- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, Hey, Ali, Hey doing I'm good.
- 0:03Speaker 2: How are you, Kim?
- 0:05Speaker 1: Yeah, sorry about the problems with coordinating Josie, that's okay,
- 0:11Speaker 1: that's a cow.
- 0:12Speaker 3: I wasn't sure if I'd liked miss I've been. I
- 0:14Speaker 3: had four interviews day. I'd been crazy. I'm like, Dave,
- 0:17Speaker 3: did I get the time?
- 0:18Speaker 1: But that's well, Dave only really just told me about
- 0:21Speaker 1: ten minutes going on, and I think she might still
- 0:24Speaker 1: be in some work meetings.
- 0:25Speaker 3: So yeah, no, that's totally okay. That's all good, as
- 0:29Speaker 3: much as it's great to talk to any of you.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Guys are absolute legends in my eyes, so very good.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Hello two, be speaking with yourself and welcome to have
- 0:38Speaker 3: you mag So yeah, no, I see is that a
- 0:42Speaker 3: mark of Caine shirt that you have on?
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yeah? Kind of work for you, so yeah, kind of.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I ended up we wore we wear Dicky's shirts on
- 0:53Speaker 1: stage I years and years ago and got them made
- 0:56Speaker 1: up for each of the band members, and then fans
- 0:59Speaker 1: started dancing for him. So then we started producing merch.
- 1:02Speaker 1: And now I've just moved house and I had to
- 1:05Speaker 1: get rid of a lot of clothes and I kept
- 1:07Speaker 1: oh my so and I figured it's kind of like
- 1:11Speaker 1: you know, when you're company, you wear the band mech no.
- 1:15Speaker 2: That's awesome. That's also my own partner.
- 1:17Speaker 3: He saw you many many years ago in Sydney and
- 1:20Speaker 3: he just loved that and goes, yeah, they were wearing
- 1:22Speaker 3: like collared shirts and they just didn't look and then
- 1:25Speaker 3: learning he goes, oh my god, it did not sound
- 1:27Speaker 3: like what I was going to hear.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Thought I was going to hear.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I've always whenever I used to see bands, always would
- 1:34Speaker 1: look and think, God, there's like four completely differently dressed,
- 1:38Speaker 1: misfitting kind of people together, which is great bands of individuals.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Band members are all individuals, but because of the precision
- 1:46Speaker 1: of our music, because everything has to be locked down,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and really I kind of went, hey, we should kind
- 1:52Speaker 1: of wear a uniform per se.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So yeah, no, that's that's really cool. I like it.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I feel like I have to get my hands on
- 1:59Speaker 2: some of these.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I think we're going to do some stuff for
- 2:02Speaker 1: the next next tour. So we can't. It's hard because
- 2:07Speaker 1: you can make it. They're not cheap, they're not T shirt,
- 2:10Speaker 1: and so you kind of if you make too much stock,
- 2:12Speaker 1: you kind of yeah, good stock behind. So typically we've
- 2:16Speaker 1: done custom orders for it in the past, but yeah,
- 2:19Speaker 1: then it's just a limited edition, which is kind of
- 2:22Speaker 1: cool as well.
- 2:23Speaker 2: It's very cool. That's very cool.
- 2:24Speaker 3: So what's been happening in the world of Marko Ka
- 2:27Speaker 3: music wise? And the you guys are coming up to
- 2:29Speaker 3: Z fifty fifty one sorry which poorly legend, which is.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Looking we're looking forward to that. That kind of became
- 2:36Speaker 1: a bit of a catalyst speak for us to come
- 2:39Speaker 1: out live again.
- 2:39Speaker 2: We yeah, because it's been some time.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's probably a couple of years. Back into twenty three.
