- 0:04Speaker 1: This is a podcast called twenty five whist Stalking Parts,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and they were a whizz So yeah, it's too bad,
- 0:11Speaker 1: But what did you expect. It's a podcast called twenty
- 0:15Speaker 1: five Whistles twenty Wine.
- 0:20Speaker 2: We've had some awesome guests sit down with us on
- 0:22Speaker 2: the podcast this year, so I want to look back
- 0:23Speaker 2: at some of our favorite interviews that maybe you missed.
- 0:27Speaker 2: First up, head coach of the number four seed in
- 0:29Speaker 2: this year's college football playoff, Joy McGuire from Texas Tech
- 0:33Speaker 2: Text twelve and one on the year they won the
- 0:35Speaker 2: Big twelve. Coach McGuire's put his name up there with
- 0:37Speaker 2: the best up and coming coaches in the country. He
- 0:40Speaker 2: just signed a new seven year contract extension with Tech,
- 0:43Speaker 2: so B congrats to him, and man, they're awesome here
- 0:46Speaker 2: he is Coach Joey McGuire. Let us welcome one of
- 0:50Speaker 2: my favorite coaches. He's now the hunter. The hunted has
- 0:54Speaker 2: turned into the hunter. Coach McGuire, let's up.
- 1:00Speaker 3: And what's up?
- 1:00Speaker 4: Brother?
- 1:01Speaker 3: So good to see you and be on your show.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I appreciate it.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Man, where on the priority list is it for you
- 1:06Speaker 2: to make sure you guys have maybe an advantage or
- 1:10Speaker 2: are just ready to take a shot at the NFL.
- 1:13Speaker 4: It's high.
- 1:14Speaker 3: You know, we talk about it all the time. You know,
- 1:16Speaker 3: Number one, you're coming here to get a great education,
- 1:20Speaker 3: and one B, you're preparing yourself could be a pro.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Now we talk about being a pro like being a
- 1:25Speaker 3: great dad, being a great husband. You know, I mean,
- 1:28Speaker 3: you're a pro at what you do. But these guys
- 1:32Speaker 3: that we have on this team, there's a lot of
- 1:34Speaker 3: them that have the ability and athletic and mindset to
- 1:39Speaker 3: be in the NFL. So we want to make sure
- 1:40Speaker 3: we're preparing them for that. You walk into our team meetings,
- 1:44Speaker 3: everybody's going to have a notebook, everybody's taking notes, everybody's
- 1:47Speaker 3: locked in. Teach them how to watch film, watch an
- 1:50Speaker 3: extra film. One of my big deals that I talk about,
- 1:55Speaker 3: excuse me, every single day, it's taking care of your body.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Because you and I both know there's a lot of
- 2:01Speaker 3: guys in the NFL that are still in the NFL
- 2:03Speaker 3: because they can stay healthy. And there's a lot of
- 2:05Speaker 3: guys that have been cut over the history of the
- 2:09Speaker 3: NFL because they can't stay helpy. And they might be
- 2:11Speaker 3: better than one guy, but they just can't stay help
- 2:14Speaker 3: So we we spend a lot of time with that.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Are you all football all the time, even when it's
- 2:18Speaker 2: not your football?
- 2:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I love it.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I meat up with it, you know, especially college football.
- 2:23Speaker 3: I love watching It's just a pageantry and and you know,
- 2:27Speaker 3: it's it's almost like a movie at different stadiums, and
- 2:31Speaker 3: you know, it's I'm heat up with it. You know,
- 2:34Speaker 3: I'll watch a little bit of pros pro wise, I'm
- 2:37Speaker 3: trying to watch our guys. Anybody Wou's playing, you know,
- 2:40Speaker 3: I'll tune in and watch a couple of you know,
- 2:42Speaker 3: we have it in the background while I'm watching Feeling.
- 2:44Speaker 3: But yeah, I don't have a lot of hobbies. You know,
- 2:47Speaker 3: it's hanging out with my dog and my wife and
- 2:50Speaker 3: watch football.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Is it different every year what the players do as leaders?
- 2:54Speaker 2: You have some years where you just trust your captains
- 2:57Speaker 2: to actually have meetings with the team, and some maybe
- 2:59Speaker 2: your captains aren't established. Is it based on you know,
- 3:02Speaker 2: who the captains are every year?
- 3:03Speaker 3: One hundred percent? You know, we we've got a really
- 3:06Speaker 3: strong group. Three of my captains are back. We had
- 3:10Speaker 3: five captains last year. Three of them returned Baron Morton,
- 3:14Speaker 3: Jacob Rodriguez and Brostromirez.
- 3:16Speaker 4: But one thing that we did.
- 3:18Speaker 3: There were some really strong alpha males that came in
- 3:25Speaker 3: and they had big voices. They had been captains at
- 3:27Speaker 3: their previous spools, and so we wanted to make sure
- 3:30Speaker 3: they had a voice. And so like a guy like
- 3:32Speaker 3: Skylar Gil Howard has been huge for us. And so
- 3:36Speaker 3: this is a player led team. You know, I can
- 3:39Speaker 3: send out one text to my leadership group. Whatever that
- 3:42Speaker 3: text says, it's gonna get taken care out.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Next up is the runner up in this just Heisman
- 3:47Speaker 2: Trophy race. Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia. Diego became Bandy's first
- 3:52Speaker 2: ever Heisman finalist, led Vanderbilt to their first ten win
- 3:55Speaker 2: season of program history, had thirty six total touchdowns and
- 3:58Speaker 2: had over four thousand total yards cards. The crazy part
- 4:01Speaker 2: is when we had Diego and studio before the season,
- 4:04Speaker 2: he said, Hey, I want to win the Heisman, and
- 4:06Speaker 2: we didn't like, oh yeah right, but it was like okay,
- 4:08Speaker 2: but he did it. Congrats to Diego on a great
- 4:10Speaker 2: season here. He is good to see you. Thanks for
- 4:13Speaker 2: spending some time with us.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Appreciate you, Bobby, Thanks for having me.
- 4:15Speaker 2: We were talking to coach Lee last year and he
- 4:18Speaker 2: was talking about, you know, it's hard to get into Vanderbilt.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and to recruit players, it's got to be
- 4:22Speaker 2: a special type of player. I didn't realize that. You
- 4:26Speaker 2: It sounds like juniors and seniors can't transfer in. You
- 4:28Speaker 2: have to have graduated to come in. So that puts
- 4:30Speaker 2: a lot of stress on You didn at school right,
- 4:32Speaker 2: like to get all that done for sure.
- 4:34Speaker 5: I mean I was taking twenty one credits. I was
- 4:36Speaker 5: still working out, you know, two three times a day,
- 4:39Speaker 5: still going to practice, watching them practice. But it was
- 4:42Speaker 5: all online, so that was cool.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Whenever I tried to do like online when I got
- 4:46Speaker 2: a ticket, I spent way less time invested in being
- 4:50Speaker 2: on because it was like easily available. So I did
- 4:52Speaker 2: terrible at taking like Driver's Head online. Yeah yeah, so
- 4:55Speaker 2: I feel like if I took online classes, I would
- 4:57Speaker 2: not pay attention.
- 4:57Speaker 5: We should have just typed it into chagbt what we
- 4:59Speaker 5: got to do it?
- 5:00Speaker 2: That's true, Yeah, different times, not.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Saying I do that, not saying I do that. Just
- 5:04Speaker 5: a few students.
- 5:05Speaker 2: What's Vandy like to go to class? I'm assuming you're
- 5:08Speaker 2: going to class.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Oh yeah, you meet a lot of interesting kids at class.
