Latest / Spiders Sound Off / Episode 5: O Canada, Point Guards and Bonus Episode Fallout!
Transcript
- 0:05Hey everybody. Welcome back to Spider.
- 0:07Sound off. This is Tom.
- 0:10And this is Porter. We are doing Episode 5 and we've
- 0:14got a few different topics we're going to focus on today.
- 0:18We'll do some updates some of what's going on in the last
- 0:21couple weeks in Spider World. We'll talk about Porter's trip
- 0:26to Canada and do a little Spider Basketball Canada version and
- 0:32we're going to end with a little debate on who's the best point
- 0:35guard in Spider history. It's.
- 0:37Going to be fun but first time. Before we start, I need to talk
- 0:41to you about the bonus episode that was released earlier this
- 0:47week. I'm sure you got some great
- 0:48feedback for me. Let's hear it.
- 0:49I do have some feedback for you so from many different sources.
- 0:53Here are a couple of the highlights.
- 0:54Disappointing, self indulged and not consistent with the trust
- 1:01you are building with your fans. That's nice.
- 1:04So let me make a point here. This was a bonus episode so we
- 1:08only got 20 minutes out in episode 4 and I gave 5 if you
- 1:14clue the song, 7 minutes of bonus material.
- 1:18I I put the time and energy into creating bonus material.
- 1:23You don't have to listen to bonus material if it ever comes
- 1:26out again. Maybe you, maybe you.
- 1:29Those that think I did something awful can ignore it.
- 1:32But now I need to say that feedback all came from your mom,
- 1:34Tom. Yes.
- 1:35Yeah, yeah, right. But again, we're going from
- 1:38Episode 4 to now, Episode 5. We're back on basketball.
- 1:41Folks, that bonus was just special.
- 1:44And if you haven't heard the bonus yet, you're missing out.
- 1:47It could be one of the greatest stories ever told.
- 1:49It is a story that resonates with you, myself, and the
- 1:53aforementioned D Hall. Yes.
- 1:55So let's talk about what's going on in the Spider verse.
- 2:00We have some news on the Spider forum.
- 2:04Yeah, Spider. Nation.com is back up.
- 2:07A couple of really good technical alumni have recreated
- 2:14the Spider Nation message board. So the Reddit board, which was a
- 2:17nice place to go while we were without a board, I think is now
- 2:22has been consolidated into this new board called Spider Nation
- 2:25dot community dot forum. That's the URL Spider Nation dot
- 2:29community dot forum. And so for your really deep
- 2:34fans, the folks that really go deep in the program, you now
- 2:37have a place to go talk about all things Spider Sports.
- 2:40And if I remember correctly it went to Reddit and that was the
- 2:44what you called the splinter group, is that correct?
- 2:46Yeah, that was that was a misspeak on my.
- 2:49That was a misspeak on my part. It was not a splinter group.
- 2:52It was just a place to go in the meantime until we figured out
- 2:55what the message board strategy was.
- 2:57What's great about the new board is that a volunteer of Spider,
- 3:02alum volunteer basically put all the work into creating a board.
- 3:06Looks just like the old one. There's a women's basketball
- 3:12section. Yeah, they break out the men's
- 3:14basketball board from the women's basketball board from
- 3:17the football and then they have lacrosse, baseball and other
- 3:19sports and it's really well done.
- 3:21I mean, it almost feels like exactly like the board that we
- 3:24we lost when rivals got acquired.
- 3:26So it's it's really good. I mean, there's there's a lot of
- 3:28threads, I mean a lot. You'll get a lot of information
- 3:30out there, you know, because the the people who follow the
- 3:33program the closest are out there all the time posting, so
- 3:36it's always just a great place to go and dialogue about all
- 3:38things Spider. Sports and everything is always
- 3:40positive on the message board, right Porter?
- 3:43Yeah, well, I mean, you know, I'd say that is depending on the
- 3:47the person who's reading it. I would say, you know, sometimes
- 3:51you know, your most passionate fans, the people that are the,
- 3:54the most, that care the most about the program, you know,
- 3:58we'll, we'll express their opinions.
