- 0:22Speaker 1: Who's the second most famous person from UT Chattanooga?
- 0:27Speaker 2: A lot of people don't know this. Huh? Dominique's brother
- 0:29Speaker 2: went to UT Chattanooga.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Dominique Wilkins?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah, Dominique Wilkins' brother. Yep. He went to Chattanooga.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I didn't know that.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, see, fun fact.

- 0:57Speaker 1: He's the second best looking Bruin in UCLA history. It's me,
- 1:01Speaker 1: then him.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, Matt Barnes.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Appreciate it, fellas.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Man, man. Congratulations, man.
- 1:17Speaker 1: This is dope, man.
- 1:18Speaker 3: This is dope. I'm happy for both of y'all. Extremely talented.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I'm going to need to steal y'all for some other
- 1:22Speaker 3: show ideas I have, but congratulations on this, man.
- 1:25Speaker 2: You and I got something.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah, we cooking.
- 1:26Speaker 1: We cooking.
- 1:27Speaker 3: And I just hit T a couple weeks ago. We
- 1:29Speaker 3: about to have something cooking, too.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:30Speaker 2: This is dope, man.
- 1:31Speaker 3: When you guys told me you guys were doing something together,
- 1:32Speaker 3: I was like, that makes perfect sense.
- 1:33Speaker 2: So, congrats. I'm just waiting for it. Sorry about that.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I'm just waiting for it. it to come to fruition.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Because I had a couple other people that's doing some
- 1:41Speaker 2: stuff like, oh, I got something for you.
- 1:43Speaker 3: I really got something for you.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Let me just tell you something right now, Matt.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Please follow through because if you don't, he will not
- 1:52Speaker 1: talk to you for the rest of your life. I'm like, man,
- 1:55Speaker 1: why you don't talk to the dude? Man, we had
- 1:57Speaker 1: a meeting.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Bro.
- 1:58Speaker 1: 03, I ain't talked to him since because he didn't
- 2:00Speaker 1: show up.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Bro, I'm all about integrity, bro. No, I know. People's
- 2:05Speaker 2: word means a lot. And I think, honestly, I think
- 2:07Speaker 2: a lot of that has to do with how I
- 2:09Speaker 2: was raised and how I grew up and what I
- 2:11Speaker 2: didn't have. It was a lot of traumatic things that happened.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Being a child, like growing up with your grandmama, your mom,
- 2:19Speaker 2: you didn't have your dad there. And then you have
- 2:22Speaker 2: your dad, you know, say you're going to do things,
- 2:24Speaker 2: certain things, and then it just doesn't happen. Got you.
- 2:26Speaker 2: As a kid, very disappointing.
- 2:28Speaker 3: PTSD.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And for me as a dad, I always made sure,
- 2:33Speaker 2: especially with my kids, mom's like, yo, especially as it
- 2:36Speaker 2: relates to supporting my kids and being there for them. Like, yo,
- 2:40Speaker 2: if I say that I'm going to be there, let
- 2:43Speaker 2: me tell them. Don't you just casually, oh, your dad's
- 2:45Speaker 2: supposed to. And then if something comes up and I
- 2:48Speaker 2: don't show up, then that's a reflection on me. Their
- 2:50Speaker 2: kids are going to be like, they're going to be disappointed.
- 2:51Speaker 2: They ain't even caring about why it happened. They just
- 2:54Speaker 2: know I didn't show up. So I'm always just big
- 2:56Speaker 2: on people following through on their word. That's great. You
- 2:58Speaker 2: know what I mean? Yeah, that's important.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And that's what's great about him. We asked him to
- 3:01Speaker 1: do the show. He said yes before I think they
- 3:02Speaker 1: hung up.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:04Speaker 1: So thanks for being here, man.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. We've known each other for a long time. Yeah.
- 3:08Speaker 2: We both admire and you, I mean, you giving us kudos,
- 3:12Speaker 2: but what you guys are doing with all the smoke,
- 3:15Speaker 2: y'all bringing the smoke, you and your sidekick stack. I mean,
- 3:20Speaker 2: you guys are amazing. I mean, we're trying to get
- 3:22Speaker 2: on y'all level. I love it.
- 3:23Speaker 3: I love it.
- 3:24Speaker 1: How did that come to fruition?
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 3: To be honest with you, man, we were smoking one
- 3:29Speaker 3: day in my house in the Bay and I was
- 3:32Speaker 3: working ESPN, he was working Fox and, you know, those
- 3:35Speaker 3: are straight lines. entities you have to work for you
- 3:38Speaker 3: know what i mean and we've kind of been habitual
- 3:40Speaker 3: line steppers our entire life and particularly professional careers i'm
- 3:44Speaker 3: just like hey let's try a podcast although i really
- 3:46Speaker 3: didn't know what it was at the time i knew
- 3:47Speaker 3: it'd give us a little bit more freedom and flexibility
- 3:50Speaker 3: to be more of us um you know we're big
- 3:53Speaker 3: cannabis advocates and we wanted to kind of see if
- 3:56Speaker 3: we could be the first former athletes smoking on a
- 4:00Speaker 3: show and um that turned into We're about to launch
- 4:05Speaker 3: our eighth season next week.
- 4:06Speaker 2: We're big plant advocates, too. You ain't the only one.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Y'all didn't see T.O. was watering these plants before the
- 4:12Speaker 3: show started and getting their perfect angles, their camera angles.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We didn't just bring these on because you was here.
- 4:17Speaker 1: We've been at these plants.
- 4:18Speaker 3: That happened. Luckily, Showtime was doing a DeMarcus Cousins doc.
- 4:23Speaker 3: They asked me to speak on its behalf. One of
- 4:25Speaker 3: the producers after was like, hey, I heard you're starting
- 4:26Speaker 3: a podcast. How do you know that? They flew a
- 4:29Speaker 3: guy out from New York who ended up being Brian Daly,
- 4:32Speaker 3: who's now my COO of All The Smoke Productions. But
- 4:36Speaker 3: he was second in charge of Showtime Sports and kind of, hey,
- 4:38Speaker 3: we're starting a new digital platform for Showtime, basketball in particular.
- 4:43Speaker 3: What do you have? And I pitched the idea. And,
- 4:45Speaker 3: you know, eight years later, we're here.
- 4:47Speaker 1: You had the name?
- 4:48Speaker 3: No, my sister. The funny part about it is we
- 4:50Speaker 3: put it like we wanted to have the crowd involved
- 4:52Speaker 3: in it. So I put it out on social media,
- 4:54Speaker 3: you know, person to come up with the best name
- 4:56Speaker 3: we'll give him five thousand dollars and my sister came
- 4:58Speaker 3: up with the name but i give her so much
- 5:00Speaker 3: money that she didn't get coming up with the name
- 5:02Speaker 3: but yeah with my sister came up with the name
- 5:05Speaker 3: and uh man we're here we're here now.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah name one of your funnest guests oh funnest funnest
- 5:11Speaker 1: funnest i.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Know you had 44 on that yeah man we just
- 5:14Speaker 3: yeah we just had a brock not too long ago
- 5:15Speaker 3: that was amazing we had michelle last year that was
- 5:18Speaker 3: amazing um funniest guest man we just had danny devito
- 5:21Speaker 3: and and we just had will ferrell both them dudes
- 5:24Speaker 3: Oh man, from the time Dan, because he's so fucking little.
- 5:28Speaker 3: He's like this big. And from the time he walked in,
- 5:30Speaker 3: he was cracking jokes and talking shit about himself and
- 5:33Speaker 3: just kind of loosening the room up. So he was
- 5:36Speaker 3: really fun. Will Ferrell was just funny without even trying.
- 5:38Speaker 3: So those are two of the guys that just kind
- 5:39Speaker 3: of came to mind. Did y'all have to get like
- 5:41Speaker 3: a little chair for him?
- 5:42Speaker 2: A booster seat. How was the seat?
- 5:43Speaker 3: We had to set some pillows up in his chair
- 5:45Speaker 3: just to make sure he was comfortable and good.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Right, right, right.
- 5:48Speaker 1: What's the hardest part about doing the show?
- 5:50Speaker 3: I think everyone thinks it's easy. You know, I mean,
- 5:53Speaker 3: but I'm a kind of hands on everything type guy.
- 5:56Speaker 3: So just kind of hardest part is getting the guests.
- 5:59Speaker 3: You know, we paid talent. We're in year eight and
- 6:02Speaker 3: we were paying talent producers 10,000, 15,000 a month to
- 6:05Speaker 3: book people. And I ended up booking everybody. So I
- 6:07Speaker 3: just think booking people is the hardest thing. So now
- 6:10Speaker 3: I'm the talent booker for. Our show.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Pay yourself.
- 6:13Speaker 3: That's it. And I don't get no extra money, but
- 6:15Speaker 3: I just think it's easier for me to hit you
- 6:17Speaker 3: or hit you to come on the show than having
- 6:18Speaker 3: to go through. Everyone's got somebody now. Let me go
- 6:20Speaker 3: through their team.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And you get the no's and the yes's quicker.
- 6:23Speaker 2: That's it.
- 6:23Speaker 3: If you can't do it, you can't do it. We'll
- 6:25Speaker 3: find another time to circle back around, but I feel
- 6:27Speaker 3: like just going straight to the pipeline is much easier than,
- 6:29Speaker 3: or excuse me, it's straight to the source instead of
- 6:31Speaker 3: having to go through these pipelines is the easiest way
- 6:33Speaker 3: to do it.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Let me ask you something. Now, were you and Stack close?
- 6:36Speaker 1: Because I'm sure you have friends that you were closer
- 6:38Speaker 1: with that was like, Yeah, no.
- 6:40Speaker 3: So me and Stack really got close an interesting way.
- 6:43Speaker 3: So obviously he got traded to that We Believe team
- 6:47Speaker 3: in 2007, the Golden State team that we made a
- 6:50Speaker 3: little bit of history.
- 6:51Speaker 2: BD was on that.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Although the whole organization was great, Stack was the one daily,
- 7:04Speaker 3: you know, coming to smoke with me, bring me food,
- 7:07Speaker 3: sometimes sit in silence, come and watch movies, try to
- 7:10Speaker 3: make me smile. So I just think we went from
- 7:12Speaker 3: teammates and super tight to brothers at that point. And
- 7:15Speaker 3: our moms had bonded in our brief time playing together.
- 7:18Speaker 3: They were always in the little lounge at the old
- 7:21Speaker 3: arena drinking and ready to start the party right after
- 7:24Speaker 3: the game started.
- 7:24Speaker 2: So.
- 7:25Speaker 3: He and I bonded from that and just always had
- 7:28Speaker 3: that vibe. If we hadn't seen each other in months
- 7:30Speaker 3: or talked in a while, it was like we never
- 7:33Speaker 3: missed a beat. So, again, we were both doing our
- 7:37Speaker 3: Fox and ESPN gigs, and we had some chemistry and
- 7:40Speaker 3: some vibe doing that, and then that's how it came about.
- 7:44Speaker 2: So with both of you two, like I said, kind
- 7:46Speaker 2: of like a rebel in your sports. I was kind
- 7:48Speaker 2: of labeled the same.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Me too.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Was it? When you first started, were you uncomfortable? Did
- 7:57Speaker 2: you kind of almost kind of want to censor like,
- 7:59Speaker 2: you know, certain topics or what you had to say?
- 8:02Speaker 2: Because now everybody has podcasts. Everybody feels like they have
- 8:06Speaker 2: a voice now. What was it that really just put
- 8:10Speaker 2: you guys in a comfort zone or a safe space?
- 8:12Speaker 2: Not really safe space, but on a comfort zone to
- 8:14Speaker 2: be able to kind of speak freely without anything. dealing
- 8:17Speaker 2: with a lot of the backlash.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Well, I think that was the point of doing it
- 8:20Speaker 3: was because in our other jobs, we had to be
- 8:22Speaker 3: so reserved or PG or whatever you want to call it.
- 8:25Speaker 3: You know, working for Disney is different. You know, there
- 8:27Speaker 3: would be times where I'd slip cuss words in and
- 8:29Speaker 3: everyone would laugh, but after the show, like, Matt, can
- 8:31Speaker 3: you please not?
- 8:33Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 8:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:33Speaker 3: And it was just, and I, even when I'm a parent,
- 8:37Speaker 3: I'll cuss, get your ass downstairs. And when, you know,
- 8:39Speaker 3: being a stepdad now, my stepkid used to be like...
