Latest / The Rand Report: Sports / Walk-Off King, Blindside Blow, Arch Under the Microscope

- 0:04Football is back. And the first real test already
- 0:08separated the guys who compete from the ones
- 0:10still figuring it out. Welcome to the RAND Report.
- 0:14I'm Jim Rand. Three stories that actually matter
- 0:16right now. Not the soft narratives, not the pre
- 0:19-season height machines spinning at full speed.
- 0:22The ones with real stakes. Starting Canton. Hall
- 0:26of Fame game. Panthers vs. Cardinals. Most years
- 0:29this game is forgettable. A collection of backups
- 0:32and bubble players running vanilla schemes under
- 0:34stadium lights that feel bigger than the product.
- 0:37Not this one. Undrafted rookie Haines King takes
- 0:40over in the second quarter and ends it with a
- 0:425 yard touchdown run as time expires. 13 play
- 0:46drive, 65 yards, third and goal, he keeps it,
- 0:50dives, wins. 21 of 34, 180 yards, two touchdown
- 0:55passes, 39 rushing yards, and the walk -off.
- 0:58This is a kid who went undrafted after being
- 1:00the ACC player of the year at Georgia Tech. Most
- 1:04people wrote him off. Scouts saw the athletic
- 1:06traits, but questioned the polish. Teams decided
- 1:09someone else was safer in the draft. He just
- 1:12made every one of those decisions look slow.
- 1:15Watch the final drive closely. King doesn't panic
- 1:17when the pocket starts to collapse. He converts
- 1:20a critical third and 14 with his legs, getting
- 1:23out of bounds to stop the clock. He keeps the
- 1:25chains moving. When the final play arrives and
- 1:28the receivers are covered, he sees the middle
- 1:30of the field open and takes it himself. That
- 1:33is not luck. That is a competitor who refuses
- 1:35to let the moment get bigger than him. That is
- 1:38the kind of play that forces coaches to keep
- 1:40a player on the roster. On the other side, Carson
- 1:43Beck. Third round pick out of Miami after a strong
- 1:46final college season. Starts the game and looks
- 1:49like he belongs. 15 of 19, 188 yards. A touchdown,
- 1:54clean pocket presence. Throws with conviction,
- 1:56doesn't panic when the rush comes, shows the
- 1:59ability to climb the pocket and deliver accurately.
- 2:02Beck played into the third quarter and left the
- 2:04Cardinals with a real sample of what the future
- 2:06could look like behind Jacobi Berset. Berset
- 2:09is still the weak one guy. That is the responsible
- 2:12call for a team trying to win games right now.
- 2:15But Beck just made the conversation louder. He
- 2:18showed the kind of command and accuracy you want
- 2:20to see from a young quarterback in his first
- 2:22professional action under the lights. Preseason
- 2:25openers get overhyped every year. Talking heads
- 2:28turn one good half into a franchise altering
- 2:31performance before the film even gets reviewed.
- 2:34This one earned some attention without the exaggeration.
- 2:37King showed toughness and production when the
- 2:39lights were brightest. Beck showed polish and
- 2:42decision -making against live competition. That's
- 2:45useful information for both organizations. Everything
- 2:48else is noise until the regular season starts
- 2:50counting and the games actually matter. The real
- 2:53takeaway is simpler than the highlights. Opportunity
- 2:56still exists for players who produce when given
- 2:59the chance. Undrafted does not mean finished.
- 3:02Third round does not mean finished. The tape
- 3:05from Canton will get studied in both buildings.
- 3:08And both of these young quarterbacks just forced
- 3:10people higher up the depth chart to pay attention.
- 3:13Second story hits harder. Washington commanders,
- 3:16Saturday practice, one -on -one pass rush drills.
- 3:19Laramie Tunsel, their high -paid left tackle,
- 3:22goes down with a torn triceps. Surgery expected.
- 3:26Most of the 2026 season likely gone. This is
- 3:29the same Tunsel they traded for last year. The
- 3:32same guy they just gave a two -year extension
- 3:34that made him the first offensive lineman to
- 3:36average 30 million a year. 60 .2 million total.
- 3:41Highest paid at the position. A market -setting
- 3:43deal designed to lock down the blindside for
- 3:46Jaden Daniels and give the young quarterback
- 3:48a reliable wall to work behind. And now that
- 3:51blindside is a problem again. Daniels already
- 3:54missed 10 games last season with various injuries.
- 3:57Knee, hamstring, elbow. The whole point of bringing
- 4:00Tunsel in and paying him like that was to keep
- 4:02the young quarterback upright and available.
- 4:05That plan just took a direct hit in the middle
- 4:07of August. Andrew Wiley or Brandon Coleman will
- 4:11get the first look at left tackle. Neither is
- 4:13Tunsel. You can talk about depth charts and next
- 4:16man up culture all you want. The drop off is
- 4:19real. Tunsel has been one of the more reliable
- 4:22and highly graded left tackles in the league
- 4:24for several years. When that level of protection
- 4:27disappears overnight, the entire offense feels
- 4:30it. The quarterback feels it first. The play
- 4:32calling has to adjust. The margin for error shrinks
- 4:35on every dropback. This is the risk every team
- 4:38takes when it hands out premium money on the
- 4:41offensive line. Durability is part of the contract,
- 4:44whether it is written in the language or not.