- 2:45Speaker 1: We did the These tour for the anniversary for that album,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and we kind of went and did some shows on
- 2:54Speaker 1: the road. I mean, I'd had a cycling accent just
- 2:56Speaker 1: before it, which pushed some of the tour dates back
- 2:58Speaker 1: because I was able to walk and so forth. So
- 3:02Speaker 1: when we got back on the road twenty three, did
- 3:04Speaker 1: that tour, enjoyed it, went back. Typically we're going on
- 3:08Speaker 1: to it. We do a lot of rehearsals leading up
- 3:10Speaker 1: to the tour obviously, just to make sure it's super
- 3:12Speaker 1: match fit and tight and so forth. But then when
- 3:15Speaker 1: we come back from a tour, we go yeah, okay,
- 3:17Speaker 1: now we just go back to normal life. This time,
- 3:19Speaker 1: we said, let's continue rehearsing maybe once a week or
- 3:23Speaker 1: once every two and start writing because I've never written
- 3:27Speaker 1: with Eli as our Okay, he's with us probably about
- 3:33Speaker 1: eleven twelve years now, and he was always our kind
- 3:35Speaker 1: of live drama that we used to go and play
- 3:38Speaker 1: live when John Stannier wasn't able to come across from
- 3:40Speaker 1: the US given the other commitments to the band. So
- 3:43Speaker 1: but then we kind of decided, well, we don't think
- 3:45Speaker 1: John Stanny is ever going to have the time to
- 3:47Speaker 1: come and do it. Eli's really now a permanent member
- 3:49Speaker 1: of the band. Let's write with him, and let's do that.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So we've been writing off and on now for the
- 3:55Speaker 1: last eighteen months and completed eight songs. Our writing style
- 4:03Speaker 1: is quite different maybe to other bands. I mean, Josie
- 4:06Speaker 1: used to be the main songwriter. We bring near complete
- 4:11Speaker 1: kind of bits and pieces to the to the rehearsal room.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Eli himself is obviously a very good drummer but also
- 4:18Speaker 1: plays guitar and bass, and he's got a studio where
- 4:21Speaker 1: he teaches drums, so he's bringing a whole lot of stuff,
- 4:25Speaker 1: largely completed songs.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Then does the lyrics, but so the songwriting process has
- 4:31Speaker 1: changed a little. What we're finding is we've always had
- 4:35Speaker 1: lots of riffs, you know, we kind of start with
- 4:37Speaker 1: a riff and then build it out. We've now got
- 4:40Speaker 1: eight complete songs and we've demoed them in Eli Studio,
- 4:44Speaker 1: which is sounding really really great, and then we'll do
- 4:47Speaker 1: probably another two or three, finish off another three that
- 4:49Speaker 1: we've got lots in the idea space, we just need
- 4:52Speaker 1: to complete them. And so then we said, okay, well
- 4:56Speaker 1: let's get that I don't know what six album maybe
- 5:00Speaker 1: for us, maybe the sixth album to do that six
- 5:02Speaker 1: album and then we'll go out of the road. And then,
- 5:06Speaker 1: of course we always take longer than we think we're
- 5:08Speaker 1: going to take. So and then the opportunity to come
- 5:11Speaker 1: and play in Brisbane came up, we said, let's do it.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Paul Curtis has been a long standing friend.
- 5:17Speaker 3: In colleague's amazing, so I've love working with Pauly.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so Paul said, yeah, we'd love to do that.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Great bands on the show. Let's go and do that.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And of course we said, okay, well we can maybe
- 5:28Speaker 1: play a few new songs. It'll pause us a little
- 5:31Speaker 1: bit for our writing, but and then of course you go,
- 5:35Speaker 1: we're going to rehearse and be so much fit. Why
- 5:38Speaker 1: don't we just go and do a couple of other
- 5:39Speaker 1: shows now now we've got it.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's cool. So you're going to do a few
- 5:41Speaker 2: after a few.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Others, perfact, because we're not going to Perth, but you know,
- 5:46Speaker 1: per Perth to challenge.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Always it is logistics, yeah, because they do.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Get the ship end of the stick and get that.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Adelaide used to get that as well.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Because it's the way to go, and she got Adelaide.
- 5:56Speaker 2: These days I noticed a little bit. Yeah, it's not.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Quite as far as because Perth from Adelaide is another
- 6:00Speaker 1: two and a half power. Yeah, what we intend to
- 6:03Speaker 1: do is do these run the festival plus the three shows,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and we'll finish the album probably complete in the new year,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and then get on the road proper for a proper tour.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, well it's a nice warm up for
- 6:18Speaker 3: the fans. I tell you, I was absolutely wraps. It
- 6:22Speaker 3: was because I kind of knew that there was a
- 6:25Speaker 3: Z fifty one happening back in February. It was on
- 6:27Speaker 3: the you know, obviously Paul wasn't sure if it was
- 6:30Speaker 3: gonna come about and it was funny. It was just
- 6:32Speaker 3: before he released the lineup and I was listening to
- 6:36Speaker 3: my iTunes and like just my stuff I had, and
- 6:38Speaker 3: then it just runs on like similar tracks, and then
- 6:41Speaker 3: next minute you guys come on.
- 6:43Speaker 2: I went, oh my god, Mark Okain, I've.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Just had a moment. I'm like, how fucking good were they?
- 6:48Speaker 3: And literally within a week you guys are on the
- 6:51Speaker 3: bill and I.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Just about fell over. I went, oh my gosh, this
- 6:53Speaker 2: is amazing.
