- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37Our walk our lives should demonstrate what we believe, our
- 0:40lifestyle, our behavior, all that should demonstrate what we
- 0:44believe or not. Be one who proclaim to know God,
- 0:48but then our behavior disqualifies us or our behavior
- 0:52cause us to look like. We deny Him because of the way
- 0:55that we behave, but we should walk in obedience to the Lord.
- 1:00Our example is Jesus Christ, who loved us so much that he died
- 1:04for us. What do people really see when
- 1:06they watch how you live? In today's message, Pastor Lewis
- 1:10reminds us that our walk must match our talk.
- 1:14The way we live, the choices we make, and the love we show
- 1:18should clearly demonstrate what we say we believe.
- 1:21No one should hear us claim to know God while our behavior
- 1:26looks like we deny Him. Your lifestyle is the loudest
- 1:30sermon you'll ever possibly preach.
- 1:33How does your daily behavior show the world that you truly
- 1:37belong to Jesus now? Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book
- 1:41of First Timothy, chapter 4, with today's edition of Living
- 1:45Waters of Grace. It is important that we give
- 1:49thanks to God when you know, I love when I'm sitting in a
- 1:51restaurant and there's another family that's there and we see
- 1:55them praying together before they eat.
- 1:56I love seeing that. I love seeing that.
- 1:59I love seeing young kids who understand that I don't eat
- 2:02anything off this table until I give thanks.
- 2:06That's a wonderful thing, a wonderful thing.
- 2:09Give thanks. So then in verse 6, he goes on,
- 2:11he says if you instruct the brother in these things and what
- 2:15things and all the things we just got finished talking about
- 2:18instructor brothers about these bad false teachers, instruct
- 2:22them about how to look out for these doctrines of demons and
- 2:26these deceiving spirits. Instructor brethren about
- 2:30setting things apart for the Lord's purpose and doing all
- 2:33things unto the Lord. He says, if you do that, then
- 2:38you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ.
- 2:42Nourished. I love this word nourished in
- 2:44the words of faith. That word nourished.
- 2:47It's a powerful word. It means actually need to be
- 2:49sustained, sustained by the words of faith, to be supplied
- 2:54with everything that's necessary for my life, for life and living
- 2:59and health is all. And my spiritual growth is all
- 3:02supplied to me, and I'm sustained through the words of
- 3:07faith to the words of faith. Studying the Word of God has
- 3:12impact on our lives in so many different areas.
- 3:15Obeying the Word of God has impact in our lives in so many
- 3:19different areas. It sustains us.
- 3:23It sustains us. And then he says it's a good
- 3:26minister of Jesus Christ who is sustained by the words of faith.
- 3:30It's a good minister that has supplied everything that is
- 3:33necessary for life through the Word of God.
- 3:38And it's important for pastors. No Pastor Clark is able to sit
- 3:41in here today and be fed. He feeds us so much.
- 3:45He feeds us so much, but he understands that it's important
- 3:49for him to also be fed. There's ways that you can
- 3:52actually know, spend so much time and be so focused on
- 3:55feeding everybody else and you die of starvation.
- 3:58It's important for us to be fed as Christians.
- 4:02We go out and we share Christ. We share the word of God with
- 4:05people, we share it with our families, we share it with our
- 4:07friends, we share it with our Co workers and we're always giving,
- 4:11sharing it and distributing. But it's also important that we
- 4:14be fed so we can be nourished, so that we can have what's
- 4:17needed to be able to give out. It's so important and then here
- 4:22in verse 7 and verse 7 he says, but reject, reject profane an
- 4:28old wise fables and exercise yourself toward godliness.
- 4:33Verse 8 says for bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness
- 4:38is profitable for all things, having the promise of the life
- 4:41that now is and of that which is to come.
- 4:45This is a faithful saying and worthy of acceptance.
- 4:49Paul saying here, he's addressing the whole issue of
- 4:54physical exercise, which was important in Greek culture
- 4:57because remember, they put a lot of emphasis on physical activity
- 5:02and physical fitness. That's why we get the Olympic
- 5:05Games and some of these other athletic events.
