- 0:00SPEAKER_06: This is a special episode of Let's Stick Together brought to you by Y1.
- 0:22SPEAKER_06: As we are brought to you by Y1, it is finally time to introduce one of the founders as our special guest on this special episode.
- 0:31SPEAKER_06: We have YUP, obviously.
- 0:32SPEAKER_06: We've lost Brendan, as per, but we have Chris Ray, who is founder of Y1 with Tom Carson, ex USA USA International Goalkeeper.
- 0:42SPEAKER_06: It's a pleasure to have you, Chris.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for having me.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Buzzing to be on after being a listener since the start.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Um, a massive advocate for it.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I love what you guys are doing.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: So great to be here.
- 0:54SPEAKER_06: YouP has just called you a hockey badger off off air.
- 0:57SPEAKER_06: And would would you class yourself as a hockey badger?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I guess, yeah, I guess I am.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: I've got to admit it.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can't can't deny that.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06SPEAKER_06: I think you kind of have to be when you start a hockey company.
- 1:10SPEAKER_06: You can't really be like, oh yeah, I don't really like it.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: And I've all yeah, I've just always loved it.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And then I thought, how can I actually make this a job?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So I guess that would classify super badger.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: You how are you?
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: I'm good.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: I'm a bit neckered, to be honest, because we had two uh big uh big days with uh with uh national team, but uh all good, ready for Euros.
- 1:35SPEAKER_02: So uh that's good.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: And congrats on you, Philip.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: You made uh you made the cut again.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: 38 years old, made it.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Well done.
- 1:44SPEAKER_06: This is actually one of them weird times where like you know, you and you and Brendan, I was actually getting myself ready for it.
- 1:50SPEAKER_06: I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:50SPEAKER_06: Like you and Brendan have done your special episodes where you didn't get picked and you were all emotional, and you tell us how you're gonna bounce back, and then and then it's it's been really nice, and and you know, I was kind of gearing myself up for that episode, but yeah, I'm I'm there again.
- 2:05SPEAKER_06: And congratulations to you as well, Yep.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, thank you, Philip.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Are you now are you now trying to be like uh Galli Mero about being picked?
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: That you were ready to have a special episode about not being picked, and now that that's taken away from you.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: No, I think I'm fine with never that was none on my bingo card for LST to be honest.
- 2:24SPEAKER_06: If I'm honest, I I much prefer this way.
- 2:26SPEAKER_06: I just was kind of uh it crossed my mind, let's say.
- 2:30SPEAKER_06: Um, yeah, so so we want to do a euro special.
- 2:33SPEAKER_06: We're gonna sum up some of the some of the news, some of the pro league, but we're also gonna get into a little bit of of detail about Y1, who as as you know me and me and Yupa uh are huge advocates and Y1 supported athletes.
- 2:46SPEAKER_06: We thought it was right because Y1 is celebrating its 10-year anniversary.
- 2:49SPEAKER_06: A lot of exciting stuff come up that we have Chris on.
- 2:52SPEAKER_06: Talk about some of the cool stuff that's going on at the moment.
- 2:54SPEAKER_06: So, first of all, Chris, can you believe that Y1 is having its 10-year anniversary this year?
- 3:00SPEAKER_06: How's how does that feel to you?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it feels really weird.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I absolutely don't believe it.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Because it it not that it feels like it was yesterday, but I guess me and Tom, like we never had a plan.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, if we're really honest, when we started, we were selling onesies out of our dorm room at uni, and to now be like this, you know, hockey brand and teamware and all on and the paddle side, you know, I think that's the weird bit that we just yeah, never really thought more than a year in advance.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Um, and now yeah, obviously we've got a big team of staff, and yeah, it's just pretty wild, very weird.
- 3:40SPEAKER_06: And what what would you say is something that I mean, just to put you on the spot, what's something that's like been a been a highlight, uh like a really amazing memory over the years?
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's yeah, there's so many.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I think I think it's got to be Paris Olympics, just because that's the first Olympics I ever went to.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Um, because even London, I I was uh in America at the time.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, just never been to Olympics, and I went for the first time, and that was absolutely sick.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: And obviously, you made my day by winning it.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Um so I yeah, I think you spent I spent a lot of time like behind a laptop, you know, in meetings, doing that sort of stuff, and like doing that back end admin of a business and actually going out and just enjoying it and seeing like players at the top level winning medals.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: That was sick.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, really, really cool.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: That's epic.
- 4:31SPEAKER_06: It's a pretty pr pretty proud moment to see so many of so many players actually representing Y1 at that Olympics as well, both men and women.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I think yeah, we had no well, obviously the the business started in 2015, the hockey business.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: 2016, you know, we were still like just getting to grips with it and demoing sticks and didn't have anyone at Rio.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Then we had a few people at Tokyo, obviously that was behind closed doors, and then yeah, to have like 26 at Paris.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: That was that was epic.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: That was so yeah, really, really cool.
- 5:02SPEAKER_06: And I don't want to I don't want to turn this into a business podcast because we are gonna get on like we're gonna get on to like the the cool stuff, like you's new stick, um and and you know, like you know, the new Scandy range, but like just very quickly, like um why would you say Y1 has been successful?
- 5:20SPEAKER_06: It's it's it's such a such a huge brand here in the UK, it's growing everywhere else.
- 5:24SPEAKER_06: Like, what have you done to make it successful?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess on one part with the you know, 10-year anniversary, I also still feel like I'm always in like startup phase, you know.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: I think that's kind of kept us going this whole time.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: So it's like you never feel like you've made it, like never ever feel like that.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Um because you know, you know, there's always somewhere where we're not that strong, or like the Netherlands, we've still got so much work to do, or um thing, you know, things like that.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: You know, so it's not like yeah, we're sitting here thinking, yeah, this is epic.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so what was your what was your original question?
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: I've got you already for the other listeners.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Chris is a little bit nervous, he feels like he's but Chris, it'll be fine.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: We have very polite listeners.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: The only one who's root is me, as sometimes Phil.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: So don't worry.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: Just Phil asked why you think Y1 is a success.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Why is it a success?
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, flipping out why I can't remember this.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: Um, you signed Juke Demol a couple years ago, he grew the brand, and now it's got that tough question.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Chris, come on, you're on our podcast.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: Hype us up a bit.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: You've got Phil from the get-go, he pushed it, and I took it to another level.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I should have just left you to tell the story for us, yeah.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Um, I think I think it's one just it's just like being authentic and not doing quick, you know, quick wins.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: We're not trying to cut corners and like do these quick wins and that sort of thing.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: And you know, we've always yeah, I guess, yeah, when you talk about signing players, we're always thinking about the long term, and like we think we when we sign a player, it's always thinking about that player's never gonna leave.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Like, that's the whole you know, thesis or idea behind signing a player.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: We're not thinking let's get that quick win.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, I guess that's it, just staying authentic, and also just absolutely loving the sport and being part of it.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: The fact that Tom's still playing at a high level for OGs, um, I'm still playing every week, not uh not at a high level.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Um I think just living and breathing it is like super important.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Um and also just never looking at your competitors.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Like I never I'm you know, I'm never looking at the competitors.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Like you're you're you're but you're basically you know you're you're always you're competing against yourself.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: That's the way I look at it.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Um I think I think that helps.
- 7:42SPEAKER_06: Nice.
