- 0:00You have 200 servants working for you right now, and you
- 0:04probably haven't thanked one of them today.
- 0:07There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:10Chad #1170 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:14yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:17you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:19This message is dedicated to Daniel Eck, who has given me one
- 0:23of my favorite servants. You can get a free copy of my
- 0:25book, The Most Powerful Story in the World, by going to from
- 0:29chat.gumroad.com. The transcript of this message
- 0:32and hundreds of others are always available at
- 0:34www.fromchat.com. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:39You may feel like you can do everything yourself, but
- 0:42upgraded thinking knows you're the most served human being who
- 0:45has ever lived. Here's the story.
- 0:49Earl Nightingale used to point to a study, then around 1960,
- 0:52that tried to put a number on it.
- 0:54How many human servants would it take to replicate what the
- 0:57average appliances and an average home were already doing?
- 1:00The answer was 202 hundred people cooking, cleaning,
- 1:05hauling water, tending fires, running messages so that one
- 1:08middle class family could live like it was nothing.
- 1:11That was 1960. You have the equivalent of
- 1:14hundreds of tireless servants working for you right now, and
- 1:18it's only grown since. A smartphone alone multiplies
- 1:21that count many times over. A librarian, a map maker, a
- 1:24translator, a Courier, a calculator, and a newsroom all
- 1:29standing at attention all day, never once asking for a day off.
- 1:33The machines just serve. The only barrier to gratitude is
- 1:37whether we notice. Will Durant had the poetry
- 1:40version of this. He said inventions are organs
- 1:44we've grown outside our own bodies.
- 1:46Gigantic arms that build in a month what once took a million
- 1:50men a lifetime. Great eyes that search out stars
- 1:54no human eye could find. Quiet voices that cross oceans.
- 1:59He said we were chained to the Earth like Prometheus, and we
- 2:03finally got loose. Here's what I want you to sit
- 2:06with. In 1882, JP Morgan strung
- 2:11electric lights through his house and threw a party just to
- 2:14show them off 400 guests came to marvel at it.
- 2:17Two of them went home and ordered the same system for
- 2:19themselves because it seemed like a miracle only a
- 2:22billionaire could afford. That miracle is a light switch
- 2:26your kid flips without looking. Steve Jobs, a billionaire many
- 2:31times over, had no live in servants and no security guards.
- 2:36He left his back door unlocked. Bill Gates couldn't believe it.
- 2:39Jobs didn't need a staff because he had a house full of machines
- 2:43doing what a staff used to do, and none of them had to be paid,
- 2:47fed or thanked to keep showing up tomorrow.
- 2:50That's the whole point. The machine can't be flattered
- 2:54and it can't be wounded. It just shows up and does the
- 2:57work, no thanks required. And that's why we often overlook
- 3:02it. The better story to tell
- 3:04yourself is I'm the most served person alive and today I'm going
- 3:08to notice it. Tell me a story of something
- 3:11you're taking for granted to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:16Send someone a text and ask what is a modern convenience you're
- 3:20thankful for today.
