- 1:30Let's keep going through our Gospel of John journey.
- 1:33We have now flipped over to chapter 2.
- 1:36We finished chapter one last week and we are going to be be
- 1:39beginning in chapter 2 of John. Remember, 2 is the big number.
- 1:44And then the little verses. We're going to be in verses one
- 1:46through 12. We're going to be talking about
- 1:48the wedding at Cana today, Jesus's first miracle.
- 1:53And so if you want to follow along, I'm going to be reading
- 1:54through the NLT version and we're going to get straight to
- 1:58it. Let's stop messing around.
- 1:59I love you guys. I'm excited for this one.
- 2:01So John chapter 2 verses one through 12 reads like this.
- 2:06The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of
- 2:09Cana in Galilee. Jesus's mother was there and
- 2:13Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration.
- 2:17The wine supply ran out during the festivity, so Jesus's mother
- 2:21told them they have no more wine.
- 2:23Verse 4. Dear woman, that's not our
- 2:26problem, Jesus replied. My time has not yet come.
- 2:30Verse 5 But his mother told the servants, do whatever he tells
- 2:34you. Verse 6 Standing nearby were 6
- 2:37stone water jars used for Jewish ceremonial washing.
- 2:42Each could hold 20 to 30 gallons.
- 2:45Verse 7 Jesus told the servants, fill the jars with water.
- 2:48When the jars have been filled, he said, now dip some out and
- 2:52take it to the master of ceremonies.
- 2:54So the servants followed his instructions.
- 2:58When the master of ceremonies tasted the water, that was.
- 3:00Now wine not. Knowing where it had come from,
- 3:04though, of course the servants knew, he called the bridegroom
- 3:08over. A host always serves the best
- 3:11wine first, he said. Then when everyone has had a lot
- 3:14to drink, He brings out the less expensive wine.
- 3:18But you have kept the best until now.
- 3:21Verse 11 This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first
- 3:25time Jesus revealed His glory and His disciples believed in
- 3:30Him. Verse 12 After the wedding, he
- 3:32went to Capernaum for a few days with His mother, His brothers
- 3:36and His disciples. So we have the next day, which
- 3:40would have been the third day, 'cause remember how John had
- 3:42wrote in in chapter 1? We had the first day and then he
- 3:46said the next day, which the next day was Jesus calling
- 3:50Philip and then Nathaniel to follow him.
- 3:51So now Jesus has Peter and Andrew and Philip and Nathaniel
- 3:56being his first disciples following him.
- 3:58And then it says the next day, which would have been the third
- 4:01day, was a wedding celebration in the village of Canaan,
- 4:04Galilee. Jesus's mother was there that
- 4:06they throw that in there and Jesus and his disciples were
- 4:08also invited to the celebration. Now we follow up Jesus calling
- 4:13Nathaniel to follow him and his disciples now being invited to a
- 4:18wedding celebration. Now, wedding celebrations in
- 4:20Jewish culture was no small thing.
- 4:23This was a big deal. Jesus being invited to something
- 4:27that's important shows the importance of who Jesus is.
- 4:30And I love, as the theologian Charles Spurgeon once said, the
- 4:34invitation of Jesus to this wedding says something about the
- 4:37presence of Jesus at weddings. Jesus comes to a marriage and
- 4:42gives his blessing there that we may know that our family life is
- 4:47under his care. A wedding covenant between man
- 4:51and woman, a covenant created by God and blessed by him.
- 4:55A wedding is a significant moment that reflects A
- 4:58monumental truth from Scripture. As Paul says in Ephesians 525,
- 5:03for husbands, this means love your wives.
- 5:05Just as Christ loved the church, He gave up his life for her.
- 5:10This is why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined
- 5:13to his wife and the two are united into one.
- 5:16Jesus being invited to a wedding celebration is not a surprise
- 5:20because he should be invited to the thing that he created and
- 5:24represents. See, we are living in a time
- 5:27where we think we can define things how we want them to be
- 5:31and function, but we must remember we can't redefine
- 5:34something that we didn't create in the 1st place.
- 5:38God created marriage. God created the boundaries.
