- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome to the Inside the Birds Pregame Show with
- 0:12Speaker 1: Greg Cosell. I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan and of
- 0:16Speaker 1: course we have Greg Cosell. And it's a playoff edition
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the Inside the Birds Pregame Show as the Eagles
- 0:22Speaker 1: and forty nine Ers will battle it out and an
- 0:25Speaker 1: NFC wild Card game at the link for thirty kickoff
- 0:29Speaker 1: and this should be a good one. Two teams that
- 0:31Speaker 1: are familiar with each other, have played each other in
- 0:34Speaker 1: the playoffs before, and really interesting clash of style, contrast
- 0:40Speaker 1: of style both offensively and defensively. I want to start
- 0:43Speaker 1: off the show. We're gonna get into the injuries because
- 0:45Speaker 1: they factor into this game significantly, but I would like
- 0:50Speaker 1: to start off the show a little differently. I wanted
- 0:52Speaker 1: to ask both of you guys, starting with you, Greg,
- 0:55Speaker 1: when you go into this game, right, I know you
- 0:57Speaker 1: kind of watch tape and then think about the matchups
- 0:59Speaker 1: in this way, what's the biggest question in your mind
- 1:03Speaker 1: that you have about this game?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Twenty four to thirteen Eagle Saquon Barkley, I'm done, See
- 1:07Speaker 2: you guys later. Bye.
- 1:09Speaker 1: That will do it for their.
- 1:14Speaker 3: YEA look at him, you would think it'd be funny
- 1:16Speaker 3: real honestly.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I see how he was dressed, so I kind of
- 1:20Speaker 1: thought there would be a little common anyway.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Always, the final question there you had.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The best thing is, I'm going to edit none of
- 1:30Speaker 1: this out. I'm leaving it all in. Everything you get
- 1:32Speaker 1: a great laugh. So the question is what kind of
- 1:36Speaker 1: question strategically matchup wise, Greg, do you have going in to.
- 1:41Speaker 2: This matchup on either side of the ball, any.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Side, any question you might have. I'm just curious when
- 1:47Speaker 1: you evaluate this, what's the biggest thing on your mind?
- 1:49Speaker 1: The biggest question?
- 1:52Speaker 2: Well, I could answer that many ways.
- 1:55Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:58Speaker 2: One of the things that I really looked at in
- 2:00Speaker 2: this game, particularly coming off the last game at the
- 2:03Speaker 2: Niners played on defense against the Seahawks, is what their
- 2:07Speaker 2: linebacker position is going to be. And I feel like
- 2:10Speaker 2: you can get to the edges on their defense. And
- 2:14Speaker 2: you know, that's something I'm really looking forward to seeing
- 2:16Speaker 2: with the Eagles because when all said and done, the
- 2:19Speaker 2: Eagles are still a running football team and that is
- 2:22Speaker 2: the way they want their offense to start and to
- 2:25Speaker 2: work through the run game. And you know, I just
- 2:30Speaker 2: feel as if in looking at the tape, I mean
- 2:32Speaker 2: it looks like right now, and we'll go into more detail,
- 2:35Speaker 2: it looks like right now that when they're in their nickel,
- 2:39Speaker 2: the forty nine ers, that is, it appears that Eric
- 2:42Speaker 2: Kendricks and Garrett Wallow look like to be their starting
- 2:44Speaker 2: linebackers and their nickel. And you know, again, Kendricks has
- 2:49Speaker 2: been a good player in the league for a long time,
- 2:51Speaker 2: but you know, he's thirty three or thirty four. Wallow
- 2:54Speaker 2: is I remember actually doing Wallow coming out of college,
- 2:57Speaker 2: but you know, he's not a starting linebacker in the league.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And I just don't see a lot of range and mobility.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And I'm just feeling as if the Eagles can can
- 3:06Speaker 2: work to the perimeter effectively in this game. So that's
- 3:09Speaker 2: one thing. As we continue talking, they'll they'll certainly be others.
- 3:13Speaker 2: But I don't want to just talk for the next
- 3:14Speaker 2: ten I like it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I will say, just before I get to Adam's question,
- 3:18Speaker 1: my own personal because we've talked about this during the week,
- 3:21Speaker 1: the whole injury situation at linebacker and what the Niners
- 3:24Speaker 1: are going to be. I'm sort of fatigued of waiting
- 3:27Speaker 1: for the Eagles to take advantage of a team that
- 3:30Speaker 1: Bills were down three defensive tackles. The Eagles couldn't run
- 3:33Speaker 1: against them. The Bears were missing t J. Edwards and
- 3:35Speaker 1: Tremaine Edmunds. Right, the Eagles couldn't run against them. So like,
- 3:38Speaker 1: I see this and I'm just you know, I'll see
- 3:41Speaker 1: I'll believe it when I see it.
- 3:42Speaker 2: No, and I'm with you, but but I think I
- 3:44Speaker 2: guess My point is that's the way I think they
- 3:47Speaker 2: need to play, and that's the the way I think
- 3:49Speaker 2: they want to play.
- 3:50Speaker 1: On Adam, what is your biggest match up Rtion going
- 3:54Speaker 1: into this?
- 3:57Speaker 4: My biggest matchup question is what would be Can they
- 4:00Speaker 4: take advantage of the Niners being down four linebackers?
- 4:04Speaker 3: Okay?
- 4:04Speaker 4: Also, oh, here's another one which we can't we can't
- 4:09Speaker 4: not talk about this if you comparatively, if you look
- 4:12Speaker 4: at Week one right when the Niners one at Seattle,
- 4:16Speaker 4: to listen to the talent level of this defense. Nick Posa,
- 4:21Speaker 4: mikel Williams, Fred Warner. Okay, those guys are done for
- 4:26Speaker 4: the season. The two tackles are still there, Elliott and Davis.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Davis is a minor injury knee Tretam totally expected to play.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Dee Winners now has an Echolangy doesn't look good for him,
- 4:36Speaker 4: so that's another starter, right, Both starting safeties have been replaced.
- 4:41Speaker 4: I mean, you're talking down six starters, Jeff from week
- 4:44Speaker 4: one now on your point, and it's fair Ken Kevin
- 4:48Speaker 4: Patula in particular, and with all of his coaches giving
- 4:51Speaker 4: him you know they every coach. The way it works
- 4:53Speaker 4: is they have their game plan for the game and
- 4:55Speaker 4: then you slim it down. You'll let you take it.
- 4:57Speaker 4: You see what you like, and you go from there.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Can they at on your point, take finally take advantage
- 5:02Speaker 4: of it? We all see it the same way. Yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 4: there's certain advantages here that they're going to have. And
- 5:07Speaker 4: I also like, Okay, here's another thing. I like a
- 5:09Speaker 4: lot that they got the offensive lineman off their feet. Okay,
- 5:13Speaker 4: let's hope they're fresher. I understand they're not even remotely
- 5:16Speaker 4: close as good as last season, but that decision to
- 5:19Speaker 4: wrest them, Jeff, as they send it back to you,
- 5:21Speaker 4: let's hope that's meaningful.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Listen, there is no doubt you guys are hitting
- 5:25Speaker 1: it on the head. There's no doubt. A huge question
- 5:27Speaker 1: going into this game is the forty nine ers are hurting?
- 5:30Speaker 1: Can the Eagles just hit them where it hurts, because
- 5:33Speaker 1: at times they do and at times they don't. And
- 5:35Speaker 1: that is absolutely a matchup that they should be able
- 5:38Speaker 1: to capitalize on. But we all wonder, well will they
- 5:41Speaker 1: because they've had their own struggles.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Can I throw one other thing out, Jeff, just before
- 5:45Speaker 2: we let me.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Just give mine because it might be what you were thinking,
- 5:48Speaker 1: and if not, you add yours. No, No, my biggest
- 5:51Speaker 1: one is sort of the opposite, And it's just a question.
