Latest / Right Now Hot Takes / The Biggest Drug Price Drop in 60 Years — Promise Kept
Transcript
- 0:04Imagine this, you're 27 years old, you're paying
- 0:08for prescriptions, you're trying to build a life,
- 0:11and the prices that used to feel like a monthly
- 0:13gut punch just posted the biggest drop in over
- 0:1660 years. Not a press release, not a campaign
- 0:20slogan, actual numbers from the data. Welcome
- 0:24to Right Now Hot Takes. I'm Jim Rand. Today,
- 0:27we're talking about something rare in American
- 0:29politics, a clear, measurable win that hits everyday
- 0:33people in the wallet. Prescription drug prices
- 0:36recorded their sharpest year -over -year decline
- 0:38since 1963. The data came out this week. The
- 0:43Washington Post had to report it. Overall, medicinal
- 0:46drug prices fell, and prescription drugs specifically
- 0:49dropped about 3 .1 percent. The White House is
- 0:53pointing to Trump Rx, most favored nation deals
- 0:56with the major manufacturers, and aggressive
- 0:58pressure that forced companies to lower cash
- 1:01prices for American patients. Some analysts will
- 1:04argue about how much credit goes where. Earlier
- 1:07Medicare negotiations, more generics coming online,
- 1:11discount weight loss drugs? Fine. Look at the
- 1:14direction of travel and the timing. For years,
- 1:17the loudest voices on the left told us the only
- 1:19answer was more government control. price controls,
- 1:23single -payer dreams, endless expansion of bureaucracy.
- 1:26They sold it as compassion for the working class
- 1:29and for young people just starting out. The track
- 1:32record was higher costs, shortages in some categories,
- 1:35and less incentive for real innovation. This
- 1:38time something different happened. Pressure.
- 1:41Accountability. Direct deals that force companies
- 1:44to compete on price for American patients instead
- 1:47of treating the US market as the world's piggy
- 1:49bank that subsidizes lower prices everywhere
- 1:52else. Young people feel this. You're the ones
- 1:55starting families, managing student debt, dealing
- 1:58with chronic conditions, or just trying to keep
- 2:00insulin, specialty drugs, or even the new weight
- 2:03loss medications from wrecking your monthly budget.
- 2:06When prices fall meaningfully after decades of
- 2:08relentless increases, that is not abstract. That
- 2:12is breathing room. That is one less reason to
- 2:14put off starting a family or taking a risk on
- 2:17a new job or moving for opportunity. Here's the
- 2:20deeper point. Free enterprise is not perfect.
- 2:23Markets can be messy. Companies will charge what
- 2:26the market will bear if no one pushes back. But
- 2:28markets respond to pressure and incentives in
- 2:31ways central planning never does. When you make
- 2:34it expensive and politically costly to gouge
- 2:36American patients, companies find ways to lower
- 2:39prices. When you threaten tariffs on their products
- 2:42and demand most favored nation terms, deals get
- 2:45made. The socialist approach keeps promising
- 2:48the same thing. Give us more power over the entire
- 2:51system and we'll make it fair. History shows
- 2:54they usually make it scarce, slower, and more
- 2:57expensive in the long run. This drop is a reminder
- 3:00that results matter more than intentions. You
- 3:02can lecture about equity and health care as a
- 3:05human right all day. or you can actually deliver
- 3:08lower prices that show up in the data that families
- 3:10can feel. I love this country because it still
- 3:13has the capacity to correct course when the incentives
- 3:16are right. Ordinary people working, saving, raising
- 3:19kids, they deserve systems that work for them
- 3:22instead of systems that protect the status quo
- 3:24or expand the administrative state. If you're
- 3:27in your 20s and you're being told that free markets
- 3:29are the problem and that only more government
- 3:32can save you, look at the data this week. The
- 3:35biggest drop in six decades did not come from
- 3:37more bureaucracy. It came from pressure that
- 3:40forced real competition and real deals. That's
- 3:43the contrast right now. One side sells control
- 3:46and hopes and keeps expanding the administrative
- 3:48state. The other side can deliver measurable
- 3:50relief when it has the courage to use leverage
- 3:53and stick to results. Keep watching the numbers.
- 3:56Keep demanding results over rhetoric. Keep choosing
- 3:59the system that expands opportunity instead of
- 4:01managing scarcity. If you enjoyed this episode,
