- 0:00Speaker 1: The Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, we get together with
- 0:03Speaker 1: Dan Hurley to catch up on the Huskies and what's
- 0:06Speaker 1: going on here as we get into the middle of December.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Mike Crispino with it and the coach back from Madison
- 0:13Speaker 1: Square Garden after an exhilarating win over Gonzaga on the weekend. Strange,
- 0:19Speaker 1: it was a late start. They had hockey during the day.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It's always different. When they got to change the floor.
- 0:24Speaker 1: It kind of delays everything that didn't seem to bother.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Yukon noted with a start that your team got off
- 0:30Speaker 1: to was just what the doctor ordered. I thought, I
- 0:33Speaker 1: mean thirteen to two. They had to call a time
- 0:35Speaker 1: out to stop the bleeding.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think. You know, you're so excited for us
- 0:41Speaker 2: to get the opportunity to play such a such a
- 0:45Speaker 2: big game, such a such a high quality opponent. You know,
- 0:49Speaker 2: at MSG, we weren't really thinking about, you know, it
- 0:53Speaker 2: being a late start. It was. It was eight o'clock
- 0:55Speaker 2: as a post seven. You know, they didn't you know,
- 0:58Speaker 2: they didn't tip it off at midnight. So we fell
- 1:00Speaker 2: just so so excited to be back at a place
- 1:03Speaker 2: that got great vibes in We knew, uh, we'd have
- 1:08Speaker 2: a great crowd and electric crowd. I think you know
- 1:12Speaker 2: that the team is certainly uh, you know, playing with
- 1:16Speaker 2: more confidence going in and and you know we're able
- 1:20Speaker 2: to uh to get into the city and have dinner
- 1:24Speaker 2: at at our favorite restaurant. Uh. So the boys were
- 1:28Speaker 2: well fed, and you know, we were able to really
- 1:31Speaker 2: focus on, you know, playing well enough defensively, rebounding the
- 1:37Speaker 2: ball well enough, and you know, executing enough offensively making
- 1:43Speaker 2: enough shots for us to be able to get what
- 1:46Speaker 2: was we knew would be a big win for us
- 1:49Speaker 2: to uh, you know, to try to get back some
- 1:52Speaker 2: of what we lost earlier in the non conference.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, the three losses in Maui followed now by four wins,
- 2:00Speaker 1: three against really good opponents here in a row. When
- 2:04Speaker 1: you get off to a start like that, no matter
- 2:06Speaker 1: what building you're playing in, and the team did the
- 2:08Speaker 1: same thing at Texas, it really puts the opponent on
- 2:11Speaker 1: their heels somewhat so, but you can't really calculate it.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Can you coach a good start? I wonder sometimes because
- 2:19Speaker 1: Yukon's gotten off to two really good starts against these
- 2:22Speaker 1: last two teams.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I think, you know, sometimes I think it's you know,
- 2:26Speaker 2: what you see maybe in terms of a first play.
- 2:32Speaker 2: You know, and obviously there's some teams that look susceptible
- 2:37Speaker 2: where maybe you go for you know, you go for
- 2:40Speaker 2: a lob, or you you do something to get an
- 2:42Speaker 2: open three, or you get something for a backcut layup,
- 2:46Speaker 2: something that if it goes bad and the past sales
- 2:49Speaker 2: out of bounds, you know, on the lob pass to Samson,
- 2:53Speaker 2: maybe it goes the other way and the moaning starts
- 2:57Speaker 2: and the players maybe, you know, it's an ominous beginning.
- 3:03Speaker 2: But with the way Samson started the game for us offensively,
- 3:09Speaker 2: you know, the lob dunk, the crazy left handed dunk,
- 3:14Speaker 2: how he was flying around the court in a lot
- 3:16Speaker 2: of ways. You know, Samson has become kind of the
- 3:20Speaker 2: spirit of the team, the heart and soul. He's a
- 3:24Speaker 2: lot of times he's our biggest warrior out there in
- 3:27Speaker 2: terms of just how much he gives. So I think
- 3:31Speaker 2: our start had a lot to do with Samson. Johnson
- 3:34Speaker 2: and he's very unsung in terms of how he's thought
- 3:39Speaker 2: of in the program and how much he does for
- 3:41Speaker 2: the team.
- 3:42Speaker 1: You know, it does seem like when he makes play
- 3:44Speaker 1: as they are spectacular. The crowd goes crazy. He's shooting
- 3:48Speaker 1: over eighty percent, which is astounding to me. He's doing
- 3:53Speaker 1: so many things well. But then he got banged up,
- 3:55Speaker 1: he got hurt, he was on the floor. Scary moment there.