- 5:53Speaker 1: This is what I wonder. The sy Francisco forty nine
- 5:56Speaker 1: ers play more twenty one and twenty two personnel than
- 6:00Speaker 1: anybody in the league. It is their base offense, probably
- 6:02Speaker 1: half their all time that they're on the field. They're
- 6:04Speaker 1: gonna have U search the full back out there, two
- 6:07Speaker 1: tight ends perhaps, and ordinarily when a team does that,
- 6:10Speaker 1: a defense plays bass. And I noticed that in Week
- 6:14Speaker 1: eighteen the Seahawks played nothing but nickel. They responded to
- 6:18Speaker 1: this in nothing but nickel and really gave the Seahawks
- 6:20Speaker 1: a lot of problems. Vic Fangio typically plays base defense
- 6:25Speaker 1: against those kind of heavy formations on offense. I wonder
- 6:29Speaker 1: if he will look at what happened in Week eighteen
- 6:32Speaker 1: and think he is a predominantly nickel defensive coordinator this
- 6:36Speaker 1: year in last year, that is where they do their
- 6:38Speaker 1: best work. Will he go nickel against the forty nine
- 6:42Speaker 1: ers offense or will he go more bass against them
- 6:45Speaker 1: and move de Gene back outside instead of playing him
- 6:49Speaker 1: in the slot. I think that's a I think that
- 6:51Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan would love him to play bass, right, but
- 6:56Speaker 1: I think Vic might actually want to play more nickel.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Greg thoughts a legit question. I mean, obviously the Seahawks
- 7:03Speaker 2: are different because emin Warri, that's the way they played
- 7:05Speaker 2: all year. So that wasn't a stretch for the Seahawks
- 7:09Speaker 2: to play nickel. That's basically their base defense, right. It
- 7:13Speaker 2: is not necessarily the Eagles base defense.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:17Speaker 2: So because us check they played out of twenty one
- 7:20Speaker 2: personnel thirty six percent of their snaps this year. Used
- 7:22Speaker 2: check is clearly a foundational piece to everything they do
- 7:26Speaker 2: in normal down in distance situations. So that that's a
- 7:30Speaker 2: great question, which relates to the thing that I was
- 7:33Speaker 2: going to say, which you probably knew it. It's a
- 7:36Speaker 2: mind meld, you know, you probably you probably knew that
- 7:38Speaker 2: I was going to say this. You know, it also
- 7:41Speaker 2: relates to the fact that with rookie Pearsall, who I
- 7:44Speaker 2: don't believe practiced again today and is not looking good
- 7:46Speaker 2: for this game. Adam could probably address that more, but
- 7:49Speaker 2: I don't believe he practiced again as we speak on
- 7:52Speaker 2: a Friday.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Correct.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Then the question is they don't really have a wide
- 8:00Speaker 2: receiver that can win one on one, and at some
- 8:04Speaker 2: point that hurts your offense. Now we know Shanahan is phenomenal,
- 8:08Speaker 2: and obviously they've played a good part of the season
- 8:10Speaker 2: without rookie Piersoll, and they've had games where they've scored
- 8:13Speaker 2: a lot of points without him. But obviously the Eagles
- 8:15Speaker 2: defense is at the top of the league over the
- 8:18Speaker 2: last eight or nine weeks. They're playing a really really
- 8:21Speaker 2: good defense. Look what happened last week without rookie Piersoll
- 8:24Speaker 2: against a very good Seattle defense. You know, they just
- 8:27Speaker 2: don't have, you know, other than Kittle, and he's not
- 8:29Speaker 2: a wide out, but obviously Kittle is a really good player.
- 8:32Speaker 2: But other than Kittle, they don't really have They don't
- 8:35Speaker 2: have a receiver that can win one on one. And
- 8:38Speaker 2: it just and that gets into which we'll get into
- 8:41Speaker 2: as we talk further about the specific unit matchups. About
- 8:44Speaker 2: how the Eagles play defense.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Absolutely, And did you have another matchup that you.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Said, you know, that was it? That was it.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I had a feeling we had, like, you know, shared
- 8:53Speaker 1: brain on that one.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 1: No, I think it's it's fascinating. I think it matters too, guys,
- 8:58Speaker 1: because if Vick is go to play more bass than
- 9:01Speaker 1: he's gonna take it Dori Jackson off the field, He's
- 9:03Speaker 1: gonna have no slot corner. Obviously, it's gonna move Cooper
- 9:06Speaker 1: to Gen outside. Some might think that's beneficial, but then
- 9:09Speaker 1: he's also going to play a five man front, right,
- 9:11Speaker 1: and that's gonna have Jordan Davis and Jayleen Carter and
- 9:14Speaker 1: Morojomo out there. But obviously if he's gonna if he's
- 9:19Speaker 1: gonna play that way, the forty nine Ers might be
- 9:22Speaker 1: able to expose the middle of the field a little
- 9:24Speaker 1: bit more with Cooper de Gen on the outside, and
- 9:27Speaker 1: that's what they like to do.
- 9:28Speaker 2: They like the quicker side about specific matchups because I
- 9:33Speaker 2: think where the Eagles have a definite advantage in this
- 9:35Speaker 2: game is in the interior their defensive tackles versus the
- 9:39Speaker 2: interior of the forty nine ers all line. I think
- 9:42Speaker 2: that's where they would have an advantage as well.
- 9:44Speaker 4: And Jeff, remember Ben Bartch was a starter for them.
- 9:46Speaker 4: He has a list Frank fracture, so he's out till
- 9:49Speaker 4: the summer. Other than Trent Williams, and I know that
- 9:53Speaker 4: they're very well coached. I think it's John Benton, if
- 9:56Speaker 4: I'm not mistaken. I think he's still out there.
- 9:58Speaker 3: You online coach for the Niners as he's still out there.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Chris Foster Foster, Chris Forster from the the U Foster, Yeah,
- 10:05Speaker 4: used to be with Miami.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I'm sorry Benton was there before, but he's coach.
- 10:09Speaker 4: They're well schemed. They kind of play better than probably
- 10:11Speaker 4: their talent would suggest. But I uh, I think Jeff
- 10:15Speaker 4: I kind of clued you in on this. I talked
- 10:16Speaker 4: to a NFC assistant coach who said, with the Eagles defense,
- 10:21Speaker 4: Vic every game. Greg may not even know this because
- 10:25Speaker 4: they don't look at it the same way Greg might
- 10:27Speaker 4: look at it. VIC has something different for you every week.
- 10:31Speaker 4: It made like they ran a little bit of six
- 10:33Speaker 4: to one at some point. I don't know how many
- 10:34Speaker 4: times they've run it, but he gives you something that
- 10:37Speaker 4: you feel like you have to train for, like you
- 10:40Speaker 4: watch like, let's say you've only run five times, but
- 10:42Speaker 4: he makes you look for it because he tries to
- 10:45Speaker 4: give you something small that you haven't practiced for. You know,
- 10:50Speaker 4: we remember when I mean, we can go back to
- 10:52Speaker 4: Week two last year when Vic dropped on down for
- 10:55Speaker 4: the first time and Clint Kobiak was.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Like, uh oh, we didn't see this before. Yeah, that's
- 11:00Speaker 3: a great compliment. It was a great compliment.
- 11:02Speaker 2: You're dealing with two coaches, and it's funny you mentioned that.
- 11:05Speaker 2: That's another great point.
- 11:06Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I love these conversations because I hope people understand this
- 11:09Speaker 2: is all off the cuff.
- 11:09Speaker 3: We don't play with it.
- 11:10Speaker 2: So when you guys say something, it clicks in my brain.
- 11:14Speaker 2: One of the main things that happens, particularly against really
- 11:17Speaker 2: good coaches, whether it's Vic showing something or Shanahan showing something,
- 11:22Speaker 2: is the term that coaches use, and it's critical in
- 11:25Speaker 2: the playoffs is unscouted looks. Yes, so a big thing
- 11:30Speaker 2: in these games. You're and that when you just spoke
- 11:33Speaker 2: at him, it made me think of that Vick will
- 11:34Speaker 2: show an unscouted look, Shanahan will show some unscauted looks.
- 11:38Speaker 2: That becomes a big deal.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Now you're not doing that on fifty percent of your snaps, yeah, obviously,
- 11:42Speaker 5: but you're doing it just enough that you know, you
- 11:45Speaker 5: show something where you know, maybe if Shanahan shows Vic something,
- 11:49Speaker 5: you know, the defense just reacts to half a beat
- 11:51Speaker 5: slow and you end up with a twenty five yard game.