- 6:54Speaker 3: So I'm very happy to see you guys again because
- 6:58Speaker 3: it was gosh back in mid nineties, I think I
- 7:02Speaker 3: asked you guys at a festival.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Somewhere would have been.
- 7:05Speaker 1: We did quite a few of the in Queensland and
- 7:08Speaker 1: other areas back in the day. But liberty in terms
- 7:15Speaker 1: of touring because Jose and I have always had our
- 7:19Speaker 1: day jobs. Standire when he was in the band was
- 7:22Speaker 1: living in Brooklyn, New York, or touring with Tomahawk, which
- 7:25Speaker 1: he's doing right now, or he'd be battles So it
- 7:29Speaker 1: was always logistically hard and kind of lough take. So
- 7:32Speaker 1: you've got kids, you've got day jobs, et cetera, et cetera,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and t mock was never a particular money making venture
- 7:41Speaker 1: for us. It was a creative out for us, so
- 7:43Speaker 1: therefore doing it all the time wasn't necessary, and it
- 7:47Speaker 1: gave us creative freedom to play whatever we wanted, whenever
- 7:50Speaker 1: we wanted, and you know, occasionally it's sort of happy
- 7:55Speaker 1: not to be touring and then you kind of go,
- 7:57Speaker 1: I missed that enjoyment of going out and playing song.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a nice balance so that you guys have
- 8:02Speaker 3: had though, definitely, because you had when you've been doing
- 8:04Speaker 3: it for for some time.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I think the Shirts has established in nineteen eighty four, so.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Oh gosh, that's crazy.
- 8:13Speaker 1: So that's forty two years.
- 8:14Speaker 3: I spose Yeah, because I was born in nineteen eighty
- 8:19Speaker 3: it's a long time.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Although that's wild, hasn't been hasn't been forty two consistent years.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I mean we've always been obviously, Josie and myself are
- 8:30Speaker 1: a closers siblings, so come all the time, but has
- 8:34Speaker 1: not been consistently playing in the band all the time.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I mean I went overseas, Joseie went overseas, so we've
- 8:40Speaker 1: we've had time apart. And I think also the longevity
- 8:44Speaker 1: of the band helps with the siblings, you know, yeah, siblings,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you know, we can have some stinking fights.
- 8:52Speaker 3: That I think that any band I was like being
- 8:55Speaker 3: in a bad marriage with three or four different other
- 8:57Speaker 3: people exactly.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And you know you're in a tin shed in the
- 9:01Speaker 1: middle of summer. Yeah, in this case you kind of blood,
- 9:05Speaker 1: bloodstick and water.
- 9:06Speaker 3: So yeah, absolutely, Yeah, And you guys have also got
- 9:10Speaker 3: your signature sound to which you know you haven't deviated from.
- 9:13Speaker 3: And that's I think, really you know what the fans
- 9:15Speaker 3: you obviously love, and it's you know, miss out but works,
- 9:19Speaker 3: you know, why change it?
- 9:20Speaker 1: And yeah, well, and I suppose and when we reflect
- 9:24Speaker 1: that it has been consistent as you say, I mean,
- 9:26Speaker 1: the influencers have changed. You know, early on you're probably
- 9:30Speaker 1: more likened to the Joy Division kind of the yeah
- 9:32Speaker 1: it melodic. Then we did some shows with Big Black
- 9:36Speaker 1: and Steve Abennie and that kind of introduced his drum machine,
- 9:40Speaker 1: you know, playing kind of went wow, that's a new
- 9:43Speaker 1: sort of style of tightness and so forth. And we
- 9:47Speaker 1: were already already playing really complex rhythms and stuff.
- 9:50Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, definitely, And so then it was.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Kind of English melody meets American sonic. And then you know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: as you sort of just listen to different music, get
- 9:59Speaker 1: influenced and so forth. So I think you're right, there's
- 10:03Speaker 1: that consistency, and a lot of that is Josie's consistent songwriting.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Yeah, so you said that she's dominantly just lyrics, so
- 10:12Speaker 3: it's not involved with the riffs.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Or just she's so Josie has from the get go
- 10:18Speaker 1: been it was really her band. I mean both engineers. Yeah,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I engineering was my main career. I think Josey to
- 10:27Speaker 1: have done music as a career, but Mum and Dad said, yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 1: don't be silly. But Josie early days it was a
- 10:36Speaker 1: little more free to sort of bring riffs and muck
- 10:40Speaker 1: around and be a bit more organic. I mean, we're
- 10:43Speaker 1: not a jamming kind of band because of the structure
- 10:45Speaker 1: of the songs are quite engineering and mathematical, so therefore
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's not just hey, come along and play whatever you want.