- 3:58Speaker 1: I know you were out there. Obviously we didn't know
- 4:00Speaker 1: what happened to him, couldn't really tell on the play replay,
- 4:04Speaker 1: Can you can you give us a little bit on
- 4:06Speaker 1: what what happened to him? And I know he was
- 4:08Speaker 1: back on the bench. That was a good sign. And
- 4:10Speaker 1: he you know, we were told, I think you even
- 4:12Speaker 1: mentioned it, he wanted to come back in the game,
- 4:14Speaker 1: but the staff, the medical staff said no, no, no, uh,
- 4:18Speaker 1: just tell us what what you guys went through there,
- 4:20Speaker 1: because when you see a guy like him, who means
- 4:22Speaker 1: so much to the team, go down like that in
- 4:26Speaker 1: the midst of such a big game, it shakes you
- 4:28Speaker 1: up a little bit.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he uh you know, he's in concussion protocol. He
- 4:31Speaker 2: obviously got hitting the you know, hitting the face. You
- 4:34Speaker 2: could you know see that in the replays and and
- 4:37Speaker 2: uh yeah, but he's feeling much better, and so he's
- 4:41Speaker 2: in that is he's in that protocol. And uh, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 2: Samson's just the type of guy who uh, I mean
- 4:47Speaker 2: he plays through anything. I mean he he played uh,
- 4:51Speaker 2: I mean he he he can endure any pain, uh,
- 4:56Speaker 2: in any level of suffering. He's uh, he's an incredibable
- 5:00Speaker 2: athlete that way, he's an incredible warrior and incredible competitor
- 5:04Speaker 2: and uh, you know, he's become the uh I think
- 5:09Speaker 2: just with the way he plays, he's become, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 2: the the kind of the heart and soul of the
- 5:14Speaker 2: team because he's uh, he's so beloved by all of us,
- 5:18Speaker 2: and he plays so hard and he does and he's uh,
- 5:23Speaker 2: he's become a leader. He's become more vocal, and he's
- 5:27Speaker 2: so productive and as he's uh as when he uh,
- 5:31Speaker 2: when he stays out of foul trouble. You know, he's
- 5:34Speaker 2: just an incredible impact player.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So when you say he's in concussion protocol, does that
- 5:39Speaker 1: mean he's definitely gonna have to sit out a little
- 5:41Speaker 1: bit here before he gets back to one hundred percent?
- 5:43Speaker 1: How does that work?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Actually, yeah, I don't know either. I just know that
- 5:49Speaker 2: day by day, those guys do a little bit more
- 5:51Speaker 2: until we until we uh, until he's cleared.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Uh. So that brings us to the centers, which you know,
- 6:00Speaker 1: most teams don't go three deep. You've had to go
- 6:02Speaker 1: three deep here a couple of times in a row.
- 6:05Speaker 1: First of all, Terris Reed Junior, another guy in the
- 6:08Speaker 1: middle who's shooting over seventy percent when he gets the
- 6:11Speaker 1: ball down low. He is a powerful man. He's a
- 6:13Speaker 1: tough guy to stop. That must be a real give
- 6:17Speaker 1: you a sense of comfort almost from the coaching perspective,
- 6:21Speaker 1: when you know he has the ball down low for
- 6:22Speaker 1: the most part, he converts.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, you know he's uh, you know, he's physically
- 6:27Speaker 2: very talented obviously, and he moves great. Uh, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 2: and I think there were some things too where uh,
- 6:34Speaker 2: there was a better game out there for Taris versus Gonzaga,
- 6:37Speaker 2: and he's gonna have to be a lot better than
- 6:39Speaker 2: he was versus Gonzaga in the Xavier games. Uh, in
- 6:43Speaker 2: the Xavier game and moving forward in a brutally physical
- 6:47Speaker 2: Big East. I think you know, there's uh, there's opportunities
- 6:51Speaker 2: for him to be much more dominant as a rebounder,
- 6:55Speaker 2: much more dominant as an interior scorer, and uh and
- 6:59Speaker 2: he bigger chances for him to create great offense for
- 7:03Speaker 2: us by you know, screening, you know, being as good
- 7:06Speaker 2: a screener as Samson is for us in the ball
- 7:08Speaker 2: screen game and in the opportunities to get our shooter shots.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So you know, taris right now with Samson, you know
- 7:17Speaker 2: likely uh you know to miss sometime. Uh. You know, here,
- 7:21Speaker 2: there's gonna be uh, there's a lot greater pressure on you. Uh.
- 7:25Speaker 2: You know when you go from you know, the guy
- 7:27Speaker 2: off the bench, it's almost like the backup quarterback is
- 7:30Speaker 2: the most popular guy in town. Uh uh. And I
- 7:35Speaker 2: think right now, you know, he's gonna have to raise
- 7:39Speaker 2: his level, you know, if he's gonna you know, be
- 7:42Speaker 2: a starter for us with Samson potentially missing time because
- 7:47Speaker 2: Samson just he plays with incredible urgency and desperation, and
- 7:52Speaker 2: especially with the starting group, that's what you really need
- 7:55Speaker 2: out there. And and we were happy with the minutes
- 7:58Speaker 2: that Yousef gave us. You know, got in there and
- 8:01Speaker 2: you kind of muddied the water a little bit and uh,
- 8:04Speaker 2: you know, kind of got under their skin a little
- 8:06Speaker 2: bit by being physical, and you know, did some things
- 8:10Speaker 2: defensively to protect the rim. Uh. And then you know,
- 8:14Speaker 2: he got a couple offensive rebounds and got us a couple
- 8:17Speaker 2: of extra good looks at three that we didn't that
- 8:19Speaker 2: we didn't connect on. Obviously, it was not a great
- 8:22Speaker 2: a great shooting night for us, so you kind of
- 8:24Speaker 2: walk away from the game. Obviously you're amazed at the
- 8:27Speaker 2: way Liam showed up, but we also too, We were like, uh,
- 8:33Speaker 2: you know, we were We felt really good about winning
- 8:35Speaker 2: a game we needed, especially on a night where where
- 8:38Speaker 2: Alex had a tough shooting night and solo uh two
- 8:43Speaker 2: of our three made guys on the perimeter uh did
- 8:46Speaker 2: not get to uh anywhere near their average, And to
- 8:49Speaker 2: still win versus a team like that, we we we'll
- 8:51Speaker 2: take it.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah, no, no doubt finding a way. That's what the
- 8:54Speaker 1: Huskies did, certainly on Saturday night. More on Liam McNeely
- 8:58Speaker 1: and USU Cingari and sophomore group for the Huskies see
- 9:02Speaker 1: young team in some ways. We'll be back with more.
