- 1:15Visit the link in the description of this episode. Also, if you're done
- 1:19now on the YouTube channel. Exclusively on the YouTube channel, I have a
- 1:26new series called Tell of the Tapes. What I do is basically grab one
- 1:32of my cassette tapes from out of my garage because the ones behind me,
- 1:36that's not all of them. And I talk about them, talk about purchase
- 1:42when it dropped, my feelings back then and my feelings today and people chiming,
- 1:47you know, And I got a couple of joints, right, Like,
- 1:49there's a couple of albums on cassette that you expect to see on cassette,
- 1:55like, oh yeah, I had that, or we all had that,
- 1:57blah blah blah. But there's a few deep cuts, including singles,
- 2:02because remember back then MAXI singles, you know, you buy the single,
- 2:07you get the radio version, the clean version, the thirty version, the
- 2:10instrumental, the remix. A couple of those in there as well, So
- 2:15check it out. So far, I've done everybody from the main ingredient with
- 2:21p Rocket, Seal, Smooth Food, Snickings, Father MC right, illegal,
- 2:29y'all remember them kids cussin all of that, So definitely check that out.
- 2:35One of the episodes will probably be linked to this at the end of
- 2:38this episode. But yeah, it's a nice trip down memory lane and cassettes
- 2:44and stuff like that. And from when I heard some people collect them,
- 2:47I don't because I still have them. So there you have it big shout
- 2:53out to hip hopdx dot com, DJ Booth dot net, All hip Hop
- 2:58dot Com, and a couple of places where I get these stories from.
- 3:01Let's get right into the business. So if you don't know, and as
- 3:07you can see if you're watching a video, you can follow me on social
- 3:10media at Vegas World I N see right, that means Instagram, Twitter,
- 3:16all of that, right, But I follow hip Boy on Instagram. And
- 3:23what I like about following hip Boy is he's always teasing his work, right,
- 3:29because he's always working. It's kind of weird because you wonder, like,
- 3:32damn, he responds to everything, he teases all this stuff, when
- 3:36is he actually working on it? Well, obviously he's working on music all
- 3:38the time. He just dropped the joint with him and Alchemist that has been
- 3:43on repeat for me only like three tracks, I think. But I found
- 3:49it to be pretty dope. But he's like what people call a good follow
- 3:54right, You're always going to get information, You're always gonna get something interesting.
- 4:00He also will engage with you as well. Uh. But then I
- 4:04saw something that caught my eye because it was an audio sample and he and
- 4:10I you know, usually I don't turn the audio on right away because I
- 4:14don't know what it is. You know, you might be outside, you
- 4:15might be in church, you don't know where you are, and you know,
- 4:18people start cussing and stuff like that. But I saw he had an
- 4:21audio track, so I'm like, man, I know how hipoy get down?
- 4:26Man Like, he just released his album with Larussell and the week before
- 4:30that was with Alchemist. Week before that it was like Game and his pops
- 4:34big hits, like so you gotta you gotta catch up with him. H
- 4:41So I was like, I saw he posted like, oh, you know,
- 4:44Jay elect just hit me and said this will probably be the intro to
- 4:47his project. So I'm like, oh, so the Jay Electronica album that
- 4:53he said you know is probably coming soon is a reality and the feature west
- 5:00Side Gun. And I believe the last time I talked about this was probably
- 5:05sometime last year, where I think Jay Electronica is now on Griselda or he's
- 5:14just working with Westside Gun, not necessarily this song, but just as a
- 5:19project. So I was like, well, let me see what it sounds
- 5:24like, right, So I press play and you can do the same.
- 5:29And I gotta tell y'all for somebody who is quasi a Jay Electronica fan,
- 5:36maybe more of a fan back during the exhibit CE days than today. But
- 5:44I'm still curious about his music because even though he dropped an album, The
- 5:47Written Testimony with jay Z all over that joint, I still liked it.
