- 0:00Second Samuel. Chapter 19 is where we are
- 0:03meeting tonight. You might be wondering if you've
- 0:05been with us, especially if you were here last week, why are we
- 0:08going to chapter 19? We still have half of 18 to
- 0:12complete and the main reason, why is because when you look at
- 0:16the first few verses of chapter 19, you get the sense that it
- 0:20belongs with the end of chapter 18.
- 0:23What I mean by that is that there is an awkward chapter
- 0:26break here and I'm allowed to say that because Cuz the
- 0:30references in our Bible are not inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- 0:33Those numbers were added much much, much much later after the
- 0:37scriptures were recorded. And so you kind of feel like
- 0:40there's this break that should have happened maybe after the
- 0:44first nine verses or so. But instead of instead of just
- 0:48stopping and starting with a new thought, we're going to honor
- 0:52the context honor the way it was originally written, zoom out and
- 0:56look at the complete picture that is before us because what
- 1:00And last. Where did we stop?
- 1:02Well where we stop whiz with the end of absalom's.
- 1:04Life Absalom was tragically killed and was buried in a
- 1:09Dishonored way because of his disgraceful life.
- 1:14And we know that David's wishes here was that Absalom would be
- 1:20spared in battle and those wishes were disregarded
- 1:23specifically by joab. And what we're going to witness
- 1:28from chapter. 19 on word are the Ramekin ramifications of war or
- 1:34the aftermath of this battle between Father and Son.
- 1:38And before we look at the national consequences, we're
- 1:42going to actually take our time because the Holy Spirit invites
- 1:45us to look at the personal effects that this dark moment
- 1:49had on David. And the way you and I are going
- 1:53to study this is by separating our thoughts in three main
- 1:57categories. The first thing that you and I
- 2:00are going to look into is the report of the news of absalom's
- 2:05death, the report following the report, we're going to look at
- 2:10the remorse. The remorse that David had over
- 2:14the news and finally, and lastly, we're going to look at
- 2:19the rebuke. The rebuke concerning the
- 2:24reaction that David had about the death of his son, a brother
- 2:31prayed, but let's pray again. But we thank you that you've
- 2:35gathered like-minded Christians in this place and Lord, we pray
- 2:42that you would protect this service from becoming a
- 2:47powerless lecture of moral ideas.
- 2:51Let us feel the weight of the authority of the word of God and
- 2:55let us by your grace, since the stirring of the heart.
- 2:59Our affections being revived again for the person of Jesus
- 3:03Christ. May, we believe that, as we look
- 3:05at these verses, it is your very voice speaking and so we pray
- 3:09that nothing would be added That you did not intend to add,
- 3:13nothing would be subtracted that you intended to keep we.
- 3:17Pray that there would be no man-made interpretation or
- 3:20application, May everything be delivered the way you intended
- 3:23it to be delivered. We want to honor you primarily
- 3:27and Lord. We trust that as we honor your
- 3:28word the way it was designed to be honored that we will benefit
- 3:32much and we trust that this will happen tonight in this place.
- 3:36In Jesus name we pray, amen. We're not starting a chapter 19,
- 3:41I just told you to go there, because we want to begin in
- 3:44verse 19 of chapter, 18 and connected the chapter 19.
- 3:47So, scroll back a few verses go to 18:19.
- 3:51We're looking at the report of the news of, absalom's, death
- 3:55and what you're going to realize as I'm reading, this is how it
- 3:58is intriguing to me, at least of the great detail that is given
- 4:03with the background of how this message of absalom's, death is
- 4:06going to arrive to King David. David could have received this
- 4:11news and the Holy Spirit could have summarized it in a verse or
- 4:14two, right? But instead it's drawn out to
- 4:18about a dozen versus clearly. There is something that the Holy
- 4:22Spirit wants to convey to us concerning how it is who it is
- 4:29that brought about the delivery of this news to the king there's
- 4:33instruction here there's application here again.
- 4:36It could have been just and David received the news of
- 4:38absalom's that And he grieved, it could have been just that but
- 4:42instead we get a, we get a really rich look into how this
- 4:47came about and I want you to see it with me to see God's mind for
- 4:50us in it. Then I amaz the son of zadok
- 4:53said, let me run and carry news to the king.
- 4:57At the Lord has delivered him from the hand of his enemies.
- 5:00And job said to him, you are not to carry news today.
- 5:05You may carry news another day. But today you shall carry Reno
- 5:09news because the King's son is dead, then job said to the
- 5:15kushite, go tell the king. What you have seen.
- 5:18The could shite bowed before joab and ran then I Hamas the
- 5:24son of zadok again said to Job. Come what may?
- 5:27Let me run also after the crash site and job said why will you
- 5:32run my son seeing that? You will have no reward for the
- 5:35news verse 23, come what may? He said, I we'll run so he said
- 5:41to him, run And I'm as ran by the way of the plane and outran,
- 5:47the kushite. This is the tale of two
- 5:52messengers of to faithful communicators of Truth.
- 5:57The first being a man named I'm as the second, a nameless fellow
- 6:01who was a kushite. He was not an Israelite.
- 6:03He was a foreigner that apparently served the king and
- 6:07the King James was a cushy but it's believed by many
- 6:09translators that this was more of a reference to his actual
- 6:13ethnicity more than a name. And that's why we have the
- 6:15cushion here before us. Now, there are many things to
- 6:18learn from these verses the first Is that animal has the son
- 6:21of zadok was a messenger in this context back in chapter 15.
- 6:26We were told that King, David instructed.
- 6:28The son of zedekiah man has with another to be informants about
- 6:33what Absalom was up to, and to keep David and his men updated
- 6:37with what was to come to pass. And so this man was called to be
- 6:42a messenger. And at this point, he is very
- 6:45excited and even presumptuous to deliver a new Message to the
- 6:50king. And so he comes to job, though
- 6:53he was not called by job and volunteers himself to bring this
- 6:57news to his beloved master. And when we look at this, we
- 7:02read and see that there is a man who is very excited, but job
- 7:06does not seem to be sharing that sentiment.
- 7:09In fact job is very hesitant extremely hesitant.
- 7:13I am as I don't think you want to deliver this news to the
- 7:16king. Now, why do you think that is?
- 7:18Why do you think job is very reluctant?
- 7:20For, I am as the participate in this endeavor, any idea, all you
- 7:23have to do is think back to David and how he treated
- 7:27Messengers in the past, right? What did he do with past
- 7:30Messengers? Who brought him news that he did
- 7:32not like you killed them? Maybe job really likes I amaz
- 7:38and he doesn't want imma has to be the object of David's
- 7:43frustration in a moment of great pain and so he seeks to spare
- 7:48him and so he Looks at a cushy. And he says, well, why don't you
- 7:51go instead? But what we see here is that
- 7:55more than jobs concern is, the Silence of Iowa has his motive.
- 7:59Why is he so determined to do this?
- 8:02We are not explicitly. Told, makes you wonder if he was
- 8:07a friend of David, Who Loved David and desired David to be
- 8:10prepared for the bad news, right?
- 8:13He knew what Absalom meant to Dave.
- 8:15And so he wanted to in his in essence skillfully, tell him how
- 8:19this would happen. Let somebody just come in guns
- 8:21a-blazing and David is just in a State of Shock.
- 8:24So maybe he just wants to prepare his friend his Lord.
- 8:30But I don't believe that's the case.