- 10:52Speaker 1: So it's always had structure. But after a few years
- 10:55Speaker 1: Josie knew exactly what she wanted, how she wanted to sound,
- 10:58Speaker 1: so she would really bring stuff not completed, but would
- 11:03Speaker 1: have a really good idea of what she wanted and
- 11:07Speaker 1: for instance with our drummers like Ilse for example, as
- 11:11Speaker 1: an album, Aaron Houston's drummer then and Joe, I want
- 11:17Speaker 1: this and I want that, and so in my mind
- 11:20Speaker 1: and I was there. Josie wrote most of the drums
- 11:23Speaker 1: for Ilse. Aaron was a great and Josie also plays drums,
- 11:29Speaker 1: and Aaron was a great almost like human drum machine
- 11:32Speaker 1: to take and we had to punch We had to
- 11:35Speaker 1: punch in a few few more times and once. But
- 11:39Speaker 1: if you're working with the right people, then it works.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Then when John Stania joined, because he's just such an
- 11:49Speaker 1: iconic drummer in his own right, Josie wasn't as keen
- 11:53Speaker 1: to direct John Stanny as to what to play, but
- 11:57Speaker 1: it didn't matter because John Stanley knew exactly what to play.
- 12:00Speaker 3: And so yeah, yeah, the right person that you picked
- 12:03Speaker 3: to be part of the band, they just they work,
- 12:05Speaker 3: just gels the dynamics.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So yeah. So Jose's principal songwriter and always has been,
- 12:12Speaker 1: both lyrically and musically.
- 12:15Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, nice. Nice.
- 12:17Speaker 3: And so when you guys recording the studio, do you
- 12:19Speaker 3: all go in and do it or do you do it?
- 12:22Speaker 1: No, we do it together. Yeah, So again we've probably
- 12:26Speaker 1: I know, some bands, particularly ones that are geographically separated,
- 12:29Speaker 1: can kind of do parts or seven.
- 12:32Speaker 3: I mean, it's true, very different think styles are recording,
- 12:35Speaker 3: which for me it's it's interesting, yeah, to see how
- 12:38Speaker 3: it comes together.
- 12:39Speaker 1: We've always been a band that typically writes songs in
- 12:43Speaker 1: a rearsal studio, takes them out, live them, evolves them
- 12:49Speaker 1: through live shows, and then once it's lockdown, we go
- 12:53Speaker 1: on the studio and play. We do that. We did
- 12:55Speaker 1: that for the first three or four albums on as
- 12:58Speaker 1: we played with Standing because he was in country, we
- 13:01Speaker 1: had to really rely on him coming into country, spending
- 13:03Speaker 1: a week trying to write, and then some things weren't
- 13:07Speaker 1: finalized when we went in the studio, so we would
- 13:09Speaker 1: write a little bit in the studio and create them
- 13:12Speaker 1: in the studio more which was different because then when
- 13:14Speaker 1: we would have the album completed, we think, we've never
- 13:16Speaker 1: even played these live before, so we sometimes created headaches
- 13:21Speaker 1: because it was like, man, how are we going to
- 13:22Speaker 1: be able to pull that off live? So in this case,
- 13:25Speaker 1: where writing again like we used to, which is in
- 13:28Speaker 1: the rehearsal studio, we will then go into a recording
- 13:32Speaker 1: studio and put the things out and when we record,
- 13:35Speaker 1: we typically I mean it depends on the studio but
- 13:39Speaker 1: we will typically record being able to see each other,
- 13:41Speaker 1: isolating the instruments in different rooms, so we spill over,
- 13:45Speaker 1: but we'd all be watching each other, and because of
- 13:48Speaker 1: the tightness and the accuracy, we all kind of have
- 13:52Speaker 1: visual eyeline and play, so we would pretty will put
- 13:55Speaker 1: it down live. And obviously Steve Abeni, who you know,
- 13:59Speaker 1: we had done some shows with Di Dn't Be Black,
- 14:01Speaker 1: and then played with Shellac when they would tour. We
- 14:05Speaker 1: would play with Sheilac and we went.
- 14:07Speaker 2: To recording for a while.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, and Steve passed away two years ago now,
- 14:13Speaker 1: but we were in Chicago recording studio and did some
- 14:16Speaker 1: songs with Steve, and he was probably one producer we
- 14:20Speaker 1: would have loved to have done an album, a full
- 14:22Speaker 1: album with We did some songs with him, but not
- 14:24Speaker 1: a full album because he loved capturing the live sound
- 14:27Speaker 1: of the band and one of the things we felt
- 14:29Speaker 1: as a band sonically we were quite visceral and in
- 14:34Speaker 1: a live sense impactful and people felt it and so forth,
- 14:39Speaker 1: he never translated that onto the records as much as
- 14:42Speaker 1: I'd like to. So Albanie was big about capturing the
- 14:48Speaker 1: essence and the liveness of the band. So but yeah,
- 14:52Speaker 1: I think increasingly recording these days with all the DISI
- 14:57Speaker 1: recording techniques and so forth, it's easy to get a
- 15:00Speaker 1: big sound. Back in the day, we get put on
- 15:03Speaker 1: analog tape.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Yeah, the old analog reels, and you were really a
- 15:07Speaker 3: different sound too, though.
