- Glenn Ordway: So when anybody ever asked me, who's the craziest, zany, most bizarre individual you ever worked with? I don't take a second to answer. It's Mikey Adams. It's out of his mind. And he joins us right now on the podcast. It's great to see you, Mikey. Mike Adams: You too, big ol. I gotta tell you that the Boston radio market misses you badly. It's like losing a front tooth. when you when you were on a i everybody notices and everybody it's a different world now, man. Radio, you and Glenn Ordway: It is different. Mike Adams: the funny thing is, I listened to your show every single day, even though I worked there and knew all the guys, because it was great. Cause it was Glenn Ordway: Thank you. Mike Adams: funny every day, it was topical every day, and and I I didn't miss it for the for the world. And That tells you a little bit. And that's why it was a great thrill for me to be on the show with you because I've been in ra radio now fifty well, broadcasting fifty something years. Worked with a Glenn Ordway: Unbelievable. Mike Adams: whole bunch of really good people. But that show was the most fun, no matter what I did in in the world of broadcasting, on a regular basis. That was always fun. Glenn Ordway: Well, I appreciate that. And we had fun when you were in the studio because we never knew what Mikey Adams was going to do next. And that I think is what made you unique. And some of the stuff was holy shit, did he just do what I thought he just did? So we had a blast with you, and you're obviously missed as well. So why don't you let people know that haven't heard you in a while? You do a podcast. You can get the Mikey Adams podcast. You can get it on YouTube, Spotify, all the different places you there you go. Mike Adams: Yep. The Planet Planet Mikey podcast on on Spotify and Apple Podcast. I know. And people see they listen Glenn Ordway: So what else Mike Adams: to it and they Where where do I get that podcast from? Glenn Ordway: So what else y you up to these days? Mike Adams: Well, I you know, I've been living a reclusive life with my two sons. They're once Will's sixteen and Andy's twenty now. You you remember when they were born, yeah, they're almost born of the air. By the way, how's Mia? Glenn Ordway: Wow. Wow. I remember them when they were born. Yeah. Mia is great. She's a freshman at the University of Arizona and she is doing just great. She's awesome. Yep. Yep. Mike Adams: That blessed child all that stuff you went through, God lover. yeah, I have the two boys and I'm trying to feed them. It's difficult. I don't have an E B T card. You know, and they eat. All they do is like Glenn Ordway: You haven't been able to figure out how to get a hold of one of them? I figured you would be, figure it out. Mike Adams: No, I even I even took Spanish lessons for a while to see if that would help. I the thing is that they the the refrigerator door opening and shutting, ever since COVID, it's like it wakes me up and they're all they do is eat these two guys. But I you know, making ends meet is not a real big problem for me, you know, because I'm an independently wealthy Glenn Ordway: You are now. I didn't know that. Did you win the lottery? Did I miss something? Mike Adams: no, I'm lying. I'm lying about that. But the great thing was too we did have a lot of fun on that show and all those farts were fake. Those were fake farts. Yeah. Y you Glenn Ordway: No they weren't. I I can tell you they weren't. No. Mike Adams: ever watch what's his name? Leslie Nielsen with his fart machine? He's on both you know, and and Glenn Ordway: Yes, I have. Yeah. Mike Adams: one thing is for sure, farts always get a laugh, no matter where they happen, especially in church. Glenn Ordway: They do. It's the joke that that has survived, probably centuries now. Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: seventeen hundreds they were probably throwing fart jokes out there. No w they were working. Mike Adams: Well yeah, and and when I was bored my mother had make made me made me go to church. I'd make sure that I saved a few farts for the church to get everybody laughing around us and so I could sit in my own pew. Glenn Ordway: I will get to some of the greatest farters of the old big show coming up later on. It's Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: one it's point number seven I have on my list here. But I know you but I know you've been driving Uber, and I've Mike Adams: D Aussie. Yep. Glenn Ordway: got a couple other friends that that do that as well. Are you the type of person that if I get in the car, you're gonna put on a show. You're gonna go nonstop. If I've got a 15 minute trip, it's gonna be 12 minutes of nonstop entertainment. You have lights on in in the car. So that they can flash on you as you do in your act, no? Mike Adams: Right. Well, you can tell the people that are amenable to that kind of conversation. Some people aren't, some people are just stupid and nasty and mean. I I I don't do it for the money really. I do it because I didn't want to be bored. I was sitting at home, with the remote going, Judge Judy, I saw this one already. come on. So I I did it to get out of the house. You know, my wife works, my kids are in school. I'm sitting at home doing nothing. And God knows I'm not gonna listen to the radio. But I I start doing it. And it's fun. It it can be fun. And I don't do it endlessly. I only to pick my spots. The one good thing about Uber is you make your own schedule. So I can say, I'm gonna drive today and got nothing to do, or I'm not gonna do anything today, and it's all up to you. So it's it's fun and you meet a lot of interesting people. My Spanish has gotten much better. Glenn Ordway: Really? Mike Adams: These people can't believe it. They get in the car and they're speaking Spanish on the phone and they don't know that I understand Spanish because I'm Irish and English, And I then so then they they they get out of the car and I go, Tango buen día. Hasta la vista, baby. And they they all this gringo's been what's he doing speaking Spanish, But I I have fun doing it. Glenn Ordway: Did you ever think of putting cameras in the car as Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: you're driving along and then get the consumer, the person that you're driving, to sign a waiver, give them a few bucks or give them a free ride or whatever and say, Can I use this? I think it'd be a great podcast. Yeah, that was awesome. Mike Adams: that taxi cab show where the people in the backseat. Yeah, that would be good. I I would want like to do that. the problem is I'm I would be the one who would get in trouble with the the once they're rolling Glenn Ordway: Probably. Mike Adams: the cameras. Especially when I go to Framingham and pick up all those hot Brazilian chicks. They're unbelievable. Have you ever noticed that? Wha why is every Glenn Ordway: I haven't, no. Mike Adams: Brazilian girl hot and the rest of the world is a lot of fatties and stuff. I don't understand it. Glenn Ordway: Well, it's it's how God made the world, and still trying to figure it out. I haven't figured it out yet. Seventy five years. Mike Adams: What what do they do in Brazil that's special? Is it the water down? But but it's true. If and if they pick up if I pick up a girl in Framingham and she's says she's Brazilian and she's not hot, I say, You lying. You're not from Brazil. Glenn Ordway: The one incident that I think everybody remembers, and I still have people coming up to me and and saying it, is when you were trying to get a job at EEI, right? Ted Cerantis, I think, had just left, right? Is that what happened? Yeah. Mike Adams: Yes. Yep. Glenn Ordway: He had just left. You were trying to get a job at EEI. You had already had, you know, Sports World and you had done some other stuff. We'll get into some of that stuff as well. But you're looking for a job. There's an opening, and you want this job in the worst way. Knights at EEI, which by the way, you did for I think eleven years or something like that. Did Mike Adams: Yep, that's exactly right. Glenn Ordway: it for a long period of time. So you and I connived together to Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: come up with this whole idea to try to get you a little bit more attention. And that was that you were going to come in and do the crossover, and then you were going to take over the studio, and Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: you were going to lock yourself in the studio. Now, Mike Adams: And wait for the SWAT team. Glenn Ordway: And wait for the strong team to show up. So here's the things that I knew at the time. And there are things that I did not know at the time that I just recently learned about that night. First of all, yes, it was all fake. Okay. It was all Mike Adams: Gimmick. Glenn Ordway: made up. Mikey and I worked together to figure it out. We worked with the producers. We had the whole thing figured out. First of all, I don't even think there was a lock in the studio. He had to put chairs or something like that up against the right bookcase. Mike Adams: No. The bookcase. We I moved the bookcase in front of the door to make it look like a legit sh Glenn Ordway: Right. Right. So anyway, we're g you know, conniving the whole day, figuring the whole thing out. What I didn't realize is we never told the program director Jason Wolf we were gonna pull this off. And so now it happens live on the air, and the news outlets, the TV stations in town hear Mikey Adams on the microphone. Telling everybody I've taken over the studio, I'm Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: taking it hostage, and I won't leave until they give me the job. Right? And right. And Mike Adams: God damn it. Glenn Ordway: so they believed it. Now, I don't know how many of the listeners believed it, because this is Mikey Adams. This is the crazy guy who's constantly coming up with, you know, stupid, bizarre shit. But the TV stations believed it. And the next Mike Adams: They did. Glenn Ordway: thing you know, if you remember Mikey. Channel twenty-five had one of those big TV vans Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: with the the satellite dish on the top of it. They're coming they're coming in with cameras. Mike Adams: Right. Parked out front coming in with cameras and what's a and you know, it's th that was ridiculous, of course, you know, because there would have been a police squad there if the you know, if someone had Glenn Ordway: Exactly. Mike Adams: but instead it became a news story. And you know, I think that they the idea was to try to not, you know, just give me the job and announce it and it's in the paper. god. No, let's make a big stink out of this. And it was funny, it got a lot of attention and you know, we did well in that time slot, despite the fact that we were on AM big up. