- 0:18Speaker 1: Happy Tuesday, everybody. Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:24Speaker 2: After a long holiday weekend, hopefully you enjoyed the extra
- 0:28Speaker 2: day for Labor Day. And we're lucky. Beautiful weather and
- 0:37Speaker 2: incredible weather. Utah, late summer push. These last couple of
- 0:43Speaker 2: weeks of rain, I think, kept us green. I was
- 0:48Speaker 2: up in the mountains this weekend. Nothing's changing. The leaves
- 0:52Speaker 2: aren't changing just yet. Feels like we got a new
- 0:55Speaker 2: lease on summer. And football season is back, all the
- 1:00Speaker 2: way back. Week one treated us to a beautiful reminder
- 1:06Speaker 2: of that college football is the most wonderfully chaotic, nonsensical
- 1:13Speaker 2: mess of competitive glory that you could ever imagine. You
- 1:17Speaker 2: could not have scripted a more out-of-this-world start to the
- 1:23Speaker 2: college football season than what we got over the weekend. Look,
- 1:28Speaker 2: we got a great game from Utah on Thursday night.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Colorado with the.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Field goal block as time expired to win one for
- 1:39Speaker 2: the big 12 over the weekend. You saw BYU look
- 1:44Speaker 2: like we thought BYU was going to look against a
- 1:47Speaker 2: Utah tech team that probably would be better served by
- 1:51Speaker 2: being a junior college. Still no offense to my producer
- 1:57Speaker 2: right now, James Peterson. See what I did there right.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Now, right now. I'm quoting Kyle Whittingham. James is our
- 2:09Speaker 1: producer right now. I mean, it's not infinite. It's not infinite. Oh, man.
- 2:14Speaker 3: And the other thing I loved about his press conference,
- 2:16Speaker 3: that's a deep cut that only Utah fans and maybe
- 2:19Speaker 3: even only people who cover Kyle Whittingham in the media
- 2:24Speaker 3: will really, really picked.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Up on just how quiet he was. Oh, man. Just like, oh, is.
- 2:29Speaker 1: My volume all the way up?
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yep. Kyle Whittingham just... I don't know if it's on purpose.
- 2:34Speaker 3: I don't know if it's just the way he talks.
- 2:36Speaker 3: He just, he's a very quiet talker. Other times he
- 2:40Speaker 3: gets excited. He's loud, but most of the time he's
- 2:42Speaker 3: very quiet.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Coach Whit has a, like a little bit of press
- 2:45Speaker 2: conference voice and modulation where he'll, he'll talk kind of
- 2:49Speaker 2: quiet and you know, it's not as good as you
- 2:51Speaker 2: could get.
- 2:51Speaker 1: And then there's a little bit back more to this
- 2:54Speaker 1: and yeah, well, um, Bryce Underwood.
- 2:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 2: He's our, he's a quarterback right now. It's not infinite.
- 3:00Speaker 2: We need to see him turn a corner. Then you'll
- 3:03Speaker 2: take a breath. And what can I say? You got
- 3:05Speaker 2: to give credit to, and it's just like, you got
- 3:07Speaker 2: to go up and down. It's like when you're watching,
- 3:10Speaker 2: we all know these, when you're watching a movie or
- 3:12Speaker 2: a television show that did not pay the audio mix enough.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Where.
- 3:19Speaker 2: The dialogue is quiet, and then the sound effects and
- 3:22Speaker 2: the music are way too loud. So while you're watching
- 3:25Speaker 2: this movie or watching this show, you have to change
- 3:29Speaker 2: the volume all the time. That's what it's like listening
- 3:31Speaker 2: to Kyle Whittingham at press conferences. And that's fine, because
- 3:34Speaker 2: we don't have to deal with it anymore. The whole
- 3:36Speaker 2: country is dealing with it today, because the biggest story
- 3:39Speaker 2: of the weekend was Western Michigan... beating the university of Michigan,
- 3:45Speaker 2: allegedly dog walking them all up and down the field,
- 3:48Speaker 2: all game long dominating the line of scrimmage.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And then, and then.
- 3:55Speaker 2: One second, one phantom second gets put back on the
- 3:58Speaker 2: clock and Kyle Whittingham's tenure at the university of Michigan.
- 4:04Speaker 2: It's really interesting because I know that there are a
- 4:06Speaker 2: lot of people who are listening to the show right
- 4:08Speaker 2: now who want to root for some kind of a
- 4:11Speaker 2: downfall for Kyle Whittingham.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I don't feel that way. I'm never going to feel
- 4:15Speaker 1: that way. Room on the Buckeyes bandwagon for everybody.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jay Hill.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I want Jay Hill to be successful. I want Jim
- 4:22Speaker 2: Harding to be successful. I want Lewis Powell to be successful.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I want the players that left Utah, even though it's painful.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I want them to go on to great success and
- 4:32Speaker 2: show that. that guys from the big 12, that guys
- 4:35Speaker 2: more importantly from the university of Utah are nationally relevant players.
- 4:39Speaker 3: A lot of these guys played high school in the
- 4:41Speaker 3: state of Utah too. There's, there's something with that too.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Snowden Smith snow and sat next to me at.
- 4:47Speaker 2: The Utah bookstore last year and said, look me in
- 4:50Speaker 2: my face and said, I'm a youth for life. Cause
- 4:52Speaker 2: we were talking about the Keanu town of Austin transfer
- 4:55Speaker 2: and things like that. And he believed that at that moment,
- 4:58Speaker 2: and obviously things have changed. I bear no ill will
- 5:02Speaker 2: to Smith's notice Smith. He looked really, really good in
- 5:05Speaker 2: that game. There were not a lot of people who
- 5:07Speaker 2: looked great in that game, Smith, Snowden, and JJ Buchanan
- 5:14Speaker 2: were Well, JJ Buchanan was the best player on Michigan's
- 5:17Speaker 2: whole football team in that game. And that's a, you
- 5:19Speaker 2: biggest moment of the game. That's a, you that's the
- 5:22Speaker 2: guy that not only did he have a great game,
- 5:23Speaker 2: but he had the biggest moment of the game. He
- 5:25Speaker 2: catches the, the Mulligan hail Mary pass from Bryce Underwood.
- 5:30Speaker 2: After a review of the clock, we watched it and
- 5:34Speaker 2: it looked like it was expired.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And then he came out and he said, no.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And then I, I appreciate the transparency post game from
- 5:41Speaker 2: the big 12 saying, well, no, this is what they're
- 5:42Speaker 2: actually looking at in the replay booth. I put the
- 5:45Speaker 2: poll question out just now that you've seen all the reviews,
- 5:48Speaker 2: you've heard all the points being made on both sides,
- 5:51Speaker 2: Josh Pate and Joel Klatt and everyone like all these,
- 5:54Speaker 2: you know, like, like nationally influential college football conversationalists having
- 6:00Speaker 2: talking with rules officials and Mike Pereira saying like, no,
- 6:04Speaker 2: this is how.
- 6:05Speaker 1: It should have gone. This is what it should have
- 6:06Speaker 1: looked like at the end of the day.
- 6:09Speaker 2: That is the only win that really counts as a
- 6:14Speaker 2: loss for the University of Michigan. Like, it's not going
- 6:18Speaker 2: to count as a loss in the record book. It's
- 6:20Speaker 2: going to feel like one, though. For Bryce Underwood, it's
- 6:23Speaker 2: being treated as a loss. For Kyle Whittingham, it's being
- 6:26Speaker 2: treated as a loss. For the University of Michigan in
- 6:29Speaker 2: the college football playoff conversation, it's being treated as a loss.
- 6:34Speaker 2: It was a loss. Western Michigan deserves an immense amount
- 6:37Speaker 2: of credit for the way they played that game and
- 6:40Speaker 2: maybe even more for the way that they handled the
- 6:42Speaker 2: injustice of how things unfolded. And if there's a change
- 6:46Speaker 2: that comes from this, they're just going to take the
- 6:49Speaker 2: college basketball game clock and the NBA basketball game clock,
- 6:53Speaker 2: and they're going to.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Put that on college football games.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So once you get inside of a minute, it's going
- 6:57Speaker 2: to say there's 44.4 seconds left.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's 21.2 seconds. It's 6.1 seconds.
- 7:04Speaker 2: And then on that final down, we either would have
- 7:08Speaker 2: seen 0-0-0 or we would have seen 0-0-0. zero seven
- 7:14Speaker 2: or zero zero 0.4. I guess they only go to tens,
- 7:18Speaker 2: not hundreds. And we would have said they got one
- 7:20Speaker 2: more play 0.4 on the clock. And like that might
- 7:23Speaker 2: be a change that actually comes out of this particular
- 7:26Speaker 2: game in college football.
- 7:27Speaker 1: We need a name for this thing.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Like you need a name for the hand of God
- 7:32Speaker 2: or the kick six or whatever.
- 7:35Speaker 1: The fail.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Mary was that the replacement refs thing with Packers Seahawks.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 2: The DeMarc Sanchez butt fumble. There's certain plays that get
- 7:45Speaker 2: like an actual name, the re hail Mary.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I don't know. So we need a name for it again.
- 7:53Speaker 1: 3 5 3 0 700.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I asked this question on Twitter. We got some good responses.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I want some from the text line as well. 8
- 7:58Speaker 2: 7 7 3 5 3 0 700.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Call us.
- 8:02Speaker 2: We'd love to hear from you all by the way.
- 8:05Speaker 2: We got Zach Moss joining us. We've got Jeff Schwartz
- 8:08Speaker 2: joining us. And then sandwiched between those two guys will
- 8:11Speaker 2: be Jerem Jordan to talk some red and blue.
- 8:14Speaker 1: A quick aside here.
- 8:16Speaker 2: The Utah BYU rivalry is all the way back to
- 8:20Speaker 2: full ridiculous venom.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I saw your post.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I have never seen more conversation about.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Which.
- 8:34Speaker 2: One double a victory means more. And you guys were
- 8:39Speaker 2: playing Utah tech. So whatever happened there doesn't matter. And
- 8:42Speaker 2: then all you guys beat Idaho and you think you're great.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Like trying to adjudicate, trying to weigh the differences between a,
- 8:52Speaker 2: 60-point victory or a 57-point victory over two teams that
- 8:57Speaker 2: were brought in to lose, watching these two fan bases
- 9:00Speaker 2: go at it. Oh, you know what?
- 9:02Speaker 1: Bear Bachmeier looked pretty terrible.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Stop. All right?
- 9:06Speaker 2: It was a demolition by BYU. It was a demolition
- 9:10Speaker 2: by Utah. We don't need to go through that. It's
- 9:14Speaker 2: all going to come out in the wash. We have
- 9:15Speaker 2: a game between these two teams this year. And the
- 9:19Speaker 2: fact that the conversation, because... you're playing against Utah tech
- 9:24Speaker 2: and against Idaho. You couldn't talk trash to the Vandal fans.
- 9:28Speaker 2: You couldn't talk trash to the trailblazer fans. So everyone
- 9:30Speaker 2: just started talking trash to each other. It's rivalry week already.
- 9:34Speaker 2: And it's hilarious.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And I love it.
- 9:37Speaker 2: And I think that's how it's going to be this year.
- 9:39Speaker 2: And probably for every year moving forward. Now that BYU
- 9:42Speaker 2: has won three on the bounce. And now that the
- 9:45Speaker 2: rivalry is a rivalry again, because we're in the PAC
- 9:48Speaker 2: 12 era when it was just a decade of dominance
- 9:50Speaker 2: for Utah and It caused a lot of people to
- 9:53Speaker 2: kind of stick their heads in the sand and, you know,
- 9:55Speaker 2: they would hide behind their hand walking to church like, oh, please,
- 9:59Speaker 2: I don't want to make eye contact. contact and allow
- 10:01Speaker 2: you to talk trash because you're the Utah fan or whatever. Now,
- 10:05Speaker 2: you know, BYU fans are on their high horse and
- 10:08Speaker 2: they've climbed up to crow and pound their chest and
- 10:10Speaker 2: Utah fans can't stand it. And they can't stand it
- 10:14Speaker 2: because they feel like this team should have won in 2024.
- 10:16Speaker 1: This team could have won a game last year, whatever.
- 10:21Speaker 1: It's just, it's so close.
- 10:23Speaker 2: And I love that, that the rivalry with college football
- 10:27Speaker 2: season being back, the rivalry is once again in its
- 10:30Speaker 2: proper place as the focal point of a football season
- 10:36Speaker 2: where yes, more important things are at stake for both teams,
- 10:40Speaker 2: but that game is already in hyper-focus for certain segments
- 10:43Speaker 2: of the fan base.
- 10:45Speaker 1: And I couldn't love it more.
- 10:46Speaker 3: And can we get to the most important question from
- 10:49Speaker 3: the BYU Utah tech game in particular, uh, resident BYU fan,
- 10:54Speaker 3: other BYU fan, whoever else kook fans might be listening.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Did you, how many people paid for the game day experiences?
- 11:02Speaker 3: That's the most important question.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Great question.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Darren, our resident BYU fan, let us know if you
- 11:09Speaker 3: were at the game, you paid for one of those.
- 11:11Speaker 3: No tongue in cheek there. Um, But yeah, I was
- 11:16Speaker 3: just talking with Todd Newcomb, X96, out in the cantina
- 11:21Speaker 3: area here at the station OC.
- 11:24Speaker 1: About how those were basically preseason games.
- 11:27Speaker 3: And I went, as soon as they kicked off, as
- 11:30Speaker 3: soon as Utah went up a few scores, as soon
- 11:32Speaker 3: as BYU went up four scores, I was like, hold on,
- 11:35Speaker 3: why are we excited about this game? Because it's the
- 11:39Speaker 3: first game of the season.
- 11:40Speaker 1: That's why we're excited. But It probably.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Should garner the same amount of excitement as NFL preseason
- 11:49Speaker 3: game does because this is not meant to be a
- 11:52Speaker 3: loss unless you're Utah State against Idaho State, I guess.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I don't want to talk about the Aggies.
- 12:00Speaker 4: That's so bad.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Robert and I, what are you doing?
- 12:04Speaker 2: And you know what the craziest thing about this, and
- 12:07Speaker 2: I know there were some BYU fans talking about this,
- 12:10Speaker 2: respect to the Hillstead family. I know it's really, really
- 12:13Speaker 2: difficult to watch a young person with your family name
- 12:19Speaker 2: being dragged the way that he is being dragged right now,
- 12:21Speaker 2: but BYU fans... You were like a couple weeks away
- 12:26Speaker 2: from that being your starting quarterback last year. The entire
- 12:29Speaker 2: trajectory of your football program would be very drastically different
- 12:35Speaker 2: if Bear Bachmeier had not made the decision with Tiger
- 12:40Speaker 2: Bachmeier to transfer in, not in spring football, but to
- 12:46Speaker 2: be like, you know what?
- 12:47Speaker 1: It's fine. I'm going to show up in fall camp.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Everyone else in the country is like, well, the quarterback
- 12:53Speaker 2: decision is already, like, that's already been made at that point.
- 12:57Speaker 2: So if you're a QB who wants to play now,
- 12:59Speaker 2: you're like, I'm not transferring in in the fall.
- 13:01Speaker 1: You've got to transfer in in the spring and win
- 13:03Speaker 1: the job there.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Clearly, the Bachmeier family has a bit of an old-school
- 13:07Speaker 2: mentality there. Clearly, the messaging was right from Kalani and
- 13:10Speaker 2: his staff because they were like, trust me, you can
- 13:14Speaker 2: come in and you can potentially win this job. And,
- 13:17Speaker 2: of course, Bear Bachmeier did. And it changes everything. everything
- 13:20Speaker 2: so drastically. I think McKay Hillstead will end up having
- 13:23Speaker 2: a better year than the day that he had against
- 13:26Speaker 2: Idaho state, but it was abysmal.
- 13:29Speaker 1: It was horrific.
- 13:30Speaker 2: And Bronco Mendenhall and the Utah state Aggies have a very,
- 13:34Speaker 2: very serious quarterback problem because the backup who's more of
- 13:38Speaker 2: a dual threat athlete kind of guy who they don't
- 13:41Speaker 2: think can pass very well. He's just as bad with
- 13:44Speaker 2: his ball security. And with his decision-making, there was a
- 13:47Speaker 2: turnover machine. It, Nick Howell and the whole defensive staff.
- 13:53Speaker 2: It doesn't matter how good you.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Are because your offense is just going to hand the
- 13:57Speaker 1: ball back.
- 13:58Speaker 7: If they keep playing like that, it's hard to watch.
- 14:01Speaker 7: It was hard to watch.
- 14:02Speaker 1: That is really, really, really terrible from Utah state.
- 14:06Speaker 2: And it's, it's squarely on the shoulders of the offensive
- 14:10Speaker 2: side of the ball because you, you can't set anything up.
- 14:15Speaker 2: for yourselves, for your defense, when it comes to success,
- 14:18Speaker 2: when you're this, the, the slow play mesh point, it
- 14:23Speaker 2: looks like it's his own read, but he's handing it
- 14:25Speaker 2: off the whole time. So you're running back, just hits
- 14:27Speaker 2: the hole a second later than he should.
- 14:29Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Robert and I called in eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 14:33Speaker 2: zero 700. And explain to me what the bleep is
- 14:36Speaker 2: going on. Even with your run game, much less the
- 14:39Speaker 2: quarterback problem. text slide, 8 7 7 3 5 3
- 14:43Speaker 2: 0 700. The bail Mary seems to be the consensus
- 14:46Speaker 2: hail Mary, the bail Mary, Michigan got bailed out by
- 14:50Speaker 2: the extra second on the clock.
- 14:52Speaker 1: The, I need a second play maybe. I don't know.
- 14:55Speaker 2: And wit is totally, he's just been totally memed in
- 14:59Speaker 2: the first, first game of his college football Renaissance at Michigan.
- 15:06Speaker 1: What a nightmare.
- 15:08Speaker 2: For that staff and for Bryce Underwood and for like
- 15:13Speaker 2: everyone who contributed to the $ 12 million NIL deal that
- 15:17Speaker 2: allegedly Bryce Underwood signed when he was the number one
- 15:20Speaker 2: recruit in the country.
- 15:21Speaker 3: He was going to go to LSU play for, I
- 15:24Speaker 3: think Brian Kelly at the time, I think LSU might've
- 15:28Speaker 3: dodged a bullet there. So many, so many places to
- 15:31Speaker 3: go with this to OC locally. The first thing, and
- 15:34Speaker 3: it's not necessarily local thing other than it has to
- 15:37Speaker 3: do with Kyle Whittingham.
- 15:38Speaker 1: First thought I had.
- 15:40Speaker 3: And I'm watching the game with my wife, not a
- 15:42Speaker 3: huge football fan, but she was down there on the
- 15:44Speaker 3: couch watching it with me. I'm like, he won't be fired?
- 15:49Speaker 3: Because I'm thinking, they went up 12-7, 30 seconds left.