- 3:59So you'll get some, you'll get some strong opinions about, you
- 4:02know, all things spider sports out there.
- 4:04But the key is it's a great place for community to be built.
- 4:08It's it's anytime you're building community around the
- 4:10program that we all care about. That's helpful.
- 4:13And so, yeah, I'd say go out there, spend some time, join the
- 4:16board, voice your opinion, make sure it's heard.
- 4:20It is a great place to to just to just gather as a fan and, and
- 4:23and talk all things spider sports.
- 4:25So moving on to another topic, we talked in a prior episode
- 4:29about season tickets and what would change with pricing,
- 4:32potentially with the need for some more fundraising to help
- 4:37pay our players. I know there's been some
- 4:39updates, right Porter? Yeah, so I got my I got my, my
- 4:43season ticket invoice for the ladies program.
- 4:46Really good value for this. So my 2 tickets, my invoices for
- 4:52two tickets for $120.00. I called the ticket office and
- 4:57asked them just because I told him I was going to podcast about
- 5:00this. What I was told is the range is
- 5:02between 50 and $70 depending on what category you fall into per
- 5:08season ticket. Now, to do the quick math, guys
- 5:11and gals, there are probably between 15 and 20 home games.
- 5:15So you're talking about, let's say there's 1718 games.
- 5:18You're talking about $3 a game to have a, to have a season
- 5:22ticket to one of the best teams in the country.
- 5:24So it, it's value, whether it's $70.00 or $50 is unmistakable.
- 5:28It isn't. It's a screaming value on how to
- 5:32use your time. You don't pay for parking.
- 5:34It's just. It's just.
- 5:35Awesome. Now it's general admission,
- 5:36right? All the tickets are.
- 5:38Yeah, so, so my tickets have a row and seat number.
- 5:42I called and asked that too. They said no, you can sit
- 5:44anywhere. The other cool thing that they
- 5:46told me was you can actually request to sit on the floor.
- 5:51It used to be, I think you could sit on the floor if you had
- 5:53general admission tickets. Now they're going to, they see
- 5:55that as a additional value they're adding.
- 5:57So I you can talk to the ticket office if you want to sit on the
- 6:00floor. You can't get any more immersive
- 6:02in your college basketball experience than that.
- 6:04You can do that. You have to just pay a little
- 6:06bit extra. But I mean, we're talking
- 6:08pennies on the dollar compared to what that's worth.
- 6:10So if you have ever dreamed about sitting on the floor, you
- 6:14could actually do that for a top 25 team in America by just
- 6:18calling up the ticket office right now and and asking for a
- 6:21floor seat. See what you get.
- 6:23And on the men's side, I know where you do have to pay for
- 6:26parking. That parking pass went from 175
- 6:30to 200. And there was also an increase,
- 6:33at least for my season tickets, where we sit about a 12%
- 6:36increase in tickets, but it is less per game because we're
- 6:38going up from 15 to 18 home. Games.
- 6:41More games equals more value. So it sounds like they tried to
- 6:43keep the prices really the same, which is great.
- 6:45Right. Yep.
- 6:46And pricing has gone up in the past too.
- 6:48So I think when you're seeing a 12% increase in pricing, like
- 6:52that's hard to put that on anything that's changed in
- 6:55college basketball financially, Yeah, things cost more and
- 6:59prices have gone up before, right, when it comes to.
- 7:01Pricing, right? I mean, you figure, you know,
- 7:02the cost of the program for especially on the ladies side
- 7:05had to go up pretty substantially to keep the, the,
- 7:08the, the players that we have as well as retain our awesome
- 7:11coach, our, I'll say our awesome coaching staff on the women's
- 7:15side. So the fact that Richmond did
- 7:17such a wonderful job of not jacking up the prices super
- 7:20high, I think that's actually good.
- 7:22And in other news, sticking on the women's side, you may have
- 7:27seen Rachel Ahlstrom in the news first.