- 11:53Speaker 2: You know that those are the kinds of things you're
- 11:56Speaker 2: looking for.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Unscouted looks, absolutely good stuff, good matchups. We'll get into more. Obviously,
- 12:01Speaker 1: the injuries are going to play a huge part in
- 12:03Speaker 1: this game now, generally for the Eagles. So it was
- 12:06Speaker 1: a very encouraging week. By Friday, they had everybody on
- 12:10Speaker 1: the fifty three man roster participating in practice in some capacity,
- 12:15Speaker 1: so that was good. Brett Toath had the concussion out there,
- 12:19Speaker 1: Lane Johnson was out there all three days, so that's good. However,
- 12:23Speaker 1: the one thing that Adam and I have discussed and
- 12:26Speaker 1: Greg with Lane Johnson, he was limited all three days
- 12:31Speaker 1: of practice, which means they did not feel comfortable putting
- 12:34Speaker 1: him out there team drills, you know, the real football
- 12:39Speaker 1: practice was not what they wanted from Lane Johnson, and
- 12:44Speaker 1: to me, that signals a little bit of concern. I
- 12:46Speaker 1: expect him to play. I just wonder if they were
- 12:49Speaker 1: concerned about exposing him to practice, how could we not
- 12:53Speaker 1: be concerned about him not making it through the game
- 12:55Speaker 1: or really not you know, when you have to actually
- 12:57Speaker 1: play real football for the first two months. Was your
- 13:01Speaker 1: your your right foot going to respond to that? Adam,
- 13:03Speaker 1: I know you have the same.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the same when we had.
- 13:09Speaker 4: When we had Aaron borgwan On, the former Egos assistant
- 13:12Speaker 4: UH trainer athletic trainer. He made it clear that try
- 13:16Speaker 4: to come back from this injury within six weeks. Its
- 13:19Speaker 4: actually a little bit less than eight weeks.
- 13:23Speaker 3: It would be hard.
- 13:23Speaker 4: First he probably thought we would have to have a
- 13:24Speaker 4: different cleat and the He explained that the heavier or
- 13:28Speaker 4: the bigger or the harder it is to play with
- 13:30Speaker 4: the spring. It's not a fractured sprain, but it's the
- 13:32Speaker 4: midfoot and because you're putting more pressure on your foot,
- 13:35Speaker 4: your weight, you're so big and he's obviously six foot seven. Yep,
- 13:39Speaker 4: we're close to it. It's going to be very difficult.
- 13:41Speaker 4: So yeah, he didn't take all the ones this week. Lane,
- 13:43Speaker 4: he did not That.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Midop is the.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Midfoot of his right foot. It's going to be hard.
- 13:51Speaker 4: And Aaron also explained how to to try to anchor
- 13:54Speaker 4: on that foot.
- 13:55Speaker 3: It's going to be very difficult. He said it.
- 13:57Speaker 4: He said, it's funny everything he said seven weeks Aaron
- 14:00Speaker 4: On it's all how true.
- 14:01Speaker 3: It's gonna be hard.
- 14:02Speaker 2: And here we are now because he'll probably give it
- 14:04Speaker 2: a go and then.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sure he'll try to warm up. But yep,
- 14:07Speaker 3: it's gonna be hard.
- 14:08Speaker 4: And we know it's Fred Johnson's backup who's been an
- 14:11Speaker 4: you know, not great, but he's a quality backup. But
- 14:14Speaker 4: the record is well out of five hundred without Lane
- 14:17Speaker 4: and by the way, Trent. Without Trent Williams, they're three
- 14:19Speaker 4: and fourteen the Niners.
- 14:21Speaker 3: It's not good.
- 14:21Speaker 4: We talk about without two Hall of Fame offensive lineman.
- 14:24Speaker 4: So we'll see what happens after pre good warm ups to.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Go through everybody else. Calcata, who looked like that was
- 14:29Speaker 1: a tough injury. It was a good sign that was
- 14:32Speaker 1: just ankle and not knee. Throughout the week. He was
- 14:34Speaker 1: a full participant on Friday, so he's good to go.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Jayal and Carter with the hip, full participant in n
- 14:40Speaker 1: Kobe Dean with the hamstring. All these guys are gonna
- 14:44Speaker 1: gonna play landon Dickerson. I know people get concerned because
- 14:47Speaker 1: he They have this habit now where he practices Wednesday,
- 14:50Speaker 1: either full or limited, and then Thursday they rest him,
- 14:53Speaker 1: which is different. Usually they rest a guy on Wednesday,
- 14:55Speaker 1: but they've been resting Landed on Thursday. He was back
- 14:59Speaker 1: at it Friday EPs back from the concussion. Got it
- 15:02Speaker 1: with the knee is fine. Oja Lari was a full participant.
- 15:07Speaker 1: He was put into the practice wind. I mean, you
- 15:09Speaker 1: never know, you know, if you get injured, it's not
- 15:11Speaker 1: obviously not going to play this weekend. But yeah, you know,
- 15:14Speaker 1: you hope that you're you stay healthy at edge, but
- 15:15Speaker 1: if you don't, you lose a couple of guys.
- 15:17Speaker 4: You may That's why, because you get if Eagles are
- 15:20Speaker 4: able to make a run and they lose one edge
- 15:22Speaker 4: rusher or one guy can't play for a given week,
- 15:25Speaker 4: he could dresses the fourth.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Guy though, joshushe can do that.
- 15:28Speaker 4: But yeah, look, uh, it's it seems so long since
- 15:31Speaker 4: I think Ojlari has been out for over two months,
- 15:33Speaker 4: but uh, Jalen Phillis, by the way, the ankle's fine.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Brett Toaf has not been cleared completely out of concussion protocol,
- 15:41Speaker 4: though Epps has been cleared out of the protocol. So
- 15:43Speaker 4: the two guys and Brett, Yeah, the two guys that
- 15:47Speaker 4: you're concerned about for Sunday would be Lane Johnson and
- 15:51Speaker 4: Brett Toave. Brett Toath is important because he backs up
- 15:54Speaker 4: center and guard, so that that you want to have
- 15:57Speaker 4: him because they you and I have talked about this lately, Jeff.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Their death is not very good on the offensive line.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it is not. And so you're hoping. Listen,
- 16:05Speaker 1: this is this is about the journey too. It's not
- 16:07Speaker 1: just about winning one game. You got to get through
- 16:09Speaker 1: the first game. But this line has been beat up,
- 16:12Speaker 1: and at least you hope they make it through with
- 16:14Speaker 1: a win and that nobody else gets hurt on the
- 16:17Speaker 1: offensive line because they are thin. Let's flip it over
- 16:19Speaker 1: to the Niners, Adam. I want you to, you know,
- 16:21Speaker 1: talk about what you know.
- 16:22Speaker 3: I mean.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Obviously, we saw that Trent Williams was able to get
- 16:25Speaker 1: onto the practice field for the forty nine ers. He's
- 16:27Speaker 1: dealing with that a hamstring injury. Ricky Pierce all at
- 16:31Speaker 1: least for the first two days, wasn't out. I don't
- 16:32Speaker 1: think he was out there at all.
- 16:34Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 16:34Speaker 4: I didn't get the I didn't get the picture that
- 16:36Speaker 4: there was any optimist, I should say, any very I thought,
- 16:39Speaker 4: based on what I'd been told by League sours, not
- 16:43Speaker 4: a lot of optimism he'd be able to play. And
- 16:44Speaker 4: even if he did, with his PCLS brain. I remember
- 16:47Speaker 4: in Nateerlisson, you know he's now working television. We had
- 16:50Speaker 4: Nate on on NFL radio. He said it was by
- 16:53Speaker 4: far the worst injury he's ever had. The poster appreciate
- 16:55Speaker 4: ligament sprain. Yeah, this is a you got a run man,
- 16:58Speaker 4: you got to be able to stop and start and explode,
- 17:01Speaker 4: and he couldn't do it. He's the worst injury he
- 17:03Speaker 4: had at that point when we had him on this
- 17:04Speaker 4: many years ago. So yeah, Greg, Greg could get into
- 17:07Speaker 4: kind of what it looks like. They watch for Jacob Cowing,
- 17:11Speaker 4: who's a slot receiver. They like him. He started working
- 17:15Speaker 4: his way back. He's been out for a while and
- 17:16Speaker 4: injury reserve. But so really right now that one for
- 17:21Speaker 4: them would obviously Trent Williams. It's not so much whether
- 17:23Speaker 4: he could play. It's Kenny Last and Greg, I throw
- 17:27Speaker 4: it back to you, Austin Pleasants is a true young journeyman.
