- 0:00Hello, dear one, and welcome back to Remember Why You Are Here,
- 0:04a podcast for seekers and sensitives where you can relax, receive,
- 0:09reconnect to your own self, and remember the most important thing of all:
- 0:14why you're here.
- 0:25I am Asia Suler Earth intuitive, teacher,
- 0:29author of Mirrors in the Earth, and for this episode today,
- 0:33I wanted to revisit the audio of a video that I
- 0:37made several years ago now called How to Be Free.
- 0:42As I record this,
- 0:44I'm sitting at my desk and I'm watching the snow flurry down
- 0:48outside, on this... what is, right now,
- 0:52late February day.
- 0:54And we are having one of the last snows of the season.
- 0:57We had all the childcare cancellations.
- 1:03Yeah, just a total change of plans today,
- 1:05which is just a theme often in the wintertime.
- 1:09And I have been thinking about this video that I made and the three
- 1:15tips that I share in it of how to feel free,
- 1:18and thinking specifically about how I still use those three things all the
- 1:22time to create a sense of freedom in my life.
- 1:26I remember a mentor of mine saying once that
- 1:31people think the highest octave
- 1:36of spiritual being is love,
- 1:40but actually it's not.
- 1:42That there's a state of being in the realm of spirit that's even higher than
- 1:47love, and it's freedom.
- 1:49And there's something about that that really stuck with me because
- 1:54it's almost like love can always be a part of
- 1:59freedom. It's like freedom includes love,
- 2:03because freedom is this essential aspect of our being,
- 2:07of who we are at our core,
- 2:10and it's such an important thing to be able to
- 2:15feel and access in your life.
- 2:17And it was interesting for me to revisit this episode
- 2:22as I had filmed it before I had had a child,
- 2:27and I had filmed it... I think it was very,
- 2:30very early on in the pandemic, if not right, immediately before it.
- 2:35And so a lot of things changed in my just physical
- 2:40experience of freedom since I recorded it. And yet,
- 2:45I was really blown away by the reality that
- 2:50what I shared is still real and are still my primary
- 2:54tools for creating a sense of freedom when I don't feel free.
- 2:59And one of the things that I have found in life is that no matter what is going
- 3:04on or how hard things feel,
- 3:08if I can access a sense of freedom,
- 3:11then I'm always able to open up to the possibility of healing,
- 3:16the possibility of newness,
- 3:17the possibility of a shift in change or state.
- 3:23So if you're someone who is wanting to feel free in
- 3:28your life right now, wanting to tap into that feeling,
- 3:31then keep listening for a replay
- 3:36of this episode I made years ago.
- 3:39So this is called How to Be Free.
- 3:44One of the greatest feelings on earth is freedom:
- 3:49the feeling that you have, all the space that you need to be yourself,
- 3:53to grow, and be at peace.
- 3:56Many of us experience this sense of freedom as kids,
- 4:00and then the older we get and the more responsibilities we have,
- 4:03we start to feel much less free.
- 4:05Freedom can start being something that we only experience on vacation,
- 4:09or for brief moments in the morning before we start our day.
- 4:14But it doesn't have to be like that.
- 4:16Freedom is our natural state of being.
- 4:19This is why it feels so good when we feel free.
- 4:23Every other being on earth has that sense and that feeling of freedom inside
- 4:28of themselves.
- 4:29This is why it can feel so healing to be in nature or spend time with an animal
- 4:34companion.
- 4:35It's heartening for me to remember that freedom is the natural
- 4:40state of the world and a natural state of being,
- 4:43because it means that for as weighed down as we can feel,
- 4:47that sense of freedom is just a step away.
- 4:51Even though we've "grown up," we still have the ability to
- 4:56be a child in this world. We are the earth's children.
- 5:01And so there are some simple things you can do to feel that freedom again,
- 5:06of being young at heart.
- 5:08The very first thing is to spend unstructured
- 5:12time in nature. Now,
- 5:15many of us like things like hiking or wildcrafting herbs,
- 5:19and that's beautiful,
- 5:20but it tends to be going out in nature with a purpose.
- 5:24It's just another way to have a checklist sometimes.
- 5:28So if you really want to feel free,
- 5:30get yourself out in nature without any plan whatsoever.
- 5:34I like to call this "the medicine of rambling." I am a
- 5:39notorious rambler.
- 5:41It can be hard sometimes for people to hike with me because I get sidetracked.
- 5:45I want to veer off, go off the path,
- 5:49look at a certain tree, sit with a certain rock. But if you think about it,
- 5:53this is how you operated as a kid.
- 5:55You weren't trying to go from point A to point B.