- 15:08Speaker 1: With a different sound. And even though he is a
- 15:11Speaker 1: big analy he was a big analog fan, but reliant
- 15:14Speaker 1: on the quality of the engineer to capture the sounds
- 15:17Speaker 1: pressure on tape, whereas now digitally you can kind of
- 15:20Speaker 1: get it a little easier.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, for sure, for sure.
- 15:26Speaker 1: And sorry, so no you go.
- 15:29Speaker 3: I was just saying, when you play live, do you
- 15:31Speaker 3: guys plug in like the old school with leads and everything.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I see a lot of.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Bands, Yeah, so we do. And it's interesting because we've
- 15:39Speaker 1: been so we don't use innears. A lot of bands
- 15:42Speaker 1: use where they've got the kind of fold back in
- 15:46Speaker 1: their ears. We've never done it. Elis in another band
- 15:49Speaker 1: and they use in ears and he gets how good
- 15:51Speaker 1: they are, and you know, after playing for so long,
- 15:56Speaker 1: we're probably losing it a hearing because we've always a
- 16:00Speaker 1: loud stage sound and the fol has to compete with
- 16:03Speaker 1: our amps that are loud and then you've got to
- 16:06Speaker 1: fold back. That has to be as loud to be
- 16:07Speaker 1: he in vocals and drumma. But yeah, we're still very
- 16:13Speaker 1: much pedal boards, amplifiers, cables. We don't even have a.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Wireless Yeah, no, that's what I don't find them.
- 16:21Speaker 3: I mean I've used one before and actually it deviated
- 16:24Speaker 3: the sound so much, like yeah, so half of what
- 16:26Speaker 3: my rumboo can do.
- 16:28Speaker 1: What it's like, Yeah, And I mean so Jose and
- 16:31Speaker 1: I are kind of old school in that regard. Eli
- 16:35Speaker 1: is you know, probably thirty at least thirty years younger
- 16:40Speaker 1: than us, and he's much more, very very tech savvy.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So he's sort of saying, you know, the beauty of
- 16:47Speaker 1: the innis obviously the consistency of the sound you said
- 16:50Speaker 1: at once, and no matter what room you're in, you're
- 16:52Speaker 1: hearing exactly what you want to hear. Yeah, because sound
- 16:55Speaker 1: check is always well can you turn the drums up?
- 16:57Speaker 1: Can you turn this up? Can you turn it?
- 17:00Speaker 2: As?
- 17:00Speaker 1: You set the rig up? Once and that you just
- 17:02Speaker 1: take it on the road and it's just perfect. So yeah, yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 1: it's it's probably a more convenient way to travel and operate,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and certainly these days you can get digital amps that
- 17:13Speaker 1: you can't don't even take you don't even take speaker
- 17:16Speaker 1: boxes or anything on stage, just take.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you just plug it into the PA and it
- 17:20Speaker 2: all goes.
- 17:22Speaker 1: And so you know, Eli's toyed that concept with us,
- 17:26Speaker 1: and we're kind of just we haven't got me yet.
- 17:30Speaker 3: I see a lot of bands are still doing the
- 17:32Speaker 3: old school with like musical sitars with the leads, and
- 17:34Speaker 3: I just love it.
- 17:35Speaker 2: It just's I.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Mean, there's got to be some healthy aspect of the
- 17:39Speaker 1: music industry, and that's weightlifting. You know, we've we did
- 17:43Speaker 1: many years of that own ready, but these days we've
- 17:47Speaker 1: got crew that help us out and we're getting so
- 17:50Speaker 1: old we've hurt our backs.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Oh, I know, that's what you've You've definitely earned the
- 17:58Speaker 3: place to have crew doing it for you, that's for sure.
- 18:01Speaker 3: You guys have been absolute musical geniuses of this country.
- 18:04Speaker 1: And to some people saw us, I think it was
- 18:08Speaker 1: day one. We hadn't even at first show that you
- 18:10Speaker 1: guys are looking tired.
- 18:11Speaker 2: It's like cheers mate, yeah.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Maybe yeah, maybe, just no further comments about yeah.