- 5:53Right, And even though he finally dropped the follow up to his Style Wars
- 6:00released from what was at oh nine or whatever, it was entitled like Act
- 6:05two, it was okay, but it was like, too little, too
- 6:11late, right, we need something fresh. We need something fresh that you
- 6:15made now, new beats, new perspective, more music. So I'm you
- 6:23know, I was curious, and when I pressed blay, I didn't necessarily
- 6:28like what I heard. And it's not because I felt like it was the
- 6:30worst thing in the world. I just felt like the beat was like okay,
- 6:35and then West Side Gun starts rhyming, but I know what to expect
- 6:41this, so it's kind of like okay. Then Jay elect who I think
- 6:45sounds a little bit better on the beat than Westside Gun does, started rhyming.
- 6:50But even with his I was just like, oh, oh, okay,
- 6:55it's just okay. And I haven't heard the whole thing, but I've
- 6:59heard enough you're basically hearing two verses damn there, and it's just kind of
- 7:03like, I don't know where this is going. You know. J Electronica
- 7:11is difficult. It's difficult to nail down what your expectations should be for his
- 7:16project. For one, of course, it took like ten years for him
- 7:21to even drop a project, and then jay Z's all over that, and
- 7:26even though I liked it, it was a collaborative album. And then when
- 7:30he finally drops the project that he'd been holding onto forever that's actually his,
- 7:36it's heavy on the skits and interludes, and you just don't know where you're
- 7:43headed, right, Not that everything has to be linear and you know,
- 7:48guiding me through, but sometimes you kind of have to, right because you're
- 7:53just not You're not making it easy enough for people to consume your music and
- 7:59get all of your concepts. So when I hear something like this, it
- 8:03just sounds like a song, right, doesn't get me hyped, Like the
- 8:07Hip Boy and Alchemist project being teased got me more hyped than hearing Jay Electronica
- 8:15and Westside Gun on a hip boy beat. That it makes no sense I
- 8:18should be just as excited, but it was kind of underwhelming. Now,
- 8:22that doesn't mean the album's gonna be that. That doesn't mean that doesn't even
- 8:26mean the album's coming anytime soon. Because Stove God just dropped a single,
- 8:33so maybe Stove God got an album coming really soon. That was also underwhelming.
- 8:39So even though in twenty twenty four so far, there are a couple
- 8:46of projects I could point to and say this is dope. I think hus
- 8:50Kingpin has a very dope project with Knife Wonder. I think Shaye Noir has
- 8:56a very dope ep Alchemists and Hit Boy. That joint was on repeat.
- 9:01And then there's a few others right who dropped projects that I'm like, yo,
- 9:05I kind of dig this joint. But the ones I like anticipate,
- 9:11like I'm highly anticipating, I'm not even that hyped. I'm just I want
- 9:13to hear it. Like Benny the Butcher, I listen to it all the
- 9:18time because I'm a Bennie the Butcher fan. I'm not disappointed all the time,
- 9:22underwhelmed all the time. I wish it was a little bit better,
- 9:26but what's there? I like? So it's cool, But for the most
- 9:31part, the guys I like have been underwhelming. Now, one last thing
- 9:33since we talk in previews, right, we already talked about Jay elect preview
- 9:37and there's a new Stove Guide record out also teased, and this was teasing
- 9:43the Twitter post, probably Instagram also, but I saw it on Twitter.
- 9:50Freddy Gibbs and Mad Live with a new project. Now what I like most
- 9:56about that they're two for two, two for two as far as them two
- 10:03working together on the album, So third times to chum Freddy Gibbs. It's
- 10:07been a while since he dropped, so I'm I'm ready. I do not
- 10:13want that to also be underwhelming once we get there. I'm trying to temper
- 10:18my expectations. But now I'm kind of worried because I'm like, well,
- 10:22damn all the dudes who I would be hyped, like, yes, we
- 10:26got a project from him and him and him. You kind of listen,
- 10:30You're like, oh, this ain't this. Ain't it. It's not it?
- 10:33So we shall see. What do you think? Did you hear the
- 10:37Jay Electronica snippet? Did you hear the Stove God record? What are your
- 10:41thoughts? Leave your thoughts in a comment section if you're watching this on YouTube.