- 15:53Speaker 3: At that point, I start talking like this. Witt's not
- 15:57Speaker 3: going to be fired after this game, but the fan
- 16:00Speaker 3: base is going to say he should be, and that
- 16:03Speaker 3: fan base is not going to shut up about it
- 16:06Speaker 3: until he gets another win or rattles off a win
- 16:09Speaker 3: streak right after that kind of loss and that is
- 16:11Speaker 3: something i mean whit got plenty.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Of detractors here there's.
- 16:15Speaker 3: A certain twitter account that was calling for him to
- 16:18Speaker 3: get fired when they were having their best seasons in
- 16:21Speaker 3: utah right but i don't know that he's been on
- 16:24Speaker 3: in that kind of a pressure cooker before so that
- 16:26Speaker 3: was the first thought i had is like oh boy
- 16:28Speaker 3: how's he gonna handle everyone seemingly everyone in the world
- 16:32Speaker 3: saying you should be fired right now until you win again.
- 16:36Speaker 1: The other thing is Eric Weddle was right. People are
- 16:41Speaker 1: guy Eric Weddle.
- 16:42Speaker 2: It's Eric Weddle week, by the way, here in Utah,
- 16:44Speaker 2: he's going to be inducted into the ring of honor.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Perfect timing for this. His whole family is going to
- 16:48Speaker 2: be here on Saturday. That that's going to be a special,
- 16:53Speaker 2: special thing and a special moment for the Weddles for
- 16:56Speaker 2: anyone who knows him. And obviously we're lucky enough to
- 17:00Speaker 2: call him friend here on the program. And I'm happy
- 17:03Speaker 2: to have a relationship with him outside of just this program.
- 17:07Speaker 1: He's a great human being.
- 17:08Speaker 2: And the fact that he's going up on the side
- 17:12Speaker 2: of Rice Echo Stadium has everything to do with that
- 17:14Speaker 2: just as much as it does with his great football prowess.
- 17:18Speaker 2: And that was another victory lap for some of the
- 17:22Speaker 2: hardcore Ute fans to take because Weddle ran afoul of
- 17:27Speaker 2: the Michigan fan base and Michigan Twitter especially when he
- 17:30Speaker 2: just expressed some doubt about whether or not Bryce Underwood
- 17:34Speaker 2: was the savior of all things at Michigan football.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Wasn't really dragging the kid too hard.
- 17:43Speaker 2: He just was like, I don't know if he's really
- 17:45Speaker 2: what they need. I don't know if he's really as
- 17:47Speaker 2: secure as the starter. I don't know if I don't
- 17:50Speaker 2: love the player the way some other people do and
- 17:52Speaker 2: people attacked him. And it, it, it affected a lot
- 17:56Speaker 2: of the conversation around him in that one particular state.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And to watch some of those people be like, oh man,
- 18:03Speaker 2: he was right. like RJ callback was fantastic. Our guy,
- 18:08Speaker 2: RJ young, who he usually covers, you know, more big
- 18:12Speaker 2: 12 and sec stuff. He's an Oklahoma guy. And you know,
- 18:16Speaker 2: he's a Fox sports guy. RJ young is like, he's,
- 18:19Speaker 2: he's a big, big personality. And he is like, he's
- 18:23Speaker 2: a defender of any young man who is from a
- 18:26Speaker 2: particular racial background. And if you, if you ever criticize,
- 18:31Speaker 2: especially quarterbacks, His interpretation of that is, oh, you don't
- 18:35Speaker 2: like him because he's black. And so I'm going to
- 18:38Speaker 2: defend this guy and say that you're wrong about him
- 18:41Speaker 2: because what you're saying is rooted in some prejudice or whatever.
- 18:45Speaker 1: And he was one of the people who's just like, uh, uh, uh, uh.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And he went out.
- 18:49Speaker 2: There on, even that guy went out there on Saturday
- 18:51Speaker 2: night and said, we all owe Eric Weddle an apology.
- 18:54Speaker 1: And I was like that, that never happened.
- 18:57Speaker 3: I love the youth fans and his mentions going at
- 18:59Speaker 3: least at him.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Eric Weddle. Here's the problem.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Weddle's beard, right? So, so for all of you youth
- 19:05Speaker 2: fans and I am not among them.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Okay.
- 19:08Speaker 2: All of you youth fans that feel this is some
- 19:10Speaker 2: perceived victory lap for you because of the controversy around Michigan,
- 19:14Speaker 2: because of the discomfort that Kyle Whittingham and his staff
- 19:17Speaker 2: are feeling right now, because of the pain that Michigan
- 19:20Speaker 2: fans are feeling right now, you, you are rooting for
- 19:23Speaker 2: the downfall of our local legend who is now in
- 19:25Speaker 2: Ann Arbor and That's not me, but that can be you.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Here's where you need to push pause on your gloating
- 19:32Speaker 2: and your chest pounding and you're feeling good because no
- 19:35Speaker 2: matter what happens with Michigan, right? Unless Kyle Whittingham has
- 19:40Speaker 2: a truly disastrous year, like a seven win season there,
- 19:45Speaker 2: they're not firing him after this year, right? And the
- 19:49Speaker 2: Bryce under thing, I don't believe is going to figure
- 19:51Speaker 2: itself out in a way that satisfies Michigan fans.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And guess what that means?
- 19:58Speaker 2: Where is Jason Beck, Jim Harding, Kyle Whittingham going.
- 20:05Speaker 1: To look when it's like, hey, let's solve this Bryce
- 20:09Speaker 1: Underwood problem. The first, the.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Phone call, I would bet, the first preliminary text message
- 20:15Speaker 2: and phone calls to Bird Ficklin happened on Sunday.
- 20:20Speaker 1: They might have. Like, I would bet a sizable amount of.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Money Does Devin technically have a fifth year next year?
- 20:28Speaker 3: Does have a fifth year next year. That's scary for Utah. I,
- 20:33Speaker 3: both of those.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I imagine.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I imagine that both of those guys have already been
- 20:38Speaker 2: contacted because bird has a longer runway.
- 20:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:42Speaker 4: More eligibility.
- 20:43Speaker 1: He has more eligibility, right?
- 20:45Speaker 2: I don't think that they're going to want a one-year bandaid,
- 20:47Speaker 2: no matter what that looks like, but that that's where
- 20:50Speaker 2: the Utah celebration of this is.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Stops, right? Because it doesn't benefit you.
- 20:58Speaker 2: If Michigan football needs something that you have, that is
- 21:03Speaker 2: never going to benefit you. We learned that last January,
- 21:07Speaker 2: if Michigan football wants something that you have university of Utah,
- 21:11Speaker 2: they have the money to try and get it. And
- 21:14Speaker 2: you've got to be pretty lucky or in the right
- 21:16Speaker 2: situation with coaching.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Thank goodness.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Utah is right now with Morgan Scali to prevent Michigan
- 21:22Speaker 2: that from happening.
- 21:23Speaker 1: And guess what?
- 21:24Speaker 2: All that does is push the price higher for Michigan football.
- 21:27Speaker 2: So any celebration we're having over the demise of Bryce
- 21:31Speaker 2: Underwood and Michigan collectively as a Utah fan base has
- 21:36Speaker 2: to stop exactly there. Cause you don't, I actually want
- 21:41Speaker 2: Bryce Underwood to play above what we saw from him.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I want him to go out against Oklahoma next week. Yes.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Michigan's got the Sooners next week. Got that on the station,
- 21:49Speaker 3: by the way, on Saturday, I.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Want Bryce Underwood to have a five touchdown day, zero interception,
- 21:56Speaker 2: no fumbles rush for another 65 yards at a touchdown.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I want him to single-handedly beat Oklahoma so that There's
- 22:06Speaker 2: no more phone calls.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Controversy. There's no controversy.
- 22:09Speaker 2: There's no urgency for them to try to lay some
- 22:12Speaker 2: groundwork to steal away what you've got. Cause guess what
- 22:15Speaker 2: they did with JJ Buchanan was their player of the
- 22:18Speaker 2: game in this game. Now that's not saying much because
- 22:22Speaker 2: so many people underperformed and it looked terrible. JJ Buchanan
- 22:25Speaker 2: was on the field more than any other skilled player
- 22:29Speaker 2: in for Michigan on offense. He had more snaps than
- 22:34Speaker 2: any other skilled player for Michigan with the exception of
- 22:37Speaker 2: the quarterback. All the, it was 51 offensive snaps that
- 22:41Speaker 2: they only ran 51 offensive plays because Western Michigan was
- 22:45Speaker 2: playing ball control and driving with the run game on Michigan,
- 22:49Speaker 2: which is its own conversation. It was quarterback, offensive line,
- 22:55Speaker 2: offensive line, offensive line. Then JJ Buchanan, when it came
- 22:59Speaker 2: to the snap count, That kid is hyper legit. We
- 23:02Speaker 2: knew that when he emerged last year, you wanted to
- 23:06Speaker 2: keep him. You were not able to, not because JJ
- 23:08Speaker 2: is a bad dude who is looking over the fence,
- 23:11Speaker 2: but because Michigan could offer something that Utah can't. You
- 23:15Speaker 2: don't want Michigan to want bird or to want Devin
- 23:18Speaker 2: or to want both of them.
- 23:20Speaker 4: Okay.
- 23:20Speaker 2: So let's root for Michigan to have felt this embarrassment,
- 23:24Speaker 2: to have you know, played with fire and got burnt
- 23:29Speaker 2: and then said, all.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Right, now things need to be a little bit better.
- 23:32Speaker 2: You don't have to root for them to win a championship,
- 23:34Speaker 2: but please root for them to not be looking in
- 23:37Speaker 2: your cupboard for what they need.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Please don't root for them to win a championship. Just
- 23:41Speaker 1: that just for me personally.
- 23:43Speaker 3: No, I will be partially rooting for Bryce Underwood to
- 23:49Speaker 3: have a good season for those reasons. OC, because you know,
- 23:54Speaker 3: running the home of the youth site. You can't help,
- 23:57Speaker 3: but pull for the team.
- 23:59Speaker 1: You cover a little bit there. Oh, see.
- 24:02Speaker 3: But as everyone knows, as a Buckeyes fan, hopefully Bryce
- 24:06Speaker 3: Underwood plays better individually, but they still lose all their games.
- 24:10Speaker 1: That's that's how I feel about that. So mega controversy.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Do you think Michigan deserve that extra snap, that extra
- 24:18Speaker 2: one second? What the explanations that came back and them
- 24:22Speaker 2: saying like, well, this is the actual clock.
- 24:24Speaker 1: That the replay officials were looking at that. Therein lies
- 24:27Speaker 1: the problem for me.
- 24:28Speaker 4: I'll see, but you keep going.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And all of us can agree that, well, why do
- 24:32Speaker 2: those things not match the game clock that I see
- 24:35Speaker 2: on TV that they see in the stadium and that
- 24:38Speaker 2: the replay officials have should.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Be the exact same.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Otherwise it's going to leave everyone room and justifiable room
- 24:46Speaker 2: to say, well, where's the integrity in this process? And
- 24:51Speaker 2: would the same thing have happened had it been a
- 24:54Speaker 2: role reversal where Western Michigan, clock expires on their hopes,
- 25:00Speaker 2: their thin hopes to win a game, and it goes
- 25:02Speaker 2: to review. Does the replay official then come out and say,
- 25:06Speaker 2: turns out there's more time left on the clock. One
- 25:09Speaker 2: more play for Western Michigan. It's very easy because they
- 25:12Speaker 2: are part of the have-nots, and Michigan is one of
- 25:15Speaker 2: the utmost haves. It's very easy for us to say, yeah,
- 25:19Speaker 2: that that treatment wouldn't have gone both ways as it stands.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham is one to know and feeling like he's
- 25:26Speaker 2: Owen one. And that is such a weird place. And
- 25:29Speaker 2: by the way, being talked about by everybody in the
- 25:34Speaker 2: country in a manner, like he didn't like to be
- 25:37Speaker 2: talked about too much.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Even when people were.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Like, Hey, this is the greatest program West of the
- 25:42Speaker 2: Mississippi death.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Taxes, Utah football. He's like, okay, calm down. Let's not
- 25:47Speaker 1: talk about it.
- 25:47Speaker 4: We haven't won anything yet.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I don't want to have to do too many interviews.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Can you imagine the next time he goes on Dan Patrick?
- 25:55Speaker 2: Can you imagine the next time when Rich Eisen gets
- 25:57Speaker 2: to talk to Kyle Whittingham? Those guys have to discuss this.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham will be answering questions about this play for
- 26:05Speaker 2: the rest of his career.
- 26:07Speaker 1: The bail Mary, we're going to call it that here.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I love that.
- 26:11Speaker 2: The bail Mary is now going to be one of
- 26:13Speaker 2: the defining moments of Kyle Whittingham's entire college football career.
- 26:17Speaker 2: For most people, that is the defining moment because most
- 26:21Speaker 2: people didn't pay attention, not in a real way to
- 26:23Speaker 2: what he did here in salt Lake city.
- 26:26Speaker 1: It happened in his first game at Michigan. You know, crazy.
- 26:29Speaker 1: That is this.
- 26:30Speaker 2: And by the way, by the way, We have that
- 26:34Speaker 2: game on a Saturday and then the Monday night game,
- 26:37Speaker 2: which was awesome, which was a great game.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Congratulations, SMU.
- 26:42Speaker 2: So you have that game on a Saturday where you
- 26:44Speaker 2: go to the top secret technologically advanced game clock to
- 26:49Speaker 2: get the one extra second.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And then all the way at the other end of
- 26:52Speaker 1: the spectrum.
- 26:53Speaker 2: They have to kick off a game where there is
- 26:55Speaker 2: no game clock, where there is no replay, where there
- 26:58Speaker 2: is no scoreboard because Florida State apparently doesn't have power
- 27:02Speaker 2: to the stadium. Those two things happen in the same
- 27:06Speaker 2: college football weekend. Tell me this is not the greatest
- 27:10Speaker 2: sport on the American landscape, on the world landscape.
- 27:14Speaker 1: You can't convince me.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Nothing is better than college football because you could not
- 27:19Speaker 2: have scripted such absurdity.
- 27:22Speaker 1: And Utah's 1-0. BYU's 1-0. And hurtling towards.
- 27:27Speaker 2: A matchup against one another where the fan base on
- 27:30Speaker 2: both sides is already in mid-season form of ridiculousness.
- 27:35Speaker 1: It's glorious.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Even, I mean, the other reason you started talking about
- 27:42Speaker 3: how great it is that rivalry banters already here. They
- 27:45Speaker 3: don't play for two months almost exactly, but they're already
- 27:50Speaker 3: comparing and contrasting wins against FCS opponents. Like they're like,
- 27:55Speaker 3: they're playing like they both played Texas tech for crying
- 27:58Speaker 3: out loud. You had Utes fans in your mentions upset
- 28:02Speaker 3: at you on Twitter for saying something that they thought
- 28:05Speaker 3: was positive towards BYU. When you were actually saying no,
- 28:08Speaker 3: like here's a red flag here about BYU and that
- 28:12Speaker 3: Utah tech game. Oh, see like it, it's already out
- 28:14Speaker 3: of control. And we love that here on the home
- 28:17Speaker 3: of the Utes. Oh man, this is great stuff. Um,
- 28:23Speaker 3: I asked another question on Twitter. We're going to get
- 28:25Speaker 3: to some responses.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I want you to text them as well.
- 28:28Speaker 6: 877-353-0700.
- 28:29Speaker 2: I'm going to ask Zach Moss this when he joins
- 28:32Speaker 2: us next.
- 28:33Speaker 1: So Michigan got a mulligan, right?
- 28:35Speaker 2: The bail Mary was effectively Bryce Underwood on a hail Mary, uh,
- 28:41Speaker 2: almost zero chance opportunity. He gave them zero chance because
- 28:44Speaker 2: he threw the first one out of the back of
- 28:46Speaker 2: the end zone. Then he got a mulligan and he
- 28:48Speaker 2: threw the next one to the front of the end zone.
- 28:50Speaker 2: And JJ Buchanan went and made an all American play.
- 28:54Speaker 2: And he's a Utah legend. And he's a Michigan legend,
- 28:57Speaker 2: even more because of that play by itself. Now, if
- 29:01Speaker 2: you can have one play back in Utah football history,
- 29:06Speaker 2: one game deciding play back.
- 29:10Speaker 1: What play is that?
- 29:13Speaker 6: 877-353-0700.
- 29:14Speaker 2: We've had some great responses already on Twitter. I'll read
- 29:19Speaker 2: some of those responses and hopefully we'll get a few
- 29:21Speaker 2: more on the text line at 877-353-0700. Let's take a
- 29:28Speaker 2: quick one here on the Sean O'Connell show. We'll come
- 29:30Speaker 2: back with the Utah football legend Zach Moss talking all
- 29:34Speaker 2: things Utes and of course the wild world of college football.
- 29:39Speaker 7: Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 29:41Speaker 7: You're tuned to.
- 29:47Speaker 5: The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of
- 29:51Speaker 5: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 30:01Speaker 7: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the
- 30:05Speaker 7: Utah football legend, Zach Moss, who, of course, is now
- 30:08Speaker 7: roaming sidelines on the Utah radio broadcast as part of
- 30:12Speaker 7: our crew with Bill Riley and Stevenson Sylvester.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Zach Moss, welcome back to the show. How are you, sir?
- 30:20Speaker 8: Good, good.
- 30:20Speaker 5: How you been?
- 30:21Speaker 1: Been all right, man. So how'd it go? How'd Thursday
- 30:25Speaker 1: night go for you?
- 30:26Speaker 9: Oh, it was good.
- 30:28Speaker 8: It was real good. It was.
- 30:30Speaker 9: fun experience getting that first one under my belt. Got
- 30:33Speaker 9: to see a lot of touchdowns. So that was, that
- 30:35Speaker 9: was awesome. But yeah, overall went really good.
- 30:40Speaker 2: What did you see from this team that, well, we'll
- 30:43Speaker 2: start on the positive end. What did you see from
- 30:45Speaker 2: this university of Utah football team against an, an overmatched
- 30:49Speaker 2: Idaho Vandals squad that made you feel like some of
- 30:52Speaker 2: the success we saw on Thursday night can translate to this.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Saturday and next Saturday and beyond.
- 31:00Speaker 9: Um, I saw a lot of good stuff, I think
- 31:03Speaker 9: mainly on the defense, um, that I really like, uh,
- 31:07Speaker 9: on the offensive side of the ball, you know, I
- 31:09Speaker 9: think we, we, I think we did a lot of
- 31:11Speaker 9: different things, which was really cool just to put on
- 31:14Speaker 9: film and, you know, putting guys kind of see what
- 31:16Speaker 9: actually works, what doesn't work versus a different defense.
- 31:20Speaker 8: Um, I love the fact that.
- 31:22Speaker 9: We took a lot of shots downfield, even though we
- 31:26Speaker 9: didn't come up with a lot of them, just the
- 31:28Speaker 9: fact that we were aggressive because once you get into
- 31:32Speaker 9: those other games and being that aggressive, those can turn
- 31:35Speaker 9: in real easily to a lot of catches, and you'll
- 31:38Speaker 9: get a lot of 50-50 penalty falls and things of
- 31:41Speaker 9: that nature as well.