- 5:08They come, most of those come out of Greece because they put a
- 5:11lot of emphasis on that. They see physical fitness as
- 5:15being a self-discipline, self-discipline.
- 5:18They see it as being medicinal. It's good for my health, my
- 5:22physical health, it's good for the mental health.
- 5:25And they see that. So they really look very highly
- 5:28valued. They really highly value people
- 5:31who give themselves to physical fitness over there in Greece.
- 5:35And you know what, we used to do it here.
- 5:37You know, we do it here. Remember during the time when
- 5:39physical fitness started to get real popular and gyms were
- 5:42popping up everywhere physical, you know, fitness facilities
- 5:44were popping up everywhere. You got LA Fitness, you got at
- 5:47one time they had, what was it called, Scandinavian, whatever.
- 5:50I can't remember the name of that now, but that was a
- 5:52fitness. They had all kind of fitness
- 5:53centers, neighborhood fitness centers, you name it, and people
- 5:57were just gone involved in. If jogging was popular at one
- 6:00time, then it wasn't. Tennis was popular at one time,
- 6:02then it wasn't. Racquetball.
- 6:04Remember racquetball that was popular at one time, then it
- 6:07wasn't, you know, weightlifting. All the men were in the
- 6:09weightlifting and, and building up their bodies and being
- 6:12physically strong. All those things are popular at
- 6:14one time and then it wasn't, I remember even for myself that I,
- 6:19I know you can't tell by it now, but there was a time that I used
- 6:23to work out probably six days a week.
- 6:26I was really into physical fitness, I mean really into it.
- 6:30And I thought that if I didn't work out at least an hour, 2
- 6:34hours a day or what not, that man, I was terrible.
- 6:37I was the worst thing in the world.
- 6:39I wasn't saved then. I had many hours of physical
- 6:43fitness, 0 hours in the word of God, 0 wasn't even going to
- 6:47church, Wasn't even going to church.
- 6:50And what I'm saying here is that not that physical fitness is a
- 6:52bad thing, it is still a good thing to be physically fit.
- 6:56But when your body becomes your God, that's when it becomes a
- 6:59bad thing because now you've turned it into an idol.
- 7:02I did that. My body became my idol.
- 7:06I spent much more time worshipping that in front of a
- 7:10mirror, right? You train, They got mirrors all
- 7:13over the place so you can see what you look like.
- 7:15You're worshiping, worshiping. And I spent many times, many
- 7:19hours doing that on my own body. 0 hours with the Lord.
- 7:25And I think about what the Lord said in the garden with Peter.
- 7:29Peter, you couldn't watch with me for one hour, for one hour in
- 7:35my life, in our lives. Do we give God at least one hour
- 7:41as a minimum? Do we give him at least one
- 7:43hour? Not that it's a religious thing.
- 7:45Not saying that if you don't do it, then you're not as righteous
- 7:48as the person that does do it. That's what he's saying at all.
- 7:51What he's saying is where is God in our lives?
- 7:55Is he a priority? It's just us thinking about
- 7:58that, putting him in perspective.
- 8:01Is he a priority? So Paul's saying here, yeah,
- 8:04physical exercise here in verse 8.
- 8:06It does profit, but it profits a little.
- 8:09It profits a little. It's only profitable for here
- 8:12while we're here. It does not take you beyond the
- 8:14grave. And even those that are
- 8:17physically fit, they will die of something if Jesus Christ don't
- 8:21come back first. But he is saying here that it
- 8:24does profit a little, but the profit is minimum.
- 8:27There's a limited profit, but godliness, young son Timothy,
- 8:32Godliness is profitable for all things.
- 8:36It's not just profitable for you being here, but it's profitable
- 8:39for later on, and it's also profitable in eternity.
- 8:43It's profitable for all things. It's profitable for mind, body
- 8:47and soul, Timothy, and that's what he said to us.
- 8:51The word of God and pursuing godliness is profitable in all
- 8:56things, not just some, not just some.