- 17:31Speaker 4: What kind of players this guy he's from what you've seen.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, obviously you're somewhat limited in certain kinds
- 17:37Speaker 2: of runs because she's Trent Williams. Just with the mobility
- 17:41Speaker 2: factor gives you so much and therefore it increases the
- 17:44Speaker 2: options in your run game concepts. You know, Pleasance has
- 17:47Speaker 2: actually been okay, it's not as if he's been a
- 17:49Speaker 2: liability where oh my god, this guy's not blocking anybody,
- 17:53Speaker 2: but he certainly can't get out on the edge. You
- 17:55Speaker 2: can't run certain runs with him that you can run
- 17:57Speaker 2: with Trent Williams. So it does them at what they
- 18:00Speaker 2: can do.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Greg.
- 18:02Speaker 1: It amazes me when I every time I see it,
- 18:04Speaker 1: because the guy is out there catching passes. It amazes me.
- 18:07Speaker 1: DeMarcus Robinson is still playing for winning teams that are
- 18:11Speaker 1: going for number one. I mean, this guy has been
- 18:15Speaker 1: one of these role players who's always had to like
- 18:17Speaker 1: step in for injuries and kinda has gotten the job.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Whether it was with the Chiefs.
- 18:20Speaker 2: He always funny.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:22Speaker 2: I don't know how long he's been in the league now, Jeff,
- 18:24Speaker 2: but I remember when Okay, I remember when he came out.
- 18:31Speaker 2: No problem, I'm doing a yeah, we'll get me that
- 18:38Speaker 2: that was the CEO. Sorry, but Barbark the year he
- 18:46Speaker 2: came out twenty sixteen, he came out of Florida, and
- 18:49Speaker 2: I remember he had some issue off the field issues.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I'm sure you guys remember that. I thought that year
- 18:55Speaker 2: he was a top five wide receiver in the draft class,
- 18:58Speaker 2: but he wasn't drafted that way because he had off
- 19:00Speaker 2: the field issues. And of course he's never truly been
- 19:03Speaker 2: a you know, that kind of receiver in the league.
- 19:05Speaker 2: But jee, if you make a great point, everywhere he's been,
- 19:08Speaker 2: he's a contributor. Now he's not truly a number two
- 19:11Speaker 2: who knows, you know, everybody wants to categorize guys who
- 19:14Speaker 2: knows however you want to categorize them. But wherever he's been,
- 19:17Speaker 2: he contributes. Yeah, you know, I mean I remember he's
- 19:20Speaker 2: a fun years in Kansas City and he caught touchdowns.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I mean, he just seems like he has value to
- 19:26Speaker 2: whatever team he's on.
- 19:28Speaker 1: A Super Bowl with the Rams, by the way that
- 19:30Speaker 1: y're the well.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Not only the speak of the Rams, not only.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Was he good for the Rams, they took him off
- 19:34Speaker 4: special teams and he's signed a contract he was so good.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Yeah, so good. It was like where did this contact?
- 19:40Speaker 4: If Jeff might run for fantasy, people go down their
- 19:43Speaker 4: minds because see like four or five weeks in a row,
- 19:44Speaker 4: You're like, oh my, where does this come from? Because
- 19:46Speaker 4: he can run back then now that he's been in
- 19:48Speaker 4: the league a long time.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Also, by the way, savvy guy, he's just he's a
- 19:51Speaker 2: good player, but he's not he's not a speed guy.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I mean, you know. And and when I say they
- 19:56Speaker 2: don't have guys who can win one on one, that
- 19:58Speaker 2: doesn't mean that no one can ever win one on one.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Obviously it's the NFL. But they don't have that one
- 20:02Speaker 2: guy that you feel like, okay, you know, we can
- 20:05Speaker 2: line him up and he's a match up player if
- 20:07Speaker 2: need be right.
- 20:08Speaker 4: One thing on Austin Pleasants. In five years, he's been
- 20:11Speaker 4: on seven teams, just to give a count. He's a
- 20:14Speaker 4: true young journeyman. He's twenty eight years old. He's undrafted
- 20:16Speaker 4: side by Jacksonville in twenty twenty.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And he's who would play left tackle if Williams.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Number sixty three in your program.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Yeah, well, we already talked about the linebacker situation. It's
- 20:26Speaker 1: pretty well known now Curtis Robinson is a fill in
- 20:30Speaker 1: if obviously that that's what it comes through him and Kendricks.
- 20:33Speaker 1: But Greg, do you the Niners play more big nickel
- 20:37Speaker 1: to compensate like it doesn't mean Now.
- 20:39Speaker 2: It's funny. Robinson was a healthy scratch last week after
- 20:42Speaker 2: playing more than forty snaps for four consecutive games, so
- 20:46Speaker 2: you know, obviously they felt that he was not the guy.
- 20:50Speaker 2: So but he I'm sure he'll be up this week
- 20:52Speaker 2: just because they need bodies. But yes, they do play
- 20:56Speaker 2: big nickel, and they will play big nickel, and that's
- 20:59Speaker 2: Pinnick is the third safety because it's Mustapha and Brown
- 21:02Speaker 2: are the starting safeties. And I think actually those guys
- 21:04Speaker 2: have played well. Yeah, and they're very good playing downhill
- 21:07Speaker 2: on the run game. Yeah, that's the strength of both players.
- 21:10Speaker 2: But Pinnock, when they do play Pinnock and they do
- 21:14Speaker 2: play big nickel, I would say ninety five percent of
- 21:17Speaker 2: the time he lines up essentially as a second level player,
- 21:20Speaker 2: and that mustaf and Brown are our third level players.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Jeff, And well, it's funny how things again, how they've
- 21:26Speaker 4: had six they there since week one, they have had
- 21:28Speaker 4: a minimum of six defensive starter changes Pinnock started with
- 21:33Speaker 4: Siegel sigl e. I think that's how you pronounce it.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Now they're both back on. Pinnock plays more now because
- 21:39Speaker 4: he's they play big nickel. But this is it's hard.
- 21:41Speaker 4: I give Robert Salad credit. I know that their sack
- 21:43Speaker 4: totals are bad, press rates not very good.
- 21:46Speaker 3: They're fairly disciplined. Okay, you got to earn your yards here.
- 21:50Speaker 4: You could say all you want, and I know you
- 21:52Speaker 4: outlined how many times Eagles haven't taken advantage of it.
- 21:55Speaker 3: But it's very well coached.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Greg could get into other stuff with this defense, but
- 22:00Speaker 4: you're gonna They're gonna have to earn it this week.
- 22:02Speaker 1: The question I mean there if Robert Salah isn't at
- 22:05Speaker 1: least a finalist for the Assistant Coach of the Year award,
- 22:08Speaker 1: then yeah, there should be an investigation. Although there's been.
- 22:10Speaker 1: There are a lot of good coaches assistants this year
- 22:13Speaker 1: have been up for it, but he certainly.