- 5:11Speaker 5: They want to like basically own the world, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 5: where someone like like their parents are just really interesting
- 5:17Speaker 5: or they just tell you their background. And that's what
- 5:19Speaker 5: I like doing. I like learning about people and then
- 5:22Speaker 5: building relationships like that. And so I met a few
- 5:24Speaker 5: people just like in the hallways and stuff who are
- 5:28Speaker 5: just interesting, you know, their parents or something are high up,
- 5:31Speaker 5: or they're from Nashville, they own some like real estate.
- 5:35Speaker 5: And but I really like the students at Vanderbilt.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Can you go online classes now?
- 5:40Speaker 5: So I have an all online major right now? Yeah?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 5:45Speaker 5: So I'm really bought into football.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah did they make sure do most guys do that?
- 5:50Speaker 5: No? Actually, not from Vanderbilt. We got a lot of
- 5:53Speaker 5: smart kids on our roster. That's what makes that's what
- 5:56Speaker 5: makes us elite.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, why did you choose Vanderbilt? Well?
- 6:01Speaker 5: I chose it because at New Mexico State are my
- 6:05Speaker 5: head coach, offensive coordinator, safety's coach, quarterback coach at think
- 6:11Speaker 5: who else running back coach? They took vander picked up
- 6:15Speaker 5: about six or seven of our coaches, and then they
- 6:19Speaker 5: took like four of our players, and then so I
- 6:22Speaker 5: was like, shoot, I might as well join them, you know.
- 6:24Speaker 5: And then once coach kill really went to Vanderbilt That's
- 6:27Speaker 5: when I was like, Okay, I'm bought in.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Whenever you come over or you're thinking about coming over,
- 6:32Speaker 2: are they like, hey, diego, there's a good shot you
- 6:34Speaker 2: can play or is it just you're just believing yourself
- 6:37Speaker 2: and go not really knowing I guess, not knowing how
- 6:39Speaker 2: to say it, but not really having an understanding of
- 6:42Speaker 2: where you're going to fit the depth chart.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Well, there was a quarterback battle going in. I kind
- 6:46Speaker 5: of scouted that going into it, but the starter had
- 6:49Speaker 5: just left, so I knew the spot was open and
- 6:51Speaker 5: there wasn't going to be no favoritism or anything like that.
- 6:54Speaker 5: And all I asked for going in is because I
- 6:57Speaker 5: know there's a lot of politics in the SEC and
- 6:59Speaker 5: like these big conferences. So I told him I'll come
- 7:03Speaker 5: if you promised me that it's a fifty to fifty
- 7:05Speaker 5: shot and the better person will play.
- 7:07Speaker 2: So you didn't even ask for the guarantee to start.
- 7:09Speaker 2: You just wanted a fair shot to win the job.
- 7:11Speaker 5: I just wanted a fair shot to win the job.
- 7:13Speaker 2: What was the scheme difference? Offensively from New Mexico to here?
- 7:17Speaker 2: Same thing Because the coaches came there, a lot of
- 7:19Speaker 2: it were running the same same terminology and everything same terminal.
- 7:22Speaker 5: There was a little bit of a twist because of
- 7:24Speaker 5: our offensive line coach. He coached like Lamar Jackson at Louisville,
- 7:29Speaker 5: and so we took a slight little twist with that,
- 7:33Speaker 5: and so I had to learn a little bit, but
- 7:34Speaker 5: it wasn't too much learning that I had to do.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Did you feel that when you came in you were
- 7:39Speaker 2: equal to the guy immediately? And I don't know who
- 7:42Speaker 2: you run the quarterback battle with. Did you guys start
- 7:45Speaker 2: at the same place or did you come in a
- 7:46Speaker 2: little behind and you had to catch up.
- 7:48Speaker 5: I would say I was probably ahead, just because I
- 7:52Speaker 5: was at New Mexico State for a year and a
- 7:53Speaker 5: half with the offensive coordinator and stuff.
- 7:56Speaker 2: So you knew what he was saying, Yeah, what you
- 7:58Speaker 2: were expected.
- 7:59Speaker 5: And I was in the So I like practice. I
- 8:01Speaker 5: would go watch practice every single day in the spring
- 8:03Speaker 5: because they could in practice, and like on seven on
- 8:06Speaker 5: seven and team reps, I would take my drop back
- 8:09Speaker 5: when he said hike, I would take my drop back.
- 8:10Speaker 5: I'd go through my reads and I'd throw the I'd
- 8:13Speaker 5: fake throw the ball before like the quarterback would do it.
- 8:15Speaker 2: So it's like being on the on deck circle and
- 8:17Speaker 2: time pitches. Yep, you're there taking cuts just you.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Know, uh, timing it just mental reps.
- 8:23Speaker 2: What are you like in the huddle?
- 8:24Speaker 5: Oh, I'm a I'm real serious in the huddle, Like
- 8:28Speaker 5: once it's business, Once that clock starts, it's all business
- 8:30Speaker 5: from there on out. And then I try to just
- 8:33Speaker 5: get everyone prep give everyone confidence to go into the
- 8:37Speaker 5: next play and just succeed. If someone misses a block
- 8:39Speaker 5: or something, you know, I'm smacking him on his ass
- 8:41Speaker 5: and just tell him, hey, you got it.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Why do your guys believe in you?
- 8:46Speaker 5: I think they just see that. You know, I'm not
- 8:50Speaker 5: going to go out without a fight, Like I want
- 8:53Speaker 5: to win more than anything else in life. Like this
- 8:56Speaker 5: is all I know. All I know is football. Without football,
- 8:58Speaker 5: I don't know what I would do.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Do you like before game to be extremely hype or
- 9:03Speaker 2: because we've had other guys come in like ma fighters,
- 9:06Speaker 2: they don't want to be hyped. They want to have
- 9:08Speaker 2: good adrenaline, but they don't want to be hyped because
- 9:10Speaker 2: then they don't react and think the same. They want
- 9:12Speaker 2: to be as calm as possible. Where are you before
- 9:14Speaker 2: the game starts?
- 9:15Speaker 5: Oh I'm hyped. I'm jumping up and down. I'm ready
- 9:19Speaker 5: to go, you know. And then sometimes what's kind of
- 9:22Speaker 5: like embarrassing though, is sometimes when your energy is too
- 9:26Speaker 5: high and then you're just like starting to come down
- 9:28Speaker 5: and focus, you catch like these yawns that are like
- 9:30Speaker 5: really kind of embarrassing and you don't want no one
- 9:32Speaker 5: to see us, or you're like eating like one of
- 9:34Speaker 5: these or something like that.
- 9:36Speaker 2: What are the facilities like at Vanderbilt? And I would
- 9:39Speaker 2: like for you to walk back to both schools because
- 9:42Speaker 2: I would assume each time was a big come up
- 9:45Speaker 2: and it felt different.
- 9:47Speaker 5: So from coming from Juco, we worked out in a
- 9:50Speaker 5: tent literally, Uh, it was squat racks, like if you
- 9:53Speaker 5: walked out on the on concrete and you were working
- 9:56Speaker 5: out in the parking lot. We just put squat racks
- 9:59Speaker 5: on them. And it was a a dome kind of
- 10:04Speaker 5: kind of like Arizona State's indoor, but it was just
- 10:06Speaker 5: concrete and we just we squatted in there. We benched
- 10:09Speaker 5: in there.
- 10:10Speaker 2: And then it sounds like prison I'll be honest with you,
- 10:12Speaker 2: that's what it kind of what it sounds like, the
- 10:14Speaker 2: prison yard with like a little ten over the top
- 10:15Speaker 2: of right right.