- 8:43Speaker 3: is he mad at me? Like, no, that just means
- 8:45Speaker 3: hurry up. Get your ass downstairs means hurry. You know
- 8:47Speaker 3: what I mean? So I just think stepping into this space,
- 8:50Speaker 3: I knew we didn't have to be as censored and
- 8:52Speaker 3: I knew we could be a little bit more or
- 8:54Speaker 3: a lot more ourselves. So we never really frayed away
- 8:57Speaker 3: or tiptoed around anything or kind of be like, we
- 9:01Speaker 3: can't say that. Obviously there are things that we've said
- 9:03Speaker 3: and done over the years that kind of be like, oh,
- 9:05Speaker 3: maybe we shouldn't have said that. But You know, we
- 9:08Speaker 3: kind of once we became our own bosses, we just
- 9:10Speaker 3: had to kind of really worry about, you know, the sponsors.
- 9:13Speaker 1: And I think they know what they get with us.
- 9:14Speaker 1: What are those things that you said that you're like?
- 9:18Speaker 3: I didn't say I haven't necessarily said anything like that,
- 9:20Speaker 3: but I know Jack got into some hot water a
- 9:22Speaker 3: little bit with I think it was. I don't want
- 9:25Speaker 3: to miss miss.
- 9:26Speaker 2: The sponsor or brand or something.
- 9:28Speaker 3: No, just it was. Was it Deshaun Jackson that said
- 9:33Speaker 3: that quoted something some years back?
- 9:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it was something.
- 9:37Speaker 3: He reposted something.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:39Speaker 3: And Jack reposted some political something. And Jack reposted, and
- 9:43Speaker 3: I think they both kind of got into a little
- 9:45Speaker 3: bit of hot water. And, you know, we had to
- 9:47Speaker 3: kind of do some mowing over. It was about the anti-Semitic.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Some anti-Semitic stuff a while back. You know what I mean?
- 9:55Speaker 3: And it kind of got us in a little bit
- 9:56Speaker 3: of hot water. And it just kind of said like
- 9:58Speaker 3: hey you know as free as we think we are
- 10:00Speaker 3: or we want to be there are some topics you
- 10:02Speaker 3: just have to be respectful around I think and I
- 10:04Speaker 3: just think it was a misunderstanding on both their parts
- 10:06Speaker 3: and luckily we were able to clear that up but
- 10:09Speaker 3: I just think again for the most part you know
- 10:11Speaker 3: it's in our title you know we're bringing we're coming
- 10:13Speaker 3: with all the smoke and so we're a little bit
- 10:14Speaker 3: different to T.O. 's point we've always kind of been
- 10:16Speaker 3: outside the lines and kind of wild cards in our
- 10:19Speaker 3: spaces and You know, luckily in this space, we didn't
- 10:22Speaker 3: really know what we were doing to begin with. But
- 10:24Speaker 3: what I love the most about, you know, launching season
- 10:26Speaker 3: eight soon is we inspired a lot of people, you know,
- 10:29Speaker 3: to me. And we've been on ESPN together. Like there's
- 10:31Speaker 3: always been a bunch of people. And not that they've
- 10:34Speaker 3: all done a bad job. There's always been a bunch
- 10:35Speaker 3: of people talking about us. We never got to really
- 10:37Speaker 3: kind of talk about ourselves, you know. So to create
- 10:40Speaker 3: a platform to be able to bring my brothers and
- 10:42Speaker 3: sisters in to tell their own stories and own narratives,
- 10:44Speaker 3: but also inspiring other people to do it. Because when
- 10:46Speaker 3: we jumped in this space, we were one of the
- 10:48Speaker 3: only few. You know what I mean? I think Knucklehead
- 10:50Speaker 3: started a few months before us, but after that it
- 10:52Speaker 3: was us. But I really feel like we kicked the
- 10:54Speaker 3: door in and inspired everyone to be like, hey, shit,
- 10:56Speaker 3: if they could do it, we could do it. And
- 10:58Speaker 3: now you look at the space and it's the new
- 11:01Speaker 3: form of news. That's how people consume their information is
- 11:03Speaker 3: this podcast now.
- 11:04Speaker 2: With that, should athletes speak on politics and culture?
- 11:09Speaker 3: If they're comfortable with it. I don't think it's a
- 11:11Speaker 3: have to or a must. You know, I think sometimes
- 11:13Speaker 3: we always put our biggest athletes up there like, hey,
- 11:15Speaker 3: you need to say this. You don't have to say
- 11:17Speaker 3: shit if you're not comfortable. And I think Especially, too, because,
- 11:20Speaker 3: you know, we're judged on everything that comes out of
- 11:22Speaker 3: our mouth. So if you're not educated, the worst thing
- 11:24Speaker 3: you could do is speak on something you don't know
- 11:26Speaker 3: just because people are saying you need to do it.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I always start talking.
- 11:29Speaker 1: About Stephen A. Smith like that.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 11:33Speaker 3: That's T.O.
- 11:33Speaker 2: 's guy.
- 11:34Speaker 3: T.O.
- 11:34Speaker 2: 's boy.
- 11:36Speaker 1: They're going to eat after this.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Man, that's your guy. I mean, remember, I went on
- 11:39Speaker 2: your show, and I was like, yo, I told you.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I told you way back when.
- 11:43Speaker 3: You know what's funny is every time, because obviously he's
- 11:45Speaker 3: had a shitstorm lately, and T.O., I told y'all.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I tried to tell him six years ago. Bro,
- 11:52Speaker 2: he ain't what everybody thinks he is. And then I
- 11:56Speaker 2: love when y'all talk and y'all have a guest on
- 11:58Speaker 2: and his name comes up. And it's always like, yeah,
- 12:02Speaker 2: our boy. He used to be our boy or something
- 12:04Speaker 2: like that. We're friends with him. It's always like, yeah.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I always try to give a disclaimer, a little disclaimer
- 12:10Speaker 3: before we kind of go in. But it's just it's
- 12:11Speaker 3: got to the point now where I can't even. I
- 12:14Speaker 3: can't even stand for you. I can't stand for you.
- 12:16Speaker 3: You've dug yourself in this hole. You got to get
- 12:18Speaker 3: yourself out.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And that's the thing. When I was on the show,
- 12:20Speaker 2: I was disputing. I was disputing everything that they mentioned
- 12:24Speaker 2: about it. And they were trying to show him love
- 12:26Speaker 2: and trying to lift him up at all costs. But
- 12:29Speaker 2: I kept on like, bro, look, this is how I feel.
- 12:31Speaker 2: That's y'all boy. But he ain't my boy.
- 12:34Speaker 3: But then Stack, he ain't my boy. Stack would say
- 12:36Speaker 3: that shit.
- 12:36Speaker 2: He ain't my boy.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Was that pre-Kellerman when you said he's blacker than you?
- 12:42Speaker 2: No, this was after that. This was after that. Yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 2: this was after that.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 2: But I already knew it then. But even when I
- 12:48Speaker 2: did that interview on ESPN, I said it tongue in cheek.
- 12:51Speaker 2: But like I said, I told him, even on that show,
- 12:53Speaker 2: I told him, dude, I'm in the streets. I'm hearing
- 12:56Speaker 2: what people are saying. I'm hearing what people are saying
- 12:59Speaker 2: about him. And then he gets on the show and
- 13:01Speaker 2: he spews all his vocabulary, his in-depth vocabulary, screaming to
- 13:07Speaker 2: the top of his lungs. His vernacular.
- 13:09Speaker 3: And I used to be in my group chats like, nah,
- 13:10Speaker 3: y'all don't know him.
- 13:12Speaker 2: In person, he's cool.
- 13:13Speaker 3: He did?
- 13:14Speaker 2: I did, I'm right. Yeah, he was with me. Nah, bro,
- 13:18Speaker 2: he's cool. I'm like, nah, I'm like, Matt, nah. He ain't.
- 13:22Speaker 1: The problem I have, and the way he's defending himself
- 13:27Speaker 1: is like, i don't think that's a good who's helping you.
- 13:32Speaker 3: But how do you how do you you're mad about
- 13:35Speaker 3: a black body giving you a thumbs down but then
- 13:38Speaker 3: you run to sean hannity who's an outward bigot on
- 13:40Speaker 3: fox who's known to spew nothing but race and racism
- 13:44Speaker 3: and bullshit and try to justify what you i think
- 13:47Speaker 3: his biggest issue is he just he stopped being able
- 13:49Speaker 3: to read the room and i think some people that's
- 13:52Speaker 3: a big issue with a lot of people is man
- 13:55Speaker 3: read the room right you know or self-awareness both those
- 13:58Speaker 3: two things self-awareness and read the room man he's.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Just not really just aware and not apologetic either like
- 14:05Speaker 2: no no accountability if he can have some accountability he'll
- 14:09Speaker 2: get at.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Least six black people back stupid it goes so far
- 14:13Speaker 3: especially today because we live in such a clickbait type
- 14:16Speaker 3: say wild shit with no repercussions I've said stuff I
- 14:19Speaker 3: was completely wrong about, and I'll be the first one
- 14:21Speaker 3: to tell you, like, man, I was wrong about this.
- 14:23Speaker 1: And we love that.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I've seen you make posts. We love posts. Yeah, he'll
- 14:27Speaker 2: make a post. I was wrong about X, Y, Z.
- 14:30Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Him, he doubles down.
- 14:33Speaker 3: I know.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Doubles down on it. And then, again, just the women
- 14:37Speaker 2: that he's degraded, like your Jasmine Crockett's, Michelle Obama. Like, bro,
- 14:42Speaker 2: these are esteemed, distinguished black women. Yes. And he still
- 14:48Speaker 2: doesn't get it. Does not get it. I don't understand, bro.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I'm at a loss.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You think there's a paycheck behind some of these guys?
- 14:54Speaker 3: Nothing. Here we go. 1,000%.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Because....
- 14:58Speaker 1: And I do not want to put him in this category, right? But, like,
- 15:02Speaker 1: the Officer Tatums of the world.
- 15:04Speaker 2: He's a bitch.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Excuse my language. I don't know for a lot of
- 15:06Speaker 3: cuts on this show.
- 15:07Speaker 1: You good.
- 15:07Speaker 2: You want all the smoke.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I don't fuck with him at all.
- 15:09Speaker 3: You want all the smoke. Yeah, I don't fuck with
- 15:10Speaker 3: him at all, but yeah.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:12Speaker 1: But are these people, like.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And him and DL are going at it right now.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Constantly. DL's so slick.
- 15:18Speaker 2: With the mouth.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Oh, he's so slick.
- 15:20Speaker 2: He's so slick, bro.
- 15:22Speaker 1: DL walk by you and go, you go, did he
- 15:24Speaker 1: cut me?
- 15:25Speaker 3: And all of a sudden, you're leaking like motherfucking DL.
- 15:28Speaker 1: And so this thing came up with wives because this,
- 15:34Speaker 1: talk bad about Michelle Obama. And then he ended up
- 15:37Speaker 1: showing a picture of his wife.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I was like, what?
- 15:39Speaker 3: And now he's mad, and his wife is mad that
- 15:41Speaker 3: people are talking about it.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Bro, you threw your wife in traffic.
- 15:44Speaker 1: But at least a picture with some makeup could have
- 15:46Speaker 1: helped you.
- 15:46Speaker 3: With gasoline drawers on. Oh, it was bad, because she's
- 15:49Speaker 3: not a looker, respectfully.
- 15:50Speaker 2: She's not a looker. Right. Beauty is obviously in the
- 15:53Speaker 2: eye of the beholder. Yeah, she's not like that. Right.
- 15:57Speaker 2: You know what I mean? And now already people are
- 15:58Speaker 2: going to come to her and say, T, you like
- 15:59Speaker 2: white girls anyway.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I know you probably do.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I know you like that white girl anyway. Stop it.
- 16:09Speaker 1: T's white girls are pretty.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Yeah, mine are cute, except for one of my baby mamas.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Oh, here you go.
- 16:14Speaker 2: It's all good, it's all good.
- 16:16Speaker 1: But yeah, so I always wonder when I see us
- 16:18Speaker 1: doing a disservice to our people, I wonder if A,
- 16:23Speaker 1: they're being threatened by the powers that be to go, listen,
- 16:26Speaker 1: you need to go do this. or we gonna do this,
- 16:28Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Like if you don't go
- 16:30Speaker 1: do this concert or if you don't go speak to
- 16:32Speaker 1: these people or if you don't talk bad about us,
- 16:34Speaker 1: we're gonna show everybody that little third strike. You know
- 16:36Speaker 1: what I mean?