- 10:46I do read them and I do respond. So the twenty twenty four
- 10:52Grammy Awards took place not that long ago from the future. If you are
- 10:58from the future, get your punk ass out of here. But and that's
- 11:01because you already know what I'm what I'm what happened, okay, but we
- 11:05all know what happened, right, And I'm not gonna go in the years
- 11:09past, I would kind of go through the categories as it released to hip
- 11:15hop and say who won. But as y'all know, I just don't watch
- 11:18award shows. I don't. It's it's they're too long. And half the
- 11:26time it's really only like one or two really great, really great performances that
- 11:31don't require a bunch of lights and pyrotechnics and stuff like that and a million
- 11:37dances and stuff like that. I just really catch the results like the highlights.
- 11:43To me, it's a shorter and I'm like, oh he won,
- 11:46Oh she won, blah blah blah. We're just going to stick to one
- 11:50thing, and that is the album of the hip Hop album, Best hip
- 11:56Hop Album, right, that was the category of But it doesn't matter because
- 12:01in a hip hop category, Killer Mike won all three I think it was
- 12:09three categories, which is dope. If you've been watching this podcast, especially
- 12:16last year when it dropped, I did an episode talking about this is the
- 12:20top five album instantly. The name of the Killer Mike album is Michael by
- 12:24the way, if he interested in listening. When it dropped, I was
- 12:28like, oh, this is already one of the best of the year.
- 12:31By the end of the year, it was right at the top. This
- 12:33is hands down the best album of the year to me, and it beat
- 12:39out Drake and twenty one Savage rightfully, so that album is trash. I
- 12:43don't care what you say. Kids. There's one or two joints I like,
- 12:46I Ain't go front, but also beat album NAS and Hip Boy Kings
- 12:52Disease three, which I thought was the only other album deserving of the award.
- 13:01Also, who else would beat out metro Booman's album and someone else who
- 13:05I can't remember, because the only other album that was also in contention that
- 13:13maybe some people, some kids or whatever felt especially him though I should have
- 13:18won is Travis Scott's album. I think that's called Utopias. I forgive me.
- 13:24I don't care that much, but I did listen to it. I
- 13:26don't remember if I reviewed it here or gave my impressions I might have.
- 13:33But what I do remember from that album it was that it wasn't bad at
- 13:39all. I kind of liked it, especially musically, but it just wasn't
- 13:45better than Killer Mike's Michael album. And the difference it's not the music,
- 13:52because I felt like if you listen to the tracks or the beats on Killer
- 13:58Mike's album and attracts on you even look at King's Disease, but specifically on
- 14:07Travis Scott's album, production wise, quality and everything, concepts and instrumentation,
- 14:15whatever, everything, it's comfortable because it's really good. Now, it's not
- 14:22the same types of beats on both, but it's good. What separates them
- 14:28is lyric. Is the lyrics Killer Mike's album Michael has way more impact on
- 14:35a listener from a personal standpoint because it's his personal story. He has more
- 14:43to say than Travis Scott says. Now, that doesn't discount what Travis Scott
- 14:48had to say on his album that might have been personal. But unfortunately what
- 14:54some artists of today, they tend to say a lot of the same things
- 15:00all the time that have no real world implications. It just becomes redundant.
- 15:07Whereas Killer Mike it's introspective. He's conscious, and I'm not talking about a
- 15:13line or too. I'm talking about entire songs and concepts. Most rappers,
- 15:18including Travis Scott, can do those things within a song, but there's no
- 15:22consistency, there's no commitment to full songs and a full album telling the story.
- 15:35Everything comes together on Killer Mike's album To Tell a Story. Travis Scott
- 15:41has a lot of nice songs, but don't really add up to an entire
- 15:45story. Sure you can find ways to words, salad your way through a
- 15:50bunch of lingo to tie Utopia to the entire project. You can. I'm
- 15:56not saying he's completely like. I'm not saying the album versus the title just
- 16:03nothing connects. That's not true. It's just not better than Michael Now.