- 7:30She got selected to three on three to three on three
- 7:34representing the USA in the FIBA tournament.
- 7:38That first, even the selection was, was great because that
- 7:42meant that she was going to be practicing and playing with kind
- 7:44of super talented women like herself.
- 7:47They were declared champions. I'll admit, I try to understand
- 7:51more about 3:00 and 3:00 and it's hard.
- 7:53There's, you know, stop two, stop four, stop six.
- 7:56I'm not sure what all that means, but in the long run, the
- 8:00USA women's team won. They were declared champions and
- 8:04from my understanding, they by doing that, they've moved on to
- 8:08the kind of final round, which is at the end of September.
- 8:12I think the 17th to the 30th is the entire window.
- 8:15And it's in China. So I do not know what that
- 8:18means. Is it the same roster or kind of
- 8:21how does that work? I mean, these are all I think, I
- 8:24think on the women's side, they were all college players.
- 8:26Maybe there was one graduate. But anyway, some more news to
- 8:31come. It's it's exciting that she's
- 8:32got to play with elite talent and travel and, you know, add
- 8:37that to kind of what what she was able to accomplish this
- 8:39summer. We haven't talked a lot about
- 8:41Olstrom yet in our previous 4 episodes, but what I'll tell the
- 8:45folks who may not be as familiar with the ladies program.
- 8:49Rachel Olstrom is one of, if not the best 3 point shooter in the
- 8:54history of Richmond college basketball, men or women's.
- 8:58She last year in a game against Oakland hit 11/3 pointers.
- 9:01That's out of like, I think a total of 14 shots.
- 9:03She did that to set the school record in a, in a game we won,
- 9:07but we won handily. But if you give Rachel any space
- 9:12behind a three-point line, she's going to make you pay.
- 9:14And so to have a chance to watch her one more season play with
- 9:18Maggie, they play a great, you know, two person game where
- 9:21there's a lot of give and go, a lot of pick and roll.
- 9:23They just seem to anticipate where each other are going to be
- 9:26and you add an Alley Sweeney, who's, you know, an up and
- 9:28coming star for Richmond basketball.
- 9:32It's going to be great. It's going to be a special year.
- 9:34We're going to do a women's episode for you here in the not
- 9:35too distant future to talk about the roster on that side.
- 9:39But you got to get out and see Rachel while she's still here.
- 9:43We got one more year of her. We got Maggie for one more year.
- 9:46It is just that. It's just that good.
- 9:48So you got to go out and see it. And last bit of news we'll cover
- 9:53here gets into the financial side.
- 9:56As we talked about a couple episodes, there's a lot of noise
- 9:59as to what's going on. You know, we know there was the
- 10:03the settlement, the NCAA settlement with former players
- 10:06that led to universities being able to pay their players.
- 10:09Since that episode, just recently actually, there was a
- 10:13Trump executive order that was tied to college sports.
- 10:17I think it was someone from the athletics said that that could
- 10:19have been written by the NCAA. So there wasn't really anything
- 10:21new in that. It was more an attempt to codify
- 10:26what the settlement was intended to do.
- 10:29There's also been some clarification on what the
- 10:32collectives can do. First it came out that they
- 10:36weren't allowed to pay players. They can only help coordinate
- 10:39pay for players from for profit companies.
- 10:43That's changed. They are allowed to pay.
- 10:45That just came out a couple days ago.
- 10:46So for name which would likeness, the collectives are
- 10:48still around. Again, it still has to be for
- 10:51profit businesses. It's gonna have to be fair
- 10:53market value. So those are all things that
- 10:55came out of the settlement. So a lot of noise, but in the
- 10:58long run, kind of every so far, everything we said in episode 2
- 11:01is still holding true. There will be more noise.
- 11:04So this topic is far from over. The excellent episode 2 for
- 11:07sure. So, Porter, you just were in
- 11:09Canada. Why don't you tell us a little
- 11:11bit about your trip, you know what you what you love, things
- 11:14you learn, and then we can talk about some of our prior Spider
- 11:18players and maybe some current Spider players from Canada.
