Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on? Everybody. Welcome back into GM territory. On
- 0:04Speaker 1: today's episode, we're going to go over five trades that
- 0:08Speaker 1: we would love to see. Let's get right into it, Alrighty, Jim,
- 0:18Speaker 1: welcome in. Look, there's a lot of trades we would
- 0:22Speaker 1: like to see happen. And full disclaimer, this isn't anything
- 0:25Speaker 1: we've heard yet, but let's give the audience five trades
- 0:28Speaker 1: we'd love to see. Let's start with number one with
- 0:31Speaker 1: George Kirby going to the San Francisco Giants. Mariners return
- 0:36Speaker 1: would be Casey Schmidt, who's been red hot and Eric Miller,
- 0:40Speaker 1: who's been absolutely dealing. Jim, what are your thoughts on
- 0:43Speaker 1: this trade?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Yeah, So from the Seattle Mariners perspective, look, they have
- 0:47Speaker 2: a very deep rotation. They've got six starters right now.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Luis Castilla right now is kind of like that six starter,
- 0:55Speaker 2: and they have two big needs, right They really need
- 0:58Speaker 2: a writing and hitter to help them against let pitching
- 1:00Speaker 2: that they really struggled against. And they could use another
- 1:03Speaker 2: high leverage bullpen reliever here. So this trade, you know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: for Seattle, gets those two big needs that they have.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Casey Schmidt is a guy that has twenty seven home runs.
- 1:15Speaker 2: He's having his breakout season, and he's got positional flexibility right,
- 1:19Speaker 2: he can play second, third, left, right, first, DH, so
- 1:22Speaker 2: the Mariners could put him wherever they think he fits
- 1:25Speaker 2: best on their lineup on any given night. But this
- 1:28Speaker 2: is the lineup that could use a little bolt here,
- 1:30Speaker 2: It could use a little juice, and Casey Schmidt brings that,
- 1:33Speaker 2: and then Miller gives you a lights out guy whose
- 1:35Speaker 2: last eight appearances again giving up a run. So that
- 1:38Speaker 2: would really help them. On the other side, if you're
- 1:41Speaker 2: the Giants, look, you know you're gonna trade Robbie Ray
- 1:43Speaker 2: this trade deadline, right, You're gonna probably trade Tyler Mallley
- 1:46Speaker 2: as well. You're gonna need some starting pitching back. And
- 1:49Speaker 2: George Kirby's a young starter. You control him for the
- 1:52Speaker 2: next couple of years and he can be your number
- 1:54Speaker 2: two starter behind Logan Webb. So it's Seattle using their
- 1:58Speaker 2: death of starting pitch. Remember they'd have Kate Anderson in
- 2:01Speaker 2: the minor leagues that's ready for the big leagues, and
- 2:04Speaker 2: quite frankly, he has as highest stealing as any starter
- 2:07Speaker 2: they have, so they've got the pitching depth. They also
- 2:09Speaker 2: are Ryan Sloan, by the way, and the miners too,
- 2:11Speaker 2: so they have the depth to be able to trade
- 2:13Speaker 2: one of these starters and to be able to get
- 2:15Speaker 2: Schmidt and Miller just seems to make a lot of
- 2:17Speaker 2: sense to me. So I don't know. I kind of
- 2:19Speaker 2: like this deal. Again, as Trey, as you said, you know,
- 2:23Speaker 2: we had no information if Seattle and San Francisco have
- 2:26Speaker 2: even talked about these guys. It's just an idea that
- 2:28Speaker 2: we're throwing out there. But I'd love to know what
- 2:31Speaker 2: our listeners think, I mean, from the Seattle side, from
- 2:33Speaker 2: the San Francisco side. Is it too much on both sides?
- 2:36Speaker 2: I mean? And how would you tweak it? If you
- 2:38Speaker 2: don't like this proposal? What would you do that would
- 2:41Speaker 2: be different, that would fill the needs that both these
- 2:44Speaker 2: teams have right now? That would be my question.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's a great that's a great question to have.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I mean, the only thing that I can think of
- 2:51Speaker 1: is I think Seattle definitely wins in this trade. Like
- 2:54Speaker 1: you mentioned, they've had some issues, you know, hitting left
- 2:57Speaker 1: handed pitching, and with Casey Schmidt that fixes it. And
- 3:01Speaker 1: then again the Giants return, you know, bringing in George Kirby.