- 16:37Speaker 2: So I'm wondering that.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Is it money or is it low self-esteem or insecurities
- 16:41Speaker 3: from the black people who are doing it that are
- 16:43Speaker 3: looking for acceptance or, oh, good job, you know, kind
- 16:47Speaker 3: of like that.
- 16:47Speaker 1: But acceptance from who?
- 16:48Speaker 3: White people.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Fuck. It's painful.
- 16:53Speaker 3: It's embarrassing.
- 16:54Speaker 2: It's embarrassing.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Really, it's like that. I get, like, even when it's
- 16:58Speaker 3: people I don't like or just, like, I get that, like,
- 17:00Speaker 3: that secondhand embarrassment. Like, bro, do you realize what you
- 17:02Speaker 3: just said or what you just did? Like, for what?
- 17:04Speaker 1: And it goes to that saying, all skinfolk ain't kinfolk.
- 17:08Speaker 3: But, I mean, it's just like, you know, and again,
- 17:10Speaker 3: I don't even like to dwell on Stephen A. because
- 17:13Speaker 3: I just don't, but.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I know, because it's always like, we don't want to
- 17:16Speaker 2: give the dude more ammunition or more platform than he
- 17:20Speaker 2: already had.
- 17:20Speaker 3: But it's like that, it's like that double-edged, like... you
- 17:24Speaker 3: make a ton of money now. And is all that
- 17:27Speaker 3: money worth your credibility in society or in public? You know, I'm,
- 17:30Speaker 3: I do this for the HBCUs and I'm, that means nothing.
- 17:33Speaker 3: You don't understand how people talk about you day to day.
- 17:36Speaker 3: And like I said, it used to like, T.L. just
- 17:38Speaker 3: told you, I used to be like, nah, y'all know, bro.
- 17:40Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 17:41Speaker 3: Cause he definitely looked out for me when I was
- 17:43Speaker 3: at ESPN and enrolled the red carpet out to help
- 17:45Speaker 3: me with shit. But it was just like, it became
- 17:47Speaker 3: harder and harder to be like, damn bro. Like I'm
- 17:51Speaker 3: looking like an asshole now defending you. So.
- 17:53Speaker 2: And like, yeah, I mean, when I was on the show, like,
- 17:56Speaker 2: that's literally how it was. They were defending me. They
- 17:59Speaker 2: didn't change my stance whatsoever. I'm like, I get it.
- 18:03Speaker 2: They had a relationship with him. They worked together, this
- 18:06Speaker 2: and that and the other. And again, like I said,
- 18:07Speaker 2: it's different. When you have a different encounter with somebody,
- 18:10Speaker 2: your feelings aren't my feelings.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:12Speaker 2: You know what I mean? But then at some point.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Your true colors are going to start the show. Like
- 18:16Speaker 2: I said, I didn't say anything.
- 18:18Speaker 3: My favorite shit that you see T.O. under all this
- 18:20Speaker 3: shit was, I told y'all. That's all I told y'all.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Exactly. I told you so. You know what I mean?
- 18:27Speaker 2: But I saw it early on. Even like I said,
- 18:29Speaker 2: that clip that keeps going viral when I'm like, yo,
- 18:31Speaker 2: because I'm listening. I'm on the show. We're talking about
- 18:33Speaker 2: Colin Kaepernick. I'm listening at his commentary. I'm listening at
- 18:37Speaker 2: Max's commentary. I was almost, I couldn't get all my
- 18:41Speaker 2: words out because I saw it. And I'm like, bro,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I'm like, Max almost seems a little bit more educated
- 18:46Speaker 2: and in the know about what's going on than you.
- 18:49Speaker 2: And I'm like, yo, Max almost seems blacker than you.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Max loved that shit too.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yo, if you see Steven's face, now hold on.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Right. I'm going to check you right there. Yeah, I'm
- 18:58Speaker 2: going to check you right there. I'm like, bro. I'm like,
- 19:00Speaker 2: I said it tongue in cheek, but literally that's what
- 19:03Speaker 2: it was. I called it what it was.
- 19:04Speaker 1: So you're probably one of the biggest podcasters in the
- 19:06Speaker 1: world right now.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:07Speaker 1: You have the number one podcast, number two.
- 19:10Speaker 3: At least, definitely. We do well.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yeah, you do well.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I mean, bro, we're going to give you your flowers, bro,
- 19:14Speaker 2: if you want. Thank you. Absolutely.
- 19:15Speaker 1: All of these plants.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Exactly, bro.
- 19:17Speaker 3: I appreciate it.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Exactly what you want. You want these flowers or these plants?
- 19:20Speaker 2: You know what I mean? We got the greenery so
- 19:22Speaker 2: you can feel comfortable. There you go. Because we ain't
- 19:23Speaker 2: smoking up in here. Right, right. But it's about to
- 19:25Speaker 2: be some smoke. Yeah. But, man, we want to give
- 19:27Speaker 2: you guys your flowers.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Did you know this is what you wanted after retirement?
- 19:31Speaker 3: You know, we came and TU was in the same
- 19:33Speaker 3: era where social media didn't really hit until the end
- 19:35Speaker 3: of our careers. You know what I mean? So we
- 19:38Speaker 3: looked at media a lot different, especially you went through
- 19:40Speaker 3: a lot of shit where you would say stuff and
- 19:41Speaker 3: they would twist it. So as athletes, we kind of
- 19:43Speaker 3: looked at media like the cops. You know what I mean?
- 19:46Speaker 3: Like we were cops you know i mean so when
- 19:48Speaker 3: i got out i'm like oh you should you're well
- 19:49Speaker 3: spoken i'm like oh fuck with them you know i'm
- 19:51Speaker 3: not saying and i'm not throwing a blanket on everyone
- 19:53Speaker 3: because there was always those people who were really good
- 19:55Speaker 3: and really worked at their job and really represented our
- 19:57Speaker 3: voice the best way because it used to be whatever
- 20:00Speaker 3: was on espn or fox and whatever was in the
- 20:02Speaker 3: newspaper was the gospel and we never had a voice
- 20:04Speaker 3: to speak our opinion you know what i mean so
- 20:07Speaker 3: when i got out i'm like nah i'm cool And
- 20:09Speaker 3: they're like, just give it a try. And then I
- 20:10Speaker 3: gave it a try and I liked it. So, you know,
- 20:12Speaker 3: I went the corporate route and learned and saw the
- 20:14Speaker 3: behind the scenes. But when we broke free and kind
- 20:16Speaker 3: of jumped in our own lane, it was like, let's
- 20:19Speaker 3: be a small part of changing. And no, he said this,
- 20:22Speaker 3: but that's not true. This is what really happened, you know,
- 20:24Speaker 3: to really get the real side of the story. Because
- 20:26Speaker 3: for so many years, I'm finding so much success in
- 20:29Speaker 3: this baseball space because I'm talking to guys that came
- 20:31Speaker 3: up in the 80s and 90s that never had a
- 20:33Speaker 3: chance to, we just had Kevin Mitchell, never had a
- 20:36Speaker 3: chance to dispel, you know, he was, He was the
- 20:39Speaker 3: scapegoat for Doc and Daryl's issues. They traded him because,
- 20:42Speaker 3: you know what I mean? And he's just, and I
- 20:44Speaker 3: asked him, I was like, was it hard having to
- 20:46Speaker 3: just live with the BS that wasn't really you? He
- 20:48Speaker 3: was like, man, it was, you know what I mean?
- 20:50Speaker 3: And then people would meet me in person. Like, man,
- 20:51Speaker 3: you're not like that.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Similar to y'all similar to me same thing you know
- 20:55Speaker 3: people saw me cuss a ref out or do some
- 20:57Speaker 3: shit and they're like oh he's a thug he's this
- 20:59Speaker 3: and then they hear me talk like oh you're not
- 21:00Speaker 3: who we thought you were.
- 21:02Speaker 2: 15 20 minutes with you you know being at certain
- 21:05Speaker 2: events or what have you they see how personable we
- 21:08Speaker 2: are like we still gonna be who we are we
- 21:10Speaker 2: get in that competitive space or whatever we're competitors right
- 21:13Speaker 2: but to his point like bro i get it all
- 21:16Speaker 2: the time i'm When you're on the court, on the field,
- 21:20Speaker 2: we're two different animals.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Competitors, yeah. You got to be.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Got to be a dog.
- 21:24Speaker 2: We're not living with that aggression as soon as we
- 21:28Speaker 2: go home to our families and our parents and around
- 21:30Speaker 2: our friends.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I'm high most of the time anyway, so I'm cool.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I wasn't high. I probably should have started smoking, bro.
- 21:36Speaker 1: But you don't smoke much on the air anymore.
- 21:38Speaker 3: With certain guests.
- 21:39Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 21:40Speaker 3: Because we just have to realize what current athletes, we
- 21:44Speaker 3: would look dumb and put them in a bad spot.
- 21:46Speaker 3: So when we have Snoop, when we have Wiz, when
- 21:48Speaker 3: there's guys that come in. We actually asked him. But yeah,
- 21:55Speaker 3: we kind of pick and choose now.
- 21:56Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 21:56Speaker 2: How about an edible?
- 21:58Speaker 3: Those are always flowing.
- 21:59Speaker 1: No, I'm saying that's what he said to you guys.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I don't smoke.
- 22:01Speaker 2: How about an edible? How about an edible? Yes. I
- 22:05Speaker 2: didn't know you were just kind of like just right
- 22:06Speaker 2: over with Sacramento. Like, Played in San Francisco. I used
- 22:10Speaker 2: to go up there and watch the Sacramento Kings play
- 22:13Speaker 2: all the time when the Maloofs owned it. Yeah.
- 22:15Speaker 3: That was a fun time, man. The Maloofs were dope.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Man, what?
- 22:17Speaker 3: And then their hotels, they kicked ass. That was a
- 22:20Speaker 3: dope time, bro.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Oh, man. Bro, they showed me so much love. Even
- 22:25Speaker 2: my son, they welcomed me because I would drive like.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Hour and a half, two hours, yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Just to go to the Kings games.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Yeah That's back when they were good I see Webb
- 22:35Speaker 3: And Mike Bibby And all that Sacramento was jumping At
- 22:38Speaker 3: that time All of.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Them Doug Christie Bobby Jackson Bobby Jackson Yeah All of
- 22:44Speaker 2: them Bro I used to They used to have me
- 22:46Speaker 2: Courtside Courtside Yeah Courtside Yeah Bro I used to be
- 22:50Speaker 2: Pushing my little Yukon Denali in that traffic, bro. Pushing it,
- 22:54Speaker 2: trying to make sure I got there on time.
- 22:56Speaker 1: It was about an hour away?
- 22:57Speaker 2: Hour and a half. Yeah, bro. Man, I had so
- 23:00Speaker 2: much fun. What was it like growing up out there? Yeah,
- 23:02Speaker 2: that's what I was.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Going to do. So I was born in San Jose,
- 23:05Speaker 3: so right outside the Bay Area.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Say that again, because San Jose people think they from
- 23:09Speaker 1: the Bay.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I mean, it's funny.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Some people from the Bay give it Bay love. I
- 23:16Speaker 3: know it's San Jose. It's its own little thing. So
- 23:18Speaker 3: I was born and lived there pops in the streets
- 23:21Speaker 3: at about at like 89 we had to bust a
- 23:23Speaker 3: move to sack to kind of get out of some
- 23:25Speaker 3: shit so i went from like diversified asian filipino black
- 23:30Speaker 3: mexican majority that was the majority to moved into a
- 23:34Speaker 3: similar neighborhood but my parents always like starting third grade
- 23:37Speaker 3: they put me in white schools consistently put me in
- 23:39Speaker 3: white schools and i never understood why like why am
- 23:41Speaker 3: i always in these schools i can't go to school
- 23:42Speaker 3: with my friends but then once i started doing the
- 23:45Speaker 3: school work i realized how far behind the educational system
- 23:47Speaker 3: was where i came from so i'm a big old
- 23:50Speaker 3: third grader. And when my kid, my, my, my classmates
- 23:52Speaker 3: get to go out to recess, I got to go
- 23:53Speaker 3: back to the first grade pod. I'm in there like
- 23:55Speaker 3: Billy Madison with little kids trying to write my letters
- 23:58Speaker 3: and shit. I'm like, what is going on here? You
- 23:59Speaker 3: know what I mean? So it's just like, that was
- 24:02Speaker 3: a culture shock to me. You know, even though I'm biracial,
- 24:05Speaker 3: I was just never really around a ton of white
- 24:08Speaker 3: kids when I first grew up. So then, you know,
- 24:09Speaker 3: being thrown in that kind of thing. And then from there,
- 24:12Speaker 3: I faced a lot of racism, a ton of racism.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Cause I'd never really knew, you know what I mean?
