- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:13Speaker 1: conservation always wins. I am your special guest host, Mark Kenyon,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and this week I am joined by Randall, Giannis, Omar, Spencer, Laura,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and Corey. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions
- 0:26Speaker 1: from MeatEater's four main verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and cooking. And there's a prize. MeatEater will donate $ 500
- 0:34Speaker 1: to the conservation organization of the winners choosing MeatEater trivia. Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 1: pretty incredible, huh, Spencer?
- 0:41Speaker 2: Can I already ask you a question?
- 0:42Speaker 1: Yeah, sure.
- 0:43Speaker 2: How did you get to be the special guest host?
- 0:47Speaker 1: I wrote the script.
- 0:47Speaker 3: You put that in the script. That's how you become
- 0:50Speaker 3: the special.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I did a poor job of introducing myself.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Brody needs to be special. Super special.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Who's the show brought to you by? The show is
- 1:00Speaker 1: brought to you by one of our favorite beers, Spencer.
- 1:03Speaker 1: That is Bush Light. Bush Light, head for the mountains.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We're going to kick off today's episode. We're going to
- 1:11Speaker 1: get right into it. We've got a great mailbag question
- 1:13Speaker 1: for you today. And if you, a listener, have a
- 1:16Speaker 1: question you want us, the trivia crew, to answer, you
- 1:19Speaker 1: can send your question over to the, where did he
- 1:21Speaker 1: send it to? Trivia at TheMeatEater.com with the subject line, mailbag.
- 1:26Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:27Speaker 1: So you guys ready for the mailbag question?
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yes, please.
- 1:29Speaker 1: It is from Jace. Jace is from Wisconsin. And he says,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I quote, on my commute to and from the office,
- 1:35Speaker 1: there's a really convenient piece of public that e-scouting has
- 1:38Speaker 1: produced some promising whitetail signs.
- 1:40Speaker 2: The problem?
- 1:41Speaker 1: There's a river that runs between the parking and the
- 1:44Speaker 1: promising spots and limits access to two-thirds of the parcel.
- 1:48Speaker 1: This river is a true river. On average, it flows
- 1:50Speaker 1: with a depth of six feet, and it's pretty wide.
- 1:53Speaker 1: According to Onyx, it measures more than 20 yards across.
- 1:56Speaker 1: If I was 10 feet tall, I'd buy a pair
- 1:58Speaker 1: of waders, but at six feet, I would need to
- 2:00Speaker 1: snorkel and be soaked. Any suggestions on how to cross
- 2:04Speaker 1: this while staying reasonably dry and warm? What would you do, Laura?
- 2:09Speaker 3: Ooh, multi-sport day.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Today, you're going to go hunting, fishing, and floating with
- 2:14Speaker 1: either a canoe, a kayak, or.
- 2:16Speaker 2: A pack raft.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Or a paddle board.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Damn. Nailed it.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You could stuff it up, yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 4: There's some other things that come to mind.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Oh, please share. Truck tire tubes.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Just float across.
- 2:30Speaker 5: That's another way to get soaking wet, though.
- 2:34Speaker 2: He said he didn't want to get wet. Oh, he
- 2:35Speaker 2: said he didn't want to get wet.
- 2:36Speaker 1: The other idea I had was a life jacket.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And just jump in. See where you go. What would
- 2:43Speaker 1: the host of Wired to Hunt do? I would have
- 2:45Speaker 1: just bought like a, I brought a canoe. I love
- 2:48Speaker 1: the packraft idea. I don't own a packraft, but I've
- 2:51Speaker 1: often said that it's worth the investment for this kind
- 2:53Speaker 1: of thing. Zipline? I have a friend who owns a
- 2:56Speaker 1: piece of land in Iowa who was threatened to put
- 2:58Speaker 1: in a zipline. to a special stand location for years.
- 3:02Speaker 5: I think the big thing here is that the fella
- 3:04Speaker 5: shouldn't take this as a bad thing. If he's got
- 3:08Speaker 5: a sweet spot that has this extra hurdle, a lot
- 3:12Speaker 5: of lazy folks aren't going to go and hunt there,
- 3:14Speaker 5: and he should be excited.
- 3:15Speaker 2: About having this spot.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Get some used watercraft.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I bought a foldable kayak a couple years ago, and
- 3:22Speaker 3: I'm a huge fan. It breaks down to be the
- 3:23Speaker 3: size of a suitcase, and so even if this dude
- 3:26Speaker 3: drives a car, it can fit in the trunk of
- 3:28Speaker 3: his car real easy. It's the kind of thing that
- 3:30Speaker 3: he could leave, hide it under a bush somewhere on
- 3:34Speaker 3: the bank if he's planning to hunt all week, the
- 3:36Speaker 3: first week in November. I think a foldable kayak would
- 3:39Speaker 3: be perfect for this job.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Is that like that origami style? Yes. Is it like
- 3:42Speaker 1: Oru or something like that?
- 3:43Speaker 3: Oru is the main brand. That's the one I have.
- 3:46Speaker 3: You can get them for less than $ 300 if you
- 3:48Speaker 3: wait for Black Friday, Memorial Day sale, whatever. It seems
- 3:53Speaker 3: like the job that he needs to accomplish, that's the
- 3:56Speaker 3: tool for it.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Great idea.
- 3:58Speaker 4: A friend of ours, her dad bought a prefabricated bridge
- 4:03Speaker 4: on the internet.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 2: BYOB.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Bring your own bridge. That's another option. Can only
- 4:08Speaker 1: imagine how much that costs.
- 4:10Speaker 4: I don't know. It doesn't seem very well built.
- 4:12Speaker 1: No.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I've got a buddy who retrieved his bull elk using
- 4:18Speaker 1: a paddle board, and I think he could do that
- 4:21Speaker 1: with his whitetail.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Wow.
- 4:23Speaker 3: That looks like stagnant water to me. This dude's talking
- 4:26Speaker 3: about crossing a river.
- 4:27Speaker 1: A river runs through it.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You can take a paddleboard down a river. Rope swing.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Hot air balloon. Long jumping.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Moral of the story, Jace, is that there are many
- 4:39Speaker 1: options at your disposal. And I would view this, like
- 4:42Speaker 1: you said, Randall, or Yanni, I would view this as
- 4:44Speaker 1: a feature, not a bug. This is a good thing.
- 4:46Speaker 1: That's going to be harder for people to get there. So,
- 4:51Speaker 1: today's episode, uh, There's no Shelby Index, of course, or
- 4:55Speaker 1: Kylie Index in this case with my wife.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Why not?
- 4:58Speaker 1: Well, because I've been gone all of the last week
- 5:01Speaker 1: on various hunting and other work trips. And so if
- 5:03Speaker 1: I were to ask my wife for a favor right now,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I would probably get kicked. So she was not going
- 5:07Speaker 1: to be doing this.
- 5:07Speaker 2: She wouldn't look at this as something fun to do
- 5:10Speaker 2: after dinner.
- 5:10Speaker 5: No.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And she's also, she's sick and one of my kids
- 5:13Speaker 1: is sick. So no.
- 5:15Speaker 2: No Index.
- 5:16Speaker 1: No Kylie Index.
- 5:16Speaker 2: So you guys, take a guess.
