- 0:00Speaker 1: The In This League Podcast Network.
- 0:05Speaker 2: This is Dynasty Sports Life, a podcast about playing fantasy baseball, basketball, football,
- 0:10Speaker 2: and hockey.
- 0:12Speaker 1: 365 days a year. Here's your host, Jesse Sevier. Welcome
- 0:19Speaker 1: to the Dynasty Sports Life. Jesse Sevier here, ready to
- 0:22Speaker 1: talk to you about the wonderful world of Dynasty Fantasy Sports,
- 0:25Speaker 1: the NBA season. It's here. The day that you're listening
- 0:29Speaker 1: to this or the day that this should be dropping
- 0:33Speaker 1: should be the opening day of the NBA season starting
- 0:36Speaker 1: at weird hours of the day. And I hope everybody
- 0:39Speaker 1: is tuning in because that is going to be fun.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Starting to watch to see what happens in the post-tanking
- 0:46Speaker 1: NBA era. Quote unquote. Hockey rolling on. Football rolling on.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Baseball rolling on. my Lord, my Milwaukee Brewers are in
- 0:55Speaker 1: the World Series. I'm almost embarrassed. This is, yeah, this
- 0:59Speaker 1: is amazing. Of course, right after I move out of Wisconsin.
- 1:02Speaker 1: But I went to a game this year, which I'm
- 1:04Speaker 1: pretty sure means that if they win, I get a ring.
- 1:08Speaker 1: And also today, we're going to go back to blender country.
- 1:12Speaker 1: If you don't remember why I play a blender sound,
- 1:14Speaker 1: if you think I just hate you by playing that,
- 1:16Speaker 1: it's because When we do episodes that cross the borders
- 1:20Speaker 1: of the four sports that we cover here, we call
- 1:23Speaker 1: it a blender because we're mixing things up. We're talking
- 1:25Speaker 1: multiple sports at once. So that's the sound about to
- 1:29Speaker 1: hit your ears with my man Marcus and the blender. Marcus,
- 1:35Speaker 1: you're wearing that. You've taken off the Cowboys hat. You
- 1:38Speaker 1: have the Marlins hat. It's a rip-off Brewers hat. And
- 1:41Speaker 1: I think that's very good of you to do. We
- 1:43Speaker 1: don't know, as of this listing, whether the Brewers have
- 1:47Speaker 1: advanced to the World Series. We're recording that right now.
- 1:51Speaker 1: But it's all right. This is timeless. This is timeless content.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So we can record it. The Marlins never make the
- 1:59Speaker 1: World Series, except when they do out of nowhere, and
- 2:01Speaker 1: then they always win the whole thing.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Until COVID, every time they made the playoffs, they've won
- 2:06Speaker 2: the World Series. So pretty good percentage there.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah, well, that barely counts. You and I are, we're
- 2:14Speaker 1: brothers for life because three years ago, we went through
- 2:16Speaker 1: a formative experience of attempting to do the most massive
- 2:21Speaker 1: draft I'm sure either one of us has ever tried,
- 2:24Speaker 1: starting up this four-sport dynasty. And it was, in fact,
- 2:29Speaker 1: a 110-round, 18-team, pro draft followed by a 40 round
- 2:36Speaker 1: 18 team prospect draft. People have heard about the four
- 2:41Speaker 1: sport league before on this show. And I know some
- 2:44Speaker 1: people probably kind of want to tune it out when
- 2:46Speaker 1: we're talking about, no, nobody wants to hear about somebody
- 2:49Speaker 1: else's fantasy league. I get it, but this is the
- 2:52Speaker 1: N equals one for the real four sport dynasties that
- 2:56Speaker 1: I can talk about. And you can talk about And
- 2:58Speaker 1: one of the things when you're doing a draft in
- 3:01Speaker 1: a league like that is, or any dynasty draft, who
- 3:04Speaker 1: the heck knows how it came out. And we're kind
- 3:06Speaker 1: of going to talk from the perspective of three years later,
- 3:09Speaker 1: what we think about some of the things that happened.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And yeah, I don't know, Marcus. So this is a,
- 3:15Speaker 1: this is an exercise. I think you were interested in
- 3:17Speaker 1: putting yourself through for some reason.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah. You know what? Everyone kind of feels like they
- 3:22Speaker 2: know what is best, right? Everyone who plays fantasy and
- 3:24Speaker 2: plays it a lot as an expert, or at least
- 3:27Speaker 2: We feel like we're doing it and we're good most
- 3:29Speaker 2: of the time, right? And we don't make bad decisions.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And regardless of how many posts on Reddit about this
- 3:36Speaker 2: trade is league breaking, blah, blah, blah. Why would you
- 3:38Speaker 2: draft him? At the end of the day, we don't
- 3:41Speaker 2: really know what's going to happen, especially in Dynasty until
- 3:43Speaker 2: several years down the line. So what a treat taking
- 3:47Speaker 2: one of the most daunting things that I've ever done
- 3:49Speaker 2: fantasy-wise and being able to look back and I thought
- 3:53Speaker 2: I was successful, right? And to think I was successful
- 3:55Speaker 2: at the time. And then to look back and just
- 3:57Speaker 2: see what really happened and what it looks like today.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Yeah. Spoiler alert for me. I am
- 4:04Speaker 1: just tortured by what I'm seeing here. I feel like,
- 4:08Speaker 1: oh no. Every time I look at what I picked
- 4:10Speaker 1: in the startup draft, I have forgotten and I have
- 4:14Speaker 1: shame and I feel like what in the heck was
- 4:16Speaker 1: I doing? But yeah, we're going to talk about a
- 4:19Speaker 1: few years on some of the things that may be
- 4:22Speaker 1: we thought we knew then and we know differently now,
- 4:25Speaker 1: or just some observations that we have a few years
- 4:28Speaker 1: out about how some of these dynasty decisions have aged
- 4:32Speaker 1: and what we thought about it. I know coming in,
- 4:35Speaker 1: you had, we've famously, a team of three and you
- 4:38Speaker 1: guys came in with a strategy. So what did you
- 4:40Speaker 1: guys think when you first started this out, Marcus? Yeah.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So thankfully I have my co-GMs, Mick and Glenn. All
- 4:46Speaker 2: of us have one sport that we made sure to
- 4:49Speaker 2: dedicate like all of our research on. So that way
- 4:51Speaker 2: it didn't overburden anybody with feeling like, I don't know
- 4:55Speaker 2: what kind of psycho would want to do it all
- 4:56Speaker 2: by themselves, Jesse, but there are a few of you
- 4:58Speaker 2: out there that wanted to do it. But these are
- 5:01Speaker 2: two of my closest friends in the whole world. And
- 5:02Speaker 2: it was just a great way for us to reconnect
- 5:04Speaker 2: across the country and do something that we all do anyways, right?
- 5:07Speaker 2: And we all have fun with it. Our strategy was
- 5:10Speaker 2: two thirds, right? Two thirds of us, there's always a
- 5:12Speaker 2: majority to make the decision and how we approach the
- 5:15Speaker 2: draft was At every pick, we're going to place who
- 5:18Speaker 2: we thought were our top three best players available for
- 5:22Speaker 2: each of the sports. I did basketball. Mick did baseball.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Glenn did hockey. And then we all, everyone has a
- 5:29Speaker 2: pretty good knowledge of football for more or less. So
- 5:32Speaker 2: we all just threw whoever we wanted. We all picked
- 5:35Speaker 2: one person for football and just made our list of
- 5:37Speaker 2: 12 folks. When it came about five or so picks
- 5:40Speaker 2: before us, So that way we weren't stressed about making
- 5:43Speaker 2: some giant list or worrying about values, blah, blah, blah.
- 5:47Speaker 2: But we had a really good group of maybe five
- 5:49Speaker 2: or six guys to choose from once it got to
- 5:51Speaker 2: our spot. Once we got to our spot, we just
- 5:55Speaker 2: had an idea of, okay, what do we need? What
- 5:56Speaker 2: do we have so far? Sorry, Mick, I don't care
- 5:59Speaker 2: about baseball. So we're just going to keep pushing that
- 6:01Speaker 2: one down the end. And then Glenn was pretty confident
- 6:05Speaker 2: that he could figure it out in prospects and later
- 6:09Speaker 2: in finding value later with good contracts. So we really
- 6:12Speaker 2: prioritized football and basketball. When we approached it, I believe
- 6:17Speaker 2: we were the 15th pick or the 16th pick. And
- 6:21Speaker 2: we just made a commitment. We were going to pick
- 6:23Speaker 2: the best basketball player available at that point, the youngest,
- 6:27Speaker 2: best one that we felt. And then on the comeback,
- 6:29Speaker 2: we were going to choose between Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes,
- 6:33Speaker 2: whoever was there, because then we knew we'd be set
- 6:34Speaker 2: a quarterback for the next seven to 10 years. And
- 6:38Speaker 2: it was just something that we never had to worry about.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And after that, we were going to roll the dice
- 6:42Speaker 2: with our top, top 12 folks that every pick and
- 6:45Speaker 2: make a group decision on what we'd like to at
- 6:47Speaker 2: the moment. How about you?
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, my strategy coming in, obviously I was prioritizing youth
- 6:55Speaker 1: and salary. So I was looking across the board. I
- 6:57Speaker 1: tried to rank everybody in the same set of ranks.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I had a huge spreadsheet of where I had my
- 7:05Speaker 1: rough projections for all four sports and fairly elementary projections
- 7:10Speaker 1: back in those times. But I was thinking in terms
- 7:14Speaker 1: of cynically felt like people coming into these leagues are
- 7:19Speaker 1: generally stronger at baseball and football, and especially baseball being
- 7:24Speaker 1: really deep. And I felt like hockey and basketball were
- 7:28Speaker 1: also sports where players seemed to age better. I liked
- 7:32Speaker 1: my basketball. prospect knowledge in baseball. So I went for
- 7:37Speaker 1: hockey and basketball. That was my plan. And ultimately, I've
- 7:41Speaker 1: been successful. I've won both of them. I don't know how.
