Transcript
- 0:00All right, here we go.
- 0:14Hebrews 3, 1 through 6.
- 0:16Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle
- 0:24and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him, who appointed him, just as
- 0:30Moses also was faithful in all God's house.
- 0:35For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, as much more glory as the
- 0:42builder of the house has more honor than the house itself.
- 0:47For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.
- 0:53Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant to testify to the things that
- 0:59were to be spoken later.
- 1:01But Christ is faithful over God's house as a son.
- 1:07And we are his house if we indeed hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
- 1:17Three basic principles I'm going to be sharing with you and some supporting statements that
- 1:22go along with that scripture and other things.
- 1:24So let's go.
- 1:27First principle number one, Christ the builder and faithful delegate to the family of God
- 1:33reminds us of our heavenly calling.
- 1:37Christ the builder and faithful delegate of the family of God reminds us of our heavenly
- 1:42calling.
- 1:43You guys remember that wonderful hymn?
- 1:46Turn your eyes upon Jesus.
- 1:48Look full into his wonderful face and the things of earth will go strangely dim in the
- 1:53light of his glory and grace.
- 1:55There's a verse in there that says this, his word shall not fail you, he promised.
- 2:02Believe him and all will be well.
- 2:05Then go to a world that is dying, his perfect salvation to tell.
- 2:11Helen H. Lemel, 1922.
- 2:14Now in Hebrews, when we're dealing with this issue of Christ the better prophet, there's
- 2:22some clarifications that are being said here I want you to pay attention to.
- 2:26It says therefore holy brothers, holy brothers.
- 2:31This means the brethren in Christ or those exalted to the same heavenly place.
- 2:39That's important because there's this term right afterwards that says you who share in
- 2:45a heavenly calling.
- 2:49Now what's interesting is A would imply that there would be many heavenly callings but
- 2:53there's only one.
- 2:55It's actually I think the right translation, the right word that should have been used
- 2:58there is if we as holy brothers, those who are exalted to the same heavenly place as Christ,
- 3:07we are with him in his heaven and that he sits at the right hand of God the Father,
- 3:13then we who share in that heavenly place have what we share is the heavenly calling, the
- 3:22heavenly calling.
- 3:24There is one heavenly calling.
- 3:27That heavenly calling is the calling to salvation.
- 3:30It's like I don't have a different calling than you.
- 3:34God doesn't have a purpose for my life and he has a purpose for yours.
- 3:37It's the same purpose.
- 3:38It's the same calling.
- 3:41Eternity with Christ, the eternal calling.
- 3:45It's important that we understand this because when he says consider Jesus, you'll understand
- 3:51that this word consider means to fix one's mind or eyes upon.
- 3:57So when you're running a race and you want to finish the race and you feel like you want
- 4:00to give up, the reason why you finish the race and you run hard is because you see the
- 4:05finish line.
- 4:07You know there is a goal and so you're striving so he is our prize as we have stated before.
- 4:15Fix one's mind or eyes upon Jesus.
- 4:19Consider Jesus.
- 4:22Do you think about Jesus?
- 4:24Are you looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith?
- 4:30Very important as we are considering him, as we are fixing our minds upon him.
- 4:35Why should we fix our minds upon him who is our heavenly calling?
- 4:41Well, because he is the apostle.
- 4:44He is the delegate and messenger.
- 4:47He is the first apostle.
- 4:50He is the better apostle.
- 4:53You can only be an apostle if you have, one, if you're Christ, two, if you've been taught
- 4:59directly by Christ, have seen Christ and have walked with Christ.
- 5:05Very important.
- 5:07No one else can claim that.
- 5:09There's no other apostles on the earth.
- 5:13So if there's a denomination that teaches you, hey, that's apostle such and such, run.
- 5:18There is no other apostle.
- 5:21The apostles that all of the Word of Faith movement and the Charismatic movement keep
- 5:25pushing apostleship.
- 5:27There aren't no apostles.
- 5:28There are no apostles.
- 5:29I know aren't no is a double negative.
- 5:32That's why I said it.
- 5:33That means no, no, no more.
- 5:37Okay?
- 5:39That's not good English, but as a preacher, I think we can get away with the aren't no
- 5:44or as they would say the ain't no.
- 5:48All right?
- 5:50Now if Christ is the apostle and the high priest of our confession, then you understand
- 5:58why we should fix our eyes upon him.
- 6:01He's the message and he is the messenger.
- 6:04He is the high priest, the one who on our behalf goes before the father and cares for
- 6:10us, deals with our sin.
- 6:13He is the advocate for you.
- 6:16What is this confession?
- 6:19The word confession here also means the profession.
- 6:22What do we profess?
- 6:24Christ crucified.
- 6:25Paul says, I have known nothing before you except Christ and him crucified.
