- 14:47didn't give up room, room room. Our next book is
- 14:52about a character named Dodsworth and the title is called
- 14:57Dodsworth in New York. It was published by Sam Piper
- 15:02Hooton Mifflin Harcourt. It has a copyright ear of two
- 15:06thousand and seven and the author is Tim Egan. Chapter one, Breakfast.
- 15:14Doddsworth wanted adventure. He wanted to fly in a plane.
- 15:18He wanted to sail on a ship. He wanted to
- 15:21see the world. But first he wanted breakfast. He went
- 15:25to his favorite place, Hodg's Cafe. He loved Hodg's pancakes.
- 15:29Everybody did. They were the best pancakes in the world.
- 15:33Dodge Work walked into the cafe. He was very early,
- 15:39so there was nobody around. Nobody that is, but Hodges Duck.
- 15:43Hodges Duck was crazy morning, said Doddsworth. The duck just
- 15:48stared at him. May I please have some pancakes, asked Doddsworth.
- 15:53The duck turned and jumped onto a stool. The duck
- 15:56started singing, fluffy pancakes in the air and cakes pancakes everywhere.
- 16:02Oh no, said Dodsworth. The duck flew behind the counter.
- 16:07He started throwing pancakes at Dodsworth. Dodsworth tried to catch
- 16:11the pancakes. He caught three out of seven. Hodges ran
- 16:15out from the kitchen. He grabbed the duck. Sorry about that, Doddsworth,
- 16:19He said, you're here, bright and early. Yep, said Dodsworth.
- 16:23I'm going on an adventure where too, asked Hodges. New York, Paris, London.
- 16:30You name it, said Dodsworth. Sounds exciting, said Hodges. The
- 16:35duck said nothing. Dodsworth finished his breakfast. He bid farewell
- 16:40to Hodges. Hodges wished him well. Dodsworth tipped his hat
- 16:44and peddled away. Chapter two. The train. Dodsworth arrived at
- 16:50the train station. He bought a ticket to New York.
- 16:53From there he would sail across the ocean. He was
- 16:57very excited. The train started chugging along over hills and underbridges,
- 17:02through fields and forest. Was the start of a grand adventure.
- 17:07Two hours later, Dodsworth went to open his trunk. As
- 17:10he lifted the lid, the duck jumped out. Finally, said
- 17:14the duck, I could hardly breathe. Dodsworth couldn't believe it.
- 17:18What are you doing here? He shouted, looking for excitement,
- 17:22said the duck. Where are we going? He asked. Doddsworth
- 17:27was not happy. We are not going anywhere, he shouted.
- 17:31I'm going on a venture alone. You are going back
- 17:35on the next train. The duck just looked out the window.
- 17:39This is funny, said Dodsworth went up to the conductor.
- 17:43Can you please stop this train? He asked, Not until
- 17:47New York, said the conductor. Dodsworth was very upset. He
- 17:52marched back to his room. The duck had taken all
- 17:55of Dodsworth's clothes out of the trunk. He was lying
- 17:59on them. This is the life, he said. Doddsworth was
- 18:03very angry. Get off my clothes, he shouted, Look at
- 18:08the mess you made. Whoa said the duck. Calm down there, partner.
- 18:12I will not calm down, shouted Dodsworth. And I am
- 18:16not your partner. Chapter three, New York City. The next morning,
- 18:23the train pulled into New York City. Dodsworth bought a
- 18:26ticket for the duck to go home. He turned to
- 18:29give the duck the ticket. He saw the duck getting
- 18:31on the subway again. Dodsworth was very mad. Fine, he shouted,
- 18:37good luck to you. He started walking to the boat
- 18:39yard Paris. Here I come, he grumbled. He walked for
- 18:45a mile, but then he stopped. He knew how worried
- 18:47Hodges must be. He knew he had to find the duck.
- 18:50All I wanted was a simple little adventure, he said.
