- 1:38Speaker 1: I can't help you. This portion of the program is
- 1:42Speaker 1: brought to you by the Dollar Floor Store. We're going
- 1:45Speaker 1: to be joined here in just a minute by author
- 1:47Speaker 1: Michael Starr. I'm looking forward to that. I loved his book,
- 1:50Speaker 1: Bob Newhart, The Life and Laughter of an American Treasure.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Did not know that his famous album that started his
- 2:04Speaker 1: career is called The Button Down Mind was taped live
- 2:08Speaker 1: at the Tidelands Motel in Houston, Texas, down the street
- 2:14Speaker 1: from where the Astrodome eventually was. I remember the Tidelands
- 2:19Speaker 1: because I'm old. But we'll talk to him about that
- 2:24Speaker 1: and much more on the life of Bob Newhart coming up. Tomorrow,
- 2:28Speaker 1: Scott Glendon will join me. We will have topics, as always. Thursday,
- 2:35Speaker 1: we'll have our Clark Eisenhower outdoor show. Either tomorrow or Thursday,
- 2:42Speaker 1: we're going to hear from Kalen DeBoer. The Alabama coach,
- 2:47Speaker 1: things are, let's say, disturbed in the Tuscaloosa area in
- 2:55Speaker 1: the state of Alabama. I think they were DEFCON 1
- 3:05Speaker 1: after losing to Georgia and went from DEFCON 1 to
- 3:08Speaker 1: DEFCON 5 after losing to Tennessee. And especially the way
- 3:13Speaker 1: they lost. Man, they got dominated. But you know what?
- 3:16Speaker 1: Georgia lost too. That game, as we mentioned yesterday on
- 3:19Speaker 1: the Writer's Roundtable, it took a lot out of both teams.
- 3:25Speaker 1: A lot out of both teams. It is.
- 3:31Speaker 1: We'll see how Alabama rebounds against the Aggies this weekend. Saturday, 2.30.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Our coverage begins at 10.30 in the morning here on
- 3:41Speaker 1: The Zone. Jackie Sherrill has been named the Bear Bryant
- 3:46Speaker 1: Lifetime Achievement Award winner. And it will be given out
- 3:56Speaker 1: on January 27th in Houston. Bruce Arian's Heart of Champion Award.
- 4:08Speaker 1: There's a Newcomer of the Year. There's the National Coach
- 4:10Speaker 1: of the Year that evening. As I mentioned earlier, it
- 4:14Speaker 1: will be the 41st year, and it will be two
- 4:17Speaker 1: days after the national championship game in Las Vegas on
- 4:22Speaker 1: the 25th. Texax first reported that Jordan Pope's preliminary injunction
- 4:30Speaker 1: was granted by a California judge, which means it's a
- 4:36Speaker 1: little longer than a temporary restraining order, which he had.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And the NCAA could go back to court seeking to
- 4:49Speaker 1: overturn the injunction. As I understand it, which isn't a lot,
- 4:57Speaker 1: that could take enough time to allow Jordan Pope to
- 5:02Speaker 1: play for quite a while this year. I think they're
- 5:10Speaker 1: still waiting on Ryland Griffiths. There have been several others.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Trey Kaufman Wren at Alabama.
- 5:20Speaker 5: R.J.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Lewis ineligible at LSU. And the war of words between
- 5:28Speaker 1: the league and LSU is not over. The state's attorney
- 5:34Speaker 1: general went postal on the SEC this afternoon. Ending their
- 5:42Speaker 1: statement with enough is enough. Leave us alone. The World
- 5:47Speaker 1: Series is set. Ray's Brewers will begin Friday night in Milwaukee. Okay,
- 5:54Speaker 1: are we ready for this? All right. Right now we're
- 5:59Speaker 1: going to jump out to the Players Fund Center phone
- 6:02Speaker 1: line and visit with author Michael Starr. His latest book
- 6:07Speaker 1: is called Bob Newhart. The Life and Laughter of an
- 6:11Speaker 1: American Treasure. Michael, thanks so much. What kind of led
- 6:15Speaker 1: you to do this book on Newhart?
- 6:18Speaker 5: You know, Chip, I'm always looking for somebody who hasn't
- 6:22Speaker 5: really been written about yet. You know, usually pop culture
- 6:26Speaker 5: heroes and icons. And Bob only passed away two years ago,
- 6:31Speaker 5: and I had interviewed him before when I was at
- 6:33Speaker 5: the New York Post and for some of my other books.
- 6:36Speaker 5: And he was a nice guy, and I just, you know,
- 6:39Speaker 5: was thinking about my next project and looking back on
- 6:42Speaker 5: his career, which was, you know, very iconic. And I thought,
- 6:45Speaker 5: you know, why not? He deserves to have his story told.
- 6:49Speaker 5: He basically, you know, 60-odd years ago was an overnight success,
- 6:56Speaker 5: and he remained so popular for over 60 years that
- 7:01Speaker 5: I just thought his story deserved to be told. And
- 7:04Speaker 5: I hope I've... People will learn some things about Bob
- 7:08Speaker 5: that they didn't know before and when they read the book.
- 7:11Speaker 1: When you dig into the lives of these folks and
- 7:14Speaker 1: you've written about a lot of people, I don't want
- 7:17Speaker 1: to say there's disappointment, maybe surprise when you learn things.
- 7:21Speaker 1: You go, ah, that's a shame. It seems that Newhart,
- 7:26Speaker 1: what you see is what you get for the most part.
- 7:30Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's a good point, Chip. There are usually
- 7:34Speaker 5: when you do these sorts of books, you know, you
- 7:37Speaker 5: have an image, a vision in your head of what
- 7:40Speaker 5: the person is like, and then when you start to
- 7:42Speaker 5: do research and you go back in their history, sometimes
- 7:46Speaker 5: you find out some things that may surprise you and
- 7:49Speaker 5: make you scratch your head and go, oh, man, I
- 7:51Speaker 5: didn't know that. But that was not the case with
- 7:54Speaker 5: Bob Newhart. I mean, as you said, what you saw... on,
- 7:58Speaker 5: on screen. And I can tell you personally off, off screen,
- 8:02Speaker 5: he was a nice guy. And, and that was his,
- 8:05Speaker 5: his whole demeanor and his, his whole affect and his, his, the,
- 8:11Speaker 5: the public perception of him was, was sort of right
- 8:14Speaker 5: on point because he really was a nice guy, very unaffected. Um,
- 8:19Speaker 5: I don't think success went to his head as it
- 8:21Speaker 5: does with a lot of people. And, um, he was
- 8:24Speaker 5: a straight shooter and, um, you know, lived his life
- 8:30Speaker 5: in public as he lived it privately, you know, on
- 8:32Speaker 5: the straight and narrow. And, you know, I spoke to
- 8:36Speaker 5: a lot of people who knew him, and they really
- 8:39Speaker 5: had nothing negative to say in general.