- 24:17Speaker 3: So my mom's Italian, my dad's black. So I, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 3: I would be sad. I'm nine years old. I don't
- 24:20Speaker 3: know why these kids won't play me just cause I'm darker.
- 24:23Speaker 3: And I, you know, cry and she would console me.
- 24:25Speaker 3: And my dad was like, nah, F that. If they
- 24:26Speaker 3: call you a nigga, you have my permission to fight them.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I'm like, what? So I got the green light in
- 24:30Speaker 3: third grade. Like, if they call you that.
- 24:32Speaker 1: So I started.
- 24:32Speaker 2: That's where it started.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Literally, that's where it started. Like, people don't understand. Like,
- 24:36Speaker 3: I've always kind of been stereotyped. And it started with
- 24:39Speaker 3: racism in, like, third grade. So I started fighting so much, man,
- 24:42Speaker 3: that my mom was a stay-at-home mom, that she had
- 24:44Speaker 3: to kind of start coming to me in the yard
- 24:45Speaker 3: duty at break. So our little small recesses, lunchtime, and
- 24:49Speaker 3: then the, after lunch break, like my mom was there
- 24:51Speaker 3: so much that she, she became a teacher, but it
- 24:54Speaker 3: was because my dad said, you know, so I had
- 24:56Speaker 3: to fight to respect, you know, I had to fight
- 24:59Speaker 3: my way to respect as a child in elementary school.
- 25:02Speaker 3: And then once they accepted me, I was, you know,
- 25:03Speaker 3: I played every athlete, you know, I've lettered in four sports,
- 25:06Speaker 3: all American in two sports. Like it was kind of
- 25:08Speaker 3: a smooth sailing after that, but faced a lot of
- 25:12Speaker 3: racism growing up and it kind of hardened me and
- 25:16Speaker 3: shaped me to be kind of just more outspoken and
- 25:19Speaker 3: speaking for those that don't have a voice or a
- 25:21Speaker 3: platform to speak, you know, whether it be racism, whether
- 25:25Speaker 3: it just be right and wrong. You know what I mean?
- 25:26Speaker 3: I feel like there's so many people that just do
- 25:28Speaker 3: nasty shit to people that don't have a means to
- 25:31Speaker 3: express their selves. So I've always been someone that kind
- 25:33Speaker 3: of took that upon myself to not be afraid to
- 25:36Speaker 3: speak out against the bullshit.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Were you one to bomb on somebody? Like, would you
- 25:40Speaker 1: take the first hit?
- 25:42Speaker 3: It just depends on what happened. right like there was
- 25:44Speaker 3: yeah there was a kid that so the the culmination
- 25:47Speaker 3: of my racism i don't even remember his name to
- 25:49Speaker 3: be honest with you but it was my senior year
- 25:50Speaker 3: so i'm about two months from going to ucla and
- 25:52Speaker 3: my sister i'm a senior my sister's a sophomore and
- 25:55Speaker 3: this kid kept messing with her and i didn't really
- 25:58Speaker 3: know what he was doing but he was kept messing
- 26:00Speaker 3: with her and then she finally told me like he's
- 26:01Speaker 3: been calling me a nigger and today he's spitting my
- 26:03Speaker 3: hair and i had open fourth because i was a
- 26:05Speaker 3: senior so i was gonna go home i was actually
- 26:07Speaker 3: gonna go smoke before basketball practice but i was gonna
- 26:09Speaker 3: go chill before basketball practice and this kid happened to
- 26:11Speaker 3: um for his uh unfortunately for him he walked it's
- 26:14Speaker 3: like there he is or his homegirl said there he
- 26:16Speaker 3: is so i just went and did what any brother
- 26:19Speaker 3: would do you know i had to put paws on
- 26:20Speaker 3: him and and whooped him and then we got taken
- 26:23Speaker 3: to the principal's office and our parents got called in
- 26:26Speaker 3: and the school didn't believe me like again i brought
- 26:29Speaker 3: so many accolades dusty baker went to our school i
- 26:31Speaker 3: broke like all dusty baker's records and and every sport
- 26:34Speaker 3: but baseball that was that was his i wouldn't mind
- 26:37Speaker 3: um But they just, you know, his dad's a prominent
- 26:39Speaker 3: lawyer in this town. He wasn't raised that way. So
- 26:41Speaker 3: they basically called me a liar. Although there's spit in
- 26:44Speaker 3: my sister's hair. Oh, you know, he didn't say that.
- 26:46Speaker 3: He might have spit on her. But long story short,
- 26:49Speaker 3: I get suspended for like a week. While I'm suspended,
- 26:51Speaker 3: the KKK comes to my high school and burns down
- 26:54Speaker 3: a bathroom, hangs a mannequin with my football jersey on
- 26:57Speaker 3: it with a noose around the mannequin's neck. Die, niggers.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Swastikas everywhere. It made like national news. The NAACP came
- 27:04Speaker 3: up there. What?
- 27:05Speaker 1: In Sacramento?
- 27:06Speaker 3: And I actually found out they tried to put a
- 27:08Speaker 3: hit on me. So we had to move. We moved
- 27:10Speaker 3: my senior year to just a neighboring city to kind
- 27:12Speaker 3: of get out the heat. We had people watching our
- 27:14Speaker 3: house for like the first month and a half after
- 27:16Speaker 3: it happened. Like, it got hot. You know what I mean?
- 27:18Speaker 3: So it was kind of like, unfortunately, I had racism
- 27:21Speaker 3: in third grade. And then it was third and fourth.
- 27:23Speaker 3: And it was smooth sailing. And what year was this?
- 27:25Speaker 2: 98.
- 27:25Speaker 3: It was my senior year of high school.
- 27:26Speaker 2: That's crazy, bro. Yeah.
- 27:29Speaker 1: California. People don't think we got it out here.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Well, I mean, Sacramento is kind of like known as...
- 27:33Speaker 3: i'm you know cow town you know i mean now
- 27:35Speaker 3: they used to have the cowbells at the king's game
- 27:37Speaker 3: like it's it's a lot of just rural land out
- 27:39Speaker 3: there you know what i mean and there are some
- 27:41Speaker 3: ghettos and some hoods out there but you know there's
- 27:44Speaker 3: definitely a lot of people that at the time i
- 27:47Speaker 3: don't know about now because i haven't lived there in
- 27:48Speaker 3: such a long time that just wasn't fucking with black
- 27:50Speaker 3: people so and you know what's crazy was i came
- 27:53Speaker 3: to la after that and really kind of started to
- 27:56Speaker 3: be able to spread my wings. And I was always
- 27:57Speaker 3: very proud of my heritage. You know, my mom being Italian,
- 28:00Speaker 3: my dad being black, you know, I've always been proud
- 28:02Speaker 3: of that. But I realized that, you know, 17, just
- 28:04Speaker 3: turning 18, that like, I'm looked at as a black man.
- 28:07Speaker 1: All day. Yeah. The clan ain't gonna be like, get him,
- 28:10Speaker 1: get him.
- 28:11Speaker 3: No, he's half Italian. No, leave him alone. Have him cook. No,
- 28:15Speaker 3: they were, yeah, I'd be in the house, but.
- 28:20Speaker 3: But, no, that's how they kind of looked at me,
- 28:23Speaker 3: and that's what I kind of realized at that point. Like,
- 28:25Speaker 3: I'm still very, to this day, I'm 46. I'm very
- 28:27Speaker 3: proud of who I am and what I am. But
- 28:30Speaker 3: I realized at 17 years old, like, no, you're a nigger.
- 28:33Speaker 3: People look at you as a black man.
- 28:34Speaker 2: So, yeah, and that brings me to my point. Like,
- 28:37Speaker 2: I've been around your two boys, Carter and Isaiah. Like,
- 28:40Speaker 2: how is those moments? Like, honestly, bro, that's crazy. I'm
- 28:46Speaker 2: shocked to hear that story. Mm-hmm. I'm sure they know.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Have you told them that story?
- 28:52Speaker 3: I actually sat all of our kids down. It was
- 28:54Speaker 3: interesting because I did a little documentary on it that
- 28:56Speaker 3: we never ended up releasing that I probably should release
- 28:58Speaker 3: now that I have my own company. You just reminded
- 29:00Speaker 3: me of it, but I kind of just broke down
- 29:02Speaker 3: what happened. There you go. But, you know, thankfully, you know,
- 29:07Speaker 3: The twins are Italian, black and Mexican. Their mom's black
- 29:10Speaker 3: and Mexican. So you can't really tell what the twins
- 29:12Speaker 3: are because they're light skinned, too. And then obviously I
- 29:15Speaker 3: have three stepkids that are full black. And then, you know,
- 29:17Speaker 3: I have my two youngest with my wife now that are,
- 29:20Speaker 3: you know, they're just a quarter Italian. The rest are black.
- 29:22Speaker 3: You know, the rest of them is black. So they're
- 29:24Speaker 3: just different. But thankfully, you know, we've come a long way.
- 29:28Speaker 3: And again, this is 80s, early 90s. Like biracial kids
- 29:32Speaker 3: are more the norm now.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Sure.
- 29:34Speaker 3: You know what I mean? So it's just like it's
- 29:35Speaker 3: not as hard. But it used to be. I was
- 29:38Speaker 3: never white enough and I was never black enough. You
- 29:39Speaker 3: know what I mean? So when I ran into some shit,
- 29:41Speaker 3: who do I run to? You know what I mean?
- 29:43Speaker 3: And I ran to my, my parents and my mom
- 29:44Speaker 3: would console me. My dad was like, no, fuck that.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Stand on them, you know, stand on your 10 toes
- 29:48Speaker 3: and do what you got to do. So that was
- 29:49Speaker 3: just like, in that time, I really didn't have a
- 29:52Speaker 3: side to run to, but thankfully I'm so thankful now
- 29:54Speaker 3: that You know, it's just more the norm. And my
- 29:57Speaker 3: kids haven't ran into too much.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Right. How do you manage or, you know, what is
- 30:03Speaker 2: your fatherly advice for if they encounter?
- 30:06Speaker 3: We've had the conversations, you know, obviously, you know, when
- 30:09Speaker 3: Stephon Clark, rest in peace, in Sacramento died, I think
- 30:11Speaker 3: the twins were like seven years old. And then they
- 30:16Speaker 3: saw the George Floyd stuff. So we've had conversations around
- 30:20Speaker 3: police brutality and how, especially now they're 17, like You
- 30:23Speaker 3: get pulled over, hands on the wheel, turn the music down,
- 30:25Speaker 3: roll your windows down. No bullshit. No, my dad is
- 30:27Speaker 3: this or none of that flies. Just listen to what
- 30:29Speaker 3: they have going on. If they give you a ticket,
- 30:31Speaker 3: pay for it.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Your goal is to get home.
- 30:33Speaker 3: You know what I mean? So it's just like we've
- 30:34Speaker 3: had those type of conversations. And then also conversations like, listen,
- 30:38Speaker 3: all your friends aren't going to where you're trying to
- 30:39Speaker 3: get to. So you can't be doing some of the
- 30:41Speaker 3: same stuff. So I've had normal fatherly conversations that have evolved,
- 30:46Speaker 3: you know, that have a little bit of you're African-American,
- 30:50Speaker 3: but again– Not thankfully, but just luckily you just can't
- 30:53Speaker 3: really tell what the twins are and their light, fair skin,
- 30:57Speaker 3: so they don't really get too much.
- 30:59Speaker 2: This football season is heating up, and every week feels
- 31:02Speaker 2: bigger with DraftKings. The DraftKings Sports app is now live
- 31:05Speaker 2: in all 50 states. One app, all through football nationwide.
- 31:09Speaker 2: New DraftKings customers? Sign up with code TO81, spend just $ 5,
- 31:12Speaker 2: and get $ 150 in rewards within 14 days. includes all markets.
- 31:19Speaker 2: That's code TO81 in partnership with DraftKings. The crown is yours.
- 31:26Speaker 4: We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be
- 31:50Speaker 4: right back.
- 32:10Speaker 2: And they're charismatic, got a lot of personality.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Very mannerly, too. Like, you guys have done an incredible job.
