Latest / Mini Scroll / LET THE GIRLS GAME: Is AI The Answer to Gender-Based Harassment Online?
Transcript
- 0:00Last week I spoke to game studies academics Dr. Melianne
- 0:04Butt and Doctor Lucy Sparrow about the harassment that women,
- 0:08girls, and gender diverse people face online.
- 0:11We specifically explored why video games as a medium became
- 0:14gendered, primarily seen as a male dominated activity, and how
- 0:19this gendering of the medium helped craft the concept of the
- 0:22gamer identity to be the hyper masculine white sis het man.
- 0:27Through this, Doctor Melianne explained how this narrow label
- 0:30of a gamer has led to a culture of gender based harassment in
- 0:34the space, with Gamergate as an extreme example of this.
- 0:38In this week's episode, we analyze the ways in which this
- 0:42harassment manifests for women and gender diverse people online
- 0:46and what Doctor Melianne and Dr. Lucy see as the path forward for
- 0:51combating this culture from Centennial World.
- 0:54Welcome to Let the Girls Game, a podcast miniseries where we
- 0:59explore the history and stories of women in gaming powered by
- 1:02Let's Sing. I'm your host Lauren Meisner,
- 1:06and today is Part 2 of the exploration into the harassment
- 1:10that women, girls and gender diverse people face in the
- 1:13gaming space. For anyone who didn't catch part
- 1:16one of this discussion, go back and listen before you tune in
- 1:19here. It gives a lot of necessary
- 1:22context for our conversation today and for a refresher on my
- 1:25guests. Dr. Melian Butt is a lecturer in
- 1:28Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne.
- 1:31She is an ethnographer of digital cultures, researching
- 1:34questions of diversity in the cultures and industries of video
- 1:37games and Doctor. Lucy Sparrow is an associate
- 1:40lecturer in the School of Computing and Information
- 1:43Systems at the University of Melbourne.
- 1:45Her research is primarily interdisciplinary, lying at the
- 1:48intersection of human computer interaction, game studies,
- 1:51social sciences and philosophy. Without further ado, here is
- 1:56Part 2. In terms of the harassment that
- 2:06women and girls experience online, do you think that
- 2:11especially in the gaming space, what is the role of labels in
- 2:15that? And can you speak to some of the
- 2:18more, I guess, modern examples of the ways that women and girls
- 2:23are harassed online? I think I'd probably Speaking of
- 2:28vignettes or little stories that we share.
- 2:30I, I often think of how when I was a kid, I would be playing a
- 2:35lot of online games and it was really common in those days to
- 2:38be like, what's your age, sex and location, right?
- 2:41People would just ask that of strangers And I'd always be
- 2:45like, oh, I'm eleven and I'm female, right?
- 2:48And no one would believe me like not at all because they just
- 2:52simply didn't believe that an 11 year old girl would be playing a
- 2:55game with them because they're they're, they're made invisible,
- 2:59right? So like tied into what Molly Ann
- 3:02was saying before, there's this sense that the less that we
- 3:05adopt certain mainstream labels and also the more that we hide
- 3:10who we are online, the less visible that we actually are in
- 3:13these gaming spaces as well. Despite the fact that actually a
- 3:17lot of women and a lot of girls and a lot of gender diverse
- 3:19individuals are very, very present in gaming.
- 3:22What that means is that whenever people do actually reveal their
- 3:26gender in any way, that they can end up facing a lot of online
- 3:30harassment. And we know that that particular
- 3:33cohort actually do face the highest rates of online abuse.
- 3:37And in Australia, those rates are actually higher than the
- 3:39global average as well. And E safety has shown as well
- 3:42that of those who do experience online harassment, like one in
- 3:46four of them are actually going to be fearing for their safety
- 3:49as well. So it's like a really, really
- 3:50serious problem, right? The thing is, a lot of us are
- 3:54really familiar with these online kind of tools, right,
- 3:57where we can block people, we can report people, we can mute
- 4:01people who are harassing us. But actually, while these tools
- 4:05actually do form a really, really important function, they
- 4:09don't always work. For instance, when online
- 4:12harassment is sustained, people will find ways around them and
- 4:14they they create a new account, for instance, right?
- 4:17It's, it's a fairly straightforward thing to do, but
- 4:20online harassment, particularly gender based harassment, can be
- 4:23quite sustained. Furthermore, a lot of these
- 4:25interventions are focusing on punishing or removing people who
- 4:28have done these things and less on actually supporting those
- 4:32people who actually are experiencing this abuse.
- 4:35And that's one of the things that we want to do with AI Ally
- 4:38is shift that focus a little bit and focus on supporting the
- 4:42people who are targets of harassment and empower them in
- 4:46in more ways. So when it comes to AI tech, I
- 4:49mean, there's so much conversation always about how
- 4:51it's going to like take our jobs and it, you know, there's
- 4:54obviously a lot of issues around AI for sure.
- 4:58I manage a team of all Gen. Z women and, you know, they're
- 5:01covering it for a media corporation, you know, covering
- 5:04different topics that might be controversial.
- 5:06And I'm always cognizant of the fact that they don't want to
- 5:09have their byline on an article where they feel, you know,
- 5:12worried about their safety or something like that.
- 5:14I want to make sure that they feel like safe saying that to
- 5:17me, protected by that because you know, with deep fakes and
- 5:20all of that, you never know. So if that being said, how do
- 5:24you, in your research, both of you find that AI might have a
- 5:28positive impact on women in gaming and harassment for women
- 5:32online? Is there?
- 5:33Is there a flip side? Yes.