- 8:42Speaker 1: He lived the life of an accountant.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, it's funny. But when you look at Bob,
- 8:51Speaker 5: when you look at his public persona, you can sort
- 8:54Speaker 5: of You can sort of see how he might have been.
- 8:57Speaker 5: He started out his working career, yes, as an accountant.
- 9:02Speaker 5: It didn't work out. He himself said he was not
- 9:04Speaker 5: very good with numbers and money, and he had to
- 9:08Speaker 5: sort of make up for shortfalls by taking money out
- 9:11Speaker 5: of his own pocket. But he was a very unassuming man,
- 9:16Speaker 5: and he went to law school also for a year,
- 9:19Speaker 5: but he didn't like that, so he dropped out. kind
- 9:22Speaker 5: of fell into this, you know, doing comedy routines. And, yeah,
- 9:27Speaker 5: it is surprising that he did start out as an accountant,
- 9:30Speaker 5: but as he would be the first to tell you,
- 9:32Speaker 5: he was not very good. So luckily for us, he
- 9:35Speaker 5: found a better vocation.
- 9:38Speaker 1: You know, I had no idea that the great album
- 9:44Speaker 1: that he did, the button-down mind of Bob Newhart, iconic,
- 9:49Speaker 1: was taped in– Houston at the old Tidelands. It actually
- 9:55Speaker 1: was a motel. It was one of those drive-ups. I
- 9:59Speaker 1: remember it. I mean, I'm old enough to remember the Tidelands.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Had no idea that that album was cut there.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Yeah, it's an interesting fact. I mean, when Bob was
- 10:13Speaker 5: signed by Warner Brothers Records, I mean, nobody knew who
- 10:16Speaker 5: he was. I mean, Warner Brothers was taking a risk
- 10:19Speaker 5: by signing Bob. They had heard some of his pre-taped
- 10:22Speaker 5: comedy bits, and they wanted to record a live album.
- 10:27Speaker 5: But since he wasn't really known, he was known in Chicago,
- 10:31Speaker 5: but really not outside of the city by too many people.
- 10:35Speaker 5: They needed to find a nightclub where he could do
- 10:39Speaker 5: his act. And keep in mind, he had never even
- 10:41Speaker 5: been in a nightclub. He had never done his act
- 10:43Speaker 5: in a nightclub before. So he sort of had two
- 10:46Speaker 5: strikes against him already. And it took the record company
- 10:51Speaker 5: quite a while to find a club willing to take
- 10:55Speaker 5: an unknown and let him perform there. And even the
- 11:01Speaker 5: clubs in his own city of Chicago said no, and
- 11:04Speaker 5: New York, no, L.A., no. But they finally found the
- 11:09Speaker 5: Tidelands in Houston, and they were willing to take a
- 11:12Speaker 5: gamble on him and put an unknown, let him perform
- 11:17Speaker 5: where he had never performed before in a nightclub. And
- 11:21Speaker 5: the rest is history. I mean, the album you mentioned,
- 11:25Speaker 5: The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, Put him on the
- 11:28Speaker 5: map and put Warner Brothers records on the map and
- 11:33Speaker 5: it sold over a million copies and he was on
- 11:35Speaker 5: his way from there. He never looked back.
- 11:37Speaker 1: You know, it's not hyperbole, I don't think, to say
- 11:41Speaker 1: it is one of the most successful and greatest comedy
- 11:45Speaker 1: albums in the history of the medium, isn't it?
- 11:49Speaker 5: Yes, and they weren't even... It's funny because when Bob
- 11:53Speaker 5: recorded that album, they weren't even called comedy albums back then.
- 11:56Speaker 5: They were called spoken word albums. The term hadn't really
- 12:01Speaker 5: been coined until Bob had this huge success with the
- 12:04Speaker 5: button-down mind of Bob Newhart and other record companies and
- 12:09Speaker 5: his own label started to record a lot of comedians.
- 12:11Speaker 5: So it kind of became known as comedy albums. And
- 12:18Speaker 5: Such was the success of that album that it really
- 12:25Speaker 5: helped save Warner Brothers Records. Obviously, the movie studio was
- 12:28Speaker 5: a huge success, and they had some success in television,
- 12:33Speaker 5: but they were struggling with their records. So they signed
- 12:39Speaker 5: the Everly Brothers, who had a number one hit with
- 12:43Speaker 5: Wake Up Little Susie. That helped. that was a big help.
- 12:47Speaker 5: And then along comes Bob with the button down mind.
- 12:50Speaker 5: And that those two acts, the Everly brothers and Bob
- 12:54Speaker 5: Newhart really in effect saved Warner brothers records.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And then he, from, from that, he parlays that into
- 13:02Speaker 1: TV appearances on all of the big talk shows. He
- 13:05Speaker 1: was the tonight show with, with both Jack Parr, I think,
- 13:10Speaker 1: and Johnny Carson, Dean Martin. I mean, Dinah Shore. He
- 13:15Speaker 1: went on all of these shows because in those days,
- 13:19Speaker 1: it wasn't instant. I'm guessing people are seeing Bob Newhart
- 13:23Speaker 1: for the first time. They saw his picture on the
- 13:26Speaker 1: album cover, but they'd never seen him until he goes
- 13:29Speaker 1: on television.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Exactly. That's a great point because you think back, obviously
- 13:36Speaker 5: no internet, No cell phones, you know, that kind of thing.
- 13:40Speaker 5: No TikTok. So, yeah, and people were getting their first
- 13:45Speaker 5: look physically at people who maybe not have seen him
- 13:48Speaker 5: in a nightclub at Bob Newhart. You know, millions of Americans,
- 13:53Speaker 5: you know, nationwide. And also something to remember is that
- 14:00Speaker 5: after the success of the button-down mind of Bob Newhart,
- 14:04Speaker 5: About a year later, a year and a half later,
- 14:07Speaker 5: he's on national television with his own TV show. Yeah.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Which was, you know, this was the first iteration. It
- 14:15Speaker 5: was called The Bob Newhart Show. It's not the one
- 14:17Speaker 5: everybody remembers. It aired on NBC. It was a sketch
- 14:22Speaker 5: variety show. It was canceled after one season because they
- 14:26Speaker 5: didn't get the viewership that the network wanted. However, it
- 14:29Speaker 5: was recognized by Bob by its... peers in show business,
- 14:34Speaker 5: and it won a Peabody Award, an Emmy Award. But
- 14:39Speaker 5: unfortunately for Bob, he was not a sketch. The show
- 14:44Speaker 5: itself was sort of a combination of Bob's comic monologues,
- 14:48Speaker 5: which he was famous for, and sketches. But he didn't
- 14:52Speaker 5: really like to do the comedy sketches. He wasn't that
- 14:55Speaker 5: sort of comedian. And I think he realized that as
- 14:58Speaker 5: soon as the show aired. So they tried to work
- 15:02Speaker 5: more and more of his monologues, and he still had
- 15:03Speaker 5: to do the sketch comedy. But the show never quite
- 15:06Speaker 5: caught on, and it was canceled after one season by NBC.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Well, you know, one of the surprising things to me
- 15:13Speaker 1: is with the Bob Newhart show and Newhart, two iconic shows,
- 15:18Speaker 1: he never won an Emmy.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Yeah, go figure, right?
