Today we do the show for the Parmars store studio. If there's not
1:34
a Parmar store near you now, there will be soon. Parmar invites you
1:38
to the state Softball tournament being played later this week Little Creek Park in South

Charleston. Of course, you can watch all the games on the all new
1:44
Metro News TV at Parmer, the official store of the West Virginia SSAC and
1:49
of high school sports in West Virginia. If there's not a Parmar store near
1:52
you now, there will be soon. I think I'm on the road to
1:56
recovery from this cold or allergies of whatever it's been. I'll try to get
2:00
through the show today without nearly choking to death like I almost did yesterday.
2:02
Thank goodness I had Steven al Adams here to get me through it. Yesterday.
2:07
On today's show, the Republican nominee for Secretary of State, he got
2:09
through a tough primary against Doug scaff Brian wood Kin reed. Now he does
2:14
have opposition of the Democratic side. Talking about Chris Warner, he'll be stopping
2:16
by. Brad McIlhenny is also here. We dropped something on this show a
2:22
couple of weeks ago about a mere rumor that several Democrats and Republicans were looking
2:29
looking to enlist perhaps Senator Joe Manchin to run for governor of West Virginia.
2:35
Not exactly how that would happen if it does, but this thing really took
2:38
legs yesterday. We're going to talk to Brad about that. Plus, you
2:43
know, we have interims going on. I think they're going to gabble in
2:46
one body at eleven and one of twelve to death I think, or maybe
2:49
it's twelve and one. Anyway, Brad'll get to that a little bit later
2:53
on and within the last hour if news broke. That's really no surprise here
2:57
that former President Trump has now endorsed Patrick Morrissey for the governorship in Westream.
3:02
Again, no surprise that we're going to talk to Brad about several of those
3:05
things if I have an opportunity. I do want to give you an update
3:08
on Doug scaff Secretary of State candidate from a legislator who was snake bitten literally
3:14
last week. I don't mean to laugh about it, but I talked to
3:15
Doug yesterday and he's still in the hospital. He's still got a long road
3:20
to recovery. I'm gonna give you an update on his condition. Plus the
3:23
investigation continues into this the shooting that took place Sunday afternoon at Shawnee Park,
3:30
or actually not at Shawnee Park, it was actually a couple of blocks away
3:32
on Smooth Avenue and Dunbar. A lot of questions are coming out of that,
3:36
including why is it that so many of the I don't really want to
3:39
call them escape routes, but let's just say the entry ways or exit ways,
3:45
how many of them were locked? And we're going to get into that
3:49
a little bit later on Ac County CHEMISTR. Bensolango is actually going to join
3:52
us to address that. Coming up a little bit later on, so we
3:54
got lots to do. I want to welcome into the show though Deb Rusnak,
3:58
Mister Rusnak just survived i'd a tough primary race for prosecuting Attorney Kanawa County
4:02
and she joins us. Now, Deb, good morning and welcome to the
4:04
show. Good morning, Dave. Thanks for having me. So, I
4:08
guess primary part of it's over now it is all right. I want to
4:12
talk about the campaign because it was contentious, to say the least. Certainly,
4:18
yes, yes it was, but you know, it was a hard
4:23
fought battle. I will congratulate my opponent for her efforts, but I'm ready
4:30
to move forward. I am thankful that the voters chose me, and I'm
4:33
ready to continue to run a good, positive campaign and continue to be a
4:39
good representative for the Kanah County Prosecutor's office. Is there, and again,
4:43
I know that you're kind of taking the high road here, and I applaud
4:46
you for that. But this is alre anything that you want to say about
4:47
the race in general. You know, I kept my race, my campaign
4:51
positive, and I relied on my experience and my record as a tough public
4:57
servant. So I don't think I need to to change that. Now,
5:00
I think I need to continue to move forward, continue to take the high
5:03
road, and continue to be the candidate that Kennall County wants. You know,
5:09
it can be kind of confusing because with these judicial races, a lot
5:12
of them were over in the primary, that was it. But the prosecuting
5:17
attorney is a little bit different because you do have opposition. Now you're not
5:20
done, I mean, you're done with the primary, but you're going to
5:24
have opposition when the voters head of the polls in November. That's true,
5:28
it is a partisan race. While I believe that the job of the prosecutor
5:34
is not something that necessarily is a partisan position, simply because one thing we
5:43
never know about a defendant or a suspect and a crime is what their political
5:46
affiliation is. That's just something that doesn't matter, doesn't affect how we do
5:51
our job at the prosecutor's office. But unfortunately, it is a partisan race.