- 5:18Speaker 3: How would she do, you think?
- 5:21Speaker 1: She would do great.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Nice.
- 5:22Speaker 1: She would do great.
- 5:23Speaker 2: There you go. Good answer.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I almost got the wrong one there. She knows it all.
- 5:30Speaker 1: But I will tell you, I was told I was
- 5:31Speaker 1: too hard last time around, so I tried to be easier.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Okay. I like that.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But I do think that the first question, people will
- 5:39Speaker 1: think that's not the case.
- 5:41Speaker 4: So listen past the first question, everybody.
- 5:44Speaker 2: It's going to get better. Mark promises.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I promise. So Phil, hit the drop. Oh.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Everything.
- 5:56Speaker 1: How's that? You stand to win everything.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Game on, suckers!
- 6:07Speaker 1: Alright, so question number one. And this is our listener
- 6:12Speaker 1: question of the day, right out the gate. It's a
- 6:15Speaker 1: special listener question of the day because I actually got
- 6:18Speaker 1: to spend time with this listener. Just a couple days ago,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and he brought me a little something, which will be
- 6:24Speaker 1: part of this question. So our special listener today is
- 6:27Speaker 1: Jon Stewart. The topic for this first question is natural history.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Natural history, it's a multiple choice question. Here we go.
- 6:36Speaker 1: You're going to put it up on the screen for me?
- 6:39Speaker 6: I usually wait until Spencer starts reading the question, and
- 6:41Speaker 6: then I do a really cool transition that only the
- 6:43Speaker 6: YouTube audience sees.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Well, then we're just going to go with it. Yeah.
- 6:47Speaker 1: No matter how this mineral sample is shattered or broken,
- 6:51Speaker 1: and I'm holding this piece of mineral in my hand
- 6:53Speaker 1: right now, if you were watching on camera, no matter
- 6:56Speaker 1: how this is shattered or broken, it will naturally split
- 6:59Speaker 1: into smaller slanted rhombus shapes. Is it A, muscovite, B, calcite, C, quartz,
- 7:09Speaker 1: or D, gypsum? And for those who are listening and
- 7:12Speaker 1: can't see this, it is a four-sided... shiny, kind of crystalline.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Let me lick that thing.
- 7:20Speaker 1: You may not lick this.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Can we hand it down here?
- 7:23Speaker 1: Sure. Be very careful. This is a special sample. I'll
- 7:27Speaker 1: tell you more about it soon. I'll read this again.
- 7:32Speaker 1: No matter how this mineral is shattered or broken, so
- 7:36Speaker 1: you could say rock, mineral, it will naturally split into
- 7:40Speaker 1: smaller slanted rhombus shapes. What is it?
- 7:47Speaker 2: I know one up there that it's not.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Muscovite, calcite, quartz, or gypsum? Well, no clues, sorry. No clues. Spencer,
- 8:01Speaker 1: do you feel confident? No.
- 8:02Speaker 3: No, I wish I did.
- 8:03Speaker 1: This was your softball.
- 8:05Speaker 3: I know. This is the category with Spencer, and I
- 8:07Speaker 3: don't think I'm going to get it.
- 8:09Speaker 1: So when Yanni hosted, all of his questions were softballs
- 8:12Speaker 1: of Brody? And I thought that it would be polite
- 8:15Speaker 1: to give the usual host the softball.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I don't think that's polite, but.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'm trying to help out my buddy Spencer. Yeah, so
- 8:23Speaker 1: no matter how you break this sucker, it will always
- 8:25Speaker 1: break into something similar to this. A rhombus-type shape.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Give me a hammer.
- 8:31Speaker 1: He did ask. Nobody tests that theory. Because this came
- 8:36Speaker 1: all the way from a very exotic location.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Oh, it's exotic.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Now I have to change my answer. Not necessarily.
- 8:45Speaker 1: That just happens to be where this one is. How
- 8:47Speaker 1: locally exotic was it? So, does anybody have an answer
- 8:51Speaker 1: that they're ready to go with? How are we doing here?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I'll stick with it. What the heck?
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah, same. Okay, everybody good? All right. Randall says, Muscovite, Giannis' Quartz,
- 9:02Speaker 1: Omar Quartz, Spencer, Gypsum, Laura Quartz, Corey Quartz. The correct
- 9:08Speaker 1: answer is... calcite zero percent this is calcite starting with
- 9:16Speaker 1: a zero percenter anybody's game so uh if anyone was
- 9:21Speaker 1: paying attention to our auction house of oddities this uh
- 9:24Speaker 1: summer we auctioned off a truck steve's dad's shitty old
- 9:27Speaker 1: truck full of badass hunting gear the winner of that
- 9:30Speaker 1: truck is john stewart and i delivered him that truck
- 9:34Speaker 1: this past weekend And so in our conversations, he said, hey,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I've got this question that I've always wanted you guys
- 9:40Speaker 1: to ask, and I will give you the sample to
- 9:42Speaker 1: take to the show. So calcite, interestingly relevant to us
- 9:46Speaker 1: that hunt and do stuff with optics. Calcite has perfect
- 9:49Speaker 1: rhombohedral cleavage, resulting in this distinct slanted cube appearance. Due
- 9:53Speaker 1: to its ability to split light into two rays, transparent calcite,
- 9:58Speaker 1: such as this piece of Iceland's Ooh, cool. So... Pretty
- 10:12Speaker 1: interesting stuff. A little piece of calcite right here for you.
- 10:14Speaker 5: What a little present that was for you. Last weekend,
- 10:17Speaker 5: you're probably in the hot seat. You don't have all
- 10:21Speaker 5: your questions written out, and you roll over there, and
- 10:23Speaker 5: this guy's like, hey, here's everything you need for a
- 10:26Speaker 5: great trivia question.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It was a wonderful gift that I very much appreciated.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Should have let me lick it.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Sorry about that. Question number two. The topic is hunting.
- 10:38Speaker 1: In the iconic hunting-themed song titled Fredbear, performed by Ted Nugent,
- 10:44Speaker 1: name one of the animal species that Fredbear claims will
- 10:47Speaker 1: cleanse the soul if you tangle with it. Man, I
- 10:52Speaker 1: can only remember the chorus right now.
- 10:54Speaker 4: All right.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Iconic hunting-themed song called Fredbear. Has everybody heard the song? Sure. Yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 1: All right. Laura, have you heard it?
- 11:04Speaker 5: No.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Sorry, Laura.
- 11:06Speaker 2: It's all right.
- 11:06Speaker 4: This is not my game.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Name one of the animals that Fred Bear claims will
- 11:10Speaker 1: cleanse the soul if you tangle with it. We were
- 11:17Speaker 1: driving the kids to school this morning, and without me
- 11:20Speaker 1: prompting at all, this song was requested by my son.
- 11:23Speaker 1: That's beautiful. That was perfect timing. We just saw some
- 11:28Speaker 1: nice whitetail bucks in a field, and Everett's like, Dad,
- 11:31Speaker 1: let's listen to Fred Bear.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Is that a hint there? I don't think my, uh,
- 11:38Speaker 2: kids have ever heard that song.