- 11:20Despite, you know, misperception.
- 11:22So I'm not actually actively recruiting for the university as
- 11:25this is a fan based podcast. But that doesn't mean that I,
- 11:29you know, didn't appreciate and I don't appreciate the wonderful
- 11:33heritage of players that Richmond has yielded from
- 11:36Canada. But a couple fun facts about
- 11:38Canada for the listener. Number one, it's the longest
- 11:41coastline in the world. Canada spans 3 different oceans,
- 11:44touches 3 different oceans. So it is a big, big country.
- 11:48They have more freshwater than any other country in the world,
- 11:50more lakes than any other country in the world.
- 11:53Most of the population lives close to the the border with the
- 11:56United States. But the probably the most
- 11:58impressive and important thing in relation to this podcast
- 12:02about Canada is we would not have the game of basketball
- 12:07without the country of Canada. And that is because James
- 12:10Naismith, the founder of basketball, was a Canadian
- 12:12physical education instructor born in Canada.
- 12:15So we owe basketball to the Canadians, at least one of them,
- 12:19and that makes it really relevant to what Tom and I are
- 12:22doing here today. Yeah, that's right.
- 12:25Well, let's talk about our players that are from Canada.
- 12:29Some were recruited from US schools, but they grew up in
- 12:32Canada and some were recruited directly in Canada.
- 12:34We've decided to try to rank these players.
- 12:38I think we came up with six total players who grew up in
- 12:42Canada or played in Canada. And if we end up being wrong
- 12:45about that, please let us know. That's what we found.
- 12:48And we're going to rank the top three.
- 12:50So we've got an honorable mention category where kind of
- 12:53this is in no particular order. And then we'll go through our
- 12:56top three. And again, for missing somebody,
- 12:59we apologize. Give us that feedback.
- 13:01Also, if you've got a different ranking, we'd love to hear.
- 13:04But in terms of honorable mention, we'll start with
- 13:07current freshman. We have Dylan Hominek.
- 13:09Yeah. From British Columbia, we we
- 13:11talked a little bit about him in episode 3 on what we saw or was
- 13:15it Episode 4 what we saw from him in practice?
- 13:18Yeah, we're excited to see what, what the future holds for this
- 13:20young man. He's he could be a a really good
- 13:22player. And also in that honorable
- 13:25mention category, Matt Grace. Matt is interesting because what
- 13:29will go down in the lore of Spider basketball as hitting one
- 13:34of the biggest shots in our history?
- 13:36If you guys remember this 2022, the Atlantic 10 championship
- 13:39game against Davidson, we're down to points, 19 seconds left,
- 13:44pass it in the mat, he turns guy cuts him off.
- 13:47He kind of goes right through the guy, but the guy was still
- 13:49moving. So it was a foul and the
- 13:51defender hits the layup, makes the and one shot puts us up.
- 13:55One gives Andre the goose goose to send a chance to make a
- 13:58really nice defensive play to closeout the game.
- 14:01And the Spiders win the Atlantic 10 title in advance to the NCAA
- 14:04tournament. Yep, and that.
- 14:06Was I guess, I think it's junior year and then a senior year was
- 14:09the first year he was a starter. Grant had graduated and he, you
- 14:13know, got his chance to to be a starter for us.
- 14:16And then also honorable mention, I think the the best name of all
- 14:21of our Canadian players is Francis Cedric Motel.
- 14:24Yeah, Great role player for Richmond.
- 14:25FCM played, you know, it was kind of a glue guy.
- 14:28Played a lot of different, filled a lot of different needs
- 14:31on those teams between 2009, 2012.
- 14:34So, Francis, Cedric Martel, Yeah.
- 14:37OK, so let's get into the top three #3 we have the 2006
- 14:43graduate Jermaine Buckner. Buckner, the first Canadian
- 14:47recruit that we could find, so he opened the pipeline for us.
- 14:50So actually recruited by John Beeline back in 2001, played
- 14:53for, really had connections to all three coaches at the time.
