Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / ANGELS MAILBAG: Why is owner Arte Moreno reluctant to shell out big bucks for pitchers?
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome to Halo Territory. I
- 0:12Speaker 1: am Mike D. Giovanna, former Early Times Baseball writer and
- 0:15Speaker 1: host of the show, joined by my regular co host
- 0:17Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo, the former Angel slugger. Today, we're going to
- 0:21Speaker 1: dip into the mail bag again, haven't had one in
- 0:23Speaker 1: a while. Always loved the questions from the fans. First,
- 0:27Speaker 1: we want to wrap up a little business with the
- 0:30Speaker 1: All Star break and some loose ends from that Twins
- 0:33Speaker 1: series over the weekend, Mark, what'd you think of that
- 0:35Speaker 1: home run derby Jordan Walker the Cardinals with a walk
- 0:39Speaker 1: off win? And you know, just wondering what you thought
- 0:42Speaker 1: of the format, especially compared to when you did it
- 0:46Speaker 1: a few years back.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I think I needed a change.
- 0:50Speaker 3: I think they've been trying to change it, trying to
- 0:52Speaker 3: figure out what's going to work. Had gotten very stale,
- 0:56Speaker 3: and I think that you know, a lot of fun
- 0:59Speaker 3: memory is well Chris Berman back back back, but eventually.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Everything runs its course. And I thought, I.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Think most did you start to hear enough people say
- 1:13Speaker 3: that they're either uninterested.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Not going to watch.
- 1:16Speaker 3: It's boring, and you see a lot of the players
- 1:18Speaker 3: don't even hang out till the end, But yeah, they had.
- 1:21Speaker 3: I thought the commentary was really interesting and unique. You
- 1:25Speaker 3: have Barry Bonds, you had Albert Poole's and some others
- 1:28Speaker 3: preaching a lot of the same things that I buy into.
- 1:32Speaker 3: As far as hitting and Jordan Walker, well, you're gonna
- 1:37Speaker 3: have to take my word for it. It was my
- 1:39Speaker 3: wife and a friend I said that that was my pick.
- 1:42Speaker 3: In addition to Breck and Rich's giving us a few
- 1:45Speaker 3: questions and why, I said, I don't really know, but
- 1:49Speaker 3: why not? And you like his swing, He's got leverage,
- 1:52Speaker 3: and I know that he seems pretty like a pretty
- 1:55Speaker 3: cool customer. Now, those Philly fans were I don't think
- 1:58Speaker 3: they were pulling for him, not remotely.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Tough places.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah, facing Shore over two in the final, right, he
- 2:06Speaker 1: didn't have a chance.
- 2:06Speaker 3: He was he was, but he uh, he came through
- 2:09Speaker 3: and it was you know what it made for good
- 2:12Speaker 3: television Netflix? I think, Well, I know their camera angles
- 2:15Speaker 3: were less than ideal at some points, and the first
- 2:18Speaker 3: year doing it baseball, you know, especially with like the
- 2:22Speaker 3: draft the other day, you gotta follow trying you know,
- 2:24Speaker 3: multiple platforms, and I didn't think that was great. Uh,
- 2:28Speaker 3: watching the first picks and then you got to switch
- 2:29Speaker 3: over and just the way it's going. But I thought
- 2:32Speaker 3: it was, uh, you know, the fans will decide if
- 2:36Speaker 3: if the format was better or not this year. I personally,
- 2:39Speaker 3: I enjoyed it, nice finish, It made for good, good TV.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I think a lot of the format changed as well,
- 2:45Speaker 1: was in keeping the players in mind. Do you feel
- 2:49Speaker 1: like it was a little less taxing physically than it
- 2:52Speaker 1: has been in the past for the players?
- 2:54Speaker 3: I think I think so that that format that I
- 2:58Speaker 3: first did in two thousand twelve with the outs was
- 3:04Speaker 3: far less taxing than the time to the five or
- 3:07Speaker 3: was it three minutes, five minutes, whatever it is. It
- 3:09Speaker 3: felt like thirty minutes of hitting. You're taking full, maximum
- 3:13Speaker 3: effort swings. It is incredibly fatigue and you're not used
- 3:17Speaker 3: to that either. So well, most might say, like, oh,
- 3:20Speaker 3: you know, just to do that every day in batting practice.
- 3:22Speaker 2: No you don't. No, I didn't miss it.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I didn't know what I was really getting into either,
- 3:29Speaker 3: you know, for various reasons, I said, probably this makes sense,
- 3:32Speaker 3: and I know that there's not a lot of guys,
- 3:34Speaker 3: it's not a line down the street willing to do
- 3:36Speaker 3: this event. So I think they were really fortunate this
- 3:39Speaker 3: year to get some really good players to buy in
- 3:43Speaker 3: and give it a shot. Hopefully this format may convince
- 3:46Speaker 3: others to do it in the future.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So the Angels another rough series over the weekend in Minnesota.
- 3:52Speaker 1: They lost two of three to fall to thirty eight
- 3:55Speaker 1: and fifty nine. They will enter the post All Star
- 3:58Speaker 1: Break eleven and a half games behind Texas in the
- 4:01Speaker 1: Ale West, and they're tied with the Kansas City Royals
- 4:04Speaker 1: for the worst record in Major League Baseball. What's one
- 4:08Speaker 1: thing that set out to me in that series, Mark,
- 4:12Speaker 1: I think for both of us is this sort of continued,
- 4:15Speaker 1: sort of decline of Jose Siriano with another really so
- 4:20Speaker 1: so so start on Sunday, five inning, pitch three in rounds,
- 4:23Speaker 1: two walks, you think, eh, you know, maybe you'll take it.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Zero strikeouts first time in twenty starts this season he
- 4:30Speaker 1: has now struck out a batter. This is the guy
- 4:33Speaker 1: who opened the season within zero point two four e
- 4:37Speaker 1: r A in his first six starts. He has a
- 4:39Speaker 1: five point four e RA in his last fourteen starts.
- 4:44Speaker 1: That's not that's no longer you know a small sample size.