- 4:47When it fails, the organization has to absorb
- 4:49of the consequences in real time. Commander's
- 4:52fans can spin this as temporary. They can point
- 4:55to the calendar and hope for a late season return
- 4:58if the recovery goes perfectly. Reality is simpler.
- 5:01Losing one of the best left tackles in football
- 5:04before the season starts is a major blow to any
- 5:07team with playoff hopes. Especially one that
- 5:09already saw its quarterback get banged up repeatedly
- 5:12last year. Accountability cuts both ways. The
- 5:15player has to stay healthy enough to honor the
- 5:18investment. The organization has to plan for
- 5:20the possibility he doesn't. Washington just learned
- 5:23that lesson the hard way in the middle of training
- 5:25camp. The rest of the league is watching. Big
- 5:28money does not buy certainty. It only raises
- 5:31the cost when the certainty disappears and the
- 5:33season is still weeks away from starting. Third
- 5:36story moves to Austin. Texas Fault Camp is open.
- 5:40Arch Manning is the clear starter for the second
- 5:42full season, and the microscope is already locked
- 5:45in. Sarkeesian said he had a good first day.
- 5:48That's the baseline. Manning is coming off a
- 5:51season that started rocky and finished strong.
- 5:533 ,000 plus yards, 26 touchdowns, 7 interceptions,
- 5:58better late than early. He showed growth through
- 6:00the middle of the year. He showed the ability
- 6:02to tighten decision -making after early struggles
- 6:05and finish the season with momentum. Now the
- 6:07expectations are higher. Heisman talk, playoff
- 6:10talk, SEC title talk, national championship talk
- 6:14in some corners. Every throw will be dissected
- 6:17on social media and highlight shows. Every incomplete
- 6:20will get the still not ready treatment from the
- 6:22same people who overhyped him last year and then
- 6:25pivoted when the early results were imperfect.
- 6:28This is the cycle with high profile quarterbacks
- 6:30at blue blood programs. The scrutiny never turns
- 6:34off. The name brings attention. The program brings
- 6:37pressure. The combination creates a constant
- 6:39evaluation that most players never face at this
- 6:42volume. Manning has shown he can handle it and
- 6:45still improve. That matters more than the first
- 6:47day practice reports. The question this year
- 6:50is whether the supporting cast and the scheme
- 6:52give him enough room to play free instead of
- 6:54playing tight under the weight of outside noise.
- 6:57Texas has the talent around him. They have the
- 7:00coaching. They have unfinished business from
- 7:02last season. All of that lands on the quarterback
- 7:05first when the games begin. Watch how the conversation
- 7:09unfolds over the next few weeks of camp and into
- 7:11September. If Manning starts strong, the narrative
- 7:14will shift quickly to national championship contender.
- 7:18If he has an uneven stretch, the same voices
- 7:20that demanded perfection last year will return
- 7:23with the same doubts and the same volume. The
- 7:25noise is predictable. What is not predictable
- 7:28is how a young quarterback responds to it over
- 7:30a full season when every possession is examined
- 7:33in public. Arch Manning knows the assignment.
- 7:36He knows the spotlight does not move. The rest
- 7:39of us get to watch whether the noise helps him
- 7:41play freer or forces him to play tighter. That
- 7:44is the real test in Austin right now. Not the
- 7:47first day practice reports, not the early camp
- 7:49praise, the ability to perform while everyone
- 7:52is watching and waiting for the next mistake
- 7:54or the next statement drive. Three stories, one
- 7:58clear thread. Competition reveals, contracts
- 8:01don't guarantee health, hype doesn't win games.
- 8:04Haynes King just reminded everyone that undrafted
- 8:06still means opportunity if you produce when the
- 8:09lights come on and the moment is real. Carson
- 8:12Beck showed polish under the brightest early
- 8:14lights and forced the Cardinals to keep evaluating
- 8:17what they have behind the veteran. Laramie Tunsel's
- 8:20injury shows how fast a 30 million a year plan
- 8:23can change and how expensive the consequences
- 8:25become when the protection disappears. And Arch
- 8:28Manning starts another year with the entire college
- 8:31football world watching every step, every throw,
- 8:34every decision under the same intense microscope.
- 8:37That's the real scoreboard right now not the
- 8:39soft takes not the polished narratives that protect
- 8:42the big names and the big contracts the ones
- 8:45that actually force people to compete the ones
- 8:47that show who is ready when the moment arrives
- 8:49and who is still figuring it out football is
- 8:52back the tests have already started and the truth
- 8:55is already showing up on the field and in the
- 8:57training rooms this has been the rand report
- 9:00i'm jim rand less hype more truth until next
- 9:05time keep competing.