- 7:43SPEAKER_06: I yeah, I mean if I'm ever selling what I want, which I do quite a lot, I always say like that you're you're guys who always wanna innovate, you know, you're there for the for the for the young players making it look cool.
- 7:56SPEAKER_06: It's it's always like I can pick up the calls, Chris and Tom, and say, like, I've got this cool new idea.
- 8:01SPEAKER_06: And their first response is always like, Yeah, sick, let's let's find a way to do it.
- 8:05SPEAKER_06: And I always think that that's something that that you guys are pretty pretty great at.
- 8:09SPEAKER_06: But um do you want to tell us very quickly about do or sorry, not very quickly, but the the you do you want to tell us about your stick or do you want to let Chris tell us about it?
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let yeah let you yeah, let you tell it.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: He's nervous, he's already he's very different.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: They're giving the question to me.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: It's your your it's your stick, yeah.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: It's true, it's true.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: No, I'll tell about it.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: So uh um it started with me being a bit uh a bit jealous at uh at Hendrix, uh, because he had his own stick.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: I think it was before or after Tokyo.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Um he got like the gold stick and shit.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: And I was like uh I always thought I'm not I'm not a big enough player to have my own stick, but I thought if you don't sometimes you gotta gamble a bit.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: And I thought if you're uh if you're a bit in Dutch, we say um uh uh that if you're like a bit not rude, but if you like ask, if you don't ask, you don't get.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: So I just texted Chris at a certain point.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: I said, Chris, you know what?
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: I have an idea.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Why don't we make a yug the mot stick?
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Chris, like every idea you put you pitch to Chris, I think, is like fuck it, let's do it.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Let's see what it comes.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Um so we made like this uh idea of an uh of an uh of a stick, and it was just uh it started with like the JDM stick or whatever.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: After winning the gold uh uh and being in the nomination, I thought okay, it's a good time to now like get my own stick together with Y1.
- 9:31SPEAKER_06: Push the Yupe Demol brand, yeah.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: Push the Yupe Demol brand.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's it's at this it's at its peak, it won't get any higher than it is than it was back then.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Uh it's only downhill from there.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Let's make the most out of it.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: So I attacked Chris Chris was on board, but then I actually thought let's put it to some good use and let's actually make a really cool stick about uh about it.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: So we came up with a design together.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: It's in the same, like kind of in the same design as the scan scandi scandi.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: What's the correct pronunciation?
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Scandi Scandy uh uh stick line, except it doesn't have the color look on it.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm uh very uh about it, and uh and I like uh clean design uh myself, even though it looked really cool, but it's just out of uh pure preference.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but then we came up with like this colorway, this silver and red colorway, and I thought let's do it with a good idea behind it.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: So then Chris counted me and said, I have a really cool idea, let's do like the Tony Hawk, because that's where we got the inspiration from.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: It's already like a little bit of a sneak peek of what we're getting with a really cool video, Chris and uh Young Mancy, who's a video maker, the same video maker we talk about a lot in this podcast, uh, for Oranio Hockey.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Uh so we came up with this idea.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Uh I won't I won't spoil it, but it's oh no, go on, go on.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: We can we can we can spoil it, we can spoil it.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, I guess I so I called you.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: And I guess when I get ideas, I'm not I'm basically looking at other industries, and I saw that Tony Hawk had done a collaboration with Liquid Death, the like water company, and they signed him to do like an advert for them, and he didn't read the contract.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: And essentially, they were gonna take Tony Hawk's blood and put it in these limited edition skateboards.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: And I was like, You, you know, the original idea was like, you you know, getting a gold medal, what does that mean?
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Yes, we can have gold on the stick, but getting a gold medal takes blood, sweat, and tears.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: So, like, let's put your blood, sweat, and tears in the stick.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And you was like on board with it, and then we started talking about the campaign and like how do we actually do this?
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: And what we realized is actually getting Yupe's tears and his sweat was gonna be like it's gonna be a bit tricky.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: I was like, how do I make you cry?
- 11:44SPEAKER_06: That's not hard, that's not hard.
- 11:46SPEAKER_06: Just call him in jail.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we basically scaled it back from the blood, sweat, and tears to just blood, and then so essentially we took some of his blood, took it to the factory, and put it in the blood in the red paint.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah.
- 12:04SPEAKER_06: Did you actually do that?
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there genuinely is like a little bit of blood.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: It's not a lot, it's like a just uh an ins.
- 12:12SPEAKER_06: I don't think it was I thought this was like a marketing stunt.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: You actually did that.
- 12:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah, 100 sticks.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Wow, violet vial vial or test tube?
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like it's only like a hundred sticks, so it's not a lot, but we we just like the sticks are being made as we speak.
- 12:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh uh I was gonna say because if it was more than that, you'd be like done for blood doping, like one of them tall frantics.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: It's like 12 liters of blood.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: No, it's like it's it's just a little thing, but it's just for the for the idea of it.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Uh and we thought it'd be cool to actually do it.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: So there's a little bit of blood in it.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, so the sweat and the tears, you just have to think with it.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Um uh, so so that's actually in it.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, but then also we had this really cool idea, uh uh, because I spoke about it a little bit, and that's the cool thing about Chris is um um I said, you know what, there's the uh last year a lot happened, uh also uh not for me, like personally, a little bit, but with Kaiser Maybu, also your old teammate uh uh Phil.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: He's also a Y1 athlete, uh played with Y1 also for quite a while already.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Uh and as I already told in the uh in the podcast, he uh suffered from uh uh I don't know from cancer, but I don't know what's the word for a tumor.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: Is that also English?
- 13:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: He had a tumor in his leg.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: Um he's gone through all the chemotherapy and he's now uh uh completely healthy uh again.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Uh and his ambition is to come back onto the field um once.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: But I saw up close what it did to him and how what he went through.
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: So uh I'm playing myself with his.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: We had this logo made with OR.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Uh you might have seen it on like the socials that we ran out uh with a shirt for Mary.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: And I'm actually playing this year with Mary's logo on my stick, and uh, I think it's pretty cool that Chris said, I said to Chris, you know what, why don't we just give a small percentage of the sales of the stick to uh cancer research?
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: And uh the guy Chris is immediately said, you know what, let's do 10% so that we can actually help as Y1 and help with the stick uh with my name on it.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: I think it's pretty cool.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: It's a series.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: Did I explain it correctly?
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: So 10 yeah, 10% of revenue um yeah, going to cancer research.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, I think um another reason for people to get behind it.
- 14:29SPEAKER_06: I was just about to say we haven't actually even plugged it.
- 14:31SPEAKER_06: It's like get on to can you buy it on the Y1 website?
- 14:34SPEAKER_06: I'm assuming you can.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: On yeah, so we launched it on the 31st of July, so that's like a week before the euro starts, and then people using it in the Euros.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, it's all key key information, Dice, isn't it?
- 14:46SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: So 31st of July goes live, we've got 106.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Um and pretty first go first, yeah.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Pretty cool as well.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: We saw in the Instagram community we've got that there was like 850 people that were like want to see it, and um because we're also launching a Yuli Yankunas stick, and I don't know if you saw in the Instagram community, yeah, you had like 800 people that wanted to see it, and she only had 100.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: So um the Yup De Mole brand is going strong.
- 15:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I'm starting to feel a little bit left out now.
- 15:16SPEAKER_06: Yuli Yankunas has got a stick, she just rocks up, she's got a stick, but you know.