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, don't don't get me going about that. I've already I've already spouted that out a few times now and I piss people off when I do it. Yeah. Mike Adams: Well I know. And you were so I was behind you. I was sitting right behind you at that meeting across at GBH when when the the president or the CEO Glenn Ordway: CEO Mike Adams: and and you you ballsy big old stands, Well what about this? And and you challenged him on it and Yep. Glenn Ordway: I had all my facts, Mikey, and he didn't. And he basically lied to the staff and it pissed me off. And it probably Mike Adams: He screwed the Glenn Ordway: was the beginning of the end for me. Really. Yeah. Mike Adams: And and it was the beginning of the end for the radio station when because he he screwed the legacy by making that one stupid move. There were other stupid moves thereafter. it's like it's like, how do you how do you make a good move out of getting rid of Big O on the legendary afternoon guy? by the way, you and I have that in common. We both were let go at WE. But you had this, yeah, Glenn Ordway: Yes, we do. It's a badge of honor. Mike Adams: you had this unbelievable. track record and somebody came in and I I won't name any names 'cause you've already named them all, pe making these stupid ass decisions. It's like don't they know a fucking thing about radio, these people? Glenn Ordway: Yeah, it was all corporate and they brought this stooge in Jeff Brown. I'll name him because I thought he was a a total fool. he had no idea what he was doing. And he obviously made a bunch of those changes in there. But so be it. I think in the end, we saw the results of it and they made a lot of mistakes. Mike Adams: Absolutely. Glenn Ordway: They got a ro a lot of people that never should have been let go. And again they paid the price. Mike Adams: But millions and millions of dollars worth millions of dollars worth of damage too to that to that company, that brand. Glenn Ordway: Yes. Mike Adams: And you know, on his last day, Jeff Brown, he was walking out of the building. I knew he was done. Someone had called me. he's all Jeff Brown's all done. So I'm walking into EEI on Guest Street, and he's walking into the lobby and he comes up to me, he goes, All right, he puts his hand out, I shake his hand, he goes, Always be yourself. I said, You too, at any cost. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Mike Adams: I didn't I had no respect for him and no one did. The toilet thing, so was Glenn Ordway: Nobody did. Nobody did. Mike Adams: it who put the thing in the toilet in the urinal with the j the they took that was right. Put it put it in the urinal right over. Glenn Ordway: That was that was John Dennis who did that. He took the nameplate off of his off his door. He pried it off with like a screwdriver. I was I was already gone by then. So obviously, because Jeff Brown was the one that fired me. So Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: I'm getting phone calls. I'm somewhere on vacation or whatever. I'm getting phone calls. You would not believe what's going on at the station. Jeff Brown got fired. And Dino sends me this picture, and the picture Mike Adams: Of the urinal. Glenn Ordway: has his nameplate off the door. In the toilet and they're all lined up to piss on the nameplate on the in the urinal. No, none, none taken, none taken. So I want Mike Adams: Right, right. But no disrespect or anything, you know. No. Glenn Ordway: to get back to the that night. You you locked yourself in because you did it for hours on end. It wasn't like a half-hour gag. So the longer Mike Adams: Right. The whole show. Glenn Ordway: it went on, the TV stations started showing up. The you know, reporters started showing up at the radio station, and of course at night. there's a as skeleton staff, so you don't have security or anything else. And next Mike Adams: Nothing. Glenn Ordway: thing it's Bidlum because they want to get into the studio, they wanted to get in the cameras, because they actually thought there Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: was this crazy man who had just gone totally off the deep end and was trying to take over the radio station. And the next thing I'm watching it and they're reporting on it on TV, on the TV news. And I I had gone home, Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: I had stopped listening by that time, Mikey. And then I get a call, somebody says, turn on the TV news. I said, Why? Mikey Adams is taking over the radio. I said, Yeah, I know it's a gag. We did but Mikey and I, you know, we we figured it out today and and came up with this idea to do it. No, no. Mikey has lost his mind according to TV. Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: He's taken over the the radio station. It was it in the end, when we look back at it, it was brilliant. But when you and I conspired to do it. We didn't think it was gonna be Mike Adams: No. Glenn Ordway: a big deal. Matter of fact, we thought most of your audience would have figured it out and said, this is Mikey just bullshitting us once again. Right. Mike Adams: Yeah, this is bullshit. But no, it it did it did work out to be a a big splash for I mean it's a nighttime slot. Now, you know, Ted Ted was kinda like, you know, all facts and Y Yes. Glenn Ordway: Ted was different than he was different than you. He was straight sports and had all the newspapers lined up with his research on the table and yeah. Mike Adams: Sure. As as a matter of fact, those those newspapers, this is a weird little I was a guest on his show. When I was doing the TV thing, he'd sometimes bring me in for whatever to talk on his show. So I'm sitting there in the studio and he's talking and he's doing but this and that in the basketball domed stadiums or whatever he's talking about. And he's he's got his thumb and he's picking his nose. And then he would as we're talking, he'd roll up the boogers. honest to God, he's rolling them up and he'd put them he had a newspaper out in front of him, he'd put Put the booger on the newspaper. So I did a whole segment with him, 20 minutes. There must have been four or five boogers on that newspaper. And I'm I watched him going, what's with this guy in the boogers? it's Ted, of course. He gets up with the newspaper during the break and he goes over to the to trash can and he goes and taps some taps the boogers into the garbage and brings the newspaper back to sit down. I'm thinking he needs that for the next segment. It was booger mania. But Ted Ted was interesting because he was a really different kind of guy. Glenn Ordway: he's very different. And yet I I did listen to his show because he would come up with some stuff. But you're right. I remember, he'd have me in every once in a while because there was something going on that maybe you were talking about Reggie Lewis or something, his death or and he'd have me in there and you go in there with Ted and you'd sit down across the table with him. And he would in those days there were newspapers. Nowadays nobody reads newspapers. They go right to the internet. But he had the newspapers and so he's got the microphone in front of him. He's got the newspapers up like that as he's reading, as he's interviewing me, and he's not looking at me. There's Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: no eye contact. He's got the newspaper up there. but he was an interesting guy. And you know what? We he did not like the fact that we developed Ted Nation. He was against the whole branding of Ted Nation. I thought, Mike Adams: That was beautiful. Glenn Ordway: I thought it was great. That whole Ted Nation thing was great. He was bigger than life, and we were trying to make him into a character. Not To put him down, but to but to put him up, to lift him up. And we were because we knew he knew sports inside and out. Nobody knew Mike Adams: He did. Glenn Ordway: more sports. And Teddy knew college sports inside and out. Nobody knew it. Unfortunately, in Boston, as not a lot of people are into college sports. I was confessing to Pete this last week. I'm into it now because I no longer live in the Boston area and it's big elsewhere in the country. But Teddy hated the bits that we used to do with him, which were basically. To make Ted into a character. So Ted, you go do your straight sports, you do the way you wanna do it. And we're gonna build a character around you through all of these bits that we do. Yeah. Yeah. Mike Adams: He he needed that. He needed that bad because he was so serious, a very, very knowledgeable and pr and professional in his presentation of it. But that that can borderline Glenn Ordway: Amazing how knowledgeable he was. He knew everything. Mike Adams: on board boring if you don't have any Glenn Ordway: Correct. Mike Adams: you know, and and you got it to the point where the the even the jingle, you know, it's a Ted Nation, it was it was great because it gave him at least a modicum of personality over and above his knowledge knowledgeability. Glenn Ordway: Well, he was doing a Saturday show with Fred Smarles and we had Ted and Fred. Ted and Fred. We Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: and he hated it. He hated all he just wanted to do straight sports. You open up the program, Ted says, Mike Adams: Yep. Serious guy. Glenn Ordway: good evening, and then we're gonna do straight sports. And he could do that because he was so good at it that we wanted him to continue to do it, but let us build the branding around you. Let's build this character around you. But I want to get back to the Locking in the studio because I had a recent conversation with Jason Wolf, because my remembrance of it was that they already had agreed to hire you. I was told that is not true, and that you were number one on their list. So they were looking at the list and they thought you would be the best guy to do that show. And Jason Wolf apparently told me he was out of town when you did that and he actually called in on the show, correct? Mike Adams: He did. Yeah, he called in and that that was one of the funniest parts of that show. When the the guy that's responsible for the hiring process actually called in and talked about it. But you know what? I I waited a long time. I did a lot of part time. I was on the big show for many years to Glenn Ordway: Long time. Mike Adams: guests on the I did the weekend show, the Mike and the Monster baseball show, which was one of the great joys of my broadcasting career working with Dick Raditz. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, we'll get to him. Mike Adams: and I was bouncing around, you know, a lot and I had I i in the time I've known you, I've known you thirty years, but since ninety four, ninety five ish, I guess. And I've gone through a divorce, you know, five job changes. I got you know, arrested at a car wash for for possession of marijuana, and it wasn't even mine. I told the cop when he when he Glenn Ordway: Yeah, but it that but hold on, Mikey. It doesn't make a difference whether it's yours. Yeah Mike Adams: I I know. Well it did to me, 'cause mine was better. My mine I told the cop, he said I said, That's not mine. He goes, no, I said, Mine's in my golf bag. You know, I I heah Glenn Ordway: Go arrest me on the golf course. Mike Adams: so it's like and it's four the date was four twenty. April twentieth. Yeah, nineteen ninety Glenn Ordway: that that's unbelievable. I didn't know that. Mike Adams: four. I so I get I get arrested, handcuffed, and I'm like I'm th I thought the cop was kidding. I'm like I'm singing bad boys, bad boys Glenn Ordway: Who w what do you what do you mean the cop was kidding? You th you thought that wait Mike Adams: I didn't know it's it was two o'clock. Glenn Ordway: a minute, you thought this was one of those charity events where the cops go out and arrest people and you have to pay money for the charity? Mike Adams: Well the problem was that, you know, because I had been an anchor at Channel Three in Hartford, you know, all the people in Connecticut, and this happened in Vernon, Connecticut at the Mr. Sparkle car wash at two o'clock in the morning. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. So it's Glenn Ordway: Mr. S hold on, hold on. The name was Mr Sparkle. Mike Adams: two AM. My car's a mess. I I'm driving home from my NECN TV show. It's like almost two AM. And I pull in, I'm vacuuming my car. You know, it's like I'm got the hose going. I'm just vacuuming. I didn't know there was weed in the back. So the cop pulls in, he goes, he goes, he shines the flashlight on. He goes, What are doing? Now the hose is going. You know how loud those fucking things are? So Glenn Ordway: Yeah, that loud. Mike Adams: I look at him, I go, I put it on his sleeve. I the hose was lit. I said, I'm vacuuming my car. He goes, All right, stand back over there. Shines the light in the back. There's this little edge of a baggie sticking out of the back seat. I'm like, I don't drive in the backseat of my car. I I usually sta stay in the front. So he says, Pull that out of there. Pull it out. I pull out the bag and there's a little bit of weed in there. A little tiny bit and a roach or something, Glenn Ordway: A little bit. Yeah. Yeah. Mike Adams: The cop says, What's that? What's that? He's got the light shining on it. I go, I said, it looks like weed to me, you know. I don't know. I'm not born yesterday, but so he goes, All right, he handcuffs me. And of course, the big deal wasn't that two o'clock in the morning, the it made the It made the Hartford Current, the Springfield Paper, because I was working at NECN at the time too. It was in the Manchester Journal Inquirer, it was in the Boston Herald, the Boston Globe that I Sportscaster busted, all these stupid headlines. Yes. Glenn Ordway: And it was a big deal then. It's much different now. If you did get picked up at Mr. Sparkle car wash now with a joint, it's not Mr. Sparkle it's nothing. But in those days it was a big deal, right? Yeah, exactly. Right. Mike Adams: Mr. Sparkle. I wouldn't even get a rest. The cop would just take it and smoke it. at that these days. So it was in the USA today. Remember the state by state that says, Colorado, Glenn Ordway: Yes. Mike Adams: man Connecticut, sportscaster arrested in the state. My grandmother saw it in Albany. She was ninety-nine years old, and she's like, Holy shit. So So Glenn Ordway: Put it right over the top, Mikey. Mike Adams: of course at NECN, they're like all concerned, you know, Phil Balboni, you you such a was a button-down turd that guy. So he Glenn Ordway: The old channel five general manager for years, right? Yeah. Yes, remember. Mike Adams: Yes. And he was running NECN. So, they're all concerned because I had the only ratings on that on that network at the time. And so I told him I'll tell I'll take a drug test. So then they said, Okay. So a couple weeks later they come to me and they say, You don't take that drug test. And my agent, Kenny, says, Tell them you'll take the drug test if everybody else on the staff takes a drug test. All the NECN guys. And there were people there smoking weed every day. You know, there's no question about it. Glenn Ordway: That guy Pito, he was probably smoking weed all the time, right? Mike Adams: I love I love Peter, man. He's he's one of the f the true great people I've ever worked with. Glenn Ordway: I liked them on the air. Mike Adams: he's very funny. You know, the best thing the best Peter story ended up in the book with Keith Oberman's book with Dan Patrick. there's a chapter called That'll Happen. B Bill Peter was constipated all the time. He'd go into the into the men's room at NECN with a bunch of books and he'd go in there for an hour. So he's gonna Glenn Ordway: No. Mike Adams: Yeah, you know, yeah. So he's going into the bathroom one day and he's got all these books. I said, I was watching the news and some guy had been let out of prison on a work release and he killed his wife and kids and then waited for the cops to come take him back to prison. I'm like, I said, Pito, look at this story. The guy gets out of prison on work release, kills his wife and kids, and then goes right back. And Pito says, Well, that'll happen. I said, That we mean that'll happen. But Pito was wonderful and he was great on that show. And that was a that was a really fun thing. You we we didn't know what we were gonna do on a given night. We had a great producer, Eric Evangelista, and we He'd just give us ideas and we just do it live on TV. Glenn Ordway: You had that guy Murray, right? That guy was that his name? Murray? Yeah. Maury. That was his name. Maury. Yeah. And Mike Adams: Maury. Maury Levine. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Yeah. He runs NBC ten so Right. And it was live. The thing too with big old is with tape delay and all that stuff, you can y you can edit out when people call in and prank you. On that show we had no delay. Live T V, eleven o'clock at night, people would call in, we give the number, and sometimes I I'd say, Okay, Joe, we need him, go ahead, Joe. He'd go, Yeah, Mike, yeah, fuck you. And it would be like Okay, thanks for calling. we had Glenn Ordway: No delay, great. Mike Adams: no delay, so it was always like your adrenaline was up because you didn't know what people were gonna say, Could expose you as a weirdo. Glenn Ordway: So so I'll give you one final thing because I want to go back to your days in in Hartford, not necessarily at the at the car wash, but the start of your career. But Jason Wolf told me that you were high on the list, but they still hadn't made a decision. And he was going to make a decision when he came back into town. He was out of town at some broadcasting convention or whatever, but he called you up that night and he said that the bit was so brilliant. And he had no idea we were gonna pull it off, because nobody had ever told him. Nobody told anybody. You and I kept that quiet. Producers didn't even know it until they started to figure it out as it unraveled. But the thing was, Jason Wolf told me I heard it. I'm listening because my phone is ringing off the hook of people calling me, you got a problem back at the radio station. Mike Adams is is the taking over the station. He's locked himself in the studio Mike Adams: Right. With no guns. Glenn Ordway: with no guns. And he said. It was such a brilliant bit that he gave you the job that night. He made the decision that night and said, Screw it. Adams is our guy. And you did it for eleven years. You did a great job with that show. It was terrific. Mike Adams: Yeah, he didn't have to fire me. I was there eleven years. I think I was the longest tenured night host on the on the station. Glenn Ordway: You might have been. Mike Adams: And it was great because honestly we had good we had some great really good producers you know. And anyway, we had guys like John Ryder coming in, you know, and he John Ryder's a very totally deadpan guy, but he had a great sense of humor. Glenn Ordway: Loved. I love John Ryder. What a good guy. Zedpan, but into sports. And you'd sit there with John and you'd you'd have a conversation with John Ryder just about anything that's going on in life and whatever. Next thing did you see the Angels game last night? You see so-and-so had three R4. And I'm sitting there going, Who Mike Adams: Right. I know. Glenn Ordway: gives a shit, John? But that was John Ryder. He was in. So I want to take you back to the beginning of your career because for those people that have enjoyed you over the years and the crazy, zany, bizarre shit that you have done. This was the what Mike Adams wanted to do originally. He was a TV sportscaster. He was doing the six at eleven cast in Hartford, and this is what he was like. Where's the comedy? Where the bits? Where's the farting? Mike Adams: That's his mother. Glenn Ordway: Watch this. Watch they Mike Adams: Yes, yes. Glenn Ordway: show Mikey again. This is Jeff Bagwell's mom. Why can't we get players like that? Mike Adams: Jan Bagwell. Glenn Ordway: Watch this. Look at this straight laced Mikey Adams. Mike Adams: Pack of butts pack of butts in my pocket. Look at Glenn Ordway: just this un unbelievable wikey. Mike Adams: I got to meet Yogi Berra that day, though. That was at Shea Stadium, and Bagwell homered in that game. We were up, we sent Channel 3 sent us down there, and I ran it to his mother, sitting right behind home play, Jan Bagwell. And then Jeff gets up there, hits a home run, and we got it all on tape. She's going, ooh, woohoo. But he was you know, rookie of the year that year, Jeff Bagwell. Yeah, but that was my last piece Glenn Ordway: Yeah, w Mike Adams: on Channel Three. Glenn Ordway: so that could have been what you would have been for your entire career. that's Mike Adams: I know. Glenn Ordway: straighter lace than Ted Sorantis, I think. I don't know. Mike Adams: Well, Channel Three, in Hartford was big. it was it was like the Channel Four thing going on up here where by suddenly I'm on TV and and my T V career ended unceremoniously when high def came into existence. You know, all of a sudden I was like, Okay, radio's better for you. But at Channel Three, I mean I worked with Gail King every day. you all these guys. Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Gail King. Yeah, wow. Mike Adams: She was one of the co anchors and you know, I I had a good time there, but Glenn Ordway: So so she became like best friends with Oprah and you never got invited to the Oprah parties? No? Didn't work out Mike Adams: I know. Glenn Ordway: for you? Mike Adams: should Gail's phone ring off the hook, it'd always be Oprah. it because her desk was right next to mine. hello. i is Gail King there, please. It is Oprah. Who's calling? Pretend it you pretend you don't know. I said, This is Oprah. I'd say, could you spell that for me? She'd say, O P R A H. Last name? She goes, Who is this? So it's Mikey. She goes, Give me Gail. Go get Gail, you jerk. You know. But Gail Gail King was very nice to work. And channel three was a great thing for me because it It gave me enabled me to get the job in Boston and that's really where the fun happened. With with you on the big show and and and doing the Glenn Ordway: Yeah, so we're gonna Yeah. Mike Adams: the the T V the sports world show. Glenn Ordway: So we're gonna get to the sports world. We're gonna get to the John Dennis conflict that you and he had, which a lot of it was kind of fabricated, but yeah, a lot Mike Adams: Bre briefly, yeah. Glenn Ordway: of it was fabricated. But anyway, I I found this, Mikey, and this is unbelievable, but apparently, Mike, when you when you were doing TV in was it NECN? You also were working with John Dennis in doing stuff. Watch this. Look at this look, look at that jacket, look at the jacket. Mike Adams: Look at my hair. Look at the A mannequin. Glenn Ordway: my god, you straight and boring, huh? Mike Adams: I was awful, wasn't I? So stiff. Glenn Ordway: Yes, you're very sniff. But watch who he goes to here for the reporter on the scene. Give us all the facts. Mike Adams: Get on with it, Mikey! Glenn Ordway: Here we go. Ha. Look at that. Mike Adams: Look at him. Glenn Ordway: Mikey Adams and John Dennis together. Yeah, that's way it's long, long time ago. So you Mike Adams: And that's a long time ago. That's the eighties, man. That's a that's like Yeah, Dino Glenn Ordway: used used to get into these battles with John Dennis. I remember the one where he was so pissed off because he thought you left the studio like shit the night before, and he went ballistic at you. And there Mike Adams: Yes, and and I didn't. Glenn Ordway: was another incident I remember where they were down in Florida and you were. pissed off. You were pissed off because you did they didn't send you to the Super Bowl and they didn't send you to Florida. And Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: so you took it out in John Dennison you you called him like fat and you were calling him every name in the book and it pissed him off. Mike Adams: I did. Yeah. I was saying they're fat spoiled Yeah, they're fat spoiled guys down there in Florida doing nothing. They go they go to one game and then they go drinking and all that stuff. But you know what? It's true about the Super Bowl. At WEI, the Patriots went to what what six or seven Super Bowls or something like that? I went I went to none of them. Everybody got to go accept Well, that's right. Everybody Glenn Ordway: It went to more than that. They lost a few. They won six of Mike Adams: Everybody got to go except me. And I remember Glenn Ordway: Right. Yes. Mike Adams: meeting you at the first Superbowl, the only Super Bowl I've ever been to, which was the Packers in ninety seven against the Patriots. And I was shit faced I