5:58
And so I will be up a give against the Democratic nominee come November.
6:03
And that gentlemen's name is John Mitchell. We'll be hearing that name a
6:06
lot, and I'll have him on the show and you several times, you
6:09
know, between now and in the election in November. So what does the
6:15
what's the rest of the summer look like for you? Of me? Because
6:16
you know, like I said, with a lot of the more judicial type
6:19
situations, they're done, but you still got a campaign to run. So
6:24
you got through this tough primary. What does the rest of it look like?
6:27
Now? So I've been doing this for about eleven months now. So
6:30
I did this last summer. I'm going to basically do the same thing this
6:32
summer. Get out there, get myself into areas where I am able to
6:39
speak to large numbers of people in Kanawak County, door knocking parades, events
6:46
that I can attend to meet people, and just continue to get my name
6:50
out there, continue to tell people what my mission is and what I would
6:55
like to see happened at the Prosecutor's office. And you talked about a lot
6:58
of this when we had you on on prior to the race debb. But
7:01
maybe if people didn't listen, what is your message? What is it that
7:04
you want to get done now that you've got to the primary, and now
7:08
what is your message to voters as we head into the general election in November.
7:12
You know, again, I am at the prosecutor's office. Now I
7:15
have the ability to be able to see what's happening in the office, where
7:20
the changes need to be made, and how to continue to move the office
7:24
forward, and frankly, how to handle cases and be transparent with the public
7:30
so that people understand not only what we are doing with cases, but why
7:34
we're doing it. I think that's a huge aspect of this job that people
7:41
don't necessarily see, is being able to explain to the public why we do
7:45
things, how we do things, and how the prosecutor's office can continue to
7:50
move forward with cases that are frankly sometimes difficult. As you are out on
7:55
the and again we're talking with Deb Rusnak, who won the Republican primary last
8:00
week with prosecuting attorneys, she'll now move on to the general elections, she
8:03
will have a Democratic opponent in the fault. As you were out on the
8:07
campaign trail, what did you hear from the public, What did people come
8:11
up to you and say, hey, this is my issue with the prosecutor's
8:15
office, or these are things that I think need to be because again,
8:18
just like as I've said this on the show before, just like with any
8:22
other judicial race, whether it's prosecute attorney, magistrate or whatever. Family court
8:26
doesn't matter unless you've been there, unless you've experienced or had dealings. But
8:31
they may not even think about it. But what did you hear from the
8:35
public out there at these forums or when you were door knocking or whatever.
8:39
But what did the public tell you that they wanted to see from the prosecutor's
8:41
office. The public is frustrated that we are continuing to allow people to be
8:46
out on bond and commit crime while they are on bond, And frankly,
8:50
it's not something that we allow, but it does happen certain misdemeanor cases.
8:56
There's a limit on the amount of bond that we can set and a lot
9:01
of people don't know that. They don't understand that, you know, we
9:03
have guidelines that we have to follow, and so they really push for our
9:09
office to revoke bonds on people who commit crime while they are already on a
9:15
bond. That's a huge thing that I hear. They want violent offenders off
9:20
of the streets. Members of the public do not want to walk around the
9:24
streets with people who are likely to harm them, and so that's a huge
9:28
thing that was stressed to me throughout the campaign, and you know, I'm
9:33
really surprised that the number of people who don't understand how the judicial system works
9:39
and don't know that it's open to the public. I invite members of the
9:43
public come to the courthouse see what we do, and I think members of
9:48
the public would be very impressed with some of the work that goes on in
9:52
that courthouse. It's really astounding. Dave Allan Chill and five An Your Life

14:28
Let's welcome into the show now. Republican nominee for Secretary of State. Chris
14:33
Warner, Chris, good morning, and congratulations is welcome to the show.
