- 0:00Hey everyone, welcome back. I got a special guest today.
- 0:02What up? It's a lazy big and lazy easy.
- 0:05That's my Christian name. Hi.
- 0:08She's here and we are going to talk books.
- 0:10I've got a game for you. OK, Right.
- 0:12You know, I'm into like quizzes and stuff, yes.
- 0:14You've still not been to one of my quiz nights, but I host the
- 0:16best quiz nights and they're really fun.
- 0:17Because I'm not reading that into quizzes, but you know.
- 0:20Why are we friends? We like my quizzes.
- 0:23There are prizes. What kind of prizes?
- 0:25I gave Mr Potato Head out of the last one.
- 0:27Oh, can it be chocolate? I'll come if it's chocolate.
- 0:30It's never chocolate. Oh, skin care.
- 0:32No Botox I gave a kid's art kid. Like close to painting?
- 0:39How about I just participate and get a participation trophy?
- 0:41Oh, I have medals for the winter.
- 0:43Oh, I would love a bit. OK.
- 0:44I'd love a medal. OK, OK, OK.
- 0:46OK, so one of the rounds I sometimes do in my quizzes is
- 0:50where I put up a one star review of like a piece of classic
- 0:53literature and I try and get people to guess what it is.
- 0:56I've got some of that for you. Some of them are a little bit
- 0:58hard. So I've got a series of one star
- 0:59reviews for you. Some good books, some bad.
- 1:02I'm pretty sure you know them all, except maybe one of them.
- 1:04OK, perfect. It's a bit like the red letter
- 1:08box. Letter box movie review.
- 1:11Probably. Yes.
- 1:12OK, perfect. No, let's go for it.
- 1:13Go for it. Make sure I can't see the
- 1:14screen. Though no looking.
- 1:15OK so the first one they start a bit vague and then as I go
- 1:19through them like you'll get more and more clues.
- 1:20So the first one, This book was the epitome of suffering from
- 1:24boredom. I know it's only January, but
- 1:26this will be my least favourite book of the year as well as the
- 1:28longest. Longest and boring and you think
- 1:32I've read it? I'm pretty sure you have.
- 1:33Is it like 20 questions where I get to ask like some?
- 1:37I'm gonna say like have a guess and then I can read you more one
- 1:40star reviews of it. Do I get to know the genre?
- 1:43Do I get to guess the genre? Yeah, if you want.
- 1:46Is it some sort of like young adult fantasy?
- 1:48No, I really don't understand. I just don't get it.
- 1:53This is one of the great novels and baffled.
- 1:56Was it because I listened to the audio book instead of reading
- 1:59it? Or maybe it was a translation of
- 2:00the version I had. This book is extremely long,
- 2:03extremely slow, and just when it would start to pick up, the
- 2:06author would go off on tangents of crops and farming, religion,
- 2:10politics, or something completely uninteresting and
- 2:12unimportant to the overall story.
- 2:17Crops and crops. And I know, I know, I know.
- 2:20Is it Anna Kronan? Because he does.
- 2:24He just goes on about crossing and like, oh, I was with the
- 2:26peasants and the peasants. The peasants have a better life
- 2:28than me, but I'm rich and it's like Tolstoy, please.
- 2:32Do you know what I did kind of think like, oh, it's so long.
- 2:34I did think Russian, but then I wasn't shocked.
- 2:37I'm good see you are good at this.
- 2:39I love Anacrenda Anaconda. She's so fucking relatable.
- 2:42Like she spins out at the end and just calls children ugly.
- 2:45I'm like that's so me. And then spoiler letter throws
- 2:48herself under a train. I'm like, Oh my God, so me.
- 2:52I think you'll like some of the other reviews.
- 2:54Infuriatingly boring. The last 25 pages are a
- 2:57philosophical essay cloned in fiction.
- 3:00What's wrong with that? That's what's so good about it.
- 3:03I love a meandering story that goes nowhere, really.
- 3:05I can't think of any reason Tulsa I would have stuck this at
- 3:08the end of an 800 plus page novel unless A he was worried
- 3:12that the previous 776 pages didn't convey his purpose or B
- 3:16he realised his ideas were too half bombed to warrant a
- 3:19straightforward essay. They're just not really a
- 3:22swearer. They're just moaning.
- 3:23They're just moaning for the sake of it.
- 3:24It's a great book. This person said it was a slog
- 3:29and said I hated Anna. I hated her ineffectual husband,
- 3:32Alexey Alexandrovich. Yeah.
- 3:34Is that pronounced? Yeah.
- 3:35I hated Camp Vronsky. I hated Princess Kitty.
- 3:38I hated Kitty's entire superficial family.
- 3:41I hated the Asitic. Is that how you say it?
- 3:4411 or ascetic? And really, if you read Anna
- 3:48Karenina, the Russian Revolution makes total sense.
- 3:51Early in the novel, a railway worker falls into the path of a
- 3:53moving train and is killed. A horrible human tragedy in
- 3:56which one moved to compassion? Nah.
- 3:58To Anna, it's merely a sign of the upcoming bad luck for
- 4:01members of her privileged set. Well yes, she's fairly self
- 4:04absorbed but but it did the thing of her her brother.
- 4:10Her brother has an affair in the beginning and he remains his
- 4:14social status even though he had an affair with like it was like
- 4:16it was like the maiden who like lived in the the nanny or
- 4:19something. Whereas Anna has an affair and
- 4:21loses everything. And Tolstoy, he wouldn't
- 4:23describe himself as a feminist, I don't think.
- 4:24But it very much is a bit of a feminist novel.