- 15:20SPEAKER_06: I know, Phil.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: We're gonna do that, we're gonna do that limitation headband.
- 15:24SPEAKER_06: Oh, here we go.
- 15:28SPEAKER_06: I think that's better than a stick, I think.
- 15:30SPEAKER_06: PR15 headband, I'll take it.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Um, seriously that's one like that's one thing because we wanted to because that's what we wanted it to really be distinct.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: So I think the Yankuna stick has like her logo on it, but it has like the the the the head with like the the the sprayed head, which is like very distinct for Y1 uh for this for this range, which I think is like really cool because it really sets Y1 apart.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Um and you could see like if you're just scouting the match, even if you're watching on TV, you can immediately see who plays with Y-1, which I think is really cool.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: But we actually kind of chose on purpose not to do that for this one to make it really distinct within the line, if I say that correctly, right, Chris?
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: That's it really, really stands out.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: And then and we've got it at two different levels.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Um, so there's the 100% carbon version, and then um, and then we have a 60% carbon version as well.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: So it's like we have for different, you know, for juniors can also buy it as well.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: So it's not just the top spec, which is good.
- 16:30SPEAKER_06: Okay, well, you heard it here first, 31st of July.
- 16:34SPEAKER_06: There's only a hundred going, 850 people interested.
- 16:36SPEAKER_06: We're we're now sticking this out on the podcast, so they're gonna go hot.
- 16:40SPEAKER_06: And I know James Aubrey is uh is is keen to have a wire kit to get a stick.
- 16:45SPEAKER_06: So orbs, I know you're listening.
- 16:47SPEAKER_06: You better you better get one quick or message or message Chris and make it 99.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know what?
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: I always knew from the minute I started playing orbs that he was a fan.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: I'll I I always knew.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: It's good to know.
- 17:00SPEAKER_06: He actually just he just came up to me and was like, have you seen Yupes' new stick?
- 17:04SPEAKER_06: It looks so sick.
- 17:04SPEAKER_06: I really want one.
- 17:05SPEAKER_06: And I was like, Yeah, fair.
- 17:07unknown: Fair.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: That's kudos.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: That's kudos to Chris, because I gave him a really vague idea of a stick which I think would look cool.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: And Chris actually went nuts with it and did like a really I because I really really like it.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: It looks really cool, even with like the gold, because there had to be some gold in it, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: Phil?
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, just like a bit of detail.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you you did message me like three days ago being like, I need more sticks for the euros.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Um so I've been scrambling to um sort you a couple of sticks.
- 17:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:38SPEAKER_06: Um what's what's what else would you like to touch on, Chris?
- 17:41SPEAKER_06: Is there anything that you're like um what else has Y1 got coming up?
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Coming up, I mean, I guess, yeah, with this 10-year anniversary, um, we want to do some sort of event for the community.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: So we're looking at hiring out like a full paddle centre in London.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Um, probably yeah, towards the end of August, we're looking at like maybe Thursday, the I think it's Thursday, the 28th of August.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: We're looking to hire a paddle centre in London and just invite down anyone who's been part of the brand, you know, you know, loosely or really connected.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: So we basically want to invite everyone and anyone down, come along for free, play some paddle, have some drinks.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, so I will yeah, keen to keen to know if one if people are up for coming coming along um for a bit of a social.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: So I'll put something out there, and uh yeah, that'd be cool.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And then the other thing is I was thinking about um something like the Euros for the final weekend.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: I was thinking about like an after party because I just remember the night you guys won the Olympics, no one knew where they were going.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Like it was very you had you had the Dutch house, and that was epic.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: And then after that, we're just like wandering the streets of Paris.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And I was like, surely after the you got the bronze men's broad medal game and then you've got the men's final the Saturday night.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: What do you guys think?
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: After party?
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Like hire out a nightclub, get get loads of bottles?
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: You guys don't like to over egg where you're gonna finish in the tournament.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: I will never say no to that.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: If I'm also welcome, if we end up fourth or if we get out in the group stage, I'm always happy to I'll I'll never say no to a couple bottles, Chris.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: You know me.
- 19:24SPEAKER_06: I'm not gonna lie, I don't think anyone is anyone is gonna reject that idea, Chris.
- 19:28SPEAKER_06: If you're like we've hired out this, and you know, on the finals day, there's what the only problem is, I guess, is that there's two different finals days.
- 19:35SPEAKER_06: The women the men's finals days on the Saturday, the women's on the Sunday, so you might have to do it twice.
- 19:40SPEAKER_06: So yeah, you expect yourself for a big one for you.
- 19:44SPEAKER_06: But I mean, anyone, any one of the men playing on the on the Saturday plus any of the qualification teams are not going to say no to being like, Oh, let's go.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, get all the fans down.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: I've been I've been trying to chat to nightclubs in Munch and Gladbat, but I'm not getting very far.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: My my German isn't that good.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: So I need Toby, Toby Walter to help me out and uh call them up and speak speak German to them.
- 20:07SPEAKER_06: I like your I love I love the fact that you just haven't got this picture of you in a Y1 office, basically, just like what's Chris doing?
- 20:13SPEAKER_06: What's what's what's all that founder doing?
- 20:15SPEAKER_06: Oh, he's just talking to German nightclubs, it's pretty important right now.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: I do think if you if that that Toby is the perfect guy to fix this, I know he knows his way around.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he knows everyone, he's quick.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: You get he gets shit done.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'll get I'll get him on it and we'll get it, we'll get it going.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: So any anyone attending the Euros, if you're there, stay tuned.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: We're gonna have something cool coming.
- 20:39SPEAKER_06: Why won't why we're only gonna sort out your nightlife needs?
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and um one sports warehouse, great sponsorship, been loving that.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: We all we do we've actually made a limited edition stick with one sports warehouse, which I've not I've not shouted about, so I guess since I've sponsored the pod, it's worth bringing up.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: Um so we've done a limited edition LBX with OneSports Warehouse, um, and it they basically picked this like teal blue colourway.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: So, like, yeah, that's kind of cool.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Um, for sure.
- 21:10SPEAKER_06: I mean, we love the guys at One Sports Warehouse, don't we?
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: We love it.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: If he didn't go on it, let's go for One Sports Warehouse, right?
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: I do have to pitch in real quick because we're on the pod.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: So basically, you're saying almost everyone is getting their own signature stick except for Phil.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: He gets headbent.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Um Phil, Phil, Phil, we've done one in the past, haven't we?
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: We did that.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: Um I mean that was quite a few years ago.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: You know the one um where we donate.
- 21:40SPEAKER_06: We we made a pink one.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: That was Brendan's stick, the Brendan B Brend B U stick.
- 21:47SPEAKER_06: Brendan P U.
- 21:48SPEAKER_06: No, we did it we did a we did a pink one because I was I you didn't have pink and I said let's do a pink one for the twenty eighteen World Cup.
- 21:55SPEAKER_06: And we made a few and we donated stuff to charity.
- 21:57SPEAKER_06: It was never the it was never the PR fifteen.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: But it was it was it was a nice it was a nice cool thing.
- 22:02SPEAKER_06: I've just to let you know I'm I'm perfectly happy with my headband.
- 22:05SPEAKER_06: We just make the headband happen.