- 8:31You know why? Because once you see, I'm Oz
- 8:34encounter, David. And David asked about what
- 8:38happened to Absalom. What is what is ionized do he
- 8:40appeals to ignorance? I don't know what happened, I
- 8:42just saw some kind of commotion going going on there, so it's
- 8:46obvious that he's not willing to come to his Aid necessarily.
- 8:50Maybe Joe has an inside that we don't have look here.
- 8:55I verse 17, excuse me. Verse 22.
- 8:59Then I'm as the son of zadok said again to job come what may
- 9:02let me also run after the cushion and job said why will
- 9:06you run my son seeing that? You will have no reward for the
- 9:10news. could it be that job had an idea that maybe I manage
- 9:15wants to do this so that you can be compensated or rewarded for
- 9:18being the person that brought about this Victory, this
- 9:21Triumph, this news of success And he wants to just give him
- 9:26sobering reality. Listen.
- 9:28You're not going to get anything out of this, so just stay out of
- 9:31this. Again, it's not really clear.
- 9:34It's not definitive, it's not something that we can say
- 9:36dogmatically. what if it's just because I'm as has a pure love
- 9:41for David and he wants to speedily, let him know that he
- 9:46can be alleviated of any angst and concerned because this dark
- 9:50cloud has now passed. His greatest threat is
- 9:53eliminated and his rain will continue.
- 9:55Maybe he's just like what any good friend would want for
- 9:57another friend to just let him know with excitement of the good
- 10:01news, concerning his life. His future the hope, the
- 10:04faithfulness of God. Okay, we can debate what his
- 10:08motive is, but one thing is for certain, I am a has is very
- 10:13excited for something that he is not prepared for.
- 10:20And we're going to see that near the end of this chapter, but we
- 10:24can learn something from that point here and now because I am,
- 10:28as is a picture of many people who really want to serve God,
- 10:33but don't understand what it really entails.
- 10:35Now, I'm fully aware that I think christendom's main problem
- 10:39is to get people to be like I am as and get excited to serve God,
- 10:43right? I think that's more of a
- 10:44challenge than anything else but that's not the only challenge.
- 10:47You have some people who are very eager.
- 10:49Or who are very much invested emotionally into the idea of
- 10:54serving God at a certain capacity and they are not yet
- 10:58informed nor are they yet equipped to do that which they
- 11:01desire to do. They want to run.
- 11:06They want to run and they don't care about the consequences.
- 11:08They don't care about what it might, demand of them, they just
- 11:10want to run, it seems that my herbal but it's actually
- 11:12dangerous. It's dangerous for many reasons.
- 11:17And I am has proves that he's going to show that in a moment
- 11:20and the reasons in which why God would not allow us to move
- 11:26forward in a certain directions, very, and some of those reasons
- 11:29include character deficiency that the Lord wants to develop
- 11:33you and your personality and your attitude and your
- 11:35convictions before he places you on any platform, it can be many
- 11:39reasons. And one of those reasons can be
- 11:40this simple mysterious timing of the Lord where he knows.
- 11:44But opportunity is fitting for you and he knows what's
- 11:46appropriate and what should be either delay, or postpone for
- 11:49your good. And for his glory, And in the
- 11:53case of this man he did not really care.
- 11:57But look at the words of job. Again in verse 20 and job said
- 12:01to him you are not to carry news today.
- 12:04You may carry news another day. But today, you shall not carry
- 12:08no news because this King's son is Dead.
- 12:11Sea job wasn't discouraging. I am as from being a messenger,
- 12:16he was just encouraging him to not take this particular
- 12:19opportunity because he had Insight that I am as did.
- 12:22Not have. Joe, I've had an understanding
- 12:25of this situation, the potential outcome of the situation that I
- 12:28am as did not have. And unfortunately evidently
- 12:31could not care about because he was willing to run for it
- 12:34anyway, and it's really again, a strong picture of how many
- 12:37people relate to the Lord. The Lord knows our future.
- 12:40He knows our tomorrow's, he knows what decisions you make
- 12:44will bring about certain outcomes even if they're
- 12:47dangerous outcomes. And so he and his love and his
- 12:50Providence and his power puts obstacles.
- 12:53Al's closes doors does not allow things to go the way you desire
- 12:57for them to go because he knows something you and I don't you
- 13:02know I have to learn how to trust in.
- 13:03God's leading eager believer. Eager servant of God, learn to
- 13:08trust God's nose and his delays. If not, you might be running
- 13:13into trouble, even know what you think you're running into, is
- 13:15the call of God. God's going to call using to
- 13:19call. You don't self appoint yourself
- 13:21and don't force yourself and don't push doors kicking and
- 13:26screaming and manipulating, it's not going to help you.
- 13:28And it's not going to help the cause of Christ learn to wait.
- 13:32Because as we will see shortly I am as will prove to be lacking
- 13:35in a very important area as a messenger, but for now let's
- 13:38compare them to the cushy to shall we.
- 13:41Joab looks to the could shite and he says you go and tell the
- 13:45king everything that you have seen and what I Love about this
- 13:48nameless. Servant is his immediate
- 13:50response. he bounds, and he runs He doesn't challenge joab.
- 13:57He doesn't negotiate with joab, he simply receives.
- 14:00What has been given to him, and he makes an attempt to do so as
- 14:05Faithfully as possible, not like, I am, as I am, as was
- 14:07going back and forth, debating convincing, he could not take no
- 14:12for an answer from The Authority that has been placed over his
- 14:14life. But I also see something else in
- 14:17the crew. Sheets attitude, joab, called
- 14:20the could shite. The Kush I didn't call for job
- 14:24to call him. It came to him and all the Kush
- 14:29I did is what you're called to do in this whole equation of
- 14:32being used by the Lord. What is that to be ready and
- 14:35willing? That's it.
- 14:37That's the core of this whole thing.
- 14:39If you want to be used by the Lord but you don't know the next
- 14:41step. All you have to do at this
- 14:42moment is to be ready. And to be willing, he was a
- 14:45servant and whatever capacity was a servant and whenever there
- 14:48was a promotion given he was ready to do it, whenever There
- 14:50Was An Open Door that was Tailor-made for him.
- 14:53He was ready to do it. And so wait on the Lord and that
- 14:57way, be ready, be willing be prayerful.
- 14:59Express your desires to be used by God in a certain way there's
- 15:02nothing wrong with that. What's dangerous is when like I
- 15:04am as you start to twist things and push things.
- 15:09And so this could shot here was a man that's worthy, of example.
- 15:12Now here's what's interesting. It only continues.
- 15:15It says here in verse 23, look at it with me in your Bibles.
- 15:19Come what may? He said?
- 15:20I will run so he said to him, run jobs, just like, all right,
- 15:24you're obviously you're very determined.
- 15:26So just get out of here, go ahead.
- 15:27So he runs and then look at this, inside at the end of verse
- 15:3023, then I am a has ran by the way of the plane and outran the
- 15:36Kush a'ight. Why is that in the Bible?
- 15:40Why is that important for me to know that I am has ran and
- 15:44outran? The cachet?
- 15:45What's significant is the cushion.
- 15:46Had a head start. Clearly you had heavy feet or
- 15:49something, right? Because he gets a head start.
- 15:52I'm a has runs and outruns him. And I think the reason and this
- 15:57in this teaching, in this context it's meant to show us
- 15:59that I am as was clearly gifted. He was talented.
- 16:03He was a good runner, a better Runner than the Kush height but
- 16:07where the kushite outshined I'm has was in the realm of
- 16:12character Giftedness was there. Character was lacking or saying
- 16:20where are you seeing that? Just hold on tight.