- 11:39Speaker 5: I'll have to play that for Mabel on the way home.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You should. Classic. It's a part of our like hunting
- 11:49Speaker 1: season rotation with the kids. They like Fred bear. They
- 11:51Speaker 1: like the 30 point buck, um, hunting, fishing, loving, loving
- 11:56Speaker 1: every day. Buck fever. It's a little bit more.
- 12:00Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Buck fever.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Deep cut. There's an album that, uh, Rhett Atkins and
- 12:06Speaker 1: some guys from the Realtree crew put together. Michael Waddell.
- 12:11Speaker 1: It was like a Bone Collector album or something. It
- 12:13Speaker 1: was actually a good song. What about Nuck If You Buck?
- 12:18Speaker 1: The kids haven't heard that one yet. Alright, are we
- 12:20Speaker 1: all set here, guys? Alright, Randall. Says Grizzly Bear, Giannis Grizzly,
- 12:26Speaker 1: Omar Grizzly, Spencer Whitetail, Laura Whitetail, Corey Whitetail.
- 12:30Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Acceptable answers are Grizzly Bear, Polar Bear, Brown Bear.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Fred Bear, the song, was included on Ted Nugent's Spirit
- 12:40Speaker 1: of the Wild album, which he released in 1995. It's,
- 12:44Speaker 1: of course, an ode to Fred Bear, the famous bow
- 12:46Speaker 1: hunter and bow maker. At the very end of that song,
- 12:49Speaker 1: about seven plus minutes in, you hear an actual recording
- 12:52Speaker 1: of Fred. And what he says in full, quote, he says,
- 12:56Speaker 1: if some of our teenage thrill seekers really want to
- 12:58Speaker 1: go out and get a thrill, let them go up
- 13:00Speaker 1: into the Northwest and tangle with the grizzly bear, the
- 13:03Speaker 1: polar bear, and the brown bear. It'll cleanse the soul. Wow. Yeah,
- 13:07Speaker 1: you wouldn't tangle with a whitetail.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 1: That's just going to cause anxiety. It's not going to
- 13:14Speaker 1: cleanse the soul. If he wanted to, he would. Question
- 13:19Speaker 1: number three. The topic is wildlife. This North American bird,
- 13:26Speaker 1: believed to be extinct since the mid-20th century, but still
- 13:29Speaker 1: rumored to exist in places like Louisiana and Arkansas, is
- 13:33Speaker 1: known as the Lord God Bird. What is it?
- 13:41Speaker 6: The reason I started waiting until Spencer would read the
- 13:44Speaker 6: question before I'd switch to the next slide is because
- 13:46Speaker 6: a lot of the times I would switch to it.
- 13:48Speaker 6: Spencer would say, like, question six. I'd switch to it,
- 13:50Speaker 6: and then Steve would be like, you know, and then
- 13:51Speaker 6: he'd jump in, and then the question would be on
- 13:53Speaker 6: the screen, and everyone would read it, and I'd have
- 13:54Speaker 6: to jump back, which is, it's not much of a
- 13:56Speaker 6: problem now that Steve quit the company and doesn't play
- 13:58Speaker 6: trivia anymore.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Here's the question again. This North American bird, believed to
- 14:05Speaker 1: be extinct since the mid-20th century, but still rumored to
- 14:09Speaker 1: exist in places like Louisiana and Arkansas, is known as
- 14:13Speaker 1: the Lord God Bird.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Anybody know this, like, for sure?
- 14:19Speaker 3: I think I do.
- 14:20Speaker 4: I feel better about my answer now.
- 14:22Speaker 3: I looked at Giannis'..
- 14:25Speaker 1: All right. Well, all the answers in? Yep. Randall?
- 14:28Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
- 14:30Speaker 1: We've got the ivory-billed woodpecker from Randall. Giannis' is the ivory.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Omar's is the dodo. Spencer's got the ivory bill. Laura's
- 14:36Speaker 1: got the passenger pigeon. Corey's got the ivory-billed woodpecker. The
- 14:40Speaker 1: correct answer is ivory-billed woodpecker. That is the largest woodpecker
- 14:47Speaker 1: species north of Mexico, the third largest in the world.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And it was just kind of widely marveled at by
- 14:54Speaker 1: many people, including actually Theodore Roosevelt when he was on
- 14:57Speaker 1: a hunting trip down in Louisiana. I think on that
- 15:00Speaker 1: bear hunting trip, he wrote about how impressive this bird was.
- 15:02Speaker 1: But widespread destruction of their old growth forest habitat caused
- 15:08Speaker 1: massive population declines in the 1800s, with many thinking they
- 15:12Speaker 1: were extinct by, like I said, the middle of the
- 15:14Speaker 1: 20th century. But in 2004, a kayaker in Arkansas saw
- 15:19Speaker 1: what he believed to be an ivory bill in a
- 15:21Speaker 1: cypress swamp. And this kicked off this mad frenzy of
- 15:24Speaker 1: scientists and naturalists hunting for the remaining members of the species.
- 15:29Speaker 1: The teams searched more than 523,000 acres across eight different states.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Many still believe that it is out there, but there
- 15:38Speaker 1: was never definitive evidence found.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Maybe they saw Sasquatch instead.
- 15:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 3: I think that name was because when people would see them,
- 15:47Speaker 3: they were so stunning. They'd be like, my lord, good god.
- 15:50Speaker 3: That was how they got that name.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Is this an episode of the Gunfighters?
- 15:57Speaker 6: You damn son of a bitch.
- 16:00Speaker 2: My lord.
- 16:02Speaker 1: You guys have all seen Pileated Woodpeckers? So this is
- 16:05Speaker 1: supposed to be that on steroids. Tough bird.
- 16:09Speaker 3: A lot of meat on them.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Speaking of meat, I ate woodchuck. when I visited the
- 16:16Speaker 1: listener question submitter, John. He got me woodchuck nuggets.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Damn. He was showing off.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Very good.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Has anybody eaten woodchuck?
- 16:25Speaker 2: No.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Chuck nuggets. That was how he, like, teased the trip
- 16:30Speaker 1: as I was coming, you know, planning it out. He's like,
- 16:32Speaker 1: you're going to really want to get here. We're going
- 16:34Speaker 1: to eat chuck nuggets.
- 16:35Speaker 2: And he was right.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Do you dip him in anything?
- 16:41Speaker 1: Did you dip them in anything? We had like sriracha,
- 16:44Speaker 1: some kind of like Chick-fil-A sauce, some stuff like that.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It was great. And that's a perfect segue into the
- 16:51Speaker 1: next question. Question number four, the topic is cooking.
- 16:54Speaker 3: All right, ketchup.
- 16:56Speaker 1: God, that was good. That was a great segue.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Well done.
- 17:01Speaker 1: What is the popularly used name for a meal of
- 17:04Speaker 1: fish to be cooked and eaten on land immediately after
- 17:08Speaker 1: leaving the water? which is also the name of a
- 17:10Speaker 1: breading and batter mix brand. What do you call a
- 17:18Speaker 1: meal of fish to be cooked and eaten immediately upon
- 17:22Speaker 1: leaving the water? What would you call it? And it's
- 17:26Speaker 1: also the name of a brand. Man, I'm going to
- 17:29Speaker 1: go with my gut on this one.