- 18:54He walked around New York City all day, across the
- 18:57Brooklyn Bridge, up to Yankee Stadium, and down to Wall Street.
- 19:01There was no sign of the duck, but Dodsworth was
- 19:04amazed at the giant buildings. He head over to Washington Square.
- 19:10There were a lot of ducks, and they all looked
- 19:11the same. A lady was feeding them bread. Only one
- 19:14duck was throwing bread back at the lady. Aha, shouted Doddsworth.
- 19:20He chased the duck down to the Hudson River by,
- 19:23but the duck got away again. Dodsworth sat and watched
- 19:27the boats for a while. He thought he saw the
- 19:29duck on one of the boats. Why would a duck
- 19:33take a boat, he wondered. The boat was going to
- 19:36the Statue of Liberty. Dodsworth took the next boat. He
- 19:40arrived at the statue and climbed to the top. There
- 19:43was no sign of the duck anywhere. There was, however,
- 19:46a great view of the city. That night, Dodsworth checked
- 19:50into a hotel near Central Park. He kept trying to
- 19:54call Hodges on the phone, still no answer. At one
- 19:58point he thought he saw the duck duck in the park,
- 20:01it was too dark to tell for sure. In the morning,
- 20:05he walked to a diner cross from the park. He
- 20:08ordered pancakes. They were not as good as Hodges, not
- 20:12even close. Dodsworth watched as the park came to life.
- 20:16A band started playing music, Folks started flying a kite.
- 20:20A magician began doing trick. I shall now pull a
- 20:24rabbit from my hat, said the magician. He pulled out
- 20:26the duck instead. Aha, screamed Dodsworth. The duck took off.
- 20:31Dodsworth tried to catch the duck all day. He chased
- 20:35him up to Park Avenue. Even though he couldn't find
- 20:37the duck. Dodsworth liked how fancy everyone was dressed. Later,
- 20:42he saw the duck going to the Museum of Modern Art,
- 20:45Dodsworth searched and searched, but he couldn't find the duck
- 20:49anywhere in the museum either. That evening, he spotted the
- 20:53duck walking into Radio City Music Hall. A movie was playing,
- 20:57so it was really dark. Since dot couldn't see the duck,
- 21:01he decided to just enjoy the movie. After a while,
- 21:06somebody started throwing popcorn at the screen. Dodsworth knew who
- 21:10the somebody was. He stood up and saw the duck. Aha,
- 21:14he shouted, sh shouted everybody else. The duck ran out
- 21:19and jumped onto a bus. Dodsworth jumped into a taxi cab.
- 21:24Follow the duck, he said. The taxi followed the duck.
- 21:29The bus went to Coney Island. Dodsworth watched the duck
- 21:32get on the ferris wheel. He waited until just the
- 21:36right second. Gotcha, he said, as he grabbed the duck. Hey,
- 21:40said the duck, how's it going? Chapter four? Going home?
- 21:46Dodsworth brought the duck to the train station. You should
- 21:50be ashamed, said Dodsworth. You worried Hodges, you worry me.
- 21:55You could have been lost forever. Sorry, said the duck.
- 21:58The duck lowered his head. Dodgeworth put his hand on
- 22:02the duck. Oh, it's all right, he said, don't be sad.
- 22:06The duck started snoring. He was found asleep. Dodsworth went
- 22:10to a phone booth. He called Hodges again. Hello, said Hodges.
- 22:16He sounded sad. Hodges shouted Dodsworth. I've got the duck.
- 22:20He's with me. Hodges screamed that crazy duck. I have
- 22:24been worried sick. Sorry, he runs your adventure, said Hodges.
- 22:29Runed it. He was the adventurer, said Dodsworth. They both laughed.