- 22:15Speaker 2: And what they do on the back end is it
- 22:17Speaker 2: function very much of whether they're playing big nickel or
- 22:20Speaker 2: playing at base four three. And again the base four
- 22:23Speaker 2: to three could be dependent on who's available. But when
- 22:26Speaker 2: they played big nickel, they tend to play out of
- 22:29Speaker 2: a two high structure, and when they play four to three,
- 22:31Speaker 2: they'll play much more out of a single high structure.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Interesting. Yeah, I think that's why, and this is just
- 22:38Speaker 1: my belief. You guys can certainly disagree, but I would
- 22:41Speaker 1: say from an injury front, if I were the Niners,
- 22:44Speaker 1: I feel like the Trent Williams situation to me is
- 22:47Speaker 1: far more concerning if he can't play in the linebacker situation,
- 22:52Speaker 1: because they've all they've as Greg mentioned, they've tackled well,
- 22:55Speaker 1: they've gotten good play out of their big nickel, and
- 22:58Speaker 1: the Eagles just haven't run the ball well enough for
- 23:00Speaker 1: me to think that they are just going to go
- 23:02Speaker 1: off for two hundred and fifty yards. Could have happened, sure,
- 23:04Speaker 1: But if I were the Niners, I'd be more concerned
- 23:06Speaker 1: about Trent Williams because I feel like they're a different
- 23:09Speaker 1: offense Greg, when they don't have him, and they are
- 23:12Speaker 1: there a much better offense. I know you said Pleasants
- 23:14Speaker 1: has played well, but they are to me a much
- 23:16Speaker 1: better offense now.
- 23:17Speaker 2: I mean, the guy's the first ballot Hall of Famer,
- 23:19Speaker 2: he's he's I don't think you'd be wrong to say
- 23:24Speaker 2: that as you go through the history of left tackles
- 23:26Speaker 2: in in the league. Oh, you know, I'm going through
- 23:28Speaker 2: the you know, let's say, going back, I'm trying to think,
- 23:31Speaker 2: let's say, start with Anthony Munios around nineteen eighty give
- 23:33Speaker 2: or take. At the starting point, I would I would
- 23:36Speaker 2: say Trent Williams is in the top six or seven.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I mean, you've got the obvious, you know, the Munio's,
- 23:41Speaker 2: the the Walter Jones, the Ogdens. I know I'm missing some,
- 23:46Speaker 2: you know, one or two. But yeah, yeah, Joe Thomas.
- 23:50Speaker 2: But I mean Trent Williams is in that conversation.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Yeah one. So if you give him good rep Jason Peter,
- 23:58Speaker 1: there is good latown Jason Pierre, good one.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm talking about left tackles though.
- 24:02Speaker 1: All right, just left tackles, good point, good point, Yep,
- 24:05Speaker 1: all right. I want to ask you this, Greg, then
- 24:08Speaker 1: Adam probably has some stuff for you. They were the
- 24:12Speaker 1: Niners did very well, right, considerably well when Mac Jones
- 24:15Speaker 1: had to start eight games. I believe it was for
- 24:17Speaker 1: Rock Purty. When Perty came back, they went to another level.
- 24:21Speaker 3: What is it.
- 24:22Speaker 1: About what brock Party does for this offense that they
- 24:25Speaker 1: averaged thirty one points since he's per game since he
- 24:28Speaker 1: came back.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a hard question to answer because you know,
- 24:32Speaker 2: I think that will perty give you a couple of
- 24:35Speaker 2: things that I think go beyond Jones. Keep in mind,
- 24:38Speaker 2: it's a very highly choreographed offense. It's a pure progression
- 24:42Speaker 2: based offense. But the quarterback has to have an understanding
- 24:46Speaker 2: of defense, you know, the old abstract pure progression. Those
- 24:51Speaker 2: days are gone because defenses are so much more multiple
- 24:55Speaker 2: and diverse, and there's too much late rotation and changing
- 24:59Speaker 2: looks pre snapped post nap for just pure pure progression,
- 25:04Speaker 2: you know, to be the way you play where you
- 25:05Speaker 2: have no idea what the defense is doing and it
- 25:07Speaker 2: doesn't matter. Purdy is a master at innately understanding late rotation.
- 25:17Speaker 2: He just sees it really, really well. It's something you
- 25:20Speaker 2: didn't really know about him coming out of college because
- 25:22Speaker 2: the college game doesn't demand very much that quarterbacks do that.
- 25:26Speaker 2: There's a few college coaches, obviously, maybe the Kirby Smarts
- 25:29Speaker 2: and others who I don't study the college coaches like
- 25:31Speaker 2: I know the NFL coaches. You know, you'll see that
- 25:34Speaker 2: somewhat in college, but certainly not like in the NFL
- 25:37Speaker 2: where that's been a major trend in the league the
- 25:39Speaker 2: last couple of years, the changing the picture pre snapped
- 25:42Speaker 2: to post nap and Purdy just has an incredible feel
- 25:45Speaker 2: for that. It's innate. It doesn't impact his timing or anticipation.
- 25:50Speaker 2: And the other thing is is the timing and anticipation.
- 25:53Speaker 2: He's really really high level. But the offense is very
- 25:56Speaker 2: choreographed and everything is tied into your footwork to their routes.
- 26:01Speaker 2: It's uh and and the other part of Purty, which
- 26:04Speaker 2: is better than mac Jones, is just the movement ability.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Perdy can make plays outside of structure, both running and throwing.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Now is he a playmaker in the way you think
- 26:12Speaker 2: of the elite playmakers. No, but he can make plays
- 26:16Speaker 2: outside of structure. He can make second reaction plays. He
- 26:20Speaker 2: can improvise and and run and.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Throw the two things. He's got real quick feet, you know.
- 26:25Speaker 4: When you're I was like, sometimes this surprises me and
- 26:28Speaker 4: Jeff how many times we said it. Sometimes these guys
- 26:31Speaker 4: who scramble eagles, sometimes they don't play their discipline and
- 26:36Speaker 4: guys get loose.
- 26:36Speaker 3: And that's one thing.
- 26:38Speaker 4: As elite as this defense has been, you worry about
- 26:41Speaker 4: what Justin Herbert did to them when he in ten
- 26:43Speaker 4: for sixty three with a broken left hand, and that
- 26:46Speaker 4: that does concern.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Me a little bit. So you got to you just
- 26:51Speaker 3: to me there.
- 26:52Speaker 4: The Eagles have a lot of vantages the third defense
- 26:54Speaker 4: versus the Niners offense. But then you get to Shanahan,
- 26:57Speaker 4: the scheme versus Vic the genius. I love these coach matchups. Yeah,
- 27:01Speaker 4: I talks about coach against coaches. This sleep is going
- 27:04Speaker 4: to be fun. Oh, by the way, weatherwise, it's gonna
- 27:07Speaker 4: be very windy once again.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Well, oh it is, yeah, yeah, I mean obviously a
- 27:12Speaker 1: big advantage will be this is that the Niners have
- 27:14Speaker 1: had trouble running the ball, just like the Eagles. They've
- 27:17Speaker 1: had trouble having a very impactful run game. They'll still
- 27:21Speaker 1: do it, but if they get behind the sticks, and
- 27:24Speaker 1: especially if they don't have Trent Williams, even if they
- 27:26Speaker 1: do guys like Jelex Hunt Jalen Phillips, the stunting that
- 27:30Speaker 1: they do up front the Eagles have done lately. Greg
- 27:32Speaker 1: Eagles have a big advantage if they can keep the
- 27:35Speaker 1: Niners offense just like the Seattle did behind schedule, they'll
- 27:38Speaker 1: just lose their identity like that.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know, it's tunny you mentioned that, because
- 27:43Speaker 2: that was one of the main issues I felt that
- 27:46Speaker 2: watching that game live. Obviously, now that you're getting into
- 27:48Speaker 2: these games and certainly the playoffs, you can watch every
- 27:50Speaker 2: game live, you know. But when I was watching that
- 27:54Speaker 2: Seattle San Francisco game, because that was a night game,
- 27:56Speaker 2: right yes, so I saw it live. There was no
- 27:58Speaker 2: other game going on. When I saw Seattle's opening drive
- 28:01Speaker 2: where they control the ball for what six seven whatever
- 28:05Speaker 2: it was, it was a long amount of time, and
- 28:07Speaker 2: right away I'm thinking to myself, this game is getting
- 28:10Speaker 2: outside of the pace and flow of the way the
- 28:13Speaker 2: Niners need the game to be played, which raises a
- 28:17Speaker 2: fascinating question for this game, and I know we'll get
- 28:21Speaker 2: you know, I love the way we talk because we just,
- 28:23Speaker 2: you know, talk. The Eagles have had the most three
- 28:26Speaker 2: and outs in the NFL. The Eagles and one other team,
- 28:30Speaker 2: the Cleveland Browns, have the most three and outs of
- 28:33Speaker 2: any team in the NFL. And you know, if the
- 28:35Speaker 2: Eagles cannot control the ball at all against the defense
- 28:39Speaker 2: that's obviously not one of the best in the league.