- 5:41God created the intent behind marriage.
- 5:44God is the one who defines marriage, not us.
- 5:47And we're living in a time where we think we can start redefine
- 5:50things that we don't have authority to redefine, that
- 5:53we're not the ones who created it in the first place.
- 5:56God created marriage between one man and one woman that unites
- 6:00them physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.
- 6:04A bond that is favored and blessed by God 'cause He's the
- 6:09one who created it. This is why I attending a
- 6:12wedding. I say this.
- 6:14This is why I attending a wedding.
- 6:15Showing up to a wedding, being a witness for this covenant is not
- 6:19one to take lightly. Even as one that's just
- 6:22attending, Even if you're just showing up for a wedding, even
- 6:25if you're just a guest at a wedding, this is something not
- 6:28to take lightly because you are attending and confirming you are
- 6:32celebrating and and wanting God's favor and blessing over
- 6:37this covenant, what he created. Just as Jesus accepted an
- 6:41invitation to a wedding, we need to invite Jesus into everything
- 6:46we do. Has Jesus been invited into all
- 6:50spaces and places in your life? Is Jesus showing up to not just
- 6:55the celebratory places, but even the places that are dark and
- 6:58gloomy, even into the highs, but even into the lows of your life?
- 7:02And to see Jesus be invited into this pivotal, important moment
- 7:08of this couple's lives is pretty incredible.
- 7:10And I think a reminder for us that we need to be inviting
- 7:13Jesus into the things that he has for us.
- 7:16Jesus created marriage. Jesus is the one who should be
- 7:19the center of our marriage. Jesus is the firm foundation
- 7:23that we build our marriage upon whatever it is.
- 7:26Maybe you're not married and you're listening to this.
- 7:28Whatever relationship you're in, whatever job you're working at,
- 7:30whatever you say, think, or do, Jesus should be invited into
- 7:36that. That Jesus should be the focus.
- 7:38That Jesus should always be the center of everything.
- 7:42I word it this way. Is Jesus centered around your
- 7:44life or is your life centered around Jesus?
- 7:47Jesus should be the focus for all of us.
- 7:50And so I love that it starts with Jesus and his disciples
- 7:53being invited to this wedding, that this was an important
- 7:57celebration, something that God created.
- 8:00And we need to always remember that we can't try to change or
- 8:03redefine something that God created and has purpose for.
- 8:07But then it goes on in John 1/3 through five, we go on to read
- 8:11in verse three that the wine runs out, that there's no more
- 8:15wine. And I know we may be reading
- 8:16that in our cultural context, but some of us may be just
- 8:20thinking like it is what it is, not that big of a deal.
- 8:23People should be grateful that they even got an enviro.
- 8:26They even got free food and drink in the 1st place that
- 8:29they're even in this celebration that we've allowed them to be
- 8:31here. I know we may have that thought
- 8:34maybe in our American Society, that man, I mean, we paid for
- 8:37what we could or even for my wedding, my wife and I, we had
- 8:40to pay for most of our weddings. So we probably would have that
- 8:42thought like we could only afford what we could afford.
- 8:45And so if something runs out, it runs out.
- 8:48But listen, in that culture, in that time period, running out of
- 8:52food and drink would be a huge social mistake and dishonorable
- 8:56thing to do. That would stick with that
- 8:59couple that would stick with those people.
- 9:01If their wedding was the wedding that food or drink ran out of,
- 9:05that would be the talk of the town that it would be something
- 9:07that would be dishonorable to the family.
- 9:10So then Mary goes to Jesus to let him know that the wine has
- 9:15ran out. And we don't know exactly why
- 9:17Mary does this, even though there are theories behind why
- 9:21was it that Mary knew the the wedding couple well?
- 9:25Does she know this family that was being married?
- 9:27Does she know them very well? Were they friends of hers?
- 9:30And she didn't want this to be a stain on their marriage or their
- 9:33family and lives and knew her son being who he was, could do
- 9:38the miraculous. Maybe, maybe it was that.
- 9:41We don't know exactly, but Jesus does respond in verse 4 in this
- 9:45way to her request. He says, dear woman, that's not
- 9:49our problem, Jesus replied. My time has not yet.