- 31:41Speaker 4: So I thought overall.
- 31:43Speaker 9: They did a lot of different things with a lot
- 31:46Speaker 9: of variety, and it resulted in obviously a big win
- 31:51Speaker 9: from the stats-wise of things. So, you know, that was
- 31:55Speaker 9: really good.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Anything that you were like, okay, that needs to be
- 32:00Speaker 2: cleaned up before Arkansas rolls into town?
- 32:04Speaker 9: I did love how we weren't able to move them
- 32:06Speaker 9: guys up front in our inside run game just all night.
- 32:12Speaker 9: I think Coach Scali even talked about it a little bit, right?
- 32:15Speaker 9: The unit, the offensive line unit, they started to get
- 32:19Speaker 9: better as the game went. And, you know, that makes
- 32:23Speaker 9: sense on why, right? But with going against a team
- 32:27Speaker 9: like that, right, with all respect due to Idaho, like
- 32:30Speaker 9: you would have loved to see us just dominate up front,
- 32:34Speaker 9: especially in between the two A and B gaps. I
- 32:38Speaker 9: think the guys did really well. Obviously, from the communication standpoint, things,
- 32:42Speaker 9: no pre-snap, no post-snap penalty. I think they had one
- 32:45Speaker 9: penalty all night overall as an offense. So, you know,
- 32:48Speaker 9: there's a ton of good things that they did on
- 32:51Speaker 9: the film. A lot of the outside plays, getting to
- 32:53Speaker 9: the edges, worked very well for our offense as well.
- 32:57Speaker 9: But I think just the inside run, because, you know,
- 33:02Speaker 9: that would have told me a lot. But, you know,
- 33:05Speaker 9: they get another chance this weekend.
- 33:10Speaker 2: We talked about this during camp and the summer, right?
- 33:13Speaker 2: There's only one ball and a lot of weapons. And
- 33:16Speaker 2: when you scored nine touchdowns in a game, you know,
- 33:19Speaker 2: everyone gets touches. And when you get the twos and
- 33:21Speaker 2: the threes and the fours play and everyone gets touches
- 33:24Speaker 2: and they spread the wealth around, you saw great things
- 33:26Speaker 2: from pagan. You saw great things from way Sean in
- 33:30Speaker 2: both the passing game and the run game. Is there
- 33:34Speaker 2: anybody that you'd need to see more of against Arkansas?
- 33:38Speaker 2: Because it's not going to be letting the threes and
- 33:41Speaker 2: the fours play against the Razorbacks.
- 33:42Speaker 1: At least we don't think so.
- 33:45Speaker 8: That would be nice.
- 33:47Speaker 9: But I think, honestly, we would have saw a lot
- 33:52Speaker 9: more of Dave Bray if he didn't have to go
- 33:56Speaker 9: to the concussion protocol early.
- 33:57Speaker 8: In that game.
- 33:58Speaker 9: I think that kind of hurt a lot of the
- 34:00Speaker 9: different things they kind of wanted to do probably as well.
- 34:05Speaker 9: I think Kyrie Scholes is another guy that they are
- 34:08Speaker 9: probably going to get into the mix a little bit more.
- 34:10Speaker 9: I love the fact that they spread the ball around
- 34:12Speaker 9: very well in this particular game. I think eight different
- 34:16Speaker 9: guys caught passes, which was really good to see that
- 34:21Speaker 9: they can counter so many different people. I think Connor
- 34:24Speaker 9: Andrews will have a bigger game. Obviously, some things are
- 34:27Speaker 9: just on film that you just don't want to put
- 34:30Speaker 9: out there. Um, I love that. Like I said, I
- 34:32Speaker 9: love the fact that the, I think that game was
- 34:34Speaker 9: more so about just the different variations of formations that
- 34:38Speaker 9: they have and using different people in different spots in
- 34:41Speaker 9: an untraditional spot.
- 34:42Speaker 10: Right.
- 34:43Speaker 9: You know, obviously, uh, pickling running above a route, things
- 34:48Speaker 9: like that. And throwing the ball out of that.
- 34:51Speaker 8: Right.
- 34:51Speaker 9: So putting that on film in week one, I think
- 34:54Speaker 9: it was more so about just trying to give Arkansas
- 34:56Speaker 9: a little bit of a headache coming out of week
- 34:59Speaker 9: one and thinking about all the different things they're going
- 35:00Speaker 9: to have to guard.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Let's talk about the big picture world of college football
- 35:06Speaker 2: with a crazy weekend, absolutely insane weekend. And of course,
- 35:11Speaker 2: Michigan was right at the center of that controversy with
- 35:14Speaker 2: the deep connections to this university of Utah program. Kyle
- 35:17Speaker 2: Whittingham barely escapes against Western Michigan. And his first game
- 35:21Speaker 2: is the Michigan head coach, JJ Buchanan and Smith Snowden.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Both had great games for the Wolverines.
- 35:27Speaker 2: They're like two of four players on the entire team
- 35:30Speaker 2: who played well, it seems like, but you know, one
- 35:33Speaker 2: second put back on the clock after time expired. I'm
- 35:36Speaker 2: sure if you didn't see it live, you saw the
- 35:38Speaker 2: replay and all the conversation. as a guy who's played
- 35:41Speaker 2: this game at the highest level in college football and
- 35:43Speaker 2: at the highest level in the NFL, have you seen
- 35:45Speaker 2: anything like that before?
- 35:47Speaker 1: What were your thoughts?
- 35:48Speaker 2: Just walk me through your reaction to Michigan getting a
- 35:50Speaker 2: second back.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:54Speaker 9: You know, I think overall I did watch, I actually
- 35:57Speaker 9: was able to catch the back end of that game
- 36:00Speaker 9: instead of having to watch that whole game, which seems
- 36:02Speaker 9: like it was a good idea doing that way.
- 36:05Speaker 8: But yeah, You know, the.
- 36:08Speaker 9: First help Mary throw, you know, I didn't like that
- 36:11Speaker 9: they attempted at it so fast. And then obviously the
- 36:17Speaker 9: huge controversial one, the second one that actually gets caught.
- 36:23Speaker 6: The first one.
- 36:26Speaker 9: I don't know how you put time back on the clock.
- 36:28Speaker 9: I think the Big Ten did come out with a
- 36:31Speaker 9: statement of potentially I think it touched someone. You know,
- 36:35Speaker 9: I always remember when we would do these clock situations
- 36:41Speaker 9: and we would throw the ball out of bounds, right?
- 36:45Speaker 9: The quarterback was always told, hey, we want to get
- 36:47Speaker 9: this ball up and down as quickly as possible, right?
- 36:51Speaker 9: So I've always, you know, been.
- 36:54Speaker 9: Pretty much train to see the ball hit the ground
- 36:57Speaker 9: first before that clock stops. And I thought it was
- 37:00Speaker 9: definitely over because if it needs to hit the ground,
- 37:04Speaker 9: the game was over, but I guess they ruled it
- 37:06Speaker 9: off of it touching a player. I'm not a thousand
- 37:10Speaker 9: percent accurate on that, but I didn't know the clock
- 37:13Speaker 9: will stop. If it hits a play, I thought it
- 37:14Speaker 9: had to hit the ground. So I was a bit confused,
- 37:17Speaker 9: but you know, supposedly, you know, they got that second back,
- 37:22Speaker 9: but you still got to go out there and do
- 37:25Speaker 9: it right. And he made a much, much better throw
- 37:28Speaker 9: the second time around, obviously with a big target there. So,
- 37:31Speaker 9: you know, they definitely pulled one out of the hat.
- 37:36Speaker 9: If I'm Western Michigan, it sucks to lose.
- 37:38Speaker 8: A game that way.
- 37:38Speaker 9: I've never lost a game in that style. I've lost
- 37:41Speaker 9: one in Hail Mary, just never with time put back
- 37:44Speaker 9: on the clock and giving them two chances at it.
- 37:47Speaker 2: If you're on Michigan's team right now, what are you
- 37:50Speaker 2: saying to Bryce Underwood? He is a hot topic. People
- 37:53Speaker 2: are dragging him. People are writing him off. Obviously, he's
- 37:56Speaker 2: a high-profile player who's been given a lot of NIL money,
- 38:00Speaker 2: and that changes the way that people feel about you,
- 38:03Speaker 2: talk about you, et cetera. It feels more disappointing if
- 38:06Speaker 2: you don't live up to that and all those things.
- 38:09Speaker 2: But if you're a teammate, you've got to get this
- 38:11Speaker 2: guy right. What are you saying to that young man
- 38:13Speaker 2: if you're in the locker room with him and you
- 38:15Speaker 2: want to go out and beat Oklahoma on Saturday?
- 38:19Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, you know, he's the engine of that team, right?
- 38:22Speaker 9: He's the reason that we even talk about Michigan overall, right,
- 38:26Speaker 9: no matter who the head coach is. You know, obviously
- 38:29Speaker 9: he's highly touted when he came in, huge prospect, a
- 38:33Speaker 9: lot of talent. dual threat quarterback. You know, I think
- 38:38Speaker 9: you have to figure out a way. This is the
- 38:39Speaker 9: part where, you know, a lot of these college athletes,
- 38:43Speaker 9: now that they're making all this money, this is the
- 38:45Speaker 9: other side of it as well. All the scrutiny, right, that...
- 38:49Speaker 9: just used to come almost from the local media to
- 38:51Speaker 9: some degree. Right now, it's the big media companies overall
- 38:55Speaker 9: that you're seeing on TV scrutinizing a kid, you know, 19, 20, whatever,
- 39:00Speaker 9: how old they be, just because of the amount of
- 39:03Speaker 9: money that he's putting in his pocket.
- 39:06Speaker 8: You know, at the end of the day, you still.
- 39:07Speaker 9: Have to realize that, you know, these guys are kids,
- 39:10Speaker 9: even though they are making a lot of money playing
- 39:13Speaker 9: a game. You know, that part of the human aspect,
- 39:16Speaker 9: I feel like always has to, you know, still be
- 39:19Speaker 9: there um but he does have the responsibility of a
- 39:24Speaker 9: guy who is making a lot of money right Like
- 39:26Speaker 9: I said, that's the part of making the.
- 39:28Speaker 8: Money, right?
- 39:29Speaker 9: It's now everyone doesn't look at you as, you know,
- 39:33Speaker 9: essentially a poor college kid. They're looking at you as
- 39:36Speaker 9: a college kid with tons of money and a lot
- 39:40Speaker 9: of different things of that nature.
- 39:41Speaker 8: So you've got to perform.
- 39:42Speaker 9: I think, you know, no one is harder on themselves
- 39:46Speaker 9: than an athlete, you know, and that's usually why when
- 39:50Speaker 9: they watch, you know, the show. They listen to people
- 39:54Speaker 9: talking and things of that nature, right? They take it
- 39:56Speaker 9: even harder because they're already really hard on themselves. So,
- 39:59Speaker 9: you know, he just has to, you know... put the
- 40:03Speaker 9: blinders on, right? He can't have just one good game
- 40:06Speaker 9: versus Oklahoma, right? He has to now, because all those
- 40:10Speaker 9: noises just come right back to him after the game
- 40:13Speaker 9: of Oklahoma. So he has to figure out a way
- 40:14Speaker 9: to put a string of games together and really show
- 40:17Speaker 9: the guy that he was supposed to be, right? Or
- 40:20Speaker 9: that he feel like he even is meant to be, right?
- 40:22Speaker 9: And I think he has the right people in place overall, right? He's...
- 40:26Speaker 9: very raw, talented quarterback. And it's just about doing the
- 40:29Speaker 9: small things over and over and over. And, you know,
- 40:32Speaker 9: like I said, that's the good thing about football. When
- 40:34Speaker 9: it's that time of the year, you get a few
- 40:36Speaker 9: opportunities to really go out and show it. You got
- 40:38Speaker 9: to go out there and maximize it.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Last question before I cut you loose. If you could
- 40:46Speaker 2: go back and you get one more play, one second, right?
- 40:51Speaker 2: One mulligan like Michigan did. On a game-changing play, on
- 40:55Speaker 2: a game-deciding play for Utah football, you get to overdo it.
- 40:58Speaker 1: You get to run it back.
- 41:00Speaker 2: What play are you taking away and putting a second
- 41:02Speaker 2: back on the clock and letting Utah try it again?
- 41:07Speaker 5: Oof.
- 41:08Speaker 8: For the Hail Mary attempt?
- 41:11Speaker 1: Well, it doesn't have to be a Hail Mary.
- 41:13Speaker 2: People are saying the penalty from a couple years ago,
- 41:20Speaker 2: pick up that flag and Redo that play that kind
- 41:24Speaker 2: of thing.
- 41:26Speaker 9: Oh man.
- 41:30Speaker 1: One play.
- 41:31Speaker 8: That's tough.
- 41:32Speaker 9: That's real tough. Um, I think I'm not, I'm seeing
- 41:38Speaker 9: if my memory serves me really well here or not, but, uh,
- 41:42Speaker 9: 2018 Pac-12 championship game versus Washington, um, there was a
- 41:48Speaker 9: few calls in that game. I would have loved to
- 41:50Speaker 9: see that game go a little differently.
- 41:52Speaker 1: I think it was 10 to three.
- 41:54Speaker 9: And I think it was a big play that swung
- 41:57Speaker 9: the momentum their way. So I'm ready to take that
- 42:00Speaker 9: play away.
- 42:00Speaker 8: Yes.
- 42:01Speaker 2: So that one came in, I put this out on
- 42:03Speaker 2: Twitter and someone said that exact play because it was,
- 42:06Speaker 2: it was an interception Washington got an interception that deflected
- 42:12Speaker 2: off somebody's foot and bounced up into the air.
- 42:14Speaker 1: It was like a freak play.
- 42:15Speaker 2: You take that play away and the game changes completely.
- 42:19Speaker 2: And maybe Utah gets a Pac-12 championship a few years early.
- 42:24Speaker 9: Yeah, maybe we would have got one there, and then
- 42:27Speaker 9: those guys, they would have got a few more after
- 42:30Speaker 9: that as well as they did.
- 42:32Speaker 8: So yeah, I'll go with that one.
- 42:34Speaker 9: I'll go with that one, yeah.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Somebody also sent in that final play against Cal when
- 42:42Speaker 2: the fourth down stop against Cal.
- 42:45Speaker 1: I was like, maybe Zach will say that one.
- 42:47Speaker 9: Now I haven't even, you know, I haven't even thought
- 42:49Speaker 9: about that one yet. I would have been nice too,
- 42:52Speaker 9: but I think the championship game one would have been nice.
- 42:55Speaker 1: That's more impactful. The championship game is more impactful.
- 42:58Speaker 8: Yeah. I think I've made up for that.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Stop a few, a few times over.
- 43:03Speaker 1: I think that's safe to say Zach.
- 43:05Speaker 6: All right, man.
- 43:06Speaker 1: We'll see up there on Saturday.
- 43:07Speaker 7: Appreciate you giving us some time today.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Thanks man. Yes, absolutely. Appreciate it. All right.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I'm going to read some of the responses that we
- 43:14Speaker 2: did get on the question.
- 43:18Speaker 11: 877-353-0700.
- 43:22Speaker 1: Michigan got a mulligan, right?
- 43:23Speaker 2: They got a do-over on a game-changing, game-deciding play.
- 43:27Speaker 1: You get to go back.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Any Utah football play in history, it's got to be
- 43:31Speaker 2: a game-decider, okay? Tell me what game-deciding play you're getting
- 43:36Speaker 2: your mulligan for with this Utah football team. 877-353-0700 at

- 44:36Speaker 1: Local manufacturing. Local windows. Local doors, too, if you want
- 44:40Speaker 1: to test them out on doors.
- 44:42Speaker 2: Local window coverings, direct to the public, no middleman, which
- 44:46Speaker 2: means there's no, oh, that's not our problem.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Oh, the installer was wrong here, not the sales.
- 44:51Speaker 2: The product itself is good, but the subcontractor used to
- 44:54Speaker 2: put the window in, that's the person who has to
- 44:57Speaker 2: pay for the mistake on this window. They handle the
- 45:00Speaker 2: whole process and warranty these windows for a lifetime. It's
- 45:04Speaker 2: all in-house. There's no hidden costs. There's no, hey, call

- 45:51Speaker 2: of it. And it's transferable. Tell them OC sent you
- 45:55Speaker 2: 801-850-9100 or advancewindows.com. All right, I put a question out
- 46:02Speaker 2: on Twitter, 877-353-0700, if you want to answer it on
- 46:03Speaker 2: the text line. You get a Mulligan on one game
- 46:09Speaker 2: deciding play in Utah football history. You run it back
- 46:14Speaker 2: the way Michigan got to run it back against Western
- 46:16Speaker 2: Michigan and they avoided disaster.
- 46:18Speaker 1: They avoided tragedy.
- 46:19Speaker 2: JJ Buchanan goes up, grabs a wild hail Mary attempt
- 46:24Speaker 2: from Bryce Underwood.
- 46:26Speaker 1: He puts it in the right spot. Cause why? Cause
- 46:28Speaker 1: he got a Mulligan the first time he played it.
- 46:31Speaker 1: He failed. He screwed it up.
- 46:32Speaker 2: He threw it into the back of the end zone.
- 46:34Speaker 2: When you get a mulligan, you could do it better.
- 46:35Speaker 1: The next time.
- 46:36Speaker 2: So let's assume Utah does it better the next time.
- 46:39Speaker 2: And tell me what play you're, you're going to run back.
- 46:42Speaker 2: You're going back in time. You're letting it happen again.
- 46:45Speaker 2: We got some great responses. Botch punt from the 2021
- 46:50Speaker 2: Rose bowl. It was just a drop snap that gave
- 46:54Speaker 2: the Ohio state Buckeyes like first and 10 from the
- 46:58Speaker 2: 16 yard line or something crazy.
- 47:01Speaker 4: That offense didn't need Utah's help.
- 47:03Speaker 3: That's a, that's a, that's a good one.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Cam rising, trying to complete that ball in the 2024
- 47:08Speaker 2: Baylor game. That's what I didn't even think about. Like
- 47:12Speaker 2: if you could just take away an injury.
- 47:14Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 47:14Speaker 3: Did you see, did you see someone, someone said, I'm
- 47:18Speaker 3: going to sneak down and, and take the Gatorade coolers
- 47:21Speaker 3: away from Baylor side.
- 47:23Speaker 6: Wasn't it?
- 47:23Speaker 1: Wasn't it on the Utah sideline though?
- 47:27Speaker 3: I don't remember what it was, but he, he, he
- 47:30Speaker 3: slammed his hand into the table or the coolers.
- 47:34Speaker 1: And we all know.