- 6:32The gospel is our confession and the gospel is what we profess.
- 6:37So if this is true, then we don't need anything else and I don't need.
- 6:43You like that?
- 6:44All right.
- 6:45Good.
- 6:46He is our apostle and high priest.
- 6:51Now what's interesting is verse two, who was faithful to him who appointed him?
- 6:58In other words, God, the father has set before time, he who would be our propitiation.
- 7:06Do you remember we talked about that last week?
- 7:09That's why he is the one who was faithful to accomplish what the father has planned
- 7:16perfectly.
- 7:19This is not by surprise.
- 7:20This was by design.
- 7:22You're like what?
- 7:25God has designed salvation.
- 7:28He is the creator of it.
- 7:30He's the one who plans it.
- 7:31He's the one who established it.
- 7:33He's the one who sets it up and has fulfilled it.
- 7:36It's an amazing redemptive work of God.
- 7:40And if this never happened, if man never sinned, you would never experience the amazing character
- 7:46of God's redemption.
- 7:49It's necessary.
- 7:52So much bigger than our minds can ever imagine.
- 7:55So when he says, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house, meaning God's family,
- 8:03who's more faithful?
- 8:07So this word God's house is the family of God.
- 8:10It's not a building.
- 8:13You are that building.
- 8:14You are the living stones.
- 8:16You are the household of God, the family of God.
- 8:18Two, as believers.
- 8:21Principle number two, unless the Lord builds the house, those who build labor in vain,
- 8:30Psalm 127, one.
- 8:32Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain, Psalm 127, verse one.
- 8:39Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be a wise man who built
- 8:48his house on the rock.
- 8:51Matthew 7 24.
- 8:53That's what Jesus says.
- 8:55Jesus is the builder.
- 8:57He is the rock.
- 8:59Now in Hebrews three, three and four, it says this, for Jesus has been counted worthy.
- 9:07Really, really an amazing word.
- 9:10Axial.
- 9:11Axial means deserving, fit or right.
- 9:16In other words, he is the one who is deserving.
- 9:19He is the only one who is fit and he is the only one who is right of more glory than Moses.
- 9:27Now why would the writers say this?
- 9:29Because understand, apart from Moses, there is no greater prophet in the mind of a Jew.
- 9:36He is in their minds the pinnacle.
- 9:40Because many times you would see in the conversation that Jesus has, well you're greater than our
- 9:45father Abraham or you're better than Moses.
- 9:50Yes, he is.
- 9:54And that's the point.
- 9:55He is the only one who is deserving, fit or right of more glory than Moses.
- 10:00Moses is so unique that out of all the prophets, a prophet would receive a word from God by
- 10:08vision or dream.
- 10:11That's how he would hear from God.
- 10:13Moses, though, on the other hand, is the only prophet that God spoke face to face.
- 10:21That's how unique Moses is.
- 10:23And what the writer is saying, what the father is saying here is Jesus is the one who is
- 10:29more deserving, fit and right of more glory than that.
- 10:34Why?
- 10:35Because he is the one who spoke to Moses.
- 10:38Here check it out.
- 10:39He says, as much more glory as the builder has or of a house has more honor than the
- 10:49house itself.
- 10:50In other words, Christ is the builder and if Christ is the builder, the house doesn't
- 10:55get more glory.
- 10:57The builder gets the glory.
- 10:59I wonder if we really understand that.
- 11:04Because there's a lot of houses of worship, quote unquote, being built in the name of
- 11:08God, but it's not in the image of God.
- 11:12And so this word builder means to equip, prepare or make ready, to erect or construct.
- 11:34See he is the only one who is worthy, who is capable of equipping his people, preparing
- 11:42his people, making ready his people, building a temple of his people and constructing that
- 11:49temple.
- 11:50He is the one who carasculco a Zeus.
- 11:57And that house, the builder has more honor than the house itself.
- 12:04But what do we talk about when we talk about churches?
- 12:07Do we talk about Christ, the king of the church?
- 12:10Or we talk about man, you got to go to that church.
- 12:13It's amazing.
- 12:14That music is awesome.
- 12:16You ever notice that?
- 12:21Churches are recognized for the music they play, not for the Christ they reflect.
- 12:29Isn't that interesting?
- 12:34You know, I mean I have to go to Elevation Worship, that music is banging.
- 12:40But then you look at their life and go, your life is trash.
- 12:44But that's church.
- 12:47People want churches that fit their taste buds, but they don't want churches that are biblically
- 12:52sound.
- 12:54We are committed as a part of the body and the family of God to reflect Christ in everything
- 12:59we do.
- 13:00Everything.
- 13:01And sometimes that's going to make people uncomfortable.
- 13:04And that's okay.
- 13:06So if this is true, look what it says in verse 4.
- 13:11For every house is built by someone.
