- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:04I hope you all had a fun and restful weekend and that you
- 0:07feel strong heading into Monday. I seriously cannot get over how
- 0:11fast February has been flying by, and the fact that it's
- 0:16almost over is just mind blowing.
- 0:18But today we're going to be reading in First Thessalonians
- 0:22chapter 2, verses 13 through 16. This passage is really steady,
- 0:27but I believe it brings a lot of just great points for us to
- 0:32remember, especially heading into a new week.
- 0:34So with that, let's go ahead and read it.
- 0:36We're going to be in verse 13, and we also thank God
- 0:41continually because when you received the Word of God, which
- 0:45you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as
- 0:50it actually is the Word of God, which is indeed at work.
- 0:54And you who believe for you, brothers and sisters, became
- 0:59imitators of God's churches in Judea, which are in Christ
- 1:03Jesus. You suffered from your own
- 1:06people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews
- 1:10who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us
- 1:14out. They displease God and are
- 1:17hostile to everyone in their effort to keep us from speaking
- 1:21to the Gentiles so that they may be saved.
- 1:24In this way they also heap up their sins to the limit.
- 1:29The wrath of God has come upon them at last.
- 1:35OK, so the first point that I want to make is Paul starts by
- 1:40saying that he continually gives thanks to God for them.
- 1:43This is constant. It's not occasionally, it's not
- 1:47just when things are easy or when prayers are answered the
- 1:50way that we hope. And so these believers, we see
- 1:55that they're being persecuted, but there's still Thanksgiving
- 1:58amidst that persecution, which made me think, what is our
- 2:03gratitude tied down to? Because if it's tied to maybe
- 2:09being healthy or being in the relationship that we want,
- 2:13having enough money and finances, maybe even just being
- 2:17included in events or friend groups when life is going
- 2:23smoothly, if that's what it's tied down to, then ultimately
- 2:27it's fragile. And here is just a really
- 2:32important thing to reflect on. If the only thing that God ever
- 2:36did for you was rescue from eternal separation, you'll that
- 2:41would still be enough to live a life of Thanksgiving.
- 2:45I know it's heavy, it's weighty, but it's true.
- 2:49Because He saved us from death and it was free to us, though it
- 2:54cost Him His one and only Son. So a thankful heart is not
- 3:00forced. It's a natural response of
- 3:02someone who understands and grasps what they've been rescued
- 3:07from. Now also, the word of God is not
- 3:11passive. Paul says that he's thankful
- 3:15because they did not receive the message as the word of men, but
- 3:19as what it really is, the Word of God, which is at work in
- 3:24those who believe. Notice the phrase at work we see
- 3:29all throughout the Bible, specifically Hebrews 412.
- 3:34It says that the word of God is living and active and discerns
- 3:38the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
- 3:40Second Timothy 316 All scripture is God breathed and useful for
- 3:44teaching, rebuking, correcting and training and righteousness.
- 3:50Those are all present tense verbs.
- 3:53So the Bible is not just an old religious book with suggestions.
- 4:00It is, quite literally, the living voice of a holy God.
- 4:05But here's what I don't want us to miss.
- 4:07It works in those who believe, not just in those who hear it.
- 4:13And there's a difference between plainly hearing something and
- 4:18actually accepting it. I want us to think about, OK,
- 4:23you're hearing from a friend about their trip.
- 4:26They're telling you the details of that, but you weren't
- 4:29actually there. But then think about if you were
- 4:31actually on that trip. One is passive and one you are
- 4:37actually connected to, and it changes you because you have
- 4:41those memories. So we go from hearing, to then
- 4:45accepting, to them believing, and then to living it out.
- 4:50But here's a question that honestly convicted me.
- 4:55How much of my Bible reading has actually changed me?
- 5:00If someone watched your life for a few days for this week, could
- 5:05they tell you believe what you say you believe?
- 5:09Because it is possible to read scripture every single day and
- 5:14still stay unchanged if you're only consuming it and not
- 5:18surrendering to it. And for me personally, in my
- 5:23testimony, when I stopped reading, only when I quote, UN
- 5:27quote felt like it. And when I started consistently
- 5:30staying in the word and letting it rebuke me and teach me and
- 5:36correct me and not just doing it when it was convenient.