- 18:23Speaker 2: That's on the old part. Yes, oh I know, but
- 18:26Speaker 2: it's amazing.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I'm so happy that you guys are going to be
- 18:29Speaker 3: playing and I get to see you at ZE fifty one,
- 18:31Speaker 3: which it's going to be a great day.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I mean last year was just phenomenal.
- 18:34Speaker 3: It was the day itself was just the energy in
- 18:38Speaker 3: the vibe was amazing. It was honestly incredible, and everyone
- 18:41Speaker 3: I spoke to that was the general consensus all around
- 18:44Speaker 3: the other crowd, that the artists themselves.
- 18:47Speaker 2: It was just a bloody good day.
- 18:49Speaker 1: And yeah, and I think I think the mix of
- 18:51Speaker 1: bands makes it. You know, first some of the crowd
- 18:55Speaker 1: that sees some of the older bands, and then there's
- 18:57Speaker 1: a few few of the new bands. So yeah, we're
- 18:59Speaker 1: looking forward to it very much.
- 19:00Speaker 3: So yeah, and mud Honey, of course, you know how
- 19:02Speaker 3: phenomenal is that, Like, that's that's going to be pretty
- 19:05Speaker 3: darn cool.
- 19:08Speaker 1: As our manager says, we're vintage vintage bands.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Now, not that makes me feel true.
- 19:15Speaker 3: I love it though, like all my favorite bands and
- 19:17Speaker 3: doing anniversary tours and I'm seeing it all again and
- 19:19Speaker 3: it's just it's incredible.
- 19:21Speaker 2: It's the literally the best. I love it.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Well, that is part of it, because obviously there's an
- 19:26Speaker 1: anniversary of one of the albums. We keep getting told
- 19:30Speaker 1: by our webmaster anniversary of this this year or this
- 19:35Speaker 1: market like Okay, So with enough albums out there, there's
- 19:38Speaker 1: always an anniversary of some sort. So this year is
- 19:41Speaker 1: the twenty fifth anniversary of this.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Is This Okay, yep, the.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Album we did, the first album we did with John Staniers.
- 19:47Speaker 1: So nice part of the set. Obviously we won't keep
- 19:52Speaker 1: fan favorites in there from Illa these and other albums,
- 19:55Speaker 1: but yeah, a number of the songs are going to
- 19:59Speaker 1: be from this Is It is just to celebrate the
- 20:01Speaker 1: fact that it's twenty five, and some new ones in
- 20:03Speaker 1: there as well, just to give a bit of a taste.
- 20:04Speaker 1: They're probably maybe only two new ones for the festival set.
- 20:08Speaker 1: For the rest of the shows will do around Australia,
- 20:11Speaker 1: will add maybe maybe year three or four new songs
- 20:16Speaker 1: just to give a bit more of a taste and
- 20:17Speaker 1: road test to see how they.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, So you guys are on the big
- 20:22Speaker 3: stage or the small stage, you.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Know, I don't actually know.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I am more stages on a lean for the crowd.
- 20:28Speaker 2: You guys are stable. It's on a bit of a downhill, it's.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Right, okay, Yeah, we're not even familiar probably with the venue.
- 20:35Speaker 3: It's okay, Well, it's like an amphithea of the Rome
- 20:37Speaker 3: Street Parklands. I mean it's great, great venue, like great spot.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Right, I don't think we've probably played that venue before.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Yeah, like it doesn't.
- 20:45Speaker 3: I mean it's been utilized now, but it wasn't venue wise,
- 20:49Speaker 3: you know, it's been under used for sure, but it
- 20:51Speaker 3: is absolutely insane. Like last year seen GrITT spring there,
- 20:56Speaker 3: but that was part of the night at the Parklands.
- 20:58Speaker 3: So they put it, which is happening again this year.
- 21:01Speaker 3: And when I was because I interviewed Benny and Kwan
- 21:04Speaker 3: last year for the fifty and they said it was
- 21:08Speaker 3: one of their first venues that they played and they
- 21:10Speaker 3: hadn't played back there since then, so it was kind
- 21:12Speaker 3: of really cool.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Right Yeah, yeah, looking forward to it. So, I mean
- 21:16Speaker 1: we used to do was it Davies Park?
- 21:19Speaker 3: Was that we're river stage? Is maybe one that's river Stage?
- 21:24Speaker 3: Is that it's very similar to Parklands in the sense
- 21:26Speaker 3: as an amphitheater and yeah, yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 1: It sounds like a good vibe, so oh yeah, no,
- 21:31Speaker 1: it's looking forward to that. So yeah, and we're just
- 21:37Speaker 1: just to be able to get some new stuff out
- 21:39Speaker 1: there as well.