- 16:21You'll see in a moment. You know, leaders if you want to
- 16:26inside about house leaders face, certain Temptations leaders,
- 16:29often feel the Temptation in the context of ministry to recruit
- 16:33people or to appoint People based out of one and need like a
- 16:38desperate need. And we just need to fill this
- 16:40void or two because somebody excels with a certain ability.
- 16:45That leaders can foresee might enrich their Ministry and so
- 16:48they were willing to overlook weaknesses in order to benefit
- 16:55from a person's god-given strength and it is god-given.
- 17:01And the point that we see here is this that you are better off
- 17:05with a slower, but more faithful Kush 8 than a talented but
- 17:12inadequate Hamas. Gifting will always be
- 17:18subordinate to character. And to God-fearing attitude.
- 17:26Character and a striving for Holiness and obedience and
- 17:32faithfulness to the clear will of God outweighs, gifting all
- 17:36the time all the time. And sometimes, you don't see
- 17:42that immediately, you only see later on And that's what we see
- 17:46here as predicted. I am.
- 17:48As gets to the king first and scroll down with me to verse 29,
- 17:53actually, let's read verse 28, then I am a has Cried Out To The
- 17:57King. All is well easy.
- 17:59He's very excited and he bowed before the king with his face to
- 18:04the Earth and said, blessed, be the Lord, your God who has
- 18:07delivered up the man who raised their hand.
- 18:10Against my Lord, the king. That is what he intended to tell
- 18:13the king good news. Do you have Victory?
- 18:18The conquest is yours. It said it's determined and
- 18:21right away. David shows what's in the
- 18:22Forefront of his mind? And what is it?
- 18:24Verse 29, the king said, is it well with the young man Absalom?
- 18:28Like the victory, didn't even matter.
- 18:30What happens to Israel? What happens to the king?
- 18:32That is not even a thoughts, not a primary thought, at least what
- 18:35he's concerned about is the state of his son.
- 18:39And I get the hunch that I am as was not prepared for that
- 18:42question. Or maybe he was and he gave this
- 18:46answer. But look at this, I am as
- 18:47answered when joab sent the king's servant your servant, I
- 18:52saw a great commotion but I do not know what it was.
- 18:59Who here thinks that I am as being honest.
- 19:02Who here is? He's just like, look, I don't
- 19:04know what happened. I saw something and I don't I
- 19:07can't give you a clearer report. All I know is that there was
- 19:10something, but, hey, good news, you know, you're winning, you
- 19:13want, is he being honest? Because some people believe that
- 19:16he's just utilizing the information that he has.
- 19:19How do we know that's not the case?
- 19:21Thank you. What did job?
- 19:23Tell him the King's son is dead. So he knows that Absalom was
- 19:30dead, so what explanation are you?
- 19:32And I left with, with Hamas is generalization of what took
- 19:35place, he's unwilling to tell him the hard truth.
- 19:40He's unwilling to deliver the full truth and this is where I
- 19:46am as fell short as a messenger. And we think about even today,
- 19:51how many reflect the very same weakness, reluctancy, when
- 19:57they're asked about different things, I'm talking to you
- 20:00Believers me as a Believer. Culturally sensitive issues,
- 20:04right? Clear doctrines, there's no
- 20:07confusion about it though. It may be difficult to apply and
- 20:11exhort is undeniably obvious. Like I'm as many people in their
- 20:18explanation of these things are thinking they're saying
- 20:22something. When the reality do not really
- 20:23seeing anything you've heard it, right?
- 20:25I've heard it over the years, famous Christian musicians, on
- 20:28radio stations being interviewed theology, professors preachers
- 20:34evangelist people pack out stadiums and they're interviewed
- 20:37by secularist. And when they're asked about
- 20:39certain things, they dance around the answer.
- 20:44They remain as ambiguous and as Central as possible.
- 20:50And what they're doing is exactly what the holy spirit is
- 20:53indicating here. They are proving to be
- 20:55unfaithful Messengers, they might be gifted, they might have
- 20:59a platform. I hate my eyes.
- 21:02As you read earlier was actually known for his running when the
- 21:05Watchman saw him running. He goes his running is like the
- 21:08running of a Hamas like imagine being known for your running.
- 21:12So, he was not just a son of a priest.
- 21:14He was athletic. He was, he was good at what he
- 21:16did, but he was unfaithful There are many people like that today
- 21:20and they disqualify themselves, right?
- 21:25And what's interesting here is that it's a lesson about again
- 21:29giftedness not being enough position or platform, not being
- 21:32enough, being promoted by the people not being enough, God has
- 21:36given those who are called to serve him and to honor him with
- 21:40rules. There are rules in the realm of
- 21:44serving the lord and your main ambition and serving the lord is
- 21:49knowing those rules and honoring those rules, no matter what, it
- 21:52reminds me of a verse. And here's the verse in the New
- 21:54Testament, it's in 2nd Timothy 2:5, and in second Timothy 2:5,
- 21:58Paul is speaking about Christian service.
- 22:01You know, what he says in that verse he says, this an athlete
- 22:04is not crowned, unless he competes, according to the
- 22:09rules. What is he talking about?
- 22:12Is he talking about the Olympics of his day?
- 22:14Now, he's talking about Christian Duty.
- 22:17There are many people who are running.
- 22:20But at the end they're going to be encountering, a very shocking
- 22:23report and evaluation they will not be rewarded.
- 22:26You know, you look at some people and you wonder and you
- 22:28even figure some Scandal out or you realize that there's some
- 22:31inconsistency in their behavior. Their one thing up on there on
- 22:36the platform there. Another thing on their social
- 22:37media there, another thing out there in the world and you think
- 22:40like why doesn't God just strike them down?
- 22:43Why doesn't God just remove them immediately sometimes he does?
- 22:46But here's the reality for those who remain that look like
- 22:49they're Still running at the end.
- 22:51They will not be crowned. They will not be rewarded.
- 22:56This verse brought so much relief to me when I saw that in
- 22:59the realm of ministry you look around and you meet people and
- 23:02you hear things and you even see things for yourself and it seems
- 23:06to be no intervention from Heaven.
- 23:07It seemed like they just go on with their Ministry and and
- 23:10they're so big nobody can touch them almost and Hollow people
- 23:13are afraid to correct them. And you think how is God going
- 23:16to do this? And then you wonder, are they
- 23:18legitimate shade? And some are not or maybe they
- 23:20are saved but they could be saved but they're not running.
- 23:23To the rules. So just because you're running
- 23:26doesn't mean you're running. Well it's because you're serving
- 23:28this mean you're serving. Well, what all matters to God is
- 23:32if the rules are being honored and that is what we see with the
- 23:35kushite. What a contrast, right?
- 23:37Come here to the kushite he arrives and he comes with that
- 23:40news in verse 31 and behold the Kush, I'd cane and the Kush I
- 23:44said, good news. For my Lord, the king for the
- 23:46Lord has delivered you this day from the hand of all Who Rose up
- 23:49against you. The king said that the cushion,
- 23:52he isn't well with the young man, Absalom, it's like, wow.
- 23:56And the kushite answered May the enemies of my Lord, the king and
- 24:01all who rise up against you for evil, be like that young man.
- 24:07That's not an easy pill to swallow, but that's what
- 24:11Messengers do. They honor the message, no
- 24:15matter who Their audience is, the message is the message,
- 24:20right? And this man fearlessly
- 24:23courageously, but also wisely knows how to deliver hard truth.
- 24:28Notice what he didn't say, it's a yeah, your son Absalom was
- 24:31hanging by his neck between an oak tree.