- 3:05Speaker 1: The only thing I personally would question is, you know,
- 3:08Speaker 1: are the Giants getting enough for a three seven six
- 3:11Speaker 1: e er type starter in return getting rid of those
- 3:15Speaker 1: two guys? Do you think so?
- 3:17Speaker 2: I'm a Kirby guy, So I mean, I think he's
- 3:19Speaker 2: better than the numbers. The command a control are special
- 3:22Speaker 2: to me, and it's the hardest thing to require, is young,
- 3:26Speaker 2: controllable starting pitching. And I just knowing Buster Posey, the
- 3:30Speaker 2: president of the Giants. You know when he won his
- 3:32Speaker 2: three World Series as a player, he did it with
- 3:34Speaker 2: starting pitching, right. It was let's come Matt Kin and
- 3:38Speaker 2: you know that's how they did it. And I just
- 3:40Speaker 2: feel like if he's going to make a deal like this,
- 3:43Speaker 2: that he's going to continue to work to build that
- 3:45Speaker 2: rotation up after Web and I think Kirby would be
- 3:47Speaker 2: the perfect guy to do it with. So yeah, I mean, interesting,
- 3:50Speaker 2: good point. Let's get to the next deal. What else
- 3:52Speaker 2: do you have?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Force, Yeah, we got another NL in al trade here,
- 3:57Speaker 1: Hunter Goodman going over to the Boston Red Side, Connelly,
- 4:00Speaker 1: Early Kis and Witherspoon, Marcela Meyer and Carlos Vayaz who
- 4:06Speaker 1: that's a pretty big return the Rockies are getting. Jim
- 4:08Speaker 1: Tell me your thoughts here.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yeah, So, I mean, first of all, everyone's you know,
- 4:13Speaker 2: Rocky fans are going to go why would we trade
- 4:14Speaker 2: our only All Star from the last two years? Why
- 4:16Speaker 2: would we trade the best player we have? And the
- 4:20Speaker 2: only answer that I can give you is based on
- 4:22Speaker 2: past experience. When I was a young executive back in
- 4:26Speaker 2: the in the nineties, in the eighties, not even the nineties,
- 4:29Speaker 2: the eighties, I was with the Pittsburgh Pirates and we
- 4:33Speaker 2: took our best player, a perennial All Star, and catcher
- 4:36Speaker 2: Tony Payan the biggest asset we had, and we turned
- 4:40Speaker 2: him into three different major league players that helped us win.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Centerfielder Andy Vans like a Gold Glove defender, Mike LaVall
- 4:48Speaker 2: you're a catcher, and Mike Dunn a pitcher. And that
- 4:51Speaker 2: was one of the trades that turned a last place
- 4:53Speaker 2: team into a perennial contender. We had to trade our
- 4:57Speaker 2: best player to do it. And if you're the Rock,
- 5:00Speaker 2: he's it's something you have to consider. Look, I know
- 5:02Speaker 2: you don't want to trade Goodman, I get it, But
- 5:04Speaker 2: in this deal, what if you're getting two starting pitchers
- 5:07Speaker 2: back that can help you win. What if this trade
- 5:11Speaker 2: solves shortstop or second base with you in Marcelo Meyer,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and you're getting a catcher back to fill the spot
- 5:17Speaker 2: for Goodman. I mean, look, I'm not sure these are
- 5:20Speaker 2: the exact prospects alignment. And you know, by the way
- 5:23Speaker 2: early he's on the injured list right now, so not
- 5:26Speaker 2: even sure he'd be included. But the concept is there,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and it's the Rockies trading their best player to get
- 5:34Speaker 2: four players back to give them better chance to win
- 5:36Speaker 2: long term. And if you're Boston, look you've got one
- 5:41Speaker 2: of the top pitching staffs in baseball. You know, you've
- 5:43Speaker 2: had a great winning streak here right now at the
- 5:46Speaker 2: season and you're in the playoffs, but you desperately need
- 5:48Speaker 2: one more bat. Hunne Goodman can be that bat. That's
- 5:53Speaker 2: that impact bat you're looking for. So Rockies are rebuilding,
- 5:57Speaker 2: they get four pieces back Red Sox. You know they
- 6:02Speaker 2: trade quantity for that quality guy. So anyway, that's the
- 6:05Speaker 2: thing and behind it. What are your thoughts on that deal.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I think this is my favorite deal out of all
- 6:10Speaker 1: of these. Like lit, the Red Sox need, they need
- 6:14Speaker 1: a bat behind the plate, and Hunter Goodman is that answer?
