Latest / Harder Than Life / Why Your Belly Won’t Go Away After 40 Even If You Train and Eat Clean
Transcript
- 0:00If you're training five days a week and eating clean and your stomach still hasn't moved in a year, I need you to hear me because it's not your calories.
- 0:09It's that past 40, your stress, yes your stress, starts deciding where your body puts fat and nobody warns you about that.
- 0:18Hit subscribe, I put one of these out every week.
- 0:22Stay to the end of this video and I'm walking you through the three things I changed that have nothing to do with food to eliminate that belly fat.
- 0:30I'm Kelly Siegel and this is Harder Than Life.
- 0:33Let's get into it.
- 0:34The belly diet can't fix.
- 0:37The harder I pushed, the softer I got.
- 0:40Effort was going up while the mirror was going the wrong way.
- 0:45When that's happening, effort is never going.
- 0:48The missing variable.
- 0:49Believe me, I tried it with the 555 workouts.
- 0:52Here's a pattern I see everywhere.
- 0:55It's with executives I know, seven, eight figure career earners, personal trainers.
- 1:01They have their macros dialed in and the same stubborn midsection on every one of them.
- 1:09I'm calling out the patterns, not the people.
- 1:12This is something that you haven't thought of yet.
- 1:16And it has nothing to do with some of the tips and tricks that you're gonna hear.
- 1:22You've already tried that harder stuff of cutting carbs, adding cardio, going keto, tightening your fasting window, and the belly still held.
- 1:32You've been running an experiment where nobody told you about the third variable, which I'm going to teach you if you stay with me.
- 1:40This is not about willpower, my friends.
- 1:43The same blame loop is part of the problem.
- 1:47And I'll show you in a few minutes why blaming yourself literally makes that belly worse.
- 1:53So here's what I see.
- 1:55Lean arms, decent chest, visible effort everywhere else,
- 2:01Yet that midsection doesn't match the rest of the body.
- 2:05That mismatch is the diagnosis.
- 2:09I like to tease it a little bit, call it a little beer belly, but it's not because so many people aren't drinking that much anymore.
- 2:15Most people have given it up.
- 2:17So here's the science, the plain talk.
- 2:20Cortisol is your alarm system.
- 2:23It's not evil.
- 2:24It's the hormone that got your ancestors through famine and war.
- 2:30brilliant and bursts the poison on a slow drip.
- 2:35Now, when I turn 40 and when you guys turn 40, the rules change.
- 2:40With age, testosterone drifts down and cortisol, you guessed it, sensitivity goes up.
- 2:47So the more you lose testosterone, you gain stress, and then your sensitivity as you get older is even worse.
- 2:55So all your stress from your 20s and 30s
- 2:59kind of compound in your 40s and then they itemize into your waistline.
- 3:07The body thinks the war is on.
- 3:09Chronic stress tells your system a crisis is coming so it stockpiles emergency fuel in that belly next to the liver where it's fastest to burn in a famine that never arrives.
- 3:23So think about it.
- 3:24It's holding on in case of emergency to this fact.
- 3:28In case the stress that you think is going to come comes, which it never does.
- 3:33And it still just holds up.
- 3:34There's two kinds of belly fat.
- 3:37There's the pinchable stuff under the skin, which is cosmetic and the deep visceral fat around your organs.
- 3:45It's a chemical factory.
- 3:46It's inflammatory, metabolically active, and the kind that builds stress.
- 3:54That cortisol stress eats your muscle.
- 3:58It's a breakdown of hormones, chronically elevated, and it cannibalizes the muscle you've been training, which drops your metabolism while it grows your waist, a double hit, double whammy, if you will.
- 4:13You're going to laugh when I say this one, the sleep and cravings loop.
- 4:17High cortisol wrecks your sleep.
- 4:19Bad sleep spikes your hunger hormones and suddenly the disciplined guy is inhaling carbs at 9 p.m. and calling it a willpower failure.
- 4:28It's chemistry.
- 4:30For me, when I'm really stressed, I don't necessarily grab carbs.
- 4:34I grab sugar, which is even worse.
- 4:36So the cruelest loop of them all is stress builds the belly and then you stress about the belly, which builds the belly.
- 4:45The harder you hate it,
- 4:47the better it holds and the bigger it gets.
- 4:51And here, all of you, HDL Nation, the high performers have it the worst.
- 4:58Your operating system, if you're listening to this, is on chronic stress.
- 5:03The drive that built your career is a cortisol faucet that never, ever shuts off.