- 24:33And there is three javelins that job through into his heart and
- 24:36there is all his armor bears that finished him off,
- 24:38unnecessary delivery, right? So he's aware of his audience.
- 24:43Still, this is, yes, this is a king, but this is the father of
- 24:46the son who died. So I'm going to tell him the
- 24:50truth. But I'm going to say, in a way
- 24:51that I make it the least offensive as possible.
- 24:55While also honoring my duty as a messenger.
- 24:59Makes you wonder why the Holy Spirit put this?
- 25:01I think those are the reasons why at least some of the
- 25:02reasons. And so you see here in the first
- 25:05part the report of the news but now we come to the remorse over
- 25:08the news. We read here in verse 33 and the
- 25:12King was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate
- 25:17and wept and as he went he said o my son Absalom my son, my son
- 25:26Absalom would iodide and Of you. Oh Absalom.
- 25:31My son. My son.
- 25:36Your heart goes out to him. And some way, right?
- 25:41David sorrow, you can sympathize with it but we have to say right
- 25:45from the beginning that it is unwarranted.
- 25:47It's unwarranted and it's excessive because when you bleed
- 25:51over into chapter 19, look what we see, it was told Joe.
- 25:55I behold the king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.
- 25:58So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the
- 26:01people for the people heard that they the king is grieving for
- 26:05his son and the people stole into the city, like they were
- 26:08embarrassed of what they had done.
- 26:10They stole it. Into the city that day as people
- 26:12steal and who are ashamed. When they flee in battle the
- 26:16king covered his face and the King cried with a loud voice.
- 26:20Oh my son, Absalom, oh Absalom, my son, my son.
- 26:27This is this is a little awkward, at least for the
- 26:30people. They risked their lives, for the
- 26:33king, they're willing to die for the king.
- 26:36They opposed the popular vote for the king, and when they
- 26:39fought for the king and came back with a victory, for the
- 26:42king, the king, tucks, his face away hides up in the chamber and
- 26:46just weeps and the news in the city is the king is actually
- 26:50very upset. With the people should have
- 26:53expected as the king waiting at the gate and giving them his
- 26:57praise and his Commendation. But instead, they are met with
- 26:59grief and a broken heart. There are some good hearted,
- 27:05Believers, Some solid followers of Jesus Christ that are
- 27:10vulnerable and susceptible to excessive sadness.
- 27:15They are given over to prolonged misery.
- 27:19This is it not a Temptation for everybody, but it is a
- 27:21Temptation for some. And there are some who would say
- 27:24that the cause of David's pain. Here is the death of his son.
- 27:28Yes. And part but the longevity of
- 27:31it, the reason why I went so far Far is not because of the death
- 27:35of his son. There's a deeper issue here that
- 27:37we have to address. Think back to the two initial
- 27:41responses that David had when those two Messengers came with
- 27:44the news for his kingdom and his position as a king, what was,
- 27:49what was on his mind? was that the kingdom was that
- 27:52Israel was a future was of the Covenant that God made with him
- 27:55that being preserved by his faithfulness know, it was his
- 27:57son, his son, his son, his son, his son, and it's clear that
- 28:03David has come to the point that his personal feelings and
- 28:08relationships and his own world eclipsed.
- 28:13His duty as a king and he lost sight.
- 28:16This is so crucial. He lost sight of God's agenda,
- 28:20his responsibility and his partnership with God's agenda to
- 28:25be a leader over God's people. Do you want to know why there's
- 28:30more dick dejection among the people of God than is necessary?
- 28:35I'll give you one reason because they have lost sight of the
- 28:37kingdom of God. What do I mean by that?
- 28:41Well, they got so distracted, or they've, prioritize things that
- 28:44they should not have prioritized, and they lost
- 28:47sight. Lost grip on eternity.
- 28:50On their blood bought gifts that God has deposited in them of
- 28:55their unique role that they play in the greatest institution that
- 29:01this world will ever known. That's the church, And they've
- 29:05put their identity, they put their priority and that which is
- 29:09under the most important thing and if it's not God's kingdom,
- 29:13if it's not God's purposes, then it's something temporal.
- 29:16And if its temporal then it's subject to loss and because you
- 29:19put all of yourself into those temporal things.
- 29:22When you lose it, you were in danger of losing yourself.
- 29:27This grief and great part is caused because David was
- 29:32consumed by his father leanness and he totally missed his
- 29:38identity as a king called by the Lord is being a father
- 29:42important. Yes, is the loss of a child
- 29:45painful. I can't even imagine.
- 29:46That's why I want to be very careful with my tone and
- 29:49criticizing this man. It is, but we can save ourselves
- 29:55from much undoing if we know how to put things in its proper
- 30:00perspective. A lot of Believers don't know
- 30:03how to deal with persecution with pain, whether it's
- 30:06self-inflicted or caused by others, because they have not
- 30:10kept the bigger picture in front of them.
- 30:15And it reminds me of another story of a man who also was a
- 30:18man of God. One of my favorite men of God,
- 30:20in all of the Bible, one of my favorite profits, actually.
- 30:25Who also got caught up in grief. And it came to the point where
- 30:30he himself was rebuked by the Lord, who is that?
- 30:33Man that I'm referring to. I heard four different guys.
- 30:38Well, a lot of those sounded, right, but I have one in
- 30:42particular and he's a neighbor to the book of second.
- 30:46Samuel. Gays in first Samuel.
- 30:51What's his name? Somebody whispered, it Samuel
- 30:55you remember when Samuel was caught up in grief.
- 30:57Maybe you don't go to 1st Samuel. 16 with me.
- 30:59I want you to see this first Samuel 16.
- 31:02This is why review is necessary. I'm going to bring something to
- 31:05you that I've taught before but we are, we are creatures who
- 31:09need repetition to learn. First name is 16 1.
- 31:12This is after Saul was rejected as king and I want you to see
- 31:16how this chapter opens up. And it's going to teach you
- 31:19something very important about grief first.
- 31:22Samuel 61 reads, the Lord said to Samuel, how long, will you
- 31:26grieve over Saul since? I have rejected him before from
- 31:30being King over Israel, fill your horn with oil and go, I
- 31:33will send you the Jesse the Bethel might fry.
- 31:36I've provided for myself a king among his sons God is not
- 31:41against grief. God is not against your tears.
- 31:44God does not think your pain or your sorrow is a sign of
- 31:49unbelief, it can be, but it's not necessarily always the case.
- 31:53What God is opposed to is exactly what we read here.
- 31:57The duration of our lament, how long will you grieve over saw?
- 32:02That's the problem. How long not The Grieving, the
- 32:05how long you're grieving for? But here's the thing, I want to
- 32:08know when I've crossed the line. I want to know when my sorrow
- 32:14become sinful. How can I be able to identify
- 32:19when I've exceeded the righteous boundaries of those feelings
- 32:24that eat me up inside. And I believe there are two, I
- 32:28believe there are two strong marks of knowing when my pain my
- 32:34sorrow, my misery. Is becoming an offense.
- 32:39The first one is this. This is important.
- 32:41When we begin to accuse the character of God, when we begin
- 32:45to accuse the character of God Samuel here, had reason to
- 32:49grieve over sauce in but as Paul to the Thessalonians you know
- 32:52this that we as Christians grieve differently, we don't
- 32:54grieve as the world Grieves. Your inheritance in Christ.
- 32:57Jesus is a hopeful grievance. Right?
- 33:01The faith that you and I have is so profound and so powerful that
- 33:05it is able to carry you through that storm where you are able to
- 33:09honor God, obey, God and worship God in the midst of it.