- 4:26Well, we were discussing that over on the video we did for
- 4:29your channel, didn't we? About, like how women are
- 4:31punished so much more harshly. Yeah.
- 4:33For less crying, essentially. Yeah.
- 4:35You know a woman doesn't smile, but a man can rape someone.
- 4:37Yeah, and Anna Creditor is basically that is a great book.
- 4:41Yeah. I I don't think think much of
- 4:42Princess Kitty Eva. She's a bit like, Oh my God,
- 4:44you're like, you're like 10 and you want to have baby like grow
- 4:46up. But it's a different type.
- 4:49Like there's a bit where she what's his name?
- 4:51Levin Levin the the, the, the the landlord.
- 4:54He wrote a letter to her to say that he had not remained pure
- 4:58and he had like he'd basically he wasn't a virgin And she like
- 5:01reason is like sick and crying a frog.
- 5:03Oh, I like this so so me that's. Very EastEnders.
- 5:06You know I love my EastEnders. So dramatic.
- 5:09OK, one for one. What's the next one?
- 5:11Right, this one you've definitely read.
- 5:13People liking this book should be studied.
- 5:15Is it a Colleen Hoover book? No, too vague.
- 5:19There's only one word I could use to describe this book.
- 5:21Disgusting. Is it like a sexy book?
- 5:26Some might think so. 50 Shades. No, every character in this book
- 5:30needs therapy, and now I do as well.
- 5:33Credence, Credence. I'm so I'm so good at this.
- 5:37I lick my big brain. I.
- 5:39I thought you were going to get it on like a couple of the
- 5:42others. So has anyone checked on
- 5:43straight people recently? Fair.
- 5:46If a genie gave me 3 wishes, I'd use all three of them to make
- 5:48sure Penelope Douglas never writes another book again.
- 5:51This was truly and utterly horrible.
- 5:53It's like looking at a train wreck.
- 5:54You want to look away, but you can't.
- 5:56And honestly, the worst part of this book isn't even the small
- 5:58incest. No, the worst part is how it's
- 6:00written. Genuinely, genuinely, genuinely
- 6:04the worst part of the work. I mean, by the end of Credence I
- 6:06basically because you know, she sleeps with the step uncle and
- 6:09then she has a threesome with her step cousins.
- 6:11Which do you know? I didn't know.
- 6:13That. Are you going to review it?
- 6:16Well, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. She has like a threesome with
- 6:17her step cousins. One of them has like a really
- 6:20big And so he does it in the ego.
- 6:26I thought you were saying the Russian name then.
- 6:27Like like like no, there's no ego ego Regosian in this book.
- 6:32He like so when she's hand the freesome, he puts it in her
- 6:35butt. No Lube, massive and no Lube,
- 6:37and she's never done it before and it's like behave, but like
- 6:40by the end of it, you know, because she suits the step uncle
- 6:42first. I wanted them to get together.
- 6:44If she had to be with someone in this weird mountain top like
- 6:47place, the the step uncle who's twice her age was genuinely a
- 6:51better option than the the the rapist of the woods who she ends
- 6:56up with. Oh, it's so bad, the rapist of
- 6:57the wood. Yeah, he's like this.
- 6:59He lives in the woods and he's always like covered in dear
- 7:00blood. He comes in the first time he
- 7:02sees the the girl. He tries to, he does.
- 7:04He does try to rape her. And then they make fun of at the
- 7:07end of the books they get together and he's like, oh,
- 7:09remember when? And he's like mute.
- 7:10He's mute for most of it. They love realise.
- 7:12No, it's so stupid. She should have ended up with
- 7:15the step uncle. I have I reviewed any Penelope
- 7:19Douglas. I don't think you have, because
- 7:21I think you would be astonished, because Colleen's better.
- 7:25Who did? There was another rapey one that
- 7:28I reviewed. Oh.
- 7:29The one of millions? Well, yeah, that's all that the
- 7:33market wants these days. No I can't.
- 7:36I feel like it was her. It was like about these like 4
- 7:40basketball players or something and I don't know.
- 7:43Did they like run a train on someone?
- 7:45Well, at one point, yeah, kind of.
- 7:49OK. This one.
- 7:50This is interesting. This might be the worst book
- 7:52I've ever tried to read. I literally might use it as
- 7:54kindling this summer. Too big.
- 7:57Could be anything. OK, author does drugs, has sex
- 8:00and Hertz or rips off every person he encounters along the
- 8:02way. Repeat for over 300 pages.
- 8:05The persona is so obviously affected.
- 8:06From the mock estuary style language which mainly consists
- 8:10of using the word where oh sorry were as often and non
- 8:13grammatically as possible to the name dropping of books read in
- 8:16high school. Baudelaire, Chomsky, Guevara.
- 8:20Is that how you pronounce it? And an artist like Kandinsky and
- 8:23Henry Moore? The constant name dropping of
- 8:25Walliams and Fielding perhaps doesn't bode well for the trio
- 8:29given the rapidly closing rapidly closing net of Yew Tree
- 8:322 point O. That should give me some big
- 8:34hints in there. Yew Tree and wallet.
- 8:37Williams and Fielding as in David Walliams and Noel
- 8:39Fielding. Russell Brand, Becky Wirks.
- 8:45I had to put this on in. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:47There's oh, I, I there's stuff about like while you see it
- 8:51everywhere, but like nothing's nothing's ever kind of like.
- 8:53Yeah, but his, his publishers dropped him now.
- 8:56Yeah. So I think there was something
- 8:57behind the scenes, like where they knew something and there's
- 9:00life. Ever.