- 5:10You high performers don't have stress episodes.
- 5:13you have a stress baseline and it's always there.
- 5:18And the more successful we get, the more your stress goes up.
- 5:23Nobody tells you.
- 5:24Every level up adds headcount, adds stakes, adds inbox, adds cost.
- 5:32The income grew, but so did the stress.
- 5:36If you're anything like me, my friends,
- 5:38You stack stimulants and it's just throwing fire on the whole problem.
- 5:44Four coffees on top of an already elevated baseline isn't energy.
- 5:48It is literally a gasoline with matches.
- 5:51You're supplementing the exact hormone that's storing the fat.
- 5:56Don't do it and I fall victim to this a lot.
- 6:00All these Thursday episodes,
- 6:02I tell you from experience, wise people learn from other people's mistakes, smart people learn from their own mistakes, or is it the other way?
- 6:09Either way, wisdom is knowledge applied.
- 6:11So I'm giving you all the knowledge that I ignored for years.
- 6:15If you've been listening to me at all, you knew last year that I did 555 workouts.
- 6:19Doing that level of training adds another stressor, and it really hurts.
- 6:24A brutal workout.
- 6:26on five hours of sleep and a fried system isn't discipline.
- 6:31It's another cortisol spike.
- 6:34You can literally train your belly bigger.
- 6:38Did you hear that?
- 6:39And I did it.
- 6:40555 workouts.
- 6:41Couldn't figure out why I wasn't moving the needle at all.
- 6:44You can literally over train.
- 6:47That badge of honor I wore and is a disease.
- 6:51Grinding without rest is the one addiction
- 6:55that the business world does applaud, but yet the stress belly is what has it the worst.
- 7:01So here are my receipts.
- 7:04This is the truth, same training, different body.
- 7:08We're six months into 2026.
- 7:10I trained hard through those grinding years, building NTM at war speed.
- 7:16The workouts never stopped.
- 7:18Heck, I was still partying and drinking, but the system underneath them was fried and the mirror kept the score, which launched us, the HDL Nation.
- 7:29The one change that you've been eight minutes into this had nothing to do with working harder or the gym at all.
- 7:36I changed three things.
- 7:39None of them food, none of them a new program.
- 7:43And with the same training, my body composition changed tremendously.
- 7:48I'm in the best shape of my life, people.
- 7:50Six pack is ripped.
- 7:53If you look today, I'm wearing a tank top.
- 7:55I did that because it's a little hot in here today.
- 7:58It's really warm out.
- 7:58It's a Sunday and I'm actually recording.
- 8:01What I want you to understand too, there's another component of this.
- 8:03It's the six inches between your ears.
- 8:04The wounds, my childhood trauma couldn't be outworked.
- 8:07Neither can stress.
- 8:09The overall of everything I teach, written in body fat, maximum effort with no momentum isn't discipline.
- 8:15It's an unaddressed stress problem.
- 8:18And sometimes that stress is just literally...
- 8:20something you didn't even know exists.
- 8:23I'm not selling a theory.
- 8:25Same gym, same lifts, same food, different stress level, different body.
- 8:31Stay with me and run the experiment for yourself, and I'm going to break it down even further.
- 8:37Your belly is an invoice, and you can't help but notice it.
- 8:42This is a leadership problem in a fitness costume.
- 8:46Stay with me.
- 8:47The belly is built by how you run your life.
- 8:51The calendar, the commitments, the refusal to delegate, the literally trying to do everything yourself, not by what's on your plate.
- 9:00I want you to audit your stressors like their expenses.
- 9:04You review your P&L monthly.
- 9:06Most guys have never even written down their top cortisol sources.
- 9:12The people, the phone always being tied to this thing and the commitments they already regret.
- 9:20Go back and listen to that.
- 9:21Your stop stressors, meetings that could have been emails, the people that suck the life out of you, the energy vampires.
- 9:29They're constantly being tired to your phone and always saying yes to everything.
- 9:34You can't out-train the life you refuse to change.
- 9:37That belly is feedback, not failure.
- 9:41Your body's invoicing you for how you're living and the invoice doesn't stop until the behavior does.
- 9:46Literally, if nothing changes, nothing's changed.
- 9:50You've waited 11 minutes into this and here's what you're waiting for.
- 9:54You stayed.
- 9:55Here are the three things that I changed and nothing to do with food.
- 9:59But please make sure that you do these in order that I made them.
- 10:04They are this way for a reason.
- 10:06Change number one.