- 9:52Come now, when we read that in English, even when I was
- 9:56prepping for this podcast episode, I'm like, dear woman.
- 10:00I mean, I don't know if I'm speaking to my mom like that.
- 10:04I think if I said woman to my mom, I'd be real quick that's
- 10:08ready that there's a whooping coming right around the corner
- 10:10that my dad probably is stepping into the room if he heard me
- 10:13just say woman, Who you talking to that a woman whooping is is
- 10:18is right around the corner that there's a whooping on the way.
- 10:22But again, in the original language, it was not a
- 10:24disrespectful word as it seems in our language.
- 10:27Obviously this to call a your mother woman.
- 10:30That's that's disrespectful in our language, especially with
- 10:33that tone. But it more so the original
- 10:35language would translate better to lady.
- 10:38But even that probably in our English language wouldn't sound
- 10:42great If I looked at my mom was like, lady, who are you talking
- 10:45to? But either way, either way, what
- 10:49seemed to be happening is Jesus was establishing a new
- 10:52relationship between him and Mary that wasn't just simply a
- 10:56mother son relationship anymore. Jesus seemed to say to Mary, I
- 11:01won't do it. It's.
- 11:02Not time, but then. He went on to do it.
- 11:06What he really said to Mary was we now have a different
- 11:09relationship. Let me consult my heavenly
- 11:13Father. Jesus must have prayed and then
- 11:15known what to do, because He later said in this gospel in
- 11:19John 5:30, I can of myself do nothing.
- 11:23I do not seek my own will, but the will of the Father who sent
- 11:27me. Jesus was on mission, a mission
- 11:31from God, and this was a mission from His Father, God the Father,
- 11:36and He was following His will, not his own and definitely not
- 11:41His mother's will. And so when Jesus responds this
- 11:44way, he is establishing a new relationship with him and Mary
- 11:49that it's not just a mother son relationship anymore, that Jesus
- 11:53is the Christ, Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus is God, he is
- 11:58Emmanuel, God with us, He is God in flesh.
- 12:01And so when when Mary brings this to him and tells and asked
- 12:04him to provide more wine, she knows who he is.
- 12:07But Jesus is reminding her who he is as well, that she's asking
- 12:13him to do something. But this isn't something he can
- 12:15just decide on in a whim. That he has a mission from his
- 12:19Heavenly Father and he does not do his own will, but he does the
- 12:22Father's will. That there's purpose to his
- 12:25life, that he has a reason why he's here.
- 12:29And it might not be the time yet, even though Mary wants it
- 12:32to be. And again, we don't know exactly
- 12:34why Mary's asking this, but Mary coming to him knows that Jesus
- 12:39could do the miraculous, but Jesus needed to remind her of
- 12:43who he is and why he was where he was.
- 12:47But I do think something that stuck out to me when I was
- 12:50reading that, and I know some, some of my brothers in Christ
- 12:52won't like this, but this is something my father used to say,
- 12:56that even Mary needed to repent of her sin and put her faith in
- 13:01Jesus. Even though Jesus was her
- 13:03earthly son, from her womb He was the Son of God and that the
- 13:08only way to God the Father as we learn in John 14-6.
- 13:13That Jesus is the way, the truth and life.
- 13:15No one can come to the Father except through Him.
- 13:17That no one can receive eternal life.
- 13:19That everyone needs to submit to Jesus's lordship and put their
- 13:23faith in Him to be saved. That even Mary had to do that,
- 13:27that even Mary had to put her faith in Jesus, that this wasn't
- 13:30just a mother son relationship, but Jesus was God and flesh.
- 13:35Jesus was her savior as well. And so Mary approaching him in
- 13:39this way, Jesus was responding to her that this isn't my time
- 13:46yet. But even though Jesus clearly
- 13:48takes time and still decides to do what was asked of him, that
- 13:52was just a reminder of setting and reminding of Mary that this
- 13:56is not the same relationship that it once was.
- 14:00But it is powerful that Mary's few words she said were that do
- 14:04whatever he tells you. So even Mary, he says what he
- 14:07says. And Mary looks at the servants
- 14:08and says, do whatever he tells you.