- 17:30Speaker 5: I've never had a proper blank, but I have used
- 17:34Speaker 5: the batter, which I enjoy.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I've never actually had a proper... I had Jay Siemens
- 17:40Speaker 2: feed me three of these in a row.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I know.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I feel like I should go up there just to
- 17:44Speaker 2: have one of these with Jay.
- 17:45Speaker 4: Boy, that was heaven on earth.
- 17:47Speaker 1: This is good stuff.
- 17:48Speaker 4: On dry land.
- 17:49Speaker 1: This is really good stuff.
- 17:50Speaker 3: This is a good question.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer or Laura still?
- 17:53Speaker 5: I know he's got a couple of questions already that
- 17:55Speaker 5: I'm surprised that we haven't had. Just shows you the
- 17:59Speaker 5: world of hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking trivia is big.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Rich.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Rich.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Mark Kenyon's always asking me how long I'm going to
- 18:07Speaker 3: do this podcast for, and I tell him until we
- 18:08Speaker 3: run out of questions.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Or until you forget the ones that you've asked.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that could happen.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Senile.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Laura?
- 18:19Speaker 5: No.
- 18:20Speaker 1: You're going to toss the towel?
- 18:21Speaker 2: I can't.
- 18:22Speaker 1: All right, let's see what you guys got. Randall says
- 18:24Speaker 1: Shore Lunch. Yanni, Shore Lunch. Omar, Catch and Cook. Spencer,
- 18:27Speaker 1: Shore Lunch. Laura's got nothing. And Corey says Catch and Cook.
- 18:31Speaker 1: The correct answer is Shore Lunch. Ah. Sorry, guys. And
- 18:36Speaker 1: shore lunch, as far as I'm concerned, is the best
- 18:38Speaker 1: part of any catch and kill fishing trip. This is
- 18:42Speaker 1: a huge part of my upbringing as far as our
- 18:45Speaker 1: walleye and pike fishing trips up in northern Michigan and Canada.
- 18:48Speaker 1: We'd go up there for a week and every day
- 18:51Speaker 1: have shore lunch. And as many folks do, we'd fish
- 18:53Speaker 1: all morning, we'd catch a mess of walleye, pull off
- 18:56Speaker 1: at a rocky island, heat up some oil, and have
- 18:59Speaker 1: the best fresh fish you could ever imagine. Now, our
- 19:03Speaker 1: family was a Drake's. batter family.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Oh.
- 19:07Speaker 1: But of course, Shore Lunch is pretty popular.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Shore Lunch is like the Coca-Cola of fish batter.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Do you like it? It's just fine. It's good. It's
- 19:16Speaker 3: not bad. It's like a Coca-Cola. If you walked into
- 19:19Speaker 3: like a Cabela's and you wanted to buy fish batter,
- 19:21Speaker 3: I think this would have the most real estate on
- 19:23Speaker 3: the shelf.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, hold on a second.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Uh-oh.
- 19:26Speaker 1: What about Jay Seaman's brand, Catch and Cook?
- 19:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I was going to say.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I still feel like this is the most popular ubiquitous term.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Hmm. It's not what I call it. I agree with you, Corey.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Catch and cook is delicious.
- 19:41Speaker 1: But you could catch and cook anywhere. You could catch
- 19:43Speaker 1: and cook, and I could do that back at home.
- 19:46Speaker 1: This is on the water immediately. Hot ending.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Corey.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Not going to get it.
- 19:52Speaker 6: I like Mark just sticking to his guns.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yeah. Good for you.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Find, catch, and cook wherever.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Fish seasonings are sold. It's delicious. We had a shore
- 20:01Speaker 1: lunch yesterday. There wasn't fish involved in that.
- 20:03Speaker 3: That's true.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Question number five. Next. Keep her moving.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Except for that big fish I got earlier.
- 20:08Speaker 2: I'm giving myself a half a point.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You need it. I'm going to throw you another bone though, Corey.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Maybe you've got a chance here. The topic's fishing.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Fly fishing.
- 20:15Speaker 1: But not fly fishing, sorry.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Well, maybe.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I guess I shouldn't say that. It's fishing. This revolutionary
- 20:23Speaker 1: at the time bass fishing lure, first released in 1996,
- 20:26Speaker 1: is made out of soft plastic, shaped like a Bic
- 20:31Speaker 1: ballpoint pen, and typically has a unique side-to-side shimmying action
- 20:36Speaker 1: as it drifts down through the water column. What is it?
- 20:41Speaker 3: What year?
- 20:42Speaker 6: 96.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Taking me back. What revolutionary bass fishing lure made out
- 20:50Speaker 1: of soft plastic looks like a Bic ballpoint pen and
- 20:56Speaker 1: slides side to side as it drifts down?
- 20:58Speaker 2: Spencer.
- 21:00Speaker 1: What?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Do you remember?
- 21:01Speaker 3: I think I would say I'm 75% chance.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I will say this is....
- 21:08Speaker 2: Don't help them.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I feel like the Midwestern folks, the Southern folks, would
- 21:13Speaker 1: probably do better on this.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Bass boy.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Is everybody Giannis?
- 21:19Speaker 2: No, no. Give me at least two minutes.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Oh, man.
- 21:23Speaker 4: At least one.
- 21:24Speaker 3: I think the pen was part of the production of this.
- 21:27Speaker 3: They were like, I should turn that thing into a lure.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Huh.
- 21:30Speaker 4: I don't think I have the right answer.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Hmm. Everybody but Yanni is in. You guys already have
- 21:38Speaker 1: an answer? Wow.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Omar, no?
- 21:40Speaker 2: Omar doesn't have one either.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Omar, can you think of any bass fishing lure? I can.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 21:45Speaker 1: A little Gary Yamamoto.
- 21:47Speaker 4: You can only chew so long when your mouth is empty,
- 21:50Speaker 4: you know? I just don't have a lot to go
- 21:52Speaker 4: with here.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Laura, you have an answer? I don't know.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I just invented it.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Can you say it again? I think he's still chewing
- 22:01Speaker 2: on it. I'm like, I got nothing to chew here.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Just go with what I know. Mm-hmm.
- 22:05Speaker 6: It's almost as good as a fresh set of eyes.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Shaped like a Bic ballpoint pen.
- 22:12Speaker 3: No, I didn't say that. Forget I said that.
- 22:16Speaker 1: It's a soft plastic. You know what that is, right?
- 22:18Speaker 1: In a bass fishing game.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Are you being pedantic?
- 22:24Speaker 2: I don't know what that word means.
- 22:25Speaker 5: I'm just trying to figure out.
- 22:30Speaker 2: What does that mean, Randall. I was asking Mark.
- 22:34Speaker 1: While looking at Giannis?
- 22:35Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I know what that is, Mark. Oh, gosh. I'll write
- 22:43Speaker 2: something down.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Filky.
- 22:46Speaker 1: This was an all-time favorite of mine. Really?
- 22:52Speaker 2: See, I was kind of still bass fishing in 96.
- 22:55Speaker 2: A little.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Bit.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Yeah, they used this where you grew up. For sure.
- 23:02Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Yeah, my neighbor Kevin Van Dam probably is slamming him
- 23:07Speaker 5: with this lure.
- 23:08Speaker 3: The pride of Kalamazoo, right?