- 7:44Speaker 1: After looking at the startup draft, I won both of
- 7:46Speaker 1: them once in three years. I've won each of them once.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But yeah, I thought that good things had happened in
- 7:53Speaker 1: the startup draft. But that was my strategy coming in.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And I feel like I executed it. It's not that
- 7:59Speaker 1: I avoided it. all the other sports at the top.
- 8:02Speaker 1: We're going to talk about my first round pick, which
- 8:05Speaker 1: was baseball later, but it, it turned out to, to,
- 8:08Speaker 1: I executed according to my plan, by the way, if
- 8:11Speaker 1: you ever do a draft and you have a plan
- 8:12Speaker 1: and you come out of the, come out of the
- 8:14Speaker 1: draft and you don't feel like you have the best
- 8:17Speaker 1: team or one of the best teams, you must be
- 8:19Speaker 1: doing it wrong because you obviously are evaluating guys differently
- 8:22Speaker 1: from everybody else. So if you take the players, you
- 8:25Speaker 1: like more, you almost by definition are always going to
- 8:28Speaker 1: feel good about your draft. Otherwise you, You just can't
- 8:31Speaker 1: execute on your own thing, which is not great. Anyway, yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 1: that is how it started. And I felt pretty good
- 8:40Speaker 1: at the end of it. How did you feel at
- 8:42Speaker 1: the end of that startup draft?
- 8:44Speaker 2: We felt very confident. We felt very confident right out
- 8:47Speaker 2: the gate. Glenn is a math wizard, and he was
- 8:50Speaker 2: ready to rock and roll to the nearest dollar for hockey.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So we were really on task. We had already mapped
- 8:57Speaker 2: out the next three years of contracts for baseball. basketball.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Baseball was the last sport in the season. So we
- 9:03Speaker 2: figured we'd address it if we had to. And we
- 9:06Speaker 2: start off, we went essentially undefeated in football to start
- 9:10Speaker 2: off the league. So we knew right away that if
- 9:13Speaker 2: you're going to finish top three in football, you're already
- 9:15Speaker 2: in a really good chance to compete for the four sport.
- 9:18Speaker 2: So go for it. So it really worked out well
- 9:21Speaker 2: the first year. We tied with Kevin for the lead,
- 9:24Speaker 2: but unfortunately lost the tiebreaker. So that will always be
- 9:26Speaker 2: a little asterisks for us. But since then though, however,
- 9:31Speaker 2: not going as well, Jesse, not going as well. Great start.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. It's certainly teams have had different trajectories, which
- 9:39Speaker 1: you would expect in dynasty. So we wanted to talk
- 9:43Speaker 1: about the, we're not, we're not my Lord. I just
- 9:45Speaker 1: described to you 150 round 18 team draft. What is that? Nine,
- 9:50Speaker 1: many thousands of players anyway. So we're not that nobody,
- 9:54Speaker 1: nobody is going to try to bore you with the
- 9:56Speaker 1: whole thing, but At the time, I think most people
- 10:00Speaker 1: going into this felt like there was a decent top
- 10:03Speaker 1: five picks that we would want between the sports. And
- 10:08Speaker 1: how did you feel about it? Was that the way
- 10:10Speaker 1: you looked at it coming into this draft? And if so,
- 10:13Speaker 1: how did you feel like we came out of it?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Yeah, before we actually did the Was it the duck race? However,
- 10:19Speaker 2: we discerned all the hundred yard fight before we did
- 10:22Speaker 2: the hundred yard fight to figure out who drafted first.
- 10:25Speaker 2: We were like, man, I don't know. What do you think?
- 10:27Speaker 2: Let's put all the sports best players together. Let's do
- 10:29Speaker 2: their contracts. And we narrowed it down. Personally, we had
- 10:33Speaker 2: it to about three players on our end that we
- 10:36Speaker 2: thought were like, if we're in the top three, we
- 10:38Speaker 2: want these three and then we'll figure it out from there.
- 10:41Speaker 2: But yeah, that's, it played out exactly how we anticipated
- 10:45Speaker 2: maybe one really wasn't on our radar for the top five,
- 10:49Speaker 2: but the order wasn't the same, but I'm not going
- 10:52Speaker 2: to disagree with the order. All those players are phenomenal
- 10:55Speaker 2: players and they've been significant fantasy contributors at this point.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Yeah. The names are not unfamiliar. The top five went
- 11:05Speaker 1: Connor McDavid, Luka Doncic, Shohei Otani, Ronald Acuna Jr., Nikola
- 11:10Speaker 1: Jokic at the very top. So people were avoiding football
- 11:15Speaker 1: as one would expect in a dynasty startup where your
- 11:18Speaker 1: football players are only going to last for so long.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And we're really, yeah, there, but there's a split between
- 11:24Speaker 1: the other three sports and yeah, I don't know of
- 11:28Speaker 1: this five pack, which one do you think you guys
- 11:32Speaker 1: would have taken? You were in 16th pick, but if
- 11:34Speaker 1: you would have had the chance at any of these players,
- 11:37Speaker 1: who do you think you would have taken?
- 11:38Speaker 2: We did narrow it down to two where if we're
- 11:40Speaker 2: getting the top two, we really have to figure out
- 11:42Speaker 2: between these two players, which will have the most impact.
- 11:47Speaker 2: And ultimately we knew that there was going to be
- 11:49Speaker 2: a big contract coming for Shohei, but he, based on
- 11:53Speaker 2: the rules that we had, he was able to support
- 11:55Speaker 2: out both sides of the ball, which would have the
- 11:57Speaker 2: most significant impact for baseball. And it's shown because every
- 12:02Speaker 2: team that's had him essentially has been very successful in
- 12:06Speaker 2: baseball and, including we had a champion with Shohei as well.
- 12:09Speaker 2: And that 70 million contract didn't really matter a whole
- 12:12Speaker 2: lot in the end when you win the title. But
- 12:14Speaker 2: we had Shohei one, and then we had Nikola Jokic
- 12:16Speaker 2: two at the end of the day.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Okay. Shohei one and Nikola Jokic two. Yeah, I think
- 12:23Speaker 1: that was fair. Jokic is older than you might think,
- 12:30Speaker 1: obviously was three years younger then, and you would have
- 12:33Speaker 1: had the advantage of the baseball players that year. were
- 12:36Speaker 1: we were drafted in the middle of baseball season. So
- 12:37Speaker 1: you're going to have to wait a whole year to
- 12:39Speaker 1: get your baseball players. So there was a little more
- 12:41Speaker 1: risk to them, but yeah, I got that. I know
- 12:44Speaker 1: I was not really looking at Shohei at the beginning
- 12:47Speaker 1: because I was afraid of that contract, just the way
- 12:49Speaker 1: that was going to involve my roster construction later. Now, subsequently,
- 12:53Speaker 1: I think I've learned that baseball's economics are so incredibly
- 12:56Speaker 1: messed up, man. And you see it in the playoffs
- 13:00Speaker 1: now that three of the four teams near the end
- 13:03Speaker 1: are constructed mostly of pre-arb and arb players. And the
- 13:07Speaker 1: same thing can happen in fantasy when you're doing salaries.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I almost regret that we did salaries because I don't,
- 13:13Speaker 1: but I do because there are just so many freely
- 13:17Speaker 1: available talents who are getting playing time that are such
- 13:20Speaker 1: small cap hits relative to our cap. Anyway, that's my problem.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I do McDavid. I probably would have taken McDavid first,
- 13:28Speaker 1: given his age and how much he dominates his sport.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Luca was right there. People forget Ronald Acuna Jr. has
- 13:35Speaker 1: been probably the least successful of these guys, but Ronald
- 13:38Speaker 1: Acuna had just come off a record fantasy season, like
- 13:43Speaker 1: one of the best fantasy seasons we'd ever seen. Just
- 13:46Speaker 1: because that has not worked out over the years, that
- 13:49Speaker 1: was absolutely within the range. So, yeah, I felt like
- 13:54Speaker 1: that makes sense as the top five. Things got shaky
- 13:57Speaker 1: right after the top five, in my opinion. But yeah,
- 14:01Speaker 1: not everything even worked out in this first round. But yeah,
- 14:04Speaker 1: that's where I would have been. I would have been
- 14:06Speaker 1: terrified of the Shohei contract, even though he's a cheat code.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Luka and Connor probably would have been my guys. Yeah.
- 14:13Speaker 2: And when you said things got shaky, like when for
- 14:15Speaker 2: everyone who's not looking directly at the Excel sheet with
- 14:18Speaker 2: all the picks, a couple of them were shaky, right?
- 14:21Speaker 2: But for more or less, like for the most part,
- 14:23Speaker 2: for the first couple of rounds, these players were all
- 14:26Speaker 2: really high producing. They're still producing for the most part.
- 14:30Speaker 2: There wasn't a whole lot of risk involved in these players.
- 14:35Speaker 2: These were your sure things. And there's some stuff that
- 14:37Speaker 2: was unpredictable and then injuries and contracts became super inflated
- 14:42Speaker 2: in some sports. So three years down the line, it
- 14:45Speaker 2: looks a little more dangerous now than it did when
- 14:47Speaker 2: it was drafted. But yeah, it's hard to tell what's
- 14:50Speaker 2: going to happen at that moment. So that's why we
- 14:52Speaker 2: get to look back. But for more or less, this
- 14:54Speaker 2: group of folks did a really solid job out the gate.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Except for one.