- 9:01Well. I think it was you who told me
- 9:06or something that. Do you remember when Catherine
- 9:07Ryan said ages ago there's someone, like, who everyone
- 9:10knows behind the scenes? He's a predator of a rapist?
- 9:12Yeah. And he's still like really
- 9:13wildly popular and successful and like.
- 9:15And it's about brand, yeah. Oh, no, you, you told me that
- 9:18you thought it was David Williams.
- 9:20Oh, no. If it was Catherine Ryan, she's
- 9:22been making allusions to Russell Brand for like, ages.
- 9:24But the David Walliams thing, it's just one of these things of
- 9:27like when I, when I was researching into like more about
- 9:29Russell Brand. Williams is a name that does
- 9:31crop up a lot, but I don't think there's anything like out about
- 9:33him. So it's just we're just going to
- 9:35wait and see. Yeah, hurrah.
- 9:39OK, we've got another one. This one I'm.
- 9:45Yeah, you have read it. I'm sure you have, because
- 9:46you've told me about it. I do say a lot though.
- 9:50This book is about observations. A lot of really boring
- 9:54observations. A lot.
- 9:56Of really boring observations, but a whole book of it.
- 10:00We're just talking about other people apparently.
- 10:02Talking about other people for a whole book.
- 10:03I wouldn't say that that's what this.
- 10:05But you've read it, yeah. Give.
- 10:07Me another one. OK, arduous read.
- 10:10Nebulous, implausible premise, unlikable characters, inferior
- 10:14execution. The lack of quotation Marks and
- 10:17other punctuation is jarring and only sews confusion.
- 10:20Dialogue interspersed in text is lethargic.
- 10:23The narrative is already sluggish.
- 10:25The failure to delineate what's what's happening now and what is
- 10:29a flashback is a hallmark of the impotence that epitomises this.
- 10:33Book Requiem for a Dream. No.
- 10:36Because there's no punctuation in that one.
- 10:38But there what? There's no punctuation in this
- 10:39one. It's a long time since I read it
- 10:42but I don't remember that. But apparently not.
- 10:44I mean there is punctuation but I think it's just speech isn't
- 10:47in speech marks. I think it's a long time since I
- 10:51read it. I studied it in school if that's
- 10:54a hint. Oh, is it like an older one?
- 10:56Not. That old.
- 10:59If you're studying at school, give me another one.
- 11:01OK, did not live up to the hype. It's no wonder I never really
- 11:04heard about this book until the TV series came out.
- 11:08Actress in that is terrific. This book.
- 11:11Slow, convoluted writing and not credible plot.
- 11:14It seems to be a book written over 30 years ago which suddenly
- 11:17became relevant in the age of We All Hate Men, You.
- 11:20Said TV series. I immediately thought of like
- 11:22heated rivalry. It's not going to be that if you
- 11:24study, if you studied it at school.
- 11:25Yeah, studied heated rivalry in school.
- 11:28I think I have to say leave school if that was part of the
- 11:31curriculum. What?
- 11:32No punctuation? We hate men.
- 11:34Observations about people don't. Focus too much on the
- 11:37punctuation thing, because that's not a huge part of
- 11:40anything. Observations about people and
- 11:43learning at school. Learning it at school.
- 11:47I'm in school in ages. I did it at sixth form if that
- 11:49helps. Give me enough one, give me
- 11:51enough one. This one's hard.
- 11:52Read this book, they told me you'll love it since you like
- 11:54dystopian so much. Author is such an amazing
- 11:57author. They told me you'll love her.
- 11:59All of you said that to me. You lied through your damn
- 12:02teeth. Did your nose grow as any of you
- 12:04were saying this to me? This is the worst dystopian
- 12:07novel I have ever read. It's boring, dry and over
- 12:10descriptive. I knew I was in trouble when I
- 12:12read the first 30 pages and had no idea what I read because I
- 12:15think I lost consciousness so I had to reread the first 30 pages
- 12:18all over again. I found myself doing that quite
- 12:21often throughout the book. I really don't understand the
- 12:23fascination that some people have with this book.
- 12:25There are so many other dystopian novels out there that
- 12:27are so much better. My apologies to all her fans,
- 12:31but I would really rather watch paint dry than be subjected to
- 12:34another one of her novels. Handmaid's Tale.
- 12:36Yes. Because it's so boring.
- 12:40I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
- 12:41And you know it like I. Liked it?
- 12:44For me, for me, I mean, I because I understand why it has
- 12:47to be boring because she's just stuck in the house.
- 12:48But I'm like and the and the TV show as well.
- 12:51The TV show. I mean the first season all
- 12:52right, but afterwards diabolical.
- 12:55No Handmaid's tale because I found it incredibly boring as
- 12:57well. But it's weird though, because
- 12:59it's predicted America quite well.
- 13:00Oh. My God, tell me about it.
- 13:01So. You'll then like this next
- 13:04review for it. Let's pretend that an extreme
- 13:06radical feminist sat down to write a book about what the
- 13:08world would look like if if the other side took over the US.
- 13:12Then let's say she doesn't know as much about Christianity as
- 13:15she thinks, so she grabs a couple of Sam Harris and
- 13:17Christopher Hitchens books to catch up on the topic.
- 13:19The result is The Handmaid's Tale.
- 13:21If I was to make a short list of the most overrated books I've
- 13:24ever read, this would easily be in the top ten.