- 32:16Speaker 1: I remember we were watching the Super Bowl at our
- 32:19Speaker 1: favorite friend's house, the Pumps.
- 32:21Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 32:22Speaker 1: And you came over and I was like. You know
- 32:26Speaker 1: your kids are great. But it's great to see your
- 32:28Speaker 1: kids interact with other people. And so to watch them
- 32:30Speaker 1: and see how mannerly they were and polite and respectful.
- 32:34Speaker 3: I definitely got to give their mom some love for that.
- 32:36Speaker 3: She doesn't play with, she's very high on manners and
- 32:38Speaker 3: very high on schoolwork. She didn't play in those two areas.
- 32:42Speaker 3: So yeah, we definitely, it was a village to raise
- 32:45Speaker 3: them two little boys.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Because they were doing like little clips. They had like
- 32:48Speaker 2: a little podcast.
- 32:48Speaker 3: They had a show for a minute.
- 32:49Speaker 2: For a second.
- 32:50Speaker 3: And their mom was a hater on it. But it
- 32:53Speaker 3: was rolling.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Right. I know.
- 32:55Speaker 1: And I was.
- 32:56Speaker 2: it was just good to see like they were just open.
- 32:59Speaker 2: And I mean, I was kind of cleaning up like
- 33:00Speaker 2: they were cursing a little bit. You gave them a
- 33:02Speaker 2: little bit of freedom to say little things.
- 33:05Speaker 3: Oh man, I mean, my kids are my biggest joy,
- 33:08Speaker 3: my biggest success, the greatest thing that's ever happened to me.
- 33:11Speaker 3: And I told someone, you know, to play a long
- 33:14Speaker 3: time in the NBA and be fortunate enough to be
- 33:15Speaker 3: a part of a championship team, like I never got
- 33:17Speaker 3: the excitement. That excitement doesn't match seeing my kids just
- 33:22Speaker 3: excel in things they love and be good at stuff
- 33:25Speaker 3: they love to do. Just Being a father is the
- 33:27Speaker 3: greatest thing in the world, you know what I mean?
- 33:29Speaker 3: And I'm thankful to have four sons and then three
- 33:31Speaker 3: bonus kids, you know what I mean? So it's constant,
- 33:34Speaker 3: you know, just, it's a lot. Don't get me wrong,
- 33:35Speaker 3: seven kids is a lot. But, you know, just seeing,
- 33:39Speaker 3: I mean, the twins used to be able to, both
- 33:40Speaker 3: of them used to be able to fit in my
- 33:41Speaker 3: lap laying down. And now these dudes are 6'4, 200 pounds,
- 33:44Speaker 3: like questioning everything. I'll still smack the shit out of you,
- 33:48Speaker 3: you know what I mean? Questioning everything I say, but
- 33:50Speaker 3: it's just been great.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Are the youngest ones athletic too?
- 33:53Speaker 3: So the youngest one is going to be the monster.
- 33:58Speaker 3: So Ashton is seven. So he's seven. He won't be
- 34:03Speaker 3: eight until December. This kid is five foot two, 120 pounds,
- 34:08Speaker 3: and wears a size 10 in men's.
- 34:10Speaker 2: No way. What?
- 34:11Speaker 3: Bro, he's probably the biggest seven-year-old in the country. He's
- 34:16Speaker 3: a monster. But he's a baby, like he's really, and
- 34:18Speaker 3: he's just kind of getting out of his clumsy baby colt, giraffe,
- 34:22Speaker 3: tripping over my own feet. And then the baby, Austin,
- 34:25Speaker 3: who's going to be two tomorrow. Happy birthday to my
- 34:28Speaker 3: baby boy.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Happy birthday, Austin.
- 34:31Speaker 3: He's just as big as Ash at every checkup. So
- 34:33Speaker 3: my two youngest are probably going to be six tenors,
- 34:36Speaker 3: six eleven, maybe seven footers. Yeah, so they're going to
- 34:38Speaker 3: be monsters.
- 34:39Speaker 1: And not just how tall?
- 34:40Speaker 3: Not just five ten, but she's tall. Thick side, 200 pounds,
- 34:43Speaker 3: you know what I mean? And then I'm 6'8, 240,
- 34:44Speaker 3: so our babies are going to be big old boys.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Did y'all do this on purpose?
- 34:49Speaker 3: I saw her one time in a red dress with
- 34:51Speaker 3: all that ass, and I was just like, who is that?
- 34:53Speaker 3: She was with Shea. That was it. That's funny. So
- 34:57Speaker 3: we went to UCLA together. And then she ended up
- 35:00Speaker 3: going to another school after our freshman year, and I
- 35:01Speaker 3: hadn't seen her, bro, in 20-something years. And then All-Star LA.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Did you guys date then?
- 35:05Speaker 1: No.
- 35:06Speaker 2: I need to hang out with Matt hanging out at it.
- 35:08Speaker 3: I need to go with you. So 20 years later,
- 35:10Speaker 3: or 20-plus years later, we're at All-Star in LA, and
- 35:13Speaker 3: I'm about to get out to Kenny Smith's event. And
- 35:15Speaker 3: I'm in my car, and I see Shaya. So I
- 35:17Speaker 3: call Shaya Bryant.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Shaya, what up?
- 35:19Speaker 2: Kobe's sister.
- 35:19Speaker 3: What's going on? Yeah, so we're talking. I'm like, damn,
- 35:22Speaker 3: who's that girl in the maroon dress right there? She's like, oh,
- 35:23Speaker 3: you remember her? That's Anansa. And all I saw was that.
- 35:26Speaker 3: So I'm just like, damn. And she turned around and
- 35:28Speaker 3: smiled like, damn, we've been together ever since, bro.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Wow.
- 35:32Speaker 1: You mentioned Kobe.
- 35:33Speaker 3: That's my dog.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:34Speaker 1: I see the tattoo. I don't know if we can
- 35:36Speaker 1: get a close up.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Tell us about y'all's relationship.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Man, our relationship was interesting. It was, it started, well, I,
- 35:43Speaker 3: you know, we kind of met each other. He came to,
- 35:45Speaker 3: I want to say he came to Lakers in 96,
- 35:46Speaker 3: I don't know, I was thinking I went to UC
- 35:47Speaker 3: in 98. And there was always kind of a, you know,
- 35:50Speaker 3: him and He was just a little young for that team,
- 35:53Speaker 3: and there was some shit going on. So he was
- 35:54Speaker 3: always at UCLA.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Yeah, cutting a man's gym, right?
- 35:56Speaker 3: Eating, no, chilling.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Oh, just not to play?
- 35:59Speaker 3: Nah, he would be walking around campus like he was
- 36:01Speaker 3: a student.
- 36:01Speaker 2: He wasn't cold. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:03Speaker 3: So he was, you know, low-key.
- 36:04Speaker 1: I'm just saying, I guess because he didn't get a
- 36:05Speaker 1: chance to have a college experience.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Yeah, so he would be on our campus all the time.
- 36:08Speaker 3: I see him eating, hanging out, obviously playing, working out. So,
- 36:12Speaker 3: you know, getting a chance to play against him in
- 36:13Speaker 3: the summer. So, you know, I wouldn't even call it
- 36:16Speaker 3: a friendship then. It was just we knew each other and,
- 36:18Speaker 3: you know, got to play with each other a little bit.
- 36:20Speaker 3: He would come practice after our UCLA team, and I'd
- 36:23Speaker 3: come back in there and just watch him. I'd sit
- 36:24Speaker 3: up there, and I'm like, damn, this dude's only two
- 36:26Speaker 3: years older than me. There ain't no way I'm making
- 36:27Speaker 3: the NBA. I would just see how good he was,
- 36:29Speaker 3: and he was only a couple years older than me.
- 36:32Speaker 3: So it's just kind of always an admiration for him.
- 36:35Speaker 3: And then, you know, I missed MJ by a year.
- 36:37Speaker 3: So Kobe was the bar, you know what I mean?
- 36:39Speaker 3: So every time I got a chance to match up
- 36:40Speaker 3: with him and we'd lock horns, like I would take pride.
- 36:43Speaker 3: I mean, I always had to guard the best player. Kobe, Melo, D-Wade,
- 36:47Speaker 3: Kevin Durant, LeBron, you name him. That was my job
- 36:49Speaker 3: every night. But Kobe was the one. So it kind
- 36:52Speaker 3: of just kind of culminated. Obviously, there was always a
- 36:54Speaker 3: mutual respect for each other. But it culminated in that
- 36:57Speaker 3: Orlando ball fake situation where, you know, we almost fought.
- 37:01Speaker 3: And then we were supposed to go see them in
- 37:03Speaker 3: the finals again. And then Boston beat us in the
- 37:06Speaker 3: Eastern finals. And then they ended up getting their payback
- 37:08Speaker 3: against Boston in the finals. But right after that, I'm
- 37:10Speaker 3: a free agent. The money kind of starts drying up
- 37:13Speaker 3: in Orlando. They were telling me something during the season.
- 37:15Speaker 3: And then once it kind of came down to what
- 37:16Speaker 3: they were going to give me, it wasn't really what
- 37:17Speaker 3: it was supposed to be. So then. I'm thinking I'm
- 37:21Speaker 3: going to go to Miami right up the freeway, and
- 37:23Speaker 3: I'm talking to D-Wade and Pat Riley, and this is
- 37:25Speaker 3: on the way where LeBron and Chris Bosh are coming to,
- 37:28Speaker 3: and he's telling me what the lineups are and what
- 37:29Speaker 3: the plan is. So I'm like, cool, I'm just going
- 37:31Speaker 3: to go to Miami. And then I get a phone
- 37:33Speaker 3: call one day from a number I don't know, and
- 37:35Speaker 3: I don't even pick up numbers I do know. But
- 37:38Speaker 3: for some reason, God had me pick up the phone,
- 37:42Speaker 3: and it was him. I didn't even believe it. I
- 37:43Speaker 3: was like, who's this? Kobe look at the fuck this
- 37:46Speaker 3: ain't Kobe and it ended up being Kobe and we
- 37:48Speaker 3: kind of you know I congratulated him on the championship
- 37:50Speaker 3: and you know he kind of back and forth what
- 37:53Speaker 3: are you going to do this next season and I
- 37:55Speaker 3: told him you like it's like I'm not really sure
- 37:56Speaker 3: I might go to Miami just like man like anyone
- 37:59Speaker 3: crazy enough to fuck with me is crazy enough to
- 38:01Speaker 3: play with me do you want to be a Laker
- 38:02Speaker 3: I'm like hell yeah I grew up in California Showtime
- 38:05Speaker 3: Lakers magic fan hell yeah bro three days later I
- 38:08Speaker 3: was on a plane flying to LA and signed on
- 38:10Speaker 3: my contract to become a Laker and then from there
- 38:13Speaker 3: we went from teammates to like this like people used
- 38:18Speaker 3: to tell me like how did you get Kobe to
- 38:19Speaker 3: come out like he asked me if I wanted to
- 38:21Speaker 3: go out you know what I mean like we used
- 38:22Speaker 3: to just move together like pretty much every road trip
- 38:25Speaker 3: we'd either go eat something or go do something and
- 38:28Speaker 3: you know it was always my I know I mentioned
- 38:30Speaker 3: smoking three or four times but when I used to
- 38:32Speaker 3: land I would go in my bathroom and burn one
- 38:34Speaker 3: real quick and then I'm off what's the play LO
- 38:36Speaker 3: would always have a bus you know LA would have
- 38:38Speaker 3: the cars for us wherever you're doing but if no
- 38:40Speaker 3: one was doing nothing let's go get some food. I'm like,
- 38:41Speaker 3: all right, I'm going to smoke first. And then I
- 38:43Speaker 3: used to go, when are you going to smoke with me?
- 38:44Speaker 3: He's like, oh, when we win the championship together, I'll
- 38:46Speaker 3: smoke with you. Never got that done. But we just
- 38:50Speaker 3: went from, you know, competitors to teammates to like brothers.
- 38:53Speaker 3: And what I love most about Kobe was being able
- 38:55Speaker 3: to see the other side. I got to know Kobe,
- 38:57Speaker 3: you know, everyone got to know the Mamba and the
- 38:59Speaker 3: killer on the court. And I have my, he got
- 39:02Speaker 3: me plenty of times on the court, but just getting
- 39:04Speaker 3: to see him off the court and The love you
- 39:06Speaker 3: have for the twins, you know, the twins are four
- 39:08Speaker 3: or five years old when we come to Lakers and
- 39:09Speaker 3: he's Uncle Kobe's wrestling with them in the locker room.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Every shoe drop, they get shoes. I mean, they're four
- 39:15Speaker 3: years old with their first pair of Kobe's and literally
- 39:19Speaker 3: and it didn't even stop. You know, obviously he passed.