14:35
Good morning, David, Thank you for having me, Thank you for being
14:37
here. Was a tough fight. I mean, this Secretary of States race,
14:41
you know, that's one of the that's one of the and there's no
14:45
this thing as an unimportant office under the Capitol Dome, but it's one that
14:50
sometimes in some elections past maybe didn't get all the attention, but this one
14:54
certainly did. This one and the AG's race both were pretty contentious races.
15:00
Yeah, those were hard fought races. And by the way, I've got
15:03
to tell you I heard that Doug scaff is still in the hospital. My
15:05
prayers go out to him and his family. I know his kid's got to
15:09
be missing him if he's still in the hospital. And you know, these
15:13
races run you down physically, and that couldn't help to have been run down
15:18
before, you know, receiving the snake bites. So I know he's in
15:22
for a long recovery and our prayers are with him. Let's talk about the
15:28
battle. I mean between you had yourself and you had mister Scaff, and
15:31
you had Brian Wood, and you had Ken Reid. What was it about
15:33
the Chris Warner message that seemed to resonate with voters? You think, you
15:37
know, I think you know, how you get that message out is is
15:41
difficult in most races that that comes down to how many dollars you're able to
15:46
raise from how many contributors. But you know, we had, you know,
15:50
thirty five years of working within the Republican Party and this was a Republican
15:54
Party nomination, So we had lots of friends out there that were sharing messages
15:58
on face Book and that sort of thing. So it's helpful to have that
16:03
kind of support across all fifty five counties. And I think in the end
16:07
that it came down to you friends, sharing messages with friends and communicating the
16:14
message, our conservative message about continuing the work that Secretary of State Mac Warner
16:19
and his staff and all fifty five county clerks have started. We'll talk about
16:25
your brother Mac full disclosure, my former boss. He was concentrating on his
16:29
own race as he came up short in that battle with the Republican nomination for
16:33
governor. Did you talk to Mic on election night? I did. I
16:36
saw Mike on election night. You know, he was along I think sixteen
16:41
months. He gave it everything he had and it didn't turn out. I
16:47
know that he called and spoke with Patrick Morrissey and congratulated him. I know
16:51
they've talked a couple of times since then, and it's all behind Patrick Morrisey
16:56
at this point to make sure that he wins a race in November, as
17:02
it pertains to the Secretary of State's office. Now, of course, Mac
17:04
will will remain Secretary of State until January of next year, when whom whether
17:10
it's yourself or your Democratic opponent, is sworn in in January of next year.
17:17
So Mac want to remain Secretary of State. What has his advice been
17:19
to you about the office or have you even gotten there yet? You know,
17:22
Max suggested that I speak with those working in the office, so the
17:26
deputy Secretaries of State, the staff workers, the people down at the one
17:30
stop shop. We have not had much time at all, you know,
17:36
to talk from you know, if I'm elected in November, and I intend
17:40
to be elected in November, but I'm sure in the next couple of months
17:45
we'll be able to have more time to speak. But he's opened the door
17:49
to speak with staff workers and they have been very helpful, very organized.
17:56
I'm extremely impressed with the Secretary of State's Office staff and the way they work
18:02
with the county clerks. And again I've said it on this show many many
18:06
times before again we're talking to Chris Warner, who's the Republican nominee for Secretary
18:08
of State. I've said this because I have experience having worked there. People
18:12
don't realize everything that the Secretary of State's Office does. I mean, everybody,
18:15
in every facet of life, on your daily existence, you somehow encounter
18:22
something that has to do with the Secretary of State's office, whether it's business
18:25
or whether it's a charity or whatever. I got a I mean one of
18:29
the things that you say they're responsible for, you know, and we all
18:33
know the chief Election Officer and those duties. But it was just pointed out
18:37
to me this morning by one of the staff members in the Secretary of State's
18:40
Office that there were eight, nine hundred and fourteen ballot styles in this election.
18:47
So you look at, you know, one hundred house districts and seventeen
18:51
state Senate districts, and circuit court races and magistrate races. You know,
18:56
you look at all the different races, some city races added in there.