- 15:22Speaker 6: I mean.
- 15:24Speaker 5: The Bob Newhart show, the first Bob Newhart show did,
- 15:27Speaker 5: but it was, I think, I don't remember the exact
- 15:32Speaker 5: Emmy award or what, but he personally, you're absolutely right,
- 15:35Speaker 5: never won an Emmy until years later with the Big
- 15:40Speaker 5: Bang Theory.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Yeah, who knew?
- 15:41Speaker 5: Yeah, so. I mean, that's incredible. When you look, you
- 15:46Speaker 5: think Bob Newhart really never won an Emmy. The Bob
- 15:49Speaker 5: Newhart show, the second one that was so popular on CBS,
- 15:52Speaker 5: never won an Emmy. It's just it's a head scratcher,
- 15:55Speaker 5: but it's just one of those things you can't quite
- 15:57Speaker 5: figure out.
- 15:58Speaker 1: And then when they talked him into being this character
- 16:02Speaker 1: on The Big Bang Theory, he said, I'll do it,
- 16:05Speaker 1: but I need an arc. I'm not doing a appearance.
- 16:08Speaker 1: and I want to win an Emmy.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Yeah, Chuck Lorre, the show's creator, had been trying for
- 16:15Speaker 5: quite some time to get Bob on the show. Every season,
- 16:19Speaker 5: he would sort of send him a note saying, now?
- 16:22Speaker 5: And Bob would say, nah, I don't think so. And
- 16:24Speaker 5: then finally, he agreed, and the rest is television history.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Professor Proton, Arthur Jeffries, and yes, he did win an Emmy,
- 16:34Speaker 5: and it opened him up to a whole new generation
- 16:37Speaker 5: of And then he had, you know, the big success
- 16:42Speaker 5: with Elf, obviously Will Ferrell, and that opened him up
- 16:44Speaker 5: to a whole new generation. So, yeah, he later in
- 16:48Speaker 5: life was maybe even worse, you know, better known than
- 16:53Speaker 5: he was earlier in his career.
- 16:55Speaker 1: So let's talk about the iconic shows. 1972, he's been
- 17:01Speaker 1: doing this a while. They finally find this vehicle. I
- 17:06Speaker 1: don't think it was like some of these shows. It
- 17:09Speaker 1: wasn't an immediate success, was it?
- 17:13Speaker 5: No, but it was not. It did okay in its launch,
- 17:19Speaker 5: and it got very good reviews. It took a little
- 17:23Speaker 5: bit of time to find traction. And I think what
- 17:27Speaker 5: helped the show was the fact that it was airing
- 17:30Speaker 5: on Saturday nights on CBS Live. in that vaunted, that
- 17:35Speaker 5: classic lineup with All in the Family, MASH, the Mary
- 17:39Speaker 5: Tyler Moore Show, and the Carol Burnett Show.
- 17:43Speaker 1: That's quite a run right there.
- 17:45Speaker 5: It's unbelievable when you look back on it. I can't
- 17:49Speaker 5: think of any other network, maybe Must See TV and NBC,
- 17:53Speaker 5: but there aren't that many of those kinds of... blockbuster lineups.
- 18:00Speaker 5: So the Bob Newhart show, it did well, and it
- 18:02Speaker 5: picked up traction. It was never, interestingly enough, I think
- 18:07Speaker 5: because it was in that lineup, it was never top
- 18:09Speaker 5: of mind, sort of like All in the Family was
- 18:12Speaker 5: or the Mary Tyler Moore show was. It did well,
- 18:15Speaker 5: and it got great reviews, and it was considered a
- 18:19Speaker 5: classic sitcom. But people would go, oh, yeah, right, the
- 18:22Speaker 5: Bob Newhart show, because I think it was... I don't
- 18:26Speaker 5: want to say it was buried in that lineup. That's
- 18:28Speaker 5: the wrong word. But it was maybe overshadowed a bit
- 18:33Speaker 5: by the other shows that it was part of on
- 18:36Speaker 5: that Saturday night lineup.
- 18:37Speaker 1: It really became iconic when they put it in reruns.
- 18:44Speaker 1: And again, he reached a whole new audience with college students,
- 18:48Speaker 1: didn't he?
- 18:49Speaker 5: Yes, he did. And there's a funny story. In the book,
- 18:53Speaker 5: I believe... that the local station in Chicago, even after
- 18:58Speaker 5: all the success of the show, did not want to... was,
- 19:01Speaker 5: you know, kind of going back and forth whether they
- 19:03Speaker 5: should air the reruns of the Bob Newell show. And
- 19:06Speaker 5: his father wrote a letter to the station manager saying,
- 19:08Speaker 5: you know, like.
- 19:10Speaker 6: What's the deal?
- 19:10Speaker 5: It's like, air my son's show. And obviously they did.
- 19:14Speaker 5: And yes, it was a huge success in syndication, which helped.
- 19:18Speaker 6: And.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Bob was one of the few performers, at least in television,
- 19:27Speaker 5: to follow up one successful show with another successful show, Newhart,
- 19:34Speaker 5: which aired on CBS, which began in 1982, so about
- 19:38Speaker 5: four years after the Bob Newhart show went off the air.
- 19:42Speaker 5: And that's a very rare feat in television, when you
- 19:46Speaker 5: can follow up one big success with maybe even a
- 19:49Speaker 5: big success than your second time around.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I mean, this is a guy who played a character
- 19:56Speaker 1: that was so non-threatening, was he not? He was an everyman.
- 20:02Speaker 5: He was an everyman. And I think the genius of
- 20:05Speaker 5: both of those two shows that we mentioned, the Bob
- 20:08Speaker 5: Newhart show and Newhart's, was that Bob, yes, he carried
- 20:12Speaker 5: the show because he was the star, but he surrounded
- 20:15Speaker 5: himself with, you know, very funny co-stars and he allowed
- 20:21Speaker 5: them to often take center stage. You know, when we
- 20:26Speaker 5: talk about the Bob Newhart show, we think of the patients,
- 20:29Speaker 5: you know, Mr. Carlin and, you know, and people like that.
- 20:33Speaker 5: And when we think of Newhart, You think of Larry,
- 20:39Speaker 5: the three guys.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Larry, Daryl, and Daryl.