- 22:06SPEAKER_06: I'm I'm cool with that.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: I've tried I've tried to do loads of stuff in the past.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: I remember I think this was before like an Olympics.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: I was like messaging proper corn, the you know, the popcorn company, and I was like, I've got this athlete, his his Instagram handle is proper.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Your proper your proper corn, like this is gonna be amazing.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: It's got completely blanked.
- 22:25SPEAKER_06: Um you know I have thought I have thought about that before because there's this the the only other company that I could think of was Conan McGregor's whiskey.
- 22:33SPEAKER_06: And I was like, I don't reckon he's gonna be that keen on sponsoring me.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: You never know, just give a shout out.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: He seems like a very reasonable guy, we've got no well this is but this has been seriously cool.
- 22:48SPEAKER_06: I like um I like memories of Y1, how how it's gone through, how it's gone through the it's it's it's gone from strength to strength over the last 10 years.
- 22:57SPEAKER_06: Absolutely love talking to you, Chris.
- 22:59SPEAKER_06: We're gonna we're gonna move on.
- 23:00SPEAKER_06: Are you gonna stick around?
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'll yeah, I'll stick, I'll stick around.
- 23:04SPEAKER_06: Um that's actually a good it's a good cool wall edition, you sorry.
- 23:08SPEAKER_06: If you heard our our previous podcast, uh James Aubrey brought in the cool wool um from the from the old top gear episodes.
- 23:16SPEAKER_06: It'd be like having your own stick.
- 23:17SPEAKER_06: Is that is that cool?
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the epitome of cool.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: That's ice cold.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: Ice cold.
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: Having your own stick.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: That's that's the dream, right, Chris?
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: Back me up here.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: No, if you if you now say that it's not cool, Phil, you're so fucking bitter.
- 23:38SPEAKER_06: You you you've got me all wrong.
- 23:40SPEAKER_06: I'm very happy for you, and I'm super super buzzed about that.
- 23:43SPEAKER_06: What I was gonna say was like I started talking, and I know that and I don't know if she listens, but she's not gonna enjoy this.
- 23:49SPEAKER_06: Is Anna Tomen has the AT6 glove.
- 23:53SPEAKER_06: Now, I would say that that probably doesn't make a cool wool.
- 24:00SPEAKER_06: If if I had a glove, I well, I could never have a glove named after me because my left-handed have to somehow get on the floor occasionally.
- 24:07SPEAKER_06: But I would say that's not quite as cool as having your own stick.
- 24:11SPEAKER_02: Also, I'm gonna say, now that I think about it, asking for your own signature stick might be a little less cool than the company coming to you with, you know what, we have an idea, we want to make your signature stick.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: That might be, to be honest, that that makes it a little less cool.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: But the stick itself, I think, is is really cool.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I'd actually forgotten which order of events it went in.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: So you came to the club.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Let's say you I thought you yeah, let's say you came to me.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: Let's put it at that yeah, an AT6 Club, yeah.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: We're just terrible at name, we're just really terrible at naming products, and actually, athletes' initials uh just make it easy.
- 24:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, not that that's not cool, Chris.
- 24:50SPEAKER_06: I'm not having a go at the AT6 Club.
- 24:52SPEAKER_06: It's just I was saying that like it's not quite you know the hype of you know, I wouldn't like shinpads named after me.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: No, no, but you you've always been involved in product development, we just haven't named after you.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: But you you have been giving feedback on it, and we've been creating a new mold based on your feedback about the backhand edge.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: So maybe that one that needs to be the PR 15.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I love how Chris is trying to make it up to Phil for like Chris.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Like Chris is never asked for a stick.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: You know what, Chris?
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: I'm begging you.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Let Phil win a tournament first and prove himself a bit more before he gets his own stick.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: Be planting, Chris.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: You can only win the uni.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, win the Euros.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, fuck you, Phil.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Win win something and you get your own stick.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: Um don't start bitching now.
- 25:39SPEAKER_06: I I have not bitched at all.
- 25:41SPEAKER_06: I'm perfectly happy.
- 25:42SPEAKER_06: I'm really not not not after my own stick.
- 25:46SPEAKER_06: I think that ship has sailed.
- 25:47SPEAKER_06: If anyone wants everyone from young ones wants an old guy stick, doesn't make that much sense, does it?
- 25:53SPEAKER_06: It's not as quite marketable.
- 25:56SPEAKER_06: But we could find we can find we can find something.
- 25:58SPEAKER_06: If we win a gold medal, I'll I'll come back and be on the pod, and I'll get Chris on and we'll talk about our we'll talk about our our journey and where we go to.
- 26:06SPEAKER_06: What I was gonna very quickly touch on was just to sum up the pro league before we go to a break, which was that if if you tuned into the pro league again, played you again in London, it was lovely.
- 26:20SPEAKER_06: Um we we England didn't have a great second half of the pro league, um, ended up finishing seventh.
- 26:27SPEAKER_06: But on the women's side, just to sum it up, the Netherlands won obviously, Argentina second and Belgium third, with Yibi Jansen being the top goalscorer, which is a hugely shocking revelation there.
- 26:40SPEAKER_06: Um on the men's side, the Dutch won it again um with a few games to spare.
- 26:47SPEAKER_06: You've got a nice smirk on his face, Belgium came second, and then a very surprised Spain came third, which actually also meant that they picked up the World Cup qualification spot for next year, with Tom Bone scoring 21 goals, which is pretty pretty impressive.
- 27:05SPEAKER_06: Um I was just gonna talk quickly about the pro league.
- 27:09SPEAKER_06: You what what what stood out for you?
- 27:11SPEAKER_06: You again the champion for the third time, maybe?
- 27:14SPEAKER_06: Third time, I'm not sure.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Third time here, I think four years, five times.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, it's it's it's very weird to become uh champions when you're not uh when you haven't played, if that makes sense.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: So that you you you're on the couch and you get uh you get a text, uh the the don't even know Germany lost or whatever, uh or Belgium lost.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, we're champions, and then the most um typical hockey thing is that we all say this.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: We had our break.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: So we had our holiday for the people who didn't watch or uh didn't see it.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: Uh so we had our break right after uh our final proli game, so right after we played uh uh GB was, I think.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, GB, not England.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: England, yeah, but GB.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Um we actually uh got like our holiday, like our holiday for this period.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: So everyone I think our whole team went on a holiday, uh anywhere or every and everywhere.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: So I was in Japan, guys were in South Africa, whatever.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Everyone was on their holiday, or even in Italy or whatever.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: Um, and but we actually had to pick up our trophy during our holiday, so there was almost no one there except for our video guy, um uh Jeroen Delmey, uh Kun Baeya and Timo Boos.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Those were the only guys who were there.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: So uh the the Dutch women got that trophy and it was like all fun.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: And yeah, for them it's also they're also kind of bored picking up trophies, I think, by now.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: Uh not also, but they're bored picking up trophies by now.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: But we only had four guys who who were, and it seemed very uh arrogant of us, uh, that only four guys were there.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: But to be honest, like everyone's on was on holiday, and you don't kind of you don't really calculate because we weren't that like I think it was the most fun pro league standings-wise there has been in a while.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: Like it's what's the because I think seven teams were within two points when the pro leagues restarted, and then it was back and forth, back and forth.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: We actually did really well, and I think we won because of because we did really well in shootouts.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: That's why we won.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: Because I think we got like six bonus points uh this tournament.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Uh so that like made our day.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, but it was a weird, it was a weird tournament that you that like winning on your couch is very weird.