- 13:13There's a lot of people building houses, but the builder of all things is God.
- 13:20And what's interesting is, if God builds it, he can also take it down.
- 13:26What's amazing about the church, in the church that he's building is, not even the gates
- 13:30of hell can prevail over her.
- 13:34That building of people is firmly established.
- 13:38Why?
- 13:40Because anyone who builds a house on the rock is wise.
- 13:48Wise.
- 13:51Third principle.
- 13:53Christ the true heir and rightful owner and deed holder of all that was promised.
- 14:01Christ is the heir of the promise.
- 14:05Christ is the rightful owner of the promises and he is the deed holder of the promise.
- 14:12I want you to get that.
- 14:13It's very important.
- 14:15Think about this.
- 14:16Christ comes, gives his life, pays the price, his world, his land, his city, and then we
- 14:27go, no, it doesn't belong to him.
- 14:29It actually belongs to, you guessed it, the Jews.
- 14:35And that's not biblical.
- 14:38If he's the one who fulfilled the rightful promises, if he's the one who accomplished,
- 14:44if he's the one who fulfilled the deed that's required for it, then he's the one who owns
- 14:49it.
- 14:50And that's clarified here.
- 14:53Here's the scripture.
- 14:54All things have been handed over to me by my father.
- 14:59All.
- 15:02What's all things?
- 15:03All things have been handed over to me.
- 15:06In other words, I am the owner.
- 15:08I am the heir and I am the deed holder.
- 15:12Mine.
- 15:13He has the right to that.
- 15:14He is the one who is fit and right to receive all of those things.
- 15:20He is the faithful.
- 15:22Now if all of this is true, it continues to say in Matthew 11, 27, and no one knows the
- 15:28son except the father and no one knows the father except the son and anyone to whom the
- 15:35son chooses to reveal him.
- 15:39Interesting.
- 15:43Many people claim rights to something they don't own.
- 15:47God owns it all.
- 15:49This is important because in verse five through six, we clarify this.
- 15:54Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant.
- 16:00Moses was faithful in all of God's family as a servant.
- 16:07What is a servant?
- 16:08He's a slave.
- 16:11His job is to serve.
- 16:13He is the one to serve.
- 16:14He's to serve the owner.
- 16:17Now what's interesting about this particular word in the Greek, this word is theropon.
- 16:23Theropon.
- 16:24Now theropon is, what I liked about this particularly is it speaks especially to Moses.
- 16:32It's like one word that's not, it can apply to many others, but specifically when you're
- 16:39talking about the servant Moses, this is his word.
- 16:44Out of all the words, this is the word that they would associate servant Moses, theropon.
- 16:51The word means an attendant or discharging the duties committed to him.
- 16:57Isn't that interesting?
- 17:01Out of everyone, Moses was the servant of God.
- 17:05Moses was the deliverer.
- 17:08Moses was the redeemer.
- 17:10Moses was the high priest.
- 17:13Moses was the what?
- 17:14The general leader.
- 17:17He was all these things to the people of Israel.
- 17:22But nonetheless, he was not the builder owner.
- 17:27He was the servant.
- 17:29He was the theropon.
- 17:31Now if Moses is the one who is the attendant or the discharging of the duties committed
- 17:36to him, specifically speaking of Moses, what was he discharged to do?
- 17:43Well that's a good question because it's right there in the verse.
- 17:47To testify of the things that were to be spoken later.
- 17:53What things?
- 17:55Jesus talks about this when he's on the road to Emmaus.
- 18:00Does he not?
- 18:01A couple guys come around and he says, have you not learned all that Moses and the prophets
- 18:11had spoken about me?
- 18:15These are the things that were to be spoken later.
- 18:19These are what Moses was pointing to.
- 18:22Moses the servant, the faithful witness, was pointing to someone greater than him.
- 18:30He was pointing to Jesus the better.
- 18:34That's the point.
- 18:36And so we read in verse 6, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son.
- 18:46If Moses was faithful over God's house as a slave, as a servant, as a theropon, then
- 18:53Christ is faithful over God's house as the heir, the owner.
- 19:03No matter where you go, you can go to verse after verse after verse.
- 19:09If God has given him all things and he is the rightful heir of the inheritance of God,
- 19:17then why in the world would he exclude one particular thing?
- 19:22The land of Israel.
- 19:23Does that make sense?
- 19:25Oh no, it doesn't make sense.
- 19:28As a matter of fact, he clarifies this because you see what he is talking about.
- 19:35It's never been about the land.
- 19:40Look what it's about.
- 19:41The second part of verse 6, Christ is faithful over God's house as a son and we are his house.
- 19:55You are his inheritance.
- 19:59You.
- 20:03Everything he has is for himself to be with his people for eternity.
- 20:09That's the point.
