Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right, let's come home. Luckson's got himself into a bit
- 0:03Speaker 1: of a squabble again with his coalition partners. This is
- 0:06Speaker 1: what he said to Carrie Woodham yesterday.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Well, I think we should have definitely referend him on
- 0:10Speaker 2: the four year term, and I'm open for saying whichould
- 0:12Speaker 2: we send it back out to New Zealand and say
- 0:14Speaker 2: they still supported for them. Would you do that if
- 0:16Speaker 2: you're Prime minister next year? Yeah, I think I would.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Now, his coalition partner Winston Peters is calling him desperate.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Point is what did the Prime Minister of all people say,
- 0:24Speaker 2: at this close to an election, For goodness sake, I
- 0:26Speaker 2: kind of think that the Poles aren't looking good for
- 0:29Speaker 2: the Prime Minister and there's this sense of desperation. That's
- 0:31Speaker 2: the reality of it all.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Liam here, lawyer and political commentator with me. Liam, good morning,
- 0:37Speaker 1: good morning. What's your take here?
- 0:39Speaker 3: Well, there's two things this could be. It could be
- 0:42Speaker 3: just a straightforward moment of el discipline or yes, so
- 0:46Speaker 3: to speak, or it could be a three dimensional chess.
- 0:50Speaker 3: The arguments for three dimensional chess would be that it's
- 0:53Speaker 3: a deliberate wedge provocation to his coalition partners, who is
- 0:57Speaker 3: obviously frustrated with and that he he's done it to
- 1:02Speaker 3: remind them.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Of how to say the National is a senior partner
- 1:06Speaker 4: and perhaps a single of voters that a stronger National
- 1:08Speaker 4: Party means that you don't have to deal with people
- 1:10Speaker 4: like Uzell Ferson at comfortably sort of weakening that the
- 1:14Speaker 4: main seam to right party. But I think it's more
- 1:16Speaker 4: likely to be an error or a genuine gas because
- 1:21Speaker 4: the fact of the matter is that in the immediate
- 1:24Speaker 4: aftermath he had a national MP's unsure, no one was
- 1:30Speaker 4: really able to say whether this was an announcement or
- 1:33Speaker 4: a policy or just a view, and that makes it
- 1:37Speaker 4: more likely that this wasn't pre planned, it wasn't briefed.
- 1:41Speaker 4: There was something that just happened off the cuff and
- 1:43Speaker 4: then grew up to something much larger than Lucks had
- 1:45Speaker 4: probably wanted it to be.
- 1:47Speaker 1: There is well or did he? I mean, that's the question.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Is it genius or is it a blunder. That's what
- 1:54Speaker 1: everyone's going to be debating today because on one hand,
- 1:58Speaker 1: we are talking about that, but we're talking about Luxon
- 2:01Speaker 1: and at least he's doing something, you know, or saying something.
- 2:04Speaker 1: But on the other hand, it's never going to happen,
- 2:06Speaker 1: so why even raise it. If you're the prime minister
- 2:08Speaker 1: and you can't get what you want, what's the point
- 2:10Speaker 1: of being prime minister?
- 2:11Speaker 3: You know? Yeah, And that's the latter one that sort
- 2:13Speaker 3: of makes it more of a blender or an error
- 2:16Speaker 3: in my view. Look at you can always say that
- 2:19Speaker 3: you know, no publicity is bad publicity. But when you
- 2:23Speaker 3: say things that open up open yourself up for criticism,
- 2:27Speaker 3: hoping yourself up for looking like your party provided provoke
- 2:31Speaker 3: your culition partner who're not getting all well worth, the
- 2:34Speaker 3: costs probably outweigh any benefit.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I think leaam here, political commentator and lawyer.