- 29:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I would say it is quite classic hockey that that's how it how how it kind of got to end, and also the weird thing that you kind of finished two weeks before everyone else finished most teams finished.
- 29:45SPEAKER_06: I think there's got to be something that they put in some effort into like maybe the finals again, the pro league finals, which happened in the first year, where you like actually have something that happens at the end.
- 29:55SPEAKER_06: Um, because like it does all it feels a little bit like meh at the end, like not just like I assume this is for everyone to be honest with you, because you're like, Oh, when's it finishing?
- 30:06SPEAKER_06: We don't actually know.
- 30:07SPEAKER_06: Like, they have to think up something where you're like, okay, there's at least an exciting end to this pro league.
- 30:11SPEAKER_06: Chris, what what do you think?
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: I I think as a spectator, it's it's hard to follow and really know what's on the line.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, I guess two things.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, one is a spectator, yeah, you need that final event to actually make it like an actual tournament and feel important, and then also like I don't know, just the standings and the volume of games at different times.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Like, I just find it really hard.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm in the industry and I still don't really get it.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, I just find that a bit weird.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: Because I think if I don't get it, how does the the average girl have they?
- 30:47SPEAKER_06: We're playing, and I don't really get it.
- 30:49SPEAKER_06: Like, we're playing it, and I'm like, oh, there's more games, there's this happen, there's that, and then like it's not ex it's not exciting because you don't actually know, like, oh, but they're they're winning, but they've got four games in hand.
- 30:58SPEAKER_06: Oh, they're losing, but they've got six games to go.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's just yeah, that that bit's confusing.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, what you're what's it what's it like what's it like to play in?
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Like, what's it are there points when it gets really exciting?
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: You know, what's it like doing a shootout?
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Does it feel like training, or is it uh or you know, or is it or does it feel like a selection process?
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: Like no, it's it's it's different than that.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: It's I think a lot of teams really use it as a chance to like everyone now uses it as a chance to like get talent in, so make the step towards like to bring in talent.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: So in that way, it helps.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: The only thing I don't really like about it is because of the scheduling, and because there are so many games packed into like small um periods, you're kind of forced to put in talent, you're kind of forced to make get guys to get there to make their debut, and I think wearing England, hot, Dutch, Belgium, whatever shirt should be something very special, and all all teams are kind of forced to like make a really big selection.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: And uh, if you have like, for instance, I think Phil had the same.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: We have eight games in 12 days.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: You can't play eight games in 12 days with 20 guys.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Some guys guys will get injured, guys will get sore legs, guys.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: The risk of injury is bigger.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Um, I think if you tell a football player that you play eight games in 12 days, I think uh they'll get injured at the thought of it, even.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: So, like that makes it really weird.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: So, you uh you you want to win the pro league, don't get me wrong, everyone wants to win the pro league, I think, but not at the cost of everything and anything, it's like different than a tournament, but makes it a bit tough.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: I think I um I'm a bigger fan of bringing it back champions, so for instance, and I like the World League idea, the World League setup, hockey world league better than I do the Pro League, but that's my opinion.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: I get I get because the whole idea of the pro league was that everyone plays home and away games.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: That was how it started.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: We want to grow the game of hockey, so you play a home and away game, but now um you really play home and a game, you put twice in the nation and you have like three meat tournaments, but I don't really like that set, I'll be honest.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Because it's not a tournament, it's just games, yeah.
- 33:10SPEAKER_06: It doesn't, it doesn't it just doesn't lend in to like a spectator or like the consumer, like what they actually want because you're just not getting out of it what you're putting in.
- 33:21SPEAKER_06: There's a whole load of money being put in, there's a whole load so many, so much effort from the teams and the organizations and the NGBs, but the nothing like I don't feel like we're getting anything out of it.
- 33:30SPEAKER_06: Like the games do feel like games, you feel like you're playing the game.
- 33:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's definitely not the same like when you line up for a shootout as you would be at a Europeans or a World Cup or an Olympics, it's just not the same.
- 33:41SPEAKER_06: Like you want to win, but there isn't that there's still like the spice in a game, and you still really want to score, but like it's just not quite good.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: But I guess it's good they have put that shootout element in.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: I guess that's unique, you know.
- 33:54SPEAKER_00: Um, and that because I can give you practice for these bigger tournaments.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: Um I would also say I would say massive hats off to England hockey.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: Like, I think they they cut a lot of they get a lot of slack.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Um, but like it was packed out, the venue, you know, and a lot of the days, like I remember messing you last minute trying to get a ticket, you know, and like people were like, no, it's properly sold out, which is which is rare.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: And so yeah, I did think that I did think that was really impressive.
- 34:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we had six home games and and for for five or five five of them were basically sold out.
- 34:27SPEAKER_06: Um the one that wasn't was like a like an 8 p.m.
- 34:30SPEAKER_06: Wednesday game um against the Dutch.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was against us.
- 34:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 34:34SPEAKER_06: The other games were packed out, had a great, like, yeah, great atmosphere.
- 34:38SPEAKER_06: So yeah, they did do did do do super stuff.
- 34:40SPEAKER_06: Um I guess this is a much bigger topic than we've than we've than we've touched on.
- 34:44SPEAKER_06: We just wanted to touch on the pro league and probably we'll we can come back to that, it's kind of kind of cool, but we're gonna come back with a uh with a Euros preview after the break.
- 34:53SPEAKER_06: CNSEC.
- 34:57SPEAKER_06: And we're back we've lost Chris, just me and Yup for part two, where we're just gonna do a Euros review.
- 35:07SPEAKER_06: Um first of all like excited for the Euros?
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be my fifth Euros.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Um is it your sixth?
- 35:20SPEAKER_06: Fifth as well.
- 35:22SPEAKER_06: I I managed to make a reserve for the both 2013 and 2015, which I'm not bitter about at all.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, so it's gonna be my fifth, which is kinda insane to say you're playing your fifth Euros makes you feel old.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I'm uh uh defending title and same ground, which is like really cool, which I've never had to experience.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: Defending a title.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I've to be honest, I have experienced that, but I've haven't really really had that.
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: Um I do think it's weird saying the same tournament in the same exact venue, and like we're in the same hotel, same venue, same vibe, and everything's like the same, which I is kind of cool because you know, or kind of nice because you know what you're getting, but I also think it's yeah, like it's not it's not new, if that makes sense.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: Like everything is like it's a bit it's a weird feeling, to be honest.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: I think too, and I I actually had to um wouldn't say a rival podcast, but uh Ernst Barth, for some of you who know, is the father of uh Sonderbah, he does a podcast himself, which we've been a guest on uh once.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: Um he asked me to send in a question.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm going a bit off topic, but I'm getting back to it, don't worry.
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: Uh I had to send in a question for Autogeslova about the Euros because he's doing also kind of a Euro preview.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: And my question for him was like, Do you think we should how do we grow the game of hockey if we don't switch venues more often?
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: I feel like in my career, it's been like I've played two Euros in Holland, I've played two Euros in Munich Glampach, and I've played one in Belgium.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: Uh both World Cups in my have been in Huberschwa and one was in Rukina.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Um like it's been various tournaments and rough, I get it, but like the big ones have always been in kind of the same venues.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: I think it's way cooler if you like would have done it in England again, or went to Spain, or went to Germany, or you know what I mean?