- 4:48Speaker 1: That's a pretty that's a downward spiral. What's what's going
- 4:50Speaker 1: on with this guy? I wish I knew. I saw
- 4:56Speaker 1: as comments I think to Fletch that were kind of
- 5:01Speaker 1: he said he thinks the overall picture, the numbers are
- 5:03Speaker 1: still pretty good, and he acknowledged it wasn't what it's
- 5:10Speaker 1: not as good as it was in the beginning of
- 5:11Speaker 1: the year. I kind of wonder if his start was
- 5:15Speaker 1: something that even it caught him by surprise as well.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Jim Palmer always talks about being able to you know,
- 5:24Speaker 1: if you have a good outing or especially maybe even
- 5:26Speaker 1: a good pitch, you try and bottle that so you
- 5:28Speaker 1: can remember it, you know what it feels like, you
- 5:30Speaker 1: can repeat it. With Soriano, I don't know if that's
- 5:34Speaker 1: happening at all. I think that he seems to his
- 5:38Speaker 1: his I look at all the advanced reports and the metrics,
- 5:41Speaker 1: he still is kind of his repertoire floats kind of
- 5:45Speaker 1: in the wind, and I assume he is game planning
- 5:48Speaker 1: for the team he's facing. But what I don't see
- 5:50Speaker 1: is him kind of committing to his best stuff and saying,
- 5:56Speaker 1: come and get it to the opposing hitters. It seems
- 5:59Speaker 1: like he's trying to kind of bob and weave based
- 6:02Speaker 1: on who he's facing. And I think his stuff, especially
- 6:06Speaker 1: early in the year, is more than good enough to say,
- 6:08Speaker 1: you know what, I don't care who's at the plate.
- 6:11Speaker 3: You're not gonna hit my You know, my pitches are
- 6:13Speaker 3: going to the way they move, the velocity. So I'd
- 6:17Speaker 3: like to see him get a little angrier too. I
- 6:19Speaker 3: don't know if I know it's may not be in
- 6:21Speaker 3: his DNA, but it's all right to look a little
- 6:24Speaker 3: pissed off. I don't know why they took him out
- 6:25Speaker 3: after seventy five, seventy seven pitches.
- 6:29Speaker 2: I nobody really knew.
- 6:30Speaker 3: The broadcast was a little bewildered as well, and what
- 6:34Speaker 3: happened then. Yet still seth have to go more than usual,
- 6:38Speaker 3: more than you know, a singular inning, and Zephyr John
- 6:41Speaker 3: as well as Zephor John gave up by a home
- 6:43Speaker 3: run after having a clean inning, and he's been pitching
- 6:46Speaker 3: much better. Still, set punched out four batters too, So
- 6:50Speaker 3: the short start, it's I think we got to maybe
- 6:53Speaker 3: a question about that in the mail bag too.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I'm sure we do. Last thing, I'm sorry, and this
- 6:58Speaker 1: has come up in a couple of conversations on had
- 7:00Speaker 1: with people, and I don't know if you see this too.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Some people wonder if he's too nice. I don't know
- 7:06Speaker 1: that you I mean, I think you do need somewhat
- 7:08Speaker 1: of a killer instinct, at least when you're on the mound.
- 7:11Speaker 1: You know, he can be the nicest guy off the field.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I've known plenty of guys who are like that over
- 7:16Speaker 1: the years. But would he benefit from, as you say,
- 7:19Speaker 1: maybe being a little bit angrier on the mound. I
- 7:23Speaker 1: don't think it's a lack of effort, because we see
- 7:24Speaker 1: this guy sweating his tail off, and you know he's in,
- 7:28Speaker 1: he's involved, he's mentally involved that he really cares. He's
- 7:31Speaker 1: a really good kid. I just wonder sometimes maybe that
- 7:35Speaker 1: develops over time with guys. I don't know. He kind
- 7:37Speaker 1: of reminds me a little Irvin Santana, you know, going
- 7:40Speaker 1: back twenty years or so, really soft spoken, really nice
- 7:44Speaker 1: kid off the field, and he eventually developed into a
- 7:46Speaker 1: pretty good picture.
- 7:47Speaker 3: But it took a little while trying to find the
- 7:52Speaker 3: right adjective. But you gotta be a prick out there.
- 7:57Speaker 3: You have to be, and it's hopefully you just keep
- 8:03Speaker 3: it between the lines. But take a guy like her,
- 8:06Speaker 3: I mean, Kershaw's never had a controversy in his life,
- 8:09Speaker 3: revered great teammate. But when you're out there, he's trying
- 8:14Speaker 3: to embarrass you and you never once laid cookie and
- 8:19Speaker 3: they're the only time was in a ball Midwest league
- 8:21Speaker 3: and I got him three and.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Oh the lone homer. He got hack of a lot
- 8:26Speaker 2: more than I ever got him. But a fierce competitor.
- 8:29Speaker 2: We've fierce competitor.
- 8:33Speaker 3: You know, tons of others Lackey and you see it.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I don't know, I can keep rattling off names, but
- 8:40Speaker 3: it's got it's the look, and it's the determination. It's
- 8:43Speaker 3: usually guys that you know. Hopefully they they pushed back
- 8:46Speaker 3: the right way on coming out of the game.
- 8:48Speaker 2: But it's not just okay, there's five minutes.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's I mean, that's not approach. I think can backfire,
- 8:55Speaker 1: right if you're too emotional out there and you get
- 8:58Speaker 1: pissed off at everything. But would you say that especially
- 9:01Speaker 1: I think lacking weaver the first two that come to
- 9:04Speaker 1: my mind. I think it having that edge elevates a
- 9:08Speaker 1: really good picture into a great one. I don't know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: can it make a mediocre picture really good or great?
- 9:14Speaker 1: I'm not sure, but it just seems like that's that's
- 9:17Speaker 1: that's that one thing you know missing with Sorry? Do
- 9:20Speaker 1: you think it it can really elevate his game if
- 9:22Speaker 1: he were to be a little I think.
- 9:24Speaker 3: You should have borrowed some of Patrick Sandoval's frustration and anger.
- 9:29Speaker 3: But that's that's where that's the other side of it,
- 9:32Speaker 3: where you know everything in moderation too little with sorry,
- 9:36Speaker 3: And I thought at times with with sand of Baal
- 9:38Speaker 3: he was pretty demonstrative. And but if I had to
- 9:43Speaker 3: pick between the two, kind of like the guy that
- 9:46Speaker 3: redlines a little bit more and and.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Work on that.
- 9:48Speaker 3: No, Seriously, it's really hard to get when I work
- 9:51Speaker 3: with amateurs and that if you don't see the fire,
- 9:56Speaker 3: it's sometimes hard to find it. I'd rather have to
- 10:00Speaker 3: talk to a kid about toning it back a little bit.
- 10:03Speaker 3: You can do that through perspective and maturity things like that, but.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Trying to rev the engine. Good luck.
- 10:11Speaker 1: We're going to take a quick break for a word
- 10:13Speaker 1: from our sponsors, and when we come back, we will
- 10:15Speaker 1: get right under the mailbag.

- 11:21Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 11:23Speaker 1: Mike d. Gievano. Let's get right into the mail bag.