- 33:14That is what we have because of the holy spirit, because of the
- 33:16word of God and it makes me wonder if Samuel here is
- 33:21wallowing at this point, because he is lost and forgotten what
- 33:25God has done in the past which is common with most of us, how
- 33:28was Samuel even called to begin with?
- 33:31He was called as a boy. And in first Samuel chapter 3,
- 33:34there's this interesting detail given before Samuel is called.
- 33:38We are told that he was sleeping there in the Tabernacle and that
- 33:41the lamp of the Lord. Still had a little light though.
- 33:45It was not completely snuffed out.
- 33:48Now, we know that that, that lamp that was ordained to be
- 33:52designed by God, in Exodus was designed to give illumination to
- 33:57the entire house of worship. If you didn't have the lamp, You
- 34:01didn't have light, there is no windows, there is no ceiling
- 34:04light, it was just that lamp and you're thinking, well, why does
- 34:08the Lord want to let us know that the light was barely there?
- 34:12And the point is this it was a reflection on the leadership of
- 34:15Israel's day At that time earlier, we're told that Eli's
- 34:21Vision was almost gone. And then we're told about the
- 34:24lamp in verse 34 saying the chapter 3 and so there's a
- 34:27correlation there that the dimming lights spoke of the the
- 34:31dimming of the discernment and the Holiness and the
- 34:35god-honoring leaders of that time, it was almost gone but
- 34:40wasn't completely gone. And it was setting the stage for
- 34:42us to realize that Samuel was going to be promoted at the
- 34:46right time that when it seemed absolutely hopeless.
- 34:49God would raise up another man and it would be actually a young
- 34:52boy, who would be a Offit. That Samuel forget that it's
- 34:57Samuel. Forget that even though Eli.
- 35:00Who is the leader of the picture of God's leadership before King
- 35:02came onto the scene that when he was condemned by God, he raised
- 35:08up another. Would it be any different for
- 35:10Saul? Okay?
- 35:11This man is going to be removed from the throne, okay?
- 35:13He's the first king. Okay, he Dishonored God.
- 35:16Yes, that's hurtful. That's painful but God's agenda
- 35:19has not been thwarted. But he didn't, he didn't know
- 35:23that. He should have known that but he
- 35:24didn't. He lost grip with what God has
- 35:26done before and that that caused them not to believe God for the
- 35:30future. And so in some sense here,
- 35:32Samuel should have known better better.
- 35:34And his grievance here is a sign of unbelief.
- 35:38Because of his history with God because of what God has done in
- 35:41his life through his life. He should have known better but
- 35:44he didn't And that's where we have to be careful because we
- 35:49can look to God. And we can be broken before God,
- 35:53but if our tears blind us from his sovereignty and his
- 35:57providential ways, then we have to understand that we are now in
- 36:02worldly grief. We're not in the grief, that
- 36:05Jesus allows us to agree with. How does David do that here?
- 36:09How does David show that his grief was actually a worldly
- 36:13grief? Not just a worldly grief, but a
- 36:15grief that accuses the character of God Here's where I believe it
- 36:19is. Go back to 18:33.
- 36:22Look what he says here. And the King was deeply moved
- 36:26and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept.
- 36:29And as he went, he said, o my son Absalom, my son Absalom, my
- 36:32son Absalom right. Would I had died instead of you?
- 36:38Oh Absalom, my son, my son. What I've died inside.
- 36:46Again, you want to feel the pain with him, you want to be
- 36:49sympathetic here but that's a terrible wish.
- 36:54What would happen if you died instead of Absalom, what would
- 36:58have become of the Kingdom? What would become of the
- 37:00nation's future? What would it become of God's
- 37:03program? No, in fact, you and I learned
- 37:06in chapter 17 that God intended and designed to bring harm upon
- 37:12absolutely. By defeating the council that he
- 37:15TOEFL. And so, the death of Absalom was
- 37:19perfectly designated by A Perfect God.
- 37:22And what you have here is a man who didn't believe.
- 37:25So I wish I had died. Instead are you kidding me?
- 37:30What are you saying about God's Sovereign?
- 37:31Will what do you think about God's perfect?
- 37:35Dealings with Affairs in life. So when your heart begins to
- 37:40accuse, God's faithfulness, God's wisdom, God's power.
- 37:45Then you know that your grief is illegal and it's crossed the
- 37:49boundary that it shouldn't have crossed but there's a second
- 37:52Mark, it's not when you begin to accuse God in your grief but
- 37:56it's when begin. You begin to lose the grip of
- 37:58your service to God? When you begin to lose your grip
- 38:03on your service to God, that's another flag that indicates our
- 38:06morning crossed, the boundaries that God has designed and not
- 38:12not physically, of course, not being able to move forward.
- 38:16I'm speaking about mentally not being able to say I can move on
- 38:19from this garbage. Still worthy of my service.
- 38:22You know he failed as a King Saul did, right?
- 38:25But we see here that Samuel was still a prophet, saw was no
- 38:28longer King, but Samuel, you're still a man of God and why you
- 38:32need to understand here is that you cannot afford to be so
- 38:35overwhelmed that you are paralyzed in your position, and
- 38:39that's what Greek can do. It can paralyze you, it can keep
- 38:42you in place. It can keep you in place until
- 38:44your dying day. There are mothers who are like
- 38:49that. They're our sons were like that.
- 38:51There are pastors who are like that that they never seem to
- 38:54recover after a severe blow, whether it was from their own
- 38:58failure, or failure of another or something that is
- 39:02unexplainable. And what we see here is that
- 39:05David was morning as a father but just like Samuel, he had a
- 39:09position, he had a calling, he was a king and as a king, he
- 39:12needed to still serve God's people and he's allowing his
- 39:16personal grievances to it. Fear with that calling.
- 39:19And here's the thing. Maybe none of this is relatable
- 39:22to you because you're not in a leadership position, but let me
- 39:24tell you how grief is has a wide spectrum.
- 39:28There are people today who not? Because of a loss of a loved one
- 39:32or because of a tragic incident, but because more like Saul and
- 39:37Samuel, you've been failed by someone, someone has
- 39:41disappointed you. That can be a pastor or leader
- 39:44from a former church, that can be because of spiritual abuse.
- 39:47Zeus and you can never read your Bible the same way again, right?
- 39:52You come here and you worship, but as your worship, you're
- 39:53thinking, maybe all those people in the worship, team are
- 39:56absolute Hypocrites, just like the last church I was a part of
- 39:59maybe that Pastor is not really a true man of God.
- 40:02Just like the last Pastor that destroyed me and my family or my
- 40:06friends. So you look at hypocrisy, you
- 40:10look at others, you look at inconsistencies and you allow it
- 40:13to affect you. As a man of God, as a woman of
- 40:15God, you have some people who just don't want to deal with
- 40:19Ministry because there are people who make more mess than
- 40:21blessing in Ministry. So you don't want to be
- 40:23disappointed again. So you're very distant.
- 40:26Your body is here but you left your heart at home.
- 40:32You have some people who just are skeptical.
- 40:37And they live in that skepticism.
- 40:39And that skepticism has so affected them because of serious
- 40:42things. Maybe not so serious things it
- 40:44so they don't even come to church anymore.
- 40:46They do there's no intensity. There's no participation that
- 40:50Zeal died That Zeal died with your disappointment and now
- 40:56you're just a hollow shell. That wants to try to live your
- 41:00Christian Life without disappointment from others,
- 41:04right? You're wrong.