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: And it's always a bit the same.
- 37:30SPEAKER_06: I could I couldn't I couldn't agree more.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: I think uh it's in Germany now.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: Sorry, it's in Germany now, but like you know what I mean.
- 37:36SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:37SPEAKER_06: I mean it's much my note was munching glad back again.
- 37:41SPEAKER_06: Question mark.
- 37:42SPEAKER_06: Like, what why why does it have to be again?
- 37:44SPEAKER_06: It's a seriously cool stadium, it was a good Euros, really enjoyed it.
- 37:48SPEAKER_06: But I think also for the fans, like, is two years long enough to wait to go again?
- 37:52SPEAKER_06: Because like, are you gonna get the same experience?
- 37:54SPEAKER_06: Like, are people actually gonna come and watch again?
- 37:57SPEAKER_06: Are you gonna get that huge crowd for Germany again?
- 37:59SPEAKER_06: I I I don't know.
- 38:00SPEAKER_06: I'm just questioning it.
- 38:02SPEAKER_06: It is it is a uh a good location in terms of like Belgians, Dutch people can go and watch.
- 38:08SPEAKER_06: Um, it's just kind of across the border, but I just don't think I think you're totally right.
- 38:12SPEAKER_06: Like, why couldn't we do it in a different location?
- 38:15SPEAKER_06: And I do think you've touched on something else, which is like I've played countless times at Amstelveen in Amsterdam, and I and I absolutely love it, it's one of my favourite places to play.
- 38:26SPEAKER_06: But like in Holland, you are blessed with so many amazing pitches and stadiums and options that I just don't understand why you wouldn't branch out a little bit.
- 38:35SPEAKER_06: Like we played our pro league for the first time in Campong last year, it's a seriously cool place to play.
- 38:41SPEAKER_06: I've done EHLs in Eindhoven, which I absolutely loved.
- 38:45SPEAKER_06: Like you've got Rotterdam, which is another great stadium.
- 38:48SPEAKER_06: Um, it just doesn't I know I'm doing that on a small scale because what you've said is also is also bang on around the world, but just even small, small little changes would would make a difference.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so the thing is now because they did a joint bid together with Belgium, um they're actually like they have to kind of divide the games, so it's not like worth it to like go to like let's say 2014, go to a football stadium because it's not wouldn't be profitable.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: That's why they didn't go, and I think it's just out of sheer ease.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: They like know how to get Amsterdam packed, they know how to like extend the stadium.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: So in the World Cup, it'll probably be like you won't really recognize the the Wagner as it is, because they're gonna build like huge stands, and it's actually gonna be like 15,000, uh 15, not 50, 15,000 people that will fit into it, or like 1213.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: Um, and they know how to like do it.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: So I think it's a bit out of ease, but also because like by change you know it works, uh then in the 2018 for the 1222 World Cup for the women was also Amsterdam, uh, and in Spain, I think.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh do I have that right?
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: So right, yeah.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: So for the women, it's again back a back-to-back World Cup.
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: So in the last uh uh four editions, uh three have been in Holland, and I think that's just that's I get that Holland is especially in on the women's side, like the the the main place to play women's hockey because you know pristine will get um because of the polarity of or of our female plays.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: But I don't think it's that that's not how we get our nations more involved, if that makes sense.
- 40:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 40:37SPEAKER_06: And like I yeah, I'm sure there's a million barriers in the way of how to of how to do it.
- 40:42SPEAKER_06: Like, love to play a tournament, like I've played one a tournament in Australia with the Commonwealth Games Gold Coast, which was absolutely insane, insanely good.
- 40:51SPEAKER_06: I believe that like playing in Malaysia.
- 40:53SPEAKER_06: I've we've done two tournaments in Ipo in Malaysia, and they were they were really, really cool.
- 40:58SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, I'd love to a tournament in Argentina surely is a possibility.
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: Or yeah.
- 41:04SPEAKER_06: Um I know that England wraps up.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: I just think it has to do with money, it's 100% has to do with money because if you now see like a New Zealand, because that's something I wanted to touch on, but we kind of run out of time, like New Zealand backing out of the pro league again.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: Um and they say it's because it doesn't fit in their schedule.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: I think it the only reason they can't do it is just it doesn't fit because they don't have enough money because it takes a shitload of money to uh to travel around the world with the whole team.
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: I don't think we are both fortunate enough to play for uh uh uh in brackets wealthy um federation, but I think there's a lot of federations which don't have that money or don't are not willing to put in that money.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: I think there's not a lot of nations who are willing to like organize a tournament.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: I don't know how profitable it is to organize a tournament, to be honest.
- 41:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't think it is that that profitable.
- 41:54SPEAKER_06: No, and and like you say, you probably need the infrastructure already there.
- 41:57SPEAKER_06: I know that England were absolutely devastated to miss out on the World Cup bid for next year because they put together a serious amount of effort to kind of bid.
- 42:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, the finals were gonna be in Tottenham Stadium.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like that's what I thought I don't get.
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: You have like this, you have such a cool bid, you have such like a new new place, a kind of new place, especially for men's hockey.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: I've never played a tournament in England.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: Um you you miss out on a chance to do it, and it will be a very world cup, the Holland Algium.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: I think every game or like a lot of games get packed.
- 42:31SPEAKER_02: Um especially because you also have like the double, you have like two teams in it, two good teams on both sides who who are bots are brother tool is has to make at least semis.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: So you have like returns like England would be cool, especially since how you see how England is growing and growing with the hockey.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a shame.
- 42:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and also we we managed to.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: So it will be very cool.
- 42:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it will be.
- 43:00SPEAKER_06: But we managed to actually, I know the twenty eighteen women's world cup was in England, and that was a huge success.
- 43:05SPEAKER_06: They had a 10,000 seater stadium, and they had huge popularity for it.
- 43:09SPEAKER_06: So the kind of it is kind of there in England as well, which surprised me.
- 43:12SPEAKER_06: But what we've got off topic, we've we've we've run away from we're talking about the Europeans.
- 43:18SPEAKER_06: So just to give people information is that is that there's there's in the women's and the men's, there's two groups of four.
- 43:25SPEAKER_06: Uh, the top two, everyone plays each other in a round robin in your group, and then your top two go from uh into the semi-finals and finals.
- 43:33SPEAKER_06: Um it's interesting this year because um this will be the first time since 2017 that I know that England don't have a Spanish team in the in the in their side of the group, which means that basically in the in the men's side of the game, there is there is five very strong nations at the moment in the European state the Spain, England, H Holland, Belgium, and Germany.
- 43:56SPEAKER_06: So you p first of all, your pool.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: Which is you, Belgium, Spain, and Austria.
- 44:03SPEAKER_06: It's a bit of a it's it's gonna be uh some tasty games there.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so we're actually in the pool with uh Spain, Belgium, Austria, like you said.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Uh and it's always a bit of a plus up who gets uh but that it doesn't the last thing I want to do is be disrespectful to Spain, but there would it's always the last years who gets Spain in their pool.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: I feel like it's always uh I think uh uh ranking-wise, it's always been Holland, Belgium, Germany, and England who are like the top four in any like I don't know which order, but like in any order, and Spain has always been fifth in the ranking world ranking uh from the Europeans, so it's always some some of the other two will get Spain, uh, and you're always hoping you're not one of those two who get Spain because they're like a they're tough not to crack.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: Uh and this year it's us, and I feel especially because I think I think pro league standings, it was Holland one, I think Belgium was two, right?