- 10:08I did the stress work, the deep inner work, the therapy.
- 10:12Turning 40 year old alarm off at the source, which was childhood trauma.
- 10:17I dealt with it, but I didn't go all the way down to the core.
- 10:20The belly started moving when the threat level dropped because the body stopped stockpiling for a war that was over.
- 10:27I was literally still fighting trauma that I thought I had fully integrated.
- 10:34I had to go several steps deeper.
- 10:36So do the stress work, number one, change.
- 10:38Number two, I redesigned my calendar with delegation and the word no.
- 10:44Here's something I learned from one of my mentors.
- 10:46If somebody can do the job 80% as well as you would, it's theirs.
- 10:5280% done by somebody else is 100% awesome.
- 10:56I built NTM to run on scorecards and systems instead of my cortisol or my fears and scarcity.
- 11:04Every task I handed off,
- 11:06was a dose I stopped taking.
- 11:09So number one, stress work.
- 11:11Number two, delegate.
- 11:12Number three, and this one is the doozy.
- 11:17I made recovery non-negotiable.
- 11:2078 hours of sleep.
- 11:23That aforementioned phone out of the bedroom.
- 11:26I chose to take gratitude walks on the Fridays instead of another beatdown session.
- 11:32Low intensity movements burns the stress feel without spiking more of it.
- 11:39That one I learned the hard way, folks.
- 11:42Doing 555 workouts, I depleted my nervous system to the point where I was getting sick all the time, and I thought it was a badge of honor.
- 11:53This order really matters, because most of you are gonna skip right to number three and quit.
- 12:00because you can't sleep your way out of a life that's attacking you.
- 12:04If you want better fruit, you must address the root.
- 12:08So the source first, structure second, recovery third.
- 12:13In that order, your boundaries are your hormone therapy.
- 12:16I need you to have a hard stop on your evening emails.
- 12:20I want you to say no more than you say yes.
- 12:23And usually there's one no that needs to be said and you've been avoiding it.
- 12:27Address that.
- 12:28These aren't lifestyle preferences.
- 12:31They are mandatory interventions for your nervous systems, for your stress.
- 12:38Here's another one.
- 12:39Measure the waist, not your weight.
- 12:42I weigh a lot, 215 to 220, but my waist is at 34.
- 12:48So the scale lies during this fix.
- 12:50Muscle returns as visceral fat leaves,
- 12:54Track the tape measure and your sleep hours.
- 12:57Numbers, not vibes.
- 12:59Don't trap the feeling, track how you look.
- 13:03All right, here's your homework.
- 13:04You made it this far.
- 13:05This was a short one.
- 13:07This week.
- 13:08Write down your top five stress sources, not foods.
- 13:14Here are the sources I want you to go through.
- 13:15Your commitments, the people that are in your ecosystems, the patterns that you keep running on repeat.
- 13:24I'm going to say that again.
- 13:25Patterns.
- 13:26You are, we're on life's merry-go-round.
- 13:29You got to jump off that merry-go-round or else you're just going to get sick and puke.
- 13:33Get back on life's roller coaster and enjoy it.
- 13:37I want you to be honest enough to put real names on the page for your own eyes.
- 13:43Some people you need to let go.
- 13:46And that includes employees and vendors.
- 13:51People that train you.
- 13:52Those aforementioned employees.
- 13:53energy vampires.
- 13:55Homework number two, kill or delegate one, just one task.
- 14:01Hand it off, shut it down, but just say no, and then hold that for 30 days and let that tape measure drain you.
- 14:11It feels funny at first, but man does it feel freeing after you have all this new energy and all this renewed energy.
- 14:20Time and, oh man, hardest one to do, but the most important one that'll pay off the dividends.
- 14:27You'll hear me say, I protect my peace at all costs.
- 14:31Peace is a fat loss strategy.
- 14:34Because the more peace you have, the less stress you have, and it just peels off the belly fat.
- 14:41And keep in mind, peace isn't the absence of hard work.
- 14:44It's the calm in the middle of it.
- 14:47Build that and watch your body finally match your effort.
- 14:51This stuff works, my friends.
- 14:54Again, I wanna go back to the three things just to give you a summary.
- 14:58Do the stress work on yourself.
- 14:59Redesign your calendar.
- 15:01And then the third thing is make recovery non-negotiable.
- 15:04If you've been blaming your diet for a problem your calendar created, I need you to subscribe to this and send this to people whose belt disagrees with their work ethic.
- 15:15Face your fears, live your dreams.