- 15:00Speaker 1: The next few picks after that, Joel Embiid, Christian McCaffrey, honestly,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I thought neither one of them were ideal picks. Embiid,
- 15:09Speaker 1: I know, was a recent MVP at that time, but
- 15:13Speaker 1: the injuries had really started to hit. We've seen injuries
- 15:15Speaker 1: his whole career, and there was a huge contract hanging
- 15:19Speaker 1: over him that was going to be terrifying to have,
- 15:22Speaker 1: a max contract that was a couple years even from
- 15:25Speaker 1: kicking in. I wanted no part. Christian McCaffrey was a
- 15:27Speaker 1: running back on the wrong side of 25, but look
- 15:30Speaker 1: at us. It's four years later and he's still kicking butt.
- 15:33Speaker 1: So what do I know? And then the great one,
- 15:36Speaker 1: we have to talk about this. We're not going to
- 15:38Speaker 1: talk about the whole first round. We're going to make
- 15:39Speaker 1: it as far as me and my pick number eight
- 15:43Speaker 1: of Wander Franco in the first round. Like what was
- 15:47Speaker 1: this a month before it happened? And Wander Franco became
- 15:52Speaker 1: forever a pariah.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Oh, it was wonderful, Jesse. Not the fact that it happened,
- 15:57Speaker 2: that part of it, probably context matters. But yeah, you
- 16:00Speaker 2: know what? It happened. What are you going to do?
- 16:03Speaker 2: You couldn't have foreseen that. There was no cameras that
- 16:05Speaker 2: you were aware of where it was picking up this information. Unfortunately,
- 16:09Speaker 2: the governments did not include you on what was being
- 16:12Speaker 2: investigated when you were making these selections, so we'll never know.
- 16:15Speaker 2: But whenever something like that happens, there's always piranhas chomping
- 16:19Speaker 2: at the bit to get those players and take the
- 16:20Speaker 2: risk on them. So at least we didn't have to
- 16:23Speaker 2: turn them into nothing, right?
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yeah. So how did that work out for me? I
- 16:27Speaker 1: believe then I traded him for absolute scraps, by the way,
- 16:31Speaker 1: except for the fact that his contract still existed, which was,
- 16:35Speaker 1: it was, that was the other thing about Wander is
- 16:37Speaker 1: he was signed to such a reasonable contract for several
- 16:40Speaker 1: years in advance. In addition to being a first round
- 16:43Speaker 1: type talent who was peaking out at about then he
- 16:46Speaker 1: was going to be a locked in value for my
- 16:48Speaker 1: baseball team for years. But yeah, there's always somebody and like,
- 16:53Speaker 1: the Oakland Raiders of the 1970s, there's no outlaw that
- 16:56Speaker 1: Team MGM didn't want on their franchise in that startup draft.
- 17:00Speaker 1: You guys wanted every bad citizen you could find, and
- 17:03Speaker 1: you took on Wander Franco. And how did you feel
- 17:06Speaker 1: about that transaction, Marcus?
- 17:08Speaker 2: It didn't go well, unfortunately. We knew it's a risk.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Anytime that you do that, it's a risk. However, you
- 17:14Speaker 2: know what? Sometimes a calculated risk is an okay thing
- 17:16Speaker 2: to take, especially when you know it's not going to
- 17:19Speaker 2: impact you financially. So it didn't cost a whole lot.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I think the most expensive part of that trade was
- 17:24Speaker 2: an NBA second, which you know what, I'm okay with it.
- 17:29Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, unfortunately, he's still
- 17:31Speaker 2: sitting in our IR because he's on the commissioner exempt
- 17:34Speaker 2: list and we're not allowed to drop him until MLB
- 17:38Speaker 2: officially says he's no longer eligible to be returned. So
- 17:41Speaker 2: he's just going to sit there until it won't financially
- 17:43Speaker 2: hurt us, which in baseball, there's ways around that. But
- 17:47Speaker 2: not with the way that we constructed ours. Unfortunately, there's
- 17:49Speaker 2: not a way around that one. Now his contract was
- 17:52Speaker 2: getting to the more expensive parts of it and we
- 17:54Speaker 2: just don't want to take the hit. So he will
- 17:56Speaker 2: remain there until forever. Yeah.
- 17:59Speaker 1: You could always burn a buyout on him if you
- 18:01Speaker 1: had an extra one to go during a season, but
- 18:04Speaker 1: otherwise you aren't stuck. And the problem is there's a
- 18:06Speaker 1: limited number of IL slots. So it does cost you something,
- 18:09Speaker 1: but the contract doesn't cost while he's on the IL.
- 18:12Speaker 1: For a while, you just had to carry him because
- 18:14Speaker 1: until He was put on the exempt list, which he
- 18:16Speaker 1: was on admin leave for quite a while. He just
- 18:19Speaker 1: counted toward your salary. But that was the part where
- 18:22Speaker 1: you kind of knew what you were getting. Anyway, that
- 18:25Speaker 1: gutted my baseball franchise. But we wanted to then. The
- 18:30Speaker 1: thing with this draft is you hear what round guys
- 18:33Speaker 1: go in. And you almost have to divide it by four.
- 18:36Speaker 1: But you have to divide it by four for an
- 18:38Speaker 1: 18-team league. You hear a guy went in the fourth round. Really,
- 18:41Speaker 1: that's a first-round pick. Because in that person's respective sport,
- 18:45Speaker 1: that could be one of the top round guys who
- 18:48Speaker 1: went because they're all being interspersed here. In the first
- 18:51Speaker 1: three rounds, I guess we're trying to identify a couple
- 18:54Speaker 1: of guys who were like, wow, that was great value.
- 18:57Speaker 1: That was a really good move. What did you find
- 18:59Speaker 1: when you tried to look back on that?
- 19:02Speaker 2: When I was looking back on it, I saw that
- 19:03Speaker 2: every round that I went down, I made more and
- 19:05Speaker 2: more mistakes as I went through because now I look
- 19:08Speaker 2: at the names and go, wow, what was I thinking
- 19:11Speaker 2: back then? So I kind of already brought up the
- 19:13Speaker 2: whole Josh Allen versus Patrick Mahomes thing. So even when
- 19:16Speaker 2: I was looking in the second round, we had narrowed
- 19:19Speaker 2: it down. We just figured they were 1A, 1B. There
- 19:21Speaker 2: wasn't a whole lot between them. And then Mick and
- 19:23Speaker 2: I and Glenn all being from New York, we were like, man,
- 19:27Speaker 2: is the New York bias? Do we have the bias
- 19:30Speaker 2: to pick Josh Allen over Mahomes even though Mahomes has
- 19:33Speaker 2: been the guy? Allen's had a couple of years right
- 19:37Speaker 2: now in a row, but Mahomes has been the guy
- 19:39Speaker 2: for many years and he will be. So we all
- 19:42Speaker 2: were just like, all right, let's take off our New
- 19:44Speaker 2: York blinders and just go with Mahomes. And then of course,
- 19:48Speaker 2: terrible decision in New York. the end, because it would
- 19:51Speaker 2: have been way different otherwise. But I think realistically, when
- 19:55Speaker 2: we did our, when we did our blender for that
- 19:58Speaker 2: area in New York, we had Josh Allen number one.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And that's because he's been one of the best fantasy assets.
- 20:03Speaker 2: And even though we felt like You said it yourself,
- 20:06Speaker 2: the CMC one was something that you were surprised with.
- 20:09Speaker 2: We did start to see football go off the board
- 20:11Speaker 2: pretty early at the end of the first round around
- 20:13Speaker 2: the turn. But Josh Allen might be one of the
- 20:16Speaker 2: biggest steals at that point, mostly all the way through
- 20:20Speaker 2: the second round. He's put up more fantasy points than anyone.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I think like the top 10 highest scoring fantasy football
- 20:28Speaker 2: players of the last 25 years, like six or five
- 20:31Speaker 2: or six of them are Josh Allen players. It's like
- 20:34Speaker 2: you've gotten the production that you needed. And if you
- 20:36Speaker 2: were looking for that, that's the guy you want, right?
- 20:39Speaker 2: If you're looking for someone early in a draft that's
- 20:41Speaker 2: going to carry your team for years and years, that
- 20:43Speaker 2: was one of them. So that was like the big
- 20:45Speaker 2: one that stood out. Other ones that kind of stood
- 20:48Speaker 2: out to me, looking back on it now, are Kyle
- 20:50Speaker 2: Tucker at pick 39 or 49 in the third round.
- 20:55Speaker 2: That one felt really good at the time. But now
- 20:57Speaker 2: that the baseball contracts have gotten so elevated and He
- 21:01Speaker 2: wasn't picked too far after Aaron Judge. And if I wanted,
- 21:04Speaker 2: I don't think that I would put him in the
- 21:05Speaker 2: same kind of realm as Aaron Judge right now, especially
- 21:08Speaker 2: given Tucker's contract. So that was, they're not all good ones, right?
- 21:12Speaker 2: But that was one specifically that I pointed out. And
- 21:14Speaker 2: then one of the other ones that really hit me
- 21:16Speaker 2: looking back was Jalen Hurts. I don't know how often
- 21:20Speaker 2: everyone clowns on Jalen Hurts for not being able to
- 21:22Speaker 2: throw the football. He has definitely put up a lot
- 21:25Speaker 2: of rushing, which has helped, but That football team has
- 21:31Speaker 2: never been any good, unfortunately, since they were drafted. And
- 21:35Speaker 2: they're probably not going to be for a while. It
- 21:38Speaker 2: hasn't really gotten any better, even though they just changed owners.