- 44:56SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and Spain three.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so like the top three in the pro league is in the same pool at the Euros, which is kind of kind of tasty, and it like Euro or the Pro League is not really it's not a very uh um honest ranking because it's been through a whole year, uh, and like we said, people try out different players a lot and they see it as development more, but still it's like it's tough.
- 45:19SPEAKER_02: We start our tournament with with Spain.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: Uh if you lose that one, it's kind of shit to have to go up against Belgium and you have to win that one.
- 45:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 45:28SPEAKER_02: Uh uh, like we feel like we are the team to beat in our pool, to be honest.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: I feel like we're we're like our selection is not the same as in Paris, but like the main part of our team is like the Paris selection, a big part of our squad.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: Belgium kind of went through a new selection.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: I think Spain has a similar selection as they did in Paris.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I feel like we're like the team to beat a bit, which is a place we've never been in.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: That makes it a bit different for us.
- 45:55SPEAKER_02: Like, we've never been the team to beat.
- 45:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I think it will be really tasty to see because Belgium have obviously got this young, this younger team, which is marred with old with old still incredible experience.
- 46:06SPEAKER_06: You like you say, you already probably have like two or three players max that's different from from Paris.
- 46:12SPEAKER_06: And then Spain are on, like we see you've already said Spain are on the up, they're they're playing some really nice hockey and they're dangerous.
- 46:18SPEAKER_06: Like even we talk about it the in 2019 we got we actually didn't make the semi-finals because they we we actually messed up against Wales and then we drew with Spain, which meant that Spain went through on goal uh on on points, and then 2021 we had to scrape through and we had a horrendous last game against them, and then last time around in Munch and Gladbach, we again I think were 3-2 down and ended up winning 4-3, and then obviously went on to to make the final.
- 46:45SPEAKER_06: But it just shows basically on the men's side how tight the the um the the top top is also because last time you guys um didn't even make the final of the you didn't make the final of the world cup and then you ended up winning.
- 47:01SPEAKER_06: The final of the world cup was Germany-Belgium, which ended up being the bronze medal game last time, which was just again just showed how crazy strong it is.
- 47:08SPEAKER_06: On our side, we've got Germany, France and Poland, and England.
- 47:13SPEAKER_06: Um, and and I'm not I'm I I'm not also you know discounting France and Poland completely because I know that France are France are a new team that are really you know putting a lot into their team, and it's not gonna be an easy game in in any sense of the word.
- 47:28SPEAKER_06: Um but yeah, I'm I'm I'm definitely more comfortable having not seen Spain at this Europeans.
- 47:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's yeah, it's just uh it's just it's it's always with the Euros, and you always know there's like five teams really fighting for it.
- 47:44SPEAKER_02: And uh also feel kind of shit for Spain because they always have to like beat uh one of the top four teams.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: Like we're sometimes you're in like a luxury position, uh, as in if you're in the pool you're in and don't want to like jinx it for you guys, but like you always know there is a game you can lose, if that makes sense.
- 48:02SPEAKER_02: Like if you play, uh and it also it doesn't really matter if you end up first or or second in the group stage.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: It doesn't really matter to be honest, because on all of interos, always something weird happens, it also it also does.
- 48:15SPEAKER_02: Always not game which is like we had here I think once in 2019 that we thought uh we we I think we we ended up second in the pool, but Belgium kind of messed up their pool or something, and Spain actually ended up popping their pool or something.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: I don't know what exactly happened, but then we like we ended up getting Spain or we won the pool or whatever, and we we were kind of arrogant and happy with that.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, we're getting Spain.
- 48:42SPEAKER_02: It's like a back then, uh it's like a free ticket to the final, and we kind of we we lost and we lost big like it was 4-1 at a certain point.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: I think it ended being like 4-3, but like it was way bigger, so it's just a weird tournament.
- 48:53SPEAKER_02: Always funny shit happens, yeah.
- 48:55SPEAKER_06: And it's 100% worth like it's it's such a prestigious tournament, like so many reasons to tune in.
- 49:01SPEAKER_06: Um, is there any is there anyone that you would say is like a one to watch?
- 49:05SPEAKER_06: Like, I know that you you you can obviously be be uh biased towards towards Holland because you're obviously seeing seeing the guys, but is there anyone you're excited to watch at the tournament?
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: Like play playing um yeah, well, like in to be honest, like we as I said, we have kind of the same squad as we did towards Paris, but we do miss a couple of difference makers, like Jonas de Geos is not going with us, uh, because he's still like not a hundred percent, and Dell doesn't feel like he is at a hundred percent, and he's like, Okay, then other guys in search of the chart.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Duko Tempkop isn't there, which is all like a difference maker for us.
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: Uh back for his number, uh, and uh Montec.
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: So we're in like a different uh we're we're the same team, but we miss like Duco was the one who scored five goals last Euros.
- 49:52SPEAKER_02: So I'm curious if we can get like now we have Olivier Ortensius, young guy who plays for Rotterdam, um, who does some funny shit.
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: He's he's he's not like Duco, but he has the same like he has like a positive arrogance around him, as in that he he doesn't really care if he's against uh toenoir or a guy like Huguen de Mol, who's just like everything in between Toyneoy Huguen de M.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: I don't care who it is.
- 50:17SPEAKER_02: I'll just go.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: I'll just go at him.
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: Um which is which I really like in a striker.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: So I think he's he could he could like surprise a couple people.
- 50:27SPEAKER_02: I'm also curious about Belgium to be honest, because there is still like a shitload of quality there and a shitload of really good players with like Artie Vendora, Artou de Slover, Tom Bone, uh, Wenier, Kina.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: But there's also a lot of young guns, and guys, to be honest, I've I never really heard of because they only play in Belgium.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: So I'm curious how they will like piece together, and I think they're still really tough not to crack.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: And to be honest, I played a couple times against you, and both uh in the last couple as we also played a practice game.
- 50:55SPEAKER_02: Uh I think a guy, not a guy to watch, but I was positively surprised because I've never heard of him as a guy in your team.
- 51:02SPEAKER_02: I think is uh uh is uh it's the right back or the like a wing back, uh Fox, I think is his name.
- 51:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, Ben Fox.
- 51:09SPEAKER_06: So new on the same.
- 51:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's like a he's like an a very um uh modern day wing back.
- 51:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's like very comfortable on the ball, can can eliminate a guy as a as a defender.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: Um, so I was like positively like not surprised because I didn't have an expectation of him, but he's very uh I think he was uh a nice player.
- 51:32SPEAKER_06: I think that's a yeah, lovely one for us.
- 51:34SPEAKER_06: I think uh he's come in, uh got his debut in Argentina and has played really, really nicely.
- 51:41SPEAKER_06: It's pretty pretty nice, got very nice hands, good skills, attacking, very also a defensive beast.
- 51:47SPEAKER_06: So yeah, 100% a good man to watch.
- 51:49SPEAKER_06: And our other one, I guess, is is is is Hoops, Sam Hooper, um, who is who we've we've we've we've brought in a flicker um who he flicks the ball very hard.
- 52:00SPEAKER_06: So so again, pretty exciting um to see what he can do in their in their moments.