- 6:16Speaker 1: I like that you mentioned how he's controllable for a
- 6:19Speaker 1: couple more years. Look, he has almost thirty home runs currently,
- 6:24Speaker 1: you know, having that control through twenty twenty nine, this
- 6:28Speaker 1: is like the win. Now we're in it. We're fighting
- 6:30Speaker 1: move that I think they need to make, and I
- 6:32Speaker 1: think it's a win win for Colorado.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Todd father, are you hitting some games this summer?
- 6:36Speaker 2: What's the deal? Of course?
- 6:38Speaker 4: And it's real simple, Scotty Braun. You know how it is.

- 7:34Speaker 1: I want to switch gears here and talk about Freddy
- 7:37Speaker 1: Peralta getting traded to the San Diego Padres. I thought
- 7:41Speaker 1: this was a pretty interesting deal myself. It's just a
- 7:45Speaker 1: straight up one for one Peralta to the Padres. Mets
- 7:48Speaker 1: received cash. Mayfield, Jim, give me your thoughts on this one.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Yeah. So, look, Freddy Peralta has not pitched well for
- 7:56Speaker 2: the last six weeks and that's a concern. And if
- 7:59Speaker 2: he doesn't start pitching better between now and the trade deadline,
- 8:02Speaker 2: is probably not going to get traded, to be honest.
- 8:05Speaker 2: But if the Padres want to go for it, and
- 8:07Speaker 2: I'm not sure that's their best play, right. They're not
- 8:10Speaker 2: going to catch the Dodgers in the West. Their best
- 8:12Speaker 2: shot is a wild card spot and there are a
- 8:14Speaker 2: few games back there as well, and they got a
- 8:17Speaker 2: bunch of teams they have to jump over. But if
- 8:19Speaker 2: they want to go for it. This is the kind
- 8:21Speaker 2: of deal you make, right I like Mayfield left tenant starter,
- 8:24Speaker 2: probably mid rotation type guy or back rotation guy. You
- 8:28Speaker 2: do it one for one for Peralta. Now, why would
- 8:30Speaker 2: the Mets do it because you get six years of Mayfield?
- 8:33Speaker 2: And why do the Padres do it? Because they're trying
- 8:35Speaker 2: to win right now and it's a rental. That's it.
- 8:37Speaker 2: That's the only reason you do it. And you don't
- 8:39Speaker 2: make the trade if you're the Padres unless you think
- 8:41Speaker 2: your pitching room knows how to fix Peralta and can
- 8:45Speaker 2: and can help you get to the playoffs. So it's
- 8:47Speaker 2: a high risk move for the Padres. It's a smart
- 8:51Speaker 2: move long term for the New York Mets here, So
- 8:53Speaker 2: that's the thicky behind it. I almost wanted to come
- 8:56Speaker 2: up with a trade to have a reunion with Milwaukee
- 8:58Speaker 2: because it's kind of like if the Mets were to
- 9:00Speaker 2: trade him back to the Brewers, they would have a
- 9:02Speaker 2: better chance of fixing him and getting him back to
- 9:05Speaker 2: be the guy he was last year for them. But again,
- 9:08Speaker 2: I'm not sure that David Stern's the president of the Mets,
- 9:12Speaker 2: wants to make another trade with his former team with
- 9:14Speaker 2: Paralta because it looks like he lost the last trade.
- 9:17Speaker 2: But you know, it's something to think about. But anyway,
- 9:19Speaker 2: that was my thinking behind it. What is your take
- 9:21Speaker 2: on it?
- 9:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you know, Paralta's been struggling this year.
- 9:25Speaker 1: You know, he holds an er that's just about four
- 9:28Speaker 1: to six. You know, he has a career high in
- 9:30Speaker 1: his whip this year, and he's a pending free agent.
- 9:33Speaker 1: You know, this isn't the season that we thought Freddie
- 9:36Speaker 1: would have. It was a complete flip flop from last year.
- 9:40Speaker 1: And then you know, the one for one with Cash Mayfield.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You know, it's a pure bi lo bet in my opinion,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and Cash is a guy, like you said, you can
- 9:48Speaker 1: have for six seasons and you can see if you
- 9:50Speaker 1: can develop them. To me, I don't see much risk involved,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know, if I'm the Mets, if anything, getting another
- 9:56Speaker 1: young guy in the in the clubhouse can potentially really
- 10:00Speaker 1: you know, be someone in your rotation in the long term.