- 20:10He is far better than Moses ever could be.
- 20:14And Moses knew this.
- 20:16I mean, can you imagine you go up to Mount Sinai and you stand there and you're watching
- 20:22a bush not burn and the one standing in the midst of the bush is one who was the son of
- 20:27man.
- 20:29Jesus is standing in the bush.
- 20:33Conversation.
- 20:35He goes, he comes back, he meets with them again on Mount Sinai and what's he do?
- 20:43Has a conversation.
- 20:44Let me see your glory.
- 20:46No, you'll die, buddy.
- 20:48Well just let me see the back.
- 20:50Okay.
- 20:51And then he meets with Jesus face to face and have a conversation.
- 20:55I mean, it's an amazing thought.
- 21:00You think Moses didn't know?
- 21:01Of course Moses knew.
- 21:02He knew exactly who he was talking to.
- 21:05And so Moses was always pointing to the one who he spoke to face to face.
- 21:12See Jesus.
- 21:15See Jesus the better tabernacle.
- 21:19See Jesus the better sacrifice.
- 21:22See Jesus the better prophet, the better messenger.
- 21:25See Jesus.
- 21:27See Jesus the one who was to be lifted up.
- 21:32Your salvation.
- 21:33It's always been pointing to him and Moses knew this.
- 21:38And so if Christ is faithful over God's house as a son and we are his house, what's the
- 21:47proof that we are his house and here it is.
- 21:49You ready?
- 21:50Last part.
- 21:51If indeed we hold fast and are boasting, right?
- 22:00With confidence and are boasting in our hope.
- 22:05So here it is.
- 22:06If we, if we indeed hold fast, this word hold fast means to keep secure or firm possession
- 22:13of.
- 22:16Let's the scripture say that in the last days will happen.
- 22:20Many will fall away from the faith.
- 22:22What is the faith?
- 22:23The gospel.
- 22:24What do you see all over the place?
- 22:27Anybody preaching the gospel?
- 22:29No.
- 22:31And so many have fallen away.
- 22:34They're not, they're not holding their confidence.
- 22:38So if we indeed hold fast, keep possession, firm possession of our confidence, parousia
- 22:47is the word here.
- 22:49Parousia, if you want to roll the Rs.
- 22:52Free and fearless confidence.
- 22:55Do we really live in a way where it is free and fearless confidence?
- 23:04How confident are you in Christ in his gospel?
- 23:06Right?
- 23:07So when we're looking at this reality of the fear, the free and fearless competence, do
- 23:12we really walk in that with that kind of, that kind of, uh, of, uh, boldness.
- 23:22And then he uses the word of our boasting.
- 23:24This boasting means that of which one glories.
- 23:28Do you glory in your hope?
- 23:32Do you have confidence in the hope?
- 23:36If you have confidence in the hope, fear, free and fearless confidence.
- 23:41If you glory in the hope, what is your hope?
- 23:45Now what's interesting about this word hope is this word hope means joyful and confident
- 23:50expectation of salvation or he who is its foundation.
- 23:56Oh, so he's the better builder.
- 24:04It's his house.
- 24:06And if he builds his house, he builds his house on him who is the cornerstone and the
- 24:10servant do thereupon points to the builder and says, he is the better.
- 24:18And we who are his building, who are his house, we who, who, who, who are his family, we need
- 24:27to make sure that we have established firmly our confidence and our boasting our glories
- 24:35in the one who is its foundation.
- 24:41Christ is the cornerstone.
- 24:44He is the beginning.
- 24:46Christ is the foundation, which the prophets and the apostles have left for us.
- 24:53He is the truth, the foundational.
- 24:55He is the sound doctrine that we walk in.
- 24:59Can there, can there be anything that will blow this house down?
- 25:03No.
- 25:04Why?
- 25:05Because if he has established her on the rock, then we will be strong and firm.
- 25:17The wise man who built his house on the rock, who's the wise man?
- 25:21Jesus is that wise man.
- 25:24So why is Christ the true and better prophet? because Moses can't even compare.
- 25:36He's a candlestick compared to the, the brightest glory you can imagine.
- 25:45So let's get ready for a little walk in the Old Testament next week to clarify this out
- 25:51more as we look at the servant Moses and his pointing to Jesus.
- 25:58So we can see the real, true and better prophet.
- 26:01Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 26:05Thank you that you, Lord Jesus, are the true and better.
- 26:12That you in your wisdom have built a house that is firmly established upon you and upon
- 26:17your doctrine, your truth, and that you are continually building her up and that we are
- 26:25your family, that you in your loving grace not only elect us and call us into your home,
- 26:33but that you sanctify us and purify us that we may be presentable, washed by the water
- 26:39of the word and be presentable to you for when you come.
- 26:44May you be honored and glorified in Jesus name.
- 26:48Amen.