- 21:41Speaker 2: But Jalen Hurts was a pretty big surprise to see
- 21:44Speaker 2: that early in the draft.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, that was definitely a surprise. Yeah, so two
- 21:53Speaker 1: guys I'm going to have, even at pick 20, I
- 21:56Speaker 1: think Kiel McCarr ended up being a steal. We're talking
- 21:58Speaker 1: about just the generational defenseman. He was still very young.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Now he's on an absolute max contract now. Now that
- 22:06Speaker 1: contract is going to hurt. But kudos to our man
- 22:10Speaker 1: Jesse Brankin for taking him in the beginning of the
- 22:13Speaker 1: second round. And really, he was several picks down the
- 22:17Speaker 1: board on hockey players. Kudos to him for that. All right,
- 22:21Speaker 1: I'm going to do a real jerk thing, but it's
- 22:23Speaker 1: my show. I can be a jerk. In round three,
- 22:25Speaker 1: I'm going to take my own pick, which is Kirill Kaprizov,
- 22:28Speaker 1: because I really, I still feel good about that one.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Don't worry. I'm going to insult my picks plenty during
- 22:34Speaker 1: this episode, but I am, I'm very happy. I felt
- 22:37Speaker 1: like he was a steal at pick 44. So young,
- 22:40Speaker 1: so productive. He helped me win a championship already. And
- 22:43Speaker 1: then I've traded him because of trying to keep churning
- 22:47Speaker 1: salaries and keep remaining relevant in hockey. But he is,
- 22:51Speaker 1: he's special. So I liked him. It, The thing is there,
- 22:55Speaker 1: there's plenty of good picks. They're all, they're all guys
- 22:58Speaker 1: who kind of should have been there. It's just a
- 22:59Speaker 1: matter of who you can identify. If we're looking at
- 23:01Speaker 1: the first three rounds who went below what they ultimately
- 23:05Speaker 1: were able to produce. And I don't really see a
- 23:06Speaker 1: guy who turned out to be like the number one
- 23:08Speaker 1: overall guy in his sport, maybe Aaron judge, but then
- 23:11Speaker 1: Aaron judges had injury issues too. So yeah. And I
- 23:15Speaker 1: think it's, I think it was a pretty good early
- 23:18Speaker 1: part of the draft couple stretches, but any other observations
- 23:22Speaker 1: to make about the majors draft generally that we had there? Yeah.
- 23:28Speaker 2: So when you're thinking about it, like you're going to
- 23:29Speaker 2: look back now and realize that a lot of the
- 23:31Speaker 2: younger players are going to be selected in the lower rounds,
- 23:34Speaker 2: like as you're continuing to go. So as you go,
- 23:37Speaker 2: you realize, man, I took this guy because I thought
- 23:39Speaker 2: he was going to be really good. How did I
- 23:41Speaker 2: not know this guy was going to be so much better?
- 23:44Speaker 2: Like I'm sure we've all done that when you, I
- 23:47Speaker 2: don't know how often everyone gets to go back and look,
- 23:49Speaker 2: Sometimes I do that with draft picks for like a
- 23:51Speaker 2: trade that I made in the past. Who was selected
- 23:54Speaker 2: at that one? Who could it have been versus who did,
- 23:57Speaker 2: which bum did I trade for at that moment? But
- 23:59Speaker 2: for an example, for our listeners out there in the
- 24:02Speaker 2: sixth round at pick number 93, unfortunately our team drafted
- 24:07Speaker 2: DK Metcalf, which wasn't terrible. There was a bunch of
- 24:10Speaker 2: wide receivers that went off the board. We were trying
- 24:13Speaker 2: to win in football immediately. We knew we were going
- 24:15Speaker 2: to come around and have one of the top picks
- 24:17Speaker 2: in in the prospect, and we had an idea of
- 24:19Speaker 2: who was going to fall to us. So we knew
- 24:20Speaker 2: we were going to bolster football that way. So we're
- 24:23Speaker 2: just trying to fill out the roster with talented players.
- 24:26Speaker 2: But unfortunately, right after him is Jose Ramirez, Kenneth Walker,
- 24:32Speaker 2: Franz Wagner, and the list of great players continues to
- 24:35Speaker 2: go on while DK Metcalf can hardly get a pass
- 24:39Speaker 2: thrown in his direction from the current day Aaron Rodgers.
- 24:42Speaker 2: So three years down the line, there's a bunch of
- 24:44Speaker 2: other players right below them that are just far exceeding
- 24:49Speaker 2: what we thought their expectations might be because we were
- 24:52Speaker 2: trying to get something to win now. And that's that
- 24:54Speaker 2: whole dilemma of are you drafting youth? What is the
- 24:57Speaker 2: potential versus who are those guys that have been doing
- 25:00Speaker 2: it right now and are going to be successful?
- 25:04Speaker 1: And then, Marcus, we did have some later values in
- 25:08Speaker 1: this 110% round almost 2000 player pro draft. So the
- 25:13Speaker 1: rules by the way, were that anybody who met the
- 25:17Speaker 1: rookie graduation qualification, 82 games in the NBA, a hundred
- 25:21Speaker 1: games of skater in the NHL. I think it was
- 25:24Speaker 1: like four games for the NFL and 130 played apparent
- 25:29Speaker 1: 130 at bats or 15 years pitch for baseball. Anybody
- 25:33Speaker 1: who was under those numbers or was prospect eligible could
- 25:36Speaker 1: not be picked. among these 2000 players. So just to
- 25:39Speaker 1: make it worse, we'll get to those guys later and
- 25:42Speaker 1: how they went, but still later on down toward the
- 25:45Speaker 1: bottom of that 2000 player draft, there were still valuable
- 25:50Speaker 1: players going off for dynasty. Who have you found down
- 25:53Speaker 1: there at those levels?
- 25:55Speaker 2: So there are some really notable people that we could
- 25:59Speaker 2: do in the middle, but I wanted to get the
- 26:01Speaker 2: nitty gritty, right? So I wanted to say the best
- 26:04Speaker 2: value pick, and I'll put this one on, The best
- 26:07Speaker 2: value pick happened at pick number 1,349 by the other Jesse.
- 26:14Speaker 2: And that was Kiefer Sherwood. Kiefer Sherwood. And ours, yeah,
- 26:19Speaker 2: what a pick because that guy bangs like no other.
- 26:22Speaker 2: That is the ultimate floor guy, especially since his contract
- 26:26Speaker 2: was so low until this most recent year. That was
- 26:30Speaker 2: just a solid pick that just keeps on producing year
- 26:34Speaker 2: over year. And who would have thought I had that
- 26:36Speaker 2: one starred on the whole list. When you look at
- 26:38Speaker 2: value and point production based on their draft position, that
- 26:42Speaker 2: was probably the most valuable late pick in the whole draft.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Yeah, he wasn't being paid much either. I'll say the
- 26:52Speaker 1: next guy because I suspect you're going to have him too, Marcus,
- 26:55Speaker 1: so we can both gush over this pick by the Sonics.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Pick 1426. You know which one I'm going to talk
- 27:03Speaker 1: about here? Kyron freaking Williams. When it picked 14-26, that
- 27:09Speaker 1: was the 81st round. No, 80th round of this thing.
- 27:14Speaker 1: 80th round, they take Kyron Williams, who's one of the
- 27:17Speaker 1: best couple of running backs in the NFL now. He
- 27:19Speaker 1: was already a pro. He was already on the Rams.
- 27:22Speaker 1: This was not a rookie who we didn't know was
- 27:24Speaker 1: going to break through. I don't know how that happened.
- 27:27Speaker 1: How could that even happen at that point? What is
- 27:29Speaker 1: wrong with us, Marcus?
- 27:31Speaker 2: Wasn't Cam Akers the starting running back that year?
- 27:35Speaker 1: He may have been. He may have been. I'll give
- 27:36Speaker 1: you that. Obviously, if he was thought to be the
- 27:39Speaker 1: starting running back, he wouldn't have been there. But picking
- 27:42Speaker 1: Kyron Williams turned out to be a pretty good decision.
- 27:45Speaker 2: As I overlooked these 2,700 picks that we reviewed over
- 27:48Speaker 2: the last couple days, I overlooked Kyron Williams three years ago,
- 27:53Speaker 2: and I overlooked him again when I was reviewing this list.
- 27:55Speaker 1: What?
- 27:56Speaker 2: That is... I'm going to have to take my star
- 27:58Speaker 2: off of Kiefer.
- 28:00Speaker 1: No, Kiefer is dirt cheap and he's produced like crazy.
- 28:04Speaker 1: So there's nothing wrong with that. But who else did
- 28:06Speaker 1: you find this down low?
- 28:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I got another one that's low that had a
- 28:10Speaker 2: one season that was absolutely dynamite. And that was pick
- 28:14Speaker 2: number 1,534, Cole Reagans. What a season that he had
- 28:16Speaker 2: in 2024. It looked like The sky was the limit
- 28:24Speaker 2: there for a moment. He had over 200 strikeouts, ERA,
- 28:28Speaker 2: that was just over three. And it just looked like
- 28:30Speaker 2: he was going to be the guy there. And unfortunately,
- 28:33Speaker 2: it looks like injuries have hit him. So I'm wondering
- 28:35Speaker 2: that if he'll ever be able to reclaim that status.
- 28:38Speaker 2: But he's playing again, which is a good news, right?
- 28:41Speaker 2: And he's already done it once. Maybe he can do
- 28:44Speaker 2: it again. But for at least one year, it looked
- 28:47Speaker 2: like that was going to... We tried to trade for
- 28:48Speaker 2: him immediately. And we were declining. We're like, there's no way.