- 10:16Speaker 5: It was a military school, and the only way that
- 10:17Speaker 5: you were able to get like an extra workout in
- 10:20Speaker 5: is they had like the pull up bars, the dip bars,
- 10:24Speaker 5: and so at Mimi, you really couldn't be up at
- 10:28Speaker 5: a certain time, and I would like sneak out of
- 10:30Speaker 5: my room four thirty in the morning, and I'm like
- 10:33Speaker 5: trying to like creep on the wall so no one
- 10:35Speaker 5: would see me. And I would go and like work
- 10:37Speaker 5: out from like probably like probably get there a four
- 10:39Speaker 5: forty five work out till about six and then at
- 10:42Speaker 5: or like five point thirty and then come back, take
- 10:45Speaker 5: quick shower, and be in formation by like five forty.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Five because it was military institute.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Yeah. And then when when I went to New Mexico State,
- 10:53Speaker 5: it was like, oh my god, this is heaven, you know.
- 10:56Speaker 5: And obviously, you know, they had a really actually a
- 11:00Speaker 5: really good weight room there, but there was like no indoor,
- 11:04Speaker 5: no grass filled. And then I come to Vanderbilt and
- 11:08Speaker 5: I'm like They're serving steak every single day, chicken every
- 11:13Speaker 5: single day. I'm like, what, like what's going on?
- 11:16Speaker 2: You know, the nutrition is a big difference, oh, the
- 11:18Speaker 2: biggest difference for sure, And so you can get whatever
- 11:21Speaker 2: food you want whenever.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Yeah, shrimp. There's sometimes lobsters.
- 11:25Speaker 2: That's what I was crazy.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Yeah, no, and then the desserts are great too.
- 11:31Speaker 2: So they just have like chefs, cooks, always cooking food.
- 11:35Speaker 5: What about snacks, Oh, dude, they have like a thing
- 11:39Speaker 5: from this wall to this wolf filled with what's your
- 11:42Speaker 5: favorite snack?
- 11:43Speaker 2: I mean, I love a lot of fruits. I love
- 11:46Speaker 2: a lot of cookies, So I'm a big fruit and
- 11:47Speaker 2: cookies probably.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Yeah, they got that. Yeah, they got gushers. What's those
- 11:55Speaker 5: climb bars.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Or something, and those are any time one in the morning,
- 11:59Speaker 2: eight in the morning.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Eight.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah, all day, dude, they wouldn't have anything left. We
- 12:03Speaker 2: were there, dude, I know, we can't even have a
- 12:04Speaker 2: break room.
- 12:05Speaker 5: Oh you should have saw my sister. So my sister
- 12:07Speaker 5: came down. Well, we took it into Mexico State. Obviously
- 12:10Speaker 5: there was like just bagels and stuff. We go over here.
- 12:13Speaker 5: She asked for a bag and she's like walking around
- 12:16Speaker 5: making sure no one looks, just like putting snacks in
- 12:18Speaker 5: the bag.
- 12:19Speaker 2: We went to Auburn and worked out with the basketball team,
- 12:21Speaker 2: that's what we did, and we walked. We got They
- 12:23Speaker 2: had like a trail mix with Eminem's that's the whole Yeah,
- 12:26Speaker 2: so we took we were like putting them in our bag.
- 12:29Speaker 2: So like I understand what your sister was doing. Yeah.
- 12:31Speaker 5: Yeah, the stuff's expensive too.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Anything is awesome.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I remember I asked for like a protein
- 12:37Speaker 5: shake and they took me to the back and uh
- 12:40Speaker 5: there was like stack to the top with it was costco,
- 12:43Speaker 5: you know. And I remember I took like a protein
- 12:47Speaker 5: box just home, and I was like, I'm the man.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I wouldn't tel the same way.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 2: What was your greatest high school game?
- 12:56Speaker 5: Oh? Shoot, So junior junior year, I had to actually
- 13:01Speaker 5: play JV because of the transfer rule, and I would
- 13:05Speaker 5: say I probably had maybe six touchdowns in the half
- 13:10Speaker 5: and then like I just sat off like the rest
- 13:12Speaker 5: of the day.
- 13:13Speaker 2: So they made you had to play JV and then
- 13:14Speaker 2: you just dominated. Yeah that's awesome.
- 13:17Speaker 5: Yeah I played. Uh freshman, I played varsity. Uh, sophomore year,
- 13:22Speaker 5: I played varsity, and then my junior year I transferred
- 13:26Speaker 5: and uh they made me sit down and play JV.
- 13:28Speaker 2: The whole year.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:30Speaker 2: The whole year was that boring?
- 13:32Speaker 5: Oh it was bad, you know, Like it was there
- 13:35Speaker 5: was like a crazy play. I was playing running back receiver.
- 13:39Speaker 5: I was just I just like told me, hey, just
- 13:40Speaker 5: throw me the ball real quick. And like we had
- 13:43Speaker 5: this other kid who played quarterback too, and if they
- 13:47Speaker 5: drew up the route for him, I'll be like, hey, switch,
- 13:49Speaker 5: you play quarterback real quick and I would run the route.
- 13:54Speaker 5: And so I would I would run the route. But
- 13:55Speaker 5: there was one time like I took, I took a
- 13:57Speaker 5: hand off and then running up the left side, I
- 13:59Speaker 5: curve it back to midway and then like some kid
- 14:02Speaker 5: facemasks me, I'd come back and score a touchdown. And
- 14:06Speaker 5: that was the day. I had like six touchdowns in
- 14:08Speaker 5: a half. And so I just like sat on the
- 14:10Speaker 5: sideline and it got it got really boring. I wish
- 14:12Speaker 5: I was able to play varsity. Maybe that affected why
- 14:14Speaker 5: I didn't get any offers, but I'm also from New Mexico.
- 14:18Speaker 2: You know, how was your senior year? Then?
- 14:21Speaker 5: Oh, I ended up getting hurt the first game and
- 14:23Speaker 5: I had to sit out for like six games. But
- 14:26Speaker 5: we were eleven and one and we lost in the
- 14:29Speaker 5: playoffs like forty nine to fifty six.
- 14:31Speaker 2: So you missed your whole junior year, Well missed it.
- 14:33Speaker 2: You had to play junior varsity, and then you missed
- 14:35Speaker 2: a big part of your senior year because of injury. Yeah,
- 14:37Speaker 2: so is that why you didn't get the offers at
- 14:39Speaker 2: least any Division one offers?
- 14:42Speaker 5: No, I felt like because towards the end, I was
- 14:45Speaker 5: still playing football and I was still playing really good.
- 14:47Speaker 2: But were you playing quarterback?
- 14:48Speaker 5: Yeah? And no, I don't think just no one wanted
- 14:51Speaker 5: a five ten, five eleven quarterback. They didn't believe in me.
- 14:56Speaker 2: So why did you choose to go to what did you?
- 14:59Speaker 5: How did you what do you call in New Mexico Military?
- 15:00Speaker 7: Now?
- 15:02Speaker 2: Why did you choose nim Oh?
- 15:03Speaker 5: My brother chose it for me. Really, I was thinking
- 15:06Speaker 5: about maybe walking on to like a powerhouse, maybe like Oklahoma.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Obviously Baker Mayfield was a walk on Yeah, Oklahoma exactly.
- 15:15Speaker 5: And so I was thinking of doing like maybe one
- 15:17Speaker 5: of those. And it was like literally a week before
- 15:23Speaker 5: and then the Nimmy offensive coordinator, coach Kaiser came into
- 15:27Speaker 5: my school and was like, Hey, you need to come
- 15:29Speaker 5: to NIMI, Like this is it'll work out well for you.
- 15:34Speaker 5: We've had five Division one quarterbacks in three years. It'll
- 15:37Speaker 5: be great, Like you'll have a great opportunity. So we
- 15:40Speaker 5: kind of and that was when that Netflix show, Uh,
- 15:43Speaker 5: Last Chance You came out, and so Juco was big
- 15:46Speaker 5: at the time, and everyone was taking looks at it.
- 15:48Speaker 5: So I was thinking, just all right, I'm gonna go
- 15:50Speaker 5: Juco for a year and then I'll transfer D one.