- 11:26Speaker 1: First question from Noah Share on x Mark. How do
- 11:31Speaker 1: you balance the fact that it seems Kurt Suzuki has
- 11:34Speaker 1: no pulse or respect from the room and also the
- 11:37Speaker 1: fact that he was given the roster he was given.
- 11:39Speaker 1: They're on pace to lose one hundred games for the
- 11:41Speaker 1: first time in franchise history, and it seems there's no
- 11:44Speaker 1: light at the end of the tunnel. Well, I'm glad
- 11:48Speaker 1: this one went to Mark. It seems like you might
- 11:52Speaker 1: have written it. I did not write this question.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Can you tell me what was the first part of it? Again?
- 11:59Speaker 1: How do you balance the fact that it seems Kurtzuzuki
- 12:02Speaker 1: has no pulse or respect from the room and also
- 12:05Speaker 1: the fact that he was given the roster He was given.
- 12:09Speaker 3: The roster part that's that's on the previous general manager
- 12:13Speaker 3: one hundred percent.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Uh. I don't know what else to say about that.
- 12:18Speaker 3: As far as maximizing the talent on the roster, that
- 12:20Speaker 3: comes down to the instruction and the information given A
- 12:25Speaker 3: nice blend modern world with the analytics and hopefully.
- 12:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:30Speaker 3: That's one of the things that the coaching staff in
- 12:33Speaker 3: the preseason when we highlighted it, and an interesting the
- 12:36Speaker 3: most interesting coaching staff in the game. I think they
- 12:39Speaker 3: don't get talked about hardly ever except for some of
- 12:41Speaker 3: these reasons. But more experience than probably every staff out
- 12:46Speaker 3: there by far, I'd say, but I don't. I don't
- 12:49Speaker 3: know how if they're this is the lemma with these
- 12:52Speaker 3: some of these young players. Is it resonating, is it
- 12:54Speaker 3: making sense? Are they listening to the instructions that the
- 13:00Speaker 3: team is giving, or do you have the outside influences
- 13:02Speaker 3: still sneaking in the back door with some of the
- 13:06Speaker 3: training things that I've said before. As far as commanding respect,
- 13:12Speaker 3: I'm not in that locker room. I don't know, and
- 13:16Speaker 3: I'm not. It's kind of awkward going around asking, but
- 13:20Speaker 3: I I from from what it appears, uh, it could.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I don't know. Kurt.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Kurt is being himself, and I think that when you're
- 13:30Speaker 3: evaluating who to hire, I was, okay, I'll give you
- 13:34Speaker 3: an example. And events like once said that Cess Smith
- 13:38Speaker 3: X teammate of mine and me. He said, I might
- 13:40Speaker 3: make the better bench coach and Seth might make a
- 13:42Speaker 3: better manager. Thought it was a little too uh well,
- 13:46Speaker 3: emotional at times, more steady. Yes, So I don't know.
- 13:51Speaker 3: I've worked hard at it, but uh more of than
- 13:54Speaker 3: Joe Joe Tory mold. But I think Andy had a
- 13:57Speaker 3: point there in evaluating personalities and and you know, saying, hey,
- 14:02Speaker 3: for this role, you might be And in this case,
- 14:06Speaker 3: I'm not saying Kurt's not a managerial material, but he
- 14:09Speaker 3: was thrust into the fire. I think he was coaching
- 14:11Speaker 3: youth baseball and then he you know, was his under
- 14:15Speaker 3: the tutelage of Perry learning how to manage major league baseball.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Where Perry learned how to manage big league baseball. Maybe
- 14:22Speaker 3: you can answer that, but I think it's a learning experience.
- 14:26Speaker 3: One thing that's hard, though, is to kind of get
- 14:29Speaker 3: respect after maybe you didn't set the tone early. And
- 14:33Speaker 3: that's kind of where I fear that.
- 14:34Speaker 1: That's exactly what I was thinking as you were speaking.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I think it's not in Kurt's dna to like be
- 14:41Speaker 1: a you know, a sergeant, you know, and to come
- 14:45Speaker 1: down hard on guys. He was just a player himself
- 14:47Speaker 1: a couple of years ago. Some of these guys were
- 14:49Speaker 1: his teammates, and I think if there was a tone
- 14:52Speaker 1: that needed to be said, it was in the beginning
- 14:54Speaker 1: of the season when we on the show we talked
- 14:56Speaker 1: a lot about a lack of hustle, some perceived pouting.
- 15:00Speaker 1: You know, I just think that was the time. And
- 15:04Speaker 1: he's also hampered, hamstrung, in my opinion, the fact that
- 15:08Speaker 1: he's on a one year contract. He's trying to prove
- 15:10Speaker 1: himself as a game manager. It's hard to sort of
- 15:13Speaker 1: command a room, and from a player's perspective, I have
- 15:16Speaker 1: to think, you know, as a player, not that you're
- 15:18Speaker 1: trying to get away with crap, but it's guy's that
- 15:21Speaker 1: you're thinking, this guy is on a one year deal.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Chances are he's not going to be here. I don't,
- 15:24Speaker 1: you know. I think they respect him as a player
- 15:28Speaker 1: and what he did in the game, But being a
- 15:30Speaker 1: manager is different. And you've said him many times in
- 15:33Speaker 1: the show, These players today are different. Maybe some have
- 15:36Speaker 1: to be coddled, maybe some have to be kicking the
- 15:38Speaker 1: rear ends, maybe some's a balance in between. But it's
- 15:42Speaker 1: tough to do all that. When you're on a one
- 15:43Speaker 1: year contract, you have no security and you know, you
- 15:47Speaker 1: have no idea where you're going to be next year.
- 15:48Speaker 1: It's certainly not a long term play for Kurt here.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Second question from doctor Ben and Coronadol Mar Mike, why
- 15:55Speaker 1: do you think Artie Moreno has been reluctant to ever
- 15:58Speaker 1: shell out the real big dollar for a pitcher. Jared
- 16:01Speaker 1: Weavers five year, eighty five million deal is the highest
- 16:04Speaker 1: he's ever gone, that's true. Do you think he would
- 16:07Speaker 1: have actually gone anywhere near what the Yankees did for
- 16:10Speaker 1: Garrett Cole before pivoting to Anthony Rendon. Well, Ben, Garrett
- 16:17Speaker 1: Cole is the reason Anthony Rendo ended up in Anaheim.