- 28:51Speaker 2: There's no way. So what a snipe by Foggy that
- 28:54Speaker 2: late in the draft.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Foggy is no fool. By the way, I heard from
- 28:58Speaker 1: Foggy this week. You may remember that we talked about
- 29:01Speaker 1: Foggy last week and the dilemma that he had. And
- 29:04Speaker 1: I questioned whether he even realized where he was at.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Foggy said he knew two weeks in advance and he
- 29:11Speaker 1: obsessed about it every single day. And he still doesn't
- 29:15Speaker 1: know if he regrets that decision or not. I respond
- 29:18Speaker 1: to him with one word, capital I, Integrity. but I'm
- 29:22Speaker 1: not sure that I cheered Foggy up with that. Anyway,
- 29:25Speaker 1: what other guys did you see really late in this
- 29:27Speaker 1: draft that caught you? I guess it's my turn. I'll
- 29:29Speaker 1: give you one more. This is probably my last one,
- 29:32Speaker 1: but you could go on. But Morgan Geeky at 1152
- 29:35Speaker 1: to the Cox squad was excellent. It took a couple
- 29:38Speaker 1: of years for that one to pay off. And I
- 29:40Speaker 1: totally did not think that was going to be a thing.
- 29:42Speaker 1: But boy, Morgan Geeky just broke out last year to
- 29:46Speaker 1: an unbelievable degree. Kudos to the Cox boys for taking him.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Absolutely. I got one more late. And then I had
- 29:53Speaker 2: a couple of honorable mentions right there in the middle.
- 29:56Speaker 2: The late one, I'm going to go with Matthias Samuelsson.
- 29:59Speaker 2: a little late bloomer but he was picked number 1593
- 30:01Speaker 2: that'll do yeah if you want a player who averages
- 30:07Speaker 2: just over three points per three points per game and
- 30:11Speaker 2: even at a high of over four last season that's
- 30:14Speaker 2: a guy that i want right he was cheap you
- 30:16Speaker 2: got him super late there's basically no attachment based on
- 30:21Speaker 2: what you paid for him he was dropped actually kevin
- 30:24Speaker 2: drafted him what a great pick kevin And then he
- 30:26Speaker 2: dropped him almost immediately where Foggy picked him up for $ 1.
- 30:29Speaker 2: And what a treat he was on Foggy's team. So
- 30:33Speaker 2: that was my last late one.
- 30:35Speaker 1: To give you a sense here, because you're likely as yourself, Blair,
- 30:37Speaker 1: he was taken between Matt Collins, Atlanta wide receiver, and
- 30:40Speaker 1: Connor Joe, first baseman for the Pirates. We were in
- 30:44Speaker 1: that territory, but those seemed like very reasonable picks. Heck,
- 30:47Speaker 1: Matt Collins was my pick. All right, let's take a break.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Come back with some more guys. There is a feature
- 31:09Speaker 1: in fan tracks. We don't sell fan tracks on the show,
- 31:12Speaker 1: but one thing when I'm in the matchup tool there,
- 31:16Speaker 1: it hides the bench and you can push the button
- 31:18Speaker 1: to show your bench. And I call that the hate
- 31:21Speaker 1: yourself button, because all you're going to see is the
- 31:23Speaker 1: things that you could have done to be better in
- 31:26Speaker 1: this matchup. This whole exercise is like a hate yourself
- 31:30Speaker 1: button that you can see the guys you could have
- 31:32Speaker 1: taken and did not. Now the rookie draft was a
- 31:36Speaker 1: fascinating thing. type of exercise as well. It wasn't nearly
- 31:41Speaker 1: as long. It was 720 picks, 40 rounds. And there
- 31:45Speaker 1: was a requirement in this that you take a certain
- 31:48Speaker 1: number of prospects from each sport. I wanted to do that.
- 31:53Speaker 1: And I wanted to do that with the pros because
- 31:55Speaker 1: I did not want somebody just absolutely laying out, ignoring
- 32:00Speaker 1: a sport, completely tanking it and Also, the reason we
- 32:04Speaker 1: did a separate prospect draft is I didn't want anybody,
- 32:06Speaker 1: like we were saying last week, to draft just the
- 32:08Speaker 1: quote win now team or just the, you know, for
- 32:11Speaker 1: 10 years from now team. We all had to have
- 32:14Speaker 1: a little bit of both. You could trade it, but
- 32:16Speaker 1: you had to start with some kind of a mix.
- 32:19Speaker 1: And so what did you think of that rookie draft?
- 32:22Speaker 1: How did your boys over there at the MGM approach it?
- 32:26Speaker 2: Yeah, so we approached it with the same thing that
- 32:29Speaker 2: we did for the pro draft. However, we started the
- 32:32Speaker 2: rookie draft, what was it, a couple of weeks after
- 32:35Speaker 2: we started the pro draft. So we had already had
- 32:38Speaker 2: a really good idea. We probably had 10 to 15
- 32:40Speaker 2: picks done, probably more than that actually, 30 picks done
- 32:43Speaker 2: in the pro draft. So we had an idea of
- 32:44Speaker 2: where our teams were building out. So we had an
- 32:46Speaker 2: idea of where we wanted to go to. We were
- 32:48Speaker 2: going to focus heavy in the pros on basketball to
- 32:50Speaker 2: make sure that we had a good enough team to
- 32:53Speaker 2: compete right away. Basketball was probably the sport that collectively
- 32:57Speaker 2: we knew the least about. So we thought we could
- 33:00Speaker 2: combat that by spending the highest capital in that sport
- 33:04Speaker 2: and we could figure out the rest, which is an
- 33:06Speaker 2: idea that I've heard many others had as well in
- 33:08Speaker 2: this league. Yeah, so we did that with basketball. And
- 33:10Speaker 2: then we had an idea that within the top, we
- 33:13Speaker 2: had the third pick in the prospect that we were
- 33:15Speaker 2: going to get one of four people. The four top
- 33:18Speaker 2: prospects at that time across all the sports seemed pretty chalk.
- 33:22Speaker 2: We knew we would get one of them. We just
- 33:24Speaker 2: weren't sure which one. And then we were going to
- 33:26Speaker 2: dedicate the next couple of picks to bolstering hockey. After that,
- 33:30Speaker 2: we did the same thing. We just lined up the
- 33:32Speaker 2: players and then we gave Mick free range for baseball.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So whenever he saw a baseball guy that he liked
- 33:38Speaker 2: in that moment, he had the trump card since we
- 33:41Speaker 2: told him he couldn't draft any baseball until we drafted
- 33:43Speaker 2: Mike Trout in round 100 that we would figure out
- 33:46Speaker 2: baseball later. So actually looking back on it, which I
- 33:49Speaker 2: know I'm kind of already going into that way, but
- 33:52Speaker 2: I actually shot Mick a message in our thread and
- 33:54Speaker 2: was just like, man, look at your draft because Glenn
- 33:56Speaker 2: and I were absolutely terrible. But if you look at
- 33:59Speaker 2: this baseball team, like you put together, we have almost
- 34:01Speaker 2: all those same players that he drafted. They're all producing
- 34:06Speaker 2: for the most part, or we traded them for much
- 34:09Speaker 2: better players once their value started going up. So we
- 34:13Speaker 2: just had to give him a shout out because I
- 34:15Speaker 2: didn't even know he really knew that much about baseball
- 34:17Speaker 2: at the time. The prospect part of it, it's something
- 34:19Speaker 2: that I learned I needed to learn more about compared
- 34:22Speaker 2: to our peers. But it didn't go great for me,
- 34:24Speaker 2: that's for sure.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you mentioned basketball. So a structural thing about basketball
- 34:30Speaker 1: in this four-sport league that I think everybody, several teams
- 34:34Speaker 1: picked up on this, is that we allow baseball picks
- 34:39Speaker 1: of anybody who's in a minor league system. And so
- 34:42Speaker 1: there's a big pool of baseball guys, and a lot
- 34:44Speaker 1: of guys are going to come up. And frankly, a
- 34:47Speaker 1: lot of positions in the pro league that are going
- 34:51Speaker 1: to be filled. In hockey, it's similar. People get drafted.
- 34:55Speaker 1: They spend several years in the minors. They spend several
- 34:58Speaker 1: years as a prospect in our system. And that kind
- 35:01Speaker 1: of leaves football and basketball as the sports where the
- 35:05Speaker 1: prospect player pool is pretty light, actually, because we only
- 35:09Speaker 1: allow guys who would be allowed to be drafted by
- 35:13Speaker 1: the professional sport. to be prospects. Basically, that means that
- 35:17Speaker 1: in basketball, you just have that year's draft or a
- 35:20Speaker 1: couple of guys who maybe were rookies last year and
- 35:23Speaker 1: played short of 82 games, but it made basketball especially
- 35:27Speaker 1: very shallow. And I think everybody came in with the
- 35:31Speaker 1: idea of, I got to get one of these best
- 35:33Speaker 1: basketball players at the beginning. Eight of the 12 teams
- 35:36Speaker 1: in this first round took basketball because I think that
- 35:39Speaker 1: was just structurally obvious to everybody who looked at it.
- 35:42Speaker 1: I would say you'd mentioned there's kind of a top
- 35:45Speaker 1: five here or top four here. I would even take
- 35:48Speaker 1: that out to five. I think the guys who went
- 35:50Speaker 1: at the top belonged at the top. At that time,
- 35:54Speaker 1: it was Conor Bedard, Victor Wimbanyama, Bijan Robinson, Ellie De
- 35:59Speaker 1: La Cruz, Cade Cunningham were all right there at the top. Boy,
- 36:03Speaker 1: did I think that at pick 11, I was going
- 36:06Speaker 1: to get a Cade Cunningham type or something. Oh no,
- 36:10Speaker 1: nothing close to that. I ended up with Scoot freaking
- 36:12Speaker 1: Henderson at pick 11. It was like that. So it was,
- 36:17Speaker 1: it was a rough time there, but is that, you
- 36:20Speaker 1: said you were going for, you were going, you were
- 36:23Speaker 1: going for football here to try to boost it up.