- 47:35Speaker 2: What happened after that defensive pass interference of the 2024
- 47:39Speaker 2: Holy war. I, so that one, yes, that sucked, but
- 47:44Speaker 2: let him have the pass interference and feel like, oh, we're,
- 47:47Speaker 2: we're back alive and give me cam Calhoun, letting the
- 47:51Speaker 2: interception go through his fingertips two plays later. Because imagine
- 47:56Speaker 2: if you got the sack, and then that was taken
- 47:59Speaker 2: away from you, and then the BYU fans, they feel
- 48:02Speaker 2: like they have hope again, and then you snatch it
- 48:05Speaker 2: away with an interception two plays later.
- 48:08Speaker 1: That's even more devastating in a rivalry game.
- 48:11Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Yeah, the interception was a bigger deal than the defensive PI, right?
- 48:17Speaker 3: That wasn't on fourth down. The defensive PI, I don't believe.
- 48:22Speaker 3: BYU still had a fourth down play, I believe. No,
- 48:26Speaker 3: that was fourth down.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Was that fourth?
- 48:27Speaker 3: Oh, so the game would have been over either way.
- 48:30Speaker 3: So yeah, either one of those is good. The interception
- 48:32Speaker 3: is because defensive PI was at least, or was it
- 48:36Speaker 3: holding that they called is at least borderline holding, right?
- 48:42Speaker 3: If not, if not definitively holding the interception, like that one,
- 48:46Speaker 3: that one just bounced right out of his hands.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Like you needed to, you needed to come down. I
- 48:50Speaker 1: want to ask this question.
- 48:52Speaker 2: To be why you fans also, because like a lot
- 48:55Speaker 2: of these responses are rivalry game things of the Harleen play.
- 48:59Speaker 1: So just put somebody on Harleen, but you would, you
- 49:02Speaker 1: would have ran in and covered Harley could not find it.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Harley was open for 75 seconds. Just put someone on him.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Eventually he's going to get tackled, whatever.
- 49:11Speaker 8: Right.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Ryan caught a Sheryl's doinked field goal. The shoe deflection
- 49:16Speaker 2: pick six in the PAC 12 championship game in 2018,
- 49:18Speaker 2: there were no offensive touchdowns scored in that game. And
- 49:23Speaker 2: it bounced up off the shoe and Washington took it
- 49:26Speaker 2: all the way back.
- 49:27Speaker 1: We got some great ones.
- 49:29Speaker 2: That one, that one makes most sense to me maybe
- 49:31Speaker 2: because you win a PAC 12 championship.
- 49:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Your first one, we were talking about this just barely
- 49:37Speaker 3: off air OC is that one a bigger deal than
- 49:42Speaker 3: the botched punt in the Rose bowl? And I think
- 49:45Speaker 3: we decided probably the Rose bowl because it's the Rose bowl, right?
- 49:49Speaker 2: Speaker 2, winning pack 12 championships after 2018. So you,
- 49:52Speaker 2: you check that box. You, you have that trophy in
- 49:55Speaker 2: the trophy case. Utah was never able to win the
- 49:58Speaker 2: Rose bowl. So if there was a play and there
- 50:00Speaker 2: was probably three or four in that game that would
- 50:02Speaker 2: have decided things one way or the other, like what
- 50:04Speaker 2: if cam rising just doesn't get knocked.
- 50:06Speaker 1: On another injury prevention, right? Like all respect to Bryson
- 50:11Speaker 1: Barnes who came in and threw a touchdown.
- 50:12Speaker 8: Right.
- 50:13Speaker 2: But like, if you have your guy, then the next
- 50:15Speaker 2: drive after that touchdown drive maybe is a lot different.
- 50:18Speaker 2: I don't know, but you get a Mulligan, you get
- 50:20Speaker 2: to take a playback and do it over. the interception
- 50:25Speaker 2: in the end zone at Florida.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Is there a, what's a close rivalry win in the
- 50:31Speaker 3: nine game win streak that BYU fans would be?
- 50:35Speaker 2: Well, they stopped on short yardage and fourth and goal.
- 50:39Speaker 2: How about Brandon Burton punt or the field goal block?
- 50:42Speaker 2: I mean, there's a bunch of them.
- 50:43Speaker 3: How about 2013? Your kicker makes one of those field
- 50:46Speaker 3: goals when the game ended three times.
- 50:49Speaker 1: How about that? How about that? How about, how about
- 50:51Speaker 1: last year?
- 50:54Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham just kicks a field goal instead of going.
- 50:57Speaker 1: For it on one of those fourth downs.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Not even all of them just on one of them.
- 51:02Speaker 2: And it's a made field goal. We'll take any assortment
- 51:05Speaker 2: of Mulligan's on that one. Stan came in with Darren
- 51:09Speaker 2: Carrington's touchdown for Oregon against us.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Another great one was brought in, in the text line.
- 51:15Speaker 2: When Dante Pettis from Washington had the return touchdown where
- 51:20Speaker 2: there was like 15 block at the back penalties missed,
- 51:24Speaker 2: but he scored the touchdown.
- 51:26Speaker 1: 1 0. 1 0.
- 51:27Speaker 3: Those penalties gets actually called or you just tackle the guy.
- 51:32Speaker 2: The muff punt against BYU last year, coming from Spencer,
- 51:35Speaker 2: that one probably changes the game. That's a huge game
- 51:38Speaker 2: changing play. I'm going with the higher percentage. I'm just
- 51:41Speaker 2: kicking a damn field goal, right? Because even if you
- 51:43Speaker 2: don't muff that punt, things have to happen.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Oh, they're gay.
- 51:47Speaker 3: Can I pick, can I pick three? The three times
- 51:52Speaker 3: we should have kicked a field goal last year.
- 51:54Speaker 2: This one from Andrew Barton. Ohio State went for it
- 51:57Speaker 2: on fourth down in the Rose Bowl. Youths were up
- 51:59Speaker 2: 14-0 at the time. If we stopped them on that play,
- 52:01Speaker 2: who knows?
- 52:02Speaker 1: You know what?
- 52:03Speaker 2: I've said this over the years, and I'll say it again.
- 52:06Speaker 2: If Utah just on one of the kickoffs.
- 52:10Speaker 1: After they scored.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Just one of the kickoffs gets like a.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Touchback or doesn't allow Ohio state to return it to
- 52:18Speaker 2: damn midfield. Then maybe the game is different because.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Coverage in that game was terrible.
- 52:25Speaker 3: Speaker 0 7, or do you, or do you use
- 52:27Speaker 3: the Mulligan on your cornerback injuries leading into the Rose bowl?
- 52:31Speaker 3: So you didn't have a guy after having a guy Bernard.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Play the corner, maybe that whatever, whatever moment happened so
- 52:38Speaker 2: that your corners, one of them.
- 52:39Speaker 1: Gets to stay healthy. You know what? One more.
- 52:42Speaker 2: How about you just don't make McKay Bernard play special
- 52:45Speaker 2: teams in that game. Like be like, okay, you're playing
- 52:48Speaker 2: offense and defense. No special teams for you for Mackay.
- 52:52Speaker 2: He was cramping and dying after that game was over.
- 52:54Speaker 3: He had a great, even with all that had that
- 52:57Speaker 3: incredible touchdown on the wheel route.
- 53:00Speaker 4: I think that put Utah up 14, nothing.
- 53:02Speaker 2: The back to Harleen play Kalen clay, dropping the ball
- 53:04Speaker 2: before the goal line versus Oregon.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Mulligan on that play the infamous Kalen clay play.
- 53:12Speaker 2: The interception that didn't happen on the, on the BYU
- 53:17Speaker 2: loss F before the rant.
- 53:19Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 53:19Speaker 1: That's the one that's cam Calhoun. He just, it goes
- 53:22Speaker 1: through his fingertips.
- 53:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:24Speaker 1: And after that stupid penalty.
- 53:26Speaker 3: Call is cause as much as you hate that penalty,
- 53:31Speaker 3: if you're a Utah football fan and you love it,
- 53:34Speaker 3: if you're a BYU fan, you have to admit that
- 53:37Speaker 3: it was at least close, right? And if it's close,
- 53:40Speaker 3: then you can't be, you can't go.
- 53:44Speaker 1: Well, I guess it can't be called.
- 53:47Speaker 2: I feel like you're walking in a line of, I
- 53:49Speaker 2: know you're expecting fans to be reasonable.
- 53:51Speaker 1: You're right. And especially in rivalry games, you're not going
- 53:54Speaker 1: to get it. You're just not going to get it.
- 53:55Speaker 3: So, so the interception for me is a bigger deal.
- 53:58Speaker 2: The interception that you missed or you know what, how about,
- 54:02Speaker 2: how about just, one of the plays you make a big,
- 54:06Speaker 2: big defensive play because yes, Utah fans are fixated on
- 54:12Speaker 2: that penalty extending the drive.
- 54:14Speaker 1: They still had to drive down.
- 54:16Speaker 3: They, yeah, they, from like the 10 yard line or somewhere, they.
- 54:20Speaker 2: Drove the whole field and won the game because like
- 54:24Speaker 2: all the, you know, it took the, the momentum away.
- 54:28Speaker 1: It popped the, you know, the balloon for you. Okay. Well,
- 54:33Speaker 1: You had six more chances to go win that game.
- 54:36Speaker 3: And it's, and Red's off was clutch that year for BYU.
- 54:41Speaker 3: No doubt about that, but it's, but like, that's a
- 54:43Speaker 3: quarterback that you can make a play against. That wasn't,
- 54:47Speaker 3: that wasn't anywhere close to the best quarterback ever. BYU
- 54:51Speaker 3: has had even in recent years, as far as a
- 54:53Speaker 3: skill standpoint. And yet you still let him March down
- 54:56Speaker 3: the field, which is why the penalty was so hard
- 54:58Speaker 3: for Utah fans. Cause you did make a play on
- 55:00Speaker 3: the quarterback. You wrangle him, you tackle him, you sack him.
- 55:03Speaker 4: I'm sure I've seen the text.
- 55:05Speaker 2: We did make a play. You made a play on him.
- 55:07Speaker 2: And then the referees gave the Mulligan still less painful.
- 55:11Speaker 2: If I'm being honest, still less painful. of a Mulligan
- 55:15Speaker 2: than the one offered to Michigan. If you're through the
- 55:17Speaker 2: Western Michigan lands, the game is over. I'm sure you
- 55:21Speaker 2: saw that hilarious tweet. It was like NCAA teams until
- 55:24Speaker 2: this weekend were 186,000 and zero when time, when leading
- 55:28Speaker 2: zero time expires and like.
- 55:31Speaker 1: For the first time, they're like, nah, I'll put some
- 55:33Speaker 1: time back on that thing. Let them try again. And one,
- 55:35Speaker 1: let me.
- 55:38Speaker 3: Let me give you a couple just because I'm thinking
- 55:41Speaker 3: as an Ohio State fan, too. You had the big
- 55:46Speaker 3: one for me is missed field goals against Michigan two
- 55:52Speaker 3: years ago. Like you lose 13 to 10 at home
- 55:55Speaker 3: on a year that you end up winning the national championship.
- 55:57Speaker 3: But that's like you make two of those three field
- 55:59Speaker 3: goals you miss. You win the game. And that's the
- 56:02Speaker 3: rivalry game. So that's the biggest one. The other one
- 56:05Speaker 3: is I was telling you about this one. Jeff Okuda
- 56:08Speaker 3: had a fumble, a forced fumble in the Clemson college
- 56:15Speaker 3: football playoff game from 2019, the year that Joe Burrow
- 56:18Speaker 3: and LSU won the national championship.
- 56:21Speaker 4: Scoop and score.
- 56:22Speaker 3: They go to review inexplicably. They call it an incomplete pass.
- 56:27Speaker 3: The guy took like three steps with the ball in control.
- 56:31Speaker 3: And yet they call it incomplete pass wipes away the touchdown.
- 56:34Speaker 1: They lose by one score.
- 56:35Speaker 4: Those are probably the two for me as an Ohio
- 56:37Speaker 4: State fan.
- 56:38Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I fell asleep while you're talking about Ohio
- 56:40Speaker 1: State stuff. I mean, I'm sorry.
- 56:43Speaker 3: Is it not very exciting for you that a team
- 56:46Speaker 3: playing in an actual college football playoff game gets a mulligan,
- 56:49Speaker 3: not just regular season games?
- 56:51Speaker 8: Is that not exciting?
- 56:52Speaker 2: I fell asleep because, you know, it's the Buckeyes, which
- 56:54Speaker 2: none of us care about. This is a good one
- 56:56Speaker 2: from Cal. The penalty that erased Utah's first touchdown against
- 57:01Speaker 2: Texas Tech last year. That one was extra painful because
- 57:05Speaker 2: it was Spencer Fano, illegal man downfield.
- 57:08Speaker 1: Jackson Benny would be touchdown, yep.
- 57:11Speaker 2: That sucked because it was your best player who took
- 57:15Speaker 2: the touchdown away.
- 57:20Speaker 3: And that probably would have changed things a whole lot.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Even though the final score ended up being... they beat
- 57:26Speaker 3: you by three scores, that's so early in the game,
- 57:29Speaker 3: that probably changes things in a huge way.
- 57:33Speaker 1: You never know. All right, you know what?
- 57:36Speaker 2: We're going to ask Jerem Jordan this question, but he'll
- 57:39Speaker 2: have an answer through the BYU lens. A little red
- 57:42Speaker 2: and blue next on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700
- 57:44Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM.
- 57:45Speaker 1: I see who you are.
- 57:48Speaker 4: You are my enemy.
- 57:50Speaker 6: My father taught me many things.
- 57:51Speaker 5: You know what they say.
- 57:53Speaker 6: He taught me.
- 57:54Speaker 4: Keep your friends close, but your enemies close.
- 57:58Speaker 1: Time to check in on the team down south. They
- 58:00Speaker 1: have done absolutely nothing wrong, but they're blue. This is
- 58:03Speaker 1: the Red and Blue on.
- 58:05Speaker 5: The Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number one sports talk.
- 58:08Speaker 1: ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 58:09Speaker 5: You are my enemy. You are my enemy.
- 58:12Speaker 4: You are my enemy.
- 58:17Speaker 1: This ends now.
- 58:22Speaker 7: Time for a little red and blue here on the
- 58:23Speaker 7: Sean O'Connell Show.
- 58:24Speaker 2: We check in on the team down south with our
- 58:26Speaker 2: good friend Jerem Jordan. This conversation brought to you every
- 58:30Speaker 2: week by Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn. They've got some good
- 58:33Speaker 2: things going on down there right now, including $ 8, 000 off
- 58:37Speaker 2: MSRP on the 2026 Super Duty trucks.
- 58:42Speaker 1: If you're looking for an F-150 Lariat, up to $ 10, 000 off.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Tell them OC sent you when you head down to
- 58:49Speaker 2: 985 West Summit Ridge Parkway in Santa Quinn. It is
- 58:53Speaker 2: worth the trip for that kind of savings. Jerem Jordan,
- 58:57Speaker 2: welcome to the show.
- 58:58Speaker 1: How are you, sir?
- 58:58Speaker 8: FCS wins are boring. On to the next ones. Very
- 59:06Speaker 8: excited about it, but it was good to be back
- 59:08Speaker 8: with 60,000 of my closest friends. Saturday. So, yeah, I
- 59:11Speaker 8: can't wait. Utah's got a big game with the Razorbacks.
- 59:13Speaker 8: The Georgia starts conference play with Arizona out of the gate.
- 59:16Speaker 8: Let's go.
- 59:17Speaker 2: You know what makes FCS wins a lot more interesting?
- 59:21Speaker 2: When certain contingents of certain fan bases get into very
- 59:26Speaker 2: heated arguments about which FCS win is more impressive. I
- 59:32Speaker 2: am encouraged by the fact that rivalry talk is already
- 59:36Speaker 2: in full swing, and we're only in week one.
- 59:39Speaker 8: Yeah, and we're going to have plenty of it leading
- 59:41Speaker 8: up to November 7th, which is great. Can't wait, man. Yeah,
- 59:45Speaker 8: I think everyone should be excited about everything. I mean,
- 59:48Speaker 8: it's great. High school football going. My 8-year-old's playing tackle
- 59:51Speaker 8: football for the first year. I'm the OC. We put
- 59:54Speaker 8: up four touchdowns, a season high on Saturday, and a
- 59:56Speaker 8: loss to Mountain View, you know, for a second-grade team. But, hey,
- 59:59Speaker 8: Daniel Sorensen's kid was on the other side. I was like, yeah,
- 1:00:02Speaker 8: I don't know if we can hang with those genetics. But, yeah,
- 1:00:06Speaker 8: I'm glad football's back, man. Seahawks play tomorrow. Niners play on, what, Friday, Thursday, whatever.
- 1:00:11Speaker 8: Who knows in Australia, but can't wait, man.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: Let's talk about the positive and negative takeaways, if there
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: are any negatives, from a 63-7 victory for BYU. Bear Bachmeier,
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: clean game for him, 16-20, almost 200 yards, three touchdowns,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: no interceptions. BYU ran the ball very effectively, 308 yards
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: on the ground, 213 yards through the air.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: What did you like best out of what you saw?
- 1:00:42Speaker 8: Loved, yeah, how clean BYU was. Loved Legend Glasker. Scored
- 1:00:48Speaker 8: two touchdowns in the first two touches. Five touches, 18
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: a touch, three touchdowns among the five. That was nice.
- 1:00:56Speaker 8: He did it in different ways. A jet sweep, a
- 1:00:58Speaker 8: bubble screen, and then a deep ball. And the dude
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: can play, man. Bessie Satake said in spring, hey, Legend's good.
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: And we were like, whoa, he's saying this about a
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: true freshman. I don't know how he was a three-star.
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: That's my biggest thing. I was like, how is he
- 1:01:10Speaker 8: a three-star? Like, this dude plays like a four- or five-star. So, yeah, 6'1,
- 1:01:14Speaker 8: like 175, kind of fly guy, Isaiah Glasker's cousin. He
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: was awesome. Very defensively, gets a pick on the first
- 1:01:20Speaker 8: defensive snap of the season, Trey Alexander. Evan Johnson had
- 1:01:24Speaker 8: a pick later. Matthias Leach, backup corner, had a pick.
- 1:01:27Speaker 8: So that was great. Like, LJ didn't find the end zone,
- 1:01:30Speaker 8: but he was almost eight yards per carry. But one
- 1:01:33Speaker 8: of the big stories coming out was, you know, two
- 1:01:35Speaker 8: injuries of notes. In case you missed it, Raider Damuni
- 1:01:38Speaker 8: got hurt, and so did Sione Moa. Luckily, neither are
- 1:01:43Speaker 8: as long as maybe they thought, especially with Raider. They
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: thought it might be season-ending. Kelly Poppinga yesterday, BYU's defensive coordinator, said, hey,
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: maybe buy the Notre Dame game. So kind of giving
- 1:01:52Speaker 8: like a four- to six-week timeline there without the six
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: of the injury. Lower body, I guess. What is this, hockey?
