Lucas: We're going back to 'apa', which means 'what'. We covered it a while ago, but it's so versatile that a fresh look is worth it. Let's start with a simple one: apa ini? Luna: Apa ini? That's 'what is this?' Right? Lucas: Exactly. Apa ini. Say it with me: apa ini. Luna: Apa ini. Lucas: Perfect. Now imagine you're at a hawker stall and you point to a dish. You ask, apa ini? Luna: Apa ini? What is this? The seller might say, ini nasi lemak. Lucas: Good. And if you point to something further away, you'd say, apa itu? What is that? Luna: Apa itu? So 'ini' is this and 'itu' is that. Lucas: You've got it. Apa itu. Luna: Apa itu. Lucas: Now let's put it in a sentence. You might want to ask someone what they want. Apa yang awak mahu? What do you want? Luna: Apa yang awak mahu? That's a bit longer. Let me try: apa yang awak mahu? Lucas: Perfect. And if someone asks you that, you can reply, saya mahu ini. I want this. Luna: Saya mahu ini. I want this. Lucas: Exactly. And remember, 'mahu' is 'want'. So you're literally saying 'I want this'. Luna: So if I point to a drink and the seller asks, apa yang awak mahu? I can say, saya mahu ini. Lucas: Yes. And you'll be understood. Now, one more 'apa' phrase that's super common: apa khabar? How are you? Literally 'what news'. Luna: Apa khabar? Oh, I've heard that before. It's like a greeting. Lucas: Right. You can use it anytime. Apa khabar? And the reply is often, khabar baik. Good news. But we'll keep it simple today. Luna: Okay, so let me review all five. Apa ini? Apa itu? Apa yang awak mahu? Saya mahu ini. Apa khabar? Lucas: Wow, you nailed them all. Let's do a quick scenario. You're at a fruit stall with me. I point to a weird fruit and ask, apa ini? Luna: Apa ini? I'd say, saya tidak tahu. But I could also ask, apa itu? if I point to something else. Lucas: Perfect. And if the seller asks, apa yang awak mahu? You can say, saya mahu ini. Luna: Saya mahu ini. And then I walk away happily with my fruit. Lucas: Exactly. And don't forget to say apa khabar when you meet a friend. It's a great conversation starter. Luna: Apa khabar? See, I'm using it already. Lucas: You are. So we've revisited these five phrases. Let's say them one more time: apa ini, apa itu, apa yang awak mahu, saya mahu ini, apa khabar. Luna: Apa ini, apa itu, apa yang awak mahu, saya mahu ini, apa khabar. That felt good. Lucas: Great job. Remember, repetition is key. Practice these till we chat again. And if you enjoyed this, consider supporting us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It helps us keep making these free lessons.