- 41:08Your grief has led you to grieving the heart of God.
- 41:15And what's amazing here is what God says to Samuel.
- 41:19He says how long, how long will you grieve over Saul?
- 41:23And then he moves forward by saying, fill your horn with oil
- 41:27and go I will send you to Jesse the bethlem light What is he
- 41:32trying to say there? Hey Samuel, you still have a
- 41:35purpose to fulfill. I still have a call for you.
- 41:39You're still my man and I need you to understand that, and I
- 41:44need you to walk in that. And here's what I think is so
- 41:46insightful, I think and I believe That God giving this
- 41:52instruction to Samuel was not just because it was his
- 41:56responsibility. But because in that was a
- 41:58remedy. One of the greatest remedies to
- 42:02seeing healing is serving God. What do I mean by that?
- 42:07Here's the thing. When you because what Ministry
- 42:10really is, is coming to the aid of people's needs.
- 42:13When you surround yourself and put yourself before people who
- 42:17have needs, it takes your eyes off of you.
- 42:22And so you're not wallowing as much because you're distracted
- 42:25in a way. In a holy way, in a good way,
- 42:28service is a sanctifying shield and that Shield can protect you
- 42:32from being swallowed up by yours.
- 42:35Your sadness or even protecting you from sexual Temptation.
- 42:39Listen, Samuel was not going to do any good for himself by
- 42:42staying in his room and crying day after day after day.
- 42:46And that's proven even in David's life when he chose to
- 42:49stay home with his thoughts. Stead of being out in the
- 42:52battlefield, like, God called them to be.
- 42:56And so, the Lord tells Samuel get up, fill your horn with oil
- 43:00and go and anoint, the men that I have prepared to take salts
- 43:03place. In other words, get busy, get
- 43:06busy serving the lord You're not going to heal by laying there
- 43:12and just letting time wash Over You, Without You Walking In the
- 43:16purpose that God has for you. And that happens actually with
- 43:20David, this is just happening with sauce.
- 43:21I'm trying to prove this that this is not just an isolated
- 43:24incident. This is something that we see as
- 43:25a principle throughout the word of God, you haven't read it.
- 43:28So I'm not going to ask you the question, but here's where we
- 43:30see that same idea being articulated.
- 43:33Go to chapter 19 again and look at verse 7.
- 43:39This is joab. Joab is the agent of Correction,
- 43:44not the Lord himself, but job is.
- 43:46And he says to David now, therefore arise go out and speak
- 43:50kindly to your servants. For I, swear by the Lord, if you
- 43:54do not go, not a man will stay with you this night and this
- 43:57will be worse for you than all the evil that has come upon you
- 44:00from your youth. Until now, then the king arose
- 44:03and took his seat in the gate. And the people were all told.
- 44:06Behold the king is sitting in the gate and All the people came
- 44:10before The King, right? You know, a job is saying, get
- 44:12up. Stop sitting here in your room.
- 44:17Pounding your fist. And go do what you're supposed
- 44:21to do as a king. I get very nervous when sad
- 44:25Christians don't show up anymore.
- 44:29I get very nervous. You should get nervous too.
- 44:36The Lord's words to Samuel. You can safely translate them in
- 44:40the following way. Why are you still acting like
- 44:43this sauce? Failures have not affected my
- 44:48plans for the nation and you still have a calling that I gave
- 44:52you so, get going. David gives the same advice.
- 45:00The remorse over the death. Now we come to the rebuke the
- 45:04rebuke We come to chapter 19. Right job was told, behold the
- 45:10king is weeping he's devastated and job would not tolerate this
- 45:15for one moment further. He's going to confront David and
- 45:20so he comes to David. And job has messed up a lot and
- 45:25he's actually going to mess up even more after this chapter.
- 45:29But what job does here is instructive He comes to the king
- 45:37and he rebukes him. He rebukes this man and it might
- 45:42seem a little intense, but here's what I want to tell you
- 45:45rebuke. Is very necessary at times and
- 45:50sometimes intensity in that rebuke is just as necessary.
- 45:56What woke up? Samuel rebuke.
- 46:00What woke up David rebuked. I'm going to get to a little
- 46:05teaching on rebuke because we're intimidated by that word and we
- 46:09kind of put that Christian instruction in a vault.
- 46:13And we try not to touch it ever in our lives.
- 46:17And so we like exhortation, we like instruction, we like
- 46:20encouragement, but also rebuked know.
- 46:23We can be doing rebuke stuff. That's on Godly.
- 46:26It can be, but it's absolutely necessary.
- 46:30I want you to see something here, a few insights with what
- 46:32job does with his friend verse 5.
- 46:37We told that he receives a news about Absalom or his father's
- 46:43grief over. Have some verse 5, then job came
- 46:45into the house to the king and said I liked that job came to
- 46:50his house. You know what that tells me?
- 46:53David went to his house and David stayed in his house when
- 46:58David was supposed to be around. Of people.
- 47:02He was supposed to be before the people celebrating rejoicing
- 47:06giving, thanks to God. And instead he goes up to his
- 47:10chamber sticks, his hand in his face and drenches his fingers
- 47:17with his tears. Isolation is so common for those
- 47:23who are sorrowful. Can I tell you something?
- 47:27It's very unwise to do that for too long.
- 47:30You might need some time alone to process your grievances, but
- 47:35to stay there. Is suicide for the soul.
- 47:42And job comes here with intervention.
- 47:44He comes here. He comes to this man in his very
- 47:47home, and what do you find David doing?
- 47:51From what he learned in 18:33 to chapter 19, he still singing the
- 47:55same song. My son, my son, all the same.
- 48:00Tune, the same song. The same problem.
- 48:03Nothing's changed even though he became isolated.
- 48:09Isolation can be deceptive and again being surrounded by
- 48:12people. Even people who have needs can
- 48:14bring your healing faster. This is God's wisdom.
- 48:18And additionally for those who lean towards isolation, may add
- 48:21something okay? Because some of us are more
- 48:24introverted Like being around like being here.
- 48:28Right now is like it's difficult for you and it's only going to
- 48:30get more difficult when people stand up and they might shake
- 48:33your hand. You just want to zoom out of
- 48:34here as soon as possible. I get it.
- 48:37I know people like that and doesn't mean you're any less
- 48:39Godly than a person who is an extrovert.
- 48:42But for those who tend to have leniencies towards pulling away
- 48:46from others, especially when your heart is heavy, you have to
- 48:50understand that. Do you think you are healing
- 48:53from hurt the very Act and the Very cessation of your presence
- 48:59is actually most likely hurting others.
- 49:04Look at the words here of job in verse six because you love those
- 49:08who hate you and hate those who love you.
- 49:12For you have made it clear today.
- 49:14That commanders and servants are nothing to you for today.
- 49:19I know that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead
- 49:22today, then you would be pleased.
- 49:23That seems a little intense, right?
- 49:26It's again sometimes rebuke is necessary and sometimes a little
- 49:29dose of intensity is needed in that rebuke.
- 49:32What's he trying to say here is like, look the fact that you're
- 49:35pulling away from everybody with with your tears and your
- 49:39Brokenness, you're actually communicating something.
- 49:41They're not valuable to you. They have nothing to offer you
- 49:45their not important to you especially when these people
- 49:47have given so much of themselves to you.
- 49:50So it can be a very selfish thing and it can actually cause
- 49:52others to hurt, see the body of Christ.
- 49:56Listen, you're a member of the body and when the body's hurting
- 49:59scripture tells us, we all hurt meaning that we hurt together.