- 15:53Speaker 5: And then so when Juco went UH six and four
- 15:59Speaker 5: and then and we went to UH. The next year
- 16:02Speaker 5: we went to the national CHAMPIONSHI won the national Championship,
- 16:04Speaker 5: and then that's how I ended up in Mexico State.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Did you start to get other offers other than New
- 16:08Speaker 2: Mexico State like Jeff oh I had.
- 16:11Speaker 5: I'll tell you when the offers came in, so I switched.
- 16:13Speaker 5: My Twitter has all the offers like that's how you
- 16:16Speaker 5: get offered nowadays. And on my Twitter I said I'm
- 16:19Speaker 5: from Albuaque, New Mexico. I changed it to Tampa, Florida.
- 16:23Speaker 5: And then once I changed it, literally a week after,
- 16:25Speaker 5: I started getting offers and started talking to schools. It
- 16:28Speaker 5: was crazy.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Because you said, you're a Florida player, and they just
- 16:32Speaker 2: respected the Florida players more.
- 16:34Speaker 5: I guess that's how it works, you know.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Are you sure they just didn't get put onto you.
- 16:38Speaker 5: The same time. I don't switch it, Hey, I don't know.
- 16:40Speaker 5: But once I switched it. It was like, oh, now
- 16:42Speaker 5: these coaches want to talk to me. You know you're
- 16:44Speaker 5: a three star. No, I was a no star.
- 16:46Speaker 2: You're a no star.
- 16:47Speaker 5: I was a negative star.
- 16:48Speaker 2: What sports did you play?
- 16:49Speaker 5: I wrestled and played football.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Or a negative star?
- 16:52Speaker 5: Okay, so they have your ranked as you wrestled, wrestled,
- 17:00Speaker 5: I played football and then I played baseball for two years.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Which sport were you the best at?
- 17:05Speaker 5: People thought I was the best at wrestling, but I
- 17:08Speaker 5: believe that I just loved football so much.
- 17:10Speaker 2: He loved football more?
- 17:11Speaker 5: Yeah, way more.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Could you have wrestled in college?
- 17:13Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 17:14Speaker 2: Could you play baseball in college.
- 17:17Speaker 5: If I would have worked at it?
- 17:19Speaker 2: Uh?
- 17:20Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 17:21Speaker 2: What coaches had the most impact on your career? Jerry
- 17:25Speaker 2: kol Why what's special at him?
- 17:28Speaker 4: Oh?
- 17:28Speaker 5: He's hard, had lunch pill. He's just different, Like you
- 17:30Speaker 5: just talked to him, and he just realizes that you
- 17:33Speaker 5: realize that he would never like he's never lied to me.
- 17:36Speaker 5: Even at New Mexico State, I was going through a
- 17:38Speaker 5: bad time because I wasn't in the starting lineup. We
- 17:40Speaker 5: were one and five and it just sucked being one
- 17:43Speaker 5: of five, Like losing just is just terrible. And I
- 17:45Speaker 5: was like, hey, like I want to help the team.
- 17:47Speaker 5: I want to come back. I want to go to
- 17:48Speaker 5: a bowl game, Like, how can I step on the
- 17:49Speaker 5: field again? And he told me, just you know, stop
- 17:52Speaker 5: turning the ball over. Get better in my reads. And literally,
- 17:57Speaker 5: once I stopped turning the ball over and got better
- 17:58Speaker 5: my reads, he put me back in the start line.
- 18:00Speaker 5: And it's like he told the people there, hey, play
- 18:04Speaker 5: this kid, you know, just let him be, just let
- 18:06Speaker 5: him play. And so once that happened, he gave me
- 18:08Speaker 5: another chance. It was best off to the moon. But
- 18:11Speaker 5: I respect coach Kill because he's never lied to me.
- 18:14Speaker 2: There have been times where if I were playing a
- 18:16Speaker 2: like a celebrity golf tournament, we're playing a big course
- 18:17Speaker 2: that I can play as a video game, I'll get
- 18:19Speaker 2: on and play the video game, or I have a
- 18:21Speaker 2: simulator in my house, or I get on and look
- 18:22Speaker 2: at the course. Yeah, do you get on? Can you
- 18:25Speaker 2: get on college football? Or do you have that that
- 18:27Speaker 2: like that? Jayde Daniels was famous for even doing stuff
- 18:29Speaker 2: in the simulator. Do you have any do you have
- 18:30Speaker 2: the ability to do that at all? Like look ahead?
- 18:32Speaker 5: Oh well, we watch film, like uh so say we
- 18:36Speaker 5: play Kentucky, We watch film already in the Kentucky stadium,
- 18:39Speaker 5: but you don't realize what it is until you actually
- 18:42Speaker 5: play in that environment.
- 18:44Speaker 2: What do you mean in the stadium?
- 18:46Speaker 5: Like once, once you're in it, once you're there. Like
- 18:49Speaker 5: sometimes like Auburn's debt perception is kind of different than
- 18:53Speaker 5: Kentucky's because it just like goes up higher and stuff
- 18:56Speaker 5: on the on the walls, but.
- 18:59Speaker 2: So I don't know what you're saying on the walls, like.
- 19:01Speaker 5: Like like they don't.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Did they digitally put a room around you?
- 19:05Speaker 5: No? No, no, no, Like this is like when you step
- 19:07Speaker 5: into the arena. Okay, in real life, real this is
- 19:10Speaker 5: real life. Okay, yeah, got it. Auburn holds like one
- 19:12Speaker 5: hundred and four thousand, Kentucky doesn't hold as much. Sure
- 19:15Speaker 5: how much they hold, but it's like a whole extra
- 19:17Speaker 5: layer you know, that goes up, so like the depth
- 19:19Speaker 5: perception is a little bit off.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Could you play college football twenty six though, and diagnose
- 19:24Speaker 2: like look at coverage as they're putting in and go, okay,
- 19:26Speaker 2: what would I do here? What would I do there?
- 19:28Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 19:28Speaker 2: Have you played with yourself?
- 19:30Speaker 5: I've only got to play once and that was at
- 19:32Speaker 5: the media days.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Can you call every defense. Though, Even even if you're
- 19:36Speaker 2: not good with your fingers on the sticks, could you
- 19:39Speaker 2: go okay, they're gonna blut safety, They're you know, go
- 19:41Speaker 2: to obviously, so we'll look at the hook here.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Yeah. I always do that, But sometimes it's the video
- 19:47Speaker 5: game is different than real life, and so that's why
- 19:50Speaker 5: sometimes it's kind of cracked. But I also like to
- 19:53Speaker 5: mess around on the video game. Just throw one on
- 19:54Speaker 5: one jump balls to Eli.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Well, that's what you guys are doing in JV chunk balls.
- 20:01Speaker 5: I try to get him to widen me out how
- 20:02Speaker 5: Cam Newton did at Auburn, But Eli's like man I
- 20:07Speaker 5: throwing a jump ball to No. Five time Mexican.
- 20:11Speaker 2: What quarterback do you watch or did you watch as
- 20:14Speaker 2: a kid that inspired you?
- 20:15Speaker 5: Johnny Manziel He was cold. He's a That guy is
- 20:20Speaker 5: just a different athlete.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Has he reached out to you at all?
- 20:23Speaker 4: Oh?
- 20:23Speaker 5: I we talked a few times. He's a real cool dude.
- 20:28Speaker 5: He's just when I watch his tape two, he's just
- 20:32Speaker 5: he's wired different. That's what I really like about him.
- 20:34Speaker 2: What do you do right after a game for your body? Oh?
- 20:38Speaker 5: Shoot, I usually just relax. Let me think that's a
- 20:44Speaker 5: good question.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Do you ever get in that like that the chamber
- 20:47Speaker 2: of the cold thing that the cryo.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Or the chiro therapy. No, we don't have one of
- 20:51Speaker 5: those at Vanderbilt. I probably I just go in the
- 20:53Speaker 5: next day. They have treatment, like at eight in the morning.