- 16:22Speaker 1: To get back to your original part of the question,
- 16:24Speaker 1: though Arty has always been infatuated with hitters. You know,
- 16:27Speaker 1: he did sign Bartolo Cologne his first year as owner,
- 16:31Speaker 1: along with Vladimir Guerrero and Kelvy Mescobar, another really good
- 16:35Speaker 1: pitcher in those championship teams, So he's not It's not
- 16:39Speaker 1: that he won't spend money on pitching, but when it
- 16:41Speaker 1: comes to the big money, you know, Albert poolhost two
- 16:44Speaker 1: hundred two hundred forty million Josh Hamilton, which was a
- 16:49Speaker 1: real Arty Moreno in John Carpino production one hundred and
- 16:53Speaker 1: twenty five million. They went out and got Vernon Wells.
- 16:56Speaker 1: You know, I think he had one hundred and twenty
- 16:57Speaker 1: million left on his contract, and they did pursue Garrett Cole.
- 17:02Speaker 1: They were right in there to the end. I've talked
- 17:04Speaker 1: to Scott Boris about this many times. I think they
- 17:07Speaker 1: were just not quite willing to go to that next level.
- 17:10Speaker 1: What was Cole's contract? Again, I forget the final three? Yeah,
- 17:15Speaker 1: so there you go. So the Angels are right in it.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And I think what happened is that money kind of
- 17:21Speaker 1: burned a hole in Alreaty's pocket, and it's like, you know,
- 17:25Speaker 1: who else is out there? WHOA just Anthony Rundown just
- 17:28Speaker 1: coming off a thirty six homer one hundred and twenty
- 17:31Speaker 1: four RBI season, leads the Nationals of the World Series title. Yeah,
- 17:35Speaker 1: this guy looks good. And Artie was a little infatuated
- 17:38Speaker 1: with him. He knew his college coach in Houston, and well, boy,
- 17:41Speaker 1: we don't have to talk about how that one worked out.
- 17:43Speaker 2: So I think he got muscled out by the Yankees.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yeah, he did. The Yankees just went a little farther,
- 17:51Speaker 1: a little further with that contract. Artie was right. The
- 17:53Speaker 1: Angels are right there. You know, if you talk to
- 17:56Speaker 1: Scott about it, I'll tell you, and I think he
- 17:58Speaker 1: has quotes on the record saying that, so they were close.
- 18:02Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting with John Moseylock.
- 18:06Speaker 3: You know, it just seems to me that, I mean,
- 18:09Speaker 3: there's a number of teams will get to the playoffs
- 18:12Speaker 3: with the low pay rolls, but how many of them
- 18:15Speaker 3: they generally are not the ones left standing and Phillies
- 18:19Speaker 3: and some of these teams they you have a few
- 18:22Speaker 3: guys that are making you know, they're well twenty five
- 18:25Speaker 3: per or whatever it comes out to, and that might
- 18:27Speaker 3: be over five seasons. So one hundred and twenty five
- 18:29Speaker 3: million boxes is you know, there's most rotations have on
- 18:34Speaker 3: the higher payroll teams, guys that make those types of
- 18:38Speaker 3: dollars and Angels have been very reluctant to have a
- 18:42Speaker 3: really Kakuchi recently. But that's really not on the level
- 18:45Speaker 3: that we're talking about.
- 18:46Speaker 1: No, not at all. And now you have to wonder
- 18:48Speaker 1: how many some of these guys are signing before they
- 18:50Speaker 1: get the free agency. The'll be interesting how many of
- 18:53Speaker 1: these pitchers are even going to be available over the
- 18:54Speaker 1: next few years. From Steven Smith, one of our regular viewers,
- 18:59Speaker 1: thank you Stephen Mark, how do hitters go about recognizing pitches?
- 19:05Speaker 1: I've heard you refer to pitchers tipping with their gloves
- 19:07Speaker 1: and some references to arm angles giving information away. Are
- 19:11Speaker 1: there other things that might factor in as well?
- 19:16Speaker 3: To not go forty five minutes, I will try. I
- 19:20Speaker 3: think for hitters, it starts with getting enough reps to
- 19:25Speaker 3: even know what pitches what, and it took me a
- 19:28Speaker 3: long time. I remember when I first signed, I had
- 19:32Speaker 3: no approach at all, and I was, as we talked
- 19:34Speaker 3: about in the last episode, a pitcher first out of
- 19:37Speaker 3: high school and transition to hitting. I remember facing Kerry
- 19:41Speaker 3: Wood and would have been extended spring training and hacked
- 19:46Speaker 3: at three breaking balls that we may have landed in
- 19:48Speaker 3: the grass and just no clue. He had to be
- 19:52Speaker 3: laughing his rear off.
- 19:54Speaker 2: But I didn't.
- 19:55Speaker 3: I didn't know how to attack anything, especially sliders too
- 20:00Speaker 3: for a couple of Triple A guys up and down
- 20:03Speaker 3: major league guys, and I was like, I'm never going
- 20:05Speaker 3: to hit that pitch in my life. What I had
- 20:07Speaker 3: to realize was, first of all, it wasn't a strike.
- 20:11Speaker 3: I wasn't trying to hit it to the right part
- 20:13Speaker 3: of the field, and I needed to get a whole
- 20:16Speaker 3: lot more selective, and that just took repetitions. Now, as
- 20:19Speaker 3: far as pitchers given away stuff, the big glove is
- 20:21Speaker 3: the easiest. If we're talking about pitch tipping, that generally
- 20:24Speaker 3: happens when the pitcher has a changeup grip or something else.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Ryan Dempster is a guy that you know if you've
- 20:31Speaker 3: watched baseball for a while. He wiggled his glove to
- 20:34Speaker 3: try and disguise that split finger grip. So when he
- 20:37Speaker 3: was wiggling it could be to accommodate that grip. It
- 20:39Speaker 3: could also be a fastball in that he was throwing
- 20:43Speaker 3: as well. I think there's a few Angel guys, maybe
- 20:47Speaker 3: alde Gary Bremner, that could do.
- 20:51Speaker 2: A little better job.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Now I'm somebody who Tory Hunter was excellent out at
- 20:56Speaker 3: Albert Pools was excellent. I was kind of tutored to
- 20:59Speaker 3: notice these things. Craig Graybeck was was outstanding, and I
- 21:02Speaker 3: was too young to really know what he was saying,
- 21:04Speaker 3: but he was a hawk. And if they're going to
- 21:07Speaker 3: give you the information, I'm going to take it. And Okay,
- 21:10Speaker 3: one pitcher that's now commentating on one of the streaming platforms,
- 21:16Speaker 3: you know, but for.
- 21:17Speaker 2: A while he was throwing.