- 36:26Speaker 1: And you actually were the first team to take a
- 36:28Speaker 1: football player in this round.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Back then we had the assumption that no matter
- 36:33Speaker 2: what happened, it would be unlikely that Victor Ueminyama or
- 36:36Speaker 2: Conor Bedard would be the third pick. Yeah, Elidio Cruz
- 36:41Speaker 2: was the top prospect coming out at the time, but
- 36:44Speaker 2: we just, baseball is baseball, right? So you never quite
- 36:47Speaker 2: know what's going to happen there. And with football, Bijan
- 36:50Speaker 2: had everything that you'd love to see. He was the
- 36:52Speaker 2: number one asset. He was already climbing in the top
- 36:55Speaker 2: 10 boards of all the football players before he even
- 36:58Speaker 2: put on pads. It just felt like from a value
- 37:00Speaker 2: standpoint and how we started building the team in our
- 37:03Speaker 2: pro draft, that Bijan was going to work for us
- 37:05Speaker 2: once the other two were done. However, we would have
- 37:08Speaker 2: absolutely taken one of the other two above him. So
- 37:12Speaker 2: when Tony drafted Conor Bedard, I was immediately messaging the
- 37:17Speaker 2: other Jesse, telling him how awesome Eli De La Cruz
- 37:19Speaker 2: was and that he would be a great addition to
- 37:21Speaker 2: his team. So that way we could have Victor drop
- 37:24Speaker 2: to us. Unfortunately, I didn't know Jesse was also a
- 37:26Speaker 2: Spurs fan, so there was literally 0% chance of that happening.
- 37:30Speaker 2: But yeah, Bijan really did help bolster it, and he
- 37:32Speaker 2: was a big reason why we were so successful. I
- 37:35Speaker 2: wish we never traded him, unfortunately.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. It was a very uneven draft because I
- 37:44Speaker 1: think my overall take from this prospect draft is, good Lord,
- 37:47Speaker 1: does nobody know anything? I look at this and I'm like, yeah,
- 37:51Speaker 1: all of these seem to make sense at the time.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Rarely did I see somebody get taken and I was like, ah,
- 37:56Speaker 1: that's crazy. That guy is never going to amount to anything.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Because the truth is prospects will break your heart to
- 38:04Speaker 1: quote the old Jason Park phrase. And most prospects either
- 38:09Speaker 1: fail or they turn into the boring players in the
- 38:12Speaker 1: league that you don't want anyway. So it's very rare
- 38:15Speaker 1: that any of these guys turn out to be a
- 38:17Speaker 1: whole lot. And boy, there's a lot of just heartbreaking
- 38:22Speaker 1: selections that happened here. But the other thing is the
- 38:26Speaker 1: other thing it lends itself to is if you think that,
- 38:29Speaker 1: if you think that some of those late pro picks
- 38:32Speaker 1: were surprises, good heavens, are there some later surprises in
- 38:37Speaker 1: this draft that really pop for people? So I don't know. What,
- 38:41Speaker 1: what do you think of this? What do you think
- 38:43Speaker 1: of just this prospect draft and how, when, but when
- 38:47Speaker 1: maybe identify some, some late round values, if you'd like
- 38:50Speaker 1: to as well.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so I think when we went back and looked
- 38:53Speaker 2: at this, like you said before, everyone always feels like, man,
- 38:56Speaker 2: I drafted well, right? That was a good draft. I
- 38:57Speaker 2: got a lot of the players I wanted to. You're
- 38:59Speaker 2: never going to get everyone you want to. It just
- 39:00Speaker 2: doesn't work that way. But I felt really good about
- 39:04Speaker 2: our prospect system until none of them were any good, right?
- 39:08Speaker 2: And then we learned that, except for our baseball prospects
- 39:10Speaker 2: ended up being pretty good. But when you look back
- 39:13Speaker 2: upon this, you really get to see where you identify
- 39:15Speaker 2: that some managers know their stuff. Some of them are
- 39:19Speaker 2: really knowledgeable players. To the best that you can be, right?
- 39:22Speaker 2: You're taking educated guesses, applying what you think can be
- 39:26Speaker 2: true based on what you've seen or what you've heard
- 39:28Speaker 2: from other professionals, right? But some of these folks have
- 39:32Speaker 2: a lot of hits on here and I don't really
- 39:33Speaker 2: want to say nice things about Kevin, unfortunately, but Kevin
- 39:37Speaker 2: showed in the prospect pool that he made a lot
- 39:40Speaker 2: of really good decisions and making one or two, like, yeah,
- 39:44Speaker 2: everybody makes one or two, but he consistently made a
- 39:47Speaker 2: lot of them. There was several good selections and Even
- 39:50Speaker 2: to point out some other managers, like Grant is no
- 39:52Speaker 2: longer with us in the league. He's probably still driving
- 39:55Speaker 2: out there somewhere. But he had a lot of great selections,
- 39:58Speaker 2: especially in the beginning into the middle. And then Fighting Figs,
- 40:03Speaker 2: they had a really strong prospect draft as well. And
- 40:05Speaker 2: they continue to grab some strong prospects throughout their every
- 40:09Speaker 2: year draft processes. But you can see the separation. And
- 40:13Speaker 2: that's what we talked about the lasting power is I
- 40:15Speaker 2: felt like our pro draft was really good. But since then,
- 40:18Speaker 2: we started to get a little bit worse drafts. year
- 40:21Speaker 2: over year or up and down, those that can be
- 40:24Speaker 2: good at identifying successful prospects will have much more longevity
- 40:28Speaker 2: for greater sustained periods of time. So that's starting to
- 40:32Speaker 2: show after these years.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Yeah. It's funny that several of the best picks that
- 40:38Speaker 1: I've identified are from managers who weren't in the league anymore.
- 40:41Speaker 1: I think we're still like, I don't know, we're still
- 40:44Speaker 1: like 75% the original managers. There's at least one team
- 40:48Speaker 1: that's turned over a couple of times, but some of
- 40:51Speaker 1: the guys who left actually did some amazing drafting. It
- 40:56Speaker 1: was just, I think one of the things that we've
- 40:58Speaker 1: learned from this is the difference between doing an above
- 41:03Speaker 1: average job drafting and an above average job managing once
- 41:07Speaker 1: your draft is done. Because there were teams who, when
- 41:11Speaker 1: I look at their draft, modestly, my own team, not
- 41:15Speaker 1: great looking back at who I drafted, but I'll talk
- 41:18Speaker 1: about why I've been able to survive despite that in
- 41:22Speaker 1: a little while. But, but yeah, Kevin, that's the thing
- 41:25Speaker 1: with Kevin. Kevin does both. Well, he drafts and he
- 41:28Speaker 1: manages well, and he trades well, and he's pretty much
- 41:32Speaker 1: got this almanac from back to the future. So I
- 41:36Speaker 1: don't know how he does that, but it makes it easy. Kevin,
- 41:40Speaker 1: we're just jealous. I've said it before. He's the best.
- 41:42Speaker 1: He's the best dynasty player I've ever played against. And
- 41:45Speaker 1: he probably winces when I say that, because then people
- 41:47Speaker 1: don't want to trade with him.
- 41:48Speaker 2: But, Say it again. Say it again.
- 41:53Speaker 1: He catches so much abuse. All right. And I never
- 41:56Speaker 1: did make that theme song for this. Yeah. Maybe go
- 41:58Speaker 1: on and give some observations on some individuals or other
- 42:01Speaker 1: things you wanted to note here.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yeah. So I thought that you, one thing that you
- 42:06Speaker 2: said is that there is going to be an excess
- 42:08Speaker 2: of baseball and hockey. And specifically one thing that I
- 42:11Speaker 2: noticed was hockey goalies based on the format that we
- 42:14Speaker 2: have in the diesel is you can basically sit players
- 42:16Speaker 2: in the minor squad for several years and And it's
- 42:19Speaker 2: unlikely that even goalies with their requirements to become pros
- 42:23Speaker 2: will become pros in their first season and sometimes maybe
- 42:26Speaker 2: not even in their second season. So when I was
- 42:29Speaker 2: going through this, I noticed how many prospect goalies were
- 42:31Speaker 2: picked and how many were starting to get picked late
- 42:34Speaker 2: and just how they're just starting to blossom now and
- 42:37Speaker 2: they're good now. They're getting to be very good. So
- 42:41Speaker 2: those picks were super valuable. The one that I wanted
- 42:44Speaker 2: to point out specifically, which might be one of the
- 42:46Speaker 2: more valuable picks in this draft, solely because of where
- 42:49Speaker 2: he was picked, was at pick number 716. Victor selected,
- 42:55Speaker 2: is it Jacob Dobesh from Montreal?
- 42:59Speaker 1: Jacob Dobesh. Jacob Dobesh, I think is how they normally
- 43:03Speaker 1: say it.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Jacob Dobesh. He is blossoming into quite the fine goalie currently.
- 43:09Speaker 2: I know he has some Jacob Fowler coming up behind him,
- 43:12Speaker 2: who's also an excellent goalie who was drafted moderately in
- 43:16Speaker 2: the middle of the prospect pool as well. But what
- 43:19Speaker 2: a pick. What a pick that late in the draft.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Almost Mr. Irrelevant.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Victor's no fool. And I think what he, in
- 43:28Speaker 1: this draft also, because he felt very strongly about his
- 43:33Speaker 1: hockey drafting skills, I think he and his partner Dolan,
- 43:38Speaker 1: I think probably allowed hockey to slip a little bit
- 43:41Speaker 1: down the board on the pro draft. And then he
- 43:44Speaker 1: got every other pick for a while in the hockey draft.