19:00
And when you realize that every precinct is different with various names on that ballot,
19:07
you just realize how much work the county clerks are responsible for, and
19:11
then ultimately the Secretary of State's office, you know, for pulling it all
19:17
together. You know, we're in the middle of canvassing right now, and
19:19
you know, if if everything goes well and there's no challenges to any of
19:26
these races, you might have, you know, this election certified by the
19:30
end of the week, if not early next week. And then to realize
19:34
on top of that, they are only six workers dedicated from the Secretary of
19:37
State's office on elections. You know, the other two thirds of that office
19:42
is focused on business registrations. There is an awful lot for that office and
19:48
staff to stay on top of every single day because you know, the maintenance
19:53
voter maintenance of the voter list. People are going to die every day,
19:57
They're going to be people that move out of state, there's gonna be people
20:00
convicted of felonies. There's just an awful lot of work for them to stay
20:04
on top of it. And of course, as I said, with that
20:07
office, if you're a notary, he goes to the Secretary of State's office.
20:10
If you have an HOA, he goes to the Secretary of State's office.
20:12
Your charitable organization of a certain size goes through the secretary of State's office.
20:18
That's a that's quite a lot of responsibility here, y, the somewhat
20:21
of a collection of a number of loose sinds, including communications for the governor's
20:27
office when legislations passed, and nothing is officially a bill. When the governor
20:32
signs a bill, it's all ceremonial until it goes to the office of the
20:37
Secretary of State. It's just all it's all pictures at that point. That's
20:41
absolutely correct. Talking with Chris Warner again, the day island showing five any
20:45
life bright to you, apart by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston dirty
20:48
Birds. At last, the Dirty Birds have a home game. They're back
20:51

21:02
dollars sodas, and two dollars popcorn schedules, dirty Birds gear promotions and more
21:06
of is a dirty Birds baseball dot com. All right, so it's not
21:10
over yet. You do have opposition in the general in the form of Forton
21:12
Cooper, who's going to be the Democratic nominee. What makes Chris Warner the
21:17
better candidate? I think I'm more in line quite frankly, Dave, with
21:22
most of the West Virginia voters and citizens, just by my conservative nature.
21:30
I think this will be a classic lineup of a very liberal Democrat candidate in
21:37
November and a very conservative candidate and me as the Republican nominee. And I
21:42
urge folks to educate yourself on everything you can via the Internet about each of
21:48
the each of the candidates and making an informed decision come the November general election.
21:55
One of the things before we close on again, you kind of you
21:57
mentioned the word voter maintenance there and the voter roles one of the things that
22:02
Mick wanted to did a Secretary of State. I don't know what the current
22:04
total was, and you probably downy taking four hundred and forty thousand names.
22:10
In the last seven years, four hundred and forty thousand names were taken off
22:12
the voter rolls in the last seven years. And again that sounds like a
22:15
lot, but there's a variety of reasons for that. You know, it's
22:21
people that haven't voted in federal elections. It's people that have moved out of
22:23
state and have not notified their county clerk that they know they moved to Charlotte
22:27
and they didn't think to notify their county clerk to say, take me off
22:30
the voter rolls. So I'm sure that you want to continue. That took
22:34
traffic because it's a big expense to the taxpayers to have these people on the
22:40
voter rolls that aren't actually legal voters. That and it comes down to voter
22:44
confidence, Dave. People need to be able to know when they hear what
22:48
percentage of the voters turned out to vote, that those numbers are accurate.
22:52
They can't be bloated by four hundred and forty thousand names. But you know,
22:56
one thing I know that Mike is very proud of is as well as
23:00
your friend and my friend Lee Dean, is registering new high school voters in
23:06
West Virginia. And I think there've been over two hundred thousand high school seniors
23:11
that have been registered to vote, so at the same time you're removing names
23:15
that aren't eligible, they're making sure that they're eligible voters being added to those
23:18
lists as well. All right, Chris, I appreciate you being here.