- 21:19Speaker 3: I didn't realize, but Paul Goldsmith filled me and nobody's playing.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Well, Paul's still playing, but it doesn't matter.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Adam was throwing his one pitch from one side of
- 21:27Speaker 3: the rubber and the other pitch from the other side
- 21:29Speaker 3: of the rubber, and for some reason I hadn't picked
- 21:33Speaker 3: up on that. When I saw it, I was saying,
- 21:34Speaker 3: you got to be kidding me, you know. It was
- 21:39Speaker 3: it was like, how is he this is getting away
- 21:41Speaker 3: with murder?
- 21:41Speaker 2: Now?
- 21:42Speaker 3: He had really nice stuff for right, It was very
- 21:44Speaker 3: uncomfortable at bat, but it made it easier. It made
- 21:46Speaker 3: it easier so I could at least lay off the
- 21:49Speaker 3: slider a little bit, you know, with ease as opposed
- 21:53Speaker 3: to just thinking everything's the same. So sometimes you don't
- 21:56Speaker 3: see the ball at all. Sometimes got guys like smile
- 22:01Speaker 3: and stuff, weird stuff you've just got to really watch.
- 22:03Speaker 3: And if your head is buried watching your own mechanics
- 22:07Speaker 3: from your previous at bat, you're not going to see
- 22:09Speaker 3: any of these these things. So I like to sit
- 22:11Speaker 3: on the top rail and if guys did that, and
- 22:15Speaker 3: then the last thing I'll say is the arm slot.
- 22:18Speaker 3: If a guy some of these things are imperceptible. You
- 22:20Speaker 3: can't always put your finger on what is going on
- 22:22Speaker 3: or what you're looking at. But if you're going to
- 22:24Speaker 3: give me an eight degree difference, we've talked about story Ono,
- 22:28Speaker 3: even the worst hitter can notice something, and it's one
- 22:31Speaker 3: of those things where it's kind of the subconscious, but
- 22:33Speaker 3: you might keep your hands back or your weight back,
- 22:36Speaker 3: whatever you want to call it a tad bit longer
- 22:39Speaker 3: because you're like man that he kind of does this
- 22:41Speaker 3: every time on the off speed and then on the fastball.
- 22:45Speaker 2: If you're giving away when a fastball.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Is coming, good luck, because that most most every big
- 22:52Speaker 3: league hitter, if they know it's coming, can turn it around.
- 22:54Speaker 3: So I can get more into this on other episodes,
- 22:57Speaker 3: but we got a few other questions. Hopefully that made
- 22:59Speaker 3: a little bit of.
- 23:00Speaker 1: All right, Hey, we're gonna take one more quick break

- 24:08Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 24:10Speaker 1: Mike D. Givana. Next question from rally Monkey one. The
- 24:14Speaker 1: Angels clearly favored contact hitters over power hitters and last
- 24:18Speaker 1: weekend's draft. Do you think this shift is specific to
- 24:21Speaker 1: the Angels under new GM John Mozelock or does it
- 24:25Speaker 1: reflect a wider shift in the game away from an
- 24:29Speaker 1: emphasis on power in launch angle and more toward contact
- 24:33Speaker 1: and fewer strikeouts. Wow, that's a good question. I'm not sure.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I haven't answer to that. I can only say that
- 24:40Speaker 1: I hope it is a shift in the game away
- 24:44Speaker 1: from power and launch angle. Uh. You know, they're always
- 24:48Speaker 1: trying to inject more action in the games. Even a
- 24:52Speaker 1: lot of the you know, the time clock, the shifts,
- 24:55Speaker 1: a lot of the lot of the changes we've seen
- 24:57Speaker 1: pretty dramatic changes over the last few years are there
- 25:01Speaker 1: to speed up the game, but also to get more
- 25:03Speaker 1: action in the game. And I just think from a
- 25:05Speaker 1: fans perspective, when you're walking, when you're striking out and
- 25:09Speaker 1: home runs are great, but those other true outcomes are
- 25:11Speaker 1: just pretty darn boring. And we've mentioned it on this
- 25:14Speaker 1: show before. I think, you know, a solo home run
- 25:18Speaker 1: is a solo homer, and that's great. But when you
- 25:20Speaker 1: put two guys on with maybe a a beat out,
- 25:23Speaker 1: an infield single, putting in the gap, and then you
- 25:25Speaker 1: hit a home run, you know, that's how you put
- 25:28Speaker 1: pressure on opposing pitches. That's how you drive their pitch
- 25:30Speaker 1: counts up, that's how you make them work. And I
- 25:34Speaker 1: think I think that's what makes the game a little
- 25:36Speaker 1: more interesting. What do you think, Mark?
- 25:39Speaker 2: I agree.
- 25:40Speaker 3: I think that pitching is most definitely evolved. They know
- 25:44Speaker 3: what they're doing, they have it down to a science.
- 25:47Speaker 3: I've heard this from many many people. Doesn't mean it's
- 25:50Speaker 3: always going to work, no, but at least the understanding
- 25:53Speaker 3: of how to teach pitches. They have the cameras. I mean,
- 25:57Speaker 3: it's crazy the technology. The hitting side still have figured
- 26:01Speaker 3: out much, and I don't know if they ever will.
- 26:03Speaker 3: You have the kves for sequencing, you have the trajet machines,
- 26:08Speaker 3: you have all this stuff, and hitting still going one way.
- 26:11Speaker 3: So how are they gonna How is the game going
- 26:13Speaker 3: to combat these The pitchers that have they're throwing harder,
- 26:17Speaker 3: the movement's nastier, and maybe goofing with the baseballs.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Again, I'm not sure, but.
- 26:23Speaker 3: I think that there are people are coming around to
- 26:25Speaker 3: the idea that the launch angle swings may not be
- 26:31Speaker 3: the best formula to combat these nasty pictures. Too much
- 26:35Speaker 3: swing and miss, as you said, and ultimately, this is
- 26:38Speaker 3: an entertainment business, and if the product gets stale, I mean,
- 26:42Speaker 3: I don't watch any NBA basketball, used to watch a lot,
- 26:44Speaker 3: but from what I understand, just tucking up threes a lot. Now,
- 26:50Speaker 3: maybe you watch I know you I do not soccer
- 26:55Speaker 3: then uh the world yeah, yeah, as do millions, billions
- 27:01Speaker 3: of others. But in the NBA, you know, it's gone
- 27:03Speaker 3: to an analytical game. A lot of three pointers doesn't
- 27:06Speaker 3: probably resemble what I liked with the Robert Ory and
- 27:08Speaker 3: the Lakers. But if the fans start to if it
- 27:13Speaker 3: gets boring, you know, fourteen strikeouts, that's not fun to watch.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I don't.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I don't like to watch for that.