- 22:33We'll head home on the next train, said Dodsworth. Dodsworth
- 22:37went back to the duck, to his great dismay, the
- 22:40duck was gone again. Dodsworth looked out the window. The
- 22:44duck was getting on a boat. Dodsworth ran and jumped
- 22:48on the boat. The boat started sailing away. Hurry, said Dodsworth,
- 22:52Let's swim back to shore. No can do, said the duck.
- 22:56I can't swim, what shouted Dodsworth. You're a duck, sorry,
- 23:01said the duck. Never learn how to swim. The city
- 23:05became farther and farther away. Dodsworth saw that the boat
- 23:09was going to Paris. He went to the phone and
- 23:12called Hodges again. Hey, he said, listen, everything is fine.
- 23:17The duck is still with me. But well, it might
- 23:19be a little longer than we thought. A next story
- 23:24is about a bridge and is called Golden Gate Building
- 23:28The Mighty Bridge. It was published by Chronicle Books. It
- 23:34has a copyright year of twenty twenty four and it
- 23:38was written by Elizabeth Partridge co. Winter winds rattle your
- 23:43window at the blast of the foghorn weaves into your
- 23:46morning dreams, warning ships away from the rocky cliffs behind you. Downstairs,
- 23:52the front door slams shut as Pop comes in from
- 23:55tending the light and foghorn. A truck rumbles by under
- 23:59your window. You leap out of bed. How did you forget?
- 24:03Today's the day work begins on the Golden Gate Bridge.
- 24:07Workers with steel and concrete are squaring off against fog
- 24:10and wind and pounding surf. They want to build the
- 24:14world's longest suspension bridge. People say it's impossible. It's too
- 24:19far to span from land to land across the wild
- 24:22surging waters where the ocean meets the bay. The weather
- 24:26is wicked and blinding, wet fogs and treacherous winds that
- 24:30will toss the workers into the water like paper dolls.
- 24:34Maybe they're right, but here comes the trucks on the
- 24:39steep hills behind you. Dynamite and machines carb a place
- 24:42for the anchorage block. One day it will anchor the
- 24:45strong suspension cables that will hold up the bridge next
- 24:49to you. Excavators bike deep into sand and rock. The
- 24:52machines stick far down into the rock to make a
- 24:55strong foundation pier for the bridge tower. Dump trucks shift
- 25:00into low gear and move out, loaded with dirt and rocks.
- 25:04The four men drops by and Poll makes him a
- 25:06cup of coffee. Mamas attacks pancakes on his plate. It's
- 25:10a mighty big job, Paul says, But you know what
- 25:14he thinks impossible. Barges fight their way across the choppy
- 25:20waters of the bay, loaded with seamen and steep piles
- 25:23of sand and gravel, and the badging plant. It will
- 25:27all be mixed together into concrete. Concrete trucks row from
- 25:31the badging plant to the pier, sending their wet heavy
- 25:34micks sluicing down the tube they call the elephant's trunk.
- 25:39When the sun drops into the Pacific Ocean, huge lights
- 25:42flood the pitch so the work can go on night
- 25:45after night. The truck headlights sweep across your bedroom wall. Hurry,
- 25:49the flickering light seems to say. Thousands of truckloads of
- 25:54concrete fill the hole. Then the pier rises until it
- 25:57is forty four feet above the water. Or barges pull in,
- 26:01loaded with gigantic sections of the still toweer, coated in
- 26:05heavy and red paint to keep away the rest. Time
- 26:09to bring on the still men, bravest of the brave, surefooted,
- 26:12smart and strong. A raising gang of six men shout
- 26:16and whistle, gilding the heavy sections into place. The rivening
- 26:21gang swarms each new section, sending smoke hot rivets down
- 26:26long tubes and hammering them into place. We will finish
- 26:31this story the next time. So this concludes the children's
- 26:35story I are for today. Please join us next time
- 26:38as we will read more stories, fables and fairy tales.
- 26:41Thank you for listening, and please stay tuned for the
- 26:44Lexting Hero Leader on RADIOI