- 5:41I was never the same after that because it completely
- 5:44transformed me and is still transforming me today.
- 5:48So think if Jesus was physically teaching in your city today like
- 5:54He is in a building in a church and you knew, you say you
- 5:58believe that He is truly the Son of God with all the wisdom and
- 6:02all the knowledge. Wouldn't you rearrange your
- 6:05schedule or prioritize going and seeing Him and hearing from Him
- 6:11because His words are still being spoken through Scripture
- 6:15in the present day? Right now, His Spirit is with us
- 6:20everywhere we are. So no, we don't have His
- 6:24physical body in the room. We can't see, but we have His
- 6:29Word and we have His Spirit and that is everything we need.
- 6:34So moving forward, Paul also says that it was the evidence
- 6:40that they truly believed the Word that was seen in their
- 6:43lives. They imitated other churches,
- 6:47but what did that imitation look like?
- 6:50It looked like suffering. And Romans 817 it alludes to
- 6:55this, that if we share in Christ's suffering, we will also
- 7:00share in his glory. So a lot of the times,
- 7:03opposition, it's not always a sign that you're doing something
- 7:07wrong. It's actually proof that you're
- 7:10becoming more like Jesus because that's what he faced.
- 7:14And opposition will happen. It will occur in your life if
- 7:19you are truly standing up for the truth.
- 7:22These believers, they were being persecuted by their own people,
- 7:26their own friends, their own family, just like Jesus was
- 7:30rejected by his own hometown of Nazareth.
- 7:34So I just want to be totally upfront.
- 7:38A lot of us might not be facing persecution like these.
- 7:44Churches face persecution. We're facing discomfort.
- 7:50Maybe someone thinking that we're weird for being a
- 7:52Christian, someone questioning our convictions or making us
- 7:57feel smaller for saying no to certain things.
- 8:01And we call that persecution y'all.
- 8:04I've had moments where I have kind of toned down my faith so
- 8:09that I would not feel uncomfortable in a room or feel
- 8:12like the odd man out. And honestly, it's in those
- 8:16moments that I look back on that, that conviction, it stings
- 8:19even more. So here's the real heart check
- 8:23for all of us. Are you, are you being silent
- 8:26because you're loving or because you're afraid?
- 8:31Jesus tells us to love our enemies and to pray for those
- 8:35who persecute us. Matthew 544 But loving does not
- 8:41mean shrinking back in fear. And one way or another, you will
- 8:46face opposition. So the question is, will you
- 8:51stand firm? Will you let people who the
- 8:56enemy wants to use? Will you let people keep you
- 9:01from sharing truth that could actually save someone's life,
- 9:04that could bring them salvation and freedom that they need?
- 9:08Because the enemy, he thrives off of your silence.
- 9:13Whenever he can shut you up, that's when he is succeeding.
- 9:17But the word of God, it's at work in you, in you who believe,
- 9:23but it's not working so that you can hide it.
- 9:28Y'all, the Word of God is living, it's active, it's
- 9:32working. So ask yourself, are you letting
- 9:37it? With that, let's go ahead and
- 9:40move into prayer. Father God, thank you for
- 9:48rescuing us. Thank you for salvation and for
- 9:52the knowledge and understanding of that in US who believe.
- 9:58Even if you had done nothing else for us, Jesus, salvation
- 10:03alone by your blood would be enough to to deserve our endless
- 10:09gratitude. So would you just help us to not
- 10:13only hear Your word, but to accept it, to believe it, and to
- 10:18live it? Let it truly be at work in us?
- 10:23Would you provide us with courage when following you feels
- 10:28uncomfortable and foreign? You say in Your word that we're
- 10:32foreigners in this world. This is not our home.
- 10:36And so we need you to give us boldness.
- 10:39Help us to not shrink back from truth.
- 10:43Father, strengthen us to stand firm even when it costs us
- 10:47something. Would you make us people, Your
- 10:52children, whose lives prove that we believe what we're reading in
- 10:57Scripture, may we allow to transform us.
- 11:02We ask this all in your name, Jesus.
- 11:05Amen. OK, well that's what I have
- 11:07today. Praying that the Lord speaks and
- 11:11ministers to your heart personally and that you can take
- 11:15some things away from this. Have a great Monday and I will
- 11:18see y'all on the next episode.