- 27:18Speaker 3: That's not triples in the gap, that's not stolen bases,
- 27:21Speaker 3: it's not Oh the Angels did try and sack punt
- 27:23Speaker 3: the other day, other goosebun another you know, interesting attempt,
- 27:27Speaker 3: a little stabby was in the air. Fortunately didn't get caught.
- 27:30Speaker 3: But uh yeah, the game shifting. I like it. I mean,
- 27:34Speaker 3: I don't know, despite what I was somebody had asked me,
- 27:37Speaker 3: I think in the YouTube comments. I like watching pure hitters.
- 27:40Speaker 3: I like watching high average hitters. I always have tried
- 27:44Speaker 3: to be one myself to the best of my ability.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Didn't always shake.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Out that way, and I was called on to do,
- 27:50Speaker 3: you know, some different things. So I like where it's going.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I like it's clearly a shifting.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I mean, you don't.
- 27:56Speaker 3: You don't draft guys with contact oriented approaches one after
- 28:00Speaker 3: to the next if you're not signaling something all right?
- 28:04Speaker 1: From Halo, Susie and Tustin. Mike, on a recent episode,
- 28:06Speaker 1: you said Donovan Walton was providing the highest at bat
- 28:10Speaker 1: quality on the team. Guilty, And a few days later,
- 28:14Speaker 1: when Mike Trout returned, he was designated for insignment and
- 28:17Speaker 1: signed with the Athletics. What gives, good question? Uh? What
- 28:22Speaker 1: gave was? I think when Mike Trout came back to
- 28:25Speaker 1: this hamstring injury, whether he uh, regardless of what he
- 28:30Speaker 1: says publicly about wanting to play center field, I think
- 28:32Speaker 1: the Angels are. I think it's pretty clear they're going
- 28:34Speaker 1: to pace him in the second half. They're gonna give
- 28:36Speaker 1: him more DH days, more days off. And you know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: they wanted to keep the right handed bat and Jose
- 28:43Speaker 1: Siri and they need another outfielder and Donovan Walton does
- 28:46Speaker 1: not play the outfield. I hated to see him go.
- 28:50Speaker 1: The other thing I think they're looking at is I
- 28:52Speaker 1: think Donovan is what thirty five years old, so he's
- 28:56Speaker 1: oh thirty two, Okay, so not as old as I thought.
- 28:59Speaker 1: But still, you know, on the other side of thirty,
- 29:01Speaker 1: you can't look at a guy like that and say, oh,
- 29:03Speaker 1: is this guy in our long term plans? Probably not.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I just thought he was a really really nice looking
- 29:09Speaker 1: hitter and fit the kind of the mold of the
- 29:11Speaker 1: guys were just talking about contact, you know, tough at bats,
- 29:16Speaker 1: you know, gap to gap with a little pop, and
- 29:21Speaker 1: I was, I was. I was sorry to see him go.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I think he brought a lot to this team when
- 29:25Speaker 1: he when he played. Not the greatest defense or defensive player,
- 29:29Speaker 1: I'll admit that, but offensively, he was bringing a lot
- 29:32Speaker 1: to the table, and he thought smart, he was.
- 29:36Speaker 3: He was putting together arguably the best another unheralded outfielders
- 29:42Speaker 3: has been.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Yeah, hitting pretty well too, for sure.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I think it's the age thing. The agent curve,
- 29:50Speaker 3: thirty two years old, I'm not probably out of options
- 29:54Speaker 3: almost certainly, so, if not, I don't know. They were
- 29:58Speaker 3: probably hoping that he would, I guess, sneak through the
- 30:00Speaker 3: waiver process and go back into the organization. But that
- 30:03Speaker 3: would be a little awkward too, because it's like, I mean,
- 30:06Speaker 3: I was crushing for you, so it came down to
- 30:10Speaker 3: long term plans, question Mark, and they preferred I assume Perrazza,
- 30:17Speaker 3: even though I mean, he's got to find some hits
- 30:19Speaker 3: over this All Star break or find this find the stroke,
- 30:21Speaker 3: because he it's it's ugly, and I think he's at
- 30:26Speaker 3: is wrapping a little bit too much, meaning his barrels
- 30:28Speaker 3: pointing towards the pitcher, and he's not he's not squaring
- 30:34Speaker 3: up the pitches. He needs to square up like he
- 30:36Speaker 3: was earlier. So I'd like to see an adjustment from
- 30:38Speaker 3: him again, a guy that's maybe a trade target, why
- 30:41Speaker 3: you'd hold on to him over Bolton?
- 30:46Speaker 1: All right, here's one from Biff Ball and Lakita. Always
- 30:48Speaker 1: good to hear from Biff. Our five innings starts really
- 30:51Speaker 1: providing value to big league clubs. Seems like the best
- 30:54Speaker 1: teams have multiple guys capable of going six innings or more.
- 30:58Speaker 1: But it is a hero feet to see a Halo
- 31:01Speaker 1: do it once a week. Uh you want to you
- 31:05Speaker 1: want to take a stab at this one, Mark.
- 31:09Speaker 2: It's what.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Guys are doing these days, and maybe what they mentally
- 31:15Speaker 3: think is asked of them as well, which would be
- 31:18Speaker 3: the problem I would have.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I know that guy like Weave.
- 31:21Speaker 3: I think he said on the interview I did with him,
- 31:25Speaker 3: he took a lot of pride in telling the bullpen, hey,
- 31:28Speaker 3: you guys, you know, take it easy today. Didn't mean
- 31:31Speaker 3: he was going nine inn's, no, but the mentality was
- 31:34Speaker 3: that he was at least seven eight. I think seven
- 31:39Speaker 3: was was what guys like him I really wanted to
- 31:43Speaker 3: take a lot of pride because that you're really only
- 31:46Speaker 3: having you're in your eighth inning guy and your closer
- 31:49Speaker 3: by that point. Now, with a fit five inning start
- 31:52Speaker 3: or less than a five inning start, you're going to
- 31:55Speaker 3: someone is going to be overexposed out there. Who it
- 31:58Speaker 3: is depends, and then the next day they're probably going
- 32:01Speaker 3: to be down because they threw forty pitches covering two
- 32:04Speaker 3: and a third or whatever it is. So I don't
- 32:08Speaker 3: I'm sure the analytics scream, don't let these starting pitchers
- 32:11Speaker 3: see the opposing hitters a third time through the order.