23:22
Thanks a lot. Any final words. I know this is the time the
23:26
week after the election, I like to have candidates on to exhale a little
23:30
bit and maybe just to thank people. No. Yeah, and I want
23:33
to thank the more than eight thousand poll workers in West Virginia that voted and
23:38
worked in this election, and thanked the fifty five county clerks for the excellent
23:42
work they did. You know, ten thirty on election night here in Kanall
23:45
County, the office was shutting down down at voter registration and the TV cameras
23:52
were headed home. So they did an excellent job all across the state in
23:56
administering this election. Yeah, because I was here, I was working with
24:02
Chris Lawrence and I were doing election coverage here locally in WCCHS, and I
24:07
presumed it'd be a twelve twelve thirty night before I got out of here because
24:10
we were covering Kanawa County and as you said, we could have probably well,
24:14
christ and Carey stayed all night. Oh sure, but because they had
24:15
to. They have to get things out to the network and everything. But
24:18
I mean, I thought I was going to be here t twelve or twelve
24:22
thirty because of Kanawah County. And that's just because it is the state's largest
24:25
county. It's not a slam on Vera McCormick or anything. They do a
24:27
great job, but it is the largest county in the state, and sometimes
24:30
it's kind of you know, it's a very diverse county and whatever. But
24:33
we were at we were pretty much wrapped up, as you said, by
24:36
ten thirty or so. Yeah. I got a shout out to Vera McCormick,
24:38
the county clerk in Kanawac County. I wanted to vote early. Was
24:41
in and out in less than ten minutes. It was, you know,
24:45
very easy, and they do an excellent job and or the model for the
24:49
rest of the state. All right, Secretary of State nominee on the Republican

30:52
Well, that's what I told That's what I told my producer Ryan. I
30:55
said, you know, we're going to try to get Brad on this morning,
30:56
but he was doing like seven other radio interviews this morning. Man,
31:00
you're a popular guy. So I have cooled my heels on my own count
31:06
for a few minutes to call into shows around the state. And I am
31:10
not sure I am so popular. I mean, there is a special session
31:14
going on, but there is also a radio friendly topic involving Senator Mansion,
31:19
and I think that may be part of the allure of bringing me on some
31:25
shows. Well, yeah, you're right about that. Before I do get
31:27
to that, I do want to mention that if news broke within the last
31:30
hour. So really no surprise here, and I'm not trying to, you
31:33
know, gloss over it, but it's really no surprise that former President Trump
31:37
has endorsed Patrick Morrissey in the race for governor. Really no surprise there.
31:44
I was surprised by the timing. Oh okay, okay, I'll give you
31:45
that. Yeah, you know, I mean the I read into the timing.
31:51
Actually, the primary election was just last week. Trump did not endorse
31:57
among those candidates, did endorse Governor Justice for Senate, but did not endorse
32:05
Patrick Morrissey prior to the primary, ending, did not endorse more Capito at
32:10
the time, did not endorse Chris Miller or Mac Warner. Morrissey came out
32:17
of that with thirty three percent of the vote. He has been making pleas
32:23
and pitches and emphasizing uniting Republicans behind his candidacy. Now, and you know
32:31
a common thread through Republican campaigns in West Virginia, this will shock here is
32:37
alignment with President Trump? What yes? And so I found the timing very
32:44
interesting that this morning former President Trump on Troop Social his own social media platform,
32:52
tells everybody in West Virginia to unite behind Patrick Morrissey, that Patrick Morrisey
32:58
has my complete and total endorsement. In all caps. He will not let
33:01
you down. He will maybe even maybe even more interesting to me, was
33:07
was one of the other lines, not all in caps. Trump said,
33:10
now is the time for all Republicans to unite behind Patrick Morrissey to ensure he
33:16
has a tremendous capital of v victory in November. So the time now is
33:22
the time for all those to unite. So how much of this do you
33:24
think, Brad, with this timing, And that's really something I hadn't thought
33:28
about till you brought it up. The tim into this whole thing, how
33:30
much of this do you think is in response to. I mean something I
33:35
brought up on the show two to three weeks ago about this rumor about Mansion
33:38
getting in, and it really took leg you know, took legs big time
33:42
over the weekend and into yesterday. The story has now gone nationwide that former
33:47
governor current US Senator Joe Manchin is being recruited to somehow get in involved in
33:52
the race for governor, being recruited by Democrats and Republicans. How much is
33:59
that is just coincidence with this endorsement from Trump? What do you think?