- 14:57Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 14:58So he played for Wainwright for three years and then his senior
- 15:01year was Mooney's first year. And we had, we've talked about
- 15:04him already on this podcast. It's funny, we're on episode 5
- 15:07and it's the second Buckner reference, but he was a a great
- 15:10forward for us and you know, was averaged double digits his
- 15:15senior year at Richmond #2 is current Spider junior point
- 15:22guard Mckell Time. Yeah.
- 15:24I mean, Mikkel, Tyne is a, is, is a, is a good player.
- 15:28I think when we talked about how to how to rank between Tyne and
- 15:31Buckner, you came up with the point that that Tyne is only two
- 15:36years into his career and he's had numbers wise in those first
- 15:39two years to Buckner's first two years.
- 15:41So is this somewhat based on potential what we think Tyne
- 15:44could be? I think we're excited to see
- 15:46what Tyne's going to bring this. Year and the number one player
- 15:51from Canada is 22 grad Nathan Kayo.
- 15:56Yeah, I mean, you guys, everybody remembers Nathan Kayo,
- 15:58remembers how good he was probably, statistically
- 16:01speaking, not a top five power forward for Richmond.
- 16:05But like if you saw him in certain games, you would say
- 16:08that was the best player on the floor.
- 16:10I'll give you a couple places where he really shined back in
- 16:13November of 2020, we played Kentucky on the road in Kentucky
- 16:17and everybody thought, you know, there's no way that Richmond's
- 16:20going to beat Kentucky on their home floor.
- 16:21But Nathan KO man looked like the best big man in the game.
- 16:25In that game. He scored 18 points against
- 16:26them. They could not stop him.
- 16:27And we we won the game pretty handily 7664.
- 16:31And I just remember saying, wow, if KO is this good, we're going
- 16:34to be really, really tough to beat this year.
- 16:36The other thing was the the big game against Iowa in the
- 16:39tournament. Yeah, I mean, the upset over
- 16:42Iowa, he was a big part of that. Scored 15 points, most of that
- 16:45in the second-half. Hit a big hit, hit a couple and
- 16:49ones in the final minutes to. To seal it and what's
- 16:51interesting, you look at KO stats, I'm just kind of scanning
- 16:54them now like, you know, he couldn't, he was not a
- 16:56three-point shooter. He didn't get to the foul line a
- 16:58lot. But his field goal percentage is
- 17:02insane. It's, you know, over 50% didn't
- 17:06play much as freshman year, but those other three years his
- 17:09field goal percentage is, is incredible.
- 17:11So when he went to the basket, he scored and has been a was a
- 17:16great spider for us and. And I think he's playing
- 17:18professionally in Canada right now.
- 17:20So he's continued his basketball career.
- 17:23Just a, just a great guy to watch.
- 17:24And if you could have, if you could have a power forward every
- 17:27year like KO playing for your team, I think you'd you'd sign
- 17:29up and say yes to that right now.
- 17:31A footnote too on Buckner. I forgot to mention he's an
- 17:33assistant coach with the Charlotte Hornets.
- 17:35So like a lot of Spider players who didn't have NBA careers,
- 17:39they find themselves kind of in the NBA.
- 17:41He was a coach for the Celtics at some point to an assistant
- 17:44so. Yeah, You know, you don't think
- 17:45the other fun thing about Buckner.
- 17:47So when I was in Canada, we ended our trip in Calgary and
- 17:51Calgary is pretty far north. I mean, it's significantly north
- 17:53of of the border and most of the places in Canada were more
- 17:56familiar with like Ottawa and in Toronto and things like that.
- 18:00But Bucker played, he grew up in Edmonton and Edmonton's two
- 18:03hours north of Calgary. And so played for a small,
- 18:06played for a small high school here in Edmonton.
- 18:07And I keep thinking to myself, you know, what must the winters
- 18:11have been like when he was playing basketball in high
- 18:13school, that was that was really cold up there.
- 18:14So just a fun fact. Yeah, hopefully there was a nice
- 18:18heated indoor gym. Yeah, I'm sure you spent a lot
- 18:20of time in the gym because you didn't want to spend it outside.
