- 0:17Hello my beautiful souls. Welcome to the 125th solo
- 0:23episode of Living Without Fear. I'm Master Berkey, your folks
- 0:27from Switzerland, and I'm so happy you're here.
- 0:31If you're new to my podcast, I'm so grateful you found your way
- 0:36to this space where we speak from the heart, where we don't
- 0:41hide, where we shine. Now we run it in our tears and
- 0:46in our joy. And if you are a returning
- 0:50listener, thank you for walking with me on this path of growth,
- 0:57vulnerability and truth. Family, such a beautiful word,
- 1:03and yet for many of us, also a source of deep challenges.
- 1:10Today I want to share a story from my own family.
- 1:15Not to blame anyone, but to reflect together on how we can
- 1:22choose love over all patterns. Today I want to open my heart.
- 1:29It's not easy to speak about my family, especially my younger
- 1:34brother, because there are so many emotions and I don't want
- 1:40to make anyone look bad. But I also know that many of you
- 1:47listening carry similar stories, and I want my experience to help
- 1:54you. Because family can be one of our
- 1:58greatest sources of joy and at the same time one of our deepest
- 2:04sources of pain. I want to talk about how we can
- 2:11deal with family conflicts differently, how we can break
- 2:16the patterns that were passed down from our parents and maybe
- 2:22even from our grandparents. Those pattern of reacting, of
- 2:28hurting back when we've been hurt, of keeping this cycle of
- 2:34anger alive. I don't want to repeat those
- 2:38patterns, and most of all, I don't want my two sons to repeat
- 2:45them. The story begins with my parents
- 2:50house. My mother passed away and my
- 2:54father moved into an elderly home.
- 2:58Suddenly this house full of memories becomes something that
- 3:04has to be divided, cleared and sold.
- 3:09For those of you who have been through something similar, you
- 3:15know how emotional this process can be.
- 3:20The house is not just walls, it's a container of childhood
- 3:25memories, of laughter and tears, of warmth and wounds.
- 3:33At first, my brother wanted the house for one of his children,
- 3:39but then when the inheritance process took longer than he
- 3:43liked, he changed his mind. I felt we needed to wait.
- 3:50It's the normal legal process and also for me it was a way of
- 3:55honouring our mother's passing. But he didn't want to wait.
- 4:01He finally said he didn't want the house anymore.
- 4:05That decision was unexpected, but it was his choice.
- 4:12The more painful part came later.
- 4:15My brother created an excel list of things from the house he
- 4:19wanted. I added some bigger items from
- 4:23my elder son and a few things for myself.
- 4:27I didn't want to go into every little detail.
- 4:31Sometimes I just thought these are family belongings, we will
- 4:37figure it out together. But when my sons and I rented
- 4:44the bus and went to the house, we discovered that my brother
- 4:49had already taken a lot of things without writing them on
- 4:54the list. Even from my old bedroom, even
- 4:58the things from my mother that I would have loved to keep, I felt
- 5:05intruded upon, like a piece of my childhood had been taken
- 5:11without asking. When I told him I was hurt, he
- 5:17didn't apologise. Instead, he became angry and
- 5:22asked me to be fair to him. His reaction hurt even more than
- 5:29the missing objects, because what I longed for was
- 5:35understanding. As simple I see that this is
- 5:41hard for you, but instead I was met with defense and anger.
- 5:50And here's the truth. That moment broke something in
- 5:54me. Since last year I had already
- 5:58felt that something was off between US and I couldn't repair
- 6:04it. This incident made it worse.
- 6:09So while being at the house, my two sons saw me very upset and
- 6:15very hurt and my heart broke. Not because of my brother, but
- 6:22because I want to be a role model for my sons.
- 6:26I want to show them that we can deal differently with pain, that
- 6:32we don't need to repeat old family patterns, one sibling
- 6:37hurting another and the other giving it back in the same way.