- 1:01:58Speaker 8: And then Sione Moa, BYU's RB2, came out with an
- 1:02:02Speaker 8: apparent knee injury and Sounds like it's not as serious
- 1:02:05Speaker 8: with him, too. So maybe four to six weeks there,
- 1:02:07Speaker 8: it sounds like, potentially. So hopefully these guys can get
- 1:02:11Speaker 8: back as soon as humanly possible. Because Bureau does have
- 1:02:13Speaker 8: decent backups behind them. But you go into the season thinking, hey, Raiders,
- 1:02:17Speaker 8: you're starting strong safety there. And then Sione Moas, Kenny Arby, too.
- 1:02:21Speaker 8: You're 1B. So Sione's been banged up each of the
- 1:02:24Speaker 8: three years he's been here. So that's a bummer.
- 1:02:28Speaker 10: You can check.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: What do you expect against Arizona?
- 1:02:31Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: You hit the ground running now with a really important game.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: I mean, Utah has got a much tougher matchup coming
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: off an FCS win than they had last week in Arkansas.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: I think Arizona is a better team than Arkansas is.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: And also this one means something. This one is a
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: conference game.
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: This is what is against a conference opponent.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: So it's, it's a big leap in week two. What
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: do you think it looks like for BYU?
- 1:02:57Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it's the third toughest game on BYU's schedule.
- 1:03:00Speaker 8: To me, I'm seeing Notre Dame, I'm seeing that Utah,
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: and then I'm seeing Arizona. It's tough because, one, Arizona's good.
- 1:03:05Speaker 8: Nine-win team last year. They've turned the first team all-Big
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: 12 quarterback, no FIDA. And then two, it's a conference
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: game in week two, so the stakes are high. Frankly,
- 1:03:14Speaker 8: whoever loses this game probably won't make the Big 12
- 1:03:16Speaker 8: title game because I believe the two teams that match
- 1:03:20Speaker 8: up there will either be undefeated or have max one loss.
- 1:03:22Speaker 8: I don't think we'll have a two-loss team there. Maybe
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: we will. You know, tiebreakers, who knows? But probably not.
- 1:03:27Speaker 11: So.
- 1:03:28Speaker 8: you're behind the eight ball out of the gate. And
- 1:03:30Speaker 8: this is a, this is a matchup that last year
- 1:03:32Speaker 8: went to double OT. BYU was down 10 with five
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: minutes left and won that game in double OT. That
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: was miraculous. BYU had to have some real good plays
- 1:03:42Speaker 8: to come back in that one. In fact, Bear Bachmeier
- 1:03:44Speaker 8: fumbled inside the 10 last year late in the game.
- 1:03:47Speaker 8: And one of BYU's offensive linemen, Kyle Soparcho, jumped on it.
- 1:03:50Speaker 8: That was a massive moment to save what ended up
- 1:03:54Speaker 8: being a great season for BYU. And so, yeah, it's huge.
- 1:03:58Speaker 8: Arizona lost four dudes to the NFL, three picks, from
- 1:04:03Speaker 8: the secondary. So Danny Gonzalez has those boys playing good defense.
- 1:04:07Speaker 8: They feel like they've replaced some of them. They got
- 1:04:09Speaker 8: some good portal dudes. They've got a good offense for
- 1:04:11Speaker 8: you to get the ball out super quick. Chris Hunter,
- 1:04:13Speaker 8: Trey Spivey are some of the best wide receivers in
- 1:04:16Speaker 8: the league. So I, it's a very intriguing matchup. It's
- 1:04:19Speaker 8: the same thing it was two years ago. It's on
- 1:04:21Speaker 8: Fox middle of the afternoon. And yeah, I, I, I
- 1:04:25Speaker 8: can't wait for this. I think it's just a huge game.
- 1:04:28Speaker 8: Brett Brennan said some interesting comments yesterday about, Hey yeah.
- 1:04:32Speaker 8: Like what's, what's in 24 BYU did not, that crowd
- 1:04:36Speaker 8: did not affect us a ton. And so the BYU
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: fans are kind of taken out personally. So I think
- 1:04:41Speaker 8: it'll be even louder than it normally is, which is fun.
- 1:04:43Speaker 8: But Brett Brennan is a good dude. Like he he's
- 1:04:45Speaker 8: not like passive aggressive. I really enjoy him and respect him,
- 1:04:49Speaker 8: but I think it's going to be a really good matchup.
- 1:04:51Speaker 8: And I think it could be high scoring, but I
- 1:04:52Speaker 8: do feel very confident in BYU defense. I just think,
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: Cougars are going to be able to run the ball,
- 1:04:57Speaker 8: and they're going to pick off Noah Fita. They'll get
- 1:04:59Speaker 8: some fumbles. So I have BYU winning by double digits
- 1:05:02Speaker 8: in this one.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: So I was going to ask you about the defense,
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: because obviously that is the big change for a team
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: that otherwise stayed relatively constant over the offseason. Jay Hill
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: is now in Michigan. We'll get to that conversation in
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: just a second. But it's hard to judge, I think,
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: even more what your defense is against a Utah Tech
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: than to judge what your offense is, right? Because you
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: can look and say, all right, that's a clean execution
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: of an orchestrated play by an offense, and maybe it
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: will be cleaner or less clean if the competition is bigger, stronger, faster. But,
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: all right, we know what the offense is supposed to
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: look like. Defense, it's like, I mean, it's really hard
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: to figure out. We come away from Utah beating Idaho,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: and a lot of folks are like, well, hold on
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: a minute. Idaho put a drive together, so that stinks.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: But also, it didn't change the outcome of the game
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: in any way. Also, what's this? Only one sack. And
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: you're like, well, yeah, I don't know. You should have
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: more sacks against an offensive line like that, but neither
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: BYU or Utah is able to do it. So how
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: are we grading out and judging these defensive performances against
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: the inferior competition?
- 1:06:14Speaker 8: I think in modern football, especially with sacks, the ball
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: just comes out quick. Teams are just like, they're not
- 1:06:19Speaker 8: just five steps, seven step drop, giving you a chance
- 1:06:23Speaker 8: to really get out to the quarterback. And frankly, sometimes
- 1:06:26Speaker 8: that ball comes out, you don't get a sack and
- 1:06:28Speaker 8: then you pick off a pass. You had three picks.
- 1:06:30Speaker 8: I would say that was pretty good. And then they
- 1:06:32Speaker 8: forced the fumble as well and got one. So four
- 1:06:35Speaker 8: takeaways and less than 200 yards. That was the first
- 1:06:38Speaker 8: time since 96, BYU had one of those games. That's crazy.
- 1:06:42Speaker 8: Think of all the games, 30 years, under 200 yards,
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: four takeaways. That was good. So I thought it was
- 1:06:48Speaker 8: very good. Yeah, like both teams gave up on drive. Whatever,
- 1:06:52Speaker 8: you got your two and threes, and it's not big,
- 1:06:53Speaker 8: doesn't it?
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: I was asking this question through the Utah lens relative
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: to what happened with Michigan. If you could get a mulligan,
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: you get one second back, you get to do a
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: game-deciding play over.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Any play in BYU football history.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: We got some great responses from the listeners on the
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: Utah front. What would that play be for BYU?
- 1:07:17Speaker 8: 2016 at Utah, two-point conversion. So Jamal Williams gets hurt,
- 1:07:24Speaker 8: and he's not in on the play, and that really
- 1:07:25Speaker 8: affected things. Just the fake to whoever it was that
- 1:07:29Speaker 8: was in for him, just no one bit. And so
- 1:07:32Speaker 8: just take some... you know, one on two would have
- 1:07:35Speaker 8: loved sort of a different scenario there. Cause yeah, go
- 1:07:38Speaker 8: and going for it. There was pretty aggressive. It's client stock.
- 1:07:42Speaker 8: It's for season is on the road. It's early in
- 1:07:44Speaker 8: the year. Would have loved like a better play. I'll
- 1:07:46Speaker 8: don't hate, I guess the call. I just would take
- 1:07:49Speaker 8: some Hill would love to like get him in a
- 1:07:51Speaker 8: little more space there and opportunity to kind of get
- 1:07:53Speaker 8: up and go. But yeah, that's one that, you know,
- 1:07:56Speaker 8: you can pick your, pick your field goal miss, I
- 1:07:58Speaker 8: guess what 10 and 12 as well. So, Yeah, there
- 1:08:04Speaker 8: are a few moments there. And there are a few
- 1:08:07Speaker 8: I would actually want to watch again. I love the
- 1:08:11Speaker 8: question I see. So like, you know, different movie stars
- 1:08:14Speaker 8: like what movie do you wish you could watch for
- 1:08:16Speaker 8: the first time again? It's like there are all kinds
- 1:08:18Speaker 8: of plays, you know, on both sides of this rivalry
- 1:08:21Speaker 8: where you're like, oh, can I watch that play for
- 1:08:23Speaker 8: the first time again? I mean, that was amazing.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: It's interesting because you can you can find where a
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: Utah fans priorities lie, whether they respond with something related
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: to the BYU rivalry or. or something like a Rose
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: Bowl or a Pac-12 championship type play, right?
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Because there's both of those on the Utah side of things.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: I think that most BYU fans, it would primarily be
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: rivalry stuff.
- 1:08:49Speaker 8: I would think so. You know, there have been a
- 1:08:51Speaker 8: few moments there. You know, BYU-Notre Dame in 22, there
- 1:08:54Speaker 8: are a couple plays there where you feel like, hey,
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: it may go a different way, and that could have
- 1:08:57Speaker 8: been a different one. I will. It came to me. Okay.
- 1:09:01Speaker 8: When BYU 2012 played at Notre Dame, that's the big
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: man title year. They're undefeated. There was a fourth down
- 1:09:07Speaker 8: where Riley Nelson has Cody hopping over the middle and just.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Doesn't wide open wide open.
- 1:09:12Speaker 8: It's real tough. Riley's my boy. I love, I love Riley.
- 1:09:15Speaker 8: He's great. But that one, that one was tough. Like that,
- 1:09:18Speaker 8: like if BYU had BYU, Blown-up Notre Dame season, that
- 1:09:21Speaker 8: would have been one of the biggest wins in program history.
- 1:09:23Speaker 8: That would have been massive. So, yeah, that's one, too,
- 1:09:25Speaker 8: that I'm like, mm, that play.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: I was at that game, and I grew up a
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: Notre Dame fan, and I'm in the press box biting
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: my tongue on everything because it was a lot closer
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: than it needed to be, right? And that play absolutely was,
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: if he hits that pass, it's a game-decider.
- 1:09:45Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:09:46Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: That was a big moment.
- 1:09:49Speaker 8: That was an interesting time, too, for BYU. It's like
- 1:09:51Speaker 8: second year of independence, trying to carve out, like, what
- 1:09:54Speaker 8: is this? How does this work? They get Notre Dame.
- 1:09:58Speaker 8: They're there, and they compete really well. There's a lot
- 1:10:00Speaker 8: of NFL talent on that 12 team for BYU. Taysom Hall,
- 1:10:05Speaker 8: Jamal Williams, a bunch of guys on defense. Kyle Vannoy,
- 1:10:09Speaker 8: Daniel Sorensen, and so on and so forth, a bunch
- 1:10:11Speaker 8: of backers. They were right there. That would have helped
- 1:10:14Speaker 8: kind of validate, like, independence can kind of work here,
- 1:10:17Speaker 8: you know? And BYU never really had that one year
- 1:10:19Speaker 8: where it was like, hey, they did it. 2014 was
- 1:10:21Speaker 8: kind of going to be that year, but didn't end
- 1:10:23Speaker 8: up being it. And luckily, you know, BYU joined the
- 1:10:26Speaker 8: Big 12 four years ago.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: Let's talk about the national landscape.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: Let's talk about one of the wildest, most controversial, most
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: insane things we have seen in recent history. And that
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: obviously has a lot of Utah ties, obviously. Western Michigan
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: deserves to win a game at the big house against Michigan.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: It would have been nearly on par with an Appalachian
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: State upset, even though Western Michigan is a far better
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: team than App State and a far better program than
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: App State. But just the stage was set, and it
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: looked like time expired. And even if it hadn't expired,
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: that was, I mean... The final play of the game,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Bryce Underwood, who's supposed to be Mr. All Everything, chucking
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: that one out of the back of the end zone
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: was just like, oh, my gosh.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: And then they review, and they say, just kidding.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: The clock you see on TV and in the stadium
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: is not the real clock.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: There's a second left. Let's do this again. What was
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: your reaction to that?
- 1:11:26Speaker 8: It made me upset for Western Michigan, honestly, because they
- 1:11:29Speaker 8: were robbed. We all know it. So we learned a
- 1:11:32Speaker 8: few things here. One, the officials in the stadium weren't
- 1:11:35Speaker 8: the one that made that decision. It was the replay center.
- 1:11:37Speaker 8: And then Mike Ferreira of Fox said, hey, they said
- 1:11:41Speaker 8: if anything's in doubt, you've got to lean on the
- 1:11:44Speaker 8: TV broadcast. Now let me give you a peek behind
- 1:11:46Speaker 8: the curtain working in television. That clock that they showed
- 1:11:50Speaker 8: on TV in the lower left, They put a camera
- 1:11:53Speaker 8: pregame on the scoreboard just in case the digital connection
- 1:11:58Speaker 8: of their, like, Fox scoreboard goes out. Every TV production
- 1:12:02Speaker 8: does this. It's a backup. And you use that because
- 1:12:05Speaker 8: you want to see what's in the stadium. So that
- 1:12:06Speaker 8: when they said, oh, that was the TV one. No,
- 1:12:09Speaker 8: it was not. That was in the stadium. Like, that's
- 1:12:11Speaker 8: not correct. That was in the stadium. So what they
- 1:12:14Speaker 8: need to do is put tense on there like we
- 1:12:17Speaker 8: have in basketball.
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:12:18Speaker 8: Because I've seen multiple people record the video and time it,
- 1:12:22Speaker 8: and there would have been something like 0.6 seconds left. Well,
- 1:12:25Speaker 8: okay then. Then we go, oh, yeah, that's 0.6 when
- 1:12:28Speaker 8: he touched it or whatever. We've seen multiple angles where
- 1:12:30Speaker 8: it looked like it was triple zeros, whatever. But if
- 1:12:33Speaker 8: we had tense, I think that would help. But, yeah,
- 1:12:35Speaker 8: just– it made me really bothered that Western Michigan just
- 1:12:38Speaker 8: got robbed by that. They also could have defended that
- 1:12:41Speaker 8: another hail Mary better. Like that was up to them,
- 1:12:44Speaker 8: but yeah, like Michigan gets away with it and they
- 1:12:46Speaker 8: dropped out of the top 25. I think people acknowledge
- 1:12:49Speaker 8: that it kind of got something they didn't deserve there.
- 1:12:52Speaker 8: So yeah, turmoil out of the gates, you know, with
- 1:12:55Speaker 8: all the Utah connected guys and, you know, the Underwood
- 1:12:58Speaker 8: A's are started, but it's not infinite. It's like Utah
- 1:13:01Speaker 8: fans have been here before with the quarterback, right? So it's, yeah,
- 1:13:04Speaker 8: it's all pretty interesting to watch from a distance.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: Is there any value from a conference perspective? Like Smith
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: Snowden was probably Michigan's best defensive player in that game,
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: which maybe wasn't saying much.
- 1:13:17Speaker 5: J.J.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: Buchanan was definitely their best offensive player. In that game.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: And as a conference, certainly for the University of Utah,
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: there's this insecurity. But as a conference, there's this insecurity like, oh,
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: our guys couldn't be as good at that level. I
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: looked at the most recent... NFL mock draft has zero
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: big 12 guys in the first round.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: And I don't think that's how it's going to play out, but.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: There's this sort of like persistent disrespect for the level
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: of talent out here. And then you take those same
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: human beings, you put them in Michigan uniforms and they're
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: the best ones on that Michigan team. At least one
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: bad game by Michigan. Can we infer anything from that?
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: Should it be talked about someday? Cause it's not going
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: to be on the tails of that controversy.
- 1:14:03Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't think so. You know, and it's early
- 1:14:05Speaker 8: for the marks and whatnot. A lot can happen. No, yeah,
- 1:14:09Speaker 8: everyone's trying to, everyone's love language is somewhat of validation, right?
- 1:14:13Speaker 8: We all always, we all want to feel validated. Not really.
- 1:14:16Speaker 8: I mean, granted, like when Keelan Marion went to Miami,
- 1:14:19Speaker 8: we were like happy for him. Like, hey, that's awesome, man.
- 1:14:22Speaker 8: You had a great season, went to the national championship game.
- 1:14:24Speaker 8: That's great. Yeah. I am tired of the, Oh yeah,
- 1:14:27Speaker 8: you just, they have certain colors and certain logos. Therefore
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: they're suddenly better. It's like, no, they're pretty similar player.
- 1:14:33Speaker 8: They just get it kind of a bigger spotlight.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Certainly.
- 1:14:35Speaker 8: But as it pertains to the NFL and the NFL draft,
- 1:14:39Speaker 8: that talent can come from just about anywhere. Does it
- 1:14:41Speaker 8: typically come more from the SEC and then the big 10?
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: Well, sure.
- 1:14:45Speaker 8: But yeah, you gotta, you gotta just play well in
- 1:14:48Speaker 8: that spot. And, It can be kind of annoying. BYU
- 1:14:51Speaker 8: feels like they get the disrespect in recruiting rankings with
- 1:14:54Speaker 8: that sometimes. Ultimately, just recruit guys that fit your program, win,
- 1:15:00Speaker 8: and then everyone gets rewarded in some way.
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: I think we finally, the AP has given us a
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: judgment on which FCS win was more impressive. Because Utah
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: moved up in the rankings and BYU moved down in
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: the rankings.
- 1:15:15Speaker 8: Therefore, yeah. Spencer and I talked about this on BYU
- 1:15:20Speaker 8: Sports Nation. They were like, where do we think BYU
- 1:15:22Speaker 8: is going to be? And we both said, they're going
- 1:15:24Speaker 8: to be 15. They're going to reward USC for playing
- 1:15:27Speaker 8: two games and two group six games.
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: Team.
- 1:15:30Speaker 8: So it's all good. They're at 15, like keep winning.
- 1:15:33Speaker 8: You'll be in a decent position. If Arizona beats BYU,
- 1:15:36Speaker 8: they should climb in the top 25, but I do
- 1:15:38Speaker 8: feel like, you know, BYU is going to be there and,
- 1:15:41Speaker 8: and Utah, you know, up a spot, Houston up a spot,
- 1:15:45Speaker 8: which I was a little surprised by. They didn't look
- 1:15:47Speaker 8: great against Oregon state and then Texas tech kind of
- 1:15:51Speaker 8: hold serve. So Yeah, right there. So, yeah, LSU looked
- 1:15:56Speaker 8: really good. I liked Ole Miss getting the only ranked
- 1:15:59Speaker 8: win in college football so far. So, not a lot
- 1:16:01Speaker 8: of movers and shakers. Oregon penalized heavily for playing closely
- 1:16:04Speaker 8: with Boise State. They dropped four spots. So, it's early.
- 1:16:08Speaker 8: I think it should be volatile early, honestly. Like, everything
- 1:16:11Speaker 8: should swing wildly early, and then as you get more
- 1:16:14Speaker 8: data points, you can kind of level that out.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: 100%, because the initial rankings are– Pure guesses.