- 13:26Strike that top five. In fact, off the top of my head,
- 13:29I can only think of one book I would consider even more
- 13:32overrated. I, yeah, I couldn't get through
- 13:34it, but I also, I also couldn't get through Wuthering Heights
- 13:36and I've tried both the book and the audio book and I'm just
- 13:39like, I just don't care, dude, I'm sorry.
- 13:41I. Like the writing in Wuthering
- 13:42Heights, but I'm not personally a fan of the story.
- 13:44I know it's meant to be about like this toxic relationship and
- 13:46showing all that, but it's it's just not for me which I.
- 13:48Don't mind, I like I like a toxic relationship with this
- 13:51done well, it doesn't do it for me.
- 13:55OK, this one I am also pretty sure you should have definitely
- 13:59read it and the first review is just well named.
- 14:03Well named. Oh that's so annoying. 50 Shades
- 14:07of Grey. That's going to be my default
- 14:08and. Save yourself the boredom and
- 14:12just watch the movie. Twilight no OK made me go into a
- 14:18book slump. There were only two characters
- 14:20and 70% of the book was the main character talking about how fat
- 14:23the other one was. This book sounds great.
- 14:30How fat the other one was. I like this book as well.
- 14:32So you like this book? It's well named and it's just
- 14:35someone roasting someone for their weight.
- 14:38It's actually like someone roasting someone for their
- 14:40weight. It happens at intervals.
- 14:41Like fat shaming them. 22 characters?
- 14:44Really only two characters? Ah yes, how nice it is to read
- 14:49disgusting descriptions of the woman's body, misogynistic
- 14:52undertones, and pages on top of pages of his first person
- 14:55perspective and still to find a character that's uninteresting
- 14:59AF. American Psycho.
- 15:01And not as developed as it should have been, no.
- 15:04You're. You're getting closer though.
- 15:07I like American Psycho anyway. Yeah, it's good.
- 15:11I just read Victorian Psycho, which I thought was going to
- 15:14have like kind of similarly vibes.
- 15:15It kind of did, but I was also a little underwhelmed.
- 15:18But it's. OK so a boring main character
- 15:21and he just keeps talking because American Psycho he would
- 15:23be talking about how fat people are talk about how fat someone
- 15:26is. Somehow fat someone is talk
- 15:29about how fat someone is. This is not ringing any verse
- 15:31this is this is going to annoy me.
- 15:34I hated everything about this book.
- 15:35I hated the characters, I hated the plot, I hated the emphasis
- 15:38on putting the protagonist through graphic torture and
- 15:40mutilation, and I hated that there wasn't really any point to
- 15:43it all. The recent trend in torture porn
- 15:46in horror films almost certainly took their cues, at least in
- 15:49part, from this book. At least the title is the most
- 15:52accurate description I've seen of this book.
- 15:57Torch. This literally just sounds like
- 15:59American Psycho. This is stumping me.
- 16:02Wait, give me a clue. Give me a clue.
- 16:04Give me a little hint. You're not the only one stumped.
- 16:09Stumped. Stumped.
- 16:11Kind of. Stumped.
- 16:14Is that the the book title? Stumped.
- 16:17But someone does have stumps in it.
- 16:20Someone has. Essentially.
- 16:24Tommy got his gun. No.
- 16:26OK, OK, I've. Got another one and.
- 16:28Someone has stumps in it. Kind of there's.
- 16:30Two people, There's two people. Someone's talking about being
- 16:33fat and like they've got stumps. What the hell?
- 16:36What kind of book is this? This sounds great.
- 16:38I'm going to buy it. If I've never read it, I'm going
- 16:40to buy it, I think. You do know it, and you'll get
- 16:42what I mean by that. You will.
- 16:44You will. Stump.
- 16:49I liked the concept, but man did the author butcher it.
- 16:51No wonder he had to write this in his coke Bender phase.
- 16:54Ain't no other way someone could continue to write this.
- 16:57Coke Bender phase. So it's a Stephen Kingberg.
- 16:59Yes, it's a Stephen Kingberg. Oh shit.
- 17:01Someone's talking about, someone's told, someone's,
- 17:03someone's got stumps. No, no, no.
- 17:09Leg cut off like misery. Mystery is a good book.
- 17:17What are they talking about is great.
- 17:19Mystery is a great book. It's so like dread.
- 17:23It's so fucking good. These people are cooked.
- 17:25These people are cooked what they're talking about.
- 17:26It was my first. Stephen King book I read and I
- 17:30loved it. It's really, genuinely really
- 17:32good. The one he wrote in like a
- 17:34proper coke filled Bender was Cujo.
- 17:36He doesn't remember Cujo is this big.
- 17:37He doesn't remember writing it at all.
- 17:39Pet cemetery as well, wasn't it? I think that symmetry might have
- 17:41been early on in his career. He was on a lot of drugs for the
- 17:44ages. OK, this one is simply just no.
- 17:4950 Shades of grey. Yeah, no.
- 17:53Incredibly predictable, highly overrated, and full of
- 17:56characters and ridiculous moments I disliked.
- 17:59It doesn't narrow it down. That's so subjective.
- 18:03This next one's so big. What I didn't like every single
- 18:06word, paragraph, character, and brain cell.
- 18:08This book wasted. What?
- 18:10I liked the ending because it meant I was finally free from
- 18:13the stumps to fire in disguise. Twilight.
- 18:18No. It doesn't narrow it down.
- 18:21This isn't a romance, but half of book talk are not ready for
- 18:24that conversation. So if it's book talk popular and
- 18:28it's just awful, is it a coho that doesn't narrow it down?
- 18:33She's got like 30 books. She's like they're all terrible.
- 18:36It's not it ends of us. Yes, is it?