- 39:22Speaker 3: And but since then, Vanessa has picked up the torch.
- 39:24Speaker 3: where co left vanessa just sent the twins like 20
- 39:27Speaker 3: pair of kobe's yo i was like what the fuck
- 39:28Speaker 3: are all these boxes and it says their names on
- 39:30Speaker 3: them and i local them and they're just all kobe's
- 39:32Speaker 3: i'm like damn i couldn't get one pair like she's
- 39:34Speaker 3: sending them when i kid you not 20 30 pair
- 39:37Speaker 3: of kobe's you know what i mean so it's just
- 39:38Speaker 3: always that right seeing that other side seeing the father
- 39:42Speaker 3: he used to coach gg gg was two years older
- 39:44Speaker 3: than the twins out in Orange County and you know,
- 39:48Speaker 3: we'd be playing early games and you know, we would
- 39:50Speaker 3: talk the night before like, hey, what time you play?
- 39:52Speaker 3: What time you play? Sometimes, cause she was a little
- 39:54Speaker 3: bit older. We'd play 8 a.m. games and these kids
- 39:56Speaker 3: were eight or nine years old. Kobe would come to
- 39:58Speaker 3: an eight o'clock game on a Saturday and come watch
- 40:01Speaker 3: the twins play. And then, you know, we'd chill for
- 40:03Speaker 3: a little bit. Then we'd go watch Gigi play and
- 40:05Speaker 3: watch him coach. So it was just kind of that
- 40:06Speaker 3: bond that, you know, that not too many people got
- 40:09Speaker 3: to see cause he didn't let a lot of people in.
- 40:12Speaker 3: So it was- Did you guys ever talk about the flinch?
- 40:14Speaker 3: We did on our show. You know, we were the last.
- 40:17Speaker 3: I told him I wanted to fuck him up. Like,
- 40:18Speaker 3: I wanted to fight him.
- 40:19Speaker 2: So what went into that? Because a lot of people
- 40:21Speaker 2: don't really know. Everybody just sees the highlight.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Well, you know, T, I mean, you were a great
- 40:26Speaker 3: player yourself. There's tricks to the trade. And Kobe was
- 40:30Speaker 3: someone who would try to mentally attack you, too. So,
- 40:32Speaker 3: you know. elbowing you, grabbing you, doing all that little
- 40:36Speaker 3: shit that they're not going to call on him, but
- 40:37Speaker 3: they're going to call on the person that reacts to it.
- 40:39Speaker 3: So he had elbowed me in my sternum that game
- 40:41Speaker 3: and like knocked the wind out of me. And I'm like,
- 40:43Speaker 3: all right, motherfucker, this is what we on. And then
- 40:45Speaker 3: later in the game, I think this is, they show
- 40:48Speaker 3: this a lot. He tried to, he was guarding me
- 40:50Speaker 3: on the baseline, but he tried to come from the
- 40:52Speaker 3: backside and block the white shot and it just bounced
- 40:55Speaker 3: on the rim perfect where I went up and caught
- 40:56Speaker 3: a dunk tip and I pushed myself to him. So
- 40:59Speaker 3: when I came off the rim, I'm like in his
- 41:01Speaker 3: face and this motherfucker elbowed me from like and like
- 41:04Speaker 3: maybe bite my tongue and everything. And the rest just
- 41:06Speaker 3: standing there and doesn't say shit. So I'm like, fuck it.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Like we're about to have to get down. Like, you
- 41:10Speaker 3: know what I mean? So luckily I didn't, you know, me,
- 41:12Speaker 3: I'm a little unhinged on the court. Like I could
- 41:15Speaker 3: have just really threw the ball in his face, but
- 41:17Speaker 3: that wasn't even a pre premeditated move to like, you know,
- 41:20Speaker 3: if you look at me, I'm not even looking at,
- 41:21Speaker 3: I'm looking at Vince Carter cause it's a backdoor lob
- 41:23Speaker 3: for the play for Vince. So I'm looking at him,
- 41:25Speaker 3: but something in my body just said, throw the ball
- 41:27Speaker 3: in this fucker's face. So that's what I did. And it,
- 41:30Speaker 3: you know, it, it's, His eyelashes touched it, but didn't move.
- 41:35Speaker 3: And I'm just like, I didn't realize in the moment
- 41:39Speaker 3: what it was, what was going on. Obviously, after I
- 41:42Speaker 3: saw how close it was, I'm just like, yeah, he's
- 41:44Speaker 3: a killer. I thought he was. You know what I mean?
- 41:46Speaker 3: But to be honest with you, that... altercation in that
- 41:50Speaker 3: game is what ended up, you know, he always, he
- 41:52Speaker 3: respected dogs.
- 41:53Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 41:54Speaker 3: And that's what brought us together.
- 41:56Speaker 2: And that's what I've heard and noticed about Kobe. He
- 42:00Speaker 2: respects guys that really don't back down.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Because he's going to try, if you let him, he'll
- 42:05Speaker 3: mentally take you over and disrespect you.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Destroy you.
- 42:08Speaker 3: You know what I mean? And when you, because you
- 42:10Speaker 3: got to think the year before, he could win and
- 42:11Speaker 3: got Ron. Because Ron, remember Ron grabbed him in the
- 42:13Speaker 3: playoffs by his neck and not that Kobe was scared
- 42:16Speaker 3: or anything, but he, like if you bow down or
- 42:19Speaker 3: you show any sign of weakness, he's going to attack
- 42:20Speaker 3: like a shark, like a shark in the water. He
- 42:22Speaker 3: sees blood. But, you know, the fact that, you know,
- 42:24Speaker 3: some people don't play them games, he just, he respects that.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Yeah, because just think about, Artest ended up playing on
- 42:30Speaker 2: the Lakers too. Yeah.
- 42:31Speaker 3: So he went there the year before and then I came.
- 42:33Speaker 3: So it was the funny thing with us three, like
- 42:35Speaker 3: three of the better defenders in the league, like, Kobe
- 42:38Speaker 3: used to get mad because we would say, okay, now
- 42:40Speaker 3: that we're here, bro, you don't have to guard the
- 42:41Speaker 3: best player. We just kill on offense. But let a
- 42:43Speaker 3: motherfucker get two, four, six on. I got him. Like, nah, bro,
- 42:47Speaker 3: I fucking got him. You know, he would argue with
- 42:49Speaker 3: me and Ron to guard the best player. Like, even
- 42:51Speaker 3: though we told him, like, let us handle this. You
- 42:54Speaker 3: just score 40. You go score 40. So it was
- 42:56Speaker 3: such a cool competitive nature within us three because you
- 42:59Speaker 3: got three dogs out there.
- 43:01Speaker 2: And that me hearing you say that, that's you respecting
- 43:04Speaker 2: the game but understanding your role too. Yeah, that's it.
- 43:07Speaker 2: for the better of the team. Like, you ain't got
- 43:10Speaker 2: to tire yourself out on both ends. You know what
- 43:12Speaker 2: I mean? You got two defenders right here. Let us
- 43:15Speaker 2: do the dirty work.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Who's harder to guard, LeBron or Kobe?
- 43:18Speaker 3: Kobe. And this is no knock on LeBron. LeBron is strong, fast, incredible.
- 43:24Speaker 3: There's not much you can do with him, but Kobe's
- 43:26Speaker 3: just so skilled. Kobe attacks mistakes. If you have the
- 43:30Speaker 3: wrong foot leaning forward, if you have the wrong hand,
- 43:34Speaker 3: if you go for the shot, the skill– work of
- 43:38Speaker 3: kobe was like there's like there's even if you even
- 43:41Speaker 3: if you thought you had him stop he'll pump fake
- 43:43Speaker 3: you so many times until he gets you in the
- 43:45Speaker 3: air and you foul him oh man just three four
- 43:50Speaker 3: like all right this is the fifth fake he's got
- 43:52Speaker 3: to shoot this shit he'll pump fake three more times
- 43:54Speaker 3: then he go up and i have to foul him
- 43:55Speaker 3: just because i'm off balance so i just think the
- 43:57Speaker 3: detail and the skill of kobe was on i think
- 44:01Speaker 3: he's the most i think you know him and kairi
- 44:03Speaker 3: are right there but i think kobe being six six
- 44:05Speaker 3: just the most skilled player we've ever seen.
- 44:08Speaker 2: Yeah, just from the ability to score like at every level.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:12Speaker 2: And do it like with, like you said, with detail,
- 44:16Speaker 2: like counters. Like, yeah, LeBron's big. He ain't got the
- 44:20Speaker 2: bag that Kyrie or Kobe has.
- 44:23Speaker 3: But don't get me wrong. Bron was a motherfucker, bro.
- 44:25Speaker 2: No, that's what I'm saying. I'm not saying that he's
- 44:28Speaker 2: not that. But he ain't that. You know what I mean?
- 44:31Speaker 1: But the fact that he can do all that without
- 44:32Speaker 1: the bag is fucking fascinating.
- 44:34Speaker 3: And still do it.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Still do it. And they did 58 years old. I said,
- 44:38Speaker 3: such a cool, like my job, like obviously offense is
- 44:41Speaker 3: what gets the accolades and what gets you recognized. But
- 44:43Speaker 3: my job every night was to guard the best players
- 44:46Speaker 3: in the world. The Carmelo Anthony's, the Kobe's, the D-Wade's,
- 44:49Speaker 3: the Ginobili's, the Michael Redd's. Like, Every night, like, that
- 44:54Speaker 3: was the matchup. The T-Max, the Paul Pierce's, it's just
- 44:56Speaker 3: like that was every night I was zoned in to,
- 44:58Speaker 3: all right, I know I'm not going to stop them,
- 45:00Speaker 3: but I got to make them work for this 30.
- 45:02Speaker 3: If they're going to get 30 points, they got to
- 45:03Speaker 3: take 30 shots.
- 45:04Speaker 2: You know what I mean? So in high school, were
- 45:06Speaker 2: you like an offensive player?
- 45:07Speaker 3: No, I was an offensive guy.
- 45:09Speaker 2: So you were a similar guy.
- 45:09Speaker 3: I was a point guard. I was a 6'8, triple-double
- 45:12Speaker 3: point guard. I was, you know, 30, 11, and 10
- 45:15Speaker 3: in high school.
- 45:16Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Not comparing you two, but
- 45:18Speaker 2: Patrick Beverly, like he was a scorer in Chicago. Like
- 45:21Speaker 2: he was like– Like one of the top two scorers,
- 45:24Speaker 2: like averaging 30-something points a game. But then in the NBA,
- 45:27Speaker 2: that offensive game didn't transition.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Find your role.
- 45:30Speaker 2: So was that hard? That's what I was getting to.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Was that hard for you to do?
- 45:34Speaker 1: That started happening at UCLA, though, right?
- 45:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's slow because I went into two. I came
- 45:38Speaker 3: into Baron Davis' class. It was the class before me.
- 45:40Speaker 3: They were number one in the country. And then my
- 45:41Speaker 3: class came in number one in the country. So it
- 45:43Speaker 3: just kind of had, yeah, I was solid on offense
- 45:45Speaker 3: and I could still score. And could I? Did I
- 45:47Speaker 3: want to score more? But I had to kind of start, okay,
- 45:49Speaker 3: my versatility is what helped me. I was able to
- 45:51Speaker 3: play one through four. And in the league, I played
- 45:54Speaker 3: one through five because we had to transition to small
- 45:56Speaker 3: ball at that time. So I think to your point,
- 45:59Speaker 3: what keeps people from not maximizing potential or having the
- 46:03Speaker 3: long runs they have outside of not being mentally strong
- 46:07Speaker 3: is not being able to adapt, not being able to
- 46:09Speaker 3: read the room, not being able to fall into your role.
- 46:11Speaker 3: I remember Doc Rivers said, be a star in your role.
- 46:14Speaker 3: So whatever that role may be, you may not be
- 46:16Speaker 3: the superstar, But you could be a star. My role
- 46:18Speaker 3: was I was one of those early 3 and D guys.
- 46:21Speaker 3: You know, play defense, shoot the threes at the corners,
- 46:24Speaker 3: and when you get to the moment, rebound, half foul,
- 46:26Speaker 3: you know, dive on the flood. That was my role.
- 46:28Speaker 3: 50-50 balls, rebound.