- 1:16:21Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Absolutely, we should get a lot of variance in these
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: first few weeks.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: But just for all you Utah fans out there, the
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: tribe has spoken, and your win was better than BYU's win.
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: All right?
- 1:16:33Speaker 8: Yeah, and ignore the coaches' focus. Who cares about that?
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: Jeremy, you're the man.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Enjoy this Arizona game. I'm looking forward to it myself,
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: and we'll chat again next week.
- 1:16:42Speaker 8: It's going to be a ton of fun. Yeah, and
- 1:16:45Speaker 8: Utah Arkansas will keep an eye on that as well.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: Thanks, Sean.
- 1:16:47Speaker 8: Appreciate it, man.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: That's Jeremy Jordan.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: Red and blue brought to you by our friends at

- 1:17:30Speaker 2: is going deep on some conspiracy theories. We'll see where
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: James and all of you stand on his conspiracy theory
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: beliefs next. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM.
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: It's the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the best
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC from
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: Utah to the SEC is something you're probably never going
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: to hear as an actual headline, but... The SEC has
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: requested a temporary restraining order against LSU that would clear
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: the way for a vote Thursday, as in this Thursday,
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: that could expel LSU from the Southeastern Conference. We have
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: had now, I don't even know how many back and
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: forth overtures from the SEC and Other conferences, but specifically
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: the SEC and LSU, one of their member institutions. Lane
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Kiffin has pro players on his roster. former pro players
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: on his roster and then the SEC says no you
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: can't play those it's in our bylaws LSU gets an
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: injunction that says well you can't enforce those bylaws it's
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: criminal for you to do so the SEC then goes
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: out and this is like game week this is the
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: day before a game is being played The SEC comes
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: out and says, well, hold on. We have a judge
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: that says that you as a judge are incorrect, so
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: our judge is more powerful than your judge. So as
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: it stands right now, or as it stands as far
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: as kickoff of an LSU game where they look great,
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: they demolished their opponent. Lane Kiffin appears to be preserving
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: two roster spots for the guys that were former Zabian
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: Harris and the other guy that were in the pro camps.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: But not actually putting them on the roster until this
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: thing is resolved. And the SEC is like, well, hold
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: on a minute. What we've decided we're going to do
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: is we're going to hold a vote on whether or not,
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: if you don't want to play by our conference rules,
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: whether we want you to be in our conference in
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: the first place. If you're going to seek injunctions against
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: conference rules that everyone else in the conference agrees to,
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: because Lane Kiffin wants ex NFL players on his roster,
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: then maybe we don't need LSU to be part of
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: this Southeastern conference.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: It's all blustering.
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: It's all peacocks waving their feathers around, but it is happening.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: And I guess potentially the sec could vote to kick
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: LSU out of the sec. In that case, LSU would,
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: get scooped up by the big 10, presumably, or they
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: would be an independent temporarily until the next round of realignment.
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: LSU feels like the kind of team that could survive independence.
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: They've got pretty sincere fan base. They've got a lot
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: of support. They have apparently tons of money, at least
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: to spend on football. If you're sitting there, if you're
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: at LSU and like LSU gymnastics, really good LSU baseball,
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: really good. LSU basketball, pretty darn good. Depending on the year,
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: LSU women's basketball, big money. You might all be sitting
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: there just.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: Be like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. We want
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: to remain in.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: The sec and the sec could be, could be kicking
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: your university out based on lane Kiffin, basically.
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: Pretty crazy stuff. I mean, par for the course for
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: Lake Kiffin, right? To be embroiled in controversy like this
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: is so on brand for him, even if. I mean,
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: the courts are saying whether he's there are disagreeing whether
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: he's right or not on this. Obviously, the conference thinks
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: he's wrong. A lot of us in court of public
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: opinion think he's wrong. But even when he may not
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: technically be wrong about something, O.C., it's still controversial.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: Like, that's just that's how he works.
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: Speaking of injunctions and lawsuits and all the stuff that
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: we got sick of talking about during the summer, so
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: I'm doing bad radio, bringing it up again. Did you
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: see that the Big 12 Conference has dropped its lawsuit
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: against Texas Tech?
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: I did see that.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: And they had a lawsuit against Texas Tech basically seeking
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: the right to enforce their own rules in the Brendan
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: Sorsby situation. Now, Brendan Sorsby is not At Texas Tech.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: He's not enrolled at Texas Tech anymore, as far as
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: we know. So you're probably just saving legal fees by
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: dropping this lawsuit. But maybe, just maybe, Brett, your marketing
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: company saw Texas Tech and were just.
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: Like, yeah, they need Brendan Sorsby.
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: They need Brendan Sorsby the same way Kyle Whittingham needs
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: an extra second on the clock. So let's drop this
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: lawsuit and they can bring Sorsby back. I don't think
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: that's what's going on. This one is the most interesting
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: of all of these behind-the-scenes, legalese-type conversations. Here's a statement
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: from the MAC conference on what happened at the end
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: of the Western Michigan versus Michigan football game. They are
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: contesting that proper replay protocol was not followed. And that
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: resulted in one second being put on the clock, which
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: of course resulted in a successful completion for a touchdown
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: from Bryce Underwood to former J.J.
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: Buchanan. Here's a lengthy statement, but just bear with me here.
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: After further study and investigation, it is now evident that
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: replay protocol was not properly followed in determining whether time
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: remained on the game clock at the conclusion of the
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: Western Michigan versus Michigan football game. The established replay protocol
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: requires that the game clock displayed on the program feed
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: be used in determining whether time remained. Instead, the Big
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: Ten Conference replay crew relied upon the clock feed embedded
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: within the replay system. As a result, one second was
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: placed back on the game clock and an additional play
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: was awarded. This was not a judgment regarding the proper
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: amount of time placed on the clock. It was an
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: error in the application of the established replay protocol governing
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: this specific end of game timing situation. Had protocol been
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: properly followed, the program feed clock would have been used.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: No additional play would have been awarded and Western Michigan
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: would have won the game.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: As a result, the Mid-American Conference has submitted formal appeals
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: to the NCAA Oversight Committee and College Football Playoff. The
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: MAC is requesting that those bodies recognize Western Michigan as
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: the actual winner of the game for purposes of their
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: respective rankings, evaluations, and selection deliberations.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: So the MAC is asking the NCAA.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: And the college football playoff to vacate Kyle Whittingham's first
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: win as the head coach of Michigan. Because replay protocol
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: in the rule book apparently says you are supposed to
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: follow the visible clock, which was... the feed clock, which
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: was the one that was synced up with the strobe,
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: like Jerem Jordan was talking about. And none of us knew, well,
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: I shouldn't speak for all, but I certainly had no
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: idea that there were super secret secondary clocks behind the
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: scenes that were being used on replays. Now, it actually
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: makes more sense to me that the replay protocol have
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: its own clock. Like, Inside the little hood, there's a
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: clock in there. That should be the one that you
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: use because that should be the most accurate one. But
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: I also don't understand in this modern era of technology
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: where we have robots walking around and delivering Amazon packages,
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: why it's difficult to get those clocks to match up exactly.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: I also don't know why we don't have tenths of
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: seconds in the final minute of a half or a
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: quarter or a game in college football like we do
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: in college basketball.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I just feel like.
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: Why don't we have on NBC, ESPN, ABC, Fox, whatever
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: we're watching college football on, CBS, when they go to replay,
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: why aren't we seeing the feed that the refs are seeing?
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: That's my question, too. Why are we looking at an
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: unofficial clock? However synced up it's supposed to be, it's
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: still unofficial. And yet I I'm with you. The ref
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: should be seeing the official official clock fine under the,
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: under the replay hood. Why aren't we seeing that as
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: the public? Why aren't the analysts seeing that as they're
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: trying to give an informed opinion and thoughts on what's
- 1:27:16Speaker 3: happening in front of them in a replay? Why are
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: we relying on an unofficial clock in those, in those circumstances?
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: Like just put the clock that the refs are seeing.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: If they're, different.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: Also, if, if you have to work backwards on this
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: and we I've seen people do this, if you have
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: to work backwards, because there is some disagreement on game clock,
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: replay clock, whatever you could, if you wanted to see
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: exactly how much time is left when the ball is
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: snapped and just like using a different clock and independent clock,
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: see how long that play takes to run its course.
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: You determine there's nine seconds left. Now, as soon as
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: he snaps the ball, that's the start of the clock.
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: When somebody touches that ball out of bounds and that
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: stops the clock, how long did that take? If it
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: were 10 seconds, game was over. If we're eight and
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: a half seconds, give them the second, let them keep
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: their win, I guess. If we have to work backwards
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: on this, it's not like there's not ways we can
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: do it. We have the technology, people. But this one,
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: this is the Mac and Western Michigan contesting that proper
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: replay protocol was not used and that Michigan was given
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: an extra second. based on a rule that is inappropriately applied.
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: It's interesting.
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: They're not disputing that there probably was some time left,
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: half a second, whatever it really was. They're just disputing
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: the processed at which they came to the conclusion that
- 1:29:01Speaker 3: there should be a second left.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: So we'll see if.
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: It, by the time this gets ruled on, we'll all
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: be like, we don't care who won or lost that game.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: Well, that's the dumb part about all of this. If
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: you're Michigan, right?
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: You go beat Oklahoma and nobody cares what happened in
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: this game.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: You go lose.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: You look like you did against Western Michigan against Oklahoma.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: You're going to get boat raced. And now we're talking
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: about something completely different. So that's one thing that's great
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: about having games back is that these new cycles are
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: all seven days long. The, the only thing, and this
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: is why Western Michigan is filing this grievance or whatever
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: the term is. That's the real consequential thing here. Cause
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: if Western Michigan has an undefeated season, otherwise they could
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: be a playoff team. It should be a playoff team, but,
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: They're going to have one loss here. Maybe a different
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: group of six team gets put in ahead of them
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: because they actually went undefeated or whatever. So there's higher
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: stakes for Western Michigan than Michigan.
- 1:30:09Speaker 10: Probably.
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: I actually desperately hope that is the scenario we get
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: to at the end of the year, James, where Western
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: Michigan is a max champion.
- 1:30:17Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: And like, I don't know, Tulane or somebody is also
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: eligible for the college football playoff and the committee is
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: has to make a decision between Western Michigan and whoever
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: else it is, and then the committee has to have
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: this debate.
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: Like, hey, I think they actually beat Michigan, though. There
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: wasn't any time left.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: So we should give them credit for beating Michigan. And
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: the other half of the room is going to be like, no.
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: Scoreboard.
- 1:30:43Speaker 8: No.
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: Scoreboard.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: Look at the scoreboard, but not the scoreboard clock. Anyway,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: I hope that happens.
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: You thinking there actually wasn't time left is different from
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: there officially being time left. That debate would be fun
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: to follow if that ends up being the case.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: We've got to take a quick one. Jeff Schwartz is
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: going to join us to start off our number three.
- 1:31:08Speaker 7: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:31:20Speaker 5: the best youth football coverage. Here's OC from the Murdoch
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: Hour three of the Sean O'Connell Show on a Tuesday
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: that feels like a Monday because we had Labor Day weekend.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: We welcome in, as the NFL comes back in earnest
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: this week, former NFL offensive lineman, former Oregon Duck, longtime
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: co-host of mine, Jeff Schwartz.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Hey, Jeff.
- 1:31:47Speaker 6: How you doing, buddy?
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Doing good. Doing great.
- 1:31:50Speaker 6: You just got a nice big win the other day.
- 1:31:52Speaker 6: There we go. Starting off with a bang.
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: How come Oregon didn't do the same thing?
- 1:31:59Speaker 6: So I was, uh, at the game with my kids,
- 1:32:01Speaker 6: which was great. Um, and I was sitting and I,
- 1:32:03Speaker 6: they gave me nice seats and I was in the
- 1:32:05Speaker 6: box and, um, it was in the box with some important, uh, people.
- 1:32:09Speaker 6: And it was, there was a little bit of a,
- 1:32:12Speaker 6: it was, the box was a little bit quiet for
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: a couple of quarters. Um, But eventually, obviously... I never
- 1:32:18Speaker 6: felt like we'd lose. It was just kind of annoying.
- 1:32:22Speaker 6: Bill Conley gave us SP +, for those who don't know.
- 1:32:26Speaker 6: I'll talk about Bill a lot throughout the season. He
- 1:32:28Speaker 6: gave us a 98% chance to win after the game.
- 1:32:32Speaker 6: You double up someone in yardage, you get a good
- 1:32:36Speaker 6: chance to win the game. I think a theme of
- 1:32:39Speaker 6: the weekend, and it definitely played out in that game,
- 1:32:41Speaker 6: was just the officiating was atrocious this weekend. And they
- 1:32:45Speaker 6: didn't call kick-catch interference, and that led to Boise State
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: scoring immediately. They call that, and, you know, 7-7 game,
- 1:32:52Speaker 6: we have the ball. We just scored a touchdown. I
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: think we had forced three straight three outs. The game's
- 1:32:57Speaker 6: a lot different. You can't, to me, look, you call holding,
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: you don't call holding, look, whatever. You can't miss procedural stuff.
- 1:33:04Speaker 6: You can't miss stuff like that, Sean. It's always been
- 1:33:07Speaker 6: my thing about fishing. You know I've been very firm
- 1:33:09Speaker 6: on this. You just can't mess up, like, procedural stuff.
- 1:33:13Speaker 6: And stuff that's really black and white. Now, if you
- 1:33:15Speaker 6: don't want to call holding or pass interference, fine, whatever.
- 1:33:18Speaker 6: But you just can't mess up stuff that's pretty black
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: and white.
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: Okay, let me ask you, you played a lot more
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: years of football than most people do.
- 1:33:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: There's a difference between starting a game with a stiff test.
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: And look, I think Boise qualifies. I know that there's
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: a lot of people who want to say like, oh, yeah,
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: you're not in the power conference anymore.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: Oregon's supposed to be way better. Fine.
- 1:33:40Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: To me, there's a big difference between starting with a
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: real game versus having a practice game. I don't know
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: if there's any NFL opponents that count as practice games.
- 1:33:49Speaker 9: Really?
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: You do get actual preseason games there.
- 1:33:52Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: But like going back through your your whole career, can
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: you characterize for me the difference if you had notable
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: differences between like when you get the FCS opponent in
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: week one versus when you have to kick off? against
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: a program at least as good as Boise State or
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: like some of these other teams that in recent years
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: have played Ohio State week one or whatever?
- 1:34:13Speaker 6: I don't think we ever played. So we played Montana
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: once in week one. Otherwise, we went to Houston one year.
- 1:34:20Speaker 6: We played Stanford one year, oddly enough, and we played
- 1:34:24Speaker 6: Indiana and we lost 0-4 to Indiana. So we never
- 1:34:27Speaker 6: played like a real passy, I think, except play Montana
- 1:34:30Speaker 6: maybe one year. I think You just prepare for the
- 1:34:32Speaker 6: game the same way. You can't prepare for it a
- 1:34:35Speaker 6: different way. Now, obviously, the result is you get to
- 1:34:37Speaker 6: play young guys. I know Oregon was looking forward to
- 1:34:40Speaker 6: playing some young guys on the offensive line and some
- 1:34:41Speaker 6: other positions. I just didn't get a chance to do
- 1:34:43Speaker 6: that because week one was a tougher game than they imagined.
- 1:34:46Speaker 6: I don't think there's any right or wrong way to
- 1:34:49Speaker 6: do this. I mean, would you say Louisville or Ole
- 1:34:52Speaker 6: Miss felt like they started the season off too tough?
- 1:34:55Speaker 6: I don't think so. So I don't think there's a
- 1:34:58Speaker 6: right or wrong way to start the season. I think
- 1:34:59Speaker 6: that you prepare the same way. There's a little less
- 1:35:02Speaker 6: stress when you're playing Idaho than when you're playing someone
- 1:35:07Speaker 6: who's better, but I don't think that you prepare differently
- 1:35:09Speaker 6: as a player.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: I'm glad you brought up the Idaho thing.
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: We're talking about a Utah offensive line that, look, ultimately
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: you demolished Idaho, but we're still saying, hold on a minute,
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: our offensive line should have been pushing them around at will.
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: Our defensive line should have had four sacks and eight
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: tackles for loss against an Idaho team that just doesn't
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: have the same level of player. That oversimplifies the whole
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: thing that's disrespectful to the guys that, yes, it's a
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: slightly lower level of football, but, I mean, they're playing
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: their best, especially now that the transfer portal.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: is a reality and things like that.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: When you did play the guys from, you know, a
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: lower level school or even in conference school that didn't
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: have the same level of guy, like what is the difference?
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: What is it?
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: Well, you're an Oregon starting offensive lineman. You're Jeff Schwartz,
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: you're NFL bound. And that Montana defensive lineman is 70%.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: Of what you're used to seeing. Is he 85% of
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: what you're used to seeing? Give me a number.
- 1:36:12Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:36:13Speaker 6: I don't know what the number is, but I'll just
- 1:36:14Speaker 6: tell you that's much easier. Um, I think you're able
- 1:36:17Speaker 6: to just play with a little bit of ease, knowing
- 1:36:22Speaker 6: that you're playing against an opponent that just can't really
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: do anything against you.
- 1:36:25Speaker 10: Right.
- 1:36:26Speaker 6: And, and you know, the toughest obviously is when you're
- 1:36:28Speaker 6: off time and playing and you have, you can do
- 1:36:30Speaker 6: multiple things. What do you, what do you prepare for?
- 1:36:31Speaker 6: A lot of times you prepare for these lower, you
- 1:36:34Speaker 6: just can't, there's nothing they can do really that gets
- 1:36:37Speaker 6: you into trouble. And then you can physically wear them out.
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:36:40Speaker 6: And so we know that when you're tired, you just
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: don't play football is really anything as well when you're tired. So,
- 1:36:45Speaker 6: I think that all plays a role in it, right?
- 1:36:48Speaker 6: It's just easier when you play teams that aren't as good.
- 1:36:50Speaker 6: This is why– I'm glad you mentioned the stats, right?
- 1:36:53Speaker 6: Because I think week one and week two and some
- 1:36:56Speaker 6: of these earlier games, it's not about the score. It's
- 1:36:58Speaker 6: about how the game went, right? So I did not
- 1:37:02Speaker 6: watch Utah play very much, so I can't really give
- 1:37:05Speaker 6: you a great idea about what Utah did. So Oregon
- 1:37:08Speaker 6: obviously won by seven. But the average eight yards of
- 1:37:11Speaker 6: play on offense– Their offensive line was great. I think
- 1:37:14Speaker 6: Dalton was hit just once the entire game. They ran
- 1:37:17Speaker 6: the ball for five or six yards to carry. Defensively,
- 1:37:20Speaker 6: they allowed less than five yards to play. They had
- 1:37:22Speaker 6: three sacks. They had something like 20 pressures. They had
- 1:37:26Speaker 6: a couple of really bad plays, right? The boys were
- 1:37:28Speaker 6: on a screen that was just kind of, I thought,
- 1:37:30Speaker 6: unacceptable defense by Oregon. Like, there were some bad plays, certainly,
- 1:37:35Speaker 6: but all the numbers, Sean, pointed to Oregon playing probably
- 1:37:40Speaker 6: pretty well. And so that's why I'm not really, like, concerned.