- 23:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:11Speaker 1: And Derek Jeter.
- 23:13Speaker 3: They produced two great Americans.
- 23:15Speaker 1: And good cereal.
- 23:17Speaker 5: And now Giannis Patel is added to that list.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Isn't Kellogg's there?
- 23:22Speaker 2: No, Battle Creek. What's the name of it? Oh, Battle Creek.
- 23:24Speaker 3: That's where Rob Van Dam is from. The best wrestler
- 23:27Speaker 3: to ever bless the ring.
- 23:31Speaker 2: What's the name of the minor league hockey team in Kalamazoo?
- 23:33Speaker 1: Name some more Michigan places.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I'll tell you who's from there.
- 23:35Speaker 2: The Wings. K-Wings. All right, Yanni.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Will Ferrell's character.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Let's get something out there. What do you got? Randall
- 23:42Speaker 1: says the Cinco. Yanni says the Banjo Minnow. Omar, you
- 23:46Speaker 1: did it. Got the Cinco. Spencer Cinco. Laura, pass, grab
- 23:50Speaker 1: her leg.
- 23:50Speaker 3: You said Gary Yamamoto.
- 23:51Speaker 1: He's right there.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Omar.
- 23:53Speaker 1: When you said the Gary Yamamoto, I'm like, wow. Because
- 23:57Speaker 1: that's who makes the Cinco. I had a.
- 23:59Speaker 2: This is.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Good era of bass fishing in May. Well, there you go.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Since done.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Nice.
- 24:03Speaker 1: So the Senko has been used for about 30 years now.
- 24:06Speaker 1: It's one of the best-selling soft plastic lures of all time.
- 24:09Speaker 1: And according to an article on Bassmaster.com, when Gary Yamamoto
- 24:13Speaker 1: was designing this lure, he started with the basic profile
- 24:16Speaker 1: of the Bic Custom Click Pen and then experimented with
- 24:19Speaker 1: some different body lengths, thicknesses, and textures to get the
- 24:22Speaker 1: lure to fall weightless at a very specific rate of
- 24:24Speaker 1: speed that he wanted while creating just the right amount
- 24:27Speaker 1: of action. And it's got this little kind of The
- 24:29Speaker 1: ends of the Bic pen on either side just do
- 24:31Speaker 1: this little jiggle as a kind of like a pendulum
- 24:34Speaker 1: swings down.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Through the water. Do you have a photo?
- 24:36Speaker 1: Oh, there it is. There it is. He also wanted
- 24:38Speaker 1: a formulation that bass would not just bite, but would
- 24:41Speaker 1: hold on to. And so the answer to the hold
- 24:43Speaker 1: on to dilemma was a high density salt impregnation distributed
- 24:48Speaker 1: evenly throughout the body of the lure. So there you go.
- 24:51Speaker 1: There's a Senko on the screen.
- 24:52Speaker 3: You can take that to any bass lake in North America,
- 24:55Speaker 3: and you'll catch something.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Not Montana.
- 24:57Speaker 3: When we had that little retreat thing, I fished that
- 25:00Speaker 3: Senko for like an hour.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Nothing. Skill issue.
- 25:03Speaker 3: A lot of guys, that's their slump buster. Wacky rig
- 25:05Speaker 3: of Senko.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Gonna catch you a bass.
- 25:07Speaker 1: So a wacky rig would be taking your big hook
- 25:09Speaker 1: and hooking it kind of right to the middle. And
- 25:11Speaker 1: then that would be like a weightless, wacky rig. Or
- 25:13Speaker 1: you could Texas rig it, which would be going to
- 25:15Speaker 1: the top with a sliding bullet sinker on top. Weedless.
- 25:18Speaker 4: We used to, when we were in junior high, we
- 25:20Speaker 4: used to sneak onto this pond where we weren't supposed
- 25:22Speaker 4: to be. And the bass were just crazy. And I'd
- 25:26Speaker 4: have a jitterbug and like 12 inches of line and
- 25:30Speaker 4: a Senko just behind the jitterbug.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Nobody has ever done that before.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Just ripping it along the edge.
- 25:35Speaker 6: I know.
- 25:35Speaker 2: It's a good idea.
- 25:36Speaker 1: I know.
- 25:36Speaker 4: I've written some saltwater tactics, you know.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But I had a trailer hook.
- 25:40Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 25:40Speaker 2: A pioneer.
- 25:41Speaker 1: So did it crush?
- 25:42Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Deadly.
- 25:44Speaker 6: I bet.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Wish I could still trespass without a guilty conscience.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Phil, now you just don't feel guilty at all when
- 25:50Speaker 3: you do it.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Can we get a scoreboard up there? I'd love to
- 25:53Speaker 1: see where things stand. We got a spread here. Wow.
- 25:58Speaker 6: Laura is not on the board as of yet. She
- 26:00Speaker 6: has zero points.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Corey has one.
- 26:02Speaker 6: And a half. And a half.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Oh, sure. Sure. Catch and cook.
- 26:07Speaker 6: Spencer, Giannis, and Omar are tied up with three and
- 26:09Speaker 6: Randall's in first place with four points.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Hmm.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Let's keep going. Huh?
- 26:18Speaker 1: Who do you think?
- 26:20Speaker 2: Anybody's game. Anybody's game.
- 26:22Speaker 3: All right.
- 26:25Speaker 1: This one, I feel like should be in the wheelhouse
- 26:27Speaker 1: for a number of people. The topic is hunting and
- 26:30Speaker 1: I can't, I might've changed the question, Phil. I don't
- 26:33Speaker 1: remember which version I gave you. So, We're going to
- 26:35Speaker 1: find out.
- 26:35Speaker 6: Okay, cool.
- 26:36Speaker 1: But according to the 2026 National Deer Association Deer Report, okay,
- 26:42Speaker 1: I made it easier on the screen, so I'll do that. Okay,
- 26:45Speaker 1: according to blah, blah, blah, the Deer Report, name one
- 26:48Speaker 1: of the top three states with the highest whitetail buck
- 26:51Speaker 1: harvest for the 2024 hunting season. This is the most
- 26:56Speaker 1: recent data. Give me one of the top three whitetail
- 27:00Speaker 1: states for buck harvest. That's the question. I was originally
- 27:04Speaker 1: going to make you pick one of the top two,
- 27:06Speaker 1: but I thought... This is better. Yeah.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 27:11Speaker 1: You're welcome. One of the top three states for whitetail
- 27:14Speaker 1: buck harvest according to the 2026 National Deer Association Deer Report.
- 27:23Speaker 1: You guys feel pretty confident. Everybody's got an answer except
- 27:25Speaker 1: for Spencer.
- 27:26Speaker 3: I'm just trying to show off and write down all
- 27:28Speaker 3: three and then just pick my actual answer.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Okay, I wondered about that.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Is that allowed?
- 27:33Speaker 1: No. Because what if you just wrote... I'm circling.
- 27:36Speaker 2: He has to circle.
- 27:39Speaker 1: He writes 32 states down.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Okay.
- 27:41Speaker 6: Steve will often do that, but that's just to show
- 27:44Speaker 6: if he is wrong, he's hoping that you can see
- 27:46Speaker 6: that he was close. He almost got it.