34:04
Well, I will admit to you, I don't know. But that was
34:06
another reason I thought, oh, very interesting timing, you know, so
34:10
we met. Our News went ahead with a more traditional news story yesterday about
34:16
sources close to Mansion saying that Republicans had reached out to gauge his interest in
34:24
running against Morrissey, indicating from the Republican side some dissatisfaction with Morrissey as the
34:32
Republican nominee. Within a couple of hours, I had received a statement from
34:40
the state Republican party chairman indicating support for Morrissey. The National Republican Governors Association
34:49
got me on my cell phone and sent me a statement expressing their support for
34:55
Morrissey, and then overnight President Trump comes in on truth Social with an endorsement
35:02
of Morrissey, the highest profile endorsement that are Republican candidate in a very trumpy
35:09
state could expect to get. So. I don't know what is behind the
35:15
scenes at work, but it seemed a little early to me one week out
35:22
from the primary election headed into Novembers general election for that kind of endorsement.
35:29
But I you know, I think it's all part of an effort by Morrissey
35:34
and the supporters to try to generate as much unity in the party as they
35:38
possibly can. Well, I got a couple of texts here that are related
35:42
to what we're talking about. Then I want to talk to talk to you
35:45
about your discussion with Steve Williams, who is the Democratic nominee for governor in
35:50
West Virginia. Do you want to remind you phone calls of Dave Allen Show
35:52
and five eighty Live or a service of big Ley Piggly Whiggley on Spring Street
35:54
and texting services provided by Fruit Pharmacy, your hometown family Pharmacy. One of
35:59
the techs says this mansion return rumor is chicanery by the GOP. They're show
36:06
they're sewing uncertainty and discord among their opponents, says a Texture. Your response
36:13
to that, oh man, I don't know. It's I mean, it's
36:16
messy everywhere. It's it's if if it is true that there are that there
36:22
is a significant Republican outreach for Mansion of all people to get in in opposition
36:30
to Morrissey, well that is not a good look for the age. And
36:35
I mean he did get the thirty three percent that Morsey got means that my
36:39
math is not that great. But what sixty seven percent voted for somebody else
36:45
and it was brutal, But I mean it puts. It does put Steve
36:50
Williams, the Democratic nominee, in an awkward position too. It seems to
36:53
me where you know, he's over getting Williams is over here like pointing hi
36:58
stuff, going hey, hey, I'm still here. I'm still here.
37:00
And you talked to him yesterday and he said, there's no way he's stepping
37:02
aside, No way he's stepping aside. You know, he does not believe
37:08
that Mansion would be interested in pushing him aside to become the Democratic nominee.
37:16
He says they've known each other for four decades. The Mansion gave to him
37:22
in the primary, and he anticipates support, including financial from Mansion going into
37:29
the general And Williams, who was at the Capitol yesterday, says he's here
37:36
to run and run hard, So it puts him in an awkward spot.
37:39
But on the other hand, we're saying his name, which at this point,
37:42
if you're trying to generate statewide name recognition, that aspect of it is
37:46
good for you. I mean knock. Got a couple of texts here related
37:50
to this situation. One text says, Brad the reason Trump endorsed Morrissey today
37:53
is because the Morrissey camp is shaking in their boots at the thought they may
37:58
face Joe Manchin. They asked Trump for the endorsement because they're very afraid.
38:02
Your thoughts, Well, I think they would have asked Trump for an endorsement
38:07
anyway. I would not have been surprised they was expedited next day mail please,
38:17
So I will say that my impression when Metro News got a couple of
38:30
people close to Mansion to describe the outreach that they are seeing, and then
38:37
I took the gist of that to Morrissey's campaign yesterday reached out to those guys,
38:45
and my impression was that they were all hands on deck and responding that
38:51
they actually took at least the story quite seriously. And it was no coincidence
38:59
that I quickly got a response from the state Republican Party chairman, the National
39:05
Republican Governors Association. And I mean, whether the Trump endorsement overnight was directly
39:13
related or not, I do not know. Can't make that claim on any
39:16
solid ground. But again, the timing was interesting. Let me just say
39:21
this too. I was watching one of the broadcast stations here in Charleston,
39:27
and they, like you, they had also caught up with Steve Williams yesterday
39:31
and they were kind of and this is not a knocking as in, but
39:34
they were just kind of, you know, kind of the same, Well,
39:36
it's not going to happen, because Steve Williams said it's not gonna happen.