- 9:00And the important thing is that though we must suffer because he
- 9:04says here, he says here having the promise of life that now is
- 9:08and that which is to come. And he said that that is a
- 9:10faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance.
- 9:14That means it's, it's a trustworthy word.
- 9:17But then verse 10, he says for to this end, or in other words,
- 9:20for this reason, Timothy, we both labor or we strive and we
- 9:25suffer reproach. Why for godliness.
- 9:28We do it for godliness because it is profitable not only for
- 9:32now and it's also profitable for the life that is to come.
- 9:36So we strive for godliness, we seek godliness, we pursue
- 9:41godliness, and we suffer reproach.
- 9:44We suffer the shame, we suffer the mocking, we suffer the
- 9:48persecution. We do all that, and we do it
- 9:50because we trust in the look at what he says.
- 9:53He doesn't just say we trust in God, He says we trust in the
- 9:56living God, the living God not trusting in the idols that the
- 10:02Ephesians trusted in, not trusting in those statues that
- 10:06they did, the statue of Diana and the other statues, not
- 10:09trusting in those we're trusting in the living God and his
- 10:13promises are sure. We have hope, and that's what
- 10:18we're trusting in. That's what we're trusting in.
- 10:22And I pray that we put our trust in the right thing.
- 10:26We put our trust in the right thing, put our trust in Jesus
- 10:29Christ who gives us all things, but most of all he gives us the
- 10:34hope of salvation which we have and eternity which we have.
- 10:38And then he goes on, He says, who is the Savior?
- 10:41Meaning, meaning Jesus Christ who is the Savior of all men,
- 10:46especially those who believe He's a preserver.
- 10:50This is not a universality or universalism.
- 10:53He's not talking about everyone's going to be saved.
- 10:55That's not what he's saying. What he is saying is that he is
- 10:58the one who created all men. He is the one who preserves all
- 11:01men. He's the one who died for all
- 11:04men. Over here chapter 2 over in
- 11:07verse 4, he says who desires, meaning God desires all men to
- 11:12be saved, all right. And then over here in verse 6,
- 11:15chapter 2, verse 6, it says who gave himself a ransom for all,
- 11:19so he died for all and his desires that all get saved.
- 11:23But he realizes that it's only those who puts their faith in
- 11:27Jesus Christ. Only those who believe on Jesus
- 11:30Christ, only those who have repented and trust in Jesus
- 11:34Christ for their salvation will be saved, will have the benefits
- 11:40of salvation, which is eternal life.
- 11:43But yes, He died for everyone. Everyone has the opportunity to
- 11:47get saved and then he goes on and this is when this is the
- 11:51meat of it right here. And after this we'll start to
- 11:54wind down. But in verse 12, this is my
- 11:57favorite part because this is really direct instruction and it
- 12:01gives us exactly what we need to go into every single day.
- 12:06This is what we strive for as Christians.
- 12:09He says let no one despise your youth but be an example to the
- 12:12believers and this be an example to the believers or it could be
- 12:16be an example of the believers in both words fit in the Greek
- 12:20text, but it's being an example to the believers where examples
- 12:25to those who are in the church to our brothers and our sisters
- 12:28who are in the church. But it also says of the
- 12:32believers, that means that when we're out in the world, we're to
- 12:35be an example of believers to the world or to those who are
- 12:40not saved. And he goes and he says, what is
- 12:44it that we should be examples for?
- 12:45He gives us six things. Now, other manuscripts, there's
- 12:49only 5. The one that's missing in other
- 12:51manuscripts is Spirit. We'll talk about that when we
- 12:54get to it. But in this version, it gives us
- 12:566. He says we should be an example
- 12:58in Word. in Word, our speech should be honest and loving
- 13:03towards each other. We shouldn't have speech that
- 13:05we're talking down to each other or mocking each other or being
- 13:10disrespectful to each other. We shouldn't be slanderous to
- 13:14each other. Our speech should be honest and
- 13:16be loving. The Bible says even when we
- 13:18confront each other, if we have to confront each other with an
- 13:21issue, we still speak the truth and love.
