Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Chris Cahill: Police Association President on tougher penalties for boy racers
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So Mark Mitchell's promising to basically out crush the Crusher
- 0:03Speaker 1: on boy races. If you're caught racing once and convicted,
- 0:06Speaker 1: your car can be crushed or sold rather than the
- 0:09Speaker 1: current three strikes law. Police Association president Chris car Hit
- 0:12Speaker 1: with me this morning. Chris, good morning, Good morning, Ryan,
- 0:15Speaker 1: lots to talk to you about this morning. So the
- 0:17Speaker 1: first of all, Crusher actually only crushed three cars. How
- 0:20Speaker 1: many do you think police might get with these new powers.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Well, the one conviction rather than having to have three
- 0:26Speaker 2: convictions under the current law should make a difference. Look,
- 0:30Speaker 2: we've got to do something. These things are out of
- 0:32Speaker 2: control them. They're not just anti social boy racing. These
- 0:35Speaker 2: things have got to the point where the deliberately antagonizing
- 0:39Speaker 2: police when they turn up, they're getting bottled, they're getting
- 0:41Speaker 2: their cars rammed, and the public has had a goutsful
- 0:44Speaker 2: of it when it's in their neighborhood. So I think
- 0:46Speaker 2: it's where the try.
- 0:47Speaker 1: The firearms registry. So actors are basically doing agree to
- 0:50Speaker 1: disagree over this review. This talk of only saving two
- 0:55Speaker 1: lives a year if we have a firearms registry. Does
- 0:59Speaker 1: that sound worth the expense? I mean, is that what
- 1:01Speaker 1: is that what you are hearing.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Well, it's a ridiculous measure. She asked for this review,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and she doesn't like the results, and now she doesn't
- 1:11Speaker 2: want to listen to it. I mean, two lives. To me,
- 1:13Speaker 2: two lives is worth it. But that was one incident.
- 1:16Speaker 2: She forgets that actually the third life was the offender
- 1:18Speaker 2: who took his own life. What about the two police
- 1:21Speaker 2: officers that were shot at that incident, one suffering life
- 1:24Speaker 2: change and injuries. These are just one incident. I can
- 1:27Speaker 2: give you dozens where that actually take in firearms off
- 1:30Speaker 2: the street because they've been identified through the REGIS chairs
- 1:34Speaker 2: being supplied by licensed firearms owners to criminals. She's just
- 1:39Speaker 2: upset that the results have actually been outstanding. And why
- 1:42Speaker 2: would you do a review after one year when it's
- 1:44Speaker 2: a five year limitation before this is up and running.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It's just crazy that she doesn't like what she's hearing
- 1:50Speaker 2: so she wants to stop it.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it does sound a bit odd to be having
- 1:54Speaker 1: a review, a review of a review which you initiated
- 1:57Speaker 1: to Hey, the five hundred extra cops year basically a
- 2:01Speaker 1: few from what I can gather a few months later
- 2:03Speaker 1: than promised. We did actually know this a little while ago,
- 2:06Speaker 1: but big deal or do you think they are genuinely
- 2:09Speaker 1: trying here?
- 2:10Speaker 2: I like they're definitely trying. They're trying really hard. Look,
- 2:14Speaker 2: we always said it's an arbitrary date that you give.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It's going to be tough. But I think what you
- 2:19Speaker 2: have to look as longer term is this actually going
- 2:22Speaker 2: to be a bigger problem. We know that a struggling
- 2:26Speaker 2: to recruit, but we're also seeing attrition rise. I think
- 2:28Speaker 2: you're going to see longer term some real concerns around
- 2:32Speaker 2: whether police can get enough staff. Auckland is south Is.
- 2:35Speaker 2: You know they've got like ten percent vacancies for constavorary
- 2:39Speaker 2: staff right across Auckland. It's start become a real pressure point.
- 2:42Speaker 2: It's a worldwide problem and I think we might be
- 2:44Speaker 2: seeing it manifest itself in New Zealand.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Now, appreciate your time.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Chris.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Chris Carhill Police Association President, with me this morning.