- 50:05And so if you're if you're hurting and you're temptation is
- 50:08to pull away your like a finger that wants to disconnect from
- 50:11the hand. Yeah.
- 50:13You think that being isolated will help you write?
- 50:17But in fact you've severed something and you're causing
- 50:19others to bleed at the same time, this is a place where you
- 50:23receive your healing, the people of God.
- 50:25If this is truly Godly place with people who love the Lord
- 50:28and love his word, this is where you receive your wholeness
- 50:31again. God designed it that way.
- 50:34And Satan would love for you. Even not just in your sin
- 50:37people. People always think somebody's
- 50:39isolating themselves because of their sin.
- 50:41No, it can be because of their sadness and that sadness will
- 50:44lead to sin. That's the whole idea.
- 50:48It's to learn discipline yourself, to throw yourself at
- 50:52the feet of the hands and feet of Jesus.
- 50:55The people of God, pour out your heart.
- 50:58Am I saying that you can't be along?
- 51:00Just saying don't be alone too long.
- 51:02And so we see here that job comes to this man's Rescue by
- 51:06appearing and showing up and dealing with him and what does
- 51:09he do? You've heard me say, he rebukes
- 51:12and I wanted to take advantage of talking about rebuke, just a
- 51:13little bit. What does it mean to rebuke?
- 51:15Does anybody have an idea? Like what's a Christian word?
- 51:18Rights are in a Christian vocabulary, I don't know if you
- 51:20know what it means. What does rebuke mean?
- 51:22To correct. I would say it's even more than
- 51:24that. It's that's the essence of it
- 51:25but what does it mean to rebuke? Because I can be teaching and
- 51:27it's correcting. Better a firm correction.
- 51:35I would even go more than that. It's a confrontation.
- 51:42That seeks to criticize a wrong. For the sake of restoring,
- 51:49someone from sinful Behavior. That's what it means to rebuke.
- 51:55And the scripture in the New Testament encourages us to
- 51:59rebuke, especially for those who are in leadership positions,
- 52:04they are commanded to rebuke, right?
- 52:07But as Believers in Luke 17, it says, when a brother sin against
- 52:09you rebuke him. So even as Believers, you might
- 52:11not have a position of teaching or preaching, but your call to
- 52:15in day-to-day life at times to rebuke, Now I'm fully aware that
- 52:21there are some who have a strange satisfaction and
- 52:24gratification of confronting people.
- 52:27There's some relief there for them, they just vent and they
- 52:30just, they send superiority by reprimand.
- 52:35I don't know how they do that. I think rebuking is one of the
- 52:37most uncomfortable experiences for the Christian for anybody
- 52:41who has a delight in it. There needs to be some
- 52:44counseling there. Okay.
- 52:47It's difficult to do, it's difficult to do that.
- 52:50So I think it's comanded because it's not something that
- 52:52naturally we want to do at least for some But nonetheless, it is
- 52:57a command. You see that second Timothy 4:2,
- 52:59you see that in Titus 2:15 where these pastors are commanded by
- 53:03God to know how to confront people in their sin.
- 53:06Now, with that being said, I mentioned how we kind of put
- 53:08that in a vault and we put a very, very strict code on it, so
- 53:11we never open that Vault ever again, because who wants to
- 53:13rebuke, right? No, you're supposed to rebuke,
- 53:17but cautiously Very cautiously because that kind of
- 53:22Confrontation can do very much more damage than it can good.
- 53:27And I think the best way to know how to be like Christ in your
- 53:32rebuking is to ask a series of questions to self-reflect to
- 53:37pause and to be more confident in your motive.
- 53:41And in your reason before you make that move, some people are
- 53:44trigger happy with their rebuke, right?
- 53:47And I think in some cases, Rebuke is necessary immediately
- 53:51and even publicly. When Paul rebuked Peter, he
- 53:55didn't send him an email after the whole thing, galatia?
- 53:57Right. He rebuked them publicly in
- 54:00front of everybody, and I think the rule for that is, if the sin
- 54:02is public, it deserves public correction If the sin is
- 54:07private, then it warns private confrontation, right?
- 54:11Just like your confession of sin, by the way, let me just
- 54:14give a word of counsel. If your sin is private and it
- 54:18deals with very intimate details, it's not necessary for
- 54:22your testimony to share and to spill all the guts.
- 54:26Okay, there's wisdom and even how you share your testimony.
- 54:30Coming back to this. So he I'm just I'm curious
- 54:34because we want to be equipped. What questions do you think are
- 54:36necessary to ask yourself before you come to a point where you
- 54:39deal with a person and criticize them for their sin?
- 54:42Not them as a person but criticized, their sin.
- 54:44And the way they're living for the sake of restoring them unto
- 54:46Holiness. Any ideas?
- 54:47What questions? Very good.
- 54:51What is my intention in this? Am I just angry at them?
- 54:54Do I just want to spill over my emotions on them?
- 54:56Because they did something that I didn't like, or why do I want
- 55:00to see them restore? Do I really want to see them
- 55:02rescued? And the means by which I will
- 55:05see that at least closer. Into realities through this
- 55:08rebuke. Yeah.
- 55:10Do I love them? And I think that correlates with
- 55:12that. Do I love them and doing this
- 55:14and in loving them you want to see them restore.
- 55:16And so you're willing to rebuke them as uncomfortable as that
- 55:18may be for you. Any other idea?
- 55:21Is it biblical I love that point.
- 55:23Am I confronting someone because of a personal preference Am I
- 55:30confronting someone? Because of something that might
- 55:33be right for their conscious but not as right for my conscience,
- 55:36or is this black and white in the Bible, very important.
- 55:40A lot of Confrontation is done because you're doing something
- 55:43that I don't like, well, where's the verse in chapter it?
- 55:45Well, it's because I don't like it.
- 55:47So that doesn't work. You're gonna cause more Civil
- 55:49War than anything with that kind of attitude.
- 55:50Yes, Is it the right time? That's very important, too.
- 55:57Right? We need to know that timing is
- 55:59important, context is important. Place is important Peterson
- 56:04publicly. It deserved public correction.
- 56:07If you saw brother sitting somewhere and you're in charge
- 56:10of worship, and you get on before we sing this song,
- 56:15Brother so-and-so. I saw at the mall and brother, I
- 56:18did tell you something you're wrong for what you did to that
- 56:22Clerk and your attitude that wasn't Christ like no, no no.
- 56:26Extreme example, but you'd be surprised.
- 56:29Yes. You guys are doing so good.
- 56:37Am I rebuking somebody for a sin that I'm entertaining myself?
- 56:42Whoo, there's the spec but here's the log, And what we do
- 56:47is when we confront people with that log we tend to walk them
- 56:50over the head, right? So pulled along out, do some
- 56:55self surgery first and then you will see clearly to know how to
- 56:59deal with somebody else. We have a log in your eye, you
- 57:01don't tell you don't tend to see clearly not from experience.
- 57:04I just assumed log in your eye doesn't help very good, very
- 57:08good, anything else How do I know if my rebuke is legitimate?
- 57:15Okay, good. So when it comes to confronting,
- 57:19especially with sensitive matters, or when the accusation
- 57:22is severe, it helps to have witnesses.
- 57:24Now I'm not, that's not always the case, because scripture
- 57:26tells us in Matthew 18 that if a brother has sinned that you
- 57:29approach him privately, right? You bring in two or three other
- 57:33Witnesses when he doesn't repent.