- 27:49Speaker 1: All right. Let's see what you got. Please reveal. Randall
- 27:54Speaker 1: says Texas, Giannis, Wisconsin. Omar says Iowa. Spencer says Wisconsin,
- 27:59Speaker 1: but he's also throwing some show-off moves there. Laura says Michigan,
- 28:02Speaker 1: and Corey says Wisconsin. Acceptable answers would be Texas, Pennsylvania.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Or Wisconsin.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Move.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Mark, tell people what I had here. You had all three.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Spencer threw a perfect game right there. But you circled
- 28:19Speaker 1: number three on the list.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Okay, so who do you think is number one?
- 28:27Speaker 2: Wisconsin.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Wisconsin.
- 28:28Speaker 3: And then PA and then Texas. That would be my guess.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Wisconsin. Texas. Texas. I'm going to go, yeah, Texas. Texas.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Randall says Texas.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Laura? Pennsylvania.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Pennsylvania, Corey. All right, number one is Texas by orders
- 28:41Speaker 1: of magnitude. Texas killed $ 425, 529 during that most recent year.
- 28:50Speaker 1: The runners-up, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and my home state of Michigan,
- 28:54Speaker 1: were all less than half of that total.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Wow.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Texas also tops the charts for antlerless deer with
- 29:01Speaker 1: 411,480 harvested. So they are killing a lot.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Texas is also 10 times the size of those other states.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Big place.
- 29:11Speaker 4: That factored into my calculus.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Yeah, the Element boys probably killed 100 of them here
- 29:16Speaker 5: in 2024.
- 29:16Speaker 1: That very well could be. I wouldn't put it past them.
- 29:20Speaker 3: When I drive to Texas to hunt, when I get
- 29:22Speaker 3: to the Texas border, I'm like, damn, I'm only halfway there.
- 29:26Speaker 3: That's how big that dump state is.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Not a dump state.
- 29:28Speaker 4: I love it.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Too much driving through it, though.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I got another state question for you.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Oh, great. Yay. Number seven.
- 29:35Speaker 1: The topic is conservation. Which state is home... to the
- 29:40Speaker 1: largest animal crossing overpass in North America? Choices are... Up
- 29:50Speaker 1: to you, my friend. Top three. What state is home
- 29:53Speaker 1: to the largest animal crossing overpass? My kids call them
- 29:58Speaker 1: wildlife bridges. They love it when we go underneath them.
- 30:04Speaker 1: How many have your kids gone under? They frequently go
- 30:07Speaker 1: under two of them.
- 30:09Speaker 3: Is it the largest?
- 30:11Speaker 1: I can't tell you that. I hope it's not my
- 30:16Speaker 1: home state.
- 30:18Speaker 2: No, it won't be. Where did you grow up?
- 30:21Speaker 1: They don't care about wildlife.
- 30:26Speaker 3: I saw a trail cam picture from one of these recently,
- 30:28Speaker 3: but it was the Inverse of it. It's like the
- 30:30Speaker 3: under the interstate one that they do. And they would
- 30:35Speaker 3: set up cameras and they're just like monitor who's using
- 30:37Speaker 3: it or whatever. And there was somebody sleeping in there,
- 30:40Speaker 3: probably like an unhoused person. And they had a bear
- 30:43Speaker 3: walk through just like 10 yards from them. And they
- 30:45Speaker 3: didn't even acknowledge each other. The dude sleeping didn't wake up.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Bear didn't look at him. And like nobody would have
- 30:51Speaker 3: had known that happened without that trail camera.
- 30:53Speaker 1: That's amazing. They're talking about trying to put one of
- 30:57Speaker 1: these heading up to Big Sky. That's a massive area
- 31:04Speaker 1: of wildlife collisions there.
- 31:05Speaker 4: In the canyon?
- 31:05Speaker 1: Just before going in, I believe. There's also a big
- 31:10Speaker 1: study heading down through Paradise Valley. They've been trying to
- 31:14Speaker 1: find where to build some of these over or under passes.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I've got some suggestions.
- 31:19Speaker 3: I feel like these always have to be married with
- 31:23Speaker 3: big fences. The drive to Big Sky doesn't seem like
- 31:26Speaker 3: the place where you'd like put up a long, big
- 31:29Speaker 3: fence to funnel everybody to these overpasses.
- 31:32Speaker 1: That is the downside of this, is that you've got
- 31:34Speaker 1: the fences. Does everybody have an answer? Yep. All right,
- 31:37Speaker 1: let's reveal.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Go ahead and reveal your answer.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Randall says Wyoming. Yanni says California. Omar says Colorado. Spencer, Colorado. Laura, Wyoming. Corey, Michigan.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Question mark.
- 31:54Speaker 1: The correct answer is.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Colorado. Nicely done, Omar.
- 31:59Speaker 1: All right, so get this. Don't laugh at my answer.
- 32:02Speaker 1: By one measure, an estimated 1 million to 2 million
- 32:05Speaker 1: crashes between motor vehicles and large animals, such as deer,
- 32:09Speaker 1: occur every year in the United States. 1 to 2
- 32:11Speaker 1: million every single year. And that accounts for approximately 200
- 32:16Speaker 1: human deaths and 26,000 injuries. And on the wildlife side
- 32:21Speaker 1: of things, Car collisions are now the single largest source
- 32:24Speaker 1: of land-based vertebrate mortality in the nation.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Ooh. Yeah.
- 32:29Speaker 1: That said, lots of momentum and research and progress on
- 32:33Speaker 1: trying to deal with that. Lots of new projects such
- 32:35Speaker 1: as this underway building wildlife overpasses or underpasses, as you
- 32:39Speaker 1: were describing, Spencer. That's exciting. This particular project in Colorado...
- 32:45Speaker 1: is a wildlife bridge that is 200 feet wide and
- 32:48Speaker 1: 209 feet long, crossing six lanes of traffic. The bridge
- 32:53Speaker 1: was completed in December 2025. You can see a picture
- 32:56Speaker 1: of it right there on the screen. And it's part
- 32:58Speaker 1: of a broader set of projects addressing wildlife crossings along
- 33:02Speaker 1: an entire 18-mile-long stretch of Interstate 25. And a recent
- 33:07Speaker 1: report shows that since these new crossings were established, wildlife
- 33:10Speaker 1: collisions are down more than 90%. Wow. So it's working.
- 33:16Speaker 1: And now there's another mega project like this underway in
- 33:18Speaker 1: California as well. And that might be the new biggest
- 33:21Speaker 1: whenever that's completed. What part?
- 33:23Speaker 6: I think it's right outside of LA. Cal's been talking
- 33:26Speaker 6: about it for a while.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Very expensive.
- 33:28Speaker 3: But if you're preventing all these deer from getting hit
- 33:31Speaker 3: and wrecking up cars. Probably pencil out a few decades.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Well, the cool thing about these is that you've got
- 33:37Speaker 1: different angles of support. You have people who just care
- 33:40Speaker 1: about human safety, and then there's the wildlife conservation side.
- 33:43Speaker 1: And insurance agencies like it because it reduces car damage.