- 16:11He basically at the show. Travis Scott during his performance through somewhat of a
- 16:18tantrum right by talking about being by flipping one of the lyrics on his songs
- 16:25and say, you know, being snubbed ten times? Now. I watched
- 16:30I think it was Hip Hop DX. I watched the video where they kind
- 16:34of went over the ten times he was nominated, and unfortunately for him,
- 16:44I can only see one year where I was like, he was probably snubbed
- 16:48for that for sure. But what he has to realize is he's kind of
- 16:55like, I think it was Leonardo DiCaprio time or somebody, some major actor.
- 17:03I think it was Leal And this was previously. I think things have
- 17:06changed now, but where this actor had put in so many great performances,
- 17:12but they was always up against something comparable or better, so they were never
- 17:19going to be the clear winner. And that's kind of how I felt when
- 17:22I looked at like, like, when I look at this, I'm like,
- 17:25well, I don't feel like Utopia is better than Kingsley's East three.
- 17:27It's just not. And it comes down to the cohesiveness of the subject matter,
- 17:33right, it's the focus. I love a vibe too, but I
- 17:37can't buy for like twenty four tracks straight after a while, you know,
- 17:42the vibe, the vibe wears off and you let me go and pay this
- 17:45mortgage. Joe, this paid his rent. You know, I had my
- 17:49time. I bought my little bottle or something, you know, I smoked
- 17:52those something or I went and bought up Starbucks, you know, spend all
- 17:59my money in star Bucks. You know. But now it's time to get
- 18:00back down to reality. And I kind of feel like you cheaping it.
- 18:08I get his frustration and he can be frustrated, but you're kind of cheaping
- 18:12it when you're not looking at I mean, I'm right, he was gracious
- 18:18the other nine times. I get it. But you gotta keep pushing forward
- 18:25because at the end of the day, you'll probably get a Grammy for something
- 18:29that's not your best work. But he should have got a Grammy for sick
- 18:33Oh Mode that year, like Cardi B won the Album of the Year,
- 18:38so I think his album Astro World was up, but it was Cardi B
- 18:44Mania. You wasn't gonna get it, Jack, because there were some other
- 18:47people deserving on that list and you just wasn't gonna get it. But he
- 18:52should have got that at least, and maybe that went to Cardio, so
- 18:56I don't know. But nevertheless, I thought it was lacked a little class.
- 19:04But I get he wanted to make a statement with the snub. They
- 19:08tried to say that, you know, him slamming the chairs all around was
- 19:14also him being frustrated with being snubbed. But when I look at that video,
- 19:21I think the chairs smashing was always planned because what are you going to
- 19:27do, Like, you know, you see you lost and then you're like,
- 19:30y'all give me, y'all give me ten chairs out the back, like
- 19:33who does that? And all black? So it matches everything on the set.
- 19:36No, I think that was planned now, the way he was swinging
- 19:38them joints, it just so happens, like, oh yeah, I got
- 19:45a chairs slamming segment. I'm about to take some frustration down on these speakers
- 19:49in the floor and the stage at me. So I don't mind it as
- 19:56much because I don't really dislike that dude. I think I think he's pretty
- 20:00cool when you hear from him, and I get his frustration and he can
- 20:03be mad and he could talk ish and all that. But what I didn't
- 20:07like were the fans now just a sidebar. Also with the Grammy's jay Z
- 20:12said some stuff. He said some stuff that was true, he said some
- 20:15stuff that was said before, but speaking out saying, you know, Beyonce
- 20:23got snugged. I kind of agree, but I don't know, because I
- 20:30feel like that Renaissance album, if we could sidebar real Quick, was everywhere
- 20:36and it wasn't just black folk, Like I feel like that's all I heard
- 20:41Drake had dropped the album and Beyonce just covered that because she was like,
- 20:45I'm doing this and his anthems and there's a TikTok dance and white and black
- 20:51people everybody doing it. So that's why I felt like with Beyonce, definitely
- 20:55gonna win something for that album because my god, it dominated. But I'm
- 21:00not that familiar with Taylor Swift to know how dominating her music is. I
- 21:04mean, you see it, right, The NFL is more than happy to
- 21:08show that she's at games and stuff like that because they want a different audience
- 21:14to tune into their games. Well, it just all equals more money.