- 18:38Yeah, because everyone in change book at this point you could.
- 18:40Just say. Apart from Woman down, Woman
- 18:43Down's great. Oh.
- 18:44I hated. It, I love it.
- 18:45It's so funny, so funny. I love saying.
- 18:48I love how she tried to be self aware and it's just like it
- 18:51feels so miserably. It's so stupid that's.
- 18:52What makes it fun? And it's just like her, the
- 18:55whole the introduction to the book is just her ranting at
- 18:57people who criticised her like it.
- 19:00I she should have just added me next time.
- 19:01I think it's great. I mean, we, she.
- 19:03Definitely watches videos about her I.
- 19:05Think I think she got a bit a bit better with this one though.
- 19:07I think the the. Writing is.
- 19:08Better cyber bullying is working.
- 19:10Yeah, I did. You're welcome, Koho.
- 19:12I did give it two stars. That's that's an improvement
- 19:15from one. I was like, you know what, this
- 19:17it made me laugh so much. I told my boyfriend about like
- 19:20the plot of it and he'd been drinking.
- 19:22So he was just he was he was into it.
- 19:23He was like, no, and like, you know, the bit where she's having
- 19:25sex with her husband then Saints that I was like, dude, when I
- 19:28read that bit, I laughed so hard and my boyfriend was like, this
- 19:31book sounds amazing. What?
- 19:32Happened to the husband in the end, I can't remember.
- 19:35Oh, they stayed. They stayed together.
- 19:37Yeah, they stayed together. Of course she did.
- 19:38She should have ran away and been with St like that man was
- 19:40crazy. He did it all so she would just
- 19:41write a new book. It's.
- 19:43A lot, isn't it, if one of your fans did that.
- 19:45Yeah, be all right with it. OK, so this is the last one that
- 19:49I've got. Your phone lights on.
- 19:50Oh. Thank you.
- 19:52So this is the last one we've got.
- 19:53I'm just going to put you in the spotlight for it.
- 19:54OK. This one, I don't actually know
- 19:56if you've read. This is the only one here that I
- 19:57don't know if you have or not. If this is one of my reviews, as
- 20:01in a bad review of my book, bad real book, yeah, it's Morgan.
- 20:05If you can love her. I don't know if you've read, but
- 20:08yeah. So I will say this, 75% of the
- 20:12negative reviews on here were from white men, the rest were
- 20:15from white women. OK, so men didn't like it.
- 20:18White men gone Girl No. Oh, the people who did dislike
- 20:24it as well. I went to look at some of their
- 20:25profiles and they all had like good read shells with names like
- 20:28Christian fiction and Amish fiction and stuff like that.
- 20:32So I think the people who dislike this book.
- 20:35Are religious. Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 20:37OK, OK. And very white.
- 20:40OK. This is the kind of book you'd
- 20:42have hard time expressing your dislike of in fear of people
- 20:45calling you racist. Infer of people calling you
- 20:47racist. Infer of people when you're
- 20:49racist. So, so obviously deals with
- 20:53race. Yeah, I don't know.
- 20:55To Kill a Mockingbird. No, actually, dear God, sorry.
- 20:59I can't. I get that it's a classic.
- 21:01I get that it's important. I even liked the plot, but I
- 21:07hated every second I spent reading it.
- 21:09Really, really not for me. I'm going to hell now.
- 21:12Bye. So it's a classic.
- 21:15So it's a classic and. I also studied this in school.
- 21:18It's a classic that deals with race and racism.
- 21:20I'm going to say, oh God, no. I'm showing my whiteness because
- 21:24I'm like, is this not like 100 years ago books were very
- 21:27tactful? Is it like over 100 years old?
- 21:30It says more recent a more recent classic that deals with
- 21:34race. Set in America, granted.
- 21:37Yeah yeah yeah. One of the trashiest books I've
- 21:41ever read. A crude, grotesque, reactionary
- 21:44period piece novel set 50 years in the past in a black sorry in
- 21:48a black water in a backwater town beset with constant
- 21:50violence and suffering. It's grotesque because every
- 21:53chapter brings some new atrocity, incest, rape,
- 21:56adultery, beating. It's crude because of its
- 21:59language and the shamelessness of most of its characters.
- 22:02It's reactionary because it's extremely biassed.
- 22:05It's not just a cathartic kind of novel, but also a very one
- 22:08sided one as well. Men are mostly portrayed as
- 22:11monsters or buffoons and women as sympathetic victims.
- 22:15I'm pretty sure 90% of the book's fanbase is female.
- 22:18We can forgive the author for her style of writing.
- 22:21The language is crass but different and suits the
- 22:24narrative. The problem is everything else
- 22:25is just a mess. Yeah, Before you said that, I
- 22:28was going to think what about hoes because that it's basically
- 22:32a classic now and. Incest in hoes.
- 22:35OK, so it's not hoes hoes. What a funny name for a book.
- 22:40Incest incest Backwater S South America.
- 22:46It's like a South America. I don't know The Adventures of
- 22:49Huckleberry Finn. No, but you're.
- 22:53South backwater, racism, incest, men being buffoons.
- 22:58That's any book to be honest. Men are buffoons.
- 23:00Just write what you know. But the you know, the fan base
- 23:03they're saying is mainly women sympathetic to women.
- 23:07Is there like a film based on this book or?
- 23:10Yeah, doesn't know. I think there's a musical as
- 23:12well. A musical.
- 23:14A musical. Not Chicago, Not Chicago.
- 23:18A musical, maybe. And a film.
