- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:14It's the 13th of August, and I'm so glad that you have joined me
- 0:19so that you and I can do what we do.
- 0:21Every day that we get together, we read God's Word.
- 0:24How great is that? And today we'll continue reading
- 0:27through the book of First Corinthians.
- 0:29Yes, friends, First Corinthians. And you might be forgiven for
- 0:34thinking Paul really has this strong focus on sexual sin.
- 0:38Why does he ever focus on that above other sorts of sin?
- 0:42The thing about Corinth at that time was as a port where all
- 0:47this trading happened and people from all over the Roman Empire
- 0:50came together. There were lots of different
- 0:53religious practises and one of the most pervasive religious
- 0:57practises, which was incredibly damaging to the Christian
- 1:01community was that of temple prostitutes where the act of of
- 1:06sex was part of Pagan worship. So Paul is very keen to make
- 1:11sure that members of God's church understand that this is
- 1:14not part of what it means to live a life as part of God's
- 1:19Kingdom. So that's why he'll address it.
- 1:23So you ready? Let us read this chapter
- 1:25together. Let's read together, friends.
- 1:26First Corinthians chapter 6 When one of you has a dispute
- 1:41with another believer, how dare you file a lawsuit and ask a
- 1:46secular court to decide the matter instead of taking it to
- 1:49other believers? Don't you realise that someday
- 1:53we believers will judge the world?
- 1:55And since you are going to judge the world, can't you decide even
- 1:59these little things among yourselves?
- 2:02Don't you realise that we will judge angels?
- 2:05So you should surely be able to resolve ordinary disputes in
- 2:09this life. If you have legal disputes about
- 2:12such matters, why go to outside judges who are not respected by
- 2:16the church? I'm saying this to shame you.
- 2:21Isn't there anyone in all the church who is wise enough to
- 2:24decide these issues, but instead one believer sues another right
- 2:29in front of unbelievers? Even to have such lawsuits with
- 2:34another is a defeat for you. Why not just accept the
- 2:39injustice and leave it at that? Why not let yourselves be
- 2:42cheated instead? You yourselves are the one who
- 2:46do wrong and cheat, even your fellow believers.
- 2:50Don't you realise that those who do wrong will not inherit the
- 2:54Kingdom of God? Don't fool yourselves.
- 2:57Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit
- 3:02adultery, or a male prostitutes, or practise homosexuality, or
- 3:07are thieves or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive or
- 3:11cheat people, none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.
- 3:17Some of you were once like that, but you were cleansed, you were
- 3:22made holy, you were made right with God by calling on the name
- 3:27of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God, you say
- 3:35I'm allowed to do anything, but not everything is good for you.
- 3:40And even though I'm allowed to do anything, I must not become a
- 3:45slave to anything. You say food was made for the
- 3:49stomach and the stomach for food.
- 3:52This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.
- 3:56But you can't say that our bodies were made for sexual
- 4:00immorality. They were made for the Lord, and
- 4:03the Lord cares about our bodies. And God will raise us from the
- 4:08dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead.
- 4:14Don't you realise that your bodies are actually parts of
- 4:17Christ? Should a man take his body which
- 4:21is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute?
- 4:25Never. And don't you realise that if a
- 4:27man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body
- 4:31with her? For the scriptures say the two
- 4:35are united into one, but the person who is joined to the Lord
- 4:41is 1 Spirit with him. Run from sexual sin.
- 4:46No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does, for
- 4:52sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.
- 4:56Don't you realise that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit
- 5:00who lives in you and was given to you by God?
- 5:05You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high
- 5:10price, so you must honour God with your body.
- 5:26Jesus, you did purchase us with a high price, the high price of
- 5:33your own life. And when you saw that price, you
- 5:38didn't run. When you saw that price, you
- 5:41didn't say, oh Father, I'm not quite sure they're worth it.
- 5:47No, you went to Calvary and you paid that price, that high, high
- 5:53price because you think we are worth it and you love us because
- 6:01you've paid that price. We are transformed.
- 6:04People continue to transform us day by day so that we can keep
- 6:10our hearts, our minds and our bodies as purified temples where
- 6:18Your Holy Spirit resides. Come Holy Spirit, reside in US,
- 6:24transform us and remind us each and every day that we were
- 6:29indeed bought for a very high price because we are loved and
- 6:34cherished by the living God of the universe.
- 6:38And so we pray all of this in Jesus saving name, Amen.