- 21:18So I can't say like Beyonce should have won versus Taylor Swift, but her
- 21:25husband obviously would think that, right, But that's besides the point. What
- 21:30I really didn't like. We're the fans, you people who just really every
- 21:41award show, it don't matter what it is, if it's sports, whatever
- 21:45it is. It's like you don't even appreciate the winner because you're so ready
- 21:51to talk about snubbing. Everybody ain't getting snubbed. You just didn't win.
- 21:59You just didn't win, right. A snub is when there's a consensus that
- 22:07this person had the best thing or best season or whatever, and they go
- 22:15for somebody who didn't even come close to it or were not better. Right,
- 22:22Lamar Jackson deserved to be NFL MVP. But what if they would have
- 22:26gave it to somebody else like Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes we know has super
- 22:34Bowls, but he didn't have a better season than Lamar Jackson. He just
- 22:37didn't. So if Lamar Jackson didn't get it, get the MVP and they
- 22:42gave it to Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson was snubbed. But just because you
- 22:48know an album you preferred, or like some weird people you know who don't
- 22:55who don't know who Killer Mic is, which is crazy because Run the Jewles
- 23:00probably has a younger fan base than people liking Killer Mike from back in the
- 23:04days or from the underground side of it and saying, y'all don't know who,
- 23:11y'all don't know Run of Jewels. This is your first time seeing this
- 23:12dude. This dude's already been high profile before the solo album. But it's
- 23:22not about that. They don't care. All they know is Metro Booming didn't
- 23:26win and Travis Scott didn't win, and that's what they liked, and that's
- 23:30what they loved, and they never took the time to even listen to They
- 23:34might've listened to NAS, but they never took the time to even acknowledge Killer
- 23:41Mike's solo album Michael, when if you're paying attention to hip hop. Just
- 23:48in December, Mad List had Killer Mike's Michael at the top damn then of
- 23:57their Best of twenty twenty. The writing was on the wall. So again,
- 24:03the only album, in my opinion, that was nominated there that could
- 24:10have won or should have won, it's Kings Disease three. But I'm not
- 24:15saying NAS got snubbed because I think Michael is just an overall better album,
- 24:22just is now. Kings Disease three is definitely the best of the Nons and
- 24:27hit Boy projects, But I don't think it was better than Michael, you
- 24:33know. I just think Michael just had just way too much, just too
- 24:40much substance, substance, and it was It's kind of like, I know,
- 24:45some of y'all just buy sheets and the sheets, but you know they
- 24:48are thread council sheets, right, and you feel them, you know,
- 24:51when you have them on your bed. You know, you go to the
- 24:52dollar store and you buy some sheet, You're like, damn, do I
- 24:55even have sheets on the wind cutting through? Right? But and then you
- 25:00go buy some more expensive sheets that have a higher thread count, and you're
- 25:04like, man, these sheets feel good. You know, I'm protected from
- 25:07the elements around me. It's comfortable. I'm going to bad then that's my
- 25:14analogy for that. But that's the difference, right, It's just more depth
- 25:21within Killer Mike's Michael than his counterparts. But the majority of those albums up
- 25:27there were good albums. It's just that it can only be one winner,
- 25:33and just because you didn't win doesn't mean you were snubbed. But I do
- 25:37get Travis Scott's frustration because if there's like ten times of you hoping to get
- 25:44one, you're gonna lose it. So I'm not too mad. I just
- 25:48think it could have been handled in a different way. What do you think
- 25:52did you watch the Grammys? What do you think about this whole snubbing?