- 33:46Speaker 1: So it's a win-win-win.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Moving on.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Question number eight. We're going international, my friends. The topic
- 33:55Speaker 1: is fishing. Here we go. Name one of the country's
- 34:01Speaker 1: in which Taman, the largest member of the salmonid family,
- 34:06Speaker 1: can be found. Name at least one of the countries
- 34:12Speaker 1: in which Taman can be found. This is a fish
- 34:16Speaker 1: that is the largest member of the salmonid family. Corey's
- 34:20Speaker 1: very happy about this one.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Corey.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Wrong continent.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Do you want to fish for these someday? Yeah, sure,
- 34:25Speaker 1: let's go. Yes. We've got to figure out a way
- 34:27Speaker 1: to do a meat eater film. Chase and Taman. Let's
- 34:30Speaker 1: chat later.
- 34:31Speaker 6: All right.
- 34:33Speaker 1: This would be a good one. Has anybody seen one
- 34:35Speaker 1: of these? Do we know what it looks like?
- 34:36Speaker 3: I ate one.
- 34:38Speaker 2: No, you didn't.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Shore lunch? I can't tell if he's full of shit
- 34:44Speaker 1: or not. I can't tell you. You really did?
- 34:48Speaker 3: Now I think he did eat one.
- 34:49Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 34:50Speaker 3: The old wolf fish.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Okay, so Randall knows what's up. Have you seen pictures,
- 34:55Speaker 1: the rest of you? Of me eating it?
- 34:57Speaker 2: No. No photographic evidence.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Everybody in? Alright, that was fast. Let's reveal. Randall, Slovenia, Giannis, Mongolia, Omar, Mexico, Spencer, Russia, Laura, Peru, Corey, Mongolia.
- 35:16Speaker 1: The correct answers did not include Slovenia, according to my research.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Correct answers would be Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Japan, Korea, or Mongolia.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Is this not the same as the hookan? No. Oh, sorry,
- 35:34Speaker 1: my friend.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 35:36Speaker 1: I was trying to get fancy.
- 35:37Speaker 4: I just screwed myself up.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you could have said China, Russia, Mongolia, Japan, Korea,
- 35:42Speaker 1: or Kazakhstan.
- 35:45Speaker 3: That's too bad.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Give yourself a half point.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Oh, he's going to Google.
- 35:47Speaker 4: No, no, it's fine.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Google it. Shut up, Spencer.
- 35:51Speaker 1: He can't spell Kazakhstan.
- 35:55Speaker 4: No, yeah, I'm thinking of something different.
- 35:58Speaker 1: They call them this. They call them what? They call
- 36:02Speaker 1: them that.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Yeah, they were calling them timon when I was over there.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Interesting. Well, these fish, as I mentioned, are the largest
- 36:09Speaker 1: relatives of salmon and trout. They can live over 30
- 36:12Speaker 1: years long. They can reach 6 feet in length, can
- 36:14Speaker 1: be over 100 pounds, and they can be caught on
- 36:17Speaker 1: a fly rod, if you can believe it. Popular presentations
- 36:21Speaker 1: include the use of really big articulated streamers or smaller
- 36:25Speaker 1: foam gurgler-style flies on top. I think both would be
- 36:29Speaker 1: a lot of fun. bucket list fish right there.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Same genus.
- 36:34Speaker 5: If I go, I'm going to fish a red squirrel pattern.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Damn, I thought I was just trying to be... I'm
- 36:39Speaker 3: going to throw a Meps.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Can we get a scoreboard update, Phil? We're getting close.
- 36:44Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Whoa.
- 36:46Speaker 2: We've got a game.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Spencer is coming in here towards the end. I try
- 36:51Speaker 1: to get fancy.
- 36:51Speaker 6: Yeah, Google it is one of the best things that's.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Been said.
- 37:01Speaker 6: Let's just go to the top players. Spencer is now
- 37:04Speaker 6: in first place with six. Right behind him are Randall
- 37:06Speaker 6: and Giannis with five. Omar has four.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Everybody else is putting in a great effort.
- 37:13Speaker 6: They're here.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Thanks. I woke up this morning.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Question nine. The topic is public lands. Did President Ulysses S.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Grant create the first national park, national forest, or national
- 37:30Speaker 1: wildlife refuge? Did President Grant create the first national park,
- 37:42Speaker 1: national forest, Or Wildlife Refuge. Mmm.
- 37:53Speaker 5: 33.33 an on chance here for O'Reilly.
- 37:59Speaker 2: How'd you do, Randall?
- 38:01Speaker 1: He's got it.
- 38:01Speaker 2: I got it.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Mmm.
- 38:03Speaker 4: Just think about when the first of these was created.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Ah, ah, ah, come on.
- 38:09Speaker 4: I'm just explaining how one would think through the question.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Mmm.
- 38:14Speaker 1: I'm so mad. You're still mad about the last one? Yeah,
- 38:17Speaker 1: I tried to get cutesy.
- 38:19Speaker 4: They kept calling hookan timon when I was over there.
- 38:25Speaker 4: My friend's got a commercial fishing operation and he's getting
- 38:29Speaker 4: us timon for dinner.
- 38:31Speaker 3: So we ate a hookan, not a timon. Well, how
- 38:34Speaker 3: did that taste? Tell us about it.
- 38:36Speaker 4: I don't remember.
- 38:36Speaker 3: It was delicious. Regale me with all the details. It's delicious.
- 38:41Speaker 2: It's the bait and switch.
- 38:42Speaker 1: The old catch and cook.
- 38:44Speaker 3: The old catch and switch and cook, sure.
- 38:46Speaker 1: That's stupid.
- 38:50Speaker 3: What were you going to say if you didn't tell?
- 38:51Speaker 4: Mongolia.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Everybody knows Mongolia. I just thought Mongolia was too easy
- 38:55Speaker 1: and silly.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Man. That's the only thing that anybody knows. I know.
- 39:02Speaker 3: I know. I was thinking of Arapaima, and I think
- 39:05Speaker 3: I still even had the wrong country. Yeah.
- 39:09Speaker 1: What did you say?
- 39:09Speaker 3: What did you write down?
- 39:10Speaker 6: Peru.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I said Mexico.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Alright, is everybody in?
- 39:16Speaker 4: One in doubt.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Reveal your answers. Randall says National Park, Giannis National Forest,
- 39:23Speaker 1: Omar Park, Spencer Park, Laura, Wildlife Refuge, Corey, Wildlife Refuge.
- 39:28Speaker 1: The correct answer is National Park. Now, Spencer, you thought
- 39:32Speaker 1: the first National Park was in Michigan?
- 39:33Speaker 3: I thought it was an island there, right?
- 39:35Speaker 2: No. Oh, I thought you were just teasing Mark.
- 39:38Speaker 3: I thought there was an island there that was the
- 39:40Speaker 3: first one.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Spencer, you got too cute. The correct answer is National Park.
- 39:45Speaker 1: The first National Park is Yellowstone National Park right here
- 39:49Speaker 1: in our backyard. On March 1st, 1872, President Grant signed
- 39:54Speaker 1: the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law, making it
- 39:58Speaker 1: not just America's first, but the world's first national park.