- 20:44Speaker 5: So yeah, and I think that was one of the
- 20:46Speaker 5: geniuses of Bob Newhart himself and the producers of those shows,
- 20:51Speaker 5: knowing that Bob could sort of carry the show in
- 20:56Speaker 5: his own way, but at the same time be aided
- 21:00Speaker 5: and abetted in comedy by his co-stars.
- 21:03Speaker 1: And it ends up having, if not the most iconic,
- 21:09Speaker 1: certainly in the top three series endings of all time
- 21:15Speaker 1: that people still talk about to this day.
- 21:19Speaker 5: No doubt. And, you know, that ending for Newhart was
- 21:24Speaker 5: suggested by Bob's wife, Ginny.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah, how about that?
- 21:28Speaker 5: At a Christmas party they were at, and Bob said,
- 21:30Speaker 5: you know what, that's a great idea. And they sold
- 21:33Speaker 5: it to the producers and the writers, and it took
- 21:37Speaker 5: everybody by shock, including even some people on the show
- 21:40Speaker 5: and the studio audience, because they kept it very hush-hush.
- 21:45Speaker 5: Suzanne Plachette agreed to return for that finale, and they
- 21:49Speaker 5: kept her sort of isolated from everybody, hidden in a
- 21:52Speaker 5: trailer so nobody would know she was on the soundstage.
- 21:55Speaker 5: They ushered her in. It was very secretive. you know, they, they,
- 21:59Speaker 5: they took the, the, you know, the, the sort of
- 22:01Speaker 5: the part of that stage away and there they were.
- 22:03Speaker 5: And if you watch that scene on YouTube or whatever,
- 22:07Speaker 5: you can sort of hear the audience go like, wow, their,
- 22:11Speaker 5: their reaction was like astonishment. And there, there they were
- 22:15Speaker 5: Bob and Emily back in bed together. And, you know,
- 22:18Speaker 5: Bob says, boy, I just had the strangest dream. And yeah,
- 22:22Speaker 5: that is, I think you're right, definitely. If not one
- 22:26Speaker 5: of the top three endings in sitcom history.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I just saw a clip on Letterman, and he told
- 22:31Speaker 1: Dave it was more secretive than D-Day.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Yeah, and in those pre-internet days, they had to swear
- 22:42Speaker 5: the TV writers, the journalists who covered television, and the
- 22:46Speaker 5: people in the audience who'd seen it, to secrecy. I'm
- 22:50Speaker 5: not so sure that would happen.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Today with social media. Never would have happened.
- 22:54Speaker 5: Social media, cell phones, that sort of thing. It would
- 22:57Speaker 5: be really, really hard to pull off.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You know, and what's so interesting is, you know, after
- 23:04Speaker 1: the fact, years after the fact, they open up on
- 23:08Speaker 1: the bedroom scene and the audience, the studio audience, immediately
- 23:13Speaker 1: recognize the furniture and the scene from the previous show.
- 23:18Speaker 6: Right.
- 23:18Speaker 5: That's how iconic it was. And as you mentioned before,
- 23:21Speaker 5: it being so successful in syndication that it was, you know,
- 23:26Speaker 5: people might have discovered it, may have discovered the show
- 23:29Speaker 5: for the first time. And it was a staple of
- 23:32Speaker 5: syndicated stations airing the show. So, yes, people were very
- 23:37Speaker 5: familiar with it, that set and their bedroom. They used
- 23:44Speaker 5: all the original stuff that they had the first time around.
- 23:48Speaker 5: And that just made it so much more worthwhile and
- 23:51Speaker 5: so much more fun. for people who are watching the show.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I'll end with this. His friendship with Don Rickles and
- 23:59Speaker 1: their wives was famous. They both talked about it. They
- 24:03Speaker 1: traveled all over the world together. Seemingly, these two guys
- 24:09Speaker 1: that were just the opposite, but in fact, they weren't
- 24:13Speaker 1: necessarily just the opposite, were they?
- 24:16Speaker 5: Yeah, go figure, right? People think, wow, you know, Don
- 24:19Speaker 5: Rickles was brash and in your face and insulting and
- 24:21Speaker 5: Bob was so laid back. But in real life, Don
- 24:25Speaker 5: Rickles was a really nice man. And I mean, it
- 24:30Speaker 5: was an act, his stage persona. And Bob Newhart, as
- 24:34Speaker 5: we've mentioned, was nice. So yes, they got along famously.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Their wives got along famously. Their families were friendly with
- 24:41Speaker 5: each other. So yeah, on the surface, you might say, wow,
- 24:45Speaker 5: I can't imagine those two would ever be friends. But
- 24:48Speaker 5: in real life, they were both very nice down-to-earth guys,
- 24:52Speaker 5: and they discovered that they had a lot in common. And, yeah,
- 24:57Speaker 5: one of the few showbiz friendships that lasted a very
- 25:00Speaker 5: long time and really was a true friendship. It wasn't
- 25:03Speaker 5: just of, you know, yeah, I'll see you next time
- 25:06Speaker 5: I'm on your show, or maybe we'll catch a dinner sometime.
- 25:09Speaker 5: They were very, very close.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Not only showbiz friends, but showbiz marriages. With both of them.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Yes, indeed. And it's just really, I think, speaks a
- 25:26Speaker 5: lot to how both of those men were in real life.
- 25:31Speaker 5: And also how different you can be when people get
- 25:36Speaker 5: to know you. And we think of Don Rickles. I
- 25:38Speaker 5: wrote a book about him, too. And people, you know,
- 25:42Speaker 5: his whole act was insulting people. in a nice, you know,
- 25:46Speaker 5: in a funny way, but he wasn't like that in
- 25:49Speaker 5: real life. And, and the thing about Newhart was what
- 25:52Speaker 5: you saw was what you got, even in real life.
- 25:54Speaker 5: He was, he was just a very down to earth guy.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I mean, you can name on one hand, I'm thinking
- 26:00Speaker 1: the number of performers and stars who had a career
- 26:06Speaker 1: as long and as productive as Newhart did.
- 26:11Speaker 5: Yes, there aren't many. And I, for somebody to thrive
- 26:18Speaker 5: in the medium of television, which is so difficult and
- 26:21Speaker 5: so competitive and cutthroat. We see it even today. Shows air,
- 26:26Speaker 5: they're canceled after five episodes or whatever. For him to
- 26:30Speaker 5: have such a long career and at the same time
- 26:34Speaker 5: balance that television career with... One thing we.
- 26:39Speaker 5: We should mention is that Bob, you know, throughout all
- 26:41Speaker 5: the success, he always toured. He did so many live
- 26:44Speaker 5: shows up until almost, you know, the end of his life.
- 26:49Speaker 5: And so he always kept himself out there. He was
- 26:51Speaker 5: always working, but managed to balance his personal life with
- 26:57Speaker 5: his work life. and managed to keep himself in the
- 27:00Speaker 5: public eye, yet keep his private life private for the
- 27:04Speaker 5: most part. And he was not a scandalous figure, so
- 27:08Speaker 5: there was nothing, quote-unquote, bad to keep out of the spotlight.