- 20:55Speaker 5: So I always go into there and just I'm big
- 20:58Speaker 5: on my legs, just making sure those are healthy because
- 21:01Speaker 5: my arm's always gonna come with it.
- 21:03Speaker 2: After the season. NFL aspissions for sure.
- 21:07Speaker 5: I mean they can't tell the highs and winner that
- 21:09Speaker 5: he can't get drafted.
- 21:09Speaker 2: You know they can't. And it's also you know there
- 21:13Speaker 2: have been other five, ten, five eleven.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Quarterbacks right that have gotten drafted and have played well exactly, Yeah,
- 21:20Speaker 5: I haven't. I had. I actually know more quarterbacks over
- 21:24Speaker 5: six foot one who have played I guess less not
- 21:30Speaker 5: as good than people under six foot.
- 21:34Speaker 2: With coach Lee being such a defensive guy, do you
- 21:36Speaker 2: spend much time with him?
- 21:37Speaker 3: Oh?
- 21:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I asked him a lot of questions about the defense.
- 21:40Speaker 5: He's like thinking about different types of ways, Like we
- 21:43Speaker 5: see NFL coverages all day and like they'll get to
- 21:48Speaker 5: a cover two doing some weird stuff and it's like, bro,
- 21:52Speaker 5: how are you doing that? That's not even a true cover.
- 21:53Speaker 5: He looks like Cover three, you know, but that stuff
- 21:57Speaker 5: is just way different, just a lot of third, third
- 22:00Speaker 5: and long stuff that they get to Eddie have final question.
- 22:02Speaker 8: Oh man, it's just awesome having you here. I mean,
- 22:04Speaker 8: my favorite was watching you in New Mexico because that
- 22:07Speaker 8: was like late for us, right, you know, so like
- 22:10Speaker 8: after I'd lost all my bets of the day in
- 22:12Speaker 8: New Mexico.
- 22:14Speaker 2: So dude, it's really cool avening here. That's funny because
- 22:17Speaker 2: those are the games we watch after Central time Zone,
- 22:19Speaker 2: after all of our games Eastern and Central Go, we're
- 22:22Speaker 2: watching like Oregon State, New Mexico. Yeah, you guys been
- 22:25Speaker 2: playing later so we can watch those games later.
- 22:27Speaker 5: I remember at New Mexico State we were like ninety
- 22:30Speaker 5: three against a spread or something like that.
- 22:32Speaker 2: That's pret Eddie. You should know that. Yeah, that's why
- 22:35Speaker 2: he's watching diego. Good to see you. Man, really appreciate that.
- 22:38Speaker 5: I appreciate you guys having.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Now let's get over to Minnesota head football coach PJ. Fleck.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Coach Fleck has been leading to Go First since twenty seventeen.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Known for his high energy and row the boat phrase,
- 22:53Speaker 2: coach holds the school record for most ball wins his
- 22:55Speaker 2: head coach with six, and he hopes to extend that
- 22:57Speaker 2: this week when they play New Mexico in the two
- 23:00Speaker 2: only twenty five Rate Bowl. Good luck to coach and
- 23:02Speaker 2: his team here he is coach PJ Flack, What up?
- 23:05Speaker 2: Coach Hobby Bones?
- 23:07Speaker 3: What's up? Man?
- 23:08Speaker 2: There's a lot of things that I do now in
- 23:10Speaker 2: the different jobs that I have where I can use AI.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Is Have we got to the point now where you
- 23:14Speaker 2: can just like stick other teams in AI to see
- 23:16Speaker 2: what their what their tendencies are through a computer program?
- 23:19Speaker 5: You can.
- 23:20Speaker 7: I think that we have been doing that for years.
- 23:23Speaker 7: We've been doing that in a very different way though.
- 23:25Speaker 7: The analytics have been around for a while, but AI's
- 23:28Speaker 7: taking it to a completely different level in my opinion.
- 23:31Speaker 7: But there's still a human element of football. Remember, our
- 23:34Speaker 7: product is people. Apple's product is the iPhone, the iPad,
- 23:39Speaker 7: the earbuds, and you know, like that's the product. When
- 23:43Speaker 7: you're dealing in a world where the product is eighteen
- 23:45Speaker 7: to twenty two year olds, there's still a sense of
- 23:48Speaker 7: the human part of it. So yes, like going forward
- 23:52Speaker 7: on fourth and one and having analytics on this and
- 23:54Speaker 7: that and what's the book say on this, and what's
- 23:56Speaker 7: the AI say on that? Which is fine if it
- 23:59Speaker 7: was all robots going out there and playing. Uh, these
- 24:02Speaker 7: are human beings, so there's still that human element. There's injuries.
- 24:06Speaker 7: What does your team really do well? What do they
- 24:08Speaker 7: not do well? The type of opponent you're playing, what
- 24:11Speaker 7: injuries do they have?
- 24:13Speaker 4: That mean?
- 24:14Speaker 7: It's crazy. It is the most unpredictable sport I think
- 24:18Speaker 7: in the entire world.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Have you been to a concert lately at all? Coach?
- 24:21Speaker 7: Yes, love concerts, love concerts.
- 24:24Speaker 2: What'd you go to?
- 24:26Speaker 7: Well, we've been to a few concerts. We went to UH.
- 24:29Speaker 7: We took the staff last year to Bruce Springsteen. I'm
- 24:33Speaker 7: a big fan of Bruce.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Uh.
- 24:35Speaker 7: We went to UH. We went to a small concert
- 24:37Speaker 7: for the TV one F Foundation, which is a great
- 24:40Speaker 7: friend of ours. She's a she's a teenage girl has
- 24:43Speaker 7: cancer and unfortunately's got it for the third time. But
- 24:45Speaker 7: she had like Graham Barham in and got to spend
- 24:48Speaker 7: some time around Grand Barham, who I thought was absolutely awesome. Uh,
- 24:51Speaker 7: you know, having that that oil Money song. And I'm
- 24:54Speaker 7: a big country music fan of Luke Combs, Riley Green.
- 24:57Speaker 7: I got to see those guys. Oh gosh, last one
- 25:02Speaker 7: Kenny Chesney.
- 25:02Speaker 5: In the sphere?
- 25:03Speaker 2: Did you go?
- 25:04Speaker 3: How would I forget?
- 25:04Speaker 1: That?
- 25:05Speaker 4: Unbelievable.
- 25:06Speaker 7: In fact, went to the show, not necessarily with but
- 25:09Speaker 7: met up with Matt Rule, the head coach from Nebraska
- 25:12Speaker 7: UNLV Dan Mullen, the head coach there, and we were
- 25:15Speaker 7: all at the show kind of together. Got to be
- 25:16Speaker 7: around Kenny a little bit. He was so gracious. Matt
- 25:19Speaker 7: Rule's friends with the guy, Dan Mullen's friends with the guy.
- 25:22Speaker 7: I'm not friends with him, so I was starstruck.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Man.
- 25:25Speaker 7: I was like, hey, I met you outside this Malibu
- 25:27Speaker 7: hotel like five years ago ago, and I was like, fangirling, man,
- 25:32Speaker 7: it was crazy.
- 25:33Speaker 2: I know Kenny Brellan overly well. And he invited me
- 25:36Speaker 2: out a couple of times and I didn't go. And
- 25:38Speaker 2: I was like, I've seen Kenny before, but that's Spear show.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Is it pretty special? Just that that venue?
- 25:43Speaker 7: It is the greatest entertainment spectacle I think in the world.
- 25:48Speaker 7: I've seen lay Mis in London, I've done a lot
- 25:51Speaker 7: of like things. What people say, you have to see
- 25:53Speaker 7: this show. I love concerts. I go to a lot
- 25:56Speaker 7: of concerts. By far, the greatest thing I've ever seen.