- 43:47Speaker 1: I found myself in this hockey draft, just feeling like
- 43:50Speaker 1: the hockey guys were values. A lot of those hockey
- 43:53Speaker 1: prospects just kept slipping. I really wanted to get top
- 43:55Speaker 1: football or basketball players, but every round I got to,
- 43:58Speaker 1: I was like, how can I pass on this hockey
- 44:01Speaker 1: player that I feel has such a higher ceiling than
- 44:04Speaker 1: the players I'm looking at in other sports? I just
- 44:06Speaker 1: need to take the talent and figure things out later. But,
- 44:09Speaker 1: and some of them worked out, some of them didn't,
- 44:11Speaker 1: but I probably had more luck in all near the
- 44:14Speaker 1: top of the draft with my hockey players, frankly, than
- 44:17Speaker 1: some of the other guys. But yeah, so yeah, I
- 44:20Speaker 1: think that is an absolute home run. Jakob Dobish there
- 44:25Speaker 1: in the last round. My number one, and I don't
- 44:29Speaker 1: think this is one that you'd put on your list.
- 44:32Speaker 1: In the 35th round, we haven't said his name yet
- 44:35Speaker 1: on this episode. Our man Mummert, Dan Mummert, in the
- 44:38Speaker 1: 35th round took Sal Stewart, who is a freaking monster
- 44:44Speaker 1: in MLB now. I took Cam Collier in round three
- 44:48Speaker 1: and I used to confuse those two guys. Nobody confuses
- 44:51Speaker 1: them anymore because Sal Stewart is an absolute hero and
- 44:56Speaker 1: Cam Collier is maybe not going to make it out
- 44:59Speaker 1: of the minors. We don't know. But Sal Stewart in
- 45:01Speaker 1: the 35th round is insane.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that 35th round actually might just have an asterisk
- 45:07Speaker 2: on it because there's quite a few names. If you
- 45:09Speaker 2: look at the 35th round randomly, Daniil Boot, Logan Malieu
- 45:14Speaker 2: might come up. He's been up, but been out. But
- 45:16Speaker 2: Brandon Boosie just had a great year, capped it off
- 45:19Speaker 2: with a Stanley Cup. Sal Stewart, Portillo is a prospect
- 45:24Speaker 2: that's coming up there for goalies. Like the 35th round
- 45:26Speaker 2: actually looking nice right there. What an oddity right in
- 45:30Speaker 2: the middle of that draft.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Eduardo Quintero was in that round as well. He's turned
- 45:34Speaker 1: out to be something else.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Yeah, this round, put an asterisk on 35. If we
- 45:39Speaker 2: ever do this again, we'll have to look at it again.
- 45:42Speaker 2: This one, when you look at the pros, at least
- 45:45Speaker 2: you remember the names when you were like, I'm going
- 45:47Speaker 2: to pick this person. I can't believe these two people
- 45:50Speaker 2: were on the other sides of them. When you look
- 45:51Speaker 2: at the prospect round, there's a lot of people that
- 45:54Speaker 2: I've never heard of before, and I'm sure that goes
- 45:57Speaker 2: for everyone. But there were several really good prospect picks
- 46:00Speaker 2: that were late. When you described how prospects work, you
- 46:03Speaker 2: did mention that For football, they just have to be
- 46:05Speaker 2: draft eligible. So there was a few draft eligible guys
- 46:08Speaker 2: that weren't actually in the NFL or didn't get drafted
- 46:11Speaker 2: at that time that now they look good. So for James,
- 46:15Speaker 2: another poor one out manager for us, I picked 597
- 46:19Speaker 2: in round 34, got Ladd McConkie. That was another good one.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Yeah. That is quite the pick. At 330 and 332,
- 46:30Speaker 2: we had Dylan Holloway and Brock Faber, two good. fantastic
- 46:35Speaker 2: young they're still very young players now but that doesn't
- 46:38Speaker 2: happen those are teenagers back then and now they're just
- 46:41Speaker 2: entering the early 20s mid-20s and then like I hate
- 46:46Speaker 2: to say it again but I felt like the best
- 46:48Speaker 2: combo pick back to back given value Kevin really I
- 46:52Speaker 2: know he said it was lucky he said it multiple
- 46:54Speaker 2: times but drafting Rishi Rice and then Puka Nakua back
- 46:57Speaker 2: to back at picks 118 and 135 those just they're
- 47:01Speaker 2: staples of his team and he He was able to
- 47:03Speaker 2: get Josh Allen and Amon Ra. That core group of
- 47:07Speaker 2: wide receivers, they were all in their 20s. They're going
- 47:09Speaker 2: to be there for a long time. He still has
- 47:11Speaker 2: more years with them. There's some solid picks all around.
- 47:17Speaker 2: There's a handful of them that just go round by round.
- 47:20Speaker 2: There's just one person that sticks out. It's just like, wow,
- 47:22Speaker 2: how did we miss that one? How did we not
- 47:24Speaker 2: pick that guy earlier?
- 47:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like the story of Puka Nakua in
- 47:29Speaker 1: Dynasty Leagues really was like, when were you drafting? Because
- 47:35Speaker 1: I felt like Puka Nakua, he was a guy who
- 47:37Speaker 1: did not have a prospect pedigree coming out of the draft.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I did not see him in a lot of big
- 47:43Speaker 1: time draft coverage. And then in training camp, he popped.
- 47:49Speaker 1: And it was one of those deals that was almost
- 47:52Speaker 1: unfair if you were drafting during training camp, because one
- 47:56Speaker 1: day Puka Nakua was not a thing. And the next
- 47:58Speaker 1: day he was a thing. And if you happen to
- 48:00Speaker 1: be on the clock, when that happened, This happened in
- 48:03Speaker 1: multiple leagues where I felt like people took him then
- 48:05Speaker 1: and ended up looking like geniuses. I don't know if
- 48:08Speaker 1: that's what happened with Kevin, but it was right in
- 48:10Speaker 1: that time period where a month later, he would have
- 48:14Speaker 1: probably been a second round pick. But a month earlier,
- 48:17Speaker 1: he might have gone undrafted. It was right in there.
- 48:19Speaker 1: But still, the outcome was genius. A couple of other
- 48:25Speaker 1: guys who I would point out in the 32nd round
- 48:28Speaker 1: of this, the departed TC took Pavel Dorofeev. who now
- 48:33Speaker 1: was being highly paid by the New York Rangers, but
- 48:35Speaker 1: that was a pretty amazing pick. And in the 26th round,
- 48:40Speaker 1: Thomas took Bo Nix. You got to love being able
- 48:43Speaker 1: to take a starting quarterback, even a Broncos starting quarterback.
- 48:47Speaker 1: I don't know, Marcus, should we hype up Broncos? You'd
- 48:50Speaker 1: like to go to those Broncos games, right?
- 48:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I love going to those games. I'll be going
- 48:54Speaker 2: to the game where they play. They host the Chiefs
- 48:57Speaker 2: this year, so I'll finally get to see the Broncos.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Very excited.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Wow. That's pretty cool. That is really cool. But yeah,
- 49:03Speaker 1: Bo Nix from the 26th round of prospect draft. And
- 49:06Speaker 1: this is when he was an outcast in the college ranks.
- 49:09Speaker 1: I think it was between his Auburn and his Oregon season.
- 49:11Speaker 1: And that's when he was worth nil in in dynasty. Yeah.
- 49:17Speaker 1: So there were some pretty amazing picks. Any others that
- 49:20Speaker 1: you want to mention here late in the game?
- 49:22Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. So let's go, we'll go one more here.
- 49:25Speaker 2: We'll pull it out for James again, but Tucker craft
- 49:28Speaker 2: in the 40th and final round. I picked seven Oh
- 49:32Speaker 2: five Tucker craft back then was just an oversight on nobody.
- 49:36Speaker 2: He had a Musgrove who started over him for a year.
- 49:40Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden Tucker crafts, like one
- 49:42Speaker 2: of the top five tight ends in the league right now.
- 49:44Speaker 2: So what a steal there, James, good pick, man. If
- 49:47Speaker 2: you're out there listening. Yeah.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Yeah. No, I, and I'm still in a league with James.
- 49:52Speaker 1: It's possible. Although I think James is getting real busy
- 49:55Speaker 1: these days. He had to drop out of the four sport,
- 49:58Speaker 1: but yeah, no, these, there were amazing values in this
- 50:02Speaker 1: thing late, but mostly you look at it and it's
- 50:05Speaker 1: an Island of broken dreams. And as I look at it,
- 50:08Speaker 1: I'm like the, the, After I look at my draft,
- 50:10Speaker 1: I'm like, how am I decent? I have a chance.
- 50:14Speaker 1: I've been mid to slightly above the middle in the
- 50:17Speaker 1: four sport ranks, pretty much in the league. Good in
- 50:22Speaker 1: hockey and basketball, poor in baseball and football. But my
- 50:26Speaker 1: football team this year is, I don't know, I'm like
- 50:29Speaker 1: in second place right now, which is going to cause
- 50:32Speaker 1: me to irrationally buy, I think, and do stupid things
- 50:35Speaker 1: to try to succeed. My baseball team is a little
- 50:38Speaker 1: on the rise. We've talked before about I'm just stockpiling
- 50:40Speaker 1: prospects and hoping for the best. But I figured out
- 50:44Speaker 1: why I've been okay. And that is that I have
- 50:47Speaker 1: turned over everything. 16 of my top 20 pro picks
- 50:52Speaker 1: in this draft are no longer on my team. A
- 50:55Speaker 1: couple of them drops mostly trades and a lot more helpful.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Like a lot of the best players on my teams
- 51:03Speaker 1: are guys that I ended up trading for. I don't know.