- 27:12Speaker 5: But he was a private man, and people respected that.
- 27:16Speaker 1: The book is called Bob Newhart, The Life and Laughter
- 27:19Speaker 1: of an American Treasure. It's through Citadel Press and Kensington Publishing.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Michael Starr is the author. Michael, hey, I love the
- 27:28Speaker 1: book and I really appreciate your time today.

- 27:34Speaker 5: for having me on and I hope people will buy
- 27:36Speaker 5: the book and learn a lot about a very special performer.

- 31:54Speaker 10: Hate to do this early in the week, Mallory, but.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Uh, Character actor Richard Reilly has died at 78. You
- 32:21Speaker 1: would know what he looked like, and you would know
- 32:26Speaker 1: him as Tom Smiszkowski from Office Space, a cult movie.
- 32:33Speaker 1: He played a software company product manager who wins a
- 32:36Speaker 1: settlement from a hit-and-run after he's laid off, pursues his
- 32:40Speaker 1: dream of making a jump-to-conclusions floor mat game. Ha ha.
- 32:45Speaker 1: He's also in Bridesmaids. Sorry, it's hard to talk about
- 32:49Speaker 1: him without laughing, which is always a good thing. He
- 32:55Speaker 1: was 78. Five decades in theater, film, and television. More
- 33:00Speaker 1: than 400 projects. This guy worked a lot. He died
- 33:08Speaker 1: last Thursday. It wasn't announced until today by his family.
- 33:13Speaker 1: But I'm telling you, you would, all you have to
- 33:17Speaker 1: do is look at a picture and you go, oh, okay.
- 33:21Speaker 1: I know who that is.
- 33:21Speaker 11: Yeah, that guy.
- 33:22Speaker 1: That guy.
- 33:23Speaker 5: Man.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Because you've seen him every. Oh, man. One of the
- 33:27Speaker 1: great movies. One of the hilarious movies of all time.
- 33:34Speaker 6: And, you know, I still do want to take a
- 33:35Speaker 6: copy machine out.
- 33:36Speaker 11: Into a field.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Yes.
- 33:38Speaker 11: And just hit it with a bat.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:42Speaker 11: I don't.
- 33:43Speaker 1: I think we'll be able to do that.
- 33:48Speaker 11: Maybe I'll buy you a nice red stapler for Christmas.
- 33:51Speaker 1: You mean buy my stapler? You mean buy my stapler?
- 33:55Speaker 11: Oh, that is sad that he's gone, though.
- 33:57Speaker 1: It is. So while we're doing that, we had talked
- 34:03Speaker 1: about RJ Mitty last week dying.
- 34:09Speaker 11: Very sad.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Very sad. He was only 34. Well, they had his
- 34:14Speaker 1: memorial service in Brownsville. I told you he lived down
- 34:19Speaker 1: in the valley. And his youngest sister, LaChan, is 12
- 34:28Speaker 1: years his junior. Their grandmother were among the relatives who
- 34:33Speaker 1: spoke at his celebration of life in Brownsville last... Friday,
- 34:40Speaker 1: it was. I not only just lost a brother, I
- 34:44Speaker 1: lost my father, she said. My mom was a single mother.
- 34:48Speaker 1: When I was two weeks old, she was in an
- 34:50Speaker 1: accident and paralyzed from the waist down for the first
- 34:53Speaker 1: few years of my life. My brother immediately took on
- 34:57Speaker 1: the father role. All I can say is every part
- 35:02Speaker 1: of me is RJ. Every type of music I listen to,
- 35:05Speaker 1: everything I watch, every game I play are mannerisms. She
- 35:11Speaker 1: reiterated his love for Brownsville, which was his home, his community.
- 35:16Speaker 1: And he had died last week at his home in Brownsville.
- 35:24Speaker 11: Sad.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Like I said, he was only 34, so that
- 35:31Speaker 1: wasn't good. All right, give me some royal news. Let's
- 35:35Speaker 1: do something happy.
- 35:36Speaker 11: I do have some royal news.
- 35:38Speaker 1: I knew you would.
- 35:39Speaker 11: Some family drama.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Oh, good. More family drama.
- 35:46Speaker 11: Literally, though, Harry.
- 35:48Speaker 6: Was asked about his relationships with Prince William and King
- 35:52Speaker 6: Charles in a new interview. He did sit down with
- 35:55Speaker 6: GQ for a video interview, which was filmed in late
- 35:58Speaker 6: September during Harry's visit to New York City. During the chat,
- 36:01Speaker 6: he did bring up Harry's complicated relationship with his father
- 36:05Speaker 6: and brother, asking, is.
- 36:08Speaker 11: That something that you grieve about?
- 36:11Speaker 6: Yes, of course, he answered, adding that the family rifts
- 36:14Speaker 6: are a massively relatable issue for so many people. That
- 36:18Speaker 6: continues to come up with me and the whole the
- 36:21Speaker 6: whole time by the whole time by people that I
- 36:23Speaker 6: speak to. So I know how relatable it is. That's
- 36:26Speaker 6: probably why. Nothing more relatable than being.
- 36:29Speaker 1: A royal drama.
- 36:31Speaker 11: Yeah, that's probably.
- 36:34Speaker 6: Why there's so much fascination. No, it's because you're also
- 36:38Speaker 6: a royal. But anyways, and then people maybe look at
- 36:41Speaker 6: us and go, how are you going to work it out?
- 36:43Speaker 6: And then maybe how I see you're going to work
- 36:46Speaker 6: it out. Maybe that will help me work out my stuff.
- 36:49Speaker 6: And some people don't want it to work out.
- 36:51Speaker 11: I want it to work.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Out for you.
- 36:54Speaker 6: So. There was a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan that
- 36:58Speaker 6: clarified his comment about some people not wanting things to
- 37:01Speaker 6: work out was absolutely not intended as a swipe at
- 37:05Speaker 6: his brother or any other family member. The comment was
- 37:08Speaker 6: made in general, in a general context, and was not
- 37:11Speaker 6: directed at.
- 37:11Speaker 11: His family in any way. Okay. Allegedly.
- 37:15Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 37:16Speaker 6: But.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:17Speaker 6: Moving on, because Princess Kate is wearing a forest green
- 37:20Speaker 6: outfit and stealing the show at Windsor.
- 37:22Speaker 1: No way.
- 37:23Speaker 6: Um.
- 37:24Speaker 3: Apparently.
- 37:25Speaker 11: Oh, my goodness.
- 37:26Speaker 6: As King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and husband Prince William
- 37:29Speaker 6: welcomed the Sultan of Oman to Britain for the traditional
- 37:41Speaker 6: state visit on Tuesday, much of the focus was on
- 37:44Speaker 6: the future queen's look, particularly her striking headpiece.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Did she have a fascinator? I bet it was a fascinator.