- 10:04Speaker 1: You know, I think there's more upside there. So I
- 10:07Speaker 1: like that it's a one for one trade and I
- 10:10Speaker 1: think Cash Mayfield definitely has potential from the left side.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Let's get to the next trade. Idea I'll throw at
- 10:17Speaker 2: you this time, and this is one of my favorite ideas.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And it's a little bit of an overpay by the Cubs,
- 10:23Speaker 2: but here's the thought process. You trade for Michael Walker
- 10:26Speaker 2: of Kansas City, who you control this year, next year,
- 10:29Speaker 2: and there's a club option after that, so you really
- 10:31Speaker 2: could have him for two and a half years. He
- 10:34Speaker 2: was an All Star again this year, still has the
- 10:36Speaker 2: great change up, still is a great downward plane, and
- 10:39Speaker 2: I think Walker really helps the Cubs chances of making
- 10:41Speaker 2: the playoffs here and then return. If I'm Kansas City,
- 10:45Speaker 2: I really it's hard for me to replace Walker. So
- 10:48Speaker 2: if I'm going to trade him, I have to win
- 10:50Speaker 2: the trade. So here's my thought. Second basement, third basement.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Outfielder Matt Shaw and outfielder Kevin Alcantra go from the
- 10:58Speaker 2: Cubs to the Royals for Okay, now, it is a
- 11:02Speaker 2: little bit of an overpay for Chicago, but think of
- 11:04Speaker 2: it this way. Al Contra has not fit in the
- 11:06Speaker 2: plans with the Cubs. They've never given him a runway
- 11:08Speaker 2: at the major league level. They have say as Suzuki,
- 11:11Speaker 2: they are the Royals need offense. If they're going to
- 11:13Speaker 2: trade Walker, they gotta have more bats, and to put
- 11:16Speaker 2: al Contra in left field would be a solution for
- 11:19Speaker 2: them and give him a chance play every day. You
- 11:21Speaker 2: know they're not going anywhere this year. Oh, give him
- 11:23Speaker 2: a major league chance the rest of the way. And
- 11:25Speaker 2: then for Matt Shaw, you know, I love the position
- 11:27Speaker 2: flexibility and whether he fits at second base, third base,
- 11:30Speaker 2: left field, wherever the Cubs feels that he fits. He's
- 11:32Speaker 2: blocked right now right it comes them out. And they
- 11:34Speaker 2: signed Alex Bregman. They extended Nico Horner. Second base and
- 11:38Speaker 2: third base are his two best positions. So for me,
- 11:41Speaker 2: both Shaw and all Contra are expendable, and if you
- 11:44Speaker 2: have to overpay, I would always overpay with expendable players,
- 11:48Speaker 2: So train those two for Michael Walket. It's actually one
- 11:50Speaker 2: of my favorite deals because I think it really does
- 11:52Speaker 2: work for both sides. What do you think about this one?
- 11:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, I think it does work for both sides.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I mean, the only thing I can think of is, maybe,
- 12:01Speaker 1: you know, if the Cubs don't want to overpay, Kansas
- 12:04Speaker 1: City can throw in a rental bat, whether that's Darling Marte,
- 12:07Speaker 1: Lane Thomas. That's kind of what I'm thinking with this deal.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But look Michael Waka, he's pitched the most innings in
- 12:14Speaker 1: the Big League this year. You know, he's been their
- 12:17Speaker 1: best pitcher on the rotation. And then when you look
- 12:19Speaker 1: at Matt Shaw, he's only twenty four years old. He's
- 12:22Speaker 1: hitting two fifty this season, he has four home runs,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and he's very versatile in the field. And then with
- 12:28Speaker 1: Kevin Alcantra, I love watching him play. I mean I
- 12:32Speaker 1: watched his Triple A highlights this season. His swing, he's
- 12:35Speaker 1: a fun kind of player, and you know, maybe he
- 12:38Speaker 1: can sell more tickets since Kansas City and give him
- 12:40Speaker 1: some run. Like you said, let's see what you got.
- 12:42Speaker 1: You know, in Triple A he's hitting two seventy seven,
- 12:45Speaker 1: seventeen home runs, forty two RBIs. Those are pretty good numbers.