- 52:06SPEAKER_06: I think this is the thing, it's the first time since Paris where everyone's kind of like rebuilding or finding a new way to do it, and the Europeans is that first like really big challenge where the pressure's properly on to win a prestigious tournament, and and um and that's what you're always waiting to see, isn't it?
- 52:22SPEAKER_06: It's like who's gonna step up.
- 52:26SPEAKER_06: Um and yeah, the the women's side, we should touch on the women's pools.
- 52:31SPEAKER_06: Like so the first one is uh pool A is Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, and France.
- 52:36SPEAKER_06: Again, like it's it's hard to look past the Netherlands and Germany winning that, winning, winning that, winning that group.
- 52:44SPEAKER_06: Um, and then the pool B is is Belgium, England, Spain, and Scotland.
- 52:49SPEAKER_06: Um again, a little bit of a group of death there because Belgium, England and Spain.
- 52:55SPEAKER_06: I I don't I don't know what's in that at the moment.
- 52:58SPEAKER_06: Like I think they they they've all got a tough time on their hands.
- 53:01SPEAKER_06: You could uh you could tell me two of any of the three of them getting through, and I and I would I would say fair enough.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: You yeah, fair.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think Belgium is really I'm curious whether I think Holland's biggest opponent or biggest challenger now is Belgium on international stage.
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: I think they kind of bottled it at the at the at the Olympics.
- 53:24SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, point made.
- 53:28SPEAKER_02: I think they kind of bottled it at you believe, but I think they're like kind of were kind of on the rise.
- 53:32SPEAKER_02: So I'm curious if they can like push through and really make it tough on Holland.
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, they're just there's so much quality in the Dutch team, and I don't I I do I I've heard, but I we don't really see them that often right now.
- 53:45SPEAKER_02: But I've heard they're kind of they're there's like struggling fitness-wise, like not being in shape, but like uh a lot of injuries there.
- 53:53SPEAKER_02: Um so that might change their odds a bit, but yeah, it's yeah, again, like you said, it's uh it's tough to look past uh Holland as uh as the winner there.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: I think it's like that's why the why I like the men's side of the hockey so much, is because it's so unpredictable and any team can win.
- 54:10SPEAKER_02: Um and with women, it's there's there's one team for one has challenged, it's like this is a different way of looking at it.
- 54:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we need to we need that we need that other women's team to really come up and challenge challenge the Netherlands because it's been since you know really since 2016, nine years since someone actually actually properly properly challenged the Netherlands.
- 54:31SPEAKER_06: I think um yeah, and England, England women are in a in an interesting spot, um, eighth in the pro league, you know, in a bit of a transition, trying to find the new players.
- 54:41SPEAKER_06: I think that they have some exciting, exciting talents, but I will I will be very intrigued to see how they go uh against Belgium and Spain um to see if they can they can get through the group and then see if they can start building some momentum together.
- 54:53SPEAKER_06: I guess the same could be said for us after a after a struggle, a little bit of a struggle in the second half of the pro league, but I'm I'm confident with the team we're going with.
- 55:03SPEAKER_06: I think um I think everything's gonna be okay.
- 55:06SPEAKER_06: So you p I want your I want your top three women, uh gold, silver, bronze, and the the same for the men with also a top goal scorer, please.
- 55:18SPEAKER_02: Good one.
- 55:19SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm going um in the women's side.
- 55:22SPEAKER_02: I'm going uh like normally I want to go for like a like a cool bit, and I don't see any point in betting against uh the the the women the Dutch women.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: So I'm going Holland one, I'm going um Belgium two, and I'm going um Germany three.
- 55:42SPEAKER_02: Uh I think it's I think that's exactly the same as last time.
- 55:45SPEAKER_02: Um I think on the men's side, I think it will be uh I hope it will be Holland 1.
- 55:54SPEAKER_02: I think we have a pretty good shot at it.
- 55:56SPEAKER_02: Uh I think it's Holland 1.
- 55:58SPEAKER_02: I think we'll meet Belgium in the final and England will take third.
- 56:03SPEAKER_02: Uh I think they will upset the Germans uh again.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: I think it will be yeah, I think that's how it'll how it'll play out.
- 56:12SPEAKER_02: What about the top goal scores?
- 56:16SPEAKER_02: Top goal score on the women's side, surprise, surprise, it will be Yibi Jansen.
- 56:21SPEAKER_02: Uh she scores a record uh uh 17 goals out of five games.
- 56:31SPEAKER_02: Who heard it here first.
- 56:32SPEAKER_05: Is there any good goalkeeper who's worked her out yet?
- 56:35SPEAKER_06: I think on the men's side, you any goalie that's worked Yibi Jansen out because watching them they all do the same stuff.
- 56:45SPEAKER_06: I mean, I understand she's an amazing flicker, and honestly, watching her, she just is a cheat code, but watching all the keepers, they just they just cannot cannot get their head around it.
- 56:56SPEAKER_03: No, and I think the fear factor always also works in her favor.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: I think every goalie is kind of kind of uh scared or like kind of like oh shit, here she comes, like you know.
- 57:06SPEAKER_02: Uh did you watch uh did you watch Inglorious Bastards?
- 57:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's like the bear Jew.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: Like you oh here he comes, oh shit, you know what I mean?
- 57:21SPEAKER_03: That's a good that's a good Bill Simmons reference.
- 57:25SPEAKER_02: Love it.
- 57:25SPEAKER_02: I'm proud of that.
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: I'm proud of that one.
- 57:27SPEAKER_02: Uh so I think you'd be on I think on the men's side I'm curious what little Bob can team is for.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: I think he's like the odds on favorite.
- 57:39SPEAKER_05: Who is sorry?
- 57:40SPEAKER_05: Go say again.
- 57:46SPEAKER_02: Uh but I'm going in um a different direction.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: I'm going for another Belgian player, I'm going for Thibaut Stobbrooks.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: Scored scored a fair few goals.
- 57:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think he'll be the top scorer of the tournament.
- 58:01SPEAKER_06: He's he's got hot, Tibbi's got hot fair play to him.
- 58:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 58:05SPEAKER_02: I'm going for Tibbi.
- 58:07SPEAKER_02: He'll score in four games.
- 58:09SPEAKER_02: Um not against us, but he'll score in four games and he'll score uh six.

- 58:16SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 58:18SPEAKER_02: Your predictions?
- 58:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, the women's side I'm not gonna not gonna mess mess about and say Netherlands are on top, but I think they beat I think they beat Germany in the final um and then I think Spain get bronze, I think, uh being in uh being England.
- 58:39SPEAKER_06: Don't know if that works.
- 58:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah, let's go with that.
- 58:42SPEAKER_06: Um top goal scorer.
- 58:43SPEAKER_06: I can I mean I'll just say someone else for the for for the sake of it.
- 58:48SPEAKER_06: Um yeah, Matler randomly gets loads of goals, but I don't think that's also I mean she's clear now.
- 58:56SPEAKER_02: Uh Matler, Frederica Matler, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:03SPEAKER_02: Um pretty pretty well known name internationally, yeah.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 59:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

- 59:13SPEAKER_06: Um and then it's an it's an it's it's a repeat of last year.
- 59:22SPEAKER_06: It's an England-Netherlands final of the two years ago, and uh, but it's a Germany-Spain bronze medal match.
- 59:31SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah, um with Sam Hooper being top goalscorer.
- 59:38SPEAKER_06: So it's a hunchy odds.