- 32:16Speaker 3: And if the numbers say that, then you know somebody's
- 32:19Speaker 3: going to have to figure that problem out. But the
- 32:21Speaker 3: best pictures, this is why I've talked about the need
- 32:23Speaker 3: for a third pitch. When you have a guy a
- 32:27Speaker 3: sure aser Curshaw, you know, on these guys you don't
- 32:32Speaker 3: always see that third pitch until the third at bat,
- 32:35Speaker 3: and that's when they will start to sprinkle in that
- 32:38Speaker 3: extra offering that is usually at least adequate if not.
- 32:41Speaker 3: You know, a good pitch and these guys will rely
- 32:44Speaker 3: on it. This is the old school approach. But the
- 32:46Speaker 3: fastball early on in the game and try and see
- 32:48Speaker 3: how far that can take them. Now, I mean the
- 32:51Speaker 3: biggest shift to me was in spring training. I get
- 32:53Speaker 3: there completely out of shape timing wise, and guys are
- 32:57Speaker 3: spinning hammer breaking balls and I'm just like, well, thank
- 33:00Speaker 3: you for giving me a look like, I mean, you
- 33:02Speaker 3: could lay a meat ball in there and I'm probably
- 33:04Speaker 3: not going to hit it. So it's gone to a
- 33:07Speaker 3: different style. It's tough to hit, Yes, it is tough
- 33:10Speaker 3: to hit, but why aren't pitchers. It's also you got
- 33:15Speaker 3: to you got to match, you know, fifteen pitches or
- 33:17Speaker 3: less than inning. If you go for the punch till
- 33:19Speaker 3: the bitter end, your pitches are going to be up there.
- 33:21Speaker 3: I highlighted one of the potential draft picks a slider monster.
- 33:25Speaker 3: You know, the Angels throw more off speed than any
- 33:27Speaker 3: pitch pitching staff in the game. We highlighted that before
- 33:30Speaker 3: it's still is the case. You spinning balls over and
- 33:33Speaker 3: over and over. Those balls are usually not you know
- 33:36Speaker 3: how many guys landing for strikes? Not too many, and
- 33:38Speaker 3: the Angels have a lot of short starts. How about
- 33:40Speaker 3: how about your thoughts?
- 33:41Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 33:42Speaker 1: I think a five innings start, if you're emptying the tank,
- 33:46Speaker 1: maybe striking out a lot of guys, driving your pitch
- 33:48Speaker 1: count up, and you give up zero one run, I
- 33:51Speaker 1: think that can provide value every now and then. But
- 33:55Speaker 1: when you are limited to five innings over and over
- 33:58Speaker 1: and over again, you are domino effect. We see it
- 34:02Speaker 1: all the time. It takes a toe in the bullpen.
- 34:05Speaker 1: All of a sudden, you're using Silseth and Bachmann in
- 34:08Speaker 1: the six and seventh inn of maybe a close game,
- 34:11Speaker 1: and then the game gets away from you, and then
- 34:13Speaker 1: you've lost, and you've already used Bachman and sil Seth
- 34:16Speaker 1: and Zephyr John maybe even as well. So unless you
- 34:19Speaker 1: have a bullpen like the Dodgers had in twenty twenty
- 34:23Speaker 1: four when they won the World Series with basically two
- 34:25Speaker 1: and a half starting pitchers, you're not going to get
- 34:27Speaker 1: away with that. The Angels especially are not going to
- 34:30Speaker 1: get away with that. Because their bullpen, while improved in
- 34:35Speaker 1: some areas, is not deep enough to carry that kind
- 34:40Speaker 1: of physical burden. So it just it comes back to
- 34:46Speaker 1: bite you all the time. And yeah, so that's how
- 34:50Speaker 1: I feel about them. Mark. Final question from Shana Wow
- 34:54Speaker 1: twenty six on X Guys with the Bees now in
- 34:59Speaker 1: their new day Break Ballpark, still sitting at that high
- 35:02Speaker 1: elevation in Salt Lake City or actually Salt Lake Valley,
- 35:06Speaker 1: I guess is Salt Lakes still a legitimate problem for
- 35:09Speaker 1: the Angels when it comes to developing talent and getting
- 35:11Speaker 1: accurate performance evaluations. Does the hitter friendly thin air inflate
- 35:16Speaker 1: prospects stats too much, especially for pitchers? And how should
- 35:21Speaker 1: the front office be adjusting for it when making promotion decisions?
- 35:25Speaker 1: That is one loaded question. I'm gonna let Mark take
- 35:28Speaker 1: it because he not only played in Salt Lake, he
- 35:30Speaker 1: played in the big leagues. And you see the numbers,
- 35:33Speaker 1: and we always see that look down your face when
- 35:37Speaker 1: you're talking about Triple A numbers and Salt Lakes as
- 35:42Speaker 1: guilty as any of these fields and locales for Triple
- 35:46Speaker 1: A ball.
- 35:49Speaker 3: I think it was really eye opening with Ryan Divish
- 35:53Speaker 3: on one of our episodes.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Yeah, is Walworth.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Going back and revisiting, somebody said, a great episode Mariners
- 36:00Speaker 3: Territory or whatever. You know what, it's a good baseball episode.
- 36:04Speaker 2: It was.
- 36:05Speaker 3: It didn't shatter any records, but for views, but I'm
- 36:08Speaker 3: very I was very I thought the insights on there
- 36:11Speaker 3: were as good as it gets. The Mariners, for example,
- 36:13Speaker 3: they don't like to send their pitching prospects to Tacoma
- 36:17Speaker 3: the PCL. Why because it doesn't make any of their
- 36:21Speaker 3: pitchers better. You're gonna need to have guys go there.
- 36:25Speaker 3: I don't know if those guys think less of themselves
- 36:28Speaker 3: or some of the uber prospects.
- 36:31Speaker 2: It is what it is.
- 36:31Speaker 3: They're better, you know, it's reality, and they're gonna they're
- 36:35Speaker 3: gonna take care of those guys. I think the conundrum
- 36:38Speaker 3: for the Angels and for the fans, and especially with
- 36:41Speaker 3: the social media. And it's no fault. I could understand
- 36:45Speaker 3: promoting your club, but every BS game looks like, you know,
- 36:50Speaker 3: they hit seven homers and the guy went, you know,
- 36:53Speaker 3: seven for four with a it's just it's so you
- 36:58Speaker 3: can't make any sense of it.
- 37:00Speaker 2: And seven hit some four backs joking.
- 37:01Speaker 1: But.
- 37:03Speaker 3: These numbers, how do they correlate? How do you dull
- 37:08Speaker 3: them down. There's some formulas people have tried to do
- 37:10Speaker 3: it before.
- 37:11Speaker 2: I was.