- 21:39Speaker 3: So yeah, for sure, and with so few so how
- 21:42Speaker 3: many showed you said you were doing three or four
- 21:44Speaker 3: after Z fifty one.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Yeah, we've got obviously the Brisbane Show Festival and doing
- 21:50Speaker 1: I think we're doing Melbourne, so that's October. In November
- 21:56Speaker 1: we're doing Melbourne, followed by Sydney on the one weekend
- 22:00Speaker 1: and then I think on the twenty first November we
- 22:02Speaker 1: do Adelaide. Oh nice great venue here. That very similar
- 22:08Speaker 1: to some of the big venues set up in Brisbane,
- 22:10Speaker 1: which I think part owned by someone from Powder Fingers,
- 22:13Speaker 1: so they're very both banned friendly and also listener friendly.
- 22:19Speaker 2: So that really that which one which Venny was at.
- 22:23Speaker 1: That's the Adelaide venue was called Heinley Street Music Hall.
- 22:27Speaker 1: So it's a three levels there's a bar and every
- 22:30Speaker 1: level so the punters get nice ability to sort of
- 22:33Speaker 1: relax and get visual site of the stage from every
- 22:37Speaker 1: advantage point.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:39Speaker 1: All the backs of area for stage for band in
- 22:43Speaker 1: text is also really really well appointed.
- 22:45Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Venue it's about probably about a fifteen hundred and sixteen
- 22:49Speaker 1: hundred capacity, so nice size, very nice.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 3: No, there's some good venues around us for sure. You
- 22:54Speaker 3: know when they set out you know, like that for
- 22:56Speaker 3: the for the punters it's it's always good.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Yes, well, just because of what's happened with the number
- 23:04Speaker 1: of pubs and other places in the urban city scape
- 23:08Speaker 1: where you know, everything gets gentrified, people move in and
- 23:13Speaker 1: then complain about the noise in the.
- 23:15Speaker 2: In the northern rivers, you preach into the quiet. So
- 23:18Speaker 2: it's very much to that are.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Yeah, there's been a lot of a lot of venues
- 23:21Speaker 1: haven't continued because of that. I'm sure it's the same
- 23:24Speaker 1: anywhere else.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think that you know, the pubs have
- 23:27Speaker 3: that a bit of an advantage too, obviously. You know,
- 23:29Speaker 3: they they've got the poker machines mostly and they can
- 23:32Speaker 3: afford to have that. And when you've got venues that
- 23:34Speaker 3: are just targeted like for music, which I mean are
- 23:37Speaker 3: great venues to attend and to play, they're the ones
- 23:40Speaker 3: that seem to you know, get cold first and hit
- 23:43Speaker 3: the hardest. And you know, it's and the live music
- 23:47Speaker 3: scene is it's thriving, it's it's it's really good to
- 23:51Speaker 3: see just how many people you know are still out there.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Doing live music.
- 23:55Speaker 3: And it's I just hope that it sustains itself in
- 23:58Speaker 3: the sense that you know, that doesn't get to the
- 24:00Speaker 3: point where venues can't afford to stay opens, struggled to
- 24:05Speaker 3: find somewhere to play, and people, you know, there's signed
- 24:08Speaker 3: that you know, the overpriced beer is just too much.
- 24:10Speaker 1: And yeah, well, I mean again, I probably don't get
- 24:14Speaker 1: out that much these day. It's just because other things
- 24:17Speaker 1: to do. But certainly, growing up, the live music environment
- 24:21Speaker 1: was kind of where you met your tribe. Oh absolutely,
- 24:24Speaker 1: ran and stuff, social sort of setting for that kind
- 24:28Speaker 1: of stuff.
- 24:28Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah, yeah, well, and you know it's unfortunately.
- 24:32Speaker 3: I mean I always had gigs every weekend covering him
- 24:35Speaker 3: for the magazine, which is great, and I play too,
- 24:38Speaker 3: but I mean I don't go out. I can go
- 24:39Speaker 3: out and have two or three drinks and be fine,
- 24:41Speaker 3: and I'm just like, I finally got to that stage
- 24:43Speaker 3: in my life where you know, that's okay young me.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Though I wouldn't have a bar of that.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Yeah exactly.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Yeah, well that was deeper that I remember. You could
- 24:50Speaker 2: go out with twenty bucks and come home with more
- 24:52Speaker 2: money than you went out with, you know.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. Well, we find the same The recovery from
- 24:57Speaker 1: a big night out is counting days rather than our.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Oh I recover from minor surgery quicker than a hangover.