- 46:30Speaker 2: And trust me, Matt will spray you now.
- 46:33Speaker 4: He'll spray you for it.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Trust me.
- 46:35Speaker 2: He will spray you from the perimeter.
- 46:38Speaker 3: But just understanding what the team needs. And, again, I
- 46:42Speaker 3: think a lot of guys couldn't understand, hey, I need to–
- 46:46Speaker 3: move my game a little bit to last.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Let's talk about our guy. Another Bruin. Sorry.
- 46:51Speaker 3: It's a little Bruin talk.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Westbrook's retired this year.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Let me just sit back. Yeah. Just hang on.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Everybody else is going to be your friend.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Right. Yeah. I'm just sitting back going along for the ride.
- 47:03Speaker 1: Um, how proud are you of him?
- 47:05Speaker 3: First of all, incredible. I don't necessarily have a, a
- 47:07Speaker 3: real personal risk. I don't know Russ like that, but
- 47:10Speaker 3: I've always been, I've played every summer.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:12Speaker 3: I've always been a fan from afar. Um, and really
- 47:15Speaker 3: just his motor is what captivated me. The fact that
- 47:18Speaker 3: you could play that hard all the time, consistently. Special player,
- 47:25Speaker 3: we may never see another player like Russ Westbrook.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Did you see the videos of him and Chris Paul
- 47:28Speaker 1: on the ship?
- 47:28Speaker 3: All I put was like flying money signs. Fuck what
- 47:32Speaker 3: they were doing. You see how big the boat was
- 47:34Speaker 3: they were on?
- 47:34Speaker 1: It was a giant boat. Unbelievable, bro.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Like what are we talking about? But no, I mean, Russ,
- 47:39Speaker 3: I mean, You know what's crazy about my era, like
- 47:43Speaker 3: there's only four or five guys that I played with
- 47:45Speaker 3: that are still, you know, you look at LeBron, Steph, KD, Klay, Draymond.
- 47:50Speaker 3: There's maybe 10 guys left in the league that I
- 47:52Speaker 3: played with. You know what I mean? Like our era
- 47:54Speaker 3: is coming to an end. And to see two of
- 47:56Speaker 3: the greatest point guards we've ever seen.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Chris Paul.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Guys that have taken so much negative. Bullshit talk from
- 48:03Speaker 3: the media and social media, but I really just want
- 48:06Speaker 3: to give both those dudes their flowers, man. Two of
- 48:08Speaker 3: the greatest point guards we've ever seen. The game is
- 48:10Speaker 3: definitely going to miss both of them. Both of them
- 48:12Speaker 3: were first about Hall of Fame. I had to get
- 48:14Speaker 3: on Skip Bayless' ass because... The day Russ retires, you
- 48:20Speaker 3: want to come out and talk about, he wouldn't be
- 48:21Speaker 3: in my, man, if you don't shut your motherfucking mouth,
- 48:23Speaker 3: he wouldn't be in my Hall of Fame.
- 48:25Speaker 2: Bro, but how?
- 48:26Speaker 3: And I don't mind, before you say what you say,
- 48:27Speaker 3: I don't mind you having that feeling about Russ.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Sure, that's his job as an analyst.
- 48:31Speaker 3: But not on the, like, let him have his day.
- 48:33Speaker 3: This man just put in, what, 18 years. He's a first,
- 48:36Speaker 3: no matter what you say, he's a first. Allow him
- 48:39Speaker 3: to have his day. You know, maybe the day after,
- 48:41Speaker 3: the day after that. Go into your little rant for
- 48:44Speaker 3: your clicks and your attention. But the fact that you
- 48:46Speaker 3: feel like you need to steal his day, the day
- 48:48Speaker 3: he retired, that should bother me, bro.
- 48:50Speaker 2: I'm with you. It bothers me too, bro. It's just
- 48:52Speaker 2: like we can never really enjoy the fruits of our labor.
- 48:59Speaker 2: And the flowers that we deserve, then you come on
- 49:03Speaker 2: your platform to try to demean him, destroy him. For what?
- 49:07Speaker 3: Why?
- 49:07Speaker 2: For what? Like, why are you skip? Are you doing
- 49:12Speaker 2: that bad now? Like, you don't have first take. You
- 49:15Speaker 2: don't have your sidekick, Shannon. Like, you don't really have really.
- 49:20Speaker 2: a lot of shows. Like, I mean, what's going on?
- 49:23Speaker 3: I don't wish bad on nobody, but I feel like
- 49:25Speaker 3: that hot take bullshit is on its way out.
- 49:28Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 49:29Speaker 3: Because there are so many more of these situations where
- 49:32Speaker 3: you can like, nah, bro, it ain't.
- 49:33Speaker 1: How it goes. And people don't want to hear it
- 49:34Speaker 1: told like that anymore.
- 49:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just such, I mean, we live in such
- 49:36Speaker 3: a negative time. time but particularly in sports like do
- 49:40Speaker 3: you realize how good he had to be to do
- 49:42Speaker 3: what he did or you how good you had to
- 49:44Speaker 3: be to do it so it's just like yeah.
- 49:46Speaker 2: It's crazy 42 what is 42 I don't know straight season.
- 49:49Speaker 3: Like it was like average incredible he averaged one the
- 49:52Speaker 3: whole time but I mean just to but just to
- 49:54Speaker 3: even be a pro athlete man I think I think
- 49:57Speaker 3: we we live in such a society now where everything
- 49:59Speaker 3: well I can do that you know Jake Paul some
- 50:01Speaker 3: I could be a foot no no bro you.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Can't I'm killing him every time he starts saying What
- 50:06Speaker 2: about that 1.5 you tried to pay the lady to,
- 50:09Speaker 2: you got a wife. What about that 1.5 you tried
- 50:11Speaker 2: to slip to the, was it a hairstylist or whoever
- 50:13Speaker 2: it was?
- 50:13Speaker 3: Skip.
- 50:14Speaker 2: I'm going to start bringing up that. Why are you
- 50:19Speaker 2: on us? Worry about that. And it makes no sense.
- 50:22Speaker 2: I mean, that's how ridiculous it is for him to really,
- 50:25Speaker 2: like I said, ruined this guy's retirement.
- 50:27Speaker 3: I just wish they had more appreciation for, whether you
- 50:30Speaker 3: like him or not, just have some respect and appreciation
- 50:33Speaker 3: for what these guys have accomplished.
- 50:35Speaker 2: It's none.
- 50:35Speaker 3: No, zero.
- 50:36Speaker 2: But they feel like.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Well, he needed some clicks because ain't nobody talking about
- 50:38Speaker 1: him anymore.
- 50:39Speaker 3: That's exactly why.
- 50:40Speaker 1: He's on Gilbert's old show trying to, you know.
- 50:44Speaker 2: And speaking of, you mentioned how quick Russ was. I've
- 50:49Speaker 2: always had hoop dreams. We've hooped together. But I remember
- 50:52Speaker 2: my first glimpse of Russ... You remember they had the hacks.
- 50:58Speaker 2: They had hacks.
- 50:59Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Everybody was going out. They had the hanger. Yep. And
- 51:02Speaker 2: they had this little program like every summer where everybody
- 51:06Speaker 2: was going. And they had the different courts everybody was running.
- 51:09Speaker 2: And then the main, the big court, like if you win,
- 51:11Speaker 2: you stay on. Man, I was on the team, ended
- 51:15Speaker 2: up playing on one of the courts. And then he
- 51:16Speaker 2: came over. Bro. Different. Blinding. Bro, it was blinding speed.
- 51:22Speaker 2: He was like... A blur. Beep, beep, roadrunner. And then
- 51:25Speaker 2: next thing you know, he's in the air.
- 51:26Speaker 3: In the rim, though.
- 51:27Speaker 2: Like, I'm talking about.
- 51:29Speaker 1: And he's only 6'3, right?
- 51:30Speaker 2: Yeah, he big.
- 51:30Speaker 3: He can bite the rim off. I'm talking about... The
- 51:33Speaker 3: combination of speed, athleticism, and strength.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Yes. It was unbelievable. And then, obviously, that injury... What
- 51:40Speaker 2: was that injury? Somebody bumped him at the— Patrick Beverly.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Remember? They were calling a timeout, and he tried to
- 51:45Speaker 3: go for a steal and hit his knee.
- 51:46Speaker 2: He got toys, meniscus, or something like that. Or something. Yeah,
- 51:49Speaker 2: and he really wasn't all the way the same, but
- 51:51Speaker 2: still like— Scary. I mean, dude.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Scary, scary.
- 51:55Speaker 1: He had that mamba kind of thing, too, as well.
- 51:58Speaker 3: He was a killer. A lot of people don't— He
- 51:59Speaker 3: had that Westbrook thing. I think it was something of
- 52:01Speaker 3: his own.
- 52:02Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 52:02Speaker 3: I don't think anyone was ever able to play with
- 52:04Speaker 3: that kind of tenacity and energy consistently.
- 52:07Speaker 2: And why do people like Russ?
- 52:11Speaker 3: Because I just think he marches to his own beat.
- 52:14Speaker 3: He don't give a fuck about what people say, what
- 52:16Speaker 3: they do, what they have to say about him. He
- 52:18Speaker 3: doesn't jump on shows and justify or clarify if that's
- 52:22Speaker 3: what you think. How you feel about me is your issue,
- 52:24Speaker 3: not mine. Again, I don't really know him like that,
- 52:27Speaker 3: but I'm guessing that's what he thinks. He just doesn't care.
- 52:29Speaker 2: And the stigma of you can't win with that type
- 52:33Speaker 2: of style. You can't win with this kind of play,
- 52:34Speaker 2: this guy.
- 52:35Speaker 3: He just happened not to win. I mean, there's plenty
- 52:36Speaker 3: of great players that just didn't happen to win. You know,
- 52:39Speaker 3: it takes so much luck to win a championship, man.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 52:42Speaker 3: So much. It takes more luck to me than anything.
- 52:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 52:45Speaker 1: And I hate that they judge people by their championships.
- 52:47Speaker 3: He just wasn't lucky.
- 52:48Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Ben, you mentioned championship. That
- 52:53Speaker 2: jogged my memory for a second. In the intro, we
- 52:57Speaker 2: should have introduced you as NBA champion. Yes.
- 53:01Speaker 3: I don't mind that, though, to be honest with you.
- 53:02Speaker 2: And that's what that's where I'm going. That's exactly where
- 53:06Speaker 2: I'm going. A lot of people don't know that you
- 53:09Speaker 2: won a championship. Yeah. You're an NBA champion. Does that
- 53:13Speaker 2: I know you don't care, but does that bother you?
- 53:16Speaker 3: No, because I didn't accept it.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 53:19Speaker 3: Because I got hurt. So, you know, I've always turned
- 53:23Speaker 3: down more money. And now being done, I want to
- 53:26Speaker 3: kick myself in my own ass. But I've always turned
- 53:28Speaker 3: down more money to go to better teams to try
- 53:31Speaker 3: to win. That's always been my whole thing. Like, obviously
- 53:34Speaker 3: we play and the money's great, but I wanted to
- 53:35Speaker 3: win a championship. You know what I mean? So I
- 53:37Speaker 3: came close in a few spots, but that Golden State
- 53:39Speaker 3: situation where I was able to actually win, I came in.
- 53:42Speaker 3: So I signed a three-year deal with SAC. I figured
- 53:45Speaker 3: I was going to finish in my hometown. They had
- 53:46Speaker 3: just built a new arena, trying to make the playoffs
- 53:48Speaker 3: for the first time in a long time. They trade
- 53:50Speaker 3: DeMarcus Cousins at the trade deadline. And me and Vladi
- 53:53Speaker 3: have a conversation. Like, Vladi, I'm 37 bro I can't
- 53:56Speaker 3: be a part of rebuild like what is going on
- 53:58Speaker 3: he's like what do you want to do I'm just
- 53:59Speaker 3: like should I want to try to win so unfortunately
- 54:02Speaker 3: but fortunately Kevin Durant hyper extends his knee and Golden
- 54:06Speaker 3: State needs a three man so I come in you
- 54:08Speaker 3: know for Kevin Durant to kind of just stop the
- 54:10Speaker 3: bleeding for a little bit but that's just such a
- 54:11Speaker 3: great team but I'm in the mix playing 20 plus
- 54:14Speaker 3: minutes a game and the game KD comes back it's
- 54:17Speaker 3: maybe like a week before the playoff start or a
- 54:20Speaker 3: few weeks before the playoff start I had the worst
- 54:22Speaker 3: brain ache on my life so I had such a
- 54:25Speaker 3: bad sprained ankle that I didn't really play in the playoffs.