- 23:21Oh, I'm stunned. Like the bloke in misery he got,
- 23:26he got hobbled technically. I felt so bad using that as a
- 23:29clue, but when you said it, it's not like a thing.
- 23:31But I was thinking of like, you know, pirates where they have
- 23:34like, peg legs. I was thinking that.
- 23:35I was thinking, it's OK, so there's pirates, but there's
- 23:37only two of them. Are they shipwrecked?
- 23:39They're magically through with pirates.
- 23:44You. Could do it, you could do it.
- 23:46It's sort of like a snowy Snowden place.
- 23:48It's like beach wrecked. Stephen King would write that.
- 23:53We can't give him ideas. He'll write anything.
- 23:55He'll be like, oh, look at this spooky microphone.
- 23:59OK, good. All right.
- 24:00I'm failing on this one. I'm enjoying a blank.
- 24:02It kept me completely enthralled until about halfway through.
- 24:05It introduced detailed erotic descriptions of sexual relations
- 24:09between women. This is about gay women
- 24:14killjoys. These people are so boring.
- 24:19Oh, is it like, is it like Little Women?
- 24:22No, I've never read that other women gay.
- 24:25They're not, no. Well, one of them people say
- 24:28she's kind of queer coded. Sure.
- 24:30No, I'm not a fan of Little Women.
- 24:32I've never. That's sacrilegious to say, like
- 24:35in the book community. But as classics go, I hate it.
- 24:38That's fair enough. I mean, it's on site with me
- 24:40and. Yeah, someone previously said
- 24:44this book should have been titled The colour Blue.
- 24:48The author is trying too hard. Honestly, she should have been
- 24:51taking care of her daughter instead of writing this
- 24:54missandrist book. Shouldn't be taking care of her
- 24:56daughter. So that's getting personal.
- 24:58So there's an issue with her daughter and it's recent enough.
- 25:02Like pro 50 years, past 50 years has a daughter, missandrist.
- 25:08Missandrist. Summary And men and white people
- 25:12are evil. Only lesbianism and
- 25:14primitiveness can save African American women.
- 25:17I wouldn't even consider this a book with the disgusting
- 25:20language, wild fantasies and illiterate writing.
- 25:22I've no idea. The one star reviews are pretty
- 25:25racist. Yeah, yeah, they're pretty
- 25:27crazy. This book is on the banned list
- 25:30of books and in my humble opinion it should stay there.
- 25:33I made the mistake of not reading why it's banned, I just
- 25:36knew I'd heard of it before and it sounded interesting.
- 25:39Whoops. This book is definitely rated R
- 25:41and holds a lot of morally wrong actions.
- 25:44It opens with the fairly graphic telling of a child rape, which
- 25:47should have been enough to tell me to put it down.
- 25:49It's not justified at all. It's like tragic back story and
- 25:53relevant. The rest of the book includes
- 25:55multiple partners, lesbian activity, and so much more.
- 26:00Not to mention the fact that all but one of the men in the book
- 26:04are portrayed as wife beaters and rapists.
- 26:07And then there's the part where they come to the conclusion that
- 26:10God is not a he or a she or an anything we can imagine, but is
- 26:14nature and the universe and the inner part of us.
- 26:17So yeah, I can completely understand why schools have
- 26:19banned this book. I have no idea.
- 26:21This book sounds like a rules though.
- 26:23It's great. It's The Color Purple by Alice.
- 26:24Walker No. Never read it.
- 26:26Never read it. I would have known.
- 26:27Sorry, that's the one that I didn't think you might have
- 26:29read. And you get the others.
- 26:32So what? Happens in it.
- 26:34So basically it's following this woman from her childhood into
- 26:37adulthood, and she is raped from a young age and she's
- 26:42impregnated by her father and she has the babies and then he
- 26:45takes them away and essentially, like, sells them to someone.
- 26:48What the hell? Yeah, it's horrible.
- 26:49And then he basically, as she gets older and she's 20, he's
- 26:53like essentially selling her off to another man's.
- 26:55You're too old for me now, babe. Kind of, yeah, That's crazy.
- 26:58And he marries her off to this other man who's much, much older
- 27:01than her, and he's already got kids, and she has to take care
- 27:04of these kids. And meanwhile, he's off having
- 27:07an affair with another woman who's like, a singer.
- 27:10And through meeting this singer, this woman actually becomes
- 27:14friends with her. And they get really close.
- 27:15And she discovers that actually, like, you know, sex isn't just
- 27:19about rape and pain and a man getting what he wants.
- 27:23But she has a relationship with this woman, and it becomes
- 27:25sexual. And she finally kind of learns
- 27:26to understand herself. And.
- 27:28Yeah. And there's a lot of, like, what
- 27:31it's like to live in that kind of, I guess, like, area of
- 27:36America and the racism that people face and the judgments
- 27:38that are cast on people and stuff.
- 27:40And yeah, it's interesting. It's good.
- 27:42Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:43I studied in school. Like I say, I enjoyed it.
- 27:45I did like a whole paper when I was like, 16 on.
- 27:47And that's an American thing to say.
- 27:49Call it a paper rather than like an essay.
- 27:50Oh, my God. And.
- 27:51I was in sophomore year. Freshman, it just sounds wrong
- 27:56out of our mouths, doesn't. It paper.
- 27:58Paper. Yeah, I did paper.
- 28:00No, I did this essay on basically like portrayals of
- 28:03female sexuality throughout literature.
- 28:06And I chose to look at it from like a really intersexual lens.