- 51:06Speaker 1: I don't feel like I ripped people off, but I
- 51:09Speaker 1: gradually climbed through a series of trades, and I kept
- 51:14Speaker 1: myself out of cap trouble that some other teams I
- 51:16Speaker 1: feel like got themselves into with some picks and have
- 51:20Speaker 1: been able to recover from this initial situation. How are
- 51:27Speaker 1: you feeling about your draft now, looking back on it
- 51:32Speaker 1: and where you're at?
- 51:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I think looking back on it now, like we
- 51:36Speaker 2: were pleased, right? As a group, we've had a lot
- 51:37Speaker 2: of success. We've still had lots of success, even though
- 51:40Speaker 2: we haven't been able to achieve what everyone's final goal is,
- 51:44Speaker 2: which is just finish number one. We haven't won a sport,
- 51:47Speaker 2: came close a couple of times, took second in basketball once.
- 51:51Speaker 2: So we've had a lot of success. We're right there
- 51:53Speaker 2: at the top of the middle for almost every sport
- 51:55Speaker 2: most years. Having a little down part now, I think
- 51:58Speaker 2: that's like our down part now, I think is a
- 52:01Speaker 2: kudos and shout out to the rest of the league
- 52:03Speaker 2: that now that we're entering our fourth season, everyone that's
- 52:06Speaker 2: still here or that's joined, they have a much better
- 52:09Speaker 2: understanding of how it all works. One of the primary
- 52:13Speaker 2: examples of that is like football defense. I felt like
- 52:16Speaker 2: a lot of it was just no one really cared
- 52:18Speaker 2: about the defense, but now the league as a whole
- 52:21Speaker 2: has really started to adjust. Now defense is much harder
- 52:24Speaker 2: to acquire than it was for the first couple of seasons.
- 52:26Speaker 2: It's much more expensive and they get drafted much higher
- 52:29Speaker 2: than they were previously. So you just have to adapt
- 52:32Speaker 2: with now everyone's general and better understanding or how they're
- 52:36Speaker 2: going to change the same thing happened in baseball like
- 52:38Speaker 2: you said the top three teams are all using guys
- 52:42Speaker 2: that are on pre-arb deals or arbitration deals right so
- 52:46Speaker 2: it's adapting and everyone's getting a lot better and everyone's
- 52:48Speaker 2: starting to understand other people's tendencies and relationships have been
- 52:51Speaker 2: built relationships have been burned maybe not too many but
- 52:56Speaker 2: we felt fine i have a question for you who
- 52:58Speaker 2: is the one guy when you did all this whether
- 53:01Speaker 2: it's pros or prospects and you were like this is
- 53:03Speaker 2: the guy I'm 100% certain that he's going to be amazing.
- 53:07Speaker 2: And looking back on it three years ago, you were
- 53:09Speaker 2: either right or you were wrong. And you were just like,
- 53:12Speaker 2: this is the one I'm going to get no matter what.
- 53:16Speaker 1: I don't know if I was that excited about anybody
- 53:20Speaker 1: necessarily that I thought. Obviously, every time I picked one
- 53:24Speaker 1: of these guys, I felt like I was above the consensus.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I suppose the one guy who I'm just known to
- 53:31Speaker 1: be irrationally good optimistic about has always been sal freelike
- 53:35Speaker 1: and i took him in the eighth round pick 134
- 53:38Speaker 1: in the minors and of course sal is just partly
- 53:41Speaker 1: he's not been healthy a whole lot of the time
- 53:45Speaker 1: but he's not turned out to do the things that
- 53:47Speaker 1: i was hoping that sal would do so far in
- 53:50Speaker 1: his career there's plenty to go and he's still a
- 53:53Speaker 1: starting member of a very good brewer's team but maybe
- 53:56Speaker 1: i would pick him I did get some good guys
- 53:58Speaker 1: later on. This team was not bereft of talent by
- 54:02Speaker 1: any means. I got Tariq Scooble in the 36th round
- 54:05Speaker 1: of the pro draft. There were good things, but nonetheless, yeah,
- 54:09Speaker 1: I don't know. Who was your guy that you thought
- 54:11Speaker 1: was going to blow?
- 54:13Speaker 2: How long did Scooble stay on your team before he left?
- 54:17Speaker 1: Did I trade him to you?
- 54:18Speaker 2: No, we thought about it. We thought about it, but
- 54:21Speaker 2: it was too expensive at the time for our blood.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Now he's way more expensive, unfortunately.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Yeah. I held him to pretty high value. I traded
- 54:28Speaker 1: him for pretty significant. And that's the thing is I said,
- 54:30Speaker 1: these guys aren't on my team. That's because I traded
- 54:33Speaker 1: them and they were still quite valuable, but I also
- 54:35Speaker 1: traded them for other players who were valuable. So yeah,
- 54:37Speaker 1: it's not that these were all busts, but yeah, Tariq Scooble,
- 54:41Speaker 1: I turned a 36 round pick into, I forget, but
- 54:44Speaker 1: it was a lot of nice things.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Yeah. We had two specifically. We, when I say we,
- 54:49Speaker 2: I say I did where I was absolutely stubborn and
- 54:53Speaker 2: The first one was Jesper Wahlstedt. I was absolutely convinced
- 54:57Speaker 2: that he was going to be the best goalie in
- 54:59Speaker 2: hockey for zero reason. I had never seen him play.
- 55:02Speaker 2: It was only based on what I heard and what
- 55:04Speaker 2: I read. And I went, we're getting him to my,
- 55:07Speaker 2: I traded for him at all of my hockey leagues.
- 55:09Speaker 2: I have them everywhere that I can get him. And
- 55:12Speaker 2: now he is one of the best goalies in hockey.
- 55:14Speaker 2: So that one worked out. The one that didn't was
- 55:16Speaker 2: John Meche. I was convinced he was going to be
- 55:19Speaker 2: the next great wide receiver and the I remember Mummert
- 55:23Speaker 2: specifically asked me, like we were working on a trade
- 55:25Speaker 2: and I was like, no, you got to give way
- 55:26Speaker 2: more for him. And he's like, no, I don't think
- 55:28Speaker 2: I will. I don't think I will. And he didn't.
- 55:31Speaker 2: And yeah, it was a giant. Now I see like
- 55:33Speaker 2: that was a terrible trade conversation. But my value was
- 55:37Speaker 2: way higher than what anyone else probably on the planet
- 55:40Speaker 2: thought he was going to be. So you can be
- 55:43Speaker 2: right and you can be wrong and you can be
- 55:45Speaker 2: very wrong. And John Meche was a very wrong.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Oh, we all have those. We all have those, but yeah, no,
- 55:52Speaker 1: I think this has been a good tour. Any last
- 55:54Speaker 1: thoughts on this startup draft and looking back at a
- 55:58Speaker 1: dynasty draft three years later?
- 56:00Speaker 2: Yeah, this was really fun to go back and review
- 56:04Speaker 2: because I remember walking out of my office at work
- 56:06Speaker 2: to go draft at that time. I had just gotten
- 56:09Speaker 2: back from parental leave. So I was right back into
- 56:12Speaker 2: work when we started doing this thing and I was like,
- 56:14Speaker 2: dang it, I can't just be at home. But it's
- 56:17Speaker 2: just a good lesson to remember. Don't overreact in the moment,
- 56:20Speaker 2: especially when it comes to trades or what happens or
- 56:22Speaker 2: someone didn't follow you. And while I go through this,
- 56:25Speaker 2: I remember all the trades, not all, but a lot
- 56:27Speaker 2: of the trades that happened, a lot of the conversations
- 56:29Speaker 2: that we had with our peers, those that are still
- 56:31Speaker 2: with us and those that aren't with us anymore. And
- 56:33Speaker 2: it's just been such a fun experience. And I can't
- 56:38Speaker 2: tell you how much I've learned from every sport just
- 56:41Speaker 2: by having the conversation with a lot of these folks
- 56:43Speaker 2: in this league. So It's something that I always say
- 56:46Speaker 2: is just embrace your league, embrace your teams, embrace your coach,
- 56:50Speaker 2: like just embrace your, embrace all the managers. Like it's
- 56:54Speaker 2: really great to build this community. And I've had nothing
- 56:57Speaker 2: but an amazing time with everyone who's been involved with it.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Yeah, man, it is. It is a whole lot of fun.
- 57:03Speaker 1: And I don't know how much people enjoyed hearing the
- 57:06Speaker 1: blow by blow of a league that wasn't theirs. If
- 57:09Speaker 1: you get nothing else, know that it's a lot of fun.
- 57:12Speaker 1: And especially if you have the right group of people
- 57:14Speaker 1: to play with. And I feel like we do. But Marcus,
- 57:18Speaker 1: any last words that you want to give to the
- 57:19Speaker 1: people before we get out of here?
- 57:21Speaker 2: Just enjoy the seasons, folks. Have fun. Continue building those bonds.
- 57:25Speaker 2: And you remember, fantasy is all about having fun. So
- 57:28Speaker 2: enjoy it.
- 57:29Speaker 1: Absolutely. Thank you, Marcus, for coming on. And we'll be
- 57:33Speaker 1: right back to close out the show. Off once again
- 57:44Speaker 1: to drop this show and remember, thank the boys that
- 57:48Speaker 1: in this league for hosting and posting, listen to, or,
- 57:52Speaker 1: you know, subscribe, rate and review on Apple pods, Spotify,
- 57:55Speaker 1: wherever else you get podcasts. And also you can leave a,
- 58:00Speaker 1: you know, kind review. You can follow on X and,
- 58:03Speaker 1: At DYN Sports Life, you can follow on Blue Sky,
- 58:05Speaker 1: Jesse Sevier. And until next time, the most important thing
- 58:09Speaker 1: is to have good luck in all your Dynasty Fantasy Leagues.