- 26:00Speaker 7: Immersed in the experience I don't think I've had, and
- 26:03Speaker 7: we were sitting was perfect, but I don't even remember
- 26:06Speaker 7: looking at Kenny Chesney or the stage. Like it's the
- 26:09Speaker 7: only concert I've ever been to where I never looked
- 26:12Speaker 7: at the stage. You're immersed in this feeling and experience
- 26:16Speaker 7: of what Kenny Chesney is all about. The feeling he
- 26:21Speaker 7: wants you to feel.
- 26:22Speaker 4: You feel it.
- 26:24Speaker 7: I mean, it hits your heart, your soul. It's unbelievable.
- 26:27Speaker 7: I mean, I've never been and Heather and I love Vegas,
- 26:30Speaker 7: so it's great, but this fear is unbelievable. And Kenny
- 26:33Speaker 7: put on such a live show.
- 26:34Speaker 2: What an entertainer, all right there he is Coach Flake,
- 26:37Speaker 2: good to see a coach.
- 26:38Speaker 7: Big fan of you, Bobby, Thank you very much for
- 26:39Speaker 7: having us on the show.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Thanks coach. See later, let's change the sport for the
- 26:43Speaker 2: final interview of this episode and our talk with Tennessee
- 26:46Speaker 2: head basketball coach Rick Barnes. Coach Barnes spent a decade
- 26:50Speaker 2: at Tennessee turned them into a consistent contender in college basketball.
- 26:53Speaker 2: He built his name up with the Longhorns, where he
- 26:56Speaker 2: coached Kevin Durant. We talk about that he just signed
- 26:59Speaker 2: a lifetime contract with Tennessee. Here he is coach Rick Barnes,
- 27:04Speaker 2: hey coach. I was doing a little little intel onya.
- 27:06Speaker 2: I don't want to put my person out, but I
- 27:08Speaker 2: have a very close friend that has an sec official
- 27:11Speaker 2: and I said, I want to read you a quote
- 27:12Speaker 2: from him. I said, uh, And this is a very
- 27:15Speaker 2: close friend of mine who will come to the house
- 27:17Speaker 2: here sometimes in Nashville. And it doesn't live here though.
- 27:20Speaker 2: I said, uh, what's up a Rick Barnes. What kind
- 27:23Speaker 2: of guy is he? Because he'll tell me because some
- 27:25Speaker 2: coaches coach he's like, ain't good? He said, tremendous man
- 27:30Speaker 2: on and off the court. And I said, I'm about
- 27:34Speaker 2: to talk with him, and he said, Rick and I
- 27:36Speaker 2: have a great relationship. And so that's from somebody very close.
- 27:40Speaker 2: So now that I know you're a tremendous man, I'm
- 27:42Speaker 2: so excited to talk to you.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Well, I appreciate it. Good to be with you.
- 27:46Speaker 2: I was living in Austin almost the whole time that
- 27:47Speaker 2: you were there and then moved to Tennessee. Basically, when
- 27:50Speaker 2: you moved to Tennessee, some would say you chase me
- 27:53Speaker 2: that's fine. That's fine, coach, you can chase me if
- 27:55Speaker 2: you want. That's it's all good. But what's the real ut?
- 27:58Speaker 6: Well, you know what, when I first got here, I
- 28:01Speaker 6: don't think I bet you for two or three years,
- 28:03Speaker 6: when I would go out and meet and speak, everybody says,
- 28:05Speaker 6: welcome to the real ut. And obviously their line was, hey,
- 28:09Speaker 6: you know what the line was or would not be
- 28:10Speaker 6: at Texas if it wasn't for Tennessee. And uh so
- 28:15Speaker 6: they I got to go with the University of Tennessee.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Whenever you leave a school that's color because you're in
- 28:21Speaker 2: two distinct you went from one very distinct. I mean,
- 28:24Speaker 2: even if it clems in distinct colors of the version
- 28:27Speaker 2: of the color. Do you all your burn orange stuff?
- 28:30Speaker 2: Does it go away like it's there's that fire cell
- 28:33Speaker 2: and then it's all now that the Tennessee orange.
- 28:37Speaker 6: Oh yeah, yeah once I you know, the colors changed.
- 28:41Speaker 6: People that you know that are there, that you were
- 28:43Speaker 6: close to you, I've always said, hey, come get what
- 28:45Speaker 6: you want.
- 28:46Speaker 4: It's all here. Getting ready to get a new wardrobe.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Well ties and everything. Yeah, you gotta think it's not
- 28:51Speaker 2: even just like the stuff with the logos on it
- 28:53Speaker 2: like ties, hats, everything you have, like all things must go.
- 28:56Speaker 2: So you guys at Tennessee have been it's an awesome experience,
- 29:00Speaker 2: Like you guys have a great game day atmosphere. Now
- 29:02Speaker 2: I've been there and I've lost. I'm an Arkansas guy
- 29:04Speaker 2: and you guys pounded us. That's terrible. It's miserable experience.
- 29:07Speaker 2: But I respected how passionate and how loud those fans were.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Do you feel when you came in that you have
- 29:16Speaker 2: amplified the basketball culture there? You and your staff? I
- 29:19Speaker 2: feel that way as outside looking in and where do
- 29:24Speaker 2: you guys, what do you kind of rank you guys
- 29:26Speaker 2: sec wise as far as like arenas well.
- 29:29Speaker 6: You know, I will say this on that every People
- 29:34Speaker 6: tell me all the time just how hard it was
- 29:36Speaker 6: to play in Stokely Athletic Center back when before they
- 29:40Speaker 6: moved into the Foods which is now the food Citing Center.
- 29:44Speaker 6: They our fan base here is incredible. I mean you
- 29:47Speaker 6: think about it. We're the only programs in the country
- 29:50Speaker 6: that sell out, you know, women's softball, baseball, football, and basketball.
- 29:55Speaker 6: And I can.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Tell you this.
- 30:00Speaker 6: We've had people tell us that they think this is
- 30:03Speaker 6: as hard a place play as there anywhere in the country.
- 30:05Speaker 6: I could say the same thing about what you're talking about.
- 30:08Speaker 6: You're an Arkansas fan. Uh, that's that Walton Arena is
- 30:11Speaker 6: a tough place.
- 30:12Speaker 4: To play when that thing's cooking.
- 30:13Speaker 6: Now it is that ceilings blow that that uh that
- 30:16Speaker 6: is we sit around a lot and we talk about
- 30:19Speaker 6: Justin Ganey and I and people have asked me the
- 30:21Speaker 6: question all the time in my lifetime of the hardest arenas,
- 30:24Speaker 6: the loudest arenas to play in. And I've always said
- 30:27Speaker 6: the loudest arena ever in my coaching career was the
- 30:30Speaker 6: old gall the Gallagher Iba Arena before they raised the
- 30:33Speaker 6: roof on it, that thing when we had some incredible
- 30:36Speaker 6: games in there, when Coach Sutton was there, and it
- 30:39Speaker 6: was so definitely you couldn't even hear and if a
- 30:42Speaker 6: person with three inches from your face. Sometimes the old
- 30:46Speaker 6: Rentals College Sam at NC State Colefield House. Obviously, Kansas
- 30:50Speaker 6: still has what they have going, but there are some
- 30:52Speaker 6: places that you that really stood out like that. And
- 30:55Speaker 6: but when I'm coaching a game, I'm kind of oblivious
- 30:57Speaker 6: to all that, to be quite honest. But I have
- 31:01Speaker 6: had a lot of people tell me how hard it
- 31:03Speaker 6: is to come in here.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Employ.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Yeah, Tennessee sucks to play because you guys are so loud.