- 28:09So looking at it from like, you know, the angles of like how
- 28:14women are demonised with their sexuality, also how it's
- 28:17celebrated, how often black women in particular are
- 28:20demonised for it. But for them it can be this
- 28:22cause of like beautiful celebration and self
- 28:24realisation. And I looked at it through like
- 28:27all these different ages. So I did like kind of pre
- 28:29feminism first wave, second wave to the wave.
- 28:32And yeah, it's really interesting.
- 28:33I enjoyed. It Yeah, there's a specific term
- 28:35for misogyny against black women.
- 28:36It's like misogyny. Misogynoir.
- 28:40Sounds interesting. Those people are cooked.
- 28:41Yeah, I know, right? Gaffing about God.
- 28:44So. Yeah, you did really well there.
- 28:46I've got two of them, except The Color Purple.
- 28:49Yeah. This brain, you can't fuck this
- 28:50brain. This brain's so good.
- 28:52I can't believe they did like Misery though, like growing up
- 28:54like him. And his coke era is probably
- 28:56like one of his better eras for writing as well.
- 28:58I am surprised that they picked up something that is marketed as
- 29:00like a horror and a thriller, and we're like, Oh my God, it's
- 29:02too gruesome. Why is it foreign?
- 29:04Yeah. Right.
- 29:05God, you. Know what you're reading.
- 29:08The film is fantastic though. The film's really good.
- 29:12Yeah, I think it's one of the few books where like film and
- 29:14book are pretty much on a path with each other.
- 29:17Yeah, because they do the thing, the film when when she's
- 29:19hobbling him with the sledgehammer, they don't cut
- 29:22away. They do just show it.
- 29:23There was something similar in the book adaptation, the film
- 29:27adaptation of Gerald's Game, because in Gerald's Game she
- 29:30like she's handcuffed to the bed and she degloves herself
- 29:32essentially. And I think I've not seen the
- 29:34film, but I think they do like show the whole thing.
- 29:35I would go, I can't deal with that.
- 29:37I can't deal with that, no. No, don't like that.
- 29:40That's fun. We should do it.
- 29:42Yeah, we should do it again. OK.
- 29:43Right now. Right now.
- 29:45Right now because I feel so smart and big brained.
- 29:47Good. You are smart and big brained.
- 29:49I like how I got, I like how I got Anagrenda from it.
- 29:51It's too long. It's too long if they're talking
- 29:55about farming Anagrenda. You got some of them really
- 29:59quick, which was good. I yeah, I enjoyed that.
- 30:01Well there's a self selection bias going on though because you
- 30:04were picking ones that she's going to know.
- 30:05This so smart I learned. I learned the phrase self
- 30:09selection bias like a week ago. People keep saying it's a new
- 30:13thing that people keep saying self selecting.
- 30:14I'm like OK what? TikTok has gotten popular.
- 30:16Why are people using the term? Yeah, when you hear something
- 30:19popping up, it's usually like a TikTok.
- 30:20That's doesn't it? 100% because I because I always
- 30:22then feel a bit like oh do I just not know things Am I
- 30:24stupid? And it's like no some TikTok has
- 30:26gotten popular and they've said that bloody term self selecting.
- 30:29But it's true though, it's. Ugly.
- 30:31It's useful, but I guess it's like, you know, when everyone
- 30:34was like calling everyone a narcissist and it was like that,
- 30:38yeah, that I think started on TikTok, didn't it?
- 30:40And it just got crazy. Yeah, it's like sometimes people
- 30:42aren't narcissists. Sometimes they're just assholes.
- 30:44We don't need to look that I'm a bit of narcissists.
- 30:46I I definitely have some like tropes, some like traits, sorry,
- 30:49not tropes. And there were little traits
- 30:51going on. Well, like sociopath as well.
- 30:53Do you remember when this is so off topic for whatever, we've
- 30:55got like a few more minutes. Do you remember when, like
- 30:58people were calling Logan four years ago a sociopath?
- 31:01And then he said in a video, I have sociopathic traits.
- 31:03I think everyone does. And everyone on the inset was
- 31:05like, Oh my God, no, like, like, how, how dare you?
- 31:08And I watched it and I was like, if you look at the traits for
- 31:10sociopath, all of most of us are going to have at least one.
- 31:13I might have a few. I'm having people jumping down
- 31:16his throat. They were acting as though he
- 31:18was like a, and there's a lot of issues.
- 31:19Logan Paul. I'm not defending him, but I am
- 31:20saying that people then acted as though he was like a diagnosed
- 31:23psychopath who's going to like kill someone.
- 31:25People were acting great. Do you remember it was that time
- 31:26period where people being very hysterical over things?
- 31:30Like it was the Shane Dawson documentary era.
- 31:32Everyone was a yeah, everything then.
- 31:35Yeah, it was overhyped. And then because it was younger
- 31:37audience as well, because you always have to, you always have
- 31:39to remember like, oh, who is on the other side of this comment?
- 31:42Are they perhaps 15? Because imagine what we'd been
- 31:45like if we had social media at the age of like 12.
- 31:47Don't. Yeah, that's so.
- 31:49Bad. I've been cancelled like a
- 31:50million times. I I keep getting like memories
- 31:54popping up on Facebook of like just like really weird cringy
- 31:57things and like being a teenager and I'm like, oh, should I just
- 32:00wipe it all? It's not even anything like bad
- 32:03or anything. It's just, no, it's just cringe.
- 32:05It's just cringe like I see I see like comment threads of like
- 32:07me and my best friend and we're so dumb and I attacked him 1 and
- 32:10I was like dude 12 years ago we were so dumb.
- 32:12We still act the same now maybe. It's less cringy now.
