I get to read aloud the next chapter
- 1:24of this book of second kings. Oh yes, And we return to the
- 1:29machinations of kings and their plotting and scheming and
- 1:34warring. So that is what we will read
- 1:37today. So join me as we hear the
- 1:41failure of human kings and the difference between them and our
- 1:46king that we have in Jesus as we read together Second Kings
- 1:50chapter 3. Ahab's son Joram began to rule
- 2:04over Israel in the 18th year of King Jehoshaphat's reign in
- 2:08Judah. He reigned in Samaria 12 years.
- 2:12He did what was evil in the Lord's sight, but not to the
- 2:15same extent as his father and mother.
- 2:17He at least tore down the sacred pillar to Bao that his father
- 2:21had set up. Nevertheless, he continued in
- 2:25the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had committed and LED the
- 2:29people of Israel to commit. King Mesha of Moab was a sheep
- 2:35breeder. He used to pay the king of
- 2:37Israel an annual tribute of 100,000 lambs and the wool of
- 2:42100,000 Rams. But after Ahab's death, the king
- 2:46of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
- 2:49So King Joram promptly mustered the army of Israel and marched
- 2:53from Samaria. On the way he sent this message
- 2:57to King Jehoshaphat of Judah. The king of Moab has rebelled
- 3:02against me. Will you join me in battle
- 3:05against him? And Jehoshaphat replied, Why, of
- 3:08course you and I are as one. My troops are your troops, and
- 3:13my horses are your horses. Then Jehoshaphat asked, What
- 3:18route will we take? We will attack from the
- 3:21wilderness of Edom. Joram replied.
- 3:25The king of Edom and his troops joined them, and all three
- 3:29armies travelled along a roundabout route through the
- 3:32wilderness for seven days, but there was no water for the men
- 3:35nor their animals. What should we do?
- 3:39The king of Israel cried out. The Lord has brought the three
- 3:42of us here to let the king of Moab defeat us.
- 3:46But King Jehoshaphat of Judah asked, Is there no prophet of
- 3:51the Lord with us? If there is, we can ask the Lord
- 3:55what to do through him. One of King Joram's officers
- 3:58replied. Elijah son of Shaphat is here.
- 4:02He used to be Elijah's personal assistant.
- 4:06Jehoshaphat said yes, the Lord speaks through him.
- 4:11So the king of Israel, King Jehoshaphat of Judah, and the
- 4:14king of Edom went to consult with Elisha.
- 4:18Why are you coming to me? Elisha asked.
- 4:21The king of Israel go to the Pagan prophets of your father
- 4:24and mother. But King Joram of Israel said
- 4:28no, for it is the Lord who called us 3 kings here, only to
- 4:32be defeated by the king of Moab. Elisha replied, As surely as the
- 4:38Lord Almighty lives whom I serve, I wouldn't even bother
- 4:43with you, except for my respect for King Jehoshaphat of Judah.
- 4:47Now bring me someone who can play the harp.
- 4:50While the harp was being played, the power of the Lord came upon
- 4:54Elisha, and he said, This is what the Lord says.
- 4:59This dry valley will be filled with pools of water.
- 5:03You will see neither wind nor rain, says the Lord, but this
- 5:08valley will be filled with water.
- 5:10You will have plenty for yourselves and your cattle and
- 5:13other animals. But this is only a simple thing
- 5:17for the Lord, for he will make you victorious over the army of
- 5:20Moab. You will conquer the best of
- 5:23their towns, even the fortified ones.
- 5:26You will cut down all their good trees, stop up all their
- 5:30springs, and ruin all their good land with stones.
- 5:35The next day, at about the time when the morning sacrifice was
- 5:38offered, water suddenly appeared.
- 5:42It was flowing from the direction of Edom, and soon
- 5:45there was water everywhere. Meanwhile, when the people of
- 5:49Moab heard about the three armies marching against them,
- 5:52they mobilised every man who was old enough to strap on a sword,
- 5:56and they stationed themselves along their border.
- 5:59But when they got up the next morning, the sun was shining
- 6:03across the water, making it appear red to the Moabites, like
- 6:07blood. It's blood, the Moabites
- 6:10exclaimed. The three armies must have
- 6:12attacked and killed each other. Let's go, men of Moab, and
- 6:16collect the plunder. But when the Moabites arrived at
- 6:20the Israelite camp, the army of Israel rushed out and attacked
- 6:24them until they turned and ran. The army of Israel chased them
- 6:29into the land of Moab, destroying everything as they
- 6:32went. They destroyed the towns,
- 6:34covered their good land with stones, stopped up all their
- 6:37springs and cut down all the good trees.
- 6:40Finally, only Kerr harasseth and it's stone walls were left, but
- 6:45men with slings surrounded and attacked it.
- 6:49When the king of Moab saw that he was losing the battle, he led
- 6:53700 of his swordsmen in a desperate attempt to
- 6:56breakthrough the enemy lines near the king of Edom, but they
- 7:00failed. Then the king of Moab took his
- 7:03oldest son, who would have been the next king, and sacrificed
- 7:07him as a burnt offering on the wall.
- 7:09So there was great anger against Israel, and the Israelites
- 7:14withdrew and returned to their own land.
- 7:27Oh Lord, there is much in this story that seems brutal to our
- 7:31modern ears. But Lord, as we hear this, we
- 7:35hear that you are a faithful God and that you are a creative God,
- 7:41and that when the Israelite and Edomite and Judean armies faced
- 7:46this incredible challenge of dryness, that you, in your
- 7:50creativity in a way that nobody could have imagined, solve this
- 7:54problem for them by having a river rush through that area,
- 7:59giving them the water that they needed.
- 8:02Our Lord, I wonder what parts of our lives we need a river of
- 8:06your presence to rush through, but we don't even know to ask
- 8:10for it. Lord, I just pray that in those
- 8:15dry parts of our lives where we are struggling and finding it
- 8:20hard, our Holy Spirit bring that life giving water of your
- 8:25presence and your provision into that dry place of need.
- 8:32You are a good, good God who loves us and provides for us.
- 8:38And we thank you for providing in ways that we don't even know
- 8:42how to ask for. We just rest in your kindness
- 8:48and your provision for us, our creative, providing, loving God.
- 8:54And we pray all of this in that loving name of Jesus, Amen.