- 14:11Let's listen to those wise words of Mary and obey Jesus and do
- 14:15whatever he tells us to do. Now when I was reading that,
- 14:18even preparing for this episode, when I read those words of Mary,
- 14:22do whatever he tells you, I'm praying internally that that's
- 14:26my heart posture towards Jesus that I do whatever he tells me
- 14:30that I that I follow and obey his teachings and commands in my
- 14:34life. So Jesus begins to perform his
- 14:38first miracle and he turns water into wine.
- 14:43What is really cool though, is he uses what is available to
- 14:46him. He could have produced wine in
- 14:49any way he wanted, but instead he uses what is at hand.
- 14:55And I just was sitting on that thought that Jesus, who is the
- 14:58Son of God who could just let wine come down from heaven,
- 15:02produce wine however he wants. He could do it with a snap of
- 15:04the finger, but he uses what is available to him and at hand
- 15:09what's around him. And I just was sitting on that.
- 15:13Even for us, let's be available and at hand for Jesus to use for
- 15:19his glory because he wants to. We just have to give him our
- 15:24yes, that we just say yes to Jesus and say Jesus, we are here
- 15:28for whatever you want to do. That we are going to follow you.
- 15:31We're going to trust in you that we are available and ready.
- 15:35That we are workers that are ready to work for your Kingdom,
- 15:40'cause as he says, the harvest is plentiful, but the workers
- 15:42are few. Let us be workers who are
- 15:45available and ready to be used by God.
- 15:48But he uses these ceremonial washing water jars as it said
- 15:52that would have been connected to the law, which is also pretty
- 15:56cool. Another representation that
- 15:58Jesus came to truly wash us clean by what's to come in his
- 16:03death and resurrection, fulfilling the law, that Jesus
- 16:07said, I didn't come to abolish the law, I came to fulfill the
- 16:11law. So even this intentionality of
- 16:13Jesus using these ceremonial washing water jars to represent
- 16:18how he is going to also wash us clean, that he is going to
- 16:22accomplish what the law and us never could, that he will be the
- 16:26perfect sacrifice. But notice Jesus works alongside
- 16:30the servants and has them join in in his miracle as well.
- 16:35I just love reading this 'cause you read through scripture and
- 16:37sometimes we can read through it quicker or the Holy Spirit can
- 16:40bring the light some different things.
- 16:41And even when I was reading that to notice how Jesus could have
- 16:45again, Jesus could have snapped the finger, whines there, but
- 16:47no, he uses what's available to him.
- 16:49Jesus could have also done it himself.
- 16:50He's Jesus. But he allows the servants to
- 16:54participate in his miracle, which is also so dope.
- 16:59God is such an awesome God, an intentional, loving Father, that
- 17:03He lets us partner with Him to do the impossible.
- 17:07And as Jesus will say later in this gospel, those who follow
- 17:11him and put their faith in Him will do even greater things.
- 17:16Let that truth marinate in your heart today that Jesus said,
- 17:21those who are to come, you and I, who put our faith in Jesus,
- 17:25his future followers would do even greater things than what he
- 17:29had done on this earth. That's pretty crazy.
- 17:34Let that marinate, be reminded that Jesus lives inside of you,
- 17:38that it's not you, but Jesus inside of you.
- 17:40The Holy Spirit, the power of God is going to do even greater
- 17:43things through you. But are we available?
- 17:47Are we saying, God, you have all of me some questions for you to
- 17:52sit on that I was sitting on as I was preparing this, but I love
- 17:56this quote from David Guzik concerning Jesus filling the
- 17:59jars and other translations. It says Jesus filled the jars to
- 18:03the brim that them boys were full, that there was no more
- 18:07space. The wine was full to the the
- 18:10jars of wine were full to the brim.
- 18:12And he wrote this, the water parts, water parts, the water
- 18:16pots were filled to the brim with no room to add anymore
- 18:21because Jesus wasn't going to add something to the water.
- 18:25He was going to transform it. I love that he, he filled it to
- 18:32the brim that he wasn't going to add something to the water.