- 5:36So there, there are definitely a lot of issues around AI and
- 5:39it's, it's, it's one of those technologies that are developing
- 5:42so incredibly rapidly and becoming mainstream in such a
- 5:46rapid way as well that rightfully a lot of people are,
- 5:50you know, worried about its impact and the way it can be
- 5:53used and so on. And these are all things that we
- 5:55do need to be really mindful of. At the same time, AI has a lot
- 5:59of really positive potential in the moderation space with
- 6:04ethical oversight, obviously. So one of the things that it's
- 6:07often quoted as being particularly good for is so when
- 6:11we're talking about harassment online, it can be so sustained
- 6:14and in such at such a high volume that honestly, like there
- 6:18aren't enough people in the world to do that job of
- 6:21moderation. And you need some kind of
- 6:23automation in order to take care of it.
- 6:25Not to mention the fact that it's incredibly, it can be an
- 6:28incredibly emotionally taxing and harmful job in itself to
- 6:32review and moderate toxic and and harmful online content.
- 6:37So having AI there is potentially a really positive
- 6:42thing in that regard. What we're really concerned
- 6:45with, I think with AI Ally is that we're not just creating a
- 6:48tool that will just detect online harm and then punish
- 6:52people or remove people, right? Like that kind of thing is
- 6:54already being developed. There's good reason to develop
- 6:57that kind of technology as well, but we're really kind of trying
- 7:01to shift the focus and make it a bit more empowering.
- 7:03So it's not about taking away people's freedoms or anything
- 7:06like that. Rather it's about supporting and
- 7:09helping people. And that's one of the reasons
- 7:11that throughout our entire process of developing AI Ally,
- 7:15it is about very much about our participants.
- 7:18So we are recruiting right now. We're recruiting girls, young
- 7:21women and gender diverse individuals age 14 to 25 to
- 7:26participate in our survey and to participate in workshops and in
- 7:30user studies, basically throughout the entire life cycle
- 7:34of the development of AI Ally to help inform what it will
- 7:37actually do. So that in the end it's, you
- 7:40know, it's not just us making decisions of what people need.
- 7:43We're actually being informed by what's going on.
- 7:46And I think in that way, you know, we can have a lot better
- 7:50ethical oversight over what's going on and make sure that it's
- 7:52actually good for people. I guess I would just love to
- 7:55hear your perspectives on how would you recommend that women
- 8:00or girls find safe spaces in the gaming industry or just online
- 8:04communities in general, and what do you think these safe spaces
- 8:07look like? Well, currently, as Amanda
- 8:10Curtis, research shows, a lot of women and gender minorities end
- 8:14up having to develop intricate coping strategies.
- 8:19And as Lucy mentioned earlier, a lot of these coping strategies
- 8:24end up hiding women's contributions to gaming, such
- 8:28as, you know, never using headsets, always muting your
- 8:31microphone, maybe using a gender neutral or more masculine avatar
- 8:35and name when you're playing games.
- 8:38And so these unfortunately hide our contributions.
- 8:42Sometimes they also backfire. But also having to develop these
- 8:46intricate coping strategies just to kind of carefully curate and
- 8:50maintain your online environment is exhausting and an unfair
- 8:55burden. So I think there, there is
- 8:58momentum here. And definitely we know how bad
- 9:02it is, right? We, we know that there is an
- 9:04issue and there's more funding, more initiatives, more community
- 9:09groups of support that are coming together now, including
- 9:12research across the government, across the industry, where if
- 9:16we're going to go back to Sweet Baby Inc controversies that I
- 9:20mentioned earlier with the Gamergate 2 point O what
- 9:22happened was that the independent contractor to do
- 9:26kind of script editing the script doctors so they they
- 9:30didn't lose their relationships or contracts with the companies
- 9:34that they were working with. Instead, the companies came to
- 9:37them and offered some advice, right?
- 9:39I feel like, you know, this has happened to us too.
- 9:42We're here for you and kind of actually sharing that.
- 9:45So it's nice to see that there is some shifts and changes and I
- 9:48think AI Ally is a good example of something that we can do
- 9:52about this. So even if the tendency has been
- 9:57to cope individually or find kind of your people or whisper
- 10:02networks, I think it's really common to just play with your
- 10:04friends. We are hoping Aili can make it
- 10:07safer and kind of make it easier for us to just be online, yeah.
- 10:14And on that point as well, if you are 14 to 25, if any
- 10:18listener is 14 to 25 and is a girl, woman or gender diverse
- 10:21individual, please do check out our website, whichisai-ally.org
- 10:26where you can sign up for our survey and potentially
- 10:29participate in a workshop or user studies.
- 10:33You get $100 E gift card if you participate in a workshop at 30,
- 10:37if you participate in a user study.
- 10:39But, you know, importantly, we just really, really want to hear
- 10:42your experiences and, and make sure that your voices are
- 10:45actually heard and, and can inform the development of AI
- 10:48Ally so we can make more of these kinds of safe spaces and
- 10:52make the online world just more of a safe space in itself for
- 10:56for people like us. Yeah.
- 10:57Amazing. Thank.
- 10:58You both so much for joining me. You're just wealths.
- 11:01Of knowledge. In this space and it was so
- 11:04great to hear about the project that you guys are working on.
- 11:06And I will absolutely put a link to AI Ally down below for any
- 11:11listeners that want to participate.
- 11:13Thank you so much to Doctor Melianne and Dr. Lucy for
- 11:16joining me. Thank you to Let's Sing for
- 11:19powering this mini series, and thank you to you for listening
- 11:22to Let the Girls Game TuneIn next week, where I speak with
- 11:25Twitch streamer Foss on the hypersexualization of women in
- 11:30gaming and streaming.