was shit faced the whole time I was there. I know. I know. I was Yes right. Yeah. I was cocked. I was I was doing b walk Glenn Ordway: In in New Orleans. Yeah. It was New Orleans. I expected that. So you you know how they how they bring down the floats right there in Bourbon Street? You were on one of the floats as they were coming down. No, no, you know what? I know what you were doing. Cause I walked into a bar Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: in in during that time, and of course it was a jazz band playing. There were no vocals except you were up there on the stage actually doing a vocal to the jazz band. Yes. Yes. I d I do remember this. Yeah, I really? I didn't know that. Yeah. Mike Adams: With a washboard. I was playing the washboard and singing these Creole songs. I'm like, What the hell is this? I was cocked. yeah. I got I Callahan and I we got we all got we all got really, really drunk that whole time that I was there. And I don't remember much of it, but it d I Glenn Ordway: Well, it was our first time out doing anything big like that because teams had been losing in Boston for hundreds of years, So Mike Adams: Right. But then subsequent Super Bowls, you'd think once once out of eight or nine times I get a shot that nothing. So I was pissing on the air about it. And and you know, Dino and I be the thing is that Dino and I get along great. We're we're friends. there's no issues between us, but th Glenn Ordway: No, I know that. Mike Adams: those on air things were he said he said the the cleanup after Mike Adams stuff could left the junk in the in the studio. That was famous, a famous sound soundbite drop in. But he knew that it was just a bit because We used to get big daddies to bring us food and there was always chicken wings, pizza when we ate. We ate like kings, Glenn Ordway: that place was great, Mikey. Yeah, in Brighton, right? Yeah, that was great. Mike Adams: So I left the studio and and I didn't clean up the stuff that was there. But Dino went off. He's like, There are snot rags, there are greasy tissues here, and he was cripping me on the air. But I never got pissed about that because he told me it was a Glenn Ordway: Well, a big part of that station, and a lot of people didn't understand it. Some people thought that it was mean all the time. A big part of it was we had a habit of shitting on another show. And Mike Adams: Each other. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: so it kind of worked as a marketing vehicle for us. So if I shit on the morning show, they're gonna come back it and shit on me the next morning. Same thing with you and them. And you want and so they started talking about you. So I remember. When them being down in Florida, they talked about you for an hour. You couldn't ask Mike Adams: Yeah, they were pissed. Glenn Ordway: for better publicity because if I'm a listener, I'm sitting there going, now I gotta turn on, Planet Mikey tonight and find out what Mikey's reaction is gonna be Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: is, Mike Adams: Yeah, the inner soap opera type stuff that goes back and forth. But you know what? At at WEEI, we all got along with with a couple of notable exceptions. I mean, I tried to be get along with everybody because you I didn't know I'm gonna be working with them or whatever. but those those on air shtick things that we did back and forth. You know, the thing is too, like Dale, for example. Dale Arnold. Well, you gotta say it with two syllables Dale. Dale. This is Dale Arnold. Glenn Ordway: Ay yo. There y'all. Mike Adams: This is Dale Arnold. It's two syllables for him. he didn't Glenn Ordway: It's a main accent, I think. Mike Adams: he never liked me, you know. he didn't Glenn Ordway: Really? Mike Adams: like my he didn't well, he didn't like my my my demeanor and all that. It was too silly for him, you know. He was a little more straight laced. And yeah, he's in the he's in the broadcaster's hall of fame with you now. He keeps Glenn Ordway: He is. He got in this past year. Yep. Mike Adams: that tr thing right up on his mantle next to his Eagle Scout badge. But Dale didn't like my, and I didn't care. We didn't have any fights or anything like that, but I just knew that he didn't like me. I the rumor was that someone told me that they overheard a conversation with Dale when they when I were they were considering me for the nighttime slot. And Dale said, Well, I don't care who they put on nights as long as it's not Adams. So I said, well, that's great. Now I know. Now I know he doesn't like me. and that's okay, because it it didn't, we didn't really cross paths that much. You know, it wasn't, I wasn't on his show or whatever. I'd see him sometimes when I come in and do your show. But I can understand people not liking me or whatever it is. I but I didn't like I didn't make really any enemies till the end. I didn't real enemies until 'cause Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I would I would say Mike Adams: I was there twenty three years total, you know. I was there when f Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I would say I would say Mutt and you had major difficulties. Right? That's safe to say. Mike Adams: Yes, absolutely. Glenn Ordway: And apparently you haven't gotten over it because I saw a tweet recently where you photoshopped a Mutt picture of his face into the body of a monkey. So you obviously I don't understand so I Mike Adams: Mm-hmm. X is actually much body. Glenn Ordway: don't understand it. I can understand you having conflicts when you're working with a guy and you can go into it and tell me what he did. But years later, you can't let that go. Mike Adams: No, I like for me it's now just fun. It's like one of those obvious things like Jer Glenn Ordway: No, okay. Mike Adams: Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. they still refer to their. But what happened there was they stuck once Lou Merloney's show with Mutt got canceled, Phil Phil says, Well, we got to find a place for Mutt. So he Glenn Ordway: Midday, yeah. Phil Zachary. Mike Adams: stuck them on my show. Now, that's okay. I don't care. I'll work with anybody. But Mutt didn't want to contribute. He just he was really not happy to be in that scenario with me. And so I couldn't even get him to engage. I had to to get him to answer me, I had to say, Do you know what I mean, Mutt? And then he'd say, yeah, well, and then he'd lift his head up from the newspaper or whatever he was reading, and he'd he'd say something. But he ri clearly didn't want to be there. He wasn't happy. And so what happened was after two weeks on the show, and it wasn't going well, I I see Phil Sirk Phil Phil not Phil Circ, and Phil Phil Phil Zachary. Glenn Ordway: That's take that's way back. Yeah. Phil Zachary was the general manager. Yeah. Mike Adams: He goes, hey, Mikey, how's how's Mutt doing? I said, Well, just like this. I said, I I don't think he's really happy to be there. And he says, Well, you you tell Mutt he better get his act together, because I did him a solid by giving him that that slot. You know what? I said, Okay, okay. So now I don't want to get him fired. So I just went along with it and and he still didn't contribute. And I didn't know that Minahan was egging him on to to to go after me and to try to replace me. So finally, the night that it blew up was he said that I went to to the management and tried to get him fired. They asked me. This all happened on the air. And Glenn Ordway: This was on the air. This was on the air, right? All on the air, right. Mike Adams: he this we start the show at 620, and he's he's on me over that. And I first of I didn't go to anybody. They came to me, asked me how much doing it. I didn't say I didn't trash him and say fire or anything like that. But they asked me. So He says, you went behind my back to management. Try to No, I didn't. So, but this is all happening on the air. So I'm I'm trying to defend myself in an obviously unfair situation because I didn't want to get him fired. And we got I wanted to do his work to actually contribute, engage on the program. But he wouldn't. So he attacks the attacks me on the air. So I get we then we go at it. We really go and at it on the air. And of course, Mina Minahan's at home tweeting. tune in right now. It's Mikey and Mutt. They're having a big fight, because he always likes to egg shit on. So then that we go to a we go to Glenn Ordway: Just doing his marketing thing. Yeah. Mike Adams: a break. I stand up, I take my fucking headphones and I throw at Mutt, you little prick. What are you trying to do? Glenn Ordway: It's assault. Yeah. Mike Adams: So we then I get a a memo from Kevin Graham and for you engaged in a f Glenn Ordway: Program director. Mike Adams: in a fight, you know, with this if if you do it again, you you know, They basically threatening to fire me, you know, over that. And I didn't even start it. He did. So that's how the Mutt thing happened. But the whole time it was Minahan telling him, then and in the end, as it paid off for Mutt because he ended up replacing me, and Minahan really engineered that entire thing. So that was the end. That was the end for me. Glenn Ordway: All right. And obviously, you know, you're not letting it go. I mean, and I get it. I mean, you know, you Mike Adams: No fuck Glenn Ordway: but I think if you look back at it with Mutt, you were the crazy zany guy. I've described that numerous times so far here on Mike Adams: And he was Ted Sarandis. Glenn Ordway: the pod. And yes, he was the straight laced guy at the time. Now, I don't know if you've Mike Adams: Boring. Glenn Ordway: seen any of what he's doing right now, but he's with Barstool Sports and he's totally different character. Now it's almost as if he's taking a couple of pages out of the Mikey Adams playbook because he's going to these watch parties in New York with the Barstool sports guys and the guys from Boston and and New York. And he's painting his face and he's painting his body and he's wearing costumes and it I the the only thing he hasn't done yet is Mike Adams: Cute, cute stuff. Yeah, you know the thing is Glenn Ordway: wear a monkey suit. But maybe if you send it to him, maybe he'll think that's a good idea. And Mike Adams: don't think for a second, Big O, he doesn't wear that monkey suit at night. Those are his jammies. But no, the the whole idea with Glenn Ordway: Okay. So it's so maybe now, maybe now if the two of you are working together, it Mike Adams: No, it won't happen. Glenn Ordway: might be a totally different relationship. I don't know. Who knows? Mike Adams: No, I I don't it's hard to have a good relationship with someone who ha caused you to lose your job when you have a a family defeat. And that's the first thing he came up with. Glenn Ordway: So you think he he caused you to lose your job? I'm not sure he did. I'm not sh Mike Adams: Well he and he and Minahan together. Yeah, there's no question. Glenn Ordway: I'm not I think that's a stretch. I I'm not saying that Minahan didn't egg him on and that wasn't part of the the the push. But I don't think the intention was let's get Mikey Adams out on the street. I don't I I I'm not sure that was the plan. Mike Adams: Well, you have to question that though when when i when my replacement ends up being the the little lap dog for Minahan, Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Mike Adams: which is Mutt, and it's look good for them, good for them. They're both happy, I'm happy. I don't care, but it it is that's exactly what happened. And I was pissed about that and I I I would I would not like those guys for that very reason alone, you know, and I told Minahan to his face, you know, what I thought of you know, Minahan likes likes that kind of shit. He lives for that kind of stuff. Glenn Ordway: He does. Mike Adams: Contra yeah. It's his thing. Glenn Ordway: He does. And that's part of his act and you know it's worked very successfully for him and you know he's still doing it with with with Barstool a lot of that a lot of that stuff now. Mike Adams: Good for him. I don't listen but good for him. I ho I hope he's successful and happy. Glenn Ordway: Well Mike Adams: Okay, I hope he's successful. Glenn Ordway: I was gonna say I'm not sure you are are being sincere when you say that, but so Mike Adams: Well, I've worked with thousands of people in the in the broadcasting industry. And I gotta say, of all the people I've worked with, the biggest dick, and I don't mean physically, actual penis, but the the Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Mike Adams: the hardest guy in the world to I think w I think is Minahan. he he's so he's so into his own, I'm the greatest at this and geez and podcast Jesus. You can't spell I I, me, mine, or inane without Minahan. A little wordplay. Glenn Ordway: I never thought I never thought of it that way, but I'm putting the vowels together right now on the okay. All right. You did tell him you hated him right to his face. Yes, life is Mike Adams: I hope he's happy, I told him I hate him right to his face and it it's like Yeah. Well it was what Glenn Ordway: life is too short, you know. I'm I'm trying to get the three of them back together, and we're gonna do it next month with Menahan and Callahan and and Dino because they owe each other so much for the success that they all had with that show for so many years. And I don't know, maybe it's the old man in me now that I'm sitting there saying, I I don't wanna go to my grave just seeking revenge on all these people, Mikey. to me Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: it's I I I don't wanna do that anymore. I'm more interested in Mike Adams: No, I'm not seeking revenge. I what I'm doing is I'm just telling it like it is from my point of view. I don't I don't like those guys. Glenn Ordway: I hear that. Mike Adams: And I have really good reasons not to like those guys. But everybody else I got along great with at that station. I loved your show. I loved you. And and Dino, I mean, look, we went back and forth a little bit, but I'm I'm very good friends with Dino, Callahan, everybody. but those two guys, you know, I I don't owe them any kind of revenge, but I owe everybody honesty about what happened and why I don't like them. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. I want to talk about a couple of other former baseball players. One is Bill Lee. You and Bill Lee became the best of friends. He was the best man at your wedding. And you were really, really tight with him. Obviously, you you both had that zany you know, comedy angle to it. Bill, it was always a joke. I remember in the seventies. Covering the Red Sox. And anytime I interviewed Bill Lee, it was always Bill had a comedy act. That wasn't, you know, I'm sitting there talking about the Evas pitch last night, and he's making it a comedy act. And he was brilliant at it. And, you know, he could get a batter out throwing the ball 58 miles per hour. And there aren't Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: many people that could ever do that. But I see you constantly on Twitter and other things with. Bill Lee, you're also very political right now. You are obviously very much to the to the right if we're looking at the the scale. Bill is total opposite to the left. And yet you guys are best Mike Adams: W way left. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: friends. And I look around in society today and you just don't see it. There's so much of a split right now. The left and the right can't get together. So I need to ask you the question: how the hell are you such great friends, the two of you? And yet you're so tolerant. Of each other's political persuasion. Mike Adams: Two to two reasons. First of all, baseball. We both love baseball the same amount, and I couldn't play as well, you know, obviously, and he still plays at seventy-nine years old, you know, with the savannah bananas. He's unbelievable. Glenn Ordway: Yes. Mike Adams: Secondly, the weed. No. He's one of the really great, interesting people, very, very and he's a very loyal guy, a very loyal friend. Yeah, he's best man my wedding. He's left of Sheguara. I mean, he's way, way over there. Glenn Ordway: Yes. No question. Mike Adams: And I'm I've moved to the I was I thought a centrist a libertarian but Glenn Ordway: I thought you were, yes. Mike Adams: I'm moving to the right because the the Democrats make such stupid decisions on all kinds of weird shit. Lad, let's let guys play women's sports. Let's let everybody cross the border and come live where they w you know. There's certain things you gotta do when you're running a country. And I I'm very strong on that 'cause I got two boys that are young and I want their the world to be left in a good place for them. And I Glenn Ordway: So do you ever talk politics with Bill at all? Mike Adams: Well no, we we don't. We we we throw little things out there, but you know, and he Glenn Ordway: 'Cause my guess is Bill probably likes the border to be wide open. That would be my my guess. Mike Adams: Well, he he could live in Cuba the way his he's been to Cuba, right? And played baseball Glenn Ordway: I know. Mike Adams: down there. He's crazy. But the thing about him is that he ran for president in eighty in nineteen eighty eight on the rhinoceros ticket with Hunter S. Thompson Glenn Ordway: I do remember this, yeah. Mike Adams: was his running mate. Hunter S. Thompson and Bill Lee, and Bill Lee's platform, they What's your platform? He says, No guns, no butter. Both can kill you. he was a weird guy. But butter yeah, butter's better than yeah, than that other shit. Glenn Ordway: He was wrong about butter, by the way. Butter's good for you now. butter's good. Yeah. Mike Adams: But I'll tell you what, he's been a really, really good friend of mine. He calls all the time, we talk and and I love the guy and I don't care when it gets to s you with with friendships, y politics should never enter into a friendship. It's so wrong. Glenn Ordway: I agree with that. But it does it does so much today. People lose friends now, Mike, because they vote Mike Adams: Yeah. Family members. Glenn Ordway: differently than the other person. I don't care how you vote. I have my feelings, my thoughts, and you have yours. And why can't the rest of the time us still be friends and find some type of connection? So I find myself less and less talking politics with with people and with with friends right now because it's just not It's just not worth it. But I always wondered about that, especially when you had drifted more to the right, as you said. And that Mike Adams: So they're right, yes. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: relationship with Bill. And I I see you all the time on social media and you and he are are so damn tight. When when you when you got married, correct me if I'm wrong, didn't you wasn't it on TV? Wasn't it a TV show and you got the TV station to pay for your wedding? Mike Adams: Yes, that's really weird because I got fi Glenn Ordway: How did you do that? Mike Adams: Well I was at the zone. Remember for about four months, Glenn Ordway: Yes. Mike Adams: you know, with seven listeners. We we were like that that signal was w awful and yeah, fifteen, ten the zone. And I took that 'cause I didn't Glenn Ordway: Fifteen ten. I but that's where I started in Boston fifteen ten. Mike Adams: I I didn't have full time work and I went over there and it didn't work out. It was Mike Kellogg was running the station and it was just a nightmare. and so I got fired, I got fired on the air. Well The glu the the herald put the story on the in the newspaper. It's six a.m. We're about to go on the air for the morning show. And it's it's the herald says, Adam's off the air. Jim Baker or somebody. I said, What what's this? So we were looking at the I'm all done, it says. The paper says, I'm all done. I've been fine. I said, Well, we're here. We're doing the show. What's it reading the newspaper? So we did an hour and Glenn Ordway: So hold on. You're you're about to do the show. Nobody has told you you're fired, but the newspaper already has it. Wow. Mike Adams: Right, correct. Had the story. So now I'm on the we're going on the year and say, I guess we're getting fired today. It was me and S Mark Linahan and, that girl Jillian, whatever her name is. So getting fired. So it goes till seven twenty. We're talking about this. You know, imagine this. Th Mike Kellogg walks into the building, I see him through the glass, he walks in. I we take a break at seven twenty. I go into his office, I say, What's the story on this? You know. He goes, I'm sorry you had to find out this way. He said, All right, fine. You we we you want me to throw it to the network so I can go home? Okay. fired during a commercial break at the zone, 1510 the zone, which was the worst nightmare of all. Just even working there was a nightmare. it was pathetic. So I go home, Jason Wolf calls me and he says, You can come back to EEI anytime you want to. I said, I love you, man. Thank you. Hung up and I'd already announced on the year that I was getting married to Christine, who I've been married to now for 23 years. I had announced that on the year we were gonna have the wedding in the studio on the radio show. But now I'm fired. I get a call. Yes, I know. So I called I get Glenn Ordway: So you have no you have no venue for the wedding, but you're already committed because you're engaged. You got a problem. You got a problem. Mike Adams: a call from Comcast, and they say, You can get married in our studio. They had a new studio with Guinness, all the Guinness badging and all that stuff. I said, fine. Glenn Ordway: You always want you always want the git the Guinness badging for your wedding. It's always a good backdrop, yeah. Mike Adams: I said, that's that's fine. We'll we'll get married in a new studio. They provided the limos, the flowers, the Guinness. I mean, we had this big party in their new studios and we invited all kinds of freaky people. And Bill, of course, was the best man. And they did it, they taped it all. We, you know, we did the TV stuff on their on their air. And then of course, my my w wife's parents in Ohio, very straight-laced, church-going people, they flew out for the wedding and they're They they enter a t T V studio with Guinness girls walking around give giving out stuff and they say, What is this? What is my daughter getting into with this clown? This is awful. And I I could tell by the looks on their face they were in shock. And all my father in law said to me, he's now eighty four years old, he said, Just take good care of her. He thought he was worried. But we've been married twenty three years and my wife is very nicest person ever. Yep. She's great. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: She's a sweetheart. I've always liked her. Yeah. That that that is great. I I want to get into the monster Dick Raditz because I know you did a show with him. You and he had a phenomenal relationship. I had a great relationship with him. and I told Dick the story when we first talked to him about coming in and doing the big show. And I was in awe because I was a little kid. And the only reason to go to Fenway Park in sixty-four, sixty-five. Mike Adams: Was him. Glenn Ordway: Was to see the monster Dick Raditz. And there was a good chance you were going to see him, even though he was a closer. For those people that don't understand how different the game was back in the 60s, Dick would come in in the fourth or fifth inning and he would close the game. He would Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: finish the game. And the team sucked. They had Don Budden at shortstop. It was an awful team. They were terrible. It's it's interesting that they kind of compared, Mike Adams: Tick Stewart. Glenn Ordway: yeah, Dick sew it at first base. You know, he had the Mike Adams: Chuck Shilling. Glenn Ordway: cement glove. And A lot of people compared the first two and a half months of this season to those Red Sox teams of the sixties, the bad news bears. But the only Mike Adams: Yeah. We we were that bad. Glenn Ordway: reason to go was Dick Raddis. He was bigger than life, this gigantic guy. To to to a young kid, he was almost like a a a a big, you know, you know, what are those Tron machines that they have? He was like that type of Mike Adams: Yes, right. Glenn Ordway: guy. So we end up bringing him in the studio. I had no idea about his personality or what he was about. And I wanna tell you. This right now, and I know you're going to agree with me. If Dick were still with us today and he wanted to do a podcast and he wanted to reveal all of the true stories behind the scenes in baseball, he would be a gigantic hit. Because this is what Mikey and I and others on the big show would hear. Dick was funny on the air, but Dick was measured. We go to a commercial break, he takes Mike Adams: Yep. Stories. Glenn Ordway: what the last thing we just said. And he goes into this whole fucking story during the break, and you're sitting there going, Holy shit, Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: unbelievable stories, right? Mike Adams: Yeah. And he the thing about him was twice he pitched nine innings in relief as the closer. He eighteen inning a game against the Yankees. He came into the ninth, s stayed till the eighteenth. he was and it was the first major leaguer I ever met when I was ten years old, nineteen sixty four. And he and Jim Bowton were at a guest guest speakers at him and it he walks in and my dad was with me, and Monsters you know, huh I'm like looking up, my father goes, Is he as big as you thought he was? I go, Yeah You know, Yeah And Raditz goes, How ya doing, kid? To me, first thing he ever said to me. It was also ironically the last thing he ever said to me. Glenn Ordway: Really? Mike Adams: Yeah, before he did before he died. He w that's always a how you doing, kid, you know. and he'd call and he'd go, Hey Mikey and it w unmistakably his voice. You know, he had that deep Hey Mikey, I'm on the phone. hey, how you doing? He it's me, the old right hander. The old right hander. That's how he always introduced himself on the phone. As if it could be anybody else with that booming voice of his. But he always is he was not even sixty eight years old when he fell down those stairs and died. Awful. And I love that guy. Glenn Ordway: Fell down the stairs. It was a tragic ending, and he was having he was having some balance problems, you know. He got very heavy, and he was having some of those issues, but no, it was it so tragic. I I do remember so he we were talking about some scandal that was going on in baseball or sports. And he starts talking about it and he gives his opinion. And out of nowhere, he does this on the air. He stops talking. He says, I'm gonna stop right now. And he said, I just don't think it's fair. And I'm engaging in it as well, talking about this gossip shit. He didn't say shit on the radio, the gossip stuff that that we're dealing with with these these professional athletes. And I'll tell you why. Because in my day, we did things that were 10 times worse. So I feel guilty right now sitting here and talking and trying to make my opinions known. Mike Adams: When I had all that. Glenn Ordway: About something that that an athlete did. We did 10 times. Here was the difference. We never had cameras, so nobody could pick up a a recording. Nobody could record anybody else. And the second thing is, we were out drinking with all the writers. We had the writers in our back pocket. So Mike Adams: Sure. Glenn Ordway: the writers were never going to say anything negative about it, because guess what? The writers were doing exactly what we were doing, if not worse. And Mike Adams: That's right. So they can't they can't preach against you when they're when they're behaving the same way. You know Glenn Ordway: And from that point on, and then of course we'll go to the break and then he'd tell us the stories of what the the stuff they used to do and it was he was right. He was ten times worse than Mike Adams: Huge. I asked him one time on the air, I said, Monster, what's the most beers you ever had? And you know, he goes, 24, a whole case. And then he goes, But my teammates told me I had 30 one night. His teammates had to tell him he had 30. But he monster was the funniest guy. And you know, I I walk down the hall, we go down and smoke cigarettes. Back then I I smoked cigarettes and not this little vape thing. And we'd go out and we'd smoke because he smoked butts too. So We would take off during the the breaks and he'd always s say funny stuff on the hallway. So one time he stopped and he let out this rip roaring gas he he it was like it the so it sounded like this. I said, Roster. I said that Glenn Ordway: Always funny. Say it's always funny. Mike Adams: sounded like a dog bar. He he goes he says, It did, didn't it? He he owned up to right away. But the the greatest lime he ever had was he's after he had his like sixty-fifth doctor's appointment. Sixty five years old. He came back to the studio. He goes, Well, I went to the doctor for my sixty-fifth birthday. I said, Yeah, what'd he say? He told me never waste a heart on and never trust a fart. that that's the kind of humor he had, but he was a I love the guy Glenn Ordway: You would you would you you were talking earlier about your friend Bill Pito used to go and spend an hour in in the men's room. Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: Raditz would be late coming back from breaks. And the reason Mike Adams: And sweaty. Glenn Ordway: the reason he did it is because he actually had to go to the men's room and it had to be number two. And I remember him coming back late one time and we waited till the next break, and I said, What the hell are you doing? Why would you ever come in to the men's room and sit in a public men's room to do number two. And he said, 'cause I fill up the bowl and I don't want to do that at home because I might have a plumbing issue. Mike Adams: Well, yeah, the famous meatloaf story where he went in there and he left this thing, it looked like a chocolate gift cake. it was huge. And it wouldn't spit, even though they had hydraulic toilets there, it was just spin around. It wouldn't go down. It would it's like trying to suck Glenn Ordway: Yes. He liked the hydraulic toilets though. He did. Mike Adams: the thing down, but it wouldn't just keep spinning because it was huge. People were putting candles Glenn Ordway: I had never heard of anybody that would d Mike Adams: in it. Glenn Ordway: that would do that at work. That's just something you don't do at work or i if you're at a mall or something like that. P but no, I don't Mike Adams: Right. But when you're six six, three hundred and eighty pounds, there's it's probably pretty urgent. Yeah, yeah. And then he Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Yeah. I would I Mike Adams: come at the time he came back from the the the bathroom, 'cause I did a lot of shows with Monster, he came back, he's all sweaty and a couple of minutes late. I said, Monster, where where where where you been? He goes, I just took a shit, looked like a statue of Hayward Sullivan. Glenn Ordway: Larry Johnson would tell me because they worked for a while together. It was him, Mustard, and Johnson. It was the T and the creature. Mike Adams: The teacher, the preacher, and the creature. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: And they worked for a while. And of course, as Larry was was very religious, a a devout Christian. He was a minister as well Mike Adams: Yep. Sure. Glenn Ordway: and taught kids Sunday school. And Mike Adams: Sweetheart of a guy too. Glenn Ordway: sweetheart, what a wonderful man. And we lost him, of course, as well. But he would tell me the story. He would say, You would not believe it. He said, I does Dick Raditz know that I I I I I get a little uncomfortable with some of the stories that he's telling? Cause no, because Raditz's stories Mike Adams: Yeah, he wouldn't care. Glenn Ordway: would be explicit and they would and they would be you you'd sit there and go in awe, did he just say that? Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: So that's what I'm saying. If he ever did a podcast right now, could say this stuff on the air, it'd be unbelievable. When did you when did Mike Adams: I would give a million dollars for that. Glenn Ordway: When yeah. When did you get fired at E and what happened there? Mike Adams: it's twenty sixteen. I got well that f it's the Phil it's Phil Zachary thing, you know. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: He was the general manager at the time. Yeah. Mike Adams: And you know, they said, can you come in for a programming meeting? That never happened to me in twenty three years there. I said, Okay, I know what this is about. Yeah. I'm a rookie, Glenn Ordway: We wanna discuss your show. Yeah. Mike Adams: you know. Fi I got eighteen radio jobs. I know what it's like to get so I go I go, I said, What's this about? I know what this is about, right? No, no Phil, I I talked about funny goes, Yeah, it's not good news. Okay. So and I then I said, Well, I'm sure Mutt's gonna get the job, so it's it's okay. Somebody's gonna have it. but then what really pissed me off about f that was and I I Phil was very friendly to me when I was there and he was there. He was very, come on in, talked about Glenn Ordway: I think he liked I think he liked you. I d I do. I think he liked your zany stuff. And he was an old like disc jockey and I he Mike Adams: Radio guy. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: loved the fact that you loved old music. And I do remember Mike Adams: That's right. Glenn Ordway: him having conversations with you in the hallway as I'm leaving the studio and he's sitting there telling, Hey, what about Louie Lou I? You know. Right, right, yeah. Mike Adams: Yes. Pictures of magstick men. status quo. Yeah, we go back and forth with one hit wonders. But and that that was all very enjoyable and he was very nice to me. I thought he'd like me. So I even went to a BJ Thomas concert with him. But Glenn Ordway: Really? Mike Adams: at the end, when it when it came down to me getting fired, I went in to get my stuff and he l had somebody lock me out my card key. I couldn't even go say goodbye to the office people I worked with for twenty years because I couldn't get in. They they they negated my thing I was burned the place down or something. I was kind of I was kind of insulted by that. And you know, I've been to parties where an office secretary who's been there six months would have a going-away party at the stockyard and everybody'd show up, I was there 23 years and they get locked out instead of I mean I didn't want a going-away party. I won didn't want that, but I want to be able to say goodbye to people, right? No. Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Yeah. Mike Adams: So I was pissed at Phil about that. And when I was at your Hall of Fame induction, he was there. And I told him, I said, Hey Phil, I never but got to thank you for that nice going away party you gave me at EI. And he he got a he had a weird look on his Glenn Ordway: You never forget, Mikey. You never forget. Mike Adams: face when I said that. But you know what? I you gotta be honest with people about how you feel about stuff or else how they gonna ever know, right? Glenn Ordway: Yeah, no, no question about it. I've got to tell the story about we we told a story about your wedding, about my wedding. So Mikey get Mikey Mike Adams: my God, that was a great party. Glenn Ordway: Mikey Mikey gets the invitation Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: and comes back with the a plus one. So it's like the week of the wedding. The wedding was on a Friday night. It was out in the the Berkshires are out in the mountains, and everybody's gonna drive out there for the Friday night. So I think it was like a Tuesday. And I said to Mikey, so who is your plus one? Kid wasn't married at the time. And he said, Big O, I'm working on it. And I said, Well, when are you gonna know? He said, Hopefully in the next couple days. He said, Right now, I'm scouting all of the female meteorologists and TV reporters. I'm watching the 6 and 11 newscast Mike Adams: That's right. Glenn Ordway: faithfully, and I'll find somebody. Lo Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: and behold, Mikey shows up at the wedding on Friday. And isn't he arm in arm with the meteorologist from channel twenty five? Was it channel five? Weekend. What was her name? Yeah, she was Yeah, she was a weekend Mike Adams: Channel five. Channel five. Ellen it was Ellen. Italian girl. El her name is Ellen. She was she was very nice, but that was Glenn Ordway: weekend and she was very nice. And she liked the party, by the way. She was Mike Adams: She did, and I embarrassed her at that wedding because I I was really woo hoo, Your parties Glenn Ordway: Yeah. I've been Mike Adams: were always great. Your birthday party with Heinzen and Raditz there on on the deck and your birthday party was yeah. Glenn Ordway: my God. Well, I was gonna give the rest of the the wedding story because talk about Raditz and Heinz and watching them on the dance floor was absolutely hysterical to see these two large human beings. So in the middle of it, they you know what they do at weddings. We've gotta go take pictures w with you and Sarah, can you come back and and I'm sitting, I'm I wanna party. I don't I I didn't care about the pictures. I don't think I've looked at the pictures. I've been married now for 26 years, I don't think I've looked at the pictures once. Mike Adams: Since And you look the same. Glenn Ordway: So anyway, we go back there to take the pictures. Next thing you know, some people come back out and said, You better get out there. All hell's breaking loose. I said, What do you mean all hell's breaking loose? Mike Adams has taken over the stage. And I'm sitting there going, shit. So we had like a 15-piece band, and they Mike Adams: Drunk. Yep. Glenn Ordway: were doing great stuff, great music. yeah, it was Mike Adams: Earth wind and fire and the temptations they Glenn Ordway: tremendous. Mikey is up there doing an OJ song. He has taken Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: over the microphone and he's dancing, doing his, his his uncoordinated dancing up on Mike Adams: Shit faced. Glenn Ordway: the shit face. And there's Raditz and Heinzen, you know, smiling on the dance floor with a big huge Mike Adams: Last it. Glenn Ordway: bun, laughing their ass off. And all I could do was laugh. And I just looked at my wife of just a couple of hours, and I'm sitting there going, is she gonna be pissed? Is Mike Adams: boy. Glenn Ordway: her family gonna be pissed? But she started laughing too because she knew. who Mikey was, but you had taken over the stage and that got everybody going to the next level. And from that point on, that party went into the wee hours of the morning, I rem Mike Adams: Well, they knew they couldn't get any any worse behavior than me when I'm drinking, you know. And I by the way, I haven't Glenn Ordway: my god. Mike Adams: had any alcohol big O since twenty sixteen, and I haven't had a cigarette since twenty sixteen. Glenn Ordway: You so you've been vaping though during the whole podcast, right? Mike Adams: Well and and and the weed. Glenn Ordway: Is is that weed that you're that you're you're vaping with? it is. Mike Adams: No, no, no, this is nicotine. I'm old school on the weed. I d I just do the raw No, I don't drink at all. I haven't had any Glenn Ordway: So you don't drink at all, Mikey. So it's just it's just weed now. A lot of people are doing that now. They're quitting alcohol. Mike Adams: Gummies and yeah, whatever you want. it's like to me, it keeps me centered on a good sleeping routine and I'm always hungry. Glenn Ordway: I'm I'm sure you're always hungry. But you don't gain Mike Adams: Yep. Glenn Ordway: you don't seem to gain much weight. Mike Adams: No, I'm one hundred eighty. I'm doing pretty good. By the way, you look like you've lost some weight. Glenn Ordway: I have. I've dropped fifty. Mike Adams: I remember at the my r roast you came out and did the roast that I did for charity. And Glenn Ordway: I did. That was fun. Mike Adams: and I this was right after you had gotten fired at EEI, which I was v visibly pissed about. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, but look at it this way. It added to the jokes that I could tell up there. 'Cause Mike Adams: That's right. Glenn Ordway: I could, rippy EI and and be part of it. And I actually a lot heavier. Jesus. Mike Adams: Well and you were heavier than you were heavier than I said. I I said I knew Glen I knew Glenn was gonna land on his feet and he's happy to know now that he actu that he has feet. Glenn Ordway: feet. I remember that line. And I remember taking a couple of shots at Bill Lee and he came right back at him with a with a couple of shots. And I do love Mike Adams: Yeah. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: the Savannah bananas, by the way. And that may be our only taste of baseball in twenty twenty seven, the way things are going right now. Mike Adams: Right. Well, Bill collapsed on the field when he was warming up for the Savannah Bananas and he ha Glenn Ordway: I know he did. Yeah. Mike Adams: he had a pacemaker put in. So he walked off the field, he was okay, but he he went and had a pacemaker put in. I saw him at a Bruins golf tournament. I But Bill, how's your pacemaker? He goes, it's fine, he goes, but my Prius won't start He's nuts. Glenn Ordway: I mentioned you did the sports world show. How many years did you do that show on NECN? Mike Adams: Six years. Six years, two Emmys. And and I you know, I I I the problem was the schedule. I was commuting from Connecticut every single day to Newton, Massachusetts, Glenn Ordway: my god. Mike Adams: eighty six miles each way. So it it eventually wore me down I and I quit. That's one of the jobs I didn't get fired from. I actually quit. Glenn Ordway: It was so such a different show for a local show. It was just different. It was almost like something you'd see in Second City or one of those, you know, weird shows that just interject all sorts of comedy and that's what you would do. I mean, it was and again, you never expected n knew what to expect next on that that show. It really was well done, like it really was. Mike Adams: No. It was completely ad libbed and we had such a good time doing it. The two biggest highlights of my life as far as having fun were that TV show and your radio show. Glenn Ordway: Well, I'm honored. I really am. I wanna bring in Billy Smith, who produces for you and your podcast and he's obviously Yeah, we can get a camera shot of him. Mike Adams: y you got a camera shot of him? Hold on. Go ahead, do that. I think I can. Hold on. I'm gonna go get a Snapple while you do that. the camera's not gonna work the camera's not gonna work. the camera doesn't work. No That's right, that's me. Yeah, I used to drink a lot of Snapple. Glenn Ordway: Go ahead, you get a snap, and I'll bring Billy in. What's it doesn't work? Okay. Well, you can hear Billy in the background. I I have I have been I I I've been privileged in in my career to work with three of the best production people in the in the game, in the country. And that was Jim Cutler, Pete Gustin, and this guy, Bill Smith. and you Mike Adams: Tremendous. Glenn Ordway: that's that's a lot of luck right there. You know, it really is. Mike Adams: that that's I I'm I'm Keep talking, Bill, I'm gonna get that Snapple. My face is red right there. It's this is amazing. And I and Pete Gustin the other day, he on his podcast, somebody sent it to me. He sat down and you know, every now and then in your career you meet someone who made a difference that helped get you going, helped you moving. And he gave me this tribute on the air that was I I I didn't know what to say. He was being totally genuine. He said all these wonderful things about how I encouraged him When he was just eighteen years old. But it was so obvious to see he had the talent. He had everything he needed. And and I just pushed him forward Glenn Ordway: He's got the Mike Adams: and Glenn Ordway: Billy, greatest set of pipes. I mean, his voice is to die for. Yes. He's the voice of Fox News right now. So Mike Adams: well he's the he's the voice of Fox. Yeah, you he's that great thing. Yeah. Glenn Ordway: think about this. This guy was working doing bits with us, And production work with us for the for the old big show. And this guy is now the voice of Fox. He's the voice of I don't know how many movie trailers he's won awards now. He's out in California, but they they do awards out in in Hollywood for voiceover trailers, the best ones of the year. He's won numerous of those awards. He's now it his website is unbelievable called The Blind Surfer. he's blind. People didn't realize that when he was working for us doing the big show. He had no sight. The blind surfer. He surfs now. Mike Adams: Legally blind. Yeah. The blind surfer. You know you know how you can tell a blind surfer at a nudist colony? It's Glenn Ordway: Afraid to ask. How? Mike Adams: not it's not hard. hold on. I'm sorry. You know the P I asked Pete. I remember That's it. That's it. It's it's soundtrack of my life. Working with Jim Cutler, Glenn Ordway: Jesus. Still have that cheesy little drum, you know, snare drum, huh? In the background, you still have it. Yeah. Mike Adams: all of a sudden one day Cutler came in and He said, Yeah, I'm so tired of this bullshit. if I was doing each the cause it was one of those Fridays where you had so many commercials to produce for the weekend. And he came in and he was totally wired. And he said, if I if I get paid for each one of these commercials, I could make a million bucks. So time went by and one day he came by, shook my hand, he said, I'm leaving. I said, you off to make your million bucks? He said, Yeah. And he did. He actually Glenn Ordway: he's making Jim Cutler's making a fortune. There's another game. He's been the voice of ESPN, the voice of NBC. He he does Mike Adams: A B C News, the whole thing. Glenn Ordway: he anywhere you go in the country, if you want to turn on local news in Indianapolis, you're gonna find Jim Cutler's voice. He's the voiceover. And he is making millions and millions. I can tell you that. Mike Adams: He's there. Yeah. Well I asked And the Fox News gig for for Yeah and I asked Pete Gustin must make a lot on the I asked Pete Gustin, Glenn Ordway: Does Mike Adams: I said, have you made I was joking, I said, Have you made a million bucks yet? He goes in that voice of his Yeah. Understood for him. I'm really proud of it. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, he's made it he's made a lot more than just one million. But I'm happy for those guys because they were a big part, as you were, Billy, of of you know, helping the show and getting the show going. And, you know, you need other people to be able to be part of that, for it all Mike Adams: big O, Glenn Ordway: to work. Mike Adams: I watch your podcast and I see the gl glasses you wear, and I went out and got a pair just like so I could be just like you. I wanted Glenn Ordway: Did you? Yeah, so Mike Adams: to bring up a show a show thing that happened too that a show that I was on with you was one of my favorite all time shows on the big show. It was me, you, Lenny Clark, and Fred Smerlis. Glenn Ordway: my god. Mike Adams: And Steve McMichael, the wrestler, comes in Gonz Mons Yeah, Glenn Ordway: who just passed away, right. Yeah. Mike Adams: ALS. Mongo. was his nickname. And he was a completely crazed individual. He's outside the gl he's Glenn Ordway: Steroided up. Yeah. Mike Adams: outside outside the glass. this is at the old Huntington Avenue. And he's waiting to come on. And he looks through the glass at us and we're he, you already promoted, he's coming on. And he goes, and he spits on the glass, a big goo gooey thing running down the glass. And I said, my God, this is gonna be great. So he comes in and he's, Lenny was Very quiet when he was in there. And you were asking all the questions and doing your professionalism thing. And Fred didn't say much either, but this guy was so crazy, no one wanted to get w crazy with him. So when he le when he leaves, you said to to Lenny, Lenny, you were really quiet during that that month. Glenn Ordway: No, it it it was no, it was before that. He threatened Lenny on the air. We Mike Adams: He did? Glenn Ordway: had to bleep him out. He he basically said, I don't like you. He because you're right. Lenny was sitting there quietly, which I've never Mike Adams: Quiet. Glenn Ordway: seen and I've spent a lot of time over the years with Lenny Clark. He was like a a little mouse. He was just sitting there saying nothing. And and yes, Mike Adams: But Lenny Yes, I know. Yes. So when he leaves, you asked him about that. And and he said Glenn Ordway: I did after that. But McMichael. S said so we we we go to the the the the break. It was a break. We were coming back for another segment. So Mike Adams: Okay. Glenn Ordway: we go to the break and I said to Lenny, I've never heard you so quiet in in your life. And Lenny says, Yeah. Mike Adams: And he said this. Glenn, I learned a long time ago, never flick a rhino in the balls. Glenn Ordway: Exactly. And so McMichael looks over at him and says, I don't know you and I don't like you. And you say one more thing, I'm gonna beat the shit out of you. And we're all looking at each other, and I look right at Fred, because that's my bodyguard. That's the guy, right? That's the guy. Mike Adams: That's the guy right there, Freddy. Glenn Ordway: I'm not getting in McMichael's way. Sorry, Lenny, I love you dearly, but I'm not sticking up for you. Right. So I look Mike Adams: No. Freddie, you're six you're six three two ninety. Yeah. Stand up. Glenn Ordway: at I look at Fred, and then Fred Just gets up slowly like this. And then McMichael Mike Adams: Yeah. Glenn Ordway: is staring at Lenny. And so Lenny's trying not to look at him in the eye. So Lenny's looking over to the left like this. Mike Adams: I know. Glenn Ordway: And McMichael's looking right at him, staring at him like, I want you right now. And I thought I was, Mike Adams: And and he was a nut. Glenn Ordway: I thought I was in like a WWE wrestling skit. That's what it sounded like. That's what it felt like in the studio. Finally, he goes right at Lenny again. What what the fuck do you do? Lenny said, Lenny said, I'm a comedian. I'm a comedian. And Mike Adams: Well shy comedian. Glenn Ordway: so finally Fred says, this is gonna get out of control. Cause McMichael gets up. Fredd swings around, gets between the two, and says, Steve, I love you, but don't, this is my guy. Don't mess. Don't mess. And Freddie saved Mike Adams: Nose tackles. Glenn Ordway: the day because Lenny admits to this day he that was probably the day he was going to die if it weren't for Fred Smerles. Mike Adams: I I know and but Lenny of all people, he's the greatest guy, nicest guy, and all that Glenn Ordway: Greatest guy in the world. Mike Adams: but McMichael was a crazed person. the other thing I wanted to bring up too, and I don't know you remember this, but I maybe the funniest the only funny line I ever had on your show. We're talking about we're talking about Glenn Ordway: Now you had a few. Yeah, you're it may be five or six. You're you're underselling yourself here, but go ahead. Mike Adams: Talking about ra this the lady wrestler, there was she was in the news about some some lady wrestler and I so I said before the break I said, and you always wanna knew when to go to the break after so I said Glenn Ordway: I didn't like going to the break, Mikey. That that's why podcasts work great. I don't like going to breaks. Because Mike Adams: I know. I know. Glenn Ordway: I I'm ready for the next thing and we have something really good and I'm sitting there going, We gotta take a break? But go ahead. Mike Adams: already. So I said, my I said my ex girlfriend my ex girlfriend was a lady wrestler. And you said, really? You know I said, Yeah, but you should I said you should see her box. Now no thing is that Glenn Ordway: I do remember that line. I do re that Jesus. Mike Adams: that's the borderline stuff. You you want to be on that line but not over it so you don't get fired. Right. You don't want to Glenn Ordway: You can't go over the line. Though there's stuff I I think that even T V shows back in the in the eighties and and nineties that you couldn't you couldn't do today. I mean, you know, Sanford and Sun, you couldn't air it today, you know, and it's it it right, you couldn't Mike Adams: Well, all in the family. forget it. Glenn Ordway: air it. You couldn't air this. I wanna ask you one more question because I know it was you talked about the greatest part of your career doing that T V show and doing the big show, which I really I'm honored that you feel that way. But Mike Adams: Very true. Glenn Ordway: I've had this conversation with you. So you were finally looking for a job and you thought you had a big job because the two chicks dishing, these two girls were getting a lot of attention on RKO, and they suddenly got a big job at WNEW F in New York. And you were going to be part of the show. You were going to be the comedy part of Mike Adams: Yes. Glenn Ordway: this two chicks dishing talk show. And Mike Adams: Right. Glenn Ordway: I know. It was a complete disaster. Mike Adams: It was. She told me, that was Leslie Gold, who there's no question about it. Well, she the Glenn Ordway: And and l the other girl was Laura. Mike Adams: other the other girl stayed in b in Boston. But Leslie Gold went down by herself to New York and and tried to convince me to be Yes. Glenn Ordway: is that what it was? Lori Kramer was the other girl. Yeah. Mike Adams: so Leslie Gold convinces me that she says, Well, so easy. All you gotta do is be the third person in the room and be funny w once every twenty minutes. I said, Okay. You know, eighty thousand dollars and I was out of a job and in full time. Glenn Ordway: Did you so you left Boston and went to New York? Mike Adams: I went to the Boston New York and it was Jason told me. Yeah, Glenn Ordway: So that was big move at the time. Mike Adams: Jason told me that it's too bad I got that job because he was thinking about me for doing what ended up being meters' job in the morning. But I I left, I went to New York, and she turned out to be the biggest bitch in the history of anything. She always was talking about how she wanted to be the female Howard Stern and all this stuff. I'm thinking, well, you don't have any chops. But I'm on the air with her, we're doing the thing, and she was nasty. Nasty nasty. And I was going through a divorce. I had substance issues at the time because I was very unhappy and I was living in New York and I hated it. It was bad stuff going on. So she I was late for a shift, like five minutes late for a morning for a 10 o'clock show. She had 10 o'clock. And I'm late, so they locked me out of the studio. Sounds like something I would do, except in. They locked me out of the studio. And I knew I hated the place anyway. So they were giving they were giving me shit on the air about being late all this strap. if you're on this show, if you better be puking on your shoes, if you're gonna be late, or you so I went up to the window. You know, this is NEW in New York. You want to make it to New York, but then again, you want to get out of there real fast. I I went Glenn Ordway: It a big time station though, N E W F Mike Adams: up to the window in the glass like this and I gave the finger to both of them. But Butch was her producer and her, and I walked out and never went back. Opie and Anthony were calling me, what you know on the air, what happened? I just got out of there because New York sucks. And if you're not re making big money, you're gonna hate New York. Secondly, I really couldn't stand her. I started calling her the radio bitch, and she really is and was. And and if I saw her to this day, she's probably one of the third person on my list of people I worked with that I don't like. You know the other two. Glenn Ordway: I do, you've already mentioned them. So how long did you last with that show? Mike Adams: about what did you say f six months? Something like that. And then I came out Glenn Ordway: Unbelievable. Mike Adams: I and I I stopped doing all the bad things I was doing and I you know, everything changed. I I was glad to get out of there, but I came right back to Boston because yeah. and that that's that's I'm I'm a Boston guy. I love that dirty water, man. I really do. Glenn Ordway: Listen, it this was great catching up with you. And we had Mike Adams: You too, pal. Glenn Ordway: so many great times over the years, both on the air, off the air and in different different places. I'm just glad I wasn't at the car wash with you that that night, Mike Adams: That's right. You would have known it. You would've remembered. But you know what? I gotta tell you this, your podcast is great. Glenn Ordway: Thank you. Mike Adams: You you're so good at what you do. You always have been, and this is perfect because you can do you have total freedom without commercial breaks. Glenn Ordway: Yeah, I'm having a blast. Now we'll have some commercials. Don't get me wrong. We'll have some because we have a lot of people that are already approaching us right now to do so. There you go, Bill. There you go. Rim Mike Adams: I'll be happy to do them for you, Glenn. Yeah, Smitty will voice them for you. Yeah, and then w then one day when we get a commercial, I'll make sure I let you know. Yeah, you Glenn Ordway: I've heard you at commercials. What I've been on y I've been on your podcast and you send me the the grandma's coffee cakes. What are you talking about? It's a sponsor. Mike Adams: Yeah. Yeah, the the platform puts a few on there, but the you're gonna do extremely well and you already are, it's like it's boom, bang, bing, and it's this is what I would have expected from the big O. Glenn Ordway: I'm having fun. Mikey, I really am having fun. The only thing that drives me crazy, you talked about the glasses. I have twenty twenty vision long distance. It's Mike Adams: Me too. Glenn Ordway: trying to read right now at my age that I need to put the glasses on and I hate them. Mike Adams: my god. Glenn Ordway: I I hate doing them. Yeah. I hate to it's like Ben Franklin, you know. Hey, you know, it's sucks. Aid Mike Adams: It's like, here's the menu. Glenn Ordway: the menu. and then you've got to put your light on your phone when you put on the menu, so you get it's the worst. It sucks getting old. Mike Adams: Right. It's tough getting you you're getting old, big old, when the when Glenn Ordway: Yeah. Mike Adams: the you go out to dinner and they make you pay up front. Glenn Ordway: Not a bad line, but no snare drum. Thank God. Mikey, Mike Adams: Didn't Glenn Ordway: it was a blast. Thank you so much, my friend. And continue Mike Adams: Thank you, Pep. Glenn Ordway: good success with you and your podcast. All right. Mike Adams: Th thanks very much, Big O. Glenn Ordway: You got it, buddy.
