The Kuomintang’s opposition to Taiwan independence is aimed at “defending the Republic of China as a shield,” using it to block potential conflicts arising from de jure Taiwanese independence, while also serving as a strategic buffer in cross-strait relations with China. However, without the continued existence of the Republic of China as a meaningful political element, this has led many people in Taiwan to perceive the Kuomintang as a Trojan horse.