- 18:22Now let's go on and talk about who we would rank as the top
- 18:28point guard of all time. This is a tough one, Tom, Really
- 18:32tough. And, and how we define who's top
- 18:35or who's the greatest. We're going to look at and and
- 18:37talk about their stats, kind of how did they perform in terms of
- 18:41assists, points, etcetera. We'll talk about awards kind of
- 18:47where they got extra recognized. Yeah.
- 18:49Where where'd they get that recognition you got to?
- 18:51Have third parties. You got to have postseason in
- 18:53here, too. And then, yes, that's right.
- 18:54And three is just how did the team do?
- 18:57So the team needs to do well and that's got to include some sort
- 19:00of postseason success. So kind of that's how we looked
- 19:05at it. Porter, I'm going to put you on
- 19:06the spot first. Who do you believe is the best
- 19:09all time point guard at the University of Richmond?
- 19:12And to to be fair, you're only giving me one that I can say is
- 19:15the best. I'm not allowed to give you a
- 19:18tie. So I looked at a lot.
- 19:20I looked at 11 different players.
- 19:21I really dug deep. I mean, I, I went all the way
- 19:24back into the 1960s, came up with some really deserving
- 19:28names. I mean, you know, you got great,
- 19:30great guards like Greg Beckwith and Jacob Gilliard and Kenny
- 19:34Atkinson, all who were right there in my top five.
- 19:39But the number one overall in the history.
- 19:42If you if I can only pick one for me, it's Kevin Anderson.
- 19:45Kevin played for us from 2007 to 2011, played point guard most of
- 19:50his time here. He was an incredible scorer,
- 19:52second all time in points with 21165 points.
- 19:55He won 810 player of the year in 2010, which is a really big
- 19:59thing. He won 810 freshman of the year
- 20:01in 2008, the Atlantic 10 tournament MVP.
- 20:05Back in 2011, he was two time first team All Atlantic, 10:10
- 20:09and 11:00. He was a an AP honorable mention
- 20:13for All American back in 2010. He led us to the postseason
- 20:16Sweet 16 run, that magical run where we beat Vanderbilt in
- 20:19Morehead State. And he had a big shot at the end
- 20:22of. That game, yeah, in the about 19
- 20:25seconds left in the Vanderbilt game, for sure, he was known to
- 20:28be a clutch performer. I mean, I think when we talked
- 20:30to Coach Mooney a couple weeks back, even coach said, you know,
- 20:33he's one of those confident players he's ever had.
- 20:36You know, he just was the kind of guy that wanted the ball in
- 20:38his hand when the game was on the line.
- 20:40Beyond scoring, though, he was. He was in the top five for
- 20:43assists and steals at Richmond. Of course, his number has been
- 20:47retired #14 hangs in the rafters.
- 20:50So it's a big, big honor to to, to get, you know, just the
- 20:55combination of all those factors was why I nudged him out over
- 21:00Kenny Atkinson, Greg Beckwith and Jacob Gilliard.
- 21:03Yeah, it is a tough one, and it's hard to argue against Kevin
- 21:08Anderson. I'll tell you as I did my own
- 21:10research. I picked someone that wasn't
- 21:13even in your top five. What shock?
- 21:15This is not. This is not.
- 21:17Something's happening here. OK, so the best point guard that
- 21:21we've ever had at the University of Richmond is Pam Bryant.
- 21:25Oh, OK, Wait a minute. Time out.
- 21:28Time out. You didn't tell me we were.
- 21:29We were covering the ladies. Program, this is best point
- 21:32guard conversation. So let let me talk about Pam
- 21:34Bryant now. She was at U of R from 86
- 21:38through 90. So our freshman year, she was
- 21:40there. I'll, I'll be the first to admit
- 21:43I did not go to a women's game my freshman year.
- 21:45So I you can go. To a lot of classes either.