39:38
But whom we've not heard from here Brad is Joe Manchin. Now,
39:44
I mean it's nine forty six on Tuesday morning. By the time that I
39:47
turn off the microphone, we could have a statement for Mansion saying that there
39:51
is absolutely no truth to this. He hasn't done anything like that, Brad.
39:55
You know, he did get approached Washington right now his job with the
40:00
US Senate, and he got approached by national reporters yesterday, evening several of
40:07
them Politico, Axios others who asked her about the situation. And he's being
40:17
in Washington gives him a certain degree of insulation, and he said, well,
40:22
I don't really know about these rumors. I don't I don't know what's
40:24
going on, So I'll a denial about knowledge of the Republican outreach. But
40:35
these national reporters went on to press Mansion about well, are you interested or
40:39
not? And the impression that these national reporters gave was that he did not
40:46
commit, one way or another to considering at this point running for governor or
40:52
not. Who among us has not witnessed the process of Joe Mansion making a
41:01
political decision. And you know there are phases, oh yeah, you know,
41:07
he in several instances deciding whether to run for governor against Jim Justice in
41:14
twenty twenty, deciding to run for re election to his own Senate seat last
41:21
year, deciding whether to run third party for president. Almost all of last
41:27
year. I mean there's there's a phase of waffling, a phase of out
41:32
and out decision making. Sometimes it manifests as public fretting, and then sometimes
41:39
he backs off, usually of what he has been considering doing. So that
41:45
could be the case here, But it's interesting scuttle but in the meantime interesting
41:50
for all of us, including the national folks, to wonder what is going
41:53
through Joe mansions head. All right, Well, before I let you go,
41:57
I actually did want you to talk about what's going on in the capitol
41:59
down So if you got thirty seconds there is that. So what's what's going
42:06
on over there? So the governor put forth fifteen items for the special session
42:10
agenda it begins Sunday evening. Thirteen of those have been passed. The final
42:16
hang up going into day three of the special session is the appropriate level of
42:22
human services funding, in particular support for families who rely on financial support for
42:30
intellectual and disability intellectual and developmental disabilities for their loved ones, bringing paid staff
42:37
in to help with that support. Everybody wants to make sure that program has
42:45
enough money so that those families get the support they need. But there are
42:50
remaining questions between the House and the Senate about how to properly apply oversight to
42:57
how that money is spent, and that disagreement has put that particular piece of
43:02
legislation into an uncertain position going into day three of the special session. All
43:10
right, Brad, I know you're on top of it, and we'll be

47:15
for more information. Let's go back to Sunday, Beautiful Day, Shawnee Park,
47:17
lots of soccer other sports being played around three when shots rang out on
47:21
Smooth Avenue a couple of blocks away. As you may imagine, Panny consued.
47:23
No one injured. Three men were taken into custody. The shootings were
47:28
not aimed at the kids, or fans or anyone there again two blocks away,
47:30
but understandably parents panic. Many were concerned. Many of the parents of
47:34
those in attendance to social media to say, as people were scurrying to try
47:38
to get out, that they encountered block gates. I've asked County Commissioner Ben
47:42
Selango to come in to address the situation. Ben, good morning. I've
47:45
asked you to come in because, let's face it, you're kind of like,
47:47
mister Shawnee, this saw this thing was kind of like your your whole
47:52
pet project out there, so you're the de facto spokesperson. Shots were fired
47:57
two blocks away. Police investigation said it's an ongoing to instigation. Chief Deputy
48:00
Joe Crawford on the show yesterday to discuss that these kids and those in attendance
48:05
were not in danger, but you can imagine the anxiety from the parents' perspective.