- 25:57Did you think Killer Mike deserved to win? Did you think he deserved to
- 26:03sweep? And we know he was in handcuffs not too long after that,
- 26:07But that's not what we do here, we talk music and lastly, so
- 26:18let me you know, sometimes some things you just got to take your time
- 26:21with if you don't know. Recently, hip hop celebrated the fiftieth birthday or
- 26:32what would have been the fiftieth year of his life, Jade Diller. If
- 26:40you don't know who Jay Diller is, he is one of the greatest hip
- 26:45hop producers of all time and not really known for a bunch of hits,
- 26:52even though he's done it, but it probably plays more into the technique and
- 26:59his past for hip hop. He died a few years back, and ever
- 27:07since then there's been Dylla Day and Happy Birthday and books and mixes and number
- 27:12of artists using his music to rap over after he passed. It's just been
- 27:21dope to see him get celebrated like that because he wasn't as celebrated as much
- 27:26as he should have been within hip hop, and you know, obviously people
- 27:32like Buster Rhymes chimed in and he said, happy fifty to the greatest to
- 27:37ever do it, my favorite producer ever and one of my favorite MC's ever
- 27:44ever. I will forever represent you through my work. King comment also chimed
- 27:49in, there isn't a day that goes by that my life isn't moved in
- 27:55touch by what you brought to it. Thank you, my great brother,
- 27:59for blessing me and the talent with your gifts and your artistry and your genius.
- 28:06You are the greatest. We celebrate your born day on the planet.
- 28:10Happy Birthday, Jay Diller. And it kind of goes on and on.
- 28:15Pete Roth, you know, chimed in Happy Born daid to the goat his
- 28:22physical is missed, but his greatness is still here with us. That's high
- 28:26praise. And DJ Jazzy Jeff also called greatest of all time and a genius
- 28:34in one of his messages. These are legends already in the game paying homage
- 28:42to J. Diller and what he's done. If you don't know, there
- 28:48was a book that came out maybe two years ago called Diller Time that ironically
- 28:56I'm still reading, but I do have a review coming up pretty soon that
- 29:03kind of broke down the method to Diyla's madness, which is his production and
- 29:11his influences and Detroit in general. And just to talk real quick on that
- 29:17book and why you know these legends in the hip hop game feel this way
- 29:22about him and hip hop has in general. This man essentially created another way
- 29:33to hear rhythm through the beats he produced. I'll say, like I've always
- 29:38said, I remember back when I heard some of his beats, mostly like
- 29:44with Slum Village, and I used to feel like it was offbeat, Like
- 29:48what something about this beat is like off? Like like it's not in the
- 29:53pocket. And later on, I, you know, I grew to new
- 29:59this that he was basically changing how you hear music, you know, how
- 30:07you were used to hearing music. And I'm not really gonna get into it,
- 30:08but it's definitely in that daya time book where it's broken down the beat
- 30:17like it was all it was. It's off. But if you understand in
- 30:23the way in which he sampled and created some of these beats that sound off,
- 30:29and you listen to it within the rhythm pattern that he designed with this
- 30:34beat, then you can hear it. Then it's not off. And that's
- 30:42magic, right, because when you take people who are used to hearing rhythm
- 30:48in a certain way, and anything that's not that way is offbeat and not
- 30:53good to most people. But you can tweak the way of listening and then
- 31:00how they approach the music to create a new rhythm. Well, you're a
- 31:04genius. There's a lot of people who produce and make great music and are
- 31:11called geniuses, but this is a real genius. Anytime you can change the
- 31:17way people hear music and you're not like a bona fide I'm not saying he's
- 31:22not, but you're not known as a musician, and musicians emulate you as
- 31:27a result. You're a genius and that's what Jay Diller is man. So
- 31:34obviously you can do the knowledge and learn about him and learn about the music
- 31:38he did produce that you do know. There's so many people who are wrapped
- 31:44up with Diller beats, from common to buster rhoms to nas try call quest
- 31:48to Ray Kwan like the Wu it's crazy and the man was a chameleon with
- 31:56the beat making. He can make a beat that you like. Cut definitely
- 32:00made that. No Dyla made that. He can make another beat. Rizza
- 32:04definitely made that one. No Dila did that. It's just that he's not
- 32:09necessarily a household name. It's like those who know know. But at some
- 32:16point, if you call yourself a hip hop head and you like any of
- 32:20the people from Pete Rock to bust A drums, anybody I named, and
- 32:23you see them kind of paying amise to this dude and calling him like the
- 32:30goat and genius and all that. It's not because he just passed away.
- 32:32It's because the man was special. So happy birthday to Jay Dillar. Go
- 32:38out and listen to some Dylan music today. That's gonna do it for me.