- 18:35He was going to transform the whole thing, to transform all of
- 18:39it, to fill the whole jar with transformed water to wine.
- 18:45And I just wanted to remind you of this.
- 18:48Be filled to the brim with Jesus and let him transform you.
- 18:54Be filled with Christ. Let there be nothing that's of
- 18:58the old that don't try to pour new wine and old wineskins, but
- 19:03be filled with the new wine, the blood of Christ because of your
- 19:07faith in him. Be filled with Jesus.
- 19:09Don't leave any space for anything else, anything of the
- 19:14old you, anything that wants to take you from Christ.
- 19:17Be filled to the brim with Jesus and watch how He transforms you
- 19:23from the inside out. The servants though, obey Jesus
- 19:28and trust him that they can. Jesus now tells them to bring
- 19:32the wine to the master of ceremonies in the It's pretty
- 19:34cool that the servants respond with obedience and ain't no
- 19:37questioning. They trust Jesus, they bring
- 19:41this wine to the master of ceremonies and the wine that is
- 19:44there for them, this last wine that's coming out of Jesus trans
- 19:48just transformed from water to wine.
- 19:51And the master of ceremonies taste the wine.
- 19:53You know, he's tasting. What?
- 19:55Sorry, that's probably really nasty.
- 19:58Listen to that. If you're listening to us and
- 20:00not watching me, I'm acting as if I was drinking wine.
- 20:02So I apologize for my audio listeners.
- 20:04Now. The master of ceremonies tasted
- 20:05that wine, and he says a host always serves the best wine
- 20:09first. Then when everyone has had a lot
- 20:12to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine.
- 20:16But you have kept the best until now.
- 20:19Let's go. Jesus turns water into wine and
- 20:25reminds us believers the best is yet to come.
- 20:30We live in a world full of fiery darts that the enemy continues
- 20:34to fire our way to discourage us, to take us from Jesus.
- 20:38But we have Jesus, and that means we have hope and that he
- 20:42cares for us and takes care of us.
- 20:46That the host usually serves the best wine first, but as Jesus
- 20:52who flips the world upside down. That Jesus does things not the
- 20:56way we see it should be done. That we're reminded that we can
- 21:02have hope in him. That he takes care of us.
- 21:06That he provides for us. That he cares for us, That the
- 21:10best is yet to. Come, John then.
- 21:14Finishes the story with this This miraculous sign at Canaan.
- 21:18Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory and his
- 21:22disciples believed in him. After the wedding, he went to
- 21:25Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers and his
- 21:28disciples. I love this cause John described
- 21:32this as happening on the third day.
- 21:34As we discussed earlier, John described this day as the third
- 21:38day following the events in chapter 1, and he says Jesus
- 21:42revealed his glory in the disciples believed.
- 21:46This is a foreshadowing of Jesus three days later, raising from
- 21:51the grave after he has died on the cross for our sins.
- 21:54And now he raises from the grave, defeating sin and death
- 21:58and revealing his glory to the disciples and the disciples
- 22:02believing in him and even doubting Thomas as he touches
- 22:08the wounds of Jesus's resurrected body.
- 22:12This was just the beginning of Jesus's earthly ministry and
- 22:16many, many more true stories and miraculous ones to come.
- 22:22I just want to encourage and challenge, challenge US today.
- 22:26Don't ever let these become just another story.
- 22:30These are truths and historical truths and stories that we read
- 22:35in Scripture and help us. Let them help us know the God
- 22:40who created us, loves us, and has purpose for us.
- 22:43Jesus is alive and He lives inside those who have put their
- 22:47faith in Him and He wants to use your life for His glory.
- 22:51Let Him be what fills your life to the brim so you can be
- 22:56transformed more into His likeness and watch what He's
- 23:01about to do. I love you guys so much.
- 23:04Thank you for joining me. Let me pray so we can get up out
- 23:06of here. Lord Jesus, we love you.
- 23:11Lord Jesus, we thank you for who you are.
- 23:14It is so cool to read about you and the miraculous things you
- 23:18do. And God, you've worked a miracle