- 6:42I don't want to live like that, and I don't want them to live
- 6:48like that either. So I apologize to my boys.
- 6:54I told them I'm sorry you see me so upset.
- 6:59This is not how I want to react. I'm learning too.
- 7:06The next morning I did what helps me most.
- 7:09I meditated and I journaled. I poured my heart and my anger
- 7:16onto paper and slowly, the storm inside, inside me calm down.
- 7:23I could breathe again. I could see more clearly, and I
- 7:29realized something important. It's not really about the
- 7:34objects. It's not about the sewing
- 7:37machine or the sewing books or even my childhood room.
- 7:42These things carry memories, yes, but the real weight is in
- 7:48the feelings I have toward my brother.
- 7:54And in that moment of clarity, I decided I will not let my hurt
- 8:00and anger poison my daily life. I will not let bitterness grow
- 8:07in my heart because what counts is not who gets which object.
- 8:14It's how I choose to live in my own peace.
- 8:20I've reminded myself my purpose is to be a light in my family,
- 8:26and being a light does not mean winning arguments or proving
- 8:32that I am right. It means staying connected to my
- 8:37heart even when I am misunderstood.
- 8:41It means choosing forgiveness again and again.
- 8:47So I chose silence. I chose not to respond to my
- 8:53brother's anger, not to explain, not to defend.
- 9:00I let him say what he wants, but I don't react.
- 9:05I've done this before when he wrote mean messages to me
- 9:10earlier, and I've learned sometimes the most powerful
- 9:15thing we can do is not to fight back, but to remain calm, to
- 9:23remain centered, to let the storm pass without letting it
- 9:29sweep us away. And here is what I want you, my
- 9:34dear listener, to take away from this story.
- 9:39First, family conflicts are normal.
- 9:43You are not alone if you fight with siblings, parents, or
- 9:48relatives behind closed doors. Every family has its wounds.
- 9:56Second, objects are not the real issue.
- 10:01Often it's not about the furniture, the jewellery, the
- 10:05photos. It's about what they symbolize,
- 10:10about feeling seen, respected, valued.
- 10:15When we recognize that, we can go deeper.
- 10:20Third, patterns can be broken. Just because your parents
- 10:27reacted with anger doesn't mean you must.
- 10:31Just because your grandparents held grudges doesn't mean you
- 10:36must. You have the power to stop the
- 10:40cycle. 4th Silence can be healing.
- 10:47We often think we need to defend ourselves, explain, prove our
- 10:55side. But sometimes silence is
- 10:59stronger. It says I will not play this
- 11:04game. I choose peace. 5th.
- 11:09Forgiveness is freedom. Forgiveness doesn't mean what
- 11:14happened was OK. It means I choose not to carry
- 11:19this burden anymore. I forgive to free my own heart.
- 11:28I know this is not easy. I don't share this story because
- 11:32I have mastered it. I share it because I am in it,
- 11:38learning step by step. And maybe today you needed to
- 11:44hear this, that you 2 can choose a different path in your family.
- 11:51You can be the one who breaks the cycle, you can be the light.
- 11:58And let me tell you, being the light doesn't mean being
- 12:03perfect. I was upset and my sons saw it.
- 12:08But even in that moment, I could show them something important.
- 12:14That we can fall and we can get back up.
- 12:18That we can say sorry. That we can learn and grow
- 12:23together. That, my dear listener, is true
- 12:28leadership, not pretending to never stumble, but showing how
- 12:34to rise again. And if you want to get coached
- 12:39by me, get in touch for your first free coaching session.
- 12:45Thank you, dear Listener, for spending your precious time with
- 12:49me. You're amazing and you are a
- 12:51gift to everyone who crosses your path.
- 12:56If no one has told you this today, let me say it again.
- 13:00You're worthy, you deserve to be loved, and you matter.
- 13:06Have an amazing day and I'll talk to you next week.
- 13:36Yeah.