- 37:54Speaker 1: When they say headpiece, it's a fascinator.
- 37:58Speaker 11: She got some new headgear.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Yeah, headgear. That's what they call it in England. Headgear. Kate, Kate,
- 38:06Speaker 1: this way, this way. I can't see your headgear.
- 38:11Speaker 6: She was wearing a long-sleeve Alexander McQueen coat.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Oh, they're nice.
- 38:17Speaker 11: Despite the heavy rain.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Wait, wait, wait. There was rain in England?
- 38:23Speaker 5: Apparently.
- 38:23Speaker 1: No way.
- 38:24Speaker 11: Shocking.
- 38:25Speaker 6: I know, guys. But her hat did feature an elegant
- 38:29Speaker 6: bow detail.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Well, duh.
- 38:33Speaker 6: British media reported that both Kate and Camilla's clothing choices
- 38:36Speaker 6: were not at the Omanian flag.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Omanian?
- 38:42Speaker 12: Is that it?
- 38:43Speaker 1: Omanian flag?
- 38:44Speaker 11: I'm so sorry. Anyways, which is made up of green, red,
- 38:48Speaker 11: and white. The queen steps out in the red.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Wool Okay, so Kate is wearing green. I mean, green.
- 38:57Speaker 1: And Camilla is wearing red. Those dressers, they don't miss
- 39:02Speaker 1: a thing, do they?
- 39:04Speaker 6: They don't.
- 39:06Speaker 11: Apparently, the British government did request. Yeah, so I mean, yeah,
- 39:13Speaker 11: there was a great visit.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I mean, I've got a pants shirt and a tennis shoes.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Nobody's writing about that today. You know what I'm saying?
- 39:20Speaker 11: He's got a green dress and Camilla's wearing red.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:23Speaker 11: You're welcome.
- 39:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:24Speaker 1: I'm kind of in a gray and green. So I'm not,
- 39:27Speaker 1: I'm not, I'm not far behind today. I'm not far behind. Uh,
- 39:31Speaker 1: I don't know who I'm wearing today. Wait a minute. Oh,
- 39:35Speaker 1: I'm wearing habit. I'm wearing a habit today.
- 39:41Speaker 5: Cool.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:42Speaker 11: Um, I'm wearing a saint.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Sweater with, by the way, with Hoka shoes.
- 39:49Speaker 6: Yes.
- 39:52Speaker 1: My shoe of choice.
- 39:53Speaker 11: Oh, that's nice.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 39:55Speaker 6: Those are good brand.
- 39:57Speaker 1: And they're bright blue. People like those. Bright blue today.
- 40:00Speaker 13: Oh.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay. I didn't know it was green and red day.
- 40:04Speaker 1: I would have dressed accordingly.
- 40:05Speaker 11: Well, you didn't want to upstage Princess Kate.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Well, no, I did not. I do not want to.
- 40:10Speaker 11: That would be a travesty.
- 40:12Speaker 1: No, that would be bad. I would never be invited again. Actually,
- 40:17Speaker 1: I wasn't really invited this time, unfortunately.
- 40:20Speaker 11: Says who?
- 40:23Speaker 1: Okay, so Jay-Z, we've talked about Jay-Z before being the
- 40:28Speaker 1: Super Bowl kingmaker, right? His company makes decisions on who
- 40:33Speaker 1: is going to, you know, we've been talking about this,
- 40:36Speaker 1: who is going to be this year's entertainment.
- 40:42Speaker 11: Okay, do we have new clues?
- 40:44Speaker 1: Well, we do. Puck News. I don't know what Puck
- 40:49Speaker 1: News is. I don't know.
- 40:51Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 40:52Speaker 1: P-U-C-K. Reliable. Puck News. Has to be true. Saying the
- 40:58Speaker 1: rap mogul thought about who would take the stage for
- 41:02Speaker 1: weeks and ultimately decided he would be the perfect fit.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Multiple sources said saying that choosing Jay was a more
- 41:19Speaker 1: compelling idea than picking Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, both
- 41:26Speaker 1: of whom were believed to be the frontrunners for Super
- 41:31Speaker 1: Bowl 51 or 61 or whatever it is.
- 41:36Speaker 11: Whichever number, yeah.
- 41:38Speaker 1: This year's, it's 61. Okay. This year's Super Bowl.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Will take place at SoFi Stadium. That's in L.A., by
- 41:49Speaker 1: the way. Let's see.
- 41:54Speaker 6: That actually makes sense if you think about it.
- 41:58Speaker 1: You think?
- 41:58Speaker 11: Because you know he's going to be bringing out a
- 42:00Speaker 11: bunch of guests. Yes, he's going to have a ton
- 42:04Speaker 11: of guests. It's in L.A.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Okay, so there's been no official announcement. Rock Nation, owned
- 42:12Speaker 1: by Jay, reportedly secured a $ 5 million a year deal
- 42:18Speaker 1: to produce the halftime show. They re-upped the deal in
- 42:24Speaker 1: 2024 for another five years. So Jay-Z's thinking to himself, look,
- 42:30Speaker 1: I got a contract. If they're going to take me,
- 42:35Speaker 1: I still have another two years after this, so I'm
- 42:37Speaker 1: going on. The Super Bowl halftime performance? of course, hasn't
- 42:42Speaker 1: always been without controversy or controversy, as we like to
- 42:47Speaker 1: say in England. Roc Nation is not confirming this yet,
- 42:55Speaker 1: but we'll see.
- 42:57Speaker 6: Well, I mean, if he does, I mean, Beyonce for
- 43:02Speaker 6: sure will pop out at some point.
- 43:03Speaker 1: You got to, don't you?
- 43:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 43:06Speaker 1: I mean, how could he live with Bey if She
- 43:11Speaker 1: wasn't in the Super Bowl show that he's producing and
- 43:14Speaker 1: starring in.
- 43:14Speaker 11: Exactly.
- 43:15Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 43:16Speaker 11: He's like, you know what? Don't have a fret, guys.
- 43:18Speaker 6: I'm sure Miley and Justin Bieber will pop.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Out at some point, too. Yeah, exactly. That's what I'm thinking. Okay, well,
- 43:26Speaker 1: money's on Jay-Z. All right. What do you think about that?
- 43:31Speaker 6: I mean, I think logistically, sure, it makes sense. Yeah.
- 43:36Speaker 6: He's like, this might be one of the biggest Super Bowls,
- 43:38Speaker 6: not because of the number that it is. Right.
- 43:40Speaker 11: But, I mean... It's L.A.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it is L.A. It's L.A. He's got a lot
- 43:45Speaker 1: of people to choose from. Yeah, he's got a lot
- 43:47Speaker 1: of people to choose from.
- 43:49Speaker 11: So he's like, whoo, bigger than myself.
