A new Liberty Tree has been planted in Janes Island State Park — a direct genetic descendant of Maryland’s original 1775 Liberty Tree, which stood tall at Saint John’s College in Annapolis. Over 100 feet tall and a symbol of resistance against British rule, the original tree fell in 1999’s Hurricane Floyd. Now, thanks to saved seeds, this younger tree carries the same DNA and spirit of freedom.