- 28:41Speaker 2: As good as Salah is, and I think everybody knows
- 28:44Speaker 2: he's really good at what he does. But if they
- 28:46Speaker 2: can't control the ball and the Niners are able to
- 28:49Speaker 2: keep getting the ball back, then they can have a
- 28:52Speaker 2: chance to develop their pace and tempo for the game,
- 28:55Speaker 2: even if they're not going to put up thirty, which
- 28:57Speaker 2: they won't against the Eagles at the lank, but still
- 28:59Speaker 2: the game can be at least played more to their
- 29:02Speaker 2: pace in tempo, whereas if the opposing offense starts controlling
- 29:06Speaker 2: the ball and you could almost feel it. Did you
- 29:09Speaker 2: watch the Seattle San Francisco game on.
- 29:11Speaker 1: TV, Jeff, Yes, I felt they almost.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Feel like the Niners could never get into the flow
- 29:15Speaker 2: of the game on offense.
- 29:17Speaker 4: So many three and outs, so many of them, and
- 29:20Speaker 4: they had a big turnover. But boy, I've not seen
- 29:24Speaker 4: them look so apt on offense. It was just kind of, look,
- 29:27Speaker 4: if Seattle's elite defensively, that happens, you know.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Argue the Eagles have played that way over the last six, seven,
- 29:33Speaker 2: eight weeks.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Right, So the one thing that really jumped out of
- 29:37Speaker 1: me of that game, Greg, is that I agree that
- 29:39Speaker 1: I felt that even though the score was close the
- 29:41Speaker 1: entire way that Seattle was just controlling it and the
- 29:46Speaker 1: Niners could not get to where they wanted to be.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I feel like the backbreaking play was actually when San
- 29:53Speaker 1: Francisco had him at third and seventeen, they ran the
- 29:56Speaker 1: ball and they got.
- 29:57Speaker 2: A nineteen hours walker.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Yea, got just deflated everything. I think San Francisco is
- 30:02Speaker 1: hanging on and hanging on and hoping to force a
- 30:04Speaker 1: punt there and then when they couldn't, it just it's
- 30:07Speaker 1: just like the balloon deflated.
- 30:09Speaker 2: No, I agree, I agree, but the Niners look obviously
- 30:12Speaker 2: they had the stretch where they scored a lot of points,
- 30:14Speaker 2: but the Niners also don't have to score thirty five
- 30:17Speaker 2: in order to be controlling the game on offense correct
- 30:20Speaker 2: and they that game, they just it wasn't there and
- 30:24Speaker 2: you could feel it. You know, they're just watching the
- 30:26Speaker 2: game on TV.
- 30:29Speaker 1: The Niners defense, Greg, let's talk about what. Sala is
- 30:32Speaker 1: not high blitz. He's gonna be what.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And they're normally a top down defense. I mean, they'll
- 30:38Speaker 2: play single high, like I said, depending on the personnel
- 30:41Speaker 2: out there, but normally they're not a high percentage pressure defense.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Although depending on games, he will jack up his blitz
- 30:48Speaker 2: frequency in the second half because he feels it's needed.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Depending on a given game, but that's not their their
- 30:54Speaker 2: starting mo and they're not, relative to the rest of
- 30:57Speaker 2: the league a high high percentage cover one team, although
- 31:00Speaker 2: they you know, although they will play cover one, I
- 31:02Speaker 2: mean they're not, you know, they're more I would say foundationally,
- 31:07Speaker 2: they're more zone based than they are man based.
- 31:10Speaker 1: They had they had twenty sacks at him in an
- 31:13Speaker 1: eighteen game season. I believe they have that twenty. Is
- 31:17Speaker 1: that not amazing that they finished with their record to
- 31:20Speaker 1: have twentys?
- 31:21Speaker 4: They played with discipline, but listen, they lost both starting
- 31:26Speaker 4: edges right use Fred Warner. It's not that he's a
- 31:30Speaker 4: sack guy, but when you're down an efficiency and pressure rate,
- 31:35Speaker 4: it is kind of amazing.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Now.
- 31:36Speaker 4: But I don't want to throw the back at Greg.
- 31:38Speaker 4: I know they've talking to the Niners over the years.
- 31:40Speaker 4: They're very proud.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Of Diamadoor Lenore's development.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Yep, if you.
- 31:45Speaker 4: Could give the folks a little bit of an overview
- 31:48Speaker 4: of him and Ernardo Green, what could they expect in
- 31:50Speaker 4: this game?
- 31:51Speaker 2: Well, the really interesting thing about the Niners and the
- 31:53Speaker 2: way they play defense is Ornardo Green went to Florida State,
- 31:56Speaker 2: and Florida State plays heavy, heavy pressed man and I
- 31:59Speaker 2: love Ernardo Green coming out. He was a second round pick,
- 32:02Speaker 2: but I loved him as a press man corner. They
- 32:04Speaker 2: don't play a lot of press man so I think
- 32:07Speaker 2: Lenora and Green are solid players. They're smaller players, you know,
- 32:11Speaker 2: they're not big guys. And the guy who I think
- 32:16Speaker 2: has really been good for them, believe it or not,
- 32:18Speaker 2: has been their slot corner up in Stout. He's had
- 32:21Speaker 2: a really really good season and you know, he's he
- 32:25Speaker 2: is one of those sort of slot corners that's not big,
- 32:29Speaker 2: but he's physical, he's competitive, he's aggressive, he will play
- 32:33Speaker 2: the run. When they do blitz, he'll be part of
- 32:36Speaker 2: a lot of their blitz packages. So he's he's a
- 32:40Speaker 2: really interesting player, spicy. He's smaller though, he's under five
- 32:42Speaker 2: to nine, but he's good. Yeah, yeah, he's small.
- 32:45Speaker 1: The thing that the thing that I really think becomes
- 32:48Speaker 1: good for the Eagles and problematic for the forty nine
- 32:50Speaker 1: ers is this is that the times the passing offense
- 32:54Speaker 1: really goes into droughts, they'll either be that pocket collapse
- 32:59Speaker 1: around Jillen. There is either pressure or the perception of pressure,
- 33:03Speaker 1: and you get him out of his rhythm. And as
- 33:06Speaker 1: good as this forty nine Ers team has been an
- 33:08Speaker 1: overcoming its weaknesses. I just don't know that they can
- 33:12Speaker 1: do enough of that to really make Jalen Hurts uncomfortable.
- 33:16Speaker 1: And Adam, you say, well, I'm getting getting those matchups
- 33:20Speaker 1: on the outside. As good as Lenore has been and
- 33:23Speaker 1: as okay they've been in the secondary, you have to
- 33:25Speaker 1: favor DeVante and aj against.
- 33:28Speaker 4: They've had some teats where they've gotten torched. But we
- 33:30Speaker 4: should make that clear here. I mean, I could not
- 33:32Speaker 4: believe and I happen to watch that game actually more
- 33:36Speaker 4: than a half of when Jacoby Brissette have one of
- 33:38Speaker 4: the best games that no one will ever talk about
- 33:41Speaker 4: in forty seven completions for four hundred and fifty somebody yards. Yeah,
- 33:45Speaker 4: and it's not like, look but I know that the
- 33:47Speaker 4: Niners they like their corners.
- 33:49Speaker 2: But that's great.
- 33:50Speaker 4: But they've had some games to the Chicago game, if
- 33:52Speaker 4: that's some games, Jeff, where they've gotten torched.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Yeah, And the pass rife point, Jeff is a really
- 33:56Speaker 2: good one. I know Keyon White, it has been in
- 33:59Speaker 2: and out of practice, I think this week, but let's
- 34:01Speaker 2: assume he plays. They're predominant third down and pure pass
- 34:05Speaker 2: rush D line front. They have Sammy Oh and Huff
- 34:08Speaker 2: as the edge rushers, and White and Gross Matos inside.