48:08
Yeah, I mean, absolutely it was. It was a it was
48:12
terrifying. I mean, and I've seen some of the video footage and you
48:15
know, the shots were loud. It was two blocks away, but it
48:16
was very loud, and so the people on the baseball side thought there was
48:20
an active shooter. It wasn't on the complex, but they they heard it
48:24
and it was incredibly loud, and you know, you can hear some of
48:28
the videos online. But you know that we do active shooter drills at Shawnee
48:32
every six months. We train. But like Mike Tyson said, everybody has
48:37
a plan to get punched in the face, right, and so we're going
48:39
back now and evaluating all of it. So, so what about the lock
48:43
gates, Yeah, there were two lock gates. I mean so on the
48:46
on the back, so on the soccer side, not on the baseball side,
48:50
but all the way on the soccer side near the pitch, which is
48:52
right outside the swimming pool, there's a locked gate. And then also on
48:58
the other side towards Russian the state, there's a lot gates, so a
49:00
lot of people when the people ran from the baseball side into the soccer side,
49:05
you know, understandably panicked. That forced people over into that corner and
49:12
they couldn't get out. And so what we're going to do, We're looking
49:14
at several different things. You know, there were reasons why some of the
49:17
gates are locked, but we can implement a new system where it's almost like
49:23
like in the school system, where you've got the bar on the door that
49:28
you push and after you go through the door, it locks behind you.
49:30
So that would be a win win for us. So we people would be
49:32
able to get out in an emergency, but then folks from the outside couldn't
49:37
get in. And if we have those bars high enough, we wouldn't have
49:39
you know, three year olds escaping and running out into the road or anything
49:44
like that. So it's a balance. We're going to look at that that's
49:47
something I think we can do fairly quickly. It's something honestly that had not
49:52
occurred to me or our emergency management folks before. And then they're thinking,
49:57
what I do. I'm going to have more escape exits like that emergen see
50:00
exits, because you can run. That's a big facility, So you can
50:04
run hundreds of yards and have no exit, no gate, nothing, And
50:08
so we need to install more of those emergency gates along the along the back
50:14
of the park, even over on the grass side, like towards the railroad
50:17
tracks towards like the back of Westernia State have some additional emergency exits. All
50:23
right, So, I mean I understand the panic on behalf of the parents.
50:27
Sure, but it is important to remember that this happened basically two blocks
50:30
away. But this was how how far was it? Half a mile?
50:34
I mean from the locked gate to the and I don't want to try to
50:37
minimalize it, but you know that it's about it's according to Google Earth,
50:40
it zero point four to four miles. I mean, it's almost a half
50:43
a mile. But they didn't know that. They thought there was a shooter
50:45
in the park. In fact, the first call that I got said there
50:49
was a shooter in the park and this was and even said that there were
50:53
bullets ricocheting off of the bleachers. So you know, one of the things
50:57
that particularly when you're dealing with long uns like Ar's aks, things like that.
51:01
I mean, they're incredibly loud. I was at the shooting range with
51:07
Maya or that morning. They're really loud, and so so you've got to
51:10
make sure so people they echo through and people don't know where the shot is
51:14
coming from. So that's that's understandable. That's why I think there was the
51:20
response. The parents did a great job, the coaches did a great job,
51:24
our staff did everything that they could possibly do, you know, directing
51:29
people out. But there's room for improvement and and we're going to make those
51:34
necessary changes and make I want this facility to be safe. I want everybody
51:37
to feel safe. Uh and and we're gonna we're gonna make some significant improvements.
51:42
All right, give me thirty seconds as we close on your message to
51:45
the parents or grandparents of people that were concerned there. First, I apologize,
51:50
I truly do. I mean I mean that in all sincerity. I
51:52
hate that this happened. I hate that they felt unsafe. I feel I
51:58
know that they're going through a lot, and you know we're gonna make it
52:01
better, all right, Ben, As always, I appreciate you being here.
52:05
I didn't even get a chance to talk to you about the canvassing yesterday.
52:07
Canvassing going with fun. Yes, Varry McCormick did a great job.
52:10
We're good all right now. And now the search is on for a county
52:14
commissioner. That's right, all right, and we'll talk about that next time
52:16
we hear County Commissioner, Ben Selango. I appreciate you being here, appreciate