- 37:12Speaker 3: One thing I disagreed with when I was coming up
- 37:14Speaker 3: was that, I don't know, it was a hard subtraction
- 37:17Speaker 3: of if you hit this here, you're going to hit
- 37:19Speaker 3: this in the major leagues. And I don't really believe
- 37:21Speaker 3: that's true. My numbers didn't have incredibly dramatic shift. And
- 37:29Speaker 3: it also can kind of present this thought that, hey,
- 37:32Speaker 3: the big leagues is really tough.
- 37:33Speaker 2: You might you might not be up for you. I
- 37:35Speaker 2: don't know.
- 37:36Speaker 3: I didn't like that at all. I think that you've
- 37:38Speaker 3: got to trust that you're going to get there. Yes,
- 37:40Speaker 3: the numbers probably are not going to be the same.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Some guys guys actually improve. It's rare, but it happens
- 37:46Speaker 3: on the pitching side. If you see a guy doing
- 37:50Speaker 3: big things, I mean, it really stands out because the
- 37:53Speaker 3: majority of the time those eras, I mean a five
- 37:55Speaker 3: might be well above average and it just doesn't look
- 37:59Speaker 3: like it looks like, well, not good, what's going on?
- 38:06Speaker 3: Is this guy getting rocked? But it's league wide statistics.
- 38:10Speaker 3: I think actually in the PCL of four era is outstanding.
- 38:14Speaker 3: So if you see anything around there the guys really
- 38:17Speaker 3: getting it done. It wasn't that way when I played
- 38:21Speaker 3: in Salt Lake. I put up a nice season, the
- 38:25Speaker 3: thirty six and one four. I think I hit around
- 38:27Speaker 3: three hundred. So yes, it was hit her friendly, but
- 38:31Speaker 3: I don't remember missing a ton of balls that went out,
- 38:35Speaker 3: Whereas in like playing against the Rockies, there were a
- 38:37Speaker 3: couple of real cheapies playing against the Arrangers in the
- 38:40Speaker 3: old ballparks, some real cheatys playing in the cal League
- 38:44Speaker 3: as a joke, like like Modesto and Lancaster. The wind
- 38:48Speaker 3: were just roaring out of these short arts. So but
- 38:53Speaker 3: Salt Lake was one of the most enjoyable places I've
- 38:56Speaker 3: ever played too. Great city, very under the radar, you know,
- 39:02Speaker 3: the fans were into it. We had a nice place
- 39:04Speaker 3: to live, didn't break the bank, Like three or four
- 39:07Speaker 3: of us living together.
- 39:08Speaker 2: That was quite common. I don't know what they do now, but.
- 39:12Speaker 3: And it was just it was a It was a
- 39:14Speaker 3: weird thing because putting up big numbers, and at least
- 39:19Speaker 3: the weird in the sense now evaluating some of these
- 39:21Speaker 3: guys and Christian Moore comes to mind, I mean, just
- 39:25Speaker 3: it looks like he's dominating that level, and then it's
- 39:27Speaker 3: not translating, so I know you gave this one to me.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Do you have any thoughts? Ski? You got to yeah.
- 39:32Speaker 1: I think for offensive players, especially the inflated numbers create
- 39:36Speaker 1: unrealistic expectations for the fans. And but as far as pitching,
- 39:43Speaker 1: I think I think front offices are well aware of,
- 39:46Speaker 1: you know, the atmosphere conditions in some of these places,
- 39:48Speaker 1: and there's so much reliance now even on the draft,
- 39:52Speaker 1: as we've seen with amateur players. On analytics, they can
- 39:57Speaker 1: measure the spin rates and maybe they'll be a little
- 39:59Speaker 1: different at aut the but they look at the shapes
- 40:01Speaker 1: of pitches, they look at velocity, they're looking at arm angles,
- 40:04Speaker 1: release points, you know, how a guy is holding up
- 40:07Speaker 1: physically over certain number of pitches or innings. And I
- 40:10Speaker 1: think that's how they evaluate players. And I don't know
- 40:13Speaker 1: that you know, most front offices are just left in
- 40:16Speaker 1: the dark, wondering, oh, this guy hit three point thirty
- 40:19Speaker 1: with you know, twenty bombs in the first half at
- 40:21Speaker 1: Salt Eke. He comes up here and he can't hit anything.
- 40:24Speaker 1: I don't think they're fulled that way. I think they know,
- 40:27Speaker 1: you know, you hear it often when guys come up
- 40:30Speaker 1: Oh maybe his numbers weren't that great, but we felt
- 40:32Speaker 1: he was, you know, his quality contact was good. Maybe
- 40:35Speaker 1: his line drive rate, his barrel rate is really good.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Maybe his velo or is good. So there, there's so
- 40:43Speaker 1: many other ways to measure the game then just peer
- 40:47Speaker 1: numbers and stats traditional stats right now, and I think
- 40:50Speaker 1: that's how the front offices are handling it. I don't know.
- 40:54Speaker 3: I wonder if the on the heading side, so like,
- 40:58Speaker 3: if there was one stat that I I hate, batting average,
- 41:01Speaker 3: might be trying to translate some of the salt Lake numbers.
- 41:05Speaker 3: The home runs. It seems like a guy's hit a
- 41:07Speaker 3: lot of them, but like Rada is an interesting one,
- 41:11Speaker 3: he's not why, I don't know why. I have a
- 41:14Speaker 3: little more confidence that he will translate better because he's
- 41:18Speaker 3: having somewhat of a mundane See he's not lighting the
- 41:21Speaker 3: world on fire. He's having a nice season. He's very young,
- 41:24Speaker 3: but it just seems like it looks more normal. And
- 41:29Speaker 3: you kind of wonder too, you know, if a guys
- 41:30Speaker 3: used to just you know, dominating, and then there is
- 41:35Speaker 3: kind of a reaver of effect when you get up here,
- 41:37Speaker 3: and you know, maybe it's the opposite. Now, young Guzman
- 41:41Speaker 3: is learning, he ran into some pitches. He's generally doing
- 41:44Speaker 3: damage earlier in the count, and he's got some holes
- 41:46Speaker 3: in the swing. The ops is I think south of
- 41:49Speaker 3: seven hundred, but he's played nice defense, which is maybe
- 41:52Speaker 3: the big deciding factor for a young player. Do you
- 41:55Speaker 3: stick or do you go a nice defense. It looks
- 41:58Speaker 3: like Christian Moore is no longer playing any left field
- 42:00Speaker 3: in Salt Lake either, so maybe on another episode you
- 42:04Speaker 3: can kind of get into what the plan.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Is for that young man.
- 42:07Speaker 1: All right, we're going to close the show with that. Hey,
- 42:09Speaker 1: thank you to all the fans who submitted questions from