- 32:16Yeah it's OK. Like the the lower Gen have an
- 32:18issue of being seen as cringe, so they don't do anything.
- 32:22That's a generalisation. I know, I know.
- 32:23But like, reportedly, like people go to clubs and they
- 32:26don't because they because, well, they're in they're in this
- 32:28age where everything is caught on camera and can go viral on
- 32:31TikTok. So you don't even want to like,
- 32:33you know, be a little bit drunk, be a little bit messy at a club
- 32:35because your friends or like enemies might, which is kind of
- 32:38sad, though. It's too it's too
- 32:39self-conscious. I feel like I'm reaching a
- 32:42really good point in my life now, and I'm at an age where
- 32:44like I'm kind of embracing the cringe a little bit and I like
- 32:47that and I like just being silly.
- 32:48Just being silly. Being a silly young woman is so
- 32:50good. Like it's so freeing, I.
- 32:52Can dance sober now and like, you know, I'm not afraid to look
- 32:55silly and just like, go crazy. Dance sober too.
- 32:58I wouldn't even dodge drunk, but I do a little a little bit of
- 33:01like if I go to a gig, I don't stand there like looking angry
- 33:04anymore like enjoy it a little bit and like get a bit looser.
- 33:08Yeah, I'll. Have a good dance.
- 33:10Been dancing in so long? Yeah.
- 33:12Should go dancing. Yeah.
- 33:12OK. And check it.
- 33:13It's too hot. Did you?
- 33:14Have a train together. Yes, you have a train to get.
- 33:16A train to get so we should wrap this up.
- 33:18That's all for today's video. Oh.
- 33:20God, thank, thank you for being here on my channel.
- 33:22I appreciate this. It's very fun.
- 33:25It's so fun. And you were like, I don't like
- 33:26quizzes until you get them all right.
- 33:29Well, because if I get it wrong then I'm very competitive.
- 33:31So I'm very like I can't be seen lacking in any department.
- 33:35Okay, if you come to one of my quiz nights, I'll do like a
- 33:36whole round just on you and obviously none of my friends
- 33:40will know you. YouTube drama I'm there do like
- 33:46a Dramageddon YouTube themed quiz that would go viral on
- 33:48Tiktok. You know what?
- 33:49I think my friends would love that.
- 33:51We should do that. Yeah, that would.
- 33:52Be really. Oh my God, can we Yes.
- 33:53OK, let's. What are the words that Tarti
- 33:55said that James said at her birthday dinner?
- 33:58Like you did it at my birthday dinner.
- 34:00But what did James say? You know what?
- 34:02I don't know that. And he was talking about how
- 34:04like basically, oh, he found the way to hot and it was like
- 34:08really inappropriate. And they were like, oh, he might
- 34:10be straight. And he was being like, I've got
- 34:11enough money. I can sleep who I want.
- 34:14She was basically being like, doesn't matter if they're
- 34:15straight. Alleged.
- 34:16Oh, it's Tarty's video, Leave me alone.
- 34:18It was so tarty. It said yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:20It was basically like, oh, I can have sex with anyone I want
- 34:23because I'm rich. He's so scummy, he bothers me.
- 34:26His face, just in general. Bothers me I think.
- 34:31Everyone feels that way about him, Alex.
- 34:33I can't believe like I watched this stuff years ago.
- 34:36It's so weird looking. Back I never liked it anyway he
- 34:38had this one video about this egg that got the most amount of
- 34:40likes on Instagram. I remember that, yeah, yeah.
- 34:42But like his video, the 1st 5 minutes was him just repeating
- 34:45going there is an egg on Instagram, on Instagram there is
- 34:48an egg it got and it's just doing that and it's like it's no
- 34:51word for it. It's like an aphora, an aphora
- 34:52where it's just like repetitive. Like it was just that for the
- 34:55and I was like this has got 1,000,000 views.
- 34:57What's wrong with you people watching this?
- 34:59I kind of hate that whole commentary bro collective.
- 35:05They don't, they don't have it somewhere.
- 35:07There's no like English commentary, bro.
- 35:08But I know what you mean. I know who you're talking about.
- 35:10From that era, that whole yeah, not fun, except I know, but he's
- 35:14lovely. Well, they'll bullied him, yeah.
- 35:16So sweetheart, but look at him now, he's like the only non
- 35:19problematic 1. We'll bully them.
- 35:21We'll bully them. Yeah, we'll protective over
- 35:23Frasier. I don't even know him but I feel
- 35:25like his big. Sister, I've literally I've
- 35:26never, I've never met him like I've spoken to him.
- 35:29I feel very protective over him too when he.
- 35:32Follows me on Instagram. I'm like, now I feel like I have
- 35:35to like, like, I do feel like we're his Big Sisters and we
- 35:37need to just stand up for it. He's so much bigger than us.
- 35:39Like channel. One, he's like 7 foot tall.
- 35:41He's like, he's like Gary. What's the what's the guy from
- 35:44take that? Gary Barlow.
- 35:45He's like Gary Barlow's son. Gary Barlow's son is massive.
- 35:49He's just like. I I liked that other one from
- 35:53Take That, the one who had the longer hair.
- 35:55Wouldn't know. I like Robbie Williams because
- 35:58he looks, he tries to hunt for aliens.

- 36:05Oh my God, did you see that musical they made that was like
- 36:08a take that jukebox musical and it was fantastic.

- 36:17they're really into the band back in the day, and then they
- 36:19grow up and they're like going to a reunion concert.
- 36:22And it's like, it's not Take That in the film, but it's like
- 36:24implied. It's like Take That.