- 31:08Speaker 2: I'm biased Arkansas Auburn. It's small, but that's it to
- 31:11Speaker 2: Auburn gets loud and because it's so small and right
- 31:14Speaker 2: on top of you. So there's a dynamic there towards
- 31:16Speaker 2: the whole, like nine thousand people but doesn't allow freaking
- 31:18Speaker 2: nine thousand people.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Right, yeah, it is. I mean you know that, does
- 31:21Speaker 4: you know?
- 31:22Speaker 6: I think about you know, Old miss can get going,
- 31:25Speaker 6: you know, I think now you know, obviously a lot
- 31:27Speaker 6: of people have cut their arenas down. You know, you
- 31:29Speaker 6: go out in Texas, now think about it. Baylor wins
- 31:33Speaker 6: the National Championship, goes from a ten thousand seed arena
- 31:36Speaker 6: to like of what the seven thousand and eight thousand
- 31:38Speaker 6: seed arena. Texas goes from a seventeen thousand seed arena
- 31:41Speaker 6: to a ten thousand seed arena. But there's still something
- 31:45Speaker 6: to be said about the arena that you know, twenty one, six, seven, eight,
- 31:49Speaker 6: and especially when.
- 31:51Speaker 4: You fill it up.
- 31:52Speaker 6: But there's a lot of them that can be loud
- 31:55Speaker 6: in some ways, obviously, but they all have their own
- 31:59Speaker 6: really unique personalities.
- 32:01Speaker 2: What about stand in that box. I don't feel like
- 32:03Speaker 2: they give you enough room, and you know, you come
- 32:05Speaker 2: out of the box and give a little warning. You
- 32:06Speaker 2: feel like that box should be extended a little better way.
- 32:09Speaker 6: Well, what I think they ought to do, they ought
- 32:10Speaker 6: to move the officials where I have the worst seat
- 32:13Speaker 6: in the house, where I sit on the bench the
- 32:17Speaker 6: officials but is right in my face the entire game.
- 32:20Speaker 6: His job is just staying at the foul line, and
- 32:22Speaker 6: my seat lines up with the foul line, and so
- 32:26Speaker 6: that makes me have to get up and move. But
- 32:28Speaker 6: sometimes I will literally he said, I'll push them to
- 32:31Speaker 6: the side a little bit.
- 32:32Speaker 4: But that's where they're supposed to be.
- 32:33Speaker 6: But uh, you know, back in the day, you know,
- 32:37Speaker 6: you know, you could walk down as far as I
- 32:38Speaker 6: remember when you could walk to half court. But uh,
- 32:42Speaker 6: you know, again, it just goes back to where they
- 32:44Speaker 6: want to try to feel like they got control of
- 32:46Speaker 6: the game and trying to keep people under control.
- 32:49Speaker 2: When did they hit you though with the tech? Because
- 32:50Speaker 2: I'm assuming they'll say, coach, do they give you like
- 32:53Speaker 2: a quiet warning? First? Allowed warning? Second? Like, at what
- 32:56Speaker 2: level do they go that's too much? We've told you
- 32:58Speaker 2: twice three times already.
- 33:00Speaker 6: Pends on each guy, you know, back earlier. I'll never
- 33:02Speaker 6: forget one night when I was coaching the province in
- 33:04Speaker 6: the Big East, and you know, coaches and referees, you know,
- 33:09Speaker 6: we all I thought we had pretty good relationships. We
- 33:11Speaker 6: knew each other. But Timmy Higgins one night, who I
- 33:15Speaker 6: loved to death and did a lot of games, and
- 33:17Speaker 6: games just started and you know, we weren't playing well,
- 33:20Speaker 6: and I'm getting after him a little bit, and next
- 33:23Speaker 6: thing I know, he comes by me and I said,
- 33:25Speaker 6: I just showed out Timmy and he turned around.
- 33:27Speaker 4: He teed me up. I looked around.
- 33:30Speaker 6: I said what and he looked down and I promise
- 33:33Speaker 6: you my foot was a half an inch out of
- 33:35Speaker 6: the box. He looked at me, he looked down and said,
- 33:37Speaker 6: you're out of the box. And then he turned back
- 33:39Speaker 6: and I said, are you kidding me? He said, Coach,
- 33:41Speaker 6: I had a bad day today. I don't want to
- 33:42Speaker 6: hear it, you know, And.
- 33:45Speaker 4: That you know thing. But you know, I go back.
- 33:48Speaker 6: I think there's guys that referee the game, and there's
- 33:50Speaker 6: guys that managed the game too. And if you asked
- 33:53Speaker 6: me what I'd rather have a guy that manages a
- 33:54Speaker 6: game or referee is a game, I'd probably I just
- 33:57Speaker 6: want referees to call the rules of the game, but
- 33:59Speaker 6: they need to mana is it too And I think
- 34:02Speaker 6: older guys probably are a little bit better at that. Uh,
- 34:05Speaker 6: as it gets experienced.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Do you have a person on your staff that whenever
- 34:09Speaker 2: you have been triggered so much, they go, all right,
- 34:11Speaker 2: coach stop that you actually will listen.
- 34:14Speaker 4: To not really uh, you know, not really.
- 34:18Speaker 6: I mean if when I get if, if I do
- 34:20Speaker 6: get going, I I.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Want to get going. You know, this is really funny.
- 34:25Speaker 6: I think I don't remember the last time I had
- 34:27Speaker 6: tactical I think I think it was here when John
- 34:30Speaker 6: was at Kentucky and he got a technical foul and
- 34:34Speaker 6: I looked at him and I was laughing because he
- 34:36Speaker 6: didn't I didn't think he had done anything. And he
- 34:38Speaker 6: turned around teed me up because because I didn't think,
- 34:43Speaker 6: I'm like, what did he do? And they teat us
- 34:45Speaker 6: both up, And that may be that's one of the
- 34:47Speaker 6: last ones I think I remember.
- 34:48Speaker 4: That I got.
- 34:49Speaker 6: But uh, you know, officials, you know, I think there's
- 34:52Speaker 6: been a lot that has gone into helping the officials
- 34:55Speaker 6: to learn how to communicate. That's the key between games
- 35:00Speaker 6: with coaches and referees and the communication level. And obviously
- 35:04Speaker 6: some coaches are going to get along better with others
- 35:06Speaker 6: and vice versa.
- 35:07Speaker 4: But it's a communication factor.
- 35:10Speaker 6: That has been You know Mike Keys, who is our
- 35:14Speaker 6: supervisor of official, he has done just an incredible job.
- 35:17Speaker 6: Incredible and I will tell you this, I really do
- 35:20Speaker 6: respect those officials. I was on the rules committee for
- 35:23Speaker 6: five years and knowing and learning how hard they work
- 35:29Speaker 6: at it, have to work at it, and it's a
- 35:31Speaker 6: really difficult game to officiate. Uh, that gave me a
- 35:35Speaker 6: whole different perspective. But it also helped me because I
- 35:40Speaker 6: can I know where they're supposed to be.
- 35:43Speaker 4: They're not there.
- 35:43Speaker 6: I can kind of get at it a little bit.
- 35:45Speaker 6: But they work at it and they want to get
- 35:48Speaker 6: it right. That's all I'm going to tell you. They
- 35:50Speaker 6: do want to get it right.
- 35:51Speaker 4: It's important to them.
- 35:52Speaker 6: And back in the day, everybody used to feel like
- 35:55Speaker 6: there's a part time job for those guys.
- 35:57Speaker 4: It really isn't.
- 35:58Speaker 6: Those guys you know that money if they might have
- 36:01Speaker 6: another job, and it feels important to them to help
- 36:04Speaker 6: take care of their families. And I think you got
- 36:06Speaker 6: to respect him because really it's a tough game to officiate.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Beaddi, Hey, Coach.