- 12:49Speaker 1: But like you said, the Cubs really don't have room
- 12:52Speaker 1: to play these guys. Give them a chance, Give them
- 12:55Speaker 1: a chance. Those are my thoughts on it.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I love it all right. Now, you came up with
- 12:59Speaker 2: a deal yourself that you threw at me, and I
- 13:03Speaker 2: really liked it. So go ahead and share with the
- 13:05Speaker 2: listeners the deal that you came up with.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Yeah, look, I think the Texas Rangers are looking for
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, the top of an order bat someone that's dependable,
- 13:14Speaker 1: someone that gets on base. You know, isn't gonna give
- 13:16Speaker 1: you the pot, but he's gonna get on base for you,
- 13:19Speaker 1: and he's gonna help your two, three, four, five, six
- 13:21Speaker 1: hitters actually driving some runs. So that's luis a rise.
- 13:25Speaker 1: This guy's a winner. He's had multiple batting titles and
- 13:28Speaker 1: he's a four time All Star now four straight years
- 13:31Speaker 1: in a row. So you're receiving that kind of talent
- 13:34Speaker 1: and in return for the Giants, you're getting a pretty
- 13:37Speaker 1: good return in Talton Pence. In yol fran Castillo Dalton Pence.
- 13:41Speaker 1: He was an eleventh round pick in twenty twenty four,
- 13:44Speaker 1: but so far in Hi A and Double A he
- 13:48Speaker 1: has a combined seven two point seven to nine ERA
- 13:52Speaker 1: Over his last fourteen starts. He's had multiple ten strikeout games.
- 13:56Speaker 1: He has a lot of great swing and miss stuff.
- 13:58Speaker 1: And if you're the Giant, odds are you probably not
- 14:01Speaker 1: going to make the playoffs. This is a great young
- 14:04Speaker 1: piece to add to your young core. And then you
- 14:07Speaker 1: know front Castillo, he's an only nineteen year old kid,
- 14:10Speaker 1: but can play short, can play third. He had two
- 14:13Speaker 1: A ball stops. You know, combined three ninety six on
- 14:17Speaker 1: base percentage and forty seleon back. So in return, you're
- 14:21Speaker 1: getting someone that can absolutely run the bass pass and
- 14:25Speaker 1: you're getting a top end arm So I like the
- 14:27Speaker 1: steal for both sides.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Okay, I like your deal. The interesting thing about Arise
- 14:32Speaker 2: is he's really improved defensively at second base this year,
- 14:36Speaker 2: done a lot of work with Ron Washington. I think
- 14:37Speaker 2: there's going to be a lot of teams in on
- 14:39Speaker 2: a rise at the deadline. I think that it fits
- 14:41Speaker 2: well with the Boston Red Sox in particular. I think
- 14:43Speaker 2: the Yankees also a fit. But I do like your
- 14:46Speaker 2: trade idea right there with Texas so Trey. At the
- 14:49Speaker 2: end of the day, look, these are five trade ideas
- 14:51Speaker 2: that we're trying to share with our viewers and our listeners.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I would love to get their feedback on what which
- 14:58Speaker 2: ones they like, which ones they don't like, and more importantly,
- 15:00Speaker 2: how would you change it? Like if you hate this
- 15:02Speaker 2: deal because you think its favors one team more than
- 15:05Speaker 2: the other, how would you adjust the deal and make
- 15:07Speaker 2: it work for both sides? And then, more importantly, I
- 15:10Speaker 2: want to hear from our viewers, like, give us your
- 15:13Speaker 2: trade ideas. That's the fun part as a fan and
- 15:16Speaker 2: a medium member. Between now and the trade deadline on
- 15:19Speaker 2: August third at six pm is all the trade rumors,
- 15:22Speaker 2: all the trade ideas that come. Look, there's going to
- 15:25Speaker 2: be a flurry of action. It's going to probably happen
- 15:27Speaker 2: at the Buzzer this year just because we have parody
- 15:30Speaker 2: in both leagues. We have so many teams in the
- 15:32Speaker 2: penet race. We're not going to know who to sell
- 15:34Speaker 2: until we get to that final week, really, and that's
- 15:37Speaker 2: gonna be Mama drama and I'm here for it, and Tray,
- 15:40Speaker 2: you're not going to be covering it the entire time.
- 15:42Speaker 2: But I really want to get the ideas out there
- 15:45Speaker 2: early and let people, you know, play with them and