- 13:24According to Ephesians 4 and 15, our speech should not be corrupt
- 13:29or shouldn't be filthy or slanderous, but it should be
- 13:33edifying. It should be encouraging to each
- 13:36other. I was listening to my brother
- 13:38Tom on Wednesday night and he was talking about being around
- 13:42people who are encouraging, being around encouraging people
- 13:45and how it makes you feel or how it impacts you.
- 13:48When you're around someone that's encouraging and when
- 13:51you're around someone that's encouraging, it does have a
- 13:53positive impact on you. It builds your help build your
- 13:56faith for one thing, but it also causes you to look at things a
- 14:00little differently, look at things a little differently.
- 14:02It's not that self defeated attitude that we may have walked
- 14:06into when we first saw them, but we leave there.
- 14:08We just feel better and that's what happens with people who are
- 14:12encouraging. So our communication should be
- 14:15encouraging, it should be edifying, you know, as it says
- 14:19in Ephesians 4 and 29. Let no corrupt word proceed out
- 14:22of your mouth but that which is for the necessary edification,
- 14:27that it may impart. Grace to the hears, not
- 14:30condemnation. Not more toil, you know, but but
- 14:33grace to the hears. Our speech should not be
- 14:36condemning to others, but it should always be with grace.
- 14:40When Jesus Christ came, he came full of grace and truth, and we
- 14:45should be examples of that grace and truth here in the earth
- 14:48realm. We should be examples of that.
- 14:51And even in Colossians 4 and six, he said, let your speech
- 14:53always be with grace, with grace.
- 14:58And then also he says that the word, we should also have this
- 15:03word, not just that we should our speech should be sanctified
- 15:06or should be edifying or encouraging, but we should also
- 15:09have knowledge of the word. So that the word when we speak
- 15:12to people and we share the word of God, we should do it from a
- 15:16place of knowledge. So that's when he's talking
- 15:19about growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior
- 15:22Jesus Christ. And then in conduct, he said we
- 15:26should be an examples in conduct, our walk, our lives
- 15:28should demonstrate what we believe, our lifestyle, our
- 15:31behavior. All that should demonstrate what
- 15:34we believe or not be one who proclaim to know God.
- 15:38But then our behavior disqualifies us or our behavior
- 15:43cause us to look like we deny him because of the way that we
- 15:46behave. But we should walk in obedience
- 15:49to the Lord. Our example is Jesus Christ who
- 15:53loved us so much that he died for us.
- 15:55That's love. Our faith is motivated through
- 15:58love. The things that we do or the
- 16:00motivation for anything that we do in ministry or even towards
- 16:04each other, it should always be love.
- 16:06It should never be because of what I can get for myself.
- 16:08It should never be because then I look more positive if I do
- 16:11this. It should never be with through
- 16:13selfish ambition. It should be through love.
- 16:16And then he says in spirit, in spirit.
- 16:19In other words, have an attitude that reflects the spirit of
- 16:23Jesus Christ. One of the greatest examples
- 16:26that I always referred back to is back in Luke Chapter 9 and
- 16:29verse 55 when they were going through Samaria.
- 16:32Jesus Christ and the disciples were going through Samaria
- 16:35trying to get to Jerusalem, and the Samaritans denied them from
- 16:39going through. They denied them and his
- 16:41disciples got upset about it. They said, Lord, do you want us
- 16:44to just call down fire from heaven and have them burned up
- 16:47the way Elijah did it? And what was Jesus's response?
- 16:51There was a loving response. He said no, no, no.
- 16:53You don't know what spirit you are of.
- 16:57You don't know what spirit you. That's not my spirit.
- 17:00He said the Son of Man didn't come to destroy man.
- 17:04I came to save man. I came to save man.
- 17:09When we have interactions with people, we may want to destroy
- 17:12them, but we got to remember that's not the spirit we are of.
- 17:15We want to get them back. We want them to know that they
- 17:18offended us, and you can't do that to me.