- 54:28Speaker 3: And when I did, it was kind of messed up.
- 54:31Speaker 3: It was scrub minute type things. So it just, I've
- 54:33Speaker 3: always been someone that had to earn and scratch and
- 54:36Speaker 3: claw every step of my career. So I just kind
- 54:38Speaker 3: of felt like I was a, a spectator, you know, for, to, to,
- 54:41Speaker 3: to be on the side. I didn't, I wasn't out
- 54:44Speaker 3: there because if I was healthy, I would have been
- 54:46Speaker 3: out there helping guard Kawhi and all these guys on
- 54:48Speaker 3: each level that we would have went through through the playoffs.
- 54:50Speaker 3: And I just didn't get that opportunity. I mean, obviously
- 54:52Speaker 3: I was a, I understood the situation. By the time
- 54:55Speaker 3: I felt good, we're in the Western Conference Finals and
- 54:57Speaker 3: we're undefeated. So I know that you don't really mess
- 54:59Speaker 3: up a rotation for a rotational player, which I was
- 55:02Speaker 3: at that time. You know what I mean? So I'm
- 55:03Speaker 3: just kind of OG and helping. You know, Clay had
- 55:05Speaker 3: his head down a little bit and some stuff and
- 55:07Speaker 3: just talking to guys and staying ready, but just not
- 55:10Speaker 3: really necessarily getting the opportunity. So, you know, when you're
- 55:11Speaker 3: able to win the championship, my best part about that
- 55:14Speaker 3: is obviously. steve kerr and them guys are giving me
- 55:16Speaker 3: a chance but the twins were there every step of
- 55:18Speaker 3: the way and steve talked about it when i had
- 55:20Speaker 3: him on my pod the twins were at practice the
- 55:22Speaker 3: twins were on the plane with us the twins are
- 55:24Speaker 3: in the hotel with us the twins are kicking it
- 55:26Speaker 3: and hanging out with the guys and shooting with steph
- 55:28Speaker 3: and kd and if you watch it was funny like
- 55:31Speaker 3: during the championship ceremony when we're all on the stage
- 55:33Speaker 3: at the arena after we won like the twins are
- 55:35Speaker 3: in there trying to get the championship trophy from steph
- 55:37Speaker 3: and the mvp trophy from kd and take pictures with
- 55:40Speaker 3: the shit so they're like seven or eight years old
- 55:41Speaker 3: just Living a dream, bro. So that was my favorite part.
- 55:45Speaker 3: I got them championship rings and everything. So my favorite
- 55:47Speaker 3: part of that journey was that my sons got to
- 55:50Speaker 3: experience it.
- 55:51Speaker 2: But give yourself grace, man.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Yes. They wouldn't have had that record without you, sir.
- 55:55Speaker 2: I mean, too. And then just like you said, your journey,
- 55:57Speaker 2: what you. Yeah. Giving to the game. Absolutely. Give yourself grace, man.
- 56:01Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 56:02Speaker 2: Because, man, you've earned it.
- 56:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I definitely think my journey and my body of
- 56:06Speaker 3: work would speak to, okay, yeah, you definitely earned it. But,
- 56:08Speaker 3: you know, we're competitors.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, exactly.
- 56:10Speaker 3: And the fact that I wasn't out there, I was
- 56:12Speaker 3: hurt and I couldn't contribute. It was funny. So I
- 56:15Speaker 3: got a championship ring later because I wasn't playing no more.
- 56:18Speaker 3: So they had me come back. And I got the
- 56:21Speaker 3: ring and me and the twins were at the game.
- 56:23Speaker 3: But it was a big, huge box. So I had
- 56:25Speaker 3: it put in a room and then I left and
- 56:27Speaker 3: the room was locked. So I didn't have my ring
- 56:29Speaker 3: for almost over like a year and some change. And
- 56:31Speaker 3: then the Warriors, I was working on ESPN and like
- 56:34Speaker 3: Raymond Ritter, my guy, head PR guy there, found out
- 56:37Speaker 3: what day I was working and had someone drive it
- 56:39Speaker 3: from the Bay and present it to me on, um,
- 56:42Speaker 3: on air.
- 56:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:42Speaker 4: On air.
- 56:43Speaker 1: So that was, I know you got to go. You
- 56:45Speaker 1: have a hard out. You just got to give me
- 56:46Speaker 1: two seconds of the 44 interview.
- 56:50Speaker 3: Obama, man. That's a, You know, that's someone that I
- 56:54Speaker 3: feel like our community has. He's at the top of
- 56:56Speaker 3: the totem pole. He's at the top of the mountain. And,
- 56:58Speaker 3: you know, obviously being someone who's, you know, politically engaged and,
- 57:03Speaker 3: you know, understanding how much his hands were tied during
- 57:07Speaker 3: his time in office and kind of understanding all the
- 57:10Speaker 3: nuances and being the first, you know, Just so much
- 57:15Speaker 3: admiration and respect. And shout out to my guys, Chris
- 57:18Speaker 3: and Jerron, who used to work for his administration. They're
- 57:20Speaker 3: the ones that plugged the Michelle interview and the Barack interview.
- 57:24Speaker 3: But it was cool, man. We got the chance to
- 57:25Speaker 3: go out to Chicago and go to his center before
- 57:29Speaker 3: they opened it. So we were actually the first. He
- 57:31Speaker 3: took the first jump shot in that gym with us.
- 57:35Speaker 3: You know, it took him about they only showed the
- 57:36Speaker 3: shot he made. It took him about eight to 10
- 57:38Speaker 3: shots to make. I was I was rebounding for him,
- 57:41Speaker 3: but it was so cool just to see him in
- 57:43Speaker 3: his element. And he had all the guys that he
- 57:45Speaker 3: used to play pickup with. We played some shooting games
- 57:47Speaker 3: the day before on Saturday and shot with them. And
- 57:49Speaker 3: then he sat down with us on Sunday and just
- 57:52Speaker 3: and just talked, man. And just to see how cool
- 57:55Speaker 3: and down to earth and just the way he presents
- 57:57Speaker 3: himself and holds itself. It's just like, how did we
- 58:00Speaker 3: go from this to this? piece of shit in the
- 58:02Speaker 3: gutter that we got going on, right? You know what
- 58:04Speaker 3: I mean? He just raised the bar. Him and his
- 58:07Speaker 3: wife raised the bar so much, man. So it was
- 58:10Speaker 3: just really cool. First of all, to be able to
- 58:11Speaker 3: sit down with her before that, but be able to
- 58:13Speaker 3: sit down with him and see the museum that they've
- 58:15Speaker 3: built and the library and just that whole complex where
- 58:19Speaker 3: he grew up at, where he and Michelle kind of
- 58:22Speaker 3: first got together at. It was just a really cool experience, man.
- 58:25Speaker 3: Really cool.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Okay, before we let you go, man, we have a
- 58:28Speaker 2: segment here called Four Downs.
- 58:29Speaker 1: You know he was a football player, too.
- 58:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. We played a lot. I played a
- 58:35Speaker 2: number of his.
- 58:35Speaker 3: Flag football games. Those games used to be so popular, bro.
- 58:39Speaker 2: Bro, I just sat on the plane with some guy
- 58:42Speaker 2: that used to be in a lot of... Adam Sandler's
- 58:46Speaker 2: movie he kept bringing up that game he was so
- 58:49Speaker 2: annoying bro you know when I get on the plane
- 58:51Speaker 2: I'm just like chill I want to go to sleep
- 58:52Speaker 2: yeah and I don't even want to talk to everybody
- 58:54Speaker 2: bro and I'm just I ain't the climate that we
- 58:57Speaker 2: in I ain't really trying to talk to nobody you
- 58:59Speaker 2: know what I mean to be honest and he I
- 59:01Speaker 2: just knew as soon as I sat he sat down
- 59:04Speaker 2: I know this is I was like I tried to
- 59:06Speaker 2: put my headphones on bro even with my headphones he
- 59:09Speaker 2: kept tapping me telling me about like he's like are
- 59:12Speaker 2: you who I think you are and then when people
- 59:14Speaker 2: tell me that I'm like no I don't know who
- 59:17Speaker 2: you think I am so I'm like no so he
- 59:19Speaker 2: kept tapping me again and he started got on his
- 59:21Speaker 2: phone and then he said are you T.O. and I'm
- 59:25Speaker 2: like yeah and then then he started to like oh
- 59:29Speaker 2: I remember you from Matt Barnes. Athletes vs.
- 59:31Speaker 3: Cancer.
- 59:32Speaker 2: Me and Snoop. Yeah, the flag football game. Yeah, my
- 59:34Speaker 2: kid was there, man. He's like, you had an experience
- 59:37Speaker 2: with him, blah, blah, blah. He told me. He was
- 59:38Speaker 2: really cool, blah, blah, blah. Bro, he told me about the... So, yeah,
- 59:41Speaker 2: I know Matt plays a little bit of everything. Softball, too. Right.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Anything competitive, we damn near, we're going to be there.
- 59:48Speaker 1: That's great.
- 59:48Speaker 2: Basketball, softball. Softball, yeah. Golf now? No, I don't golf.
- 59:55Speaker 2: But you starting to do golf?
- 59:57Speaker 3: I do bowling.
- 59:58Speaker 2: I've been seeing you on the bowling, on the lanes.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: But yeah, this guy. So we're going to get to
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: our fourth. We have a segment called Four Downs, man.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: The first question is, what has fatherhood taught you? That's
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: first down. What has fatherhood taught you?
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: Patience and not being afraid to love out loud. I
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: think I came from a tough love environment from my dad. Obviously,
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: my mom was very loving until she passed. But my
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: dad was a tough love. And I have toughness in me,
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: but I love my boys. I kiss my boys until
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: they tell me, Dad, you can't kiss me no more.
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: We're not cool. So I just think loving out loud
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: is what parenthood has taught me.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Gotcha. Speaking of sports, youth sports, what are parents getting wrong?
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: All of it.
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: They believe the hype. Parents are the worst part of kids' sports.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: They believe the hype, the bullshits. You know, your kid
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: faced some adversity. He's going to a new team. You're
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: starting your own team. Everyone thinks their kid's going. So
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: they're going to these academies that specialize in sports but
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: don't care about school. Pay rent and they got them trainers. Yeah,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: don't get me started with that shit. Parents fuck up
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: their child. And they don't know it, though, because they
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: don't know any better. And everyone thinks they're going pro.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: And the worst one is the parent that didn't make
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: it or thought he should have it.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: Didn't vicariously live through their kids. Parents are the worst
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: part of youth sports by far.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Third down, man. You ain't in the end zone yet.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: You're almost in there. Third down. What is the nature
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: of Matt Barnes, the business of Matt Barnes today? Oh, man.
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: Just being able to provide platforms for my brothers and
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: sisters to tell real, authentic stories and be one of
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: the leaders in this digital space. We're building a digital
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: network over there at All The Smoke Productions.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: You got All The Smoke. Boxing now?
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: Boxing, MMA, baseball, football, basketball, about to be politics, about
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: to be music.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, with all of that, man, you're at fourth down.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: That really was my my fourth down question is like,
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: what's what's the next version of Matt?
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: Yeah. Just continuing to build out. You know, again, we're
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: building out a network where we're working on a few
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: documentaries right now. We're standing up some new verticals. Chris
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: has helped me stand up the golf space. So just
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: continuing to empower my people, give people opportunities and again
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: to tell. Great stories. I think, unfortunately, I'm still a
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: huge linear TV, but that's dying out. So digital is
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: what it is and being kind of one of the
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: forefronts in this space of sports storytelling.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Matt? There you have it. Tell them where we can.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: Find you besides your 26 TV shows. Matt underscore Barnes 9.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: That's where I'm active on Instagram. I really don't do
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: too much. I may have other accounts, but other people
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: run those. I run my Instagram most of the time.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: And then just all the Smoke Productions, man. I'm really
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: happy about what we're doing with the baseball, so follow
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: all the Smoke Baseball, ATS.Baseball on Instagram. And, man, I'm
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: living my dream interviewing guys that I grew up. you know, idolizing.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: So that's what I'm most proud of right now in
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: that space. Until we launch our golf space. Woo!
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: We finna kill them.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: There you have it. Matt Bowens on Get to the Point.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: Follow, like, and subscribe us at GTTP Pod.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: Yep. And on YouTube, GTTP Podcast.