- 1:37:43Speaker 6: I'm like, oh, okay, well, I mean, yeah, they didn't
- 1:37:45Speaker 6: win by a lot, but the numbers sort of told
- 1:37:48Speaker 6: you that game was a lot better. I mean, when you,
- 1:37:51Speaker 6: you know, when Boise State is trying to throw the
- 1:37:53Speaker 6: ball at the end of the game and you hit
- 1:37:54Speaker 6: the quarterback like four straight plays in a row, that's
- 1:37:58Speaker 6: pretty good. Like, you know, so I think this is
- 1:38:01Speaker 6: what these early games are. They're just sort of, I think,
- 1:38:03Speaker 6: just an idea of where you are as a team,
- 1:38:06Speaker 6: what to work on. Final score to me is not
- 1:38:07Speaker 6: really as important than what I see as sort of
- 1:38:11Speaker 6: The things I look at as far as important numbers
- 1:38:13Speaker 6: of the game.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: The leap from week one to week two.
- 1:38:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: Especially for an offensive line that played several combinations. We saw,
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: we've talked, you and I have talked a lot about
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: Kelvin Obot, by the way.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Left guard. Left guard in the game. Played well.
- 1:38:34Speaker 6: Was that a surprise left guard?
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: No, not for me.
- 1:38:36Speaker 6: Because Oregon came out with like an entirely different offensive
- 1:38:39Speaker 6: line than anyone thought would be week one. So it
- 1:38:41Speaker 6: was kind of a shock.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: That's interesting. Yeah.
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: Utah, it was kind of what people expected it would be.
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: And then they inserted Obot at left guard pretty quickly.
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: And they had two guys that didn't play at all
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: that were considered kind of in the mix.
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: And one of them, I think it's because of an injury.
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: I don't know about the other one.
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: So Obot's best competition for that left guard spot is
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: a guy who didn't play in week one, in my opinion.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: So we'll see what happens moving forward.
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: But that unit has to look a lot better against
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: Arkansas than they did. Arkansas's They've got a defensive end
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: who's a projected first-round pick, so you're going to, especially
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: your tackles, probably going to have to be a heck
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: of a lot better.
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: What kind of leap should we expect in one week?
- 1:39:30Speaker 6: You always say week one to week two is a
- 1:39:34Speaker 6: big leap in production, right? Part of that is you
- 1:39:35Speaker 6: just understand game speed now. You understand what it takes
- 1:39:39Speaker 6: to play the entire 60 minutes. It takes to play
- 1:39:43Speaker 6: 70 plays, what it feels like when things aren't going
- 1:39:46Speaker 6: as well as you want them to go. I mean,
- 1:39:48Speaker 6: all those things you don't really know until you actually
- 1:39:49Speaker 6: get an opportunity to feel those things on a Saturday.
- 1:39:53Speaker 6: And so you understand them a lot better, especially when
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: you're young, heading into week two. And you also get
- 1:39:57Speaker 6: an idea as a coach. I mean, there's a lot
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: of things you think are going to happen in a game, right? Okay,
- 1:40:00Speaker 6: this guy's done this in practice. And you get to
- 1:40:03Speaker 6: a game and they're better or they're worse. They can
- 1:40:06Speaker 6: be worse, too. Absolutely can be worse. And so you
- 1:40:09Speaker 6: can make changes between week one and week two. Okay,
- 1:40:11Speaker 6: this worked. This didn't work. I thought he'd be good
- 1:40:13Speaker 6: at this and he wasn't good at this. Let's do this.
- 1:40:15Speaker 6: And there's a lot of things you can change between
- 1:40:17Speaker 6: week one. Now, you can change sometimes is getting your
- 1:40:19Speaker 6: butt kicked. That's something you just can't do sometimes. There
- 1:40:23Speaker 6: are times when you're just got your butt whooped, man.
- 1:40:26Speaker 6: That's just football. But schematics... confidence is huge, right? Just confidence,
- 1:40:32Speaker 6: getting a chance to play and know what it feels
- 1:40:35Speaker 6: like to play in a college football game and get
- 1:40:36Speaker 6: your legs back underneath you. So you see a lot
- 1:40:39Speaker 6: of improvement between week one and week two. And for Utah,
- 1:40:42Speaker 6: of course, you're playing a much– Arkansas is going to
- 1:40:45Speaker 6: be better. They're not great. They'll be better all over
- 1:40:48Speaker 6: the place. So the first couple of drives, it'll be
- 1:40:51Speaker 6: interesting to see sort of how they start out.
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: All right, let's talk about the biggest game of the weekend.
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: Didn't think it was going to be the biggest game
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: of the weekend, but conversationally, the Kyle Whittingham debut at
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: Michigan ended up being the most controversial thing we've seen
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: in recent years. I don't want to lead the witness
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: at all. What is your take?
- 1:41:13Speaker 6: Okay, so my take, I think, is quite about the controversy,
- 1:41:18Speaker 6: just Michigan in general.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: Well, give me all of it, but especially the ending.
- 1:41:22Speaker 6: I mean, Bryce Underwood is not long for the job.
- 1:41:24Speaker 6: I think that's very clear, right? I mean, Kyle Whittingham
- 1:41:26Speaker 6: basically said that in a press conference. And I was
- 1:41:28Speaker 6: thinking about this the other day when it came to
- 1:41:32Speaker 6: this topic. So how many coaches that got new jobs
- 1:41:38Speaker 6: didn't get to decide the quarterback that they got to keep?
- 1:41:43Speaker 8: No one?
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, no one, basically.
- 1:41:46Speaker 6: And it feels like Kyle Whittingham was given– Bryson was like,
- 1:41:51Speaker 6: you have to make this work because they paid him
- 1:41:52Speaker 6: so much money.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: Okay, so I think you're right.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: I also– because the Utah lens on this is they
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: took the best– who they thought was the best wide receiver.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: They took who they thought was the best corner. They
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: took the best pass rusher.
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: They took– and we all felt like, oh, for sure
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: they're going to take either Devin Dampier or Bird Ficklin.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: And– It sounds like both of those guys got talked to,
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: but that the pursuit of neither was, there wasn't real
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: hardcore overtures for Michigan to get either of those guys.
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: And I'm curious as to why, especially in the case
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: of Bird Ficklin, who, by the way, I think probably
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: got a call on Sunday morning, like you're going to
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: be a Wolverine next year, but whatever. I'm really curious
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: as to why, and I think it falls into what
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: you're saying that Michigan had already decided, we paid for
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: this kid. He's your guy. Succeed with him as the
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: starting quarterback. But you would still want to add depth.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: And I don't know. I'm just curious.
- 1:42:56Speaker 6: But my point is, like, there's no– Kyle Whittington has
- 1:42:59Speaker 6: no attachment to him.
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: Correct.
- 1:43:01Speaker 10: Right?
- 1:43:01Speaker 6: He's not– so that's why I think he's just like, well,
- 1:43:04Speaker 6: he's not good. Like, you're just done. Like, we're just
- 1:43:07Speaker 6: not going to– why would I keep you as my quarterback, right?
- 1:43:10Speaker 6: So I think he's done. Look, Michigan scored the first
- 1:43:13Speaker 6: drive of the game. and then did not get inside
- 1:43:15Speaker 6: Western Michigan territory until the final snap of the game,
- 1:43:18Speaker 6: which was the Hail Mary and the second Hail Mary.
- 1:43:21Speaker 6: So the Hail Mary, okay. Do I think the Big
- 1:43:28Speaker 6: Ten basically cheated? The answer is no. I think that
- 1:43:33Speaker 6: obviously there was this footage, this clock they used, that
- 1:43:37Speaker 6: showed there was one second left on the clock. I
- 1:43:39Speaker 6: believe it. I don't think that they made it up, Sean, right?
- 1:43:41Speaker 6: There's no conspiracy to help Michigan here. the thing that
- 1:43:46Speaker 6: I think is that would they have done the same
- 1:43:48Speaker 6: thing for Western Michigan? No, I don't think. Oh, no, no, no.
- 1:43:55Speaker 6: The clock is right. The NBC clock, or whatever clock
- 1:43:59Speaker 6: it was going to be, they just would have made
- 1:44:01Speaker 6: it that way. That would have been the right feat.
- 1:44:05Speaker 6: So that's the question I have on that angle. Would
- 1:44:08Speaker 6: they have done this for Western Michigan? But then I'm
- 1:44:13Speaker 6: sure you– have you seen today, like, what the Mac
- 1:44:16Speaker 6: put out?
- 1:44:16Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: So we just read that, their statement, that the Mac
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: is seeking to have this win vacated.
- 1:44:22Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:44:22Speaker 6: So this is, like, totally fascinating. So the Mac has
- 1:44:29Speaker 6: announced that this– they did not follow the protocols that
- 1:44:34Speaker 6: were put in place for replay review, and they would
- 1:44:36Speaker 6: like the win essentially vacated. Sean, it's super fascinating because–
- 1:44:42Speaker 6: what if they're right? Like, do they vacate the win?
- 1:44:45Speaker 6: I mean, I guess if they didn't follow the protocols,
- 1:44:52Speaker 6: they probably would have to, right? I mean, like, I don't,
- 1:44:56Speaker 6: I'm so fascinated by this because it's a very black
- 1:45:01Speaker 6: and white thing, right? You either follow the rules or
- 1:45:02Speaker 6: you do not. If you didn't, there was no time
- 1:45:05Speaker 6: left on the clock. So you have lost the game.
- 1:45:09Speaker 6: Would they do that? Or would they just say, I'm sorry, like,
- 1:45:13Speaker 6: we screwed up, we're not changing the result of the game.
- 1:45:15Speaker 6: It's not one of those things where it's like a
- 1:45:18Speaker 6: question of whether or not there's a black and gray area, right?
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: It's like black and white.
- 1:45:23Speaker 6: It's like they either screwed up and there was a
- 1:45:25Speaker 6: second left, or it was done right and there was
- 1:45:27Speaker 6: a second left. I'm very curious what happens here.
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: Well, I don't think that Michigan is going to be
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: asked to vacate the win. I think that... Well, they
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: won't be asked.
- 1:45:36Speaker 6: They should do it.
- 1:45:37Speaker 7: Well, I don't think that the NCAA is going to
- 1:45:39Speaker 7: come up with that decision.
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: Nothing that has happened.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: in the last several decades, but especially these last few
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: years indicate to me that Western Michigan is going to
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: be treated the same way as Michigan or Notre Dame
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: or Ohio state or Oregon or Utah or BYU, right? There's,
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: there's clearly a hierarchy to whose needs the NCAA feels
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: like they want to serve first. And Western Michigan is
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: not near the top of that hierarchy.
- 1:46:09Speaker 6: I agree with you there. Sorry about that. My daughter
- 1:46:10Speaker 6: walked in, um, I agree with you there. So you
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: think they might just say, like, oops, we messed up,
- 1:46:16Speaker 6: we're not changing the result of the game?
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: I don't know what they're going to say, because it's
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: one of these things, right, where you've got a significant
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: portion of the public that says, there was no time left,
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: we all watched it on our television. And then I
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: think the Big Ten did a pretty darn good job
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: of being like, well, here's transparency in our replay review.
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: And you can see in this, in their view, in
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: their angle... there is time left on the clock. So
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: it's like one of these things where you're like, all right, well, intellectually,
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: I acknowledge that there was time on the clock. According
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: to this particular view, emotionally, I'm like, nobody, nobody even
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: knew that that clock existed two days ago. We only
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: know about that because of this controversy. I legitimately had
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: no idea that those two clocks were anything different from
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: one another. And so now I'm like, all right, well,
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: if I believe what I saw from the Big Ten's
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: angle in the replay review, I'm like, yeah, there was
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: a little time left. So I guess they deserve to
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: have that next play, that mulligan. But also I'm like, well,
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: hold on a minute, because Western Michigan would not have
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: been given the same flexibility.
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: And Utah would not have been given the same flexibility.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: And it's only because it's this mega brand that we're
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: having this conversation.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: So I don't know how people will come out on it.
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: But I just can't imagine doing something so unprecedented over
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: what ultimately, like they'll probably say the officials handled it wrong.
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: So they're suspended because they're the ones who were supposed
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: to adjudicate it.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:47:53Speaker 6: Yeah. I, I do also think that, that it's, I
- 1:48:02Speaker 6: know conferences have moved for more transparency. I think the
- 1:48:05Speaker 6: big 12 has done this as well. The ACC, like
- 1:48:06Speaker 6: this would have been great to hear this in real time.
- 1:48:09Speaker 6: Like that would have been a great, I think a
- 1:48:11Speaker 6: great thing for all of us. And I do wonder
- 1:48:14Speaker 6: if this sort of helps move all conferences to do this.
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: I think that's right. NFL season begins. Oh, wait, no, no, no.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: Before I move on from this, you go back in
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: your own career. You get one more mulligan play like
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: Michigan got. Game decider, last second, whatever, a play that
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: somebody– either did or did not get a penalty on.
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: What is one play that if you could go back
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: and replay it and get the opposite result, you think
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: you would have won something important?
- 1:48:49Speaker 6: I think if I could take back the play, then
- 1:48:52Speaker 6: I think it would hurt his knee on. Okay. I
- 1:48:55Speaker 6: would take it back. I think in actuality, so in college,
- 1:49:00Speaker 6: what play did I take back? I mean, we lost it.
- 1:49:02Speaker 6: We fumbled the ball out of the end zone to
- 1:49:04Speaker 6: lose to Cal. We were 8-1 that year. That would
- 1:49:07Speaker 6: have made us 9-0. But then Dennis got hurt, so
- 1:49:09Speaker 6: it didn't really matter in the end. I mean, that
- 1:49:14Speaker 6: was obviously a pretty important play because we could have
- 1:49:16Speaker 6: been undefeated, which would have been a lot of fun.
- 1:49:19Speaker 6: Michael Dyer's knee being down or whatever, his ankle not
- 1:49:23Speaker 6: being down, can we redo that play and give us
- 1:49:26Speaker 6: actually him being down? I don't know how many plays
- 1:49:27Speaker 6: in my career I'd want to redo on.
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: Is the SEC going to vote LSU out? The vote
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: about the island?
- 1:49:40Speaker 6: Ah, geez. I think this is just... The SEC just wants...
- 1:49:45Speaker 6: They don't want a little bit of control, right? This
- 1:49:49Speaker 6: is basically what it is. Can we just enforce our
- 1:49:50Speaker 6: own rules, please? They're not throwing LSU out, but I
- 1:49:55Speaker 6: think they just want the ability to say, we run
- 1:49:57Speaker 6: our own league, and the court system can knock it
- 1:49:59Speaker 6: in the way here.
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a pretty reasonable request.
- 1:50:03Speaker 6: Do you think that every state... Do you think Utah...
- 1:50:08Speaker 6: could find a judge in Utah to give them the
- 1:50:10Speaker 6: rulings they want? Or is this just a thing that
- 1:50:12Speaker 6: just happens in the South?
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: Ooh, that's a good question. I think that the schools
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: here could find a judge to give them the ruling
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: they wanted.
- 1:50:23Speaker 6: Could BYU do it?
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: Well, I think especially BYU could do it.
- 1:50:26Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: I think that, but also because if it were anything
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: that opposed, you know, put those two against one another,
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: if it were like, hey, BYU wants this and Utah doesn't,
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: You will find a judge on either side that's going
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: to grant the injunction or forward the motion just to
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: spite the other.
- 1:50:45Speaker 6: What about Weber State?
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: Probably not quite as successful.
- 1:50:49Speaker 6: How are the Wildcats doing this year?
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: They're 1-0. They've got a game against Colorado coming up.
- 1:50:56Speaker 10: Oh!
- 1:50:56Speaker 6: Are the Buffs off a bye week?
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:51:00Speaker 6: No, the Buffs are off. They play Thursday.
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: They play Thursday.
- 1:51:03Speaker 6: It's such a long time ago.
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: So, yeah, our former high school coach that actually my
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: sophomore year, he was our wide receivers coach. And Eric
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: Kerr is now the head man at Weber State.
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: Oh, they're 1-1. I lied. They're 1-1. They lost to
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: Southern Utah, which is not a good loss for Weber State.
- 1:51:24Speaker 6: Oh, no?
- 1:51:25Speaker 8: No.
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: They beat Northern Colorado, then they lost a close one
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: to Southern Utah. And now they've got Colorado and then,
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: of course, Northwestern State. Ooh, yikes.
- 1:51:35Speaker 6: Are they good or bad?
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: The NFL starts tomorrow night.
- 1:51:41Speaker 6: It's weird.
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: It's weird. Let's start with that first game, Patriots-Seahawks.
- 1:51:47Speaker 2: Are the Seahawks going to be a Super Bowl contender
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: this year, or are they going to have that hangover
- 1:51:52Speaker 2: that most Super Bowl teams do?
- 1:51:55Speaker 6: Either they're definitely a contender or they're winning again, but
- 1:51:57Speaker 6: I think that coaching staff is really, really good. I
- 1:52:00Speaker 6: think the team only lost two starters from the Super Bowl,
- 1:52:02Speaker 6: and that's one of them, the running back, and I
- 1:52:04Speaker 6: think they lost Durant, right, the cornerback or safety. So
- 1:52:08Speaker 6: they returned most of the team. Now, I think it's
- 1:52:10Speaker 6: fair to question, without Kubiak there, what does the offense
- 1:52:14Speaker 6: look like? We saw that with Ben Johnson leaving Detroit
- 1:52:18Speaker 6: last year. It was just a little bit worse. But
- 1:52:21Speaker 6: I think they're still an absolute contender because they have
- 1:52:22Speaker 6: a good quarterback, a really good defense, a great young
- 1:52:25Speaker 6: head coach. To me, it's really just what does the
- 1:52:29Speaker 6: offense look like without Kubiak? their superstar play caller is
- 1:52:34Speaker 6: their man anymore. So I think that they'll just be good.
- 1:52:38Speaker 6: I don't think they'll win the Super Bowl this year,
- 1:52:40Speaker 6: but they're going to be a playoff team.
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: There's this viral video going around of the rugby coach
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: teaching Miles Garrett how to hit.
- 1:52:48Speaker 6: I saw that.
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: And this guy, I've seen him doing stuff with a
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: bunch of, the algorithm feeds me this dude way too much.
- 1:52:54Speaker 6: I'm sure.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: If you had, I guess it's tougher for offensive linemen,
- 1:53:00Speaker 2: but How would you respond to Billy Coffey coming in
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: and being like, this is how you're supposed to do it?