- 17:21But we're not here to destroy man.
- 17:23We are here to save man. So then he says also we should
- 17:28be examples in faith. Faith leads to faithfulness.
- 17:33Someone who was a Christian, someone who was involved in
- 17:36Christianity should always be a person that's faithful, which
- 17:40means trustworthy. When we trust, we adhere to, we
- 17:43rely on Jesus Christ. We should be examples of that.
- 17:47Our faith leads to faithfulness. When we say we're going to do
- 17:52something, people should have confidence in the fact that
- 17:55we're going to do it and we should do it.
- 17:57And then of course, the last one is impurity.
- 17:59And Paul was very clear, and there's a reason why he wanted
- 18:03him to be impurity because he was in Ephesus.
- 18:06Ephesus was a city that was highly charged in sexual
- 18:10immorality, just like it is here, you know, in our country,
- 18:13in our world, you know, there, there's, I mean, there's so much
- 18:16temptation and so much immorality around us.
- 18:20It's so easy to get taken up into that.
- 18:22And Timothy was a young man. He was only about 30 years old
- 18:24around this time. So it was very easy for him to
- 18:27be tempted. And Paul said, no, we, you have
- 18:30to be an example, Timothy, you got to be an example for
- 18:33believers even in your purity. First Thessalonians chapter 4,
- 18:38it talks about, he said, this is the will of God for you.
- 18:42Even your sanctification, our purity, that's God's will for
- 18:46us. That's how we demonstrate who we
- 18:49belong to and Timothy, and that's why Paul told Timothy in
- 18:52First Timothy chapter 5 verse two.
- 18:55He told Timothy. He said listen, admonish or
- 18:58encourage. I'm sorry.
- 18:59He says encourage the young women in the church as sisters.
- 19:04We need to be in here. We see women, one of you, either
- 19:08one of you, one or the other. If I ain't married to you, then
- 19:10you're my sister. I treat you as my sister.
- 19:13If I'm married to you, then you're my wife.
- 19:15And this is what he's telling Timothy.
- 19:17I have to be pure. Timothy, you have to be pure.
- 19:20You have to be pure. And then he goes on and he says
- 19:24verse 13. He says till I, till I, till I
- 19:26come, give attention to reading, to exhortation and to doctrine,
- 19:31to reading. He's talking about public
- 19:33reading, reading the word of God publicly and exhortation.
- 19:36He's talking about preaching the word of God, encouraging people
- 19:39to do what the word of God says to do, encouraging people to
- 19:44obey that and in doctrine, which is the systematic teaching of
- 19:48different doctrines of the faith.
- 19:50For example, there's the doctrine of creation or
- 19:53salvation or the end times to systematically teach these
- 19:57things. He said Timothy, till I come
- 19:59give attention to those things. And then in 14, he says,
- 20:02Timothy, don't neglect the gift that is in you, which was given
- 20:07to you by prophecy with the laying on of hands by the
- 20:10eldership. Timothy had a gift, and that
- 20:13gift it was imported to. Timothy, through the laying on
- 20:17of hands, now God doesn't have to use other people to impart a
- 20:21gift. God can just give people.
- 20:23But that's one of the ways sometimes that people are
- 20:25commissioned, that people are sent out.
- 20:27The elders will come and they'll lay hands on them and they'll
- 20:30send these people out. That's one of the ways that he
- 20:33does it. And he said, Timothy, don't
- 20:34neglect that gift that was given to you.
- 20:36And apparently he did at one time neglected.
- 20:39So in Second Timothy chapter 1 and 6, he said, listen Timothy,
- 20:44stir up the gift that was given to you.
- 20:47Don't let that gift lay dormant. And there's a lot of ways that
- 20:50we can neglect the gift. We can neglect it by misusing
- 20:53it, or we can neglect it by abusing it.
- 20:57One way or the other, we can neglect that gift.
- 20:59We shouldn't have talents that we hide or that we bury.
- 21:03We should use the gifts that the Lord has given us.
- 21:05And then the 15 says, meditate on these things.