- 34:11Speaker 2: That's basically their pass rush front when they're in you know,
- 34:15Speaker 2: third down and pure pass situations.
- 34:18Speaker 1: I know Greg that they are more about scheme than
- 34:21Speaker 1: any individual because they've lost so many good players. But
- 34:24Speaker 1: if the Niners are going to pull this off and
- 34:26Speaker 1: really hold the Eagles under twenty points and play a
- 34:29Speaker 1: really good defensive game, who's going to be the forced
- 34:31Speaker 1: player for them? Who's gonna, oh, you mean, like, who
- 34:35Speaker 1: is going to be the one that kind of just
- 34:37Speaker 1: causes the havoc that really frustrates the Eagles.
- 34:39Speaker 2: That's a great question, because, look, I don't think you're speaking,
- 34:42Speaker 2: we're speaking at a school to say that they don't
- 34:44Speaker 2: really have that impact player that you feel like as
- 34:48Speaker 2: a game changer. I would almost argue that their two
- 34:51Speaker 2: most impactful players are their two safeties right now, right
- 34:54Speaker 2: Brown and Mustafa.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Mustafa was a fun watch coming out of wake Forest
- 35:00Speaker 2: and Brown. You know Brown, he's a Penn State kid
- 35:01Speaker 2: and he's played really well this year. He's he's finally
- 35:04Speaker 2: come to where I think they expected when they drafted him,
- 35:07Speaker 2: because wasn't he a second round pick Jeff Yeah, he
- 35:10Speaker 2: was yeah, round pick. Yeah, and he was good college player.
- 35:13Speaker 2: I mean, you know, he was a good player. But
- 35:17Speaker 2: you know, when you.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Look around, I'm right third round at him, Okay, but.
- 35:21Speaker 2: When you look at their D line, I mean, you know,
- 35:24Speaker 2: Huff can have his moments as a pass rusher, but
- 35:26Speaker 2: I wouldn't say he's a dominant pass rusher.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Yeah, he had a good start. He fell off the
- 35:30Speaker 1: face of the earth after getting hurt. Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:33Speaker 2: So they just don't really have that guy, you know.
- 35:36Speaker 2: I think that you look at and say, that's a
- 35:38Speaker 2: guy that could really be an impact changing type player.
- 35:42Speaker 1: And that's where I think it's going to be a
- 35:43Speaker 1: struggle for them. I mean, at least when they played
- 35:45Speaker 1: Buffalo and they were missing all those guys, they had
- 35:47Speaker 1: a guy like Epanessa who could cause a little issue.
- 35:49Speaker 1: They had to me they have more. I just again,
- 35:53Speaker 1: I can't discount the job that Roberts Hell has done,
- 35:56Speaker 1: but I this is a different animal. These are the Eagles.
- 35:59Speaker 1: The Eagles can can block it up pretty well, and
- 36:02Speaker 1: then if Jalen Hurts gets into a rhythm, then it
- 36:04Speaker 1: could be lights out pretty quickly. I feel comfortable in
- 36:07Speaker 1: saying if this game winds up being a blowout, it's
- 36:09Speaker 1: more because the Eagles blew out the Niners than vice versah.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Right, right, well, yeah, I mean look in the link
- 36:15Speaker 2: in January. It's you know, teams usually don't come in
- 36:18Speaker 2: and score thirty. You know that normally doesn't happen. Doesn't
- 36:20Speaker 2: mean they're gonna win. We don't know that obviously, but
- 36:23Speaker 2: I mean, you know, if the Niners win, they're not
- 36:26Speaker 2: gonna be winning this game thirty five to seventeen, right, yes, I.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Think more than ever. And I know fans hate this,
- 36:34Speaker 1: and to extent, people who watch the Eagles and cover
- 36:37Speaker 1: them objectively sort of get annoyed with the two. But
- 36:40Speaker 1: this might be the epitome of the nick Sirianni. Just
- 36:44Speaker 1: play smart, fundamental football, not turn it over, and you'll
- 36:49Speaker 1: probably wind up on the winning side because I don't
- 36:51Speaker 1: let anything flukey happen that favors the forty nine ers,
- 36:54Speaker 1: And you're probably pretty good.
- 36:56Speaker 2: It's a great point because can you see the forty
- 36:58Speaker 2: nine ers? And again, you know, we're just talking here
- 37:01Speaker 2: and people probably think we're just you know, three idiots
- 37:03Speaker 2: talking like everybody else. But yeah, yeah, but can you
- 37:07Speaker 2: see the Niners having to, let's say four or five
- 37:11Speaker 2: times in this game, having to drive eighty yards and scoring.
- 37:14Speaker 1: No, not at all. And that's exactly I thought. That
- 37:18Speaker 1: thought You've just had Greg, And that's why I said
- 37:21Speaker 1: the only I don't say the only way, but the
- 37:24Speaker 1: best way for the Niners to get out of there
- 37:26Speaker 1: with the win is if the Eagles really screw something up,
- 37:29Speaker 1: if they turn it over and flip the field and
- 37:31Speaker 1: all of a sudden, the Niners, who I think are
- 37:33Speaker 1: a really good red zone and third down team this.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Year, a terrific third down team.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Yeah, you give them those.
- 37:39Speaker 2: If it's third and nine or ten, I mean, then
- 37:41Speaker 2: it's you know, that's different.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I would agree. I think it's just a real
- 37:45Speaker 1: uphill climb. Yeah, And I'm I'm saying that expecting the
- 37:48Speaker 1: Eagles to struggle a little bit offensively because that's just
- 37:51Speaker 1: who they are.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Well, the main look, one could make the argument as
- 37:56Speaker 2: you really look back and reflect on this Eagle season
- 37:59Speaker 2: is not much was different about the Eagles overall, other
- 38:03Speaker 2: than the fact that I give you guys that stat
- 38:05Speaker 2: earlier in the week. Other than the fact that Barkley
- 38:09Speaker 2: in the third and fourth quarter a year ago twenty
- 38:11Speaker 2: twenty four had three twenty two for seventeen fifty three.
- 38:15Speaker 2: And this year in the third and fourth quarter he's
- 38:18Speaker 2: got one thirty six for five. Oh weight, He've not
- 38:21Speaker 2: been able to run the ball and put the game away.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I mean last year they did that automatically. He had
- 38:27Speaker 2: three hundred and twenty two carries in the second half
- 38:29Speaker 2: last year.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Wow, what did what a difference? What did dichotomy? That's
- 38:34Speaker 1: crazy one year in the next.
- 38:37Speaker 3: Over twelve hundred yards less.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I mean it's crazy, you know. So. But other than that,
- 38:42Speaker 2: you could make the argument that everything else is relatively
- 38:46Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts numbers wise. You know, we can debate Jalen
- 38:49Speaker 2: Hurts all day long. He's played long enough to know
- 38:51Speaker 2: that this is Jalen Hurts. He's a good player. This
- 38:54Speaker 2: is who he is. He's not all of a sudden
- 38:56Speaker 2: going to be a different player tomorrow or next week
- 38:59Speaker 2: or next year. This has played long enough to know
- 39:02Speaker 2: this is who he is.
- 39:03Speaker 3: One thing I do.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Want to add, what's that?
- 39:05Speaker 3: Just finish up? I want to add something within.
- 39:07Speaker 2: The context of the Eagles when they're playing. Well, he's
- 39:10Speaker 2: a really good player. Yeah, but he won't he personally
- 39:14Speaker 2: won't be different.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Correct, all right, so the win, the guts, and the
- 39:18Speaker 4: first half are up to forty miles an hour. That's
- 39:20Speaker 4: actually worse than a lot of their games this year. Hmm, Okay,
- 39:23Speaker 4: we'll see now. You know it could change before the game,
- 39:25Speaker 4: but I'm just letting people know that's on. But the
- 39:28Speaker 4: one another positive for him is this is important. Never
- 39:31Speaker 4: on the injury report this season. With all the contact
- 39:34Speaker 4: that he has he takes. I know he doesn't run
- 39:36Speaker 4: as much, they don't design as many runs, but with
- 39:38Speaker 4: their offensive line protection issues, the line not being as good,
- 39:42Speaker 4: that's really incredible.