- 25:04Speaker 3: I always say it's crazy, but yeah, I and I
- 25:08Speaker 3: just don't find the desire, which is good nine think
- 25:10Speaker 3: to you know, obviously a female, I would like to
- 25:12Speaker 3: be able to leave when I want to be in
- 25:14Speaker 3: control of the situation. And it's the safe thing too,
- 25:17Speaker 3: which you know, you get older, a bit wiser, and
- 25:19Speaker 3: I've got two girls too, which I'm trying to instill
- 25:21Speaker 3: that into, which.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Is we actually see some of the older fans still
- 25:27Speaker 1: getting a bit excited moshing and we had a couple
- 25:31Speaker 1: of guys well injured themselves as a result of that.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So you can't you're not as you're not back.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, for sure.
- 25:40Speaker 3: It's we're not twenty something anymore. And we bounce off,
- 25:44Speaker 3: don't bounce off the floor. Are it hurts absolutely? And
- 25:50Speaker 3: you guys have got some new music coming out which
- 25:52Speaker 3: I have no doubt that we would chat again coming
- 25:55Speaker 3: when you announce that, and so that will be obviously
- 25:58Speaker 3: after you've done your little mini tour.
- 26:00Speaker 1: I think I think probably early first quarter next year,
- 26:02Speaker 1: just by the time we finished the writing of everything
- 26:05Speaker 1: and then going into a studio and finishing it, we've done.
- 26:09Speaker 1: We've got high quality Dowmos because again you can go
- 26:11Speaker 1: into Eli's studio, our drummer studio and record really great
- 26:18Speaker 1: sounds at not much cost. So you know, we probably
- 26:21Speaker 1: will go on to another studio to actually record the
- 26:25Speaker 1: album and get it mixed.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Yeah, nice, nice, and then with her after that, more
- 26:30Speaker 3: tours planned for the Yeah, we'll just.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Once the album's out, we'll tour. We are releasing this
- 26:36Speaker 1: is this, which is when it came out twenty four
- 26:40Speaker 1: came out only on CD. We are releasing a vinyl
- 26:43Speaker 1: version for this next tour, so excellent getting vinyl sort
- 26:48Speaker 1: of sort of at the moment. It'll probably a double
- 26:51Speaker 1: album because you can't fit. If you try and put
- 26:55Speaker 1: too much on a side of an album in vinyl,
- 26:58Speaker 1: you kind of don't get the great sound CALLI will
- 27:00Speaker 1: probably a double album, but with some rare tracks and
- 27:05Speaker 1: maybe some live tracks included. So yeah, we're looking forward.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:08Speaker 3: I love the revival of vinyl because I mean, on
- 27:11Speaker 3: a good sound system, but it sounds better.
- 27:12Speaker 2: It does to me.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I like the fact that when you buy a record
- 27:16Speaker 1: you get something that's.
- 27:17Speaker 2: No true physical that you can hold on to.
- 27:20Speaker 3: This conversation with another artist for a few weeks back
- 27:22Speaker 3: in you know, I remember like opening the cover and
- 27:24Speaker 3: taking it out and looking at the lyrics and even
- 27:26Speaker 3: just the smell of like a new album.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. I mean when when it all just comes
- 27:30Speaker 1: on Spotify or some streaming platforms.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's you feel ripped. It's like what have I
- 27:36Speaker 2: paid for? Really?
- 27:37Speaker 1: Yeah, And the younger crowd is starting to get back.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Into vinyl and oh they absolutely and even cassettes. You know.
- 27:43Speaker 3: I was at a screen theater gig there in a
- 27:45Speaker 3: few weeks back and they got the sets out and
- 27:47Speaker 3: which is really cool. And I've seen a couple of
- 27:49Speaker 3: other bands do it. So again, that's some just a
- 27:51Speaker 3: nostalgia things.
- 27:52Speaker 1: That's right, Yeah, because I would have thought cassettes you'd
- 27:54Speaker 1: struggle to find a cassette player.
- 27:56Speaker 2: That probably.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I'm sure there's still some floating aroun like when Sony Walk,
- 28:01Speaker 3: when I had I cast that one for ages, I
- 28:03Speaker 3: found my Discman, those things are worth a fortune' I'm like, wow, yeah,
- 28:09Speaker 3: I know. I remember my youngest when she was little,
- 28:11Speaker 3: she goes, Mummy, what's the cassette?
- 28:13Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh god, scary, scary. Yeah.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Well, look, thank you, as I said, for coming and
- 28:20Speaker 3: chatting with us and no doubt we will chat again
- 28:22Speaker 3: in the coming future. When you got the album in
- 28:25Speaker 3: next year and bring on October.
- 28:28Speaker 2: I'm much looking forward to it.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Yeah, we're looking forward to it.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely see then. Excellent