- 57:35But when it comes to certain situations and you're right
- 57:37brother, when you see somebody especially in a leadership
- 57:40position, where told you got to have more than one witness here,
- 57:43they can't just be something that comes from your perspective
- 57:46or your ideas. It's good to have more than one
- 57:48individual who can validate what your concerns are.
- 57:51Yes. And I think that comes back to
- 57:58the timing thing, right? And my ready is my heart in the
- 58:00right place for me to approach this brother or the sister with
- 58:03my concerns. Yes.
- 58:08Yeah so am I judging them with the right calculation?
- 58:10Again by scripture so we're kind of revisiting some of the points
- 58:13that we already made. Somebody hasn't made one point
- 58:15that I think is crucial. I'm going to give it a couple
- 58:18more tries before I make it. Okay, so restoration, right?
- 58:26So it's interesting, right? We rebuke, but Timothy was told
- 58:30by Paul you rebuke and you exhort Reprove rebuke exhort.
- 58:37So Our intention, there isn't a blow things up and leave things
- 58:40in pieces. We come, we deal with that
- 58:43thing, but we also come with a solution and I think part of
- 58:46that solution to and if you, if you're a person that wants to
- 58:48know if you're ready for that solution, I think.
- 58:50One thing that can help is if you're praying for that person,
- 58:54not just willing to confront the, but if you're praying for
- 58:56them and prepared to pray for them after the matter, right?
- 59:00But more than that brother. Look, you're in the wrong.
- 59:03And I've Seen this as a pattern. It's not right it's breaking my
- 59:07heart is breaking others people's heart but here's the
- 59:09thing, how can I help you? What can I do?
- 59:13What can I offer you to see you overcome this?
- 59:17That's something that will win. A person's heart.
- 59:19At least it should. Yes.
- 59:21Yeah, you're in it. How to bring up the matter of
- 59:28rebuke. Yeah.
- 59:29So how are you going to watch your tone?
- 59:30What's your voice? If you're going to premeditate
- 59:32it make sure that you have it planned out, at least the best
- 59:35that you can. I'll give you what I think.
- 59:38Everything you said I agree with 100%.
- 59:40Here's one that we also have to consider.
- 59:43Am I willing to receive the rebuke that I'm about to give
- 59:51That's huge, right? How would I feel if I was
- 59:54sitting at the other end of that coffee table?
- 59:57Hearing what I'm planning to say to that brother or sister, most
- 1:00:04of the time, if you're ready to rebuke somebody, you're going to
- 1:00:06revisit your script. When you ask that question, you
- 1:00:09will probably 99.9% of the time you at least revisit it and
- 1:00:15maybe Council somebody else to help you.
- 1:00:17Put it together in a certain way to make it airtight from any.
- 1:00:21Any cardinality or unnecessary offense?
- 1:00:24Am I will, how would I would Should I be convinced that this
- 1:00:28person really loves me wants to see Christ formed in me, the way
- 1:00:33I am prepared to say what I'm about to say. and if you can
- 1:00:40say, yes, then you're ready for that rebuke, and the Lord needs
- 1:00:46to give us wisdom, right? Lord doesn't need to give us
- 1:00:48wisdom because sometimes that rebuke will be something we have
- 1:00:52to be ready to do at that very moment.
- 1:00:56And the way that we are ready, is when we remain prayerful, we
- 1:00:59remain watchful. When we remain continually in a
- 1:01:04place of self-examination, so we're continually clean vessels.
- 1:01:08So that when we are taken by surprise, will be more
- 1:01:12christ-like than ever. There's so much more to say.
- 1:01:16I'm not going to continue to say anything, but here's what I want
- 1:01:18to say, and enclosing If you're a person who is sorrowful today,
- 1:01:24you did the right thing in coming to this place, but I want
- 1:01:27to let you know that the Lord has Mercy toward you even in
- 1:01:32your grief. And sometimes his Mercy comes in
- 1:01:35the form of a rebuke. So maybe today you are you have
- 1:01:40been enduring pain and it's been paralyzing.
- 1:01:44Hear God's voice in this study today and realize that if you
- 1:01:47have been accusing God, even slightly or your walk with the
- 1:01:51Lord, has been altered in any shape or form because of that
- 1:01:53grief. Realize that the Lord wants to
- 1:01:56heal you today. Realize that he has a purpose
- 1:01:59for you. Realize that his program is
- 1:02:02bigger than your personal life and your part of that program in
- 1:02:05your life is beyond your son. Your daughter.
- 1:02:08Your life is beyond your job. Your life is beyond what others
- 1:02:11have done. It's bigger than that and you're
- 1:02:12part of that bigger picture. You know what's so sad, is how
- 1:02:17David's grief here? Cause other people to be to be
- 1:02:20sad? And to really even caused
- 1:02:24themselves to reflect on their own ways and their own
- 1:02:28decisions, you know, you have parents who when they go
- 1:02:30through, grieving things specifically with one specific
- 1:02:34child, they isolate themselves with other children.
- 1:02:38They don't give any love any attention to the children, they
- 1:02:40just keep remembering what about that once on whether their
- 1:02:42Wayward or even altogether loss from this life.
- 1:02:46And what happens to those kids, they get bitter, they get
- 1:02:50broken. They pull away they Rebel and so
- 1:02:53we need God's wisdom, Even in our pain, we need the Lord's
- 1:02:56help. We can do a whole series on
- 1:02:58that. Can we not?
- 1:03:00But it's 935 so you're not getting a Series tonight.
- 1:03:03At least let's pray. Lord words.
- 1:03:19Can't express how how full my heart feels to see a room filled
- 1:03:24with people who are eager to hear from your word.
- 1:03:27Thank you for this Bible study. Thank you that on a Friday
- 1:03:31night. People want to be under the word
- 1:03:33of God, or we asked conveyed today would have been beneficial
- 1:03:38to our walk with you. We pray, Lord that you would
- 1:03:41help us be. Believers who know how to grieve
- 1:03:46with hope. We pray that you would help us
- 1:03:49to be faithful Messengers, not like I amaz who get excited, but
- 1:03:53don't understand the responsibility of running this
- 1:03:57race. Help us be like cush site.
- 1:04:01Help us be like that man who may not have had the fastest feet,
- 1:04:05but was obedient and faithful to what you asked of him.
- 1:04:08Well we pray that in those uncomfortable moments where we
- 1:04:11might have to correct a brother or we might have to criticize
- 1:04:15even for the sake of seeing them restored.
- 1:04:18We won't have to call them out. Lord maybe we not be unwilling
- 1:04:23to wield that but when we also be cautious to do so in the most
- 1:04:27christ-like manner as possible, help us believe that.
- 1:04:30Like with Samuel and David rebuke was the means by which
- 1:04:33you revived their concern for you and your purpose for them.
- 1:04:40And Lord for those who attempted to isolate, for those who might
- 1:04:42be in isolation, this very moment, maybe they're not here
- 1:04:45because they are isolating. Go, where we can't go.
- 1:04:51Help us know what to do. But also Lord, if we've done all
- 1:04:53that we can do, would you be merciful and speak to them?
- 1:04:57As you spoke to Samuel, open their eyes, let your voice be
- 1:05:01loud and clear rescue them from their despair.
- 1:05:04Pull them out of that pit so they can operate the way you've
- 1:05:08called them to be with their gifting and their presence and
- 1:05:11their involvement in the advancement of your purpose.
- 1:05:14Lord, we look to you and we trust you and we sing to you
- 1:05:17with gladness of heart. In Jesus name we pray.
- 1:05:20Amen. Let's stand Worship the Lord.