- 43:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 43:52Speaker 1: You know, maybe I'm not surprised. OK, we'll find out.
- 43:55Speaker 11: We'll keep you posted.
- 43:56Speaker 14: Yeah, we will.
- 43:56Speaker 1: We sure will.
- 43:58Speaker 11: Christina Applegate. We're going to switch gears.
- 44:01Speaker 1: OK.
- 44:01Speaker 6: Has shared a stunning health revelation. She doesn't have MS
- 44:06Speaker 6: after all. She revealed the news in the latest episode
- 44:11Speaker 6: of her messy podcast. It does have Jamie Lynn Sigler
- 44:15Speaker 6: that is focused on living with MS. She had previously
- 44:19Speaker 6: shared in 2021 that she was diagnosed with MS, an
- 44:22Speaker 6: autoimmune disease, which we know. But on her podcast episode,
- 44:26Speaker 6: she said this was a misdiagnosis. She broke down in
- 44:29Speaker 6: tears and recounted how the doctor recently told her, congratulations, you.
- 44:34Speaker 11: Don't have MS.
- 44:35Speaker 6: This may come as great news, but to me it
- 44:37Speaker 6: comes as a back to square one. And while everyone
- 44:41Speaker 6: in her life was relieved, her reaction to the news
- 44:45Speaker 6: was not happy at all, noting, you don't get misdiagnosed
- 44:49Speaker 6: and all of a sudden I'm better.
- 44:50Speaker 11: I haven't gotten better. If anything, I've gotten worse in
- 44:54Speaker 11: some ways. So I'm back to.
- 44:55Speaker 6: Square one and I don't know what's going on with me,
- 44:57Speaker 6: which I can understand.
- 44:58Speaker 11: At least when you have a diagnosis.
- 45:01Speaker 1: You think, oh, this is what's going on. Yeah, and
- 45:03Speaker 1: then you start treating it.
- 45:05Speaker 11: Exactly.
- 45:06Speaker 6: The Star explained that doctors will have to continue investigating
- 45:09Speaker 6: what has been happening to her because she's had every
- 45:12Speaker 6: symptom of someone with MS, including weakness, pain and difficulty walking.
- 45:18Speaker 6: She did say her first MS symptom was numbness in
- 45:21Speaker 6: her toes, which extended to her legs. And on October
- 45:23Speaker 6: 20th' s podcast, she told listeners it hurts to stand up.
- 45:27Speaker 6: And that is her current symptom, besides including being fatigued,
- 45:32Speaker 6: noting she does She likes, she's sleeping all the time. Wow.
- 45:35Speaker 6: So she said, I had reasons as to why my
- 45:38Speaker 6: day sucked every day.
- 45:39Speaker 11: And now I don't have a reason.
- 45:41Speaker 6: And it's very unnerving and it's really confusing.
- 45:45Speaker 1: I hate that.
- 45:46Speaker 11: So I can understand that sucks. Like that's, that's a lot.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Tim McGraw had his, excuse me, had his family by
- 45:57Speaker 1: his side when he was inducted Sunday night to the
- 46:02Speaker 1: country music hall of fame posed with wife, Faith Hill,
- 46:07Speaker 1: two daughters, Audrey and Maggie and Apple and Fiona McGraw
- 46:17Speaker 1: could be seen wearing a black cowboy hat and red suit.
- 46:23Speaker 1: He opted for a, she opted for a black lacy dress. Um,
- 46:34Speaker 1: With Audrey. And then Maggie had a black velvet dress
- 46:40Speaker 1: with floral details. He was inducted alongside Paul Overstreet, the
- 46:46Speaker 1: Stanley Brothers, during the annual ceremony. It hadn't been on
- 46:50Speaker 1: TV yet. I know it's been taped for TV. You
- 46:53Speaker 1: know what tomorrow night is? It's the live Dolly show
- 46:57Speaker 1: tomorrow night.
- 46:58Speaker 11: Oh, I didn't know.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Now I do. Yeah. And we'll talk more about it tomorrow.
- 47:03Speaker 1: But just so you know, put it on your calendar.
- 47:07Speaker 1: I told my wife this weekend, every agent in the
- 47:11Speaker 1: world has been calling the network saying, hey, can we
- 47:14Speaker 1: go on and do a Dolly song? Because there are
- 47:16Speaker 1: a bunch of acts. I don't know how long it's
- 47:20Speaker 1: scheduled to be. I'm guessing two hours, but I don't
- 47:23Speaker 1: know how they're getting everybody in. It is a long
- 47:26Speaker 1: list of people that are going to be performing tomorrow
- 47:30Speaker 1: night during this deal.
- 47:32Speaker 5: Oh, I bet.
- 47:34Speaker 11: I can only imagine.
- 47:35Speaker 1: He, of course, praised Faith Hill, whom he said, the
- 47:41Speaker 1: only thing that can beat this night is when you're
- 47:43Speaker 1: standing here and I'm sitting there telling his daughters, you're
- 47:49Speaker 1: the best thing we've ever made. Nothing in our careers
- 47:52Speaker 1: come even close. Good for them. They've been together for
- 47:56Speaker 1: a while. I will say that.
- 47:58Speaker 11: They really have.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Now, Don't expect John Goodman on Roseanne's new show, Meemaw.
- 48:09Speaker 1: There will not be a Connor family reunion. Roseanne telling
- 48:14Speaker 1: The Hollywood Reporter that her on-screen husband won't be popping in.
- 48:20Speaker 1: She says, my son called Goodman and asked him to
- 48:23Speaker 1: do a cameo and he declined. Roseanne's revelation came after
- 48:28Speaker 1: the interviewer asked how she got along with John and
- 48:31Speaker 1: Laurie Metcalf, who starred in Roseanne. She says she is
- 48:36Speaker 1: not in contact with either of them, adding, nobody is
- 48:40Speaker 1: more brokenhearted than me. I just choose to remember the
- 48:44Speaker 1: fun and the good times. So I suspect she was
- 48:48Speaker 1: a little difficult to work with. I'm just saying I
- 48:51Speaker 1: don't know that.
- 48:53Speaker 11: I can see that. I do have a short update
- 48:56Speaker 11: on Carrot Top.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Oh, we don't do enough Carrot Top around here. We
- 49:01Speaker 1: just talked about it briefly. We did.
- 49:02Speaker 6: Yeah, a couple weeks ago because he had, unfortunately, that
- 49:05Speaker 6: suicide attempt.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Yes, he did.
- 49:07Speaker 6: But he has made his return to the Sin City
- 49:10Speaker 6: stage after the scary suicide attempt.
- 49:12Speaker 1: Back in Vegas. You know, I'm going next month. Maybe
- 49:15Speaker 1: I can call the top and get some tickets.
- 49:18Speaker 11: Maybe you can. He was back.
- 49:20Speaker 6: On stage at the Luxor.