- 40:03Speaker 1: That act says in part that the headwaters of the
- 40:06Speaker 1: Yellowstone River is hereby reserved and withdrawn from settlement, occupancy
- 40:10Speaker 1: or sale and dedicated and set apart as a public
- 40:13Speaker 1: park or pleasuring ground for the benefit and the enjoyment
- 40:17Speaker 1: of the people. You can still see those last words
- 40:20Speaker 1: right there over top of the iconic arch at the
- 40:23Speaker 1: entranceway to the north part of the park, Giannis. Good
- 40:27Speaker 1: for us.
- 40:27Speaker 2: It's been a while since I've been down there.
- 40:31Speaker 1: I was on my trip delivering this truck and I
- 40:34Speaker 1: got a photo from my wife. The three of them
- 40:37Speaker 1: went and did a without dad expedition through Yellowstone, hiked
- 40:41Speaker 1: down to a bunch of waterfalls, saw a bunch of
- 40:44Speaker 1: big elk.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Good times.
- 40:47Speaker 1: All right, it is time for a correct answer review,
- 40:50Speaker 1: I'm told, according to this script. Do I have to
- 40:53Speaker 1: read their correct answers?
- 40:54Speaker 2: Yes, please.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Are you a big listener of the program? Apparently not
- 40:59Speaker 1: enough to remember these things. Question number one, the correct
- 41:01Speaker 1: answer is calcite. Question number two, you could say grizzly bear,
- 41:05Speaker 1: polar bear, or brown bear. Three is ivory-billed woodpecker. Four,
- 41:10Speaker 1: shore lunch. Five, a cinco. Six, Texas, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin. Seven, Colorado.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Eight would have been China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, Japan, Korea.
- 41:25Speaker 3: All those countries.
- 41:26Speaker 1: So many options, Randall. And number nine, National Park. Scoreboard update, please.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Where does that put us?
- 41:33Speaker 3: Same.
- 41:34Speaker 1: There we go.
- 41:36Speaker 6: It's down to Spencer, who was in first place with seven,
- 41:39Speaker 6: and Dr. Randall, who has six.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Okay. I fumbled that one.
- 41:45Speaker 2: What if Spencer gets it really wrong? Can we give
- 41:48Speaker 2: him a negative one?
- 41:49Speaker 1: I almost wanted to take one off. He just gets
- 41:52Speaker 1: one wrong. Question number 10. The topic is hunting. In
- 42:00Speaker 1: what decade were elk first reintroduced to the state of
- 42:06Speaker 1: Kentucky after being extirpated in the 1800s? And when I
- 42:11Speaker 1: say decade, I mean like the 20s, the 30s, 40s, 2020s, whatever.
- 42:16Speaker 1: All right, what decade were elk reintroduced to the state
- 42:19Speaker 1: of Kentucky? Spencer's confident.
- 42:25Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Randall is less so.
- 42:31Speaker 3: I don't even know where to begin, so I'm just
- 42:32Speaker 3: going with my gut.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Really?
- 42:34Speaker 1: Really? I was debating whether I was almost going to
- 42:38Speaker 1: have the exact year, but then I thought that would
- 42:40Speaker 1: be too hard.
- 42:40Speaker 3: That's nuts, man.
- 42:41Speaker 1: I thought that would be too hard. But then her
- 42:44Speaker 1: judgment came through and I realized, sicko.
- 42:47Speaker 6: He only changed it about an hour ago. He sent
- 42:50Speaker 6: me an email saying, I think this is maybe too hard.
- 42:52Speaker 6: I said, yeah, I think so.
- 42:53Speaker 4: Spencer, what do you have?
- 42:55Speaker 3: We'll find out.
- 42:55Speaker 1: I just want to know if we have different answers.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Here we go. Let's just show them. Let's just see
- 42:59Speaker 1: what we got. 1990s, says Spencer. 1990s, says Randall. 90s
- 43:04Speaker 1: for Yanni. 60s, says Omar. 90s for Laura. 40s for Corey.
- 43:09Speaker 1: The correct answer is....
- 43:15Speaker 2: 90s.
- 43:16Speaker 1: 1997, to be exact. Elk were returned to Kentucky in
- 43:19Speaker 1: multiple waves from 1997 through 2002, during which time more
- 43:23Speaker 1: than 1,500 elk were released into the elk restoration zone
- 43:27Speaker 1: of eastern Kentucky. They flourished... And by 2001, the state
- 43:31Speaker 1: was able to open its first regulated hunting season in
- 43:34Speaker 1: modern history. Since then, they've reached like a stable population
- 43:37Speaker 1: of 10,000 elk, which is the largest elk population east
- 43:41Speaker 1: of the Mississippi. And I just finished reading a really
- 43:44Speaker 1: interesting book that spent about a third of its time
- 43:46Speaker 1: talking about this story in depth. And it was primarily
- 43:50Speaker 1: driven by a handful of individual people, hunters, who thought, hey,
- 43:55Speaker 1: elk used to be here. They belong here again. And
- 43:57Speaker 1: we're just going to find a way to make it happen.
- 43:59Speaker 1: So it's a pretty inspiring example of how any person
- 44:02Speaker 1: could really make a big difference. Where did they all
- 44:04Speaker 1: come from? They pulled them from, oh gosh.
- 44:07Speaker 2: The Rockies, right?
- 44:08Speaker 3: I feel like Yellowstone attributed to some of those eastern states.
- 44:12Speaker 1: I cannot remember. It was like on the tip of
- 44:13Speaker 1: my tongue, but I don't want to say the wrong thing.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Read the Beasts of the East by Andrew Moore. That's
- 44:18Speaker 1: the book. And I just had him on the Future
- 44:20Speaker 1: Wild podcast. A little plug. Very interesting episode. Exploring the
- 44:25Speaker 1: fall of... and rise of wildlife in the east. So
- 44:29Speaker 1: how much of the eastern wildlife was extirpated or brought
- 44:33Speaker 1: crashing down by how some are now recovering. Pretty cool story.
- 44:37Speaker 1: That means, though, that Spencer took the cake.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Congratulations, Spencer.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Well done.
- 44:46Speaker 3: I'm going to give to Pheasants Forever. They're the habitat organization.
- 44:49Speaker 3: I love that about them, although I don't hunt a
- 44:52Speaker 3: lot of pheasants these days. I hunt other things that
- 44:55Speaker 3: love the habitat they provide. that it's just like something
- 44:58Speaker 3: everybody benefits from, Pheasants Forever. Even if you just like
- 45:01Speaker 3: clean water, if that's important to you, Pheasants Forever helps
- 45:04Speaker 3: contribute to that.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Great selection. And I think it's particularly impressive that Spencer
- 45:09Speaker 1: won today's episode, even while getting the rock question wrong.
- 45:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Randall, isn't that impressive?
- 45:15Speaker 1: Good for me.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Wow.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Well done, everybody. And thank you, everyone, for playing. Be
- 45:21Speaker 1: sure to join us again next week for more Meat
- 45:23Speaker 1: Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation... Always wins.
- 45:28Speaker 3: All right.
- 45:28Speaker 1: And Randall sometimes.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Thanks, Mark. Thank you, Mark. Thanks, Mark.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Yeah, Spencer from South Dakota, he's the host.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays them questions down.
- 45:45Speaker 3: And he likes taking those two- and three-year-old bucks.
- 45:50Speaker 4: And he's an avid amateur rock hound.