- 21:48Oh, that is not true. Remember, my parents might be
- 21:50listening. But anyway, so she was a, you
- 21:53know, four year player at at U of R to give you a little
- 21:56context, 2 years before she got there, our team went 8 and 20.
- 22:01And then the year before was when we hired a new coach,
- 22:05Stephanie Gately, and the team went 7 and 21 in her first year
- 22:10as coach, but she did recruit Pam Bryant.
- 22:13So this is how the team did the next four years.
- 22:14Freshman year they went 13 and 15, sophomore 21 and eight, then
- 22:1924, nine, and then 25 and five. Now, of course she's one player.
- 22:24Like what was her part on that team?
- 22:25Well, her freshman year she was CA Rookie of the year.
- 22:29Her sophomore year she was second team, All CAA and All
- 22:33Defensive Team. Her junior year she was CA
- 22:37Player of the year and All Defensive team.
- 22:40Her senior year she was CAA Player of the year, All
- 22:44Defensive team, CAA tournament team, won the tournament MVP and
- 22:50took the Spiders to their first NCAA game in history.
- 22:55Points wise her she scored 10 her freshman year average per
- 22:59game she scored 13 her sophomore, 17 1/2 as a junior,
- 23:0417.3 as a senior. Again two time CAA player of the
- 23:11year. She also had her has her name
- 23:17and and number in the rafters at U of R and was also named to the
- 23:23CAA's 25th anniversary women's basketball team.
- 23:26So over the 25 years when they did that, I think in 2009, 2010,
- 23:32she was considered one of the top players ever in the CAA.
- 23:38So maybe it's a little bit of a curveball.
- 23:40Yeah, definitely it it it was fun to research Pam because I
- 23:44did never saw her play. I mean if.
- 23:45You're going to go to the ladies, You got to talk about
- 23:47Bell Kaklanis. She had an incredible career at
- 23:49Richmond. You know, there's just a lot of
- 23:51great point guards on on both sides of the of the both teams,
- 23:54men's and women's. And the one thing that's kind of
- 23:56like just an interesting note on Pam Bryant is that she married
- 24:01Brian Jordan. Great.
- 24:02One of the greatest sport college athletes of all time.
- 24:05Yeah. And well, pro athletes too,
- 24:07Yeah. And the grand scheme of things,
- 24:08but yeah, the that's kind of a super couple at U of R if you
- 24:12don't remember, Brian Jordan, he played baseball at U of R He
- 24:15played football at U of R He then played he played baseball
- 24:20primarily for the Cardinals and some for the Braves, and then
- 24:24played in the NFL for the Falcons, I think.
- 24:26Yeah. So.
- 24:28And one of only like a handful of people to ever have done
- 24:31that, played a played on a pro team in two different sports, I
- 24:34mean. Yeah, that's right.
- 24:36Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Brian Jordan, they were kind of all
- 24:39contemporaries. Just to give you a few of the
- 24:41other names that I considered just because I want people to
- 24:44know that we didn't forget about him.
- 24:46I mean, said Lindsay. You know, loved him.
- 24:48Probably on the top five for me if he doesn't get injured senior
- 24:51year. Kendall Anthony, great, great,
- 24:53great point guard for us. Jonny Moats back in the 1960s,
- 24:57drafted into the NBA, averaged 25 a game one year.
- 25:01Definitely would be in the conversation.
- 25:03Shaundre Jones, kind of think of him still as more of a #2 than a
- 25:06number one guard, but you know, definitely a top ten.
- 25:10You know, at that at the point if we consider him there.
- 25:13These are just a few of the names.
- 25:14Carlos Cueto, Scott Unger, you know, just some great names out
- 25:17there, folks that that that played the point position for
- 25:21Richmond. Well, we'd love to get your
- 25:23feedback. Did we miss somebody?
- 25:25Who would you put as #1? How crazy am I to see Pam Bryant
- 25:31as the greatest point guard ever then?
- 25:33If they find you crazy, they can answer to Brian Jordan.
- 25:38Anyway, we're running out of time, so I think we're going to
- 25:40wrap up here. Hope you enjoyed Episode 5.