- 49:21Speaker 1: The Luxor.
- 49:24Speaker 5: Luxor.
- 49:26Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Luxor.
- 49:28Speaker 11: In Las Vegas.
- 49:30Speaker 1: Okay. You've seen a picture of it. It's really old.
- 49:34Speaker 1: It's the huge black pyramid with the gigantic spotlight that
- 49:39Speaker 1: comes out of the top of it that can be
- 49:41Speaker 1: seen on the moon right okay.
- 49:43Speaker 6: There's that so that's where he's at okay monday night
- 49:48Speaker 6: um as the audience did roar for him with a
- 49:51Speaker 6: standing ovation after his return making his first uh performance
- 49:55Speaker 6: since uh he did overdose on prescription meds last month
- 49:59Speaker 6: um the other day he did go to social media
- 50:03Speaker 6: to thank his fans, uh, for their support during such
- 50:06Speaker 6: a tough time saying it meant more to me than,
- 50:08Speaker 6: you know, hopefully he's continuing to get whatever help he
- 50:11Speaker 6: needs because a month isn't.
- 50:14Speaker 11: A whole lot of time.
- 50:15Speaker 1: There is, by the way, there is a documentary on
- 50:18Speaker 1: Netflix on Norm MacDonald that I would highly recommend. Um, yeah, just,
- 50:24Speaker 1: just watched it this last week.
- 50:27Speaker 11: Okay.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Parts of it are tough, but, uh, Honestly, at the end,
- 50:31Speaker 1: there's redemption. So I really enjoyed it. And he's hilarious. Hilarious. Okay,
- 50:39Speaker 1: let's do some birthdays, can we?
- 50:41Speaker 11: We can try.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Sunday. Oh, friend of the show. Russ Giger of the Association.
- 50:49Speaker 1: 83 on Sunday.
- 50:52Speaker 7: Wow.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Pam Dauber. She was Mindy of Mark and Mindy. 76
- 50:56Speaker 1: on Sunday. Jean-Claude Van Damme, still kicking butt and beating
- 51:05Speaker 1: bad guys. 66 on Sunday. Let's see. Neo turned 47 Sunday.
- 51:16Speaker 1: I bet you didn't know that.
- 51:17Speaker 5: I didn't.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Now I do. Let's see. Zac Efron turned 39 on Sunday.
- 51:26Speaker 1: I thought he was older than that. I'll be honest
- 51:29Speaker 1: with you.
- 51:31Speaker 11: Me too.
- 51:33Speaker 1: Let's see. Yesterday, John Lithgow turned 81 yesterday. Jeannie C.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Riley turned 81 years young yesterday. Let's see. What else
- 51:50Speaker 1: do we have? No. No. John Favreau turned 61. Chris
- 52:04Speaker 1: Catan from Saturday Night Live. I don't know that I
- 52:07Speaker 1: know who that is. Do you?
- 52:09Speaker 11: I know that name, so I think if I saw him, yes.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Yeah, probably so. 56 yesterday.
- 52:14Speaker 10: Okay.
- 52:17Speaker 1: We always like these country music singers that we've never
- 52:21Speaker 1: heard of.
- 52:21Speaker 11: Give one a shout out. Cindy Thompson.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Cindy Thompson. 50 yesterday. Oh, good old Cindy.
- 52:27Speaker 11: Happy birthday.
- 52:29Speaker 1: I had never heard of you, but happy birthday just
- 52:32Speaker 1: the same.
- 52:32Speaker 11: Yeah, I hope it was the best.
- 52:34Speaker 1: I hope it was great for you. Okay, let's do today,
- 52:43Speaker 1: can we? We have got another country rockabilly legend, actually.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Wanda Jackson is 89 years young today.
- 52:55Speaker 6: Nice.
- 52:56Speaker 5: Nice.
- 52:57Speaker 11: Happy birthday.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:01Speaker 11: Let's see.
- 53:02Speaker 6: William Russ from Boy Meets World and Wiseguy is 76.
- 53:06Speaker 1: Oh, Viggo Mortensen. We know him. He turned 68 today.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Happy birthday to you, Viggo.
- 53:16Speaker 11: Did you know today is Snoop Dogg's birthday?
- 53:19Speaker 1: I did not know it was Snoop Dogg's birthday.
- 53:22Speaker 11: How is this not a holiday?
- 53:24Speaker 1: Thank you. Not only, hey, okay, two things. Why isn't
- 53:30Speaker 1: it a holiday? Number one. Number two, why wasn't I
- 53:34Speaker 1: invited to the party?
- 53:36Speaker 11: Come on, Snoop.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Come on, Snoop.
- 53:40Speaker 11: What are you doing?
- 53:40Speaker 1: He's 55. John Krasinski, Jim from The Office, and Jack Ryan,
- 53:49Speaker 1: 47 years young today. I remember when he was just
- 53:53Speaker 1: a pup. How about that? Happy birthday to John Krasinski.
- 53:58Speaker 1: I like him.
- 54:00Speaker 11: Okay.
- 54:02Speaker 1: I think that's enough for now. That's all we can
- 54:05Speaker 1: do for now. That's enough birthdays for now. If it's
- 54:08Speaker 1: your birthday, happy birthday. Okay.
- 54:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 54:11Speaker 11: Happy birthday.
- 54:12Speaker 1: We may or may not be back tomorrow. We plan
- 54:14Speaker 1: on it, I think.
- 54:16Speaker 11: We always hope for the best, guys.
- 54:17Speaker 1: We always hope. And they're going, oh, please no. Mallory

- 55:30Speaker 16: The Dallas Cowboys dropped their second straight game last night,
- 55:33Speaker 16: falling to the Green Bay Packers 23-13. Dallas struggled on
- 55:37Speaker 16: both sides of the ball as Dak Prescott threw two
- 55:39Speaker 16: interceptions on the offensive side, and the defense allowed the
- 55:42Speaker 16: Packers to convert 11 of their 18 third downs. Dak
- 55:46Speaker 16: Prescott spoke after the game on how the team needs
- 55:48Speaker 16: a win to get back on track.
- 55:50Speaker 17: Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, you lose two games
- 55:52Speaker 17: in a row. It doesn't feel good. We've put ourselves
- 55:58Speaker 17: in this position, and so, I mean, It's what, 11
- 56:00Speaker 17: games or something like that left. We just got to
- 56:03Speaker 17: take it one at a time. We just got to
- 56:04Speaker 17: go get a win. And that's the only way to
- 56:06Speaker 17: get to work our way out of this hole and
- 56:08Speaker 17: to get momentum going and to get, yeah, just to
- 56:12Speaker 17: get the confidence and roll on both sides of the
- 56:15Speaker 17: ball and special teams included. And we need some good momentum.
- 56:19Speaker 17: And the only way to do it is get a win.
- 56:20Speaker 16: Dallas plays on Monday night next week against the Philadelphia