- 36:12Speaker 8: My first job out of college, I was a news
- 36:16Speaker 8: cameraman for News A and Austin. You were head coach
- 36:19Speaker 8: at Texas and I never did sports really, but they
- 36:21Speaker 8: sent me out to one of your press conferences because
- 36:23Speaker 8: the photographer wasn't available, so I'd go up there and
- 36:25Speaker 8: it's the first time I'd ever seen you in person,
- 36:28Speaker 8: and they had you guys had planned a fart machine
- 36:32Speaker 8: under one of the reporter seats, so every time that
- 36:35Speaker 8: reporter started to ask a question, you guys hit the
- 36:38Speaker 8: button and a fart noise would come out and he
- 36:40Speaker 8: just couldn't get his question out. I thought that was
- 36:43Speaker 8: the funniest thing in the world. I became a huge
- 36:45Speaker 8: fan of yours after that moment. After that, do you
- 36:50Speaker 8: still do that kind of stuff with the media? I
- 36:52Speaker 8: thought that was so great.
- 36:53Speaker 6: Hey, if you want me to get up, I'll walk
- 36:55Speaker 6: in my locker and I'll get that machine.
- 36:58Speaker 5: You remember that, Coach.
- 37:00Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I'm sure I've done worse than that, but
- 37:04Speaker 6: you know, sometimes you just want to have fun doing
- 37:06Speaker 6: what you're doing. And I'm not sure who it was,
- 37:08Speaker 6: but I'm sure it was good reason why we put
- 37:10Speaker 6: it underneath their chair.
- 37:12Speaker 2: That's funny. Okay, final two questions. I'll talk about Kevin
- 37:15Speaker 2: Durant for a second. How cold was he as just
- 37:18Speaker 2: a freshman at Texas?
- 37:20Speaker 4: Man?
- 37:20Speaker 6: Oh man, I could tell you, I could tell you
- 37:22Speaker 6: stories all day about him. I remember, you know, I
- 37:27Speaker 6: tell everyone, when you coach a guy like Kevin Durant,
- 37:31Speaker 6: he's the hardest workers. He's as harder worker, maybe the
- 37:35Speaker 6: hardest worker.
- 37:35Speaker 4: That we've ever coached.
- 37:37Speaker 6: He's just an incredible teammate, very unselfish. All he cared
- 37:41Speaker 6: about was winning. But you know, he just loves being
- 37:44Speaker 6: in the gym.
- 37:45Speaker 4: And he still does even today.
- 37:46Speaker 6: I mean, I mean he works as hard as now
- 37:50Speaker 6: or harder. I mean, he just loves the game of basketball.
- 37:53Speaker 6: And so when you coach a guy.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Like Kevin, and you know, he came in and.
- 37:58Speaker 6: We had lost three guys early to the NBA Draft
- 38:02Speaker 6: and Daniel Gibson, PJ. Tucker and LaMarcus Aldridge, and we
- 38:06Speaker 6: were down to three players in our program, and we
- 38:09Speaker 6: signed best recruiting class in the country. We had, you know,
- 38:12Speaker 6: Kevin and DJ Augustine, Damien James, and we signed seven
- 38:16Speaker 6: freshmen and four I'm started, but Franfretchell had called me
- 38:20Speaker 6: in September. He was doing getting ready for the season.
- 38:23Speaker 6: He says, what do you think about your team? I said, well,
- 38:25Speaker 6: we're going to start for freshmen and a sophomore and
- 38:29Speaker 6: or junior, and I don't know how good our team is,
- 38:32Speaker 6: but I've got the best player in the country. He said,
- 38:34Speaker 6: you mean you got the best freshman. I said, no,
- 38:35Speaker 6: I got the best player in the country. I said,
- 38:38Speaker 6: he is the very best player in the country. And
- 38:40Speaker 6: he became the first freshman to win the national uh all,
- 38:45Speaker 6: you know, I think seven National Player of the Year awards.
- 38:48Speaker 6: But he had an incredible game where he kind of
- 38:50Speaker 6: broke out. We were playing against coach Knight at Texas
- 38:53Speaker 6: Tech and is one of those nights where I think
- 38:55Speaker 6: he had thirty some points, you know, maybe twenty rebounds
- 38:59Speaker 6: and almost triple double. And game after that, we came
- 39:04Speaker 6: back a couple of weeks later and Kevin had We
- 39:08Speaker 6: went out there and he got rolleding in he was cooking,
- 39:12Speaker 6: he was.
- 39:12Speaker 4: Rolling and playing at just an incredible level.
- 39:15Speaker 6: And Texas Tech comes back and right before the game,
- 39:18Speaker 6: you know, five minutes before the game, you know you're
- 39:19Speaker 6: supposed to put your starting line up in and we
- 39:21Speaker 6: had prepared for Texas Tech to come in, and next
- 39:24Speaker 6: thing I know, they come in. It's a tax changer
- 39:26Speaker 6: line up. They're starting to walk on and I'm like,
- 39:29Speaker 6: what in the world I'm looking there, and I started thinking,
- 39:32Speaker 6: you know what they're doing. Another good player in the league,
- 39:36Speaker 6: Martin Zeno, was a really good one on one player,
- 39:39Speaker 6: And I said, by the way they're starting, and Kevin's
- 39:41Speaker 6: going to have to match up with him. And so
- 39:43Speaker 6: Coach Knight's gonna go at Kevin with Zeno, He's gonna
- 39:45Speaker 6: make kitting. And so I told Kevin, I said, look,
- 39:48Speaker 6: whatever you do, you don't even leave the lane. You
- 39:51Speaker 6: just stand in front of the basket. And we jumped
- 39:53Speaker 6: on those guys and we were up probably like something
- 39:56Speaker 6: like thirty to five, and all at once, I hear
- 40:00Speaker 6: somebody stomping her foot and I look around and coach
- 40:02Speaker 6: nice looking down there. He looks at me and he
- 40:04Speaker 6: calls me a name and starts laughing at me. And
- 40:07Speaker 6: we're up at halftime by thirty points. The second half,
- 40:10Speaker 6: it took thirty seconds, thirty minutes to get the entire
- 40:12Speaker 6: at half over. He went zoned and I'd never seen
- 40:15Speaker 6: him go z and after the game he told me
- 40:18Speaker 6: it's him. At halftime, he said, if anybody fouls, we're
- 40:20Speaker 6: going to get into two three zone. If anybody fouls,
- 40:23Speaker 6: you're going to walk back to Lubvick.
- 40:24Speaker 4: I want to be out of here.
- 40:26Speaker 6: And that game was that half was over in thirty minutes,
- 40:29Speaker 6: but Kevin put on and then I can just remember
- 40:33Speaker 6: some of the things he did. One of my favorite
- 40:35Speaker 6: stories is we go to Kansas and place as you
- 40:40Speaker 6: know is gone and we start that game and Kevin Durant,
- 40:44Speaker 6: I'm telling you it's one of the greatest twenty minutes
- 40:47Speaker 6: in entire college basketball history. And Danny Manning told me
- 40:51Speaker 6: later he was on the bench with Bill and I mean,
- 40:55Speaker 6: we were running a play that we couldn't guard. When
- 40:58Speaker 6: Carmelolo Anthony beat us in the final force just and
- 41:00Speaker 6: simple isolation.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Put it's up to kd Just to pick it apart.
- 41:04Speaker 6: And every gallon court had scored a point because he
- 41:08Speaker 6: neither made the pass or did something. And Danny, they
- 41:12Speaker 6: couldn't stop him. I mean, he was unstoppable. And Danny
- 41:15Speaker 6: told me that Bill looked at him and said, what
- 41:16Speaker 6: do you think? And Danny said, I looked at Bill
- 41:19Speaker 6: and said, Bill, that's a bad mother. But he gave
- 41:23Speaker 6: it to him any and every way you could.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Everybody I know that knows you loves you, and so
- 41:28Speaker 2: it's really nice to talk to you. Thank you all right, Coch,