- 39:43Speaker 3: That's a credit to him. Not even on these report
- 39:45Speaker 3: once we.
- 39:46Speaker 4: Were already maybe he won't run around it. It was actually
- 39:50Speaker 4: going to the Charger game, I think, yeah, he was okay,
- 39:53Speaker 4: So that's a credit to him.
- 39:54Speaker 6: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 43:19Speaker 1: all right, let's do what we do best. Fellas. We've
- 43:22Speaker 1: talked about the matchups. Here are the key ones, the injuries.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Let's make our predictions in our Player of the game.
- 43:27Speaker 1: I'm gonna start with Greg because he was so eager
- 43:29Speaker 1: he gave it at the top of the show. I
- 43:31Speaker 1: know he's bursting out the seams to give it again.
- 43:34Speaker 2: And I'm gonna stick with that. Twenty four to thirteen Birds,
- 43:36Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley. I think I just feel like this is
- 43:39Speaker 2: the week the run game is going to.
- 43:40Speaker 3: Be a factor.
- 43:41Speaker 2: And again I can't give be a yardage total, but
- 43:43Speaker 2: I just think it's it's going to be that they're
- 43:46Speaker 2: going to be able to sort of control the pacing
- 43:48Speaker 2: tempo of the game with the run game against the
- 43:50Speaker 2: forty nine ers.
- 43:51Speaker 3: What's your score?
- 43:52Speaker 2: Twenty four to thirteen?
- 43:54Speaker 3: Oh, close to mind.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Okay, too many, too many injuries for the Niners, too
- 43:58Speaker 2: many players that just you know, I mean, look, we
- 44:04Speaker 2: know Shanahan's a phenomenal coach, we know Solid has done
- 44:07Speaker 2: an unbelievable job. But I just feel like they're down
- 44:10Speaker 2: too many bodies, yep, And I'm concerned. I'm concerned as
- 44:14Speaker 2: well about their past game as well, schemed and choreographed
- 44:17Speaker 2: as it is. You know, that's one reason. Just to
- 44:20Speaker 2: make a quick point, which you know I mentioned, I
- 44:21Speaker 2: would say earlier that the Eagles can can kind of
- 44:24Speaker 2: control Jackson on the outside because they essentially let Mitchell
- 44:28Speaker 2: at boundary corner play zero man and push everything to
- 44:33Speaker 2: the wide side of the field, so Jackson is not
- 44:36Speaker 2: really playing a lot of pure man coverage on the outside,
- 44:41Speaker 2: even in their zone principles, because you know, they let
- 44:44Speaker 2: they let Mitchell essentially play zero.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Man, right right. That's amazing that he's been able to
- 44:49Speaker 1: do that all year long. Yeah, yeah, and get some
- 44:52Speaker 1: really good wide receivers and flourish. So you're okay. You
- 44:56Speaker 1: said Barkley was your player of the game.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Yes, I did, all right.
- 45:00Speaker 1: I should mention the Eagles are now six point favorites.
- 45:02Speaker 1: For most of the week it was five five and
- 45:04Speaker 1: a half and they're up to six point favorites in
- 45:07Speaker 1: the game. Over under, it's low as you would expect,
- 45:10Speaker 1: forty four and a half. So your prediction, Greg was
- 45:14Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, twenty four. So my quick mats and
- 45:17Speaker 1: under on the forty four and a half, Adam, what
- 45:19Speaker 1: do you got?
- 45:20Speaker 3: All right?
- 45:20Speaker 4: I've got a twenty three seventeen Eagles since Greg took
- 45:25Speaker 4: my guy. Well, here, let's put it this way. I
- 45:28Speaker 4: had a great talk with an offensive coach from an
- 45:31Speaker 4: NFC team, and because his team played the Eagles this
- 45:34Speaker 4: season and he spoke so glogally about jaylex Son, he
- 45:38Speaker 4: was just shocked at how good of a football player is.
- 45:40Speaker 4: He said, the guy's no weakness and he goes, but
- 45:44Speaker 4: he's he's not great, elite at anything.
- 45:46Speaker 3: But he can't believe.
- 45:48Speaker 4: Because I guess whatever cutups they got, they got some
- 45:51Speaker 4: from it's most a year two, but some from last year.
- 45:54Speaker 4: He just shocked at how good he is. And I
- 45:56Speaker 4: believe that Hunk could have a huge game here. I'll
- 46:00Speaker 4: go with Barkley because it starts with him. Obviously, I
- 46:03Speaker 4: expect you to have a great game. They're going to
- 46:04Speaker 4: get up with the second and who knows how well
- 46:06Speaker 4: we'll be able to throw the football this win. That's
- 46:07Speaker 4: also not good for party by the way. So and
- 46:10Speaker 4: we saw what Jared Goff could do in the win,
- 46:12Speaker 4: not very good. So yeah, I like them to win
- 46:15Speaker 4: this game. I'm fascinated to see what the chess match
- 46:19Speaker 4: is going to be with the conditions and how they
- 46:22Speaker 4: call it. We know both teams want to start with
- 46:24Speaker 4: a run. Kyle Shannon talks about his openers right run game.
- 46:28Speaker 4: I love that Kyle's very up from it. If we're Jeff,
- 46:31Speaker 4: we're Sirian. He won't give you anything. Kyle doesn't care
- 46:34Speaker 4: with injuries. Yeah, philosophy. He doesn't really hid a lot.
- 46:39Speaker 3: I love it. And by the way, they're really good.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Well it's funny because he tried to hire Vic Fangio
- 46:44Speaker 1: wants to be his defensive coordinator. Can imagine covering a
- 46:46Speaker 1: team with both Kyle and Vick at the podium every week.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Oh what a treasure that would be.
- 46:53Speaker 3: We love We love that.
- 46:55Speaker 1: All right. I'm gonna stick with my Philly I always
- 46:57Speaker 1: give the same pick here than I do with Philly
- 46:59Speaker 1: Voice when we to our staff picks. By the way,
- 47:01Speaker 1: I'd like to crown myself. I was the top game
- 47:05Speaker 1: Eagles game picker at Philly Voice this year. If here
- 47:08Speaker 1: though no might have been no, it might have been
- 47:11Speaker 1: you Caplin, you're right, But I was twelve and five
- 47:13Speaker 1: picking games. So but anyway, that's not against the spread,
- 47:16Speaker 1: so it's not not very hard. But either way, I
- 47:19Speaker 1: am picking the Eagles in a ten point win. I'm
- 47:22Speaker 1: gonna say twenty three to thirteen was my pick. And
- 47:26Speaker 1: I am going to go with na Kobe Dean as
- 47:29Speaker 1: my player of the game because I do think that
- 47:31Speaker 1: the Niners are going to be in a lot of
- 47:33Speaker 1: second and third and unmanageables. You might see n Kobe Dean,
- 47:36Speaker 1: come on, some sim pressures, get after the quarterback, get
- 47:39Speaker 1: a few sacks, maybe for some fumble. I think he's
- 47:41Speaker 1: going to be a really big part of what the
- 47:43Speaker 1: Eagles do defensively against the Niners on Sunday.
- 47:46Speaker 3: That's going out. Wow, that's a pretty good cup. We'll say, yeah, well.
- 47:49Speaker 1: I like to be different. If I'm going to pick
- 47:51Speaker 1: a defensive oriented game, I want to go with a
- 47:53Speaker 1: defensive player as my MVP, just like you did. So
- 47:57Speaker 1: that is it. The picks are in, the matchups have
- 48:00Speaker 1: been analyzed, and all that's left is for the Eagles
- 48:02Speaker 1: and the Niners to duke it out at the Link
- 48:05Speaker 1: on Sunday. That'll do it for the Inside the Birds
- 48:08Speaker 1: pregame show for Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan. I'm Jeff Mosher.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Thanks for watching on Inside the Birds.