- 5:58You were just trying to experience the world,
- 6:01and you let yourself slow down enough to see the delights that are
- 6:05there.
- 6:07As an adult now one of the things that you can do is schedule this time for
- 6:11yourself to take time in nature. And then once you're there, just let go,
- 6:15explore, see what calls you in.
- 6:18It's amazing how much our sense of time can change when we let
- 6:23go of our agendas. Notice when you're in nature too,
- 6:28how all the other beings feel around you.
- 6:31Literally hug a tree, or put your feet in a cool stream,
- 6:35or hold a rock. What is their sense of freedom?
- 6:39How do they feel about existence?
- 6:42I promise you that there's so much medicine in just tuning into the freedom that
- 6:46is all around you.
- 6:49The second tip to feel free again in your life is to turn off
- 6:53all clocks. So that includes computers and phones,
- 6:58as well as watches. So time as we know it,
- 7:02it's a construct, right? Time is always shifting.
- 7:06The length of the day is shifting.
- 7:08Our experience of a minute can be really different.
- 7:12Think about how long a minute feels when you are doing pushups or holding a
- 7:16plank, versus how long a minute feels when you're scrolling on social media.
- 7:21Totally different, right?
- 7:23So when we take the factor out of being able to see time,
- 7:27we actually unchain ourselves from time.
- 7:30We unchain ourselves from the to-do list,
- 7:32and we instead can just experience reality
- 7:37as our body is perceiving it.
- 7:40So one of my closest friends observes an orthodox Shabbat every single
- 7:45week,
- 7:46and she has really inspired me to try this by starting to turn
- 7:50off my clocks at sundown on one day and leaving them off until sundown the
- 7:55next.
- 7:56I often do this on one of the weekend days when I'm a little bit more free with
- 8:00my time, and I can let go of my work.
- 8:03And it's amazing to see how much my perspective of reality
- 8:08shifts when I don't have a clock to look at to know what time it is.
- 8:13All I can go off is my body's time,
- 8:15my body's rhythms and the rhythms of the world around me.
- 8:19Not only does it make moments so much richer,
- 8:22but it slows me down into this sense of complete spaciousness.
- 8:27So if you're feeling any sense of being constricted by life right now,
- 8:31if you're sensing that you need more freedom,
- 8:34try turning off your clocks for a day,
- 8:37and it can be incredible how much will shift.
- 8:40The last freedom practice is to learn about one wild
- 8:45edible that's growing near you.
- 8:48I think part of why we struggle with feeling freedom is because we live in a
- 8:52capitalistic society, where our time literally means money,
- 8:57and where we need money to take care of our basic needs. That's stressful.
- 9:02That's something that inherently heaps upon us a sense of being
- 9:06constricted.
- 9:08So when you learn something like one wild edible or one medicine that's
- 9:13growing in your garden or growing as a weed in your neighborhood,
- 9:17you start to unchain yourself from the shackles of
- 9:22capitalism and materialism,
- 9:25to see that truly everything we need to survive is
- 9:30here around us.
- 9:32True freedom is knowing that you're taken care of,
- 9:35that you have the space to be yourself,
- 9:37and that the elements that make our life possible don't require
- 9:42us to fit ourselves into a box or deny our
- 9:47body's natural way of functioning or taking pleasure in existence.
- 9:51It's amazing how just finding one herb to interact with-knowing that
- 9:56you can nibble on that herb when you're hungry,
- 9:58or collect it when you need medicine-how that can really help us create this
- 10:03sense of being so free. Human beings are meant to feel free,
- 10:09and the natural world is here to help us remember just how free we truly are.
- 10:15I know when I first started studying herbalism,
- 10:18one of the most incredible side effects was realizing that I am so much
- 10:23more free than I think.
- 10:24And it's been so amazing to see how that sense of freedom has
- 10:29only grown the more I've learned.
- 10:33So if you're interested in deepening your herbal knowledge,
- 10:36definitely check out my online catalog of classes.
- 10:40Each class is a deep dive into a particular topic and the plants that can help
- 10:45support you along the way.
- 10:47Plants are so good at helping us to connect into this essential state of
- 10:52freedom. They know exactly what it means to be free in this world,
- 10:56and they will show you. Once you're on my website,
- 11:00you can also sign up to become a part of the inner circle. Once there,
- 11:04I will send these videos directly to your inbox as well as bi-monthly missives
- 11:09that can help you open the portal to connecting to the world around you and to
- 11:14the nature that surrounds you and your home.
- 11:17And so now I'd love to hear from you.
- 11:20What is it that's helping you feel free right now in your life?
- 11:23I think when we take a moment to share with each other,
- 11:26we can often realize that the freedom that feels so far away is so much closer
- 11:30than we think.