- 1:53:08Speaker 6: I've thought about this, about the algorithm. If Meredith went
- 1:53:12Speaker 6: onto my phone and looked at my algorithm, what would
- 1:53:14Speaker 6: she think about it versus what would I think about
- 1:53:16Speaker 6: her algorithm? Would she just look at like, oh, there's
- 1:53:19Speaker 6: a bunch of videos of steak being cooked. And maybe
- 1:53:23Speaker 6: there's some women in bikinis. Those are probably the two
- 1:53:26Speaker 6: options that are there. There's some You know, softball season,
- 1:53:32Speaker 6: there's like softball, like how to snap the ball better
- 1:53:35Speaker 6: and stuff like that on my feed or like this,
- 1:53:37Speaker 6: you know, NFL highlights or like hers is probably just
- 1:53:40Speaker 6: a disaster feed. I want no part of it. Have
- 1:53:43Speaker 6: you thought about that ever? Do you ever think about that?
- 1:53:44Speaker 6: Just me.
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: No, I've had that actually where my wife is like,
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: let me see your phone. And she's like looking, doing something,
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: usually trying to find her phone because she can never
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: find it. She's like, let me see your phone, and
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: I've got whatever Instagram pulled up.
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: She's like, oh, really? This is what you're looking at?
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: I'm like, it's the algorithm.
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: The algorithm. I just don't care. I'm like, yes, I'm
- 1:54:04Speaker 6: looking at her. Yes, she looks good.
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: It's dogs.
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: It's like animal attack videos from people on safari.
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: It's food stuff.
- 1:54:15Speaker 6: I have a lot of German Shepherd videos, and I've
- 1:54:17Speaker 6: realized that every German Shepherd is the same. I paid
- 1:54:20Speaker 6: a lot of money for mine. It's the exact same as.
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: Every other German Shepherd.
- 1:54:23Speaker 9: Genius.
- 1:54:27Speaker 6: My wife doesn't have a phone problem, but I have
- 1:54:30Speaker 6: a question for you. Let me end with this. I
- 1:54:32Speaker 6: know we're running long here. Do you have a phone
- 1:54:35Speaker 6: tracker on your wife? Because I don't track my wife's phone,
- 1:54:39Speaker 6: and I feel like I'm in the extreme. She doesn't
- 1:54:41Speaker 6: have one on me. I don't have one on her.
- 1:54:43Speaker 6: We have them for our kids, and they're Apple Watches
- 1:54:46Speaker 6: and their backpacks and stuff. But I don't track my
- 1:54:48Speaker 6: wife's location. I have no idea where she is at
- 1:54:50Speaker 6: any given point of the day.
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: Yeah, no.
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: So we do this specifically because my wife can never
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: find her phone. So she will be like, where's my phone?
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: And she'll take my phone and find out where her
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: phone is.
- 1:55:04Speaker 6: But if it's in the house, it doesn't say what
- 1:55:07Speaker 6: room it's in.
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: Yeah, but you can play the little alert. If you've got, like,
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: the find my.
- 1:55:15Speaker 6: Sure, yeah.
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: That's not, yeah.
- 1:55:17Speaker 6: I think Meredith likes a little secrecy, and that's just
- 1:55:19Speaker 6: because she doesn't want me to know she's at work
- 1:55:21Speaker 6: or something. I mean, not that I would ever check it, but, like,
- 1:55:24Speaker 6: people think it's the oddest thing ever. I have no idea.
- 1:55:26Speaker 6: I don't have any– find my phone or whatever service
- 1:55:29Speaker 6: that is on her phone. I have no idea at
- 1:55:30Speaker 6: any time where she is. I mean, I assume she's
- 1:55:32Speaker 6: at work, but, like, I don't know.
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got– I know where my wife's phone is,
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: at least. Whether she's with it or not is another question.
- 1:55:42Speaker 6: I think she's probably with it, I would imagine.
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: It just depends.
- 1:55:46Speaker 6: Have you got her bar mitzvah outfit yet ready?
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: Not yet. Not yet. We've got plenty of time. We've
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: got to save the date, though. All right, buddy.
- 1:55:57Speaker 6: Any last words?
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: No.
- 1:56:00Speaker 6: Is your game early this week?
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: No, it's a night game. Oh, I've been watching.
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: Arkansas is crying about it because they're like, it's 9-15 Central.
- 1:56:09Speaker 2: Their coach is like, we don't know how to get
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: our bodies ready because we're going to be coming out
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: of halftime at midnight.
- 1:56:13Speaker 6: Don't talk bad about Ryan Silverfield. He's my guy.
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: Don't talk bad about him. He's crying.
- 1:56:18Speaker 6: My daughter's softball game is at noon on Saturday, and
- 1:56:21Speaker 6: Oregon plays at noon as well. Is it okay to
- 1:56:23Speaker 6: have my iPad on the game in the dugout?
- 1:56:26Speaker 7: 100% yes.
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: Okay, that's what I thought.
- 1:56:28Speaker 6: I might bring it even at stand.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: Pay close attention when she's batting.
- 1:56:33Speaker 6: To her or to Oregon?
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: To her.
- 1:56:43Speaker 6: Okay, sounds good.
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: You're the man. Thanks, Jeff. All right, that's Jeff Schwartz.
- 1:56:49Speaker 6: You know what?
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: I should have reminded Jeff Schwartz if he needs an advocate.
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: He's had probably a lot of injuries, and he's a
- 1:56:56Speaker 2: big slip and fall type guy, given his general size
- 1:56:59Speaker 2: and bad ankles.
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: 801-355-5550 or utahadvocates.com. You never pay a dime out of pocket.
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: And I know that some people are hesitant because they
- 1:57:11Speaker 2: feel like they don't want to be overly litigious or
- 1:57:14Speaker 2: sue happy or anything like that.
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: That's not what this is about.
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: It's about you making sure that you are protected and
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: you are compensated if something bad does happen to you.
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: So if you've been in a car accident, a motorcycle accident,
- 1:57:25Speaker 2: a boating accident, a scooter accident, a slip and fall situation,
- 1:57:30Speaker 2: maybe you were shopping and some display fell over on
- 1:57:33Speaker 2: you and you had to, to get some stitches or
- 1:57:35Speaker 2: you lost a finger or whatever it is, just make
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: a phone call.
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: 801-355-5550. Go to utahadvocates.com.
- 1:57:43Speaker 8: 24-7-365.
- 1:57:44Speaker 2: Someone is available to answer your legal questions. They are
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: no-cost consultations. You never pay a dime out of pocket.
- 1:57:51Speaker 2: They only win if you win the case. Call the advocates.
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: You did not deserve to be in an accident. You
- 1:57:59Speaker 2: do deserve an advocate.
- 1:58:00Speaker 9: 801-355-5550.
- 1:58:02Speaker 8: 55-50.
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: Tell them OC sent you.
- 1:58:06Speaker 6: All right.
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: Are our guys here, James? They're here? All right.
- 1:58:09Speaker 11: We got.
- 1:58:10Speaker 2: a little outside the norm of what we're talking about here,
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: but some filmmakers, Alberto Nunes and Caleb Keller, the creators
- 1:58:17Speaker 2: of The Last Reckoning, they just won the grand jury
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: prize at Sundance, and there's a viewing tonight. We're going
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: to talk about it next. It's the Sean O'Connell Show
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: That's me in the corner.
- 1:58:30Speaker 5: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 1:58:36Speaker 5: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: The last reckoning of viewing tonight at Broovies. Doors open
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: at 7. Films going to start about 7.30. You do
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: have to be 21 or older because Broovies is a bar,
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: but It's a bar movie theater. It's awesome. It's right
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: here downtown. I'm sure you're familiar with it. Uh, we're
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: lucky enough to have the creators of this film.
- 1:59:02Speaker 2: The last reckoning Alberto Nunez and Caleb Keller winners of
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: a grand jury prize at Sundance for best feature film.
- 1:59:10Speaker 10: I'll start with you, Alberto. Just when you hear that, uh,
- 1:59:14Speaker 10: I mean, just a quick correction. It was at a
- 1:59:16Speaker 10: Zep fest this past, uh, this past weekend.
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: Um, Not Sundance.
- 1:59:21Speaker 4: That's correct.
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: Yeah. Apologies.
- 1:59:24Speaker 4: No, you're good. Um, but Hey, it might be the
- 1:59:27Speaker 4: next Sundance. We'll see.
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: There we go. There we go.
- 1:59:30Speaker 10: No, it's, it's humbling really. Like we are, our film is,
- 1:59:33Speaker 10: is really scrapped together, very low budget. And, uh, to
- 1:59:37Speaker 10: be able to get the recognition of being the best
- 1:59:39Speaker 10: feature film at the festival, it really just, just, you know,
- 1:59:42Speaker 10: makes us really happy and grateful.
- 1:59:44Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:59:45Speaker 11: We know we had a lot of, we had some
- 1:59:47Speaker 11: decent competition too. And we, we both kind of thought like, Oh,
- 1:59:50Speaker 11: There's bigger budgets. These movies look good, but we ended up,
- 1:59:53Speaker 11: they call her name. We're like, Oh my gosh, wait, that's,
- 1:59:55Speaker 11: that's us.
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: That's fantastic.
- 1:59:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: That's awesome. Uh, who wrote the film?
- 2:00:00Speaker 4: Uh, we're both co-writers on it.
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:00:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: Let's talk about the collaborative because we're obviously sports teamwork,
- 2:00:06Speaker 2: that kind of thing.
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: I've done a little writing myself. It's a very, very
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: personal process, right?
- 2:00:13Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: How do you collaborate on something where you're just like,
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: I mean, what you put on those pages and what
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: you want coming out, it's like, I mean, it's the
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: product of your brain. It came from nowhere else.
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: And the process of elimination, when it's all your stuff
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: and you have an editor working on it, that's always
- 2:00:31Speaker 2: really difficult to have somebody like a partner, a friend
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: be like, ah, I want this scene to be this instead.
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: Tell me about the collaboration, the teamwork required to get
- 2:00:40Speaker 2: this from start to finish.
- 2:00:41Speaker 10: Well, while we were writing, there's a quote that I
- 2:00:43Speaker 10: came across that said, if the two of you agree
- 2:00:47Speaker 10: on everything, then one of you isn't necessary. And I
- 2:00:50Speaker 10: think that really kind of guided us throughout the process
- 2:00:52Speaker 10: because it was like, you know, it's having the ability
- 2:00:55Speaker 10: to recognize that, like, sure, I have an idea, but
- 2:00:57Speaker 10: it might not be the best. And I'm just going
- 2:00:59Speaker 10: to throw it out there and see what you think.
- 2:01:01Speaker 10: And we can agree, we can disagree. But at the
- 2:01:03Speaker 10: end of the day, like, we have a job to do.
- 2:01:05Speaker 10: We need to finish a script. It needs to be good.
- 2:01:07Speaker 4: And so.
- 2:01:08Speaker 10: sometimes you have to let go of some things and
- 2:01:10Speaker 10: accept other opinions. But, uh, I think that kind of
- 2:01:12Speaker 10: guided me personally throughout the process.
- 2:01:15Speaker 2: When I talk to athletes and we get a chance
- 2:01:17Speaker 2: to talk to a lot of coaches and athletes, obviously
- 2:01:19Speaker 2: on the sports talk, I'll, I'll be like, all right,
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: so what made you decide that this is your thing?
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: What made you decide you wanted football to be your life,
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: basketball to be your life. And look, sometimes it's basketball.
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: It's like, cause I'm seven feet tall. This is filmmaking.
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: It's not like that.
- 2:01:34Speaker 4: Right. Right.
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: So obviously insanely competitive.
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: A difficult place to make a name for yourself, to
- 2:01:41Speaker 2: make real money in and things like that. Caleb, there's,
- 2:01:44Speaker 2: there are easier paths to success in life. Why filmmaking?
- 2:01:48Speaker 11: Um, you know, I think it's a good point. A
- 2:01:50Speaker 11: lot of people I see like bigger people, they're always like,
- 2:01:52Speaker 11: you know, do you want to do this? If not,
- 2:01:54Speaker 11: like no doubt in your mind, then just don't do it.
- 2:01:57Speaker 11: But I think for me, it's really just like, there's
- 2:01:59Speaker 11: like one or two movies that were like, Oh, that's,
- 2:02:02Speaker 11: those are like memorable moments for me. And it's kind
- 2:02:04Speaker 11: of like being able to imagine something and get it,
- 2:02:08Speaker 11: out of your head and be tangible.
- 2:02:09Speaker 4: I think that was the biggest thing for me. It's like, Oh,
- 2:02:11Speaker 4: you can actually do that.
- 2:02:12Speaker 11: You know, my imagination can transfer to the screen and
- 2:02:15Speaker 11: I can share that with other people.
- 2:02:17Speaker 4: So I think that's the biggest thing for me.
- 2:02:18Speaker 2: And you just like this story, for example, give me
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: like the, uh, give me the elevator pitch.
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: What is the last reckoning? Why should I care about
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: this film? What's it about?
- 2:02:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:02:27Speaker 10: So the movie is about a guy that starts getting
- 2:02:29Speaker 10: chased by gangsters because somebody accidentally put a bag of
- 2:02:32Speaker 10: money in his car and he doesn't know about it.
- 2:02:35Speaker 10: at first, and so he thinks his life is just
- 2:02:37Speaker 10: in danger for no reason. And so the movie takes
- 2:02:41Speaker 10: an unexpected twist. It ends in a way that you
- 2:02:43Speaker 10: wouldn't really think it does. But basically that, you know,
- 2:02:49Speaker 10: it's kind of a film that, you know, you've probably
- 2:02:51Speaker 10: seen different variations of the same film over and over again.
- 2:02:55Speaker 10: But we thought it was a very interesting plot to,
- 2:02:58Speaker 10: you know, and a relatable plot just judging by like
- 2:03:01Speaker 10: the characters' lives and situations.
- 2:03:04Speaker 4: Uh, so when we came up with that, we were like, no,
- 2:03:06Speaker 4: this is, this is it. This is what we got
- 2:03:07Speaker 4: to do.
- 2:03:08Speaker 2: Well, and off to a good start already, right? Getting
- 2:03:11Speaker 2: a little recognition. You got a screening at Broobies tonight. Uh,
- 2:03:14Speaker 2: doors open at seven starts at seven 30. You do
- 2:03:17Speaker 2: have to be 21 years or older to get into Broobies.
- 2:03:19Speaker 2: Cause it is a bar, uh, a movie like that, right?
- 2:03:23Speaker 2: That's taking place in contemporary times with contemporary things, right? And,
- 2:03:29Speaker 2: Probably easier to pull off on a smaller budget when
- 2:03:31Speaker 2: you're just getting started. I know both of you guys
- 2:03:34Speaker 2: have grand dreams, these big things. Like, let's say whatever
- 2:03:39Speaker 2: your favorite studio is, whoever calls you and is just like,
- 2:03:41Speaker 2: you could make any movie you want to make. This
- 2:03:44Speaker 2: budget is no thing. You could write whatever script you want.
- 2:03:47Speaker 2: You can make it about anything. I want this answer
- 2:03:50Speaker 2: from both of you. Caleb will do you first.
- 2:03:52Speaker 1: Like, is it... Fantasy movie? Is it the next Star Wars?
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: Is it a sports film? What is the ultimate mega
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: dream that you see 10 years, 20 years down the road?
- 2:04:02Speaker 11: Man, that's a big question to answer. I'm a very
- 2:04:05Speaker 11: big sci-fi fan for me personally. Sci-fi action movie. So
- 2:04:10Speaker 11: I got a couple ideas in the backlogs, but I
- 2:04:13Speaker 11: think if it's going to be any movie, it would
- 2:04:15Speaker 11: definitely be a sci-fi genre movie.
- 2:04:17Speaker 4: Okay. Pirates and Western for me.
- 2:04:21Speaker 10: I've already done a western short film I want to
- 2:04:23Speaker 10: turn that one into a feature but Pirates I feel
- 2:04:25Speaker 10: like there's been a big lack of that genre recently
- 2:04:29Speaker 10: and I want us to bring it back.
- 2:04:33Speaker 2: Pirates of the Caribbean obviously was a mega franchise there's
- 2:04:36Speaker 2: a fantasy element to that you like that side or
- 2:04:40Speaker 2: you like more like real historical pirate kind of stuff
- 2:04:43Speaker 2: a little bit of both I feel like historical is
- 2:04:45Speaker 2: really cool but you know most of our fears and
- 2:04:49Speaker 2: most of our you know, dreams in life are kind
- 2:04:52Speaker 2: of fantastical.
- 2:04:53Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:04:54Speaker 4: I like representing that on the screen.
- 2:04:55Speaker 10: And you get a little bit of fantasy and some
- 2:04:57Speaker 10: trippiness in our movie, too, in Last Reckoning.
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: Oh, all right. So that's maybe the twist we're looking
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: for here.
- 2:05:04Speaker 6: Okay.
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: Intriguing.
- 2:05:06Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:05:07Speaker 2: Well, congrats on getting a film done in the first
- 2:05:09Speaker 2: place and getting it out there and seen by people
- 2:05:11Speaker 2: and already won prize.
- 2:05:13Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: And hopefully many more in the future.
- 2:05:15Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:05:16Speaker 4: Thanks so much.
- 2:05:17Speaker 1: What else do people need to know before I cut
- 2:05:19Speaker 1: you loose?
- 2:05:21Speaker 11: At Bruvies, we are actually going to have Blu-rays available
- 2:05:25Speaker 11: for purchase as well as posters. So we'll have that there.
- 2:05:28Speaker 11: And then afterwards, we'll have a Q & A after
- 2:05:32Speaker 11: the screening with one of our good friends. And then
- 2:05:35Speaker 11: we're going to hang out at Bruvies and have a
- 2:05:36Speaker 11: good time. They have a pool table there and stuff
- 2:05:39Speaker 11: like that. So hang out and talk to everybody.
- 2:05:41Speaker 4: All right. Tickets at lastreckoningmovie.com.
- 2:05:44Speaker 2: LastReckoningMovie.com. Brewvies at 7 tonight. That's when the doors open.
- 2:05:48Speaker 2: Show starts at 7.30, 21 or older. Thanks for coming in, guys.
- 2:05:53Speaker 11: Oh, wait.
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: Streaming in October at some point? Is that true with
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: Last Reckoning?
- 2:05:57Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:05:57Speaker 10: We will be streaming this fall. Not exactly sure what dates,
- 2:06:00Speaker 10: but we will be announcing on the website.
- 2:06:02Speaker 8: Yep.
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: Awesome. Good stuff. Thanks for coming in, fellas.
- 2:06:06Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:06:06Speaker 4: Thank you so much.
- 2:06:07Speaker 2: We have Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson tickets. They're coming
- 2:06:10Speaker 2: to the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater September 14th. You

- 2:06:15Speaker 2: this week for your chance to win tickets. We also
- 2:06:18Speaker 2: have Weezer tickets. In fact, I'm going to give away
- 2:06:21Speaker 2: a pair next. They're coming to the Maverick Center on
- 2:06:23Speaker 2: September 15th. A pair of Weezer tickets with a trivia
- 2:06:27Speaker 2: question when we come back. It's the Sean O'Connell Show
- 2:06:30Speaker 2: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