- 21:07Give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be
- 21:11evident to all. When you're spending time with
- 21:14the Lord, when you're studying the Word of God more, when
- 21:17you're spending more time seeking God, the evidence of
- 21:20that becomes obvious to other people.
- 21:23They can see it in you when you are spending more time with the
- 21:27Lord, your progress becomes evident to everybody and we all
- 21:32want to continue to progress in the Lord.
- 21:35And then in verse 16, he says, take heed to yourself and to
- 21:39your doctrine, continuing them for doing this you will say both
- 21:44yourself and those who hear you. So he says, OK, you give
- 21:49yourselves to your ministry and to the seeking the Lord.
- 21:52You give yourself to that and your progress will be evident.
- 21:56But then, he says, also remember to take heed to yourself from
- 22:00time to time. Take heed to yourself into the
- 22:02doctrine. In other words, where am I in
- 22:05the faith? Where am I am I lining up with
- 22:09what the Word of God is telling me to do?
- 22:12As it says in Second Corinthians chapter 13 and five, examine
- 22:15yourself as to whether you are in the faith.
- 22:19Am I lining up? Am I lining up?
- 22:21Am I where I need to be? Are there things that I need to
- 22:25give to the Lord that I have not surrendered myself to yet?
- 22:28Are there things I need to give to the Lord?
- 22:30What am I trusting Lord to change in my life and in my
- 22:33heart? And am I really trusting and
- 22:34seeking Him to do it? Acknowledging those things and
- 22:39we need to understand that when we do those things, we both save
- 22:42ourself and we save those who hear us.
- 22:46When we are good examples to the Lord, people who see us then
- 22:51want what we have and those people get saved.
- 22:54They come looking to the Lord. A good example of that was Paul
- 22:57when he and Silas was in jail in Philippi, when they were in jail
- 23:01because of the way they behave themselves, being under
- 23:05persecution, being tormented, beaten in stocks, because of the
- 23:11way they behave themselves, the jailer came to them and said
- 23:15what must I do to be saved? May our lives be that way, that
- 23:19people see our conduct in every area of our lives and it be
- 23:23something that's sought to them. They want, they want it, they
- 23:27want it. What must I do to be saved?
- 23:30So Paul says, look, we have to preach the Word, we have to
- 23:33practice the Word, and we have to progress in the Word.
- 23:38Timothy. That's what a good minister
- 23:41does. This is what Paul is saying to
- 23:42Timothy, because when we do these things, then we build up
- 23:46ourselves, but then we also help win the loss when we do those
- 23:52things. Amen.
- 23:54God bless you. Thank you for tuning in to
- 23:58Living Waters of Grace with Pastor Lewis Harrell.
- 24:02We're currently in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:05Some of the things included in these New Testament letters from
- 24:09Paul are that the young and newly established Pastor Timothy
- 24:14was being encouraged to hold fast to what was true.
- 24:18He was challenged to confront and address the false teachers
- 24:22that were rising up. He was also reminded to accept
- 24:26his calling to the ministry with gratefulness and to address the
- 24:29happenings going on in the Ephesian church.
- 24:33Paul was imparting his experience and knowledge to the
- 24:37next generation. Timothy was receptive to
- 24:41learning and gleaning what he could from Paul's wisdom.
- 24:44This is how it should be in ministry across multiple
- 24:47generations. Those who have lived a little
- 24:50more life should be open to sharing their successes and also
- 24:55things they've learned along the way.
- 24:57That we're not a wind. The younger generations coming
- 25:00up can learn and appreciate much from those ahead of them, and
- 25:04perhaps avoid some of the same pitfalls that their mentors work
- 25:09through mentoring. It's a beautiful relationship
- 25:14when the hearts are in the right place to learn and grow.
- 25:17We trust that you're in a community where this is
- 25:20happening. Older ones providing advice and
- 25:23wisdom, and each side learning and growing from one another.
- 25:28This certainly was the case for Paul and Timothy as they were
- 25:31comrades for the sake of the gospel.